Draft 2011 – 1st Round Discussion Thread

Posted: April 28th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 419 Comments »

No updates as far as the Eagles go.  The players are now on the stage.  Ryan Kerrigan is still dreamy.

Will we pick tonight?  Good question.  I’d love to promise yes, but we could very well be moving back.  Let’s hope all the scuttlebutt is true and a bunch of QBs go early.

    Goodell being booed. Classic.

  2. 2 Aaron said at 7:38 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Awesome response to Goodell.

  3. 3 dukebowden said at 7:40 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Goodell’s strategy? Silence the crowd with a literal “moment of silence.”

  4. 4 Boyboy said at 7:41 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Even with the uncertainty surrounding the season, the draft still makes me tingle. KFC and vodka ready to go.

  5. 5 dukebowden said at 7:41 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Hey Tommy. Do I have to type in an email every time I post or am I doing something wrong?

  6. 6 Tommy Lawlor said at 7:42 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @ dukebowden.l.

His only other choice was to have Abe Vigoda walk out nude and shock the crowd into silence. Permanent silence.

  7. 7 Tommy Lawlor said at 7:43 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @ duke…

You should be able to sign in and stay in. I think. I’m in permanently because I write the actual posts. See if there isn’t a sign in option.

  8. 8 dukebowden said at 7:45 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Excellent idea, Tommy. But I wouldn’t waste naked Abe on the crowd. If anyone needs to be permanently silenced, it’s Jamie Dukes.

  9. 9 Boyboy said at 7:45 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I don’t see a sign in…but I have auto complete turned on in my browser so it fills in when i start typing it. Other option. Copy, then paste it in each time.

  10. 10 Tommy Lawlor said at 7:49 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Jamie Dukes is less than awesome. And average. And mediocre. But he makes up for that by talking a lot and loudly.

  11. 11 dukebowden said at 7:52 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I could also live without ever seeing Deion interview anybody. I find his game commentary surprisingly interesting at times but can’t stand how he strokes his subjects in interviews.

Man, I’m unexpectedly hostile today toward FSU TV guys.

  12. 12 Boyboy said at 7:52 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I wish I could listen to Dukes…I’m in a hotel and am stuck with ESPN coverage.

  13. 13 bsencore said at 7:53 PM on April 28th, 2011:

If anyone wants to talk about the draft on Twitter too, the intelligent Eagles conversation is happening at #draftfilter

  14. 14 Davesbeard said at 7:54 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Man that chat with Cam Newton summed up why people dislike him for me. It certainly made me dislike him! Though I imagine a young Mike Vick was not too dissimilar..

Name a QB in the last 10 years who had an attitude anything like his..

    Tom Brady, nope
    Eli Manning, nope
    Peyton Mannig, nope
    Drew Brees, nope
    Aaron Rodgers, nope
    Ben Roethlisberger, nope (pretty much)
    Kurt Warner, nope

  15. 15 dukebowden said at 7:55 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Dukes fortunately doesn’t seem to be a part of tonight’s broadcast. But I’ve been suffering through him on Path to the Draft for the last week.

  16. 16 mcare89 said at 7:57 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Let’s do this, gentlemen.

  17. 17 Boyboy said at 7:58 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Any chance of using Kolb to trade UP? I apologize if this was talked about before, Tommy. With the CBA situation, this may be a way to move him and still get value this year.

  18. 18 ATG said at 8:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Tommy,

A sign-in feature would be nice, but I haven’t found one either. If you are not busy tonight, maybe you want to work on that.

  19. 19 Boyboy said at 8:02 PM on April 28th, 2011:

nevermind…didn’t realize that there can’t be any trades tonight. just saw that.

  20. 20 mattwill said at 8:03 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Glad to be here. Thanks Tommy.

  21. 21 Philanova said at 8:03 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Cam Newton it is.

  22. 22 Davesbeard said at 8:03 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Newton doesn’t even look bothered

  23. 23 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:04 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Deion + Cam = 9th level of hell.

  24. 24 mcare89 said at 8:06 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Like ESPN shoring up their coverage with just Berman, Kiper, and Gruden on set.

  25. 25 mcud said at 8:06 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Its almost become irrational for me that I dislike Cam Newton this much. Not only do I believe he will be a bust, I am actually hoping for it. Don’t know if I have ever felt that way.

  26. 26 Boyboy said at 8:07 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Let’s see if he’s better than the last great Auburn QB, Jason “deer in headlights” Campbell.

  27. 27 EdinburghEeagle said at 8:08 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    “we want football”

Indeed. Good job radio city crowd

  28. 28 ATG said at 8:09 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Well, I’m glad to see we won’t be drafting him as our patented surprise pick.

  29. 29 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:09 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I don’t dislike Cam, but the more he talks the more I start to dislike him. Him and Deion was torturous. Awful interview.

  30. 30 ATG said at 8:09 PM on April 28th, 2011:

“Time to get to work now.”

Oh, if only that were true…

  31. 31 Dr. Ogrodnick said at 8:11 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Goodell is going to be booed all night long. Pure delicious awesome sauce.

  32. 32 mcud said at 8:11 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I realize that the Gruden Camp show is supposedly a puff piece (and is, to a large degree), but that segment cemented my dislike for him as a franchise QB. To me, he’s a 4th round guy.

  33. 33 Davesbeard said at 8:13 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Now that is how to react to being drafted into the NFL. I like Von Miller.

  34. 34 mcud said at 8:13 PM on April 28th, 2011:

If Dumerville comes back healthy, having both him and Von Miller coming after you would be scary.

  35. 35 mcud said at 8:14 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Hopefully Miller will be a better LB than the last A&M linebacker who went #2 overall (one of my favorite prospects ever). I’m dating myself here.

  36. 36 dukebowden said at 8:14 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Latest evidence of how much the NFL is becoming a passing league — 4-3 team takes 240-pound pass rusher No. 2 in the draft.

  37. 37 Philanova said at 8:15 PM on April 28th, 2011:

It’ll be interesting to see how he fares in the 4-3.

  38. 38 ATG said at 8:15 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Davesbeard: I was just about to share that same thought before I thought to refresh first.

  39. 39 Davesbeard said at 8:16 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I don’t see why he isn’t a great fit for the 4-3. He was defensive MVP in the senior bowl playing the 4-3 with no blitzing..

  40. 40 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:16 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Not sure I think Miller is the best choice for Denver, I think he fits best in a 3-4, but John Fox has had some good defenses over the years so if anybody can make it work he can I guess.

  41. 41 Boyboy said at 8:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Miller is a classy guy. That’s good to see. Think he’s related to Von Hayes?

  42. 42 Kammich said at 8:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I love Von Miller. He’s #2 on my board, which means Denver got their value back. But I’m just not sure that I can justify drafting a 4-3 SAM linebacker at #2 overall.

Aaron Curry was supposed to be one of the “cleanest” linebacker prospects in his draft, and went #4 overall to Seattle. He hasn’t delivered the impact that was expected. I’m not sure there’s ANY way for Miller to live up to the expectations of being picked 2nd.

Really like the kid, though. Showed at the Senior Bowl that he can be a legit, Pro Bowl caliber SAM ‘backer. Just not sure you take one of those at #2.

  43. 43 ATG said at 8:18 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Miller had a better shuttle than Peterson and a better 40 than Green?! Wow.

  44. 44 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:18 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Kammich, well said. My feelings exactly.

  45. 45 mcare89 said at 8:20 PM on April 28th, 2011:

OK, top 3 off the board, now it gets interesting. What do you do, Cleveland?

  46. 46 Kammich said at 8:21 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Buffalo has to be happy. A guy who fits prototypically as a 5-technique in the base 3-4 and then can ably slide inside when they run the nickel and dime D’s. Great pick for Buf.

  47. 47 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:21 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Miller to DEN isn’t ideal, but that team does need playmakers. Robert Ayers doesn’t know what a QB looks like.

  48. 48 Cliff said at 8:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

The more other people dislike Cam Newton, the more I want him to succeed.

  49. 49 mcud said at 8:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

In any other year, we’d be hearing how the Eagles are trading up right now in a Kevin Kolb package.

  50. 50 mattwill said at 8:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Where the Cards go at 5 will say a lot about our Kolb situation. If they don’t go QB then this year’s #@ and next year’s #1 have to be in play.

  51. 51 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

It sounds like the Browns are trading down with Atlanta moving all the way up to #7. If that happens, I am really curious to see the price Atlanta pays.

  52. 52 Philanova said at 8:24 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Dareus is like Boomhauer. Couldn’t understand a daggum thing he said.

  53. 53 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:25 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Let’s hope ARZ goes for Peterson. That leaves them available as a KK trade partner.

  54. 54 Boyboy said at 8:25 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Who’s gonna throw it to him? Poor Bengals.

  55. 55 ATG said at 8:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

“He could be in a circus the way he handles a football.”

…And now he is. Welcome to the Bengals.

  56. 56 mcud said at 8:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @boyboy

Trade them Vick. Keep Kolb. 🙂

  57. 57 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:27 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Tommy, sounds like we have to hope that teams like Arizona skip QB in the 1st, and then the run on QB’s makes none availalbe to them in the 2nd either.

The more QB needy teams that happens to, the better the odds one of them ends up with Kevin Kolb.

  58. 58 mcud said at 8:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Move up for Peterson. Just do it Andy. You know you want to…

  59. 59 mcare89 said at 8:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Are we putting any credence into the Marc Bulger rumors?

  60. 60 Nathan said at 8:30 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Peterson to the Cards. Good for the Eagles.

  61. 61 Davesbeard said at 8:30 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Trade Kolb for Peterson on Monday please!

  62. 62 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:31 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Good. The Kolb sweepstakes are alive and well.

  63. 63 Kammich said at 8:31 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Cannot fault Arizona for taking Peterson. There are definitely bigger needs to fill, but Peterson is the #1 player on my board. I think they’ll look back 3 years from now and be very, very happy that they went with Peterson over someone like Blaine Gabbert.

The Texans are a bunch of sad pandas now, though.

  64. 64 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:31 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    RE: Bulger

He might have an agreement with ARZ. Question is whether it is to start or be backup.

ARZ should be a key trade partner when the league year starts.

  65. 65 mcare89 said at 8:33 PM on April 28th, 2011:

And here comes Atlanta from the dark recesses of #27. This trade should be insane.

  66. 66 mcud said at 8:33 PM on April 28th, 2011:

My God, how much did Atlanta give up?

  67. 67 Boyboy said at 8:33 PM on April 28th, 2011:

If there is one thing I’m sure about tonight; these KFC hot wings are delicious.

  68. 68 Kammich said at 8:33 PM on April 28th, 2011:

WOW. Atlanta pulls the trigger, pulls a Ditka and trades their entire draft for Julio Jones? Looks like we have our first “holy fuck” moment of what should be a verrrry interesting first round.

  69. 69 TEW! said at 8:34 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Holy crap that is a lot to give up for a WR.

  70. 70 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:34 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I can’t believe Arizona would go into 2011 counting on Mark Bulger to make it thru a season as their starting QB. He would be a great addition as a backup, but the NFC West is still within reach…but only if they get a QB they can count on.

  71. 71 Philanova said at 8:35 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Did I hear correctly? 1st, 3rd, and 4th this year + 1st and 3rd or 4th next year?!

  72. 72 mcud said at 8:36 PM on April 28th, 2011:

All that for a guy who wasn’t even the best guy at his position in the draft. AJ Green is simply better.

  73. 73 mcud said at 8:36 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Holmgren? This has Heckert’s fingerprints all over it…

  74. 74 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:36 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Kudos to Holmgren / Heckert for pulling off that deal.

  75. 75 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:37 PM on April 28th, 2011:

We need Gabbert to go to SF.

  76. 76 Boyboy said at 8:37 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    damn, he’s ugly
    ridiculous trade, btw

  77. 77 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:38 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Great trade for Heckert and Holmgren. They had a ton of holes to fill with their move from the 4-3 to the 3-4 and back to the 4-3. They need multiple D-Lineman, Secondary, and skill players. They need alot. This trade gives them a chance to do it this decade.

  78. 78 mcare89 said at 8:38 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    1st, 2nd, 4th, next years 1st and 4th.

That’s absurd. I like Julio Jones, but that’s insane.

  79. 79 Eric said at 8:38 PM on April 28th, 2011:

2 1st rounders for Cleveland next year? Well, done, Tom. Too bad he always had a winner in Philly and could never trade out of the top 10.

Like most of you, I’m still 6 for 6 in my picks.

  80. 80 Cliff said at 8:38 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Great move by Cleveland!

  81. 81 ian no 2 said at 8:39 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Heckert pulled off probably the best trade in this era. The Falcons are insane. Heckert is building the Browns well.

  82. 82 MannaFromKevin said at 8:39 PM on April 28th, 2011:

lol @ bowtie. Nice, Julio. Btw Atlanta broke the freaking bank for him. Youch.

  83. 83 Kevin said at 8:40 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Kudos to Heckert. Hopefully Roseman has similar magic in him.

    Terrible trade by Cleveland

  84. 84 TEW! said at 8:40 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I can’t believe a team would give that much up for a WR… Truly stupid. They could have gotten the same kind of guy at their original pick.

  85. 85 Davesbeard said at 8:41 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    No pressure Julio, no pressure

  86. 86 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:41 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Heckert / Walrus now have to make the right picks.

  87. 87 Cliff said at 8:41 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I wonder if teams were calling CLE about moving up to grab a QB and that upped the price ATL had to pay, because that seems like a lot to give up for Julio Jones.

  88. 88 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:43 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Okay, the San Fran pick surprised me

  89. 89 mcud said at 8:43 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I’d love the Redskins to move up and get Gabbert.

  90. 90 Eric said at 8:44 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Kolb to San Fran at 12 am tonight?

  91. 91 TEW! said at 8:44 PM on April 28th, 2011:

First surprise. Could that push Quinn towards us?

  92. 92 dukebowden said at 8:45 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Wow!

  93. 93 Nathan said at 8:45 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Wow, that makes things a little more interesting.

  94. 94 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:45 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Locker over Gabbert??? Wow. Shock city, but let’s get those QBs going.

  95. 95 Jeppe said at 8:46 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Isn’t this making 49ers a natural fit for a Kolb trade-partner? I guess it’s a good thing they didn’t pick Gabbert

  96. 96 Davesbeard said at 8:46 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Wowza Locker!

  97. 97 Cliff said at 8:47 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Locker over Gabbert is probably the right move, right? I know Gabbert was getting all the pre-draft hype, though.

  98. 98 Philanovs said at 8:47 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Holey cow. This is about to get weird.

  99. 99 mcare89 said at 8:47 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Yeah, definitely didn’t see that one coming.

  100. 100 TEW! said at 8:48 PM on April 28th, 2011:

That was huge for the Eagles… Now someone moves up for Gabbert and pushes a corner down to us.

  101. 101 Cliff said at 8:48 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Yay! Gruden and Kiper are fighting already.

  102. 102 Davesbeard said at 8:49 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Prince won’t get past Detroit. Do we like him enough to go get him at 12. Interesting!

  103. 103 Rhinoddd50 said at 8:49 PM on April 28th, 2011:

So far so good for the Eagles, the teams most likely to be interested in Kevin Kolb passed on QB’s early.

  104. 104 Kevin said at 8:50 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Jon Gruden!

Smart pick by the Titans: get your guy.

I hope Dallas takes Tyron Smith. He’s not NFL ready and is a workout warrior.

  105. 105 Superbowlsoon said at 8:50 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Locker was an organizational meltdown pick

  106. 106 dukebowden said at 8:51 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Cowboys trading this pick? Their warroom is eerily inactive.

  107. 107 LeicesterEagles73 said at 8:52 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Jerry is just milking the spotlight taking all this time.

  108. 108 Superbowlsoon said at 8:52 PM on April 28th, 2011:

  109. 109 mcud said at 8:53 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    C’mon Tyron Smith.

  110. 110 dukebowden said at 8:53 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Lot of discussion on NFL Network about the Birds trading into this spot. Sort of hope not.

  111. 111 Superbowlsoon said at 8:53 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I’m still shocked at the horrible Locker pick. That was close to being a Oakland Raider move

  112. 112 mcud said at 8:54 PM on April 28th, 2011:

My guess is Prince to the Cowboys.

  113. 113 Davesbeard said at 8:54 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Wonder if that was us coming for Amukamara, we’ll probably never know!

  114. 114 Eric said at 8:55 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Obviously Prince would be a good pick, but you saw what Atlanta had to give up. It’s just too much.

  115. 115 mcud said at 8:55 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Awesome. Overrated rookie RT for Washburn to attack.

  116. 116 Philanova said at 8:55 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Prince and Quinn could be falling within striking distance here shortly…

  117. 117 dukebowden said at 8:56 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I trust Tommy will find a way to make someone at Novacare tell us, but we might have to wait a year or two down the road.

  118. 118 Superbowlsoon said at 8:56 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Smith doesn’t do anything for me…enjoy Jerry Jones!

  119. 119 MannaFromKevin said at 8:56 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Good pick by Dallas. Their O-line is ancient. Outside of Doug Free, all their other starters are on the downside of their careers.

  120. 120 TEW! said at 8:56 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Don’t like the Boys getting a blindside talent and the Skins getting a QB…

  121. 121 dukebowden said at 8:57 PM on April 28th, 2011:

What does Washington do here? Quinn? Don’t like the idea of blocking him and Orakpo for the next decade.

  122. 122 Boyboy said at 8:58 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I don’t know a thing about Prince. Didn’t really read up on him since I never thought the Eagles would get in sniffing distance. Huge upgrade over Smith?

Could this be going any better for the Eagles? Arizona and SF both should have serious interest in Kolb with their 2nd Round picks plus next year’s 1st Rounder.

  124. 124 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:58 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Glad to see Prince getting into the teens. Doubtful he gets to 23, but keep dropping and he becomes a legit trade up target.

  125. 125 mcud said at 8:59 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Gabbert here makes the most sense as an Eagles fan. Keeps Minnesota open as a possible Kolb landing spot, and gives us a young QB to send the pass rush after for a few years.

  126. 126 Kevin said at 8:59 PM on April 28th, 2011:

If the Boys wanted a blindside tackle, should have taken Costanzo. Smith has a much higher bust rate.

I think the Skins go with Gabbert followed by Quinn to the Texans.

  127. 127 TEW! said at 9:00 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I actually think Jimmy Smith is a better player than Prince, but Prince is a lot safer because of Smith’s drug issues.

  128. 128 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:00 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @Boyboy…

Smith is better than Prince, but there are no character issues with Prince. And we are talking about a guy who’s 6’1, 200 and runs 4.38. Good player. Not special.

  129. 129 ATG said at 9:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @Bigboy

From what I have read, Prince is not an ungrade talent-wise, but a huge upgrade in character and confidence-level.

  130. 130 Davesbeard said at 9:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Another surprise!

  131. 131 Kevin said at 9:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

If Washington managed to trade down, they made a good deal

  132. 132 mcud said at 9:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Lets see how many picks the Redskins picked up.

  133. 133 mcare89 said at 9:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Jacksonville moves up for Gabbert? Interesting move there.

  134. 134 MannaFromKevin said at 9:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@mattwill – what you mean? Can’t trade players can they?

  135. 135 TEW! said at 9:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I’m happy the skins aren’t getting a QB, but I don’t like them getting extra ammo.

  136. 136 Boyboy said at 9:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Gabbert kinda looks hateable.

  137. 137 mcare89 said at 9:03 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Now what does Minnesota do?

  138. 138 mcud said at 9:04 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Minnesota sorta has to trade for either McNabb or Kolb, don’t they?

  139. 139 Philanova said at 9:05 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Hope Houston passes on Prince here. I wonder if they go Quinn in their new 3-4 defense.

  140. 140 -Triumph- said at 9:05 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Well it’s crazy already… Dallas drafting a 1st round tackle, and now the Skins trading down… portends the Eagles taking a LB in the first round? 🙂

  141. 141 mcare89 said at 9:05 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Washington picks up an extra 2nd. Good move for them.

  142. 142 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:06 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @ Triumph…

    Now that’s funny.

  143. 143 Philanova said at 9:07 PM on April 28th, 2011:

JJ Watt to Houston it looks like.

  144. 144 Davesbeard said at 9:07 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Quinn and Amukamara are getting closer and closer!

  145. 145 mcud said at 9:08 PM on April 28th, 2011:

JJ Watt? Howie, get on the phone about Mario Williams. He’s going to be terrible as 3-4 end. 😉

  146. 146 TEW! said at 9:08 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Nice – Watt pushes Quinn and Prince down a bit farther!

  147. 147 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:10 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I am surprised Quinn is falling. He’s a guy we have to make calls about if he’s on the board much longer.

  148. 148 Kammich said at 9:12 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I certainly think the Eagles are being given some food for thought regarding Quinn, Amukamara and even Fairley. If any one of the 3 falls into the 15-17 range, I’d have to think the Eagles pull the trigger.

  149. 149 Kevin said at 9:12 PM on April 28th, 2011:

The Brain Tumor has to be making Quinn slide.
I’m not willing to trade a 2 to move up. Only a 3

  150. 150 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:14 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Long way to go, but some good players are falling that will be of real interest.

  151. 151 Philanova said at 9:15 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Prince not on the phone for the Vikes yet…

  152. 152 TEW! said at 9:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

What does everyone think about Fairly if he keeps falling? I’d love to get a guy who can get pressure up the middle. Would be a nice conciliation prize if Prince and Quinn are gone.

  153. 153 Philanova said at 9:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    WOWWWW. Ponder!

  154. 154 mcare89 said at 9:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

  156. 156 Dirk Diggler said at 9:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

  157. 157 Boyboy said at 9:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Just read a Didinger article that has me excited about Bowers. Of course, I love R-Diddy…..

  158. 158 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:18 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Ponder to Minny. This pushes Prince down toward us more.

  159. 159 Davesbeard said at 9:18 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Hoooooly crap!

  160. 160 ATG said at 9:18 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Cross Minn off the Kolb watch list.

  161. 161 Rhinoddd50 said at 9:19 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Now let’s hope Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick, and Ryan Mallet go somewhere here…at least 1 of them.

  162. 162 Kammich said at 9:19 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Well, Ponder is my #80 player on my big board. Certified 3rd round grade. Congratulations on the -68 value grade, there, Minny. That might be the worst first round grade I’ve ever given a team.

You’re telling me they couldn’t have traded out with someone–ANYONE–to the back of the 1st or early 2nd to get Ponder? Yikes

  163. 163 mcud said at 9:20 PM on April 28th, 2011:

At this point, I’d just sit and wait to see who drops down to #23. I’d be happy with Quinn, Prince, or Fairley.

  164. 164 -Triumph- said at 9:20 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Too crazy with all these meh QB’s going so early.

  165. 165 Rhinoddd50 said at 9:20 PM on April 28th, 2011:

  166. 166 -Triumph- said at 9:21 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I’m interested to see where the DT from Temple is going to go.

  167. 167 Philanova said at 9:21 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Suh and Fairley. That’s frightening.

  168. 168 Davesbeard said at 9:21 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Fairley to Detroit?? I would not want to be a guard or center in the NFC North!!

  169. 169 mcud said at 9:21 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Fairley AND Suh? Thats a push up the middle right there…

  170. 170 mcare89 said at 9:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Wow, that is one hell of a pass rush.

    Keep falling, sweet Prince.

  171. 171 Rhinoddd50 said at 9:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Holy smokes, Jim Schwartz is building a nasty Defense up there in Motor City.

  172. 172 Boyboy said at 9:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    OMG. Good for Detroit.

  173. 173 Dirk Diggler said at 9:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

No mention of teams considering Ryan Kerrigan yet, hoping he continues to slide. Great fit for the Eagles.

  174. 174 Dr. Ogrodnick said at 9:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Fairley looks like he wants nothing to do with Detroit.

  175. 175 TEW! said at 9:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

OK, the Lions DL is officially scary!

  176. 176 Kammich said at 9:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Suh and Fairley patrolling the middle of the DL for the next 10 years in Mo-Town? Naaasty.

Oddly enough, this exact scenario of Fairley to DET happened in my Madden franchise.

…I just lost all credibility for referencing Madden. d’oh.

  177. 177 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I had not even contemplated Fairley to DET. Crazy. They still need a LT for Stafford.

  178. 178 Kevin said at 9:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

The Lions will knock out Cutler from a game at least once.

  179. 179 ATG said at 9:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Fairly lining up next to Suh? That is a solid center to their D.

  180. 180 Eric said at 9:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

What’s the point of Fairley? Sammie Lee Hill has been great for Detroit. Now you’re taking him off the field. I don’t really get the pick at all.

  181. 181 ATG said at 9:24 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Okay, everyone make the same comment at the same time again… ready… go!

  182. 182 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:24 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Sammie Lee Hill is good. Fairley has special potential. If he pans out, DET has the makings of a great DL. Remember us with 92, 99, 96, etc?

  183. 183 Rhinoddd50 said at 9:25 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Here is my only problem with Detroit, until they can keep Stafford healthy they will never win.

They might be guilty of making the same mistake the old Houston Texans under Charlie Casserly did by never building an offensive line to protect David Carr.

  184. 184 Philanova said at 9:25 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Eric – That’s good value, and makes their DT pairing one of the best in the NFL almost immediately.

  185. 185 Philanova said at 9:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Andy Dalton’s girlfriend is a total babe.

  186. 186 ian no 2 said at 9:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

the Dolphins may be trading down to grab OL. That may be the ticket to getting Prince if he’s still there..

  187. 187 mcud said at 9:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I’d like to draft Andy Dalton’s girlfriend.

  188. 188 Rhinoddd50 said at 9:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Detroit must be looking to win alot of game 10-6

  189. 189 Dennis Robinson said at 9:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Tommy, who would you rather the Eagles get Quinn or Kerrigan??

  190. 190 ian no 2 said at 9:27 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @ Rhinoddd50

good point, but there’s no OL value on the board. that was major value for the lions.

  191. 191 Kevin said at 9:28 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Rhino, maybe Det gets an OT in RD2?
Although I think the OG value is better in that round.

  192. 192 Philanova said at 9:28 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Schefter says Quinn to the Rams.

  193. 193 Kammich said at 9:28 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Quinn at #14 is the best value pick of the draft, so far, on my board. +9 value for St. Louis. Spagnuolo is probably doing to Truffle Shuffle right now.

  194. 194 tagryn said at 9:28 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Tommy’ list of possible targets for us is dwindling quick: Watt, Farley, now Quinn…

  195. 195 Davesbeard said at 9:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Amukamara is definitely in trade-up range now!

  196. 196 -Triumph- said at 9:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I like Detroit’s move. They’re making something about that team special instead of just plugging holes.

  197. 197 piercit said at 9:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Ponder going 12th is a shocker. I follow FSU and he is not anywhere near a franchise NFL QB in my mind, but good luck to him. He is a hard working tough kid.

  198. 198 mcare89 said at 9:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Back-to-back QB’s here would be ideal.

  199. 199 Boyboy said at 9:30 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Ingram to Miami?

  200. 200 Rhinoddd50 said at 9:30 PM on April 28th, 2011:

No, I get the value with Fairly. I totally get it.

But the problem is that at some point they have to draft offensive lineman and try to get some good ones. St. Louis had plenty of needs last year, but they went with Roger Saffold at #33 because they knew that if they don’t protect the QB, nothing else matters.

  201. 201 Boyboy said at 9:32 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@ Kammich Can you give us your next 10 best available?

  202. 202 -Triumph- said at 9:32 PM on April 28th, 2011:

  204. 204 Boyboy said at 9:34 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Hey Suzie, let’s be proud to read a letter from a felon on the air. There’s a fine line between a feel-good story and glorifying a criminal (because his son is getting drafted).

  205. 205 mcare89 said at 9:35 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Mike Pouncey.

I am perfectly OK with that pick.

  206. 206 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:36 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Too bad Pouncey went at 15. I was hoping a RB would go here and push Pouncey to Giants.

  207. 207 arby said at 9:36 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I’m late to the game here tonight – any way to get this online like last year????

  208. 208 TEW! said at 9:37 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Pouncey pushes defenders farther down. It’s going VERY well for the Eagles so far. Prince and Smith still there at QB, plus guys like Kerrigan at DE. Worst case someone gets the QB itchnand we grab a future first.

Question: if Smith, Kerrigan, or Prince slip to 23 are you willing to pass for a team offering a 2nd and future 1st?

  209. 209 Dirk Diggler said at 9:37 PM on April 28th, 2011:

What is with Pouncey’s girl? Roof!
As as 1st round pick I expected more.

  210. 210 Kevin said at 9:37 PM on April 28th, 2011:

  225. 225 ian no 2 said at 9:42 PM on April 28th, 2011:

It’s almost certain Jimmy Smith falls to 23 now, which was in doubt before this started. Still if the Iggles stay on the value trade chart, Prince is a great great trade up value anywhere here.

  226. 226 Kevin said at 9:43 PM on April 28th, 2011:

The Pats are pretty good at this; I don’t think I’m going to argue.

  242. 242 ATG said at 9:52 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Dressed up all pretty, but doesn’t tuck in his shirt? Looks like a character concern to me.

  243. 243 Boyboy said at 9:53 PM on April 28th, 2011:

It’s just kinda hard to question what the Patriots do.

  244. 244 TEW! said at 9:53 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Well I hate RK to the skins… But it’s looking really good for the Eagles… Both corners still there, plus a possible trade down for a QB hungry team.

  245. 245 Rhinoddd50 said at 9:54 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Actually, I think the Pats have had their share of stinker drafts. Belichick rules the regular season and the playoffs, but oddly enough he has become human in the draft with his actual picks I mean. Although last year’s draft worked out well for them.

  246. 246 mcud said at 9:54 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Its funny. I LOVE how the Pats stockpile draft picks. I’m just not a big fan of the players they end up taking.

  247. 247 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:54 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Just posted this:

I’m hearing CB Jimmy Smith is now off the Eagles board. We’ll see.

    Prince Amukamara would be great.

Another name to keep in mind…DT Muhammad Wilkerson.

  248. 248 mcud said at 9:54 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Rhino,

Stay out of my head please…

  249. 249 Philanova said at 9:55 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I’m gonna smash something if the Giants take Amukamara.

  250. 250 mcare89 said at 9:55 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Liuget. Makes sense. I figured they’d go DT, but I thought he’d be gone by now and they’d pick Wilkerson.

  251. 251 ATG said at 9:56 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Why would we take a guy off the board now? Isn’t all the homework done?

  252. 252 John C said at 9:57 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Big slide for Prince and to some degree for Jordan.

I can’t believe Belicheat did not take a 5 technique there.

If Tampa passes on Bowers, will the Eagles consider him?

The idea of Ingram to the Giants scares me more than any pick to any team thus far.

  255. 255 -Triumph- said at 9:58 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I would be good with Wilkerson, he would be a good fit.

  256. 256 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:58 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Say no to Bowers. Too many red flags.

  257. 257 Rhinoddd50 said at 9:58 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Giants go RB or OL here I hope.
Tampa Bay is a big risk to go CB with the Talib problems
I doubt KC goes CB, I think they go OL
Colts might go CB, but they could go CB or OL

The Eagles actually have some hope that Amukamara falls to #23. That would be awesome

  258. 258 Kev said at 9:59 PM on April 28th, 2011:

If smith is off the board does that mean he is a turd?

Also chnces of trading Kolb to Arizona for Petterson?

  259. 259 John C said at 9:59 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I don’t think the Giants can go wrong with either Castonzo or Ingram. I think Ingram makes sense for them.

  265. 265 Boyboy said at 10:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Shit

  267. 267 John C said at 10:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Damn!!!! That sucks ass. I can’t believe they did that.

Both the Redskins and Giants taking the guys that were ideal fits for us.

    Awful

  268. 268 mcud said at 10:03 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Trade out. Trade out. Trade out.

It would have cost us a 4th, or at most, a 3rd to move up. The Eagles obviously didn’t want him.

  276. 276 MannaFromKevin said at 10:05 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Tommy – Trade down rather than take Smith?

  277. 277 TEW! said at 10:05 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Damn… I was hoping he’d fall to us.

What this tells me is the Eagles didn’t like Amukamara that much, otherwise they would have made a move for him.

I think the Eagles really want to trade down OR they are perfectly fine with Jimmy Smith.

  278. 278 Matt said at 10:06 PM on April 28th, 2011:

How many QB’s are left that could go in a run? Could we start a run by letting a team trade up?

  279. 279 mcud said at 10:06 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @Manna

Or, trade down AND take Smith much later. If Jimmy is that much of a turd though, I’d rather just trade back and take Aaron Williams or Dowling.

  280. 280 Kevin said at 10:06 PM on April 28th, 2011:

So no one wants Mark Ingram? If that’s the case, and you can’t trade down, who do you take?

  281. 281 John C said at 10:07 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Hopefully this strategy will pay off. It was tough to watch players in reach that seemed to be such great fits for us, and not make the move to get them.

Both Kerrigan and Prince were very much in striking distance tonight.

  282. 282 -Triumph- said at 10:09 PM on April 28th, 2011:

What would you think if the Eagles took the OT from Boston College.

  283. 283 Alohadelphia said at 10:10 PM on April 28th, 2011:

One of my favorite parts of the draft is constantly going from hoping a pick falls to us and becomes a 10-year starter because he’s such a quality prospect to desperately hoping he is a bust and was clearly overrated. So nice to have real offseason football.

  284. 284 MannaFromKevin (formerly dawkinspwns) said at 10:10 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Triumph – at this point I don’t want them spending a 1st on an OT. Trade back and grab an OT in 2nd.

  285. 285 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:11 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Not trying to rationalize here…because Prince and Kerrigan were among my favorite players.

    But…

Washburn has a bunch of DE’s to work with and at CB I think the Eagles are saying they are going after a veteran CB somehow…either in FA or trade.

  286. 286 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:11 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @ Alohadelphia…

Know exactly what you mean. Hero becomes enemy in a friggin hurry.

  287. 287 MannaFromKevin (formerly dawkinspwns) said at 10:12 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Alohadelphia HAHAHA yeah I hear ya there

  288. 288 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:12 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Alohadelphia…outstanding! That was funny.

  289. 289 Philanova said at 10:13 PM on April 28th, 2011:

At this point, if the Eagles don’t trade back, I think it’s Bowers, Wilkerson, or Cam Jordan. DL is the value at 23 it looks like.

  290. 290 TEW! said at 10:13 PM on April 28th, 2011:

So what are the chances we go with Bowers?

  291. 291 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:14 PM on April 28th, 2011:

The Eagles already have 1 Mircrofracture surgery special at DE, I am not really excited by adding another.

  292. 292 -Triumph- said at 10:14 PM on April 28th, 2011:

  293. 293 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:15 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Hope the Chiefs go O-Line here…

  294. 294 -Triumph- said at 10:16 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Microfracture surgery for a guy that young is a horrible sign. I would stay away from that.

  295. 295 mattwill said at 10:16 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Triumph and MannaFromKevin, I really don’t want an OT in the 1st. James Carpenter in the 2nd is a much better value if the FO really feels they need an OT. Jah Reid and Willie Smith even later are good values as well.

  296. 296 Boyboy said at 10:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Vodka + Gatorade = Most hydrated, inebriated man in the world. Also makes for a heavy-eyed man. Here’s hoping the Eagles make a pick (even if a trade down is the best move).

  297. 297 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:19 PM on April 28th, 2011:

What the heck are the Browns doing? They took a 3-4 NT going back to a 4-3 with Atyba Rubin already on the team? That just doesn’t make sense to me.

  298. 298 Philanova said at 10:20 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Phil Taylor to the Browns, Costanzo to the Colts. Birds are essentially on the clock.

  299. 299 MannaFromKevin (formerly dawkinspwns) said at 10:20 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@mattwill Agreed. At this point the OT talent isn’t that great a value in the 1st.

  300. 300 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:20 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Costanzo to Colts.

I hope the Eagles don’t pick Carimi, Marvin Austin, or Bowers here. Would not excite me in the least.

  301. 301 TEW! said at 10:21 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I really like what the Browns are doing.

So now we’re looking at Smith, Jordan as an alternative BPA, or maybe a guy like Wilkerson.

I want Smith, or if his character is that bad, a trade back.

  302. 302 dukebowden said at 10:21 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Heckert likes fooling 3-4 teams by trading into their pick and taking the guy they were probably targeting later. Gocong redux!

  303. 303 TEW! said at 10:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Ugghhh, forgot about Carimi. I really do not want him. We need a SPECIAL player, and he may be solid but he will never be special.

  304. 304 mcud said at 10:22 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Please, please, please, trade back.

  305. 305 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Eagles will be up in a moment. My guess is Wilkerson or trade back. Sleeper is CB Ras-I Dowling.

  306. 306 arby said at 10:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Isn’t Cam Jordan still out there? Whoa, I see 2 OL going here next.

  307. 307 John C said at 10:24 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I like Carimi and think he might be an excellent right tackle… but I agree, I would rather see a trade back or take a chance on Jimmy Smith.

I’m surprised Jordan is available, but am just not sure how he would work in our scheme.

  308. 308 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:24 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Holmgren must be trying to recreate his Green Bay D-Line from the 90’s when he had guys like Gilbert Brown in the middle.

  309. 309 dukebowden said at 10:24 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Is Wilkerson good Tommy? Is he a Washburn guy?

  310. 310 mcare89 said at 10:25 PM on April 28th, 2011:

This is from John Tamari of the Inquirer:

#Eagles staff here in NY watching selections on TV and pumping fists … they like someone coming their way.

  311. 311 Alohadelphia said at 10:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I also love the slow-motion staredown sequence after certain picks, sometimes you have to question the players willingness to be a part of those. I still think there’s hope for Jimmy to be a Bird.

  312. 312 John C said at 10:26 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Wilkerson seems like an odd fit to me.

Wouldn’t Dowling be quite a reach? No matter what they do they should not reach.

  330. 330 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Sometimes it works out, sometimes it does not… but it is rarely predictable.

  333. 333 dukebowden said at 10:30 PM on April 28th, 2011:

The Eagles are going to claim BPA, but I’m having none of it. Pure reach for a need. Exactly how you shouldn’t approach the draft.

  334. 334 MannaFromKevin (formerly dawkinspwns) said at 10:30 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Now we’re going to have to hear even more about how this is “such an Andy Reid pick” and how he loves his o-linemen in the 1st round. Ya know, now that Watkins will be his 2nd ever 1st round o-line pick.

  335. 335 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:31 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I think Danny Watkins is a super solid pick…he fills this team’s biggest need outside of RCB. I am not sure he is great value at #23, but if this guy isn’t a solid starter from Day 1 I will be surprised.

I never saw it coming. But we all knew if the Eagles picked a guy in the 1st it would be somebody that nobody expected.

  336. 336 Arby said at 10:31 PM on April 28th, 2011:

he may be older but he’s only got 4 years of wear on those tires – bottomline is he’s a winning kid. Great pick. I love this guy.

  337. 337 Philanova said at 10:34 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Honestly I’m most frustrated by his age. Part of the great part of the draft is that you’re picking players who you anticipate manning the field for a decade. Watkins is a player that we may be getting 3-4 years less out of than your average draft pick.

  338. 338 mcud said at 10:34 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I would rather have taken a QB. At that age, Watkins has 3rd round value.

  339. 339 Kevin said at 10:35 PM on April 28th, 2011:

A guard is a bad positional value
A 26 year old is not going to play for 10 years

So all in all, horrific reach by Howie Roseman.

I like Watkins the player. I greatly dislike Watkins at 23. Wrong pick.

  340. 340 -Triumph- said at 10:36 PM on April 28th, 2011:

He’s a tough, dirty player… and there’s no question that we needed some help at that position.

I don’t have a problem with this pick at all.

  341. 341 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:36 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Mcud, totally understand, but I think this is a guy that will be very popular in Philly once he gets on the field.

  342. 342 mcud said at 10:36 PM on April 28th, 2011:

  344. 344 mcare89 said at 10:37 PM on April 28th, 2011:

It’s not a horrific reach at all.

  345. 345 arby said at 10:37 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Now let’s trade up in round 2 and get Ras-I

  346. 346 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:39 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Guys, seriously, I can’t say this pick was great value, but I can honestly say I have never trusted a 1st round pick the Eagles have made to be successful more than this guy.

  347. 347 -Triumph- said at 10:39 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I don’t give a crap about 10 years. I like someone who can help right away and give Vick some time to make great things happen.

If Watkin’s is Mudd’s guy… well… in Mudd We Trust.

  349. 349 dukebowden said at 10:39 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Never mind the age. Guy has to be a pro bowler to justify taking a guard in the first round.

Our defense needs an infusion of first-round talent and didn’t get it.

I won’t be happy unless Watkins makes the Pro Bowl or we win the Super Bowl.

  350. 350 mcud said at 10:40 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Its all about value. It always has been. You take a kid with no experience who is actually older than the guy you expect to be replacing, and you use your 1st rounder to do it. Not to mention, there are kids who represent serious value left on the board. The kid you took will be at least 31 before his 1st contract is up, and plays an interior line position, the one area where you can always find quality in the mid-rounds.

F this pick. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

  351. 351 ATG said at 10:40 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I can’t say this is a pick I was excited to hear, but his interview sounded like a guy I am proud to have represent my team.

  352. 352 Kevin said at 10:41 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I just don’t believe you take TEs, guards, ILBs in RD1. You can find those guys later. Is Watkins THAT much better than Ijalana/Boling/Wisnewski?

We went for need. While I get the logic, I don’t agree with it. I’d have preferred trading down.

Good night all. I will be looking forward to reading the write-up in the morning.

  354. 354 Kammich said at 10:45 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I groaned last year when we passed on Earl Thomas. I’ve groaned this year when we passed on Jimmy Smith.

But in both cases, I was happy with who we got. Watkins might be an older prospect, but he’s got a meanstreak and he fits the Eagles’ profile. There is depth at CB in this draft, and there will be plenty of good ones to be had in the 2nd. If somehow someone like Ras-I Dowling continues to fall and the Eagles can nab him at some point in the 2nd, I’d go from “fairly happy” to “THRILLED” with this draft.

  355. 355 Matt said at 10:46 PM on April 28th, 2011:

He goes earlier than our pick in a lot of mocks and one of the nfl guys had him going to us. While he is 26, if you can get 8 years of starting experience out of him, it could make sense.

And clearly this was a Mudd pick, so to ask whether he is that much better than what we could have gotten in the mid rounds, well, the answer for Mudd is clearly, YES, he is worth it.

  356. 356 -Triumph- said at 10:48 PM on April 28th, 2011:

But, it’s not all about value. It’s about who can help you the most.

It’s about finding the pieces of the puzzle that fit best.

  357. 357 John C said at 10:48 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I really don’t know what to think.

I am going to pretend he is the next Steve Hutchinson until proven otherwise.

  358. 358 MannaFromKevin (formerly dawkinspwns) said at 10:49 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Matt – True enough. If Mudd is known for taking late round guys or UDFAs and turning them into starters, if he wanted Danny Watkins then he must see something special about this kid. Sorry… he’s a year older than I am (and I’ve been out of college just under 4 years)… I guess I can’t call him a “kid”.

  359. 359 mattwill said at 10:49 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Now let’s trade up in round 2 and get Jimmy Smith

  360. 360 mcare89 said at 10:50 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @mcud

I think our interior line last year showed that it isn’t as easy to find depth in the mid-rounds.

  361. 361 mcud said at 10:50 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I think this is the worst investment of resources that Andy Reid has ever made. I hated the Paul Fanaika pick, but that was a late rounder. Same with Tony Hunt. Same with Stacy Andrews, but that was only money.

Watkins at #23 is simply terrible. I’ll read everyones’ thoughts with an open mind, but I cannot remember a time when I was as frustrated with a pick as I am right now.

  362. 362 Dirk Diggler said at 10:50 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Mcud who do you think was left at 23 that “represented serious value”

  363. 363 MannaFromKevin (formerly dawkinspwns) said at 10:51 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Well at least we didn’t take James Carpenter.

  364. 364 arby said at 10:52 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Carpenter – now THAT is the definition of a reach.

  365. 365 John C said at 10:53 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Carpenter over Carimi?

I’m with you matt… do something special here tomorrow…

We took 13 guys last year. This draft should be more about quality.

  366. 366 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:54 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I thought Watkins should have went in the 2nd / early 3rd round because of his age only…not his ability. But I said I thought he was the most NFL ready offensive lineman in this draft.

In Mudd’s system I think Watkins could play all 5 positions. If Watkins was 22, I would have liked him as a better prospect than Mike Pouncey.

  367. 367 Boyboy said at 10:55 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Interesting thing (to me) about this pick is that last year when Logan Mankins was holding out and I was saying, “go get him”, the response I always heard was “the price would be too steep” and/or “you don’t give up that much for an interior lineman”. Here we are spending a 1st round pick on a 26 year old guard who is unproven.

With that being said, I’ve always questioned the Eagles philosophy of staffing the interior OL with mid-round players. Think about it. 2004 SuperBowl – no Shawn Andrews – the interior OL was terrorized. Since Andrews has been gone, it’s been a revolving door. Yeah, we’ve always got good production from marginal talent, but in 2009 and 2010 the play at C and RG heavily contributed to early exits in the Playoffs.

To this move, I say kudos. Change your philosophy to get better at a position of need. Mike McGlynn is just a guy. Same with MJG. Same with Nick Cole. I’ve been a heavy flag waver for change within the organization. I never thought I’d be so excited by an offensive guard as I am now.

  368. 368 Matt said at 10:55 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Also, for those complaining about age, he LOOKS like he is about 20, so thats gotta count for something.

  369. 369 mcud said at 10:57 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I won’t lie and say there aren’t 20 players I’d rather have than Watkins. To me, the most value would have been to trade down, even if your target would eventually have been Watkins.

Wilkerson, Ingram, Williams, Cam Jordan, Smith, Ayers, Bowers, Dowling, Houston, Reed, Kapernick, Baldwin, Sheard, and Carpenter are all players I would have GREATLY preferred to Watkins.

  370. 370 Rhinoddd50 said at 10:57 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Boyboy, some good points. Only think I would say about Mankins, is that he would have cost $50 Million dollars at that age. Watkins is going to cost $6M.

  371. 371 -Triumph- said at 10:59 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Baltimore traded out

  372. 372 Kammich said at 11:01 PM on April 28th, 2011:

my sister keeps texting me saying that if we were gonna take a Canadian, we should’ve taken Claude Giroux.

Giroux would probably be a pretty good kicker, ey?

    hosers.

  373. 373 MannaFromKevin (formerly dawkinspwns) said at 11:02 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@Triumph – No Baltimore passed. They didn’t make a pick. They can pick at any point now though after KC picks. Or as they said, NE could beat them to the punch and have a pick ready too. But prob Baltimore goes after KC. Sounded like Baltimore trying to make a trade and didn’t get it done in time.

  374. 374 Alohadelphia said at 11:03 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Not in love with his value more than his age, but you really can’t hate this pick as it did solidify a weakness and gave us many options. It was just an, “…eh” anticlimactic kind of pick. He seems comparable to Pouncey who went at 15, so he may turn out to be a pretty quality value pick.

  375. 375 justwin1 said at 11:03 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Watkins may be OK as a player, but I’m having a very difficult time believing the Eagles couldn’t have traded down for him at least a handful of spots, still picked Watkins, and picked up more ammo.

  376. 376 MannaFromKevin (formerly dawkinspwns) said at 11:05 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@justwin1 – To trade down you gotta have a trading partner. Maybe there just wasn’t anyone interested in trading up to #23. Can’t do much about that.

  377. 377 Alohadelphia said at 11:05 PM on April 28th, 2011:

If nothing else, we freed up some cash not investing in Mankins and now can spend that (semi-irrationally) on Nnamdi.

  378. 378 -Triumph- said at 11:07 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Look, if he’s good, it’s a good pick, and if he sucks, it’s a bad pick. It’s not that tough to analyze.

  379. 379 -Triumph- said at 11:08 PM on April 28th, 2011:

ok, so Baltimore gets Jimmy Smith a pick late.

  380. 380 John C said at 11:08 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Will be interesting to see how Danny Watkins stacks up to these guys.

  381. 381 mcud said at 11:09 PM on April 28th, 2011:

My God. The Pats just got a 2 and a 1st rounder next year for trading back.

  382. 382 Tommy Lawlor said at 11:10 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I’m sure the Eagles did consider moving back, but there is no guarantee Watkins would have lasted. SEA is calling James Carpenter a G. I bet they would have grabbed Watkins if he was on the board.

I love the player. Value is off. I’m not going to get down on us upgrading the protection for Michael Vick. We can make it to the SB if he’s healthy, but can’t if he’s hurt and watching from the sideline.

  383. 383 Dirk Diggler said at 11:10 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Jimmy Smith sitting next to Drew Rosenhaus looks like such a prick. He’s only been arrested twice before he was 20. At least we got a player we can be proud of is on our team.

  384. 384 Rhinoddd50 said at 11:10 PM on April 28th, 2011:

The Eagles might have felt they couldn’t trade down very far. Ironically the teams that had been sniffing around Watkins the most were New England and KC.

The word is the Seattle Seahawks were trying feverishly to trade the 25th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. With no suitors, the Seahawks kept the pick and went with Alabama offensive tackle James Carpenter.

After Jake Locker going eighth overall to the Titans, this has to be the most surprising pick of the first round. Carpenter played two seasons for Alabama and was a solid, dependable guard. He’s really not what you’re looking for in a first-round pick, though.

Many considered Carpenter a likely second rounder at best. To see him go in the first round is peculiar.

  387. 387 Kevin said at 11:13 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    I’d rather have NO’s 2nd rounder + 2012 1st rounder than Danny Watkins. That’s the proper value.

Belicheck = Genius. He needs to retire

  388. 388 Alohadelphia said at 11:13 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    @Triumph

Well, no shit. But it’s our jobs as fanatical Bird’s fans to dissect everything about the pick…down to Watkins’ form carrying victims out of burning buildings.

  389. 389 Dirk Diggler said at 11:15 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Looks like Seattle couldn’t get a deal done to trade down and reached for Carpenter since Watkins the higher rated G by most was already off the board. Maybe the Eagles couldn’t trade down after all, and doesn’t look like Watkins would have been there even a few picks later.

  390. 390 arby said at 11:17 PM on April 28th, 2011:

And Rhino, maybe that’s why the Pats just traded out and why the Eagles had to take him at 23

  391. 391 Rhinoddd50 said at 11:20 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Even though I disagreed, the rest of the NFL felt that Watkins was a 1st round pick. If I go along with that opinion over mine than Watkins was my favorite offensive lineman as a player.

Ben Ijalana is the guy who I thought might have the most upside, but he is going to need some time.

  394. 394 Tommy Lawlor said at 11:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Carimi could play LT on that cow pasture the Bears call a field. Better fit at RT though.

This is gonna be Mo Wilkerson. Great situation for him.

  396. 396 mcud said at 11:23 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Well, I’ve made my feelings on Watkins clear. That said, I’ll be a big fan of his, as I’m now counting on him to be a very good or Pro Bowl caliber RG. At the very least, he better win the job early and not have the same learning curve that others might have had.

Go back up and get me Dowling or Aaron Williams (or both) and I’ll be okay.

  397. 397 Tommy Lawlor said at 11:24 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Curious to see GB and PIT. Solid teams that make smart picks.

  398. 398 Rhinoddd50 said at 11:24 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Arby,

I never even gave Watkins a second thought for the Eagles because I assumed he was going to be a Patriot who were eyeing him up to replace Mankins. He seemed like the classic Belichick selection to me.

  399. 399 Kammich said at 11:27 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I don’t think there’s any question that Seattle would’ve taken Watkins at #25 if he was on the board. In that sense, the Eagles must’ve gotten the guy they wanted. Clearly, Smith had abortioned himself right off the board. I still think the Eagles could come to regret that, but my tune will change mighty quickly if we get a Dowling or Curtis Brown in the 2nd tomorrow night.

I’m just sitting here, asking myself just how bad Da’Quan Bowers’ knee must be for him to still be on the board. If reports are to be believed, Jimmy Smith was practically Jared Leto in “Requiem for a Dream” and still got drafted by the Ravens. I can’t help but feel bad for Bowers. We’re talking millions, and millions of dollars here for a kid that had nothing but a medical deficiency. He didn’t pull a Benicio Del Toro in “Fear and Loathing” like Jimmy Smith.

  400. 400 Rhinoddd50 said at 11:28 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    Mcud,

Agreed on Watkins re the learning curve. The whole selling point on him to overlook the age was the ready from Day 1 factor. He definitely should be ready to play early. No 3 year learning curves like with Winston Justice.

  401. 401 John C said at 11:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Just about all PIT 1st round picks become quality starters or pro bowlers. Chances are Hayward becomes a 10 year starter. They usually take guys that make logical sense to everyone, too.

I wish we had half as good a track record in round 1 as they do…

  402. 402 TEW! said at 11:29 PM on April 28th, 2011:

I would have had no problem with the pick if he was 21 or 22 or even 23 years old.

But you just can NOT use a top 25 pick on a 27 year old. it is BEYOND retarded.

Who ever said it’s all about value is right on. This is terrible value. You could get him in the 2nd. Or maybe even the 3rd. The draft is about finding long term starters. Unless this kid plays at a high level until he is 37 years old, we aren’t getting a lot in return.

More so, the kid has to step in and start right away, because if he doesn’t you’ve lost literally 20% of his expected playing career.

This was a serious miscalculation. I thought Eagle45 made a great point on the EMB. Wouldn’t the Patriots have gladly traded us Mankins for that pick? He’s the same age, and already a probowler.

  403. 403 Rhinoddd50 said at 11:32 PM on April 28th, 2011:

    TEW,

Watkins was getting drafted in the 1st round tonight by somebody. I have been questioning his value for months due to his age, but frankly the rest of the NFL disagreed with me.

You, me, Mcud, Tommy, etc might question the value at #23, but most NFL scouts did not.

  404. 404 mcare89 said at 11:33 PM on April 28th, 2011:

“You could get him in the 2nd. Or maybe even the 3rd.”

No, you couldn’t. He probably would’ve been gone by #25.

  405. 405 Kammich said at 11:34 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Honestly, the age thing doesn’t bother me. Of any position in the NFL, offensive linemen have the longest legs. If he lives up to his draft status, Watkins will still be an effective player well into the life of his 2nd contract. We’re not drafting a 27-year-old runningback here.

The larger concern would be that he was a college LT who is only a few years into playing American football. But I have faith in the Eagles coaching staff, specifically Reid and Mudd, to know what they’re doing here. If they felt the kid was worth taking at #23, then, hell… so do I.

For the record, he was #26 on my big board. A -3 in total value for a 1st round pick is actually pretty good, especially compared to a number of the other 1st round picks tonight.

  406. 406 Tommy Lawlor said at 11:35 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Rhino and I were discussing Watkins as a 1st rounder back in Jan or Feb. He would go nuts every time I suggested it was even possible.

  407. 407 -Triumph- said at 11:37 PM on April 28th, 2011:

If you are getting microfracture surgery, that’s extremely serious. It means you have bone-on-bone with the knees producing no cartilage, and a surgeon essentially takes an awl and creates little fractures in the knee hoping to coax the knee into creating new cartilage.

It’s never as good as the original cartilage, and sometimes after a couple of years they have to do it again.

  408. 408 Rhinoddd50 said at 11:38 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Just to repeat, I am okay with this pick assuming that Watkins is what I thought he was…the most NFL ready offensive lineman in this draft.

If he struggles early, and is slow to adjust to the NFL, I reserve the right to change my opinion. He needs to be a better than average starter by his 2nd season.

  409. 409 Tommy Lawlor said at 11:39 PM on April 28th, 2011:

Eagles discussed Da’Quan Bowers at 23, but I’m glad they passed on him. We don’t have good luck with knees.

I do feel bad for Bowers. Oh well. He’ll be drafted eventually and he’ll have his chance to prove the doubters wrong.

    Good night everybody!

One last note. Mel has Ras-I Dowling as the 5th best CB remaining. Do you all agree with this? I hear a lot of folks wanting to trade up into the early 2nd round to take him. Don’t think he’ll be around for the 10th pick of the 2nd round (which we got from the Redskins)?

  411. 411 Rhinoddd50 said at 11:47 PM on April 28th, 2011:

OK, I’ve let the pick settle…

If he steps in from week one and gives us near pro bowl quality play, I can see the pick making sense. But even one season of development amounts to 20% of his likely shelf life.

  415. 415 -Triumph- said at 11:59 PM on April 28th, 2011:

@TEW, he’s got low mileage on those wheels… might last longer than you think.

  417. 417 Kammich said at 12:43 AM on April 29th, 2011:

Spuds would call his wife the safest pick in the draft. I no longer take Spadaro’s words with “a grain of salt,” I take them with “a chunk of rabbit shit.”

I’m a massive Dowling fan. #22 on my big board. I live in Virginia Beach, VA… by way of Wilkes-Barre. I get every UVA game locally on TV, and I’ve been to 3 of Dowling’s contests in person. I can say, with confidence, that had injuries not derailed his Senior season he would’ve been taken before Amukamara. I think he’s a very nice fit opposite Samuels, allowing us to keep Hanson rightfully in the slot and groom the likes of Lindley and Hughes.

  418. 418 dukebowden said at 1:40 AM on April 29th, 2011:

So, I’ve let it settle for awhile but yeah, still terrible.

And the fact that Ozzie Newsome was comfortable with Jimmy Smith pretty much confirms in my mind that he will become a great NFL defender…at a position that couldn’t be more of a need for us.

This pick reminds me of the Mike Patterson one. Probably a solid player, but not going to have any real impact on wins and losses.

My personal philosophy on the draft just runs completely counter to the Eagles on a pick like this. First rounders are for guys with the potential to be game changers. You don’t spend one on an interior offensive linemen from Canada, especially when your team doesn’t really run the ball, has the best O-line coach in the league and is built around the most mobile quarterback in NFL history.

Eagles had very few issues scoring points last year. But the defense lacks talent and is simply not playoff-caliber. Today, in my opinion, we veered further off the track to building a Super Bowl worthy D.

“You don’t spend one on an interior offensive linemen […] especially when your team […] has the best O-line coach in the league […].”

That fact, actually, is the very reason I’m tempering my “OMFG” urge to freak out about this pick. Mudd knows what he’s doing. He’s been in and around the NFL the majority of his adult life. If there’s someone in this league who can see what an offensive lineman can be in this league, it’s Howard Mudd. Jeff Saturday was a discard. Mudd saw what he could be and made him into a Pro Bowler.

    In Mudd We Trust…
