PHI at ATL – 2nd half

Posted: September 18th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 194 Comments »

Wild 1st half. Too many mistakes by Eagles. Should have led 13-7 or 17-7.  Instead, huge goal line turnover leads to 14-10 deficit.

RED ZONE:
Atlanta 2 for 2
Eagles 1 for 3

That’s the big difference in the game.

Run defense looked bad early on.  Turner had 2 carries for 23 yards.  Since then he’s had 11 for 28.  Looks like the LBs are moving up closer to the LOS.  Hard to tell without studying the plays, so that’s just a guess for now.

We’ve outgained the Falcons 222-98.  Clean up the mistakes and we’ll win.

Interesting stat…we’ve given up 3 TDs this season.  All of the TD drives began in Eagles territory.  Pin the offense deep and we seem to be okay.

Here we go.

That play will be much discussed, but it looks like if anyone missed an assignment it was DeVan. Kelce was supposed to be moving to the outside right after the snap. Happens.

Glad guys who looked hurt weren’t hurt.

Hopefully the Dirty Birds D will get very, very, tired… they are looking at my key chain, very very tired. They will be a little tired. Majestic birds need big plays. Then the running game gets going.

Steve Smith is on our team.

Atlanta is averaging 31 yards per scoring drive. That makes it a bit easier.

  58. 58 Anonymous said at 2:44 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Right now, DeSean is making the point that if they don’t pay him now, he’s going to force them to pay him even more later. I’m loving his attitude, especially because I don’t think you could fault him to much for being frustrated with his contract.

  119. 119 Jonathan said at 3:21 AM on September 19th, 2011:

It seems like some kind of cruel irony that Vick gets hurt staying in the pocket on a play that any QB could have been hurt on. And, when all the talking heads start saying this was inevitable when you play the way Vick does, it will confirm they don’t know what they’re talking about.

  120. 120 Morton said at 3:21 AM on September 19th, 2011:

  130. 130 Morton said at 3:31 AM on September 19th, 2011:

I mean seriously, you spend all that money on defensive free agents but the mediocre Falcons put up 5 TDs on you? Wow. Why not just put a bunch of rookies on the field instead? It’d have the same net effect.

  136. 136 Morton said at 3:35 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Seriously, even if they win, do you feel at all confident that they can win a playoff game against a good team if they cough up leads and give up easy-as-pie TDs at the drop of a hat?

  138. 138 Eric Weaver said at 3:38 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Not that I disagree with you, but didn’t you watch GB give up 400+ yards to Cam Newton? And all those yards were not in garbage time.

  139. 139 Morton said at 3:40 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Who’s to say that Green Bay even has a good defense this year? These things vary from year to year.

But I know damn well that Green Bay didn’t give up more than 26 points once last year, and that was 31 points to the New England Patriots, which is alot more understandable than giving up 35 to the Falcons.

What sucks is you need a TD. But more than likely Reid would kick a FG then hope the defense stops the Falcons.

  143. 143 Eric Weaver said at 3:40 AM on September 19th, 2011:

I’m hoping this isn’t a typical Eagles game where they have a great drive to only come up short in the end.

Thinking back to the Robinson-Maclin play, it was dirty, but I’m not so sure it was intentionally. Robinson looked like he didn’t understand what was wrong immediately after.

Eagles are more talented. Clearly not better.

  148. 148 Morton said at 3:44 AM on September 19th, 2011:

It’s absolutely ridiculous to put ANY blame on the offense.

If you score 31 points in the NFL, you absolutely should win

ESPECIALLY if you spent all offseason throwing money at defensive free agents. To come away giving up not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but FIVE touchdowns? Are you nuts? They could have kept Sean McDermott, kept Dimitri Patterson, kept Ernie Sims and they would have achieved the SAME result.

  149. 149 Anonymous said at 3:48 AM on September 19th, 2011:

What about all the turnovers? That was on the defense as well?

  150. 150 Morton said at 3:50 AM on September 19th, 2011:

How about making a stop in the red zone? Is that so hard to do?

Again, we could have kept the McDermott defense intact from last year if we wanted to see EZ MODE REDZONE TDs.

  157. 157 Morton said at 3:56 AM on September 19th, 2011:

The point is, in the red zone, you could make a stop. Good defenses make stops in the red zones and hold teams to field goals.

Why does the defense still roll over in the red zone and allow EZ mode TDs?

  158. 158 the guy said at 3:59 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Because the defense has a short field.

Until the 4th, I thought the D played well. Then they seemed to give up. You want to say they sucked in the 4th, fair enough. But 3 of the 5 TDs came from a short field, and only 1 TD went to a WR.

  159. 159 Morton said at 4:01 AM on September 19th, 2011:

There is this thing called “Red Zone Defense”, which is defense played within, um, the Red Zone.

Good defenses will have a low TD% rate in the Red Zone. Bad defenses, such as, say, last year’s Eagles, will give up a high % of TDs within the red zone. This year’s Eagles seem little improved in that aspect.

You do realize that once the opposing team enters the red zone, a TD is not a foregone conclusion, nor should it be?

  160. 160 the guy said at 4:29 AM on September 19th, 2011:

No, but if they’re generally starting from just outside the RZ it makes it a bit tougher to deal with.

Well men it was a tough night for all of us, except Morton of course as he’s most likely popping his grape champagne punch, but lots to improve on in a long season.

p.s. MACLIN HOW COULD U DROP THAT BALL AFTER THE NIGHT YOU HAD????!!!! (cue single tear drop rolling down my cheek)

  162. 162 the guy said at 3:50 AM on September 19th, 2011:

    Nightmare game.

Loss stolen from 10 point lead late. Lots of injuries to critical players. Offensive playcalling far too tricky for no real reason. Defense gave up in 4th quarter allowing 2 80yd TD drives.

Last week was an ugly win. This was an ugly loss that was handed away, with injuries as the icing.

I’ve been saying that the O-Line was going to get Vick knocked out, but I never thought it would be our O-Line that actually knocked him out.

  169. 169 Anonymous said at 4:00 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Agree. There is a lot to like about this team. Vick has to learn to read the blitz. That killed us and injured him. As good as this team is, we can only go as far as he takes us. We have to find a solution to the TE problem (try a bigger LB?) because Tony Gonzo basically just beat us by himself.

  170. 170 Matt Ditty said at 3:51 AM on September 19th, 2011:

That stinks. The Eagles had the game.

With Vick, they were the better team. If it weren’t for a couple of turnovers, it wouldn’t have been close. Without Vick, the Falcons were the better team.

So here’s hoping Vick is OK.

  180. 180 Steve H said at 4:04 AM on September 19th, 2011:

One day Tommy, one day we will have a linebacker who can cover TE’s. I just know I’ll see it in my lifetime…

Was anyone else really pissed we went to another WR screen on our last 3rd down there? I hated that play call, we’d already tapped that well twice, you think they might be sitting on something like that again? Plus Kafka was showing he knew what he was doing, give the kid a chance to run a regular passing play.

It’s hard to be pissed at a guy who went for 170 yards and 2 td’s, but somehow I’m managing to do it.

  181. 181 Anonymous said at 4:04 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Does anyone think the current LB’s are the answer…c’mon – how on earth do you hand a rookie Casey Mathews the starting MLB – not that Chaney and Fokou distinguished themselves….the run defense is absolutely ridiculous…this is a joke! Morton is right – you put 31 on the board – you should win – with the talent on D – not looking good for the long haul!

  183. 183 Anonymous said at 4:21 AM on September 19th, 2011:

I can’t fault him for that, we didn’t even get a proper replay till 5 minutes later

  184. 184 Jon Blank said at 4:43 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Doesn’t matter. The play was close enough and important enough to challenge, especially when you still have both challenges left. But Andy is a terrible game day manager, so not surprising he blew it. I wonder if his Castillo failure will ultimately be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and costs him his job.

  185. 185 Anonymous said at 3:38 AM on September 20th, 2011:

In hindsight it’s obvious Reid should have challenged that call. Yet I’m amazed at everyone’s anger at Andy Reid. Every official missed the call, no one in the booth saw it, yet fans are pissed that the man standing 60 feet away on the sideline blocked by all the players on the field didn’t get a clear view of the play? It makes more sense to be angry at the refs who blew the call in the first place.

  186. 186 Anonymous said at 4:27 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Hearing and reading fans’ opinion and impressions from the game is depressing, I will go to sleep

  187. 187 Jon Blank said at 4:41 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Juan Castillo blows. Sorry. Just the way it is, 35 points, 5 tds on 5 red zone appearances, and a blown 10 point lead in the 4th quarter is unacceptable. In fact, its the same crap that got Mcdermott fired. We just traded in big pass plays for big run plays, and only because we threw money at the problem, not because Juan solved.

Fat Andy continued to be his usual, arrogant, I’m smarter than everybody else, terrible game day manager.

Hey Andy, when you’re sitting on the couch in Feb, watching the super bowl with frito crumbs on the front of your shirt, try to remember that next season when you want to be cute, just don’t.

  188. 188 Anonymous said at 5:31 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Defense has allowed 6 TDs this year. 4 of them came on a short field. I think it is a bit early to go “Castillo blows”.

Defense does need to be more clutch and more consistent. Definitely a lot of work to be done.

  189. 189 Jon Blank said at 5:43 AM on September 19th, 2011:

the last 2 drives were 80 yards. With Vick hurt, the defense has to win that game for us. Instead it falls apart. I was against the Castillo promotion from the beginning, and I’ve seen little from him to change that stance. We’ll be lamenting this loss in December when we are scrambling for seeding or a wild card birth. Though with an injured Vick already and a Castillo run defense, we might not be scrambling for anything other than the Luck sweepstakes come December.

  190. 190 Anonymous said at 5:51 AM on September 19th, 2011:

The Luck sweepstakes? Dude, that’s asinine. Criticize the team all you want, but be realistic.

  191. 191 Jon Blank said at 5:57 AM on September 19th, 2011:

Any team not making the playoffs is scrambling in the Luck sweepstakes. The Eagles won’t be bad enough to get him without a trade, but Vick has taken way too much of a beating through 2 games and Castillo doesn’t get to face bad offenses who lose their best players after 1 play most weeks. As much talent as is on this roster, I have concerns about their ability to make the playoffs.

  192. 192 Anonymous said at 6:14 AM on September 19th, 2011:

BS. This isn’t the NBA. You need 1, 2, or 3 wins to be in Luck sweepstakes. Eagles aren’t that kind of a team, with or without Vick.

You think we might miss playoffs? Fine. I disagree, but that’s reasonable comment.

Feel free to be critical of the team, but just ranting and hating does no one any good. There’s plenty of issues to discuss in an intelligent way.

  193. 193 the guy said at 5:13 AM on September 19th, 2011:

I see a lot of anger here at the Eagles and Reid, but nobody gave them credit for the balanced approach to the game.

2 of the Falcons’ TDs were due to the defense, 2 were due to the offense, and one was due to special teams. Very fair.
