PHI at ATL – 2nd half
Posted: September 18th, 2011 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 194 Comments »Wild 1st half. Too many mistakes by Eagles. Should have led 13-7 or 17-7. Instead, huge goal line turnover leads to 14-10 deficit.
RED ZONE:
Atlanta 2 for 2
Eagles 1 for 3
That’s the big difference in the game.
Run defense looked bad early on. Turner had 2 carries for 23 yards. Since then he’s had 11 for 28. Looks like the LBs are moving up closer to the LOS. Hard to tell without studying the plays, so that’s just a guess for now.
We’ve outgained the Falcons 222-98. Clean up the mistakes and we’ll win.
Interesting stat…we’ve given up 3 TDs this season. All of the TD drives began in Eagles territory. Pin the offense deep and we seem to be okay.
* * * * *
Here we go.
That play will be much discussed, but it looks like if anyone missed an assignment it was DeVan. Kelce was supposed to be moving to the outside right after the snap. Happens.
Glad guys who looked hurt weren’t hurt.
Hopefully the Dirty Birds D will get very, very, tired… they are looking at my key chain, very very tired. They will be a little tired. Majestic birds need big plays. Then the running game gets going.
Steve Smith is on our team.
Atlanta is averaging 31 yards per scoring drive. That makes it a bit easier.
Well as Steve Martin once said, “Try and make a touchdown you scumbags!”
Also, Die you gravy sucking pigs!
This is great, having pass rushers and all!!!
Babin was getting held. Cole never gets those penalties either.
The good news is that we’re better than Atlanta, no matter what the final outcome.
7 quarters played. 8 sacks.
6 quarters and one series.
Vick is being way too careless with the football!
not enough exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much for Chaney being the answer to stopping TEs.
This is terrible. Field position is killing us.
Well, at least Matthews is getting plenty of experience chasing guys down from behind.
Tommy,
you’ll have to check the replay, but I think Page is being exposed a lot today.
Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.
Nice, strong second effort by McCoy to break that arm tackle
Way to get that back. FAST!
It must be scary to be a CB and see Peters coming at you
nice td by maclin good to see them respond like that
wow, jason peters getting out there for that. cb can be a lonely position when you see that coming
Defense needs to step it up.
This game is NOT on the defense at all so far.
I meant in the sense that the offense needs the ball back to get up on the Falcons and change the dynamic of the game.
Why can’t I like my own posts?! 🙂
Tommy has an anti-masturbation filter.
Great drive by the Eagles. That’s the way a good team responds to adversity.
finally a special teams play… and who else, but colt anderson!
Finally, big coverage play by Colt Anderson on that kickoff. ATL starts at the 14.
And the mandatory “that’s why we kept Colt”
Bad field position for the Falcons = pick for Asante!
that was a hell of an interception!
Samuel pic wow gettin the momentum back
Asante! What a catch!
Wow! Where have those hands been?!?!?!?!
Great play. I hope it holds up to challenge. Amazing hands on him.
Peters was an animal blocking for Maclin on that play!! Wow!!
I don’t see how you can change that.
Gonna have to rename that show “Turning Point(s).”
NIIIICE!
Hopefully Asante had to take a poop.
Give me a break with this super-microscopic view already!
desean back on the field
McCoy is unreal.
Agreed. Now SHUT UP. We don’t want your stink on him. Ha!
LOL I agree.
Way to bounce back!
Shady buys a round for Mac and Jack after that TD?
Way to storm back. Nice!
Not a good sign when Celek is getting flattened by a corner with probably 40 less LBs.
The Eagles are imposing their will on the Falcons now. This is beautiful.
I can’t believe how much McCoy has improved since his rookie year. He looks like an absolute stud out there. PLEASE PLEASE stay healthy.
Ditto.

Anyone else love how DeSean is playing?
Getting open in the end zone, making key blocks, chasing down interceptions. He’s earning that payday.
He’s turning into more of a complete WR. Kudos to him. Deserves a big check.
Impressed with the tackle after the fumble too. Not every guy would do that
Right now, DeSean is making the point that if they don’t pay him now, he’s going to force them to pay him even more later. I’m loving his attitude, especially because I don’t think you could fault him to much for being frustrated with his contract.

I’m lovin it
Man, I love this defense… nice run stop
What happened to our run D?
It got a heavy dose of awesome.
Was Matt Ryan influced my Donovan when he grew up in Philly? I felt like I was watching “happy feet” on that last play.
Everyone was expecting to love Coleman and ignoring Page.
Whoops. Other way around.
Peters is fun to watch in those replays
Dunta Robinson.. What a douche.
Throw him out of the game.
that was intentional
Throw that fucker out of the League… Go to Canada asshole!
Put Watkins in and let him murder that punk.
I want some Hockey style justice here. comon man
That’s just dirty, jerk
Lucky he braced himself.
That’s gotta be a suspension there, given that it’s a national Sunday night.
I need to see a replay, but it looks like they pulled some linemen robinson’s way on that call
Nice special teams play there
Times like this I wish the Eagles had signed Heinz Ward instead of Steve Smith…
I love that we kept all our corners.
Glad they didn’t get the safety now. LOL
Worst kick in the history of the NFL!!!
I guess karma is almost as good as street justice
How often can you start a drive in the red zone after a punt with no return?
Looks like the Dirty Birds are back.
I think it’s safe to say that Robinson is THE dirtiest of the dirty birds.
Wow, Kafka can really hand off good.
Big penalty.
I’m not sure if Vick knows he’s an Eagle or a VT Hokie right about now
They know they are handing off and they still walk it in.
Yeah, that was great. We needed to be physical and simple. Huge score.
We might see an Eagle’s record for rushing attempts tonight
Watching them, I’m not sure the Eagles even really need to use trickery on offense or defense.
Unfortunately, AR loves trickery (to make him seem smarter than the other guy).
Nice to see Henery put some through the endzone.
Cole is almost stopping their run game single handed
Cole is playing dominant on defense.
Guess the Eagles can stop this run game.
Matt Ryan must be Gumby, because something should have snapped on that take-down.
TRENT COLE
“How long are you gonna let one guy beat you?” –Chris Collinsworth re: Trent Cole.
Anyone else having Reggie White flashbacks watching Cole tonight?
Is AR making the lines calls on the ATL side as well (exposing that poor 1st rounder to T Cole without any help)?
anyone here the latest on vick’s injury…to me, it looked like he just bit his tongue pretty good.
It hasn’t really been bad coverage on Gonzales he’s just a beast
Anyone else notice that Vick went out, McCoy hurt his wrist, Maclin got jacked up (concussion?), and Asante hurt his hand?
Add J. Parker.
DJax was hurt too
This is a “body bag” game – the loser may well lose next week as well just due to the let-down.
This isn’t good with Kafka in. They’re going to have to pass to keep this lead.
Okay. This is going to be interesting. We’re at serious crunch time with a small lead and Kafka in at QB. Time for the OL and Shady to come up big.
And ronnie brown 😉 … oh and thanks for kicking thru the endzone so we didn’t have lewis try to run another one out.
Ronnie Brown wildcat upcoming?
Remember the Shrine game? We got this
Run the ball, screen pass, short dumps.
This has the makings of a nightmare game.
Maybe. Let’s see what the boys do here. We’ve got some pretty good players beside Vick.
Still looking like a nightmare game.
Maybe Kafka doesn’t hand it off so well.
It seems like some kind of cruel irony that Vick gets hurt staying in the pocket on a play that any QB could have been hurt on. And, when all the talking heads start saying this was inevitable when you play the way Vick does, it will confirm they don’t know what they’re talking about.
Wow, 4 passing TDs allowed. Championship defense!
They’re stopping the run excellently but giving up crucial 3rd down conversions. What’s wrong with this picture?
Also, Babin sucks. Why can’t they play Phillip Hunt at all?
Classic.
LMAO.
Too bad Heath Sherman isn’t here we could hand it off to him about 37 times.
For some reason I love that our safeties are 41 and 42
G-A-R-B-A-G-E defense once again, gentlemen!
It’s like Sean McDermott never left! Why throw money at all these free agents if you’re just going to give up a ton of points regardless?
I’ve missed you for the first 3 quarters
You didn’t expect her to be here when they were winning did you?
that was just ugly
This will be about as frustrating an early-season loss as we’ve seen in a long time. This might be worse than Week 2/2005 in NY.
I mean seriously, you spend all that money on defensive free agents but the mediocre Falcons put up 5 TDs on you? Wow. Why not just put a bunch of rookies on the field instead? It’d have the same net effect.
Finesse tackle on Michael Turner. Great idea.
@the guy
See what I meant?
About? I need context..
Well, chalk this one up to a “blown W”.
Let’s hope Vick’s neck is good to go next week.
Big test for Kafka, offense. We’ve got the weapons to move the ball without Vick. Guys must block, catch, and execute.
Seriously, even if they win, do you feel at all confident that they can win a playoff game against a good team if they cough up leads and give up easy-as-pie TDs at the drop of a hat?
MMMM Pie!!!!!
Not that I disagree with you, but didn’t you watch GB give up 400+ yards to Cam Newton? And all those yards were not in garbage time.
Who’s to say that Green Bay even has a good defense this year? These things vary from year to year.
But I know damn well that Green Bay didn’t give up more than 26 points once last year, and that was 31 points to the New England Patriots, which is alot more understandable than giving up 35 to the Falcons.
Yes
Thanks Morton – celebrating the ‘boys victory with Tony, are we???
What sucks is you need a TD. But more than likely Reid would kick a FG then hope the defense stops the Falcons.
I’m hoping this isn’t a typical Eagles game where they have a great drive to only come up short in the end.
Thinking back to the Robinson-Maclin play, it was dirty, but I’m not so sure it was intentionally. Robinson looked like he didn’t understand what was wrong immediately after.
Dropped it, unreal.
Just wasn’t meant to be.
We’re better than them. Next time, a 35-17 W.
Eagles are more talented. Clearly not better.
It’s absolutely ridiculous to put ANY blame on the offense.
If you score 31 points in the NFL, you absolutely should win
ESPECIALLY if you spent all offseason throwing money at defensive free agents. To come away giving up not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but FIVE touchdowns? Are you nuts? They could have kept Sean McDermott, kept Dimitri Patterson, kept Ernie Sims and they would have achieved the SAME result.
What about all the turnovers? That was on the defense as well?
How about making a stop in the red zone? Is that so hard to do?
Again, we could have kept the McDermott defense intact from last year if we wanted to see EZ MODE REDZONE TDs.

You’re asking her to think too much.
You’re asking her to think too much.

That’s idiotic. 3 of the 5 TDs came on drives less than 50 yards, 2 of them from turnovers.
That’s idiotic. 3 of the 5 TDs came on drives less than 50 yards, 2 of them from turnovers.
The point is, in the red zone, you could make a stop. Good defenses make stops in the red zones and hold teams to field goals.
Why does the defense still roll over in the red zone and allow EZ mode TDs?
Because the defense has a short field.
Until the 4th, I thought the D played well. Then they seemed to give up. You want to say they sucked in the 4th, fair enough. But 3 of the 5 TDs came from a short field, and only 1 TD went to a WR.
There is this thing called “Red Zone Defense”, which is defense played within, um, the Red Zone.
Good defenses will have a low TD% rate in the Red Zone. Bad defenses, such as, say, last year’s Eagles, will give up a high % of TDs within the red zone. This year’s Eagles seem little improved in that aspect.
You do realize that once the opposing team enters the red zone, a TD is not a foregone conclusion, nor should it be?
No, but if they’re generally starting from just outside the RZ it makes it a bit tougher to deal with.
Well men it was a tough night for all of us, except Morton of course as he’s most likely popping his grape champagne punch, but lots to improve on in a long season.
p.s. MACLIN HOW COULD U DROP THAT BALL AFTER THE NIGHT YOU HAD????!!!! (cue single tear drop rolling down my cheek)
Nightmare game.
Loss stolen from 10 point lead late. Lots of injuries to critical players. Offensive playcalling far too tricky for no real reason. Defense gave up in 4th quarter allowing 2 80yd TD drives.
Last week was an ugly win. This was an ugly loss that was handed away, with injuries as the icing.
Weird game… needed to abuse Ryan more. Barfff

Crappy finish and hate to fall to 1-1, but I’m still liking this team quite a bit. Must cover TEs better. Whatever Castillo had in mind didn’t work well tonight.

I’ve been saying that the O-Line was going to get Vick knocked out, but I never thought it would be our O-Line that actually knocked him out.
Agree. There is a lot to like about this team. Vick has to learn to read the blitz. That killed us and injured him. As good as this team is, we can only go as far as he takes us. We have to find a solution to the TE problem (try a bigger LB?) because Tony Gonzo basically just beat us by himself.
That stinks. The Eagles had the game.
With Vick, they were the better team. If it weren’t for a couple of turnovers, it wouldn’t have been close. Without Vick, the Falcons were the better team.
So here’s hoping Vick is OK.

Man… We blew it. Those turnovers killed us. We take the lead before the half and ATL wouldn’t have had a chance.

They went 5 for 5 in the red zone tonight. Ugh.
Biggest problem of the night. We had some guys in position, but the Falcons still got the job done. Ugh is right.
Vick has a concussion. Over/Under on Kafka starting ahead of Young next week?
The QB doesn’t matter if the defense can’t stop a high school team from scoring.
The defense will get better.
Why, did they fire Castillo already?
One day Tommy, one day we will have a linebacker who can cover TE’s. I just know I’ll see it in my lifetime…
Was anyone else really pissed we went to another WR screen on our last 3rd down there? I hated that play call, we’d already tapped that well twice, you think they might be sitting on something like that again? Plus Kafka was showing he knew what he was doing, give the kid a chance to run a regular passing play.
It’s hard to be pissed at a guy who went for 170 yards and 2 td’s, but somehow I’m managing to do it.
Does anyone think the current LB’s are the answer…c’mon – how on earth do you hand a rookie Casey Mathews the starting MLB – not that Chaney and Fokou distinguished themselves….the run defense is absolutely ridiculous…this is a joke! Morton is right – you put 31 on the board – you should win – with the talent on D – not looking good for the long haul!
And I cant say enough abt Reid not challenging that interception……….isn’t there anyone who cant advise the fat guy when to challenge and when not to…. absolutely frustrating
I can’t fault him for that, we didn’t even get a proper replay till 5 minutes later
Doesn’t matter. The play was close enough and important enough to challenge, especially when you still have both challenges left. But Andy is a terrible game day manager, so not surprising he blew it. I wonder if his Castillo failure will ultimately be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and costs him his job.
In hindsight it’s obvious Reid should have challenged that call. Yet I’m amazed at everyone’s anger at Andy Reid. Every official missed the call, no one in the booth saw it, yet fans are pissed that the man standing 60 feet away on the sideline blocked by all the players on the field didn’t get a clear view of the play? It makes more sense to be angry at the refs who blew the call in the first place.
Hearing and reading fans’ opinion and impressions from the game is depressing, I will go to sleep
Juan Castillo blows. Sorry. Just the way it is, 35 points, 5 tds on 5 red zone appearances, and a blown 10 point lead in the 4th quarter is unacceptable. In fact, its the same crap that got Mcdermott fired. We just traded in big pass plays for big run plays, and only because we threw money at the problem, not because Juan solved.
Fat Andy continued to be his usual, arrogant, I’m smarter than everybody else, terrible game day manager.
Hey Andy, when you’re sitting on the couch in Feb, watching the super bowl with frito crumbs on the front of your shirt, try to remember that next season when you want to be cute, just don’t.
Defense has allowed 6 TDs this year. 4 of them came on a short field. I think it is a bit early to go “Castillo blows”.
Defense does need to be more clutch and more consistent. Definitely a lot of work to be done.
the last 2 drives were 80 yards. With Vick hurt, the defense has to win that game for us. Instead it falls apart. I was against the Castillo promotion from the beginning, and I’ve seen little from him to change that stance. We’ll be lamenting this loss in December when we are scrambling for seeding or a wild card birth. Though with an injured Vick already and a Castillo run defense, we might not be scrambling for anything other than the Luck sweepstakes come December.
The Luck sweepstakes? Dude, that’s asinine. Criticize the team all you want, but be realistic.
Any team not making the playoffs is scrambling in the Luck sweepstakes. The Eagles won’t be bad enough to get him without a trade, but Vick has taken way too much of a beating through 2 games and Castillo doesn’t get to face bad offenses who lose their best players after 1 play most weeks. As much talent as is on this roster, I have concerns about their ability to make the playoffs.
BS. This isn’t the NBA. You need 1, 2, or 3 wins to be in Luck sweepstakes. Eagles aren’t that kind of a team, with or without Vick.
You think we might miss playoffs? Fine. I disagree, but that’s reasonable comment.
Feel free to be critical of the team, but just ranting and hating does no one any good. There’s plenty of issues to discuss in an intelligent way.
I see a lot of anger here at the Eagles and Reid, but nobody gave them credit for the balanced approach to the game.
2 of the Falcons’ TDs were due to the defense, 2 were due to the offense, and one was due to special teams. Very fair.
Sad, but true.
