Quick Roster Update

Posted: September 3rd, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 31 Comments »

The final cuts aren’t due til 6pm.  Goners, so far:

DT Derek Landri
DT Anthony Hargrove
OL Mike McGlynn
OL Austin Howard
TE Donald Lee
WR Chad Hall
WR Sinorice Moss

I’ll talk more about the Landri cut later.  Not a fan of it, but we need to see what the final plan is before we can fully understand things.

Key guys still on the bubble:

WR Johnnie Lee Higgins
OL Reggie Wells
DE Juqua Parker
DE Daniel Te’o-Nesheiem
DT Cedric Thornton
LB Akeem Jordan

Reports say the Eagles intend to keep Jamaal Jackson.  He’s not thrilled with that.  Jamaal wants to play.

We still have 7 CBs in place.  The team is shopping Joselio Hanson.  If the deal isn’t done in time,  they may keep him for a day or two while trying to finalize the situation.

CUTS OF INTEREST BY OTHER TEAMS

* LB Rennie Curran – TEN

* WR/RS Brandon Tate – NE

* S Brandon Meriweather – NE

Jacob Ford, DE from Titans was cut today. He obviously knows Washburn/Wide9 well. Why not pick him over Parker? (Cheaper, Younger, System Fit)

  2. 2 Thunderlips said at 4:40 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Any chance we’re trying to get some leverage for a Laws trade and Hargrove or Landri will be brought back afterword?

  3. 3 Sjampen said at 4:42 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Not Merriweather, that guys is a douchebag!

  4. 4 Tommy Lawlor said at 4:43 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Caplan says we just cut Joselio Hanson. Couldn’t work a deal, I guess.

  5. 5 Tommy Lawlor said at 4:43 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

    @ Thunderlips…

I think it’s possible we shop Laws and then re-sign one of the vets. Trevor has value.

  6. 6 fran35 said at 4:46 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Is anyone else utterly shocked that we cut Anthony Hargrove? I really thought he had played extremely well and earned a roster spot, at least. I thought he would see significant time. Wow.

  7. 7 Tommy Lawlor said at 4:48 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Jonathan Tamari reports that Colt Anderson has made the team. I sorta figured he would. Left him off the bubble list because of that.

  8. 8 ian no. 2 said at 4:52 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

    Happy about Colt.

Eagles have 9 more cuts to make, a figure that includes Marlin Jackson and Adams at S, 2 FBs counting Eldra, 7LBs, 11 DL.

Eagles have 9 OL + Harris and Tupou, who are hurt.

  9. 9 Pitmanite said at 5:01 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Tommy – You see Brandon Ghee was cut by the Bengals? I thought you liked him a lot coming out of the college. Was he hurt or just didn’t end up being a player?

  10. 10 Tommy Lawlor said at 5:04 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Ghee didn’t play all that well and did have some character issues. Not sure if the Eagles even had him on their draft board last year.

  11. 11 Dirk Diggler said at 5:08 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Shocked Landri & Hargrove were both cut. I thought they both played well in the preseason, consistently getting penetration in the backfield. Maybe there is somebody from anther team the Eagles are looking to pick up? A lot of good football players are getting cut today.

  12. 12 ian no. 2 said at 5:09 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

The Eagles cap guy says: “Hanson leaves 555K dead money this year (455K proration + 100K workout bonus) , 910K next year; Eagles save 1.88M in 2011 though.”

I didn’t think it was likely that some team would pony up over 2 million to trade for him this year. Cutting him means they have spots for their young CBs and apparently Hughes passed him.

  13. 13 Stephen said at 5:13 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

I was under the impression that we were fielding offers for Hanson. I’m surprised we couldn’t even get a 7th for a serviceable nickle corner? Color me surprised we didn’t get something value wise.

I never liked Merriweather and never understood what all the fuss was about with him. Imo he was pretty overrated in his time in NE, remember him getting beat several times in the super bowl game in ’07, even if that as a while ago. Dudes a turd too, so I anticipate we’ll bring him in for a look *rolls eyes*.

  14. 14 kyle said at 5:14 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

suprised both hargrove and landri were cut. i really liked both. esp. hargrove

  15. 15 eagleizeit said at 5:40 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Landri & Hargrove signed at the same time during camp. Maybe they cut their contracts so they can give them a longer term one both parties like? At worst I thought they were the 3rd & 5th best DT’s this summer. Maybe off field ?’s.

  16. 16 eagles nut said at 5:42 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Both Landri and Hargrove have small bonuses if they’re on the roster Week 1. Their salaries for the year are guaranteed if they’re on the roster for the first week of the season. So one of them could potentially come back after that.

  17. 17 ian no. 2 said at 5:43 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

I NEVER knew what Mmmbop meant. Just checked wikipedia. I didn’t watch MTV in the late 90s but was aware of the existence of Hanson.

  18. 18 Arby said at 5:46 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Spuds is suggesting that Landri or Hargrove could be back after week 1. If Laws does make the squad, I think we have to go back to what I said the other day: he’s younger, he made a breakthrough last year and has more upside/future years than the other guys. That said, I think one of the above will be back with the team.

  19. 19 Arby said at 5:53 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

And if Cedric Thorton somehow makes the team, it’s a further emphasis on how the team values upside, per Adam Scheffer.

  20. 20 Tommy Lawlor said at 5:54 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Reuben Frank just reported that Phillip Hunt and DTN both got cut. Wow.

  21. 21 ATG said at 5:59 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Could the idea with Landri and Hargrove be to bring one back with a non-guaranteed salary so that it is easier to make room for Graham to return mid-year?

    @Ian

Researching Hanson’s nickname now is a bit like closing the barn door after the cows got out, returned, lived a happy life, were butchered, and eaten for dinner.

  22. 22 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:01 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Adam Caplan now says Hunt might not have been cut. Agent hasn’t heard final word from Eagles.

  23. 23 Baloophi said at 6:04 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Hunt not on Eagles official cut list.

  24. 24 brza said at 6:05 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

What?! Hunt AND Teo? They cut Hargrove, Landri, Hunt and Teo but they keep Colt Anderson in a year when Kickoff returns have all but been eliminated?
I can’t believe that they will start the season with only 4 healthy DEs especially in Washburn’s system.

Also, why hasn’t Marlin Jackson been cut yet?

  25. 25 Baloophi said at 6:06 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

    Per Spuds…

    Hanson
    Hall
    Moss
    Lee
    McGlynn
    Howard
    Hargrove
    Teo
    Higgins
    Jackson
    Reggie Wells
    Adams
    Landri
    Buckley
    Lloyd
    Tupou
    Acuna
    Ryan Harris

    Winston Justice activated
    Graham PUP

  26. 26 brza said at 6:07 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Nevermind. Marlin Jackson is cut now. But Hunt is NOT on the list of releases according to Eagles Insiders Twitter page. Thats good news. Hunt really earned his spot this summer.

  27. 27 Dan said at 6:09 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Justice being activated is a surprise, but a pleasant one, I’d think.

  28. 28 Arby said at 6:12 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

So glad Hunt made it over Teo.
    Thorton the gigantic surprise..

  29. 29 ian no. 2 said at 6:13 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

“brza is saying What? Tommy is saying Wow, Caplan is shocked, get Hunt back on the phone”

5 WRs, maybe Smith is close to ready, but supposedly they’re trading for a KR like Tate. 6 LBs made it.

23 offensive players.. Castillo got his guys on draft day and on cut day.

  30. 30 eagles nut said at 6:19 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

The Eagles typically go heavy on defense on the 53-man roster and then heavy on offensive players on the PS. You’ll probably see a 6-2 split offense-defense on the PS.

  31. 31 eagleizeit said at 6:26 PM on September 3rd, 2011:

Just like in the draft they knew who they wanted & took them no matter who’s available. Maybe Wash likes Big Al & they have a basic understanding with Pat’s to make a deal? They’ve dealt with them in the past.
