Game Thread – 2nd Half SF at PHI

20-3, good guys, at the half.

293-153 in yardage.

My son LB  Brian Rolle is making the family proud.  Simply put, he looks like he belongs.

Mike Vick is slightly better than Mike Kafka.  Vick is a bit erratic, but has made some great plays and looked good overall.

Ronnie Brown is inches away from getting shipped to Siberia.  He better have a clean 2nd half.

Jason Babin doesn’t suck.  I remember Jeff McLane going on an on about how the Eagles needed to go get Ray Edwards.  Uh, no.  Babin was our DE target and I think you see why.  He and Jim Washburn go together like Megan Fox and bikinis.  Okay, that might be a strange point of comparison.  How about french fries and ketchup?

Our Red Zone offense is … less than awesome. Unless you’re a fan of the opposing team.

Let’s go finish this game strong.

I expected WAS to dominate the Rams, and I expect the Giants to beat the Cards, but I’m really disappointed in the Lions right now.

    Nevermind.

Though it’s not like it matters.

To your point Tommy. Charge that one to Vick’s mouth.

They ran the same play and got the same tripping call?

  5. 5 Anonymous said at 7:00 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I liked Harbaugh’s reaction yelling “Tripping?” into his headphone. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen it called twice in a game.

  6. 6 ike said at 6:59 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Brian Rolle is clearly an upgrade from Matthews (would have loved for both to be playing).

But if we had Bowman and Sean Lee . . . much better

  7. 7 Mac said at 7:42 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

What if we had Bowman and Rolle?

  8. 8 Septhinox said at 7:01 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

How is that they look like a totally different defense after the 1st quarter of this game?

  9. 9 Anonymous said at 7:06 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

They have looked pretty good in the 2nd and 3rd Q of each game. It is the start and end that have been trouble.

  10. 10 ike said at 7:02 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Chance to end this game right now.

Clearly, getting D-Jax involved is a big part of the game plan.

The KING . . . athletic as hell.

  11. 11 Anonymous said at 7:02 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Is our Oline, specifically the tackles, backpedaling more like they have in past years?

  12. 12 Anonymous said at 7:07 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Haven’t noticed that. I’ll watch for it.

  13. 13 ike said at 7:04 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

The 49ers have blitzed 6-7 on 3rd-and-9 or less almost every time.

WHY aren’t the Eagles ready for that?

  14. 14 Anonymous said at 7:07 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

On a positive note, Alex Henry is my fantasy kicker…

  15. 15 Anonymous said at 7:07 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

STs MVP for today…Alex Henery or King Dunlap?

  16. 16 ike said at 7:07 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

    Question for Morton . . .

Was the Eagles’ selection of Alex Henry right on the money . . . or what!!!

  17. 17 Anonymous said at 7:12 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I’d like to see him connect on a few more 40+ yard field goals before I celebrate the pick, but you can’t argue he has done a great job with the opportunities he has been given.

  18. 18 Anonymous said at 7:08 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I like Megan Fox and bikinis, I can live with that comparison

Does Dunlap nomally normally on the FG defend thing?

  19. 19 Anonymous said at 7:13 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I’m not sure. Gotta go back and check that out.

  20. 20 Nathan said at 7:14 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

  21. 21 Mac said at 7:08 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I know this isn’t the time/place for this comment, but this is something that has been bugging me for a few months and I keep forgetting to bring it up. I realize that not many players “crosstrain” at another position (cough, dan kleco) BUT…

Tommy, can you explain why King Dunlap hasn’t been tried at DT? With his height and athleticism… our shortage at DE could be helped if he could play some snaps in there and slide Jenkins outside… Plus can you imagine a 6’9″ guy taking away passing lanes? I can.

  22. 22 Anonymous said at 7:14 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Leverage is important inside, Dunlap doesn’t have it.

  23. 23 Mac said at 7:22 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

    Makes sense. thanks

  24. 24 Anonymous said at 7:09 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

    Yes

  35. 35 ike said at 7:13 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

  36. 36 Jon Blank said at 7:27 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Is this the disaster you were looking for?

  37. 37 Michael said at 7:15 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

  38. 38 Anonymous said at 7:17 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Let’s not go overboard here, he’s always been like that and there has been some plays where he got physical

  39. 39 Anonymous said at 7:21 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

In terms of tackling, Asante has had one of his strongest years (which I realize is not saying much). I’m not sure he has been beat in coverage all that much either. I’ve seen way more plays made on nnamdi than on asante

Here comes the 2nd half defensive collapse again.

  45. 45 the guy said at 7:23 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

This is starting to feel familiar.

Offense underachieving and turning the ball over. Bizarre playcalling. Bad tackling and lots of mental mistakes by players. And the defense breaking down when trying to hold a lead.

  46. 46 Zachary said at 7:24 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Red Zone again, lets see something.

  47. 47 Zachary said at 7:25 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Alright I’ve seen enough – fire Juan.

  48. 48 Jon Blank said at 7:26 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

  49. 49 Anonymous said at 7:26 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

You never should have written that clutch/closer article Tommy! haha

  50. 50 Zachary said at 7:26 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Someone better fucking tell Andy Reid and his coaches that football has 4 quarters. They don’t seem to know this.

  51. 51 Anonymous said at 7:26 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Going into the season, we talked about our defense being designed to protect a lead. So far, it seems we are at our worst on d with the lead and at our best when playing from behind. I don’t get it.

  52. 52 Anonymous said at 7:27 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

One stop just one in the RZ would be nice this half

  53. 53 marc said at 7:27 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Jarrad Page needs to learn how to use 2 arms to tackle.

All he does is try to drill people with his shoulder. WRAP UP!

  54. 54 Anonymous said at 7:27 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

oh goody another late game collapse, I can hardly wait.

It is time for this team to “man up.” In a serious way.

  55. 55 Zachary said at 7:29 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I think I can say with full confidence that this isn’t the team we thought it was.

  56. 56 Eric Weaver said at 7:29 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

What’s lost in this whole defensive collapse memes is that the offense has collapsed too in the second half.

  57. 57 Michael said at 7:31 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I think we’ve got to stop kidding ourselves that this is anything close to a SB contending team. The Off is too inconsistent and relies on busted plays. The D sucks as anything besides rushing the Qb.

At least our rookie K seems to be the real deal…

  58. 58 Anonymous said at 7:31 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Those last 4 steps to get to the ball were just a gear other players don’t have.

  59. 59 Zachary said at 7:31 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

There isn’t anyone better on this team than Kyle Devan?

  60. 60 Anonymous said at 7:32 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

    We should draft a RT.

  61. 61 Anonymous said at 7:33 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

And can we get Page off the field!!

    #sorryverybittertableforone

  62. 62 the guy said at 7:37 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

But you’re fine with the performance of the offense? I’m not.

  63. 63 Anonymous said at 7:44 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

No I’m not happy, but for my health’s sake I can only afford to let one side of the ball send me into a rage.

  64. 64 Anonymous said at 7:34 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

  66. 66 Anonymous said at 7:35 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I know SF has good LBs, but we really gave up on the run, even by our standards.

  67. 67 Mac said at 7:37 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Andy is trying to make a point to remind people that he balances his pass/run philosophy across the whole season.

  68. 68 Anonymous said at 7:38 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I think Reid hoped to build a good lead and run in the 4th. Great plan…until the 3rd Q happened.

  69. 69 Anonymous said at 7:35 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

    We’re ahead, let’s go Eagles!!!!

  70. 70 Zachary said at 7:36 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Well if we lose this game, I’m going on record – it destroys the other two in terms of epic collapse. We could kid ourselves with the Giants & Falcons that they have decent talent. But letting a team of Josh Morgan’s and Kendall Hunter’s tear you up, that’s another thing….not to mention the obvious different levels at QB.

  80. 80 marc said at 7:48 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

    Tommy:

In your review, take a look at how much more often during this game — at least it seems — that the Eagles’ D-line lined up much tighter.

    Especially when P-Hunt was in.

  81. 81 marc said at 7:49 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Will the Eagles run the ball again today?

    Or just go All Andy?

  115. 115 the guy said at 8:18 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I agree, the D is terrible. But again, with the lineup at LB and S, and a first year D coordinator, I expected it. I didn’t expect it to be THIS bad, but I expected bad.

    No excuses for the offense.

only fitting, these guys haven’t been securing the ball all game long. well folks, it was nice knowing you.

make sure we keep calling for juan’s job even though almost 50% of the defense is made up of 7th round picks and guys don’t know how to tackle (that of course is juan’s fault).

  123. 123 Zachary said at 8:23 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I think they should fire everyone. I asked Tommy mutliple times if he felt it was smart to go into a seaosn with all this youth. That said – onet hing they could change – is the coaches. Not like they can go out and bring back Quentin or Stewart now.

You want to blame a rookie kicker? Or the LB’s they continue to shuffle around because they ignored the spot? or the safeties when they let a team leader walk?

I can only half way agree. Can we not ask the offense to score ANYTHING in the second half?

Our problems can’t be pinned on one person which means changes aren’t going to come quickly.

We have a general lack of talent at both the LB and Safety positions, a rookie Defensive coordinator who is not putting his guys in good spots. An offensive line that is doing pretty well blocking for Vick, but can’t push forward half a yard when they need it. A rookie kicker that just can’t be trusted yet.

I just don’t see how firing Juan makes the team any better. We’re just a mediocre team with some big names.

  130. 130 Morton said at 8:24 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

There is only one solution to this problem now.

The entire organization must be purged from the top down. Lurie must fire Reid and all of his position coaches. Castillo must go. Howie Roseman definitely must go. The octagenerians running the defensive and offensive lines must go.

Reid’s regime has run his course. This team needs a fresh start with a new, up-and-coming coach.

  131. 131 Anonymous said at 9:24 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Sorry, but the solution here is to go back to fundamentals and just out hustle everyone.

It’s funny how we love out hustling people on defense but have to outsmart them on offense.

    WOW!!!

How bad will this season be?

The Eagles geared up on defense for passing offenses . . . but they don’t really have many on the schedule.

They geared up for getting big leads and defending them w/ the Wide-9 rush.

    But they’ve blown them.

And you can’t blame the kid kicker. And if Reid says anything about the “6 points would have helped,” he’s a jack-ass.

This team reminds me of the 2003 Oakland Raiders. SB to last place.

PS – Danny Watkins . . . go back to Canada.

And take Mudd and Castillo . . . and Reid and Roseman with you.

    BLOW UP THE FRONT OFFICE

Silver lining for this game… There are a lot of free items on craigslist in the Philly region. Not sure if any of them are better than the effort by the defense or offense in the red zone over the last 20 games.

  137. 137 Morton said at 8:27 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Howie Roseman should be first on your list of people to blame.

As the GM he is responsible for the past 2 drafts, and for the free agent signings. He is the reason that they passed on Sean Lee AND Navarro Bowman in the draft. He, and Andy Reid, is the reason the Eagles have garbage at the LB position

Cole and Peters are hurt today, hopefully not too seriously. The defense can’t stop anybody. The offense can’t score in the redzone. There are some major things we need to fix.

  144. 144 Anonymous said at 8:36 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Yeah, that was me. I was saying that the 2005 team was the one I felt was the most talented, and had the most excitement about. I’ve always felt like this was going to be an 8-8 team, but I know a lot of fans felt very, very confident about this roster. So in that way, its the same.

  145. 145 Jim Larsen said at 9:04 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

It was hard not to get excited when the big names poured in. The thought of Vince Young and Ronnie Brown as backups should be exciting. But with that, we (I mean some of us) pretended that the huge amount of inexperience would only realize the upside. That was probably naive. We’re a team of big names and inexperience with nothing in between. That’s not going to work…and clearly isn’t working

  157. 157 Anonymous said at 8:48 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

I don’t think Andy has forgotten how to coach. This is crazy though. If Andy were to be fired, he’d have half a dozen teams pursuing him in the offseason. If Juan were fired, would any team call him to be anything other than an O-Line coach? Would any college team want him as their DC? A high school team?

Guy is in over his head. Has been from the start.

  158. 158 Nathan said at 9:13 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Absolutely disgusted by this team. 21 answered points to the Niners? Are you kidding me?

I have infinitely more scorn for whatever the hell Ronnie Brown thought he was doing on the goal line than I do Alex Henery.

Just can’t believe we gave up 3 2nd half TDs to Tiny Hands. The Niners are not a “good” team. They aren’t even mediocre.

Gonna be embarrassing when we lose to Kolb / Fitz and Beanie Wells has a 120 yard day in the Linc.

  161. 161 Anonymous said at 8:47 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

Agree. That little weasel Bo Wulf tried to pin it on the kicker after Andy’s “comments,” but the real culprit is the Wildcat. WTF was that? Assuming Henery doesn’t blow a 20 yard field goal (big assumption), then even choking away 21 points or whatever it was in the 4th wouldn’t have mattered.

    TOMMY –

Brian Rolle wasn’t the answer. And, frankly, what exactly did he do that makes him better the Matthews?

We’re reaping the harvest of 2 very bad drafts by Reid and Roseman. And some bad trades.

And just an awful off-season plan.

Did Reid not know that a lock-out was coming . . . and so his team of newbees would have no opportunity to work together until T.C.?

We’re seeing how HUGE a piece Jimmy Johnson was to this team.

And, dare I say, Donovan McNabb wasn’t so bad either — but I’m not asking to have him back (though he’s gotta be laughing when he’s not crying).

    *************

And to anyone who thinks this team wouldn’t be better off with Rob Ryan — then you know NOTHING about football.

Reid just completely blew it. Completely.

He put Castillo in a terrible position. Just because your kids ask to smoke dope, you don’t say “oh, you’ve taken antibiotics, sure go ahead.”

And Howard Mudd? I don’t know. Just not enough time . . . especially with a BLOWN 1st ROUND PICK. And draft after draft of bad O-line selections.

But really this comes down to BAD DRAFTING.

Navarro Bowman made some nice plays today. ROSEMAN wanted T’eo Nashim over him.

Sean Lee’s played well. And apparently, whoever the doctors are in Dallas, they’re a lot smarter than in Philadelphia. We got 5 picks and none of them are making much of a difference. Granted, Stew Bradley was expected to come back . . . but he didn’t. Of course, the idea of having depth was not in the plan.

    ***************

Years ago, Reid talked about building his teams from the inside out — from the O-line out and the D-line out.

The core of this team — from the “inside out” is terrible. Flat out terrible.

    ****************

Teams must be licking their chops now at playing the Eagles. Pound the ball. Double Babin. And, voila, you’ll win the game.

    ****************

Tough, tough day for the Rookie Kicker.

But the problems run way too deep to dump on the kid.

So, is it time to panic?

I asked last week if you’d give us your top 5 factors for when panic-time arrived?

    How ’bout:

    1. 3 straight blown 4th Q lead.

    2. 3 straight games w/ no 4th Q offense

    3. 3 straight games of playing like the ’98 Eagles in redzone.

    4. 3 straight games of the defense being OUT COACHED on BOTH sides of the ball in the 4th quarter.

    5. Jim Johnson, God rest his soul, is not coming back

  169. 169 Anonymous said at 8:48 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

In all seriousness, if we lose the next two (which seems very probable), do you blow things up and go for the #1 pick? I mean, 1-5 even in a crappy conference won’t get it done…

  170. 170 Anonymous said at 8:50 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

No. You can’t “blow it up”. It’s not the NHL/MLB where you can play prospects. That said, I would definitely not play Graham and I’d consider benching Asante for DRC/Marsh.

  171. 171 Anonymous said at 8:56 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

  176. 176 Morton said at 8:51 PM on October 2nd, 2011:

The three most important things a head coach needs to do to be successful in the NFL is:

    – Acquire your franchise QB.
    – Hire a great General Manager.
    – Hire a great Defensive Coordinator.

Andy had nailed down all three of these points from 1999-2008. No longer.

If you don’t have a competent GM, you draft poorly. In the NFL, you draft well or die.

If you don’t have a competent DC, all the talent in the world on defense doesn’t matter because the DC can’t motivate them and can’t scheme to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.
