Sunday is Funday

Right?

It will be if you fans do your part.  Me and Jarrad Page can’t be expected to do everything by ourselves.

I used to love Sundays because it meant getting to watch the Eagles play and then also taking in other NFL games.  This year there hasn’t been quite so much fun.  I’m going to clear my head (as best I can) and try to enjoy today.  Football is supposed to be fun, right?

Be happy.

That’s an order.

New column is up with some thoughts on today’s game.

I’ve been negligent for a couple of days.  Here is a link to some random sunglasses info.  My apologies for not getting this out sooner.

    This.

I have not enjoyed the NFL season so far. Hopefully this will change today!!

    Go Eagles!!!

Every loss brings us one step closer to seeing Andy Reid shoved out the door and Jeff Lurie forced to hire a new coach.

    Go Redskins.

I’d rather see a tank roll over you than see the Eagles lose to the Redskins.

    Go tank.

Throw in Tank Williams and Tank Johnson for good measure.

I don’t have many positive vibes left for this game. Seems like the strengths of the ‘Skins matches up perfectly with our weaknesses. Good running game + a playmaking TE = the Defense falling all over itself.

There’s still the question of the tackles being healthy enough to play and with Orakpo and Kerrigan coming off the edges, that could pose a HUGE problem. Could be an incredibly looong game.

Also, Reid is 5-7 going into the bye. Here’s hoping they turn it around and make me look stupid.

Explain to me, Eagles fans, why you want to see them win this game, or any game left in this season for that matter?

It’s almost impossible to get into the playoffs (let alone win the Super Bowl) after going 1-4, and with this porous defense and turnover-prone offense, the best this team can achieve is likely 7-9 or 8-8, in the absolute best-case scenario.

What does that accomplish other than prolong the agony of the current inept regime and lower the 2012 first round draft pick? Wouldn’t you rather see the team end up as a 3-13 or 4-12 team, be assured of a regime change, and also be assured of a top-10 draft pick?

The only way this team will ever be a contender again is if they begin to draft well, and change their defensive and offensive philosophies. This will only happen if Andy Reid moves on from his position as Head Coach and Head of Personnel, and hopefully takes Howie Roseman with him.

The answer lies in your question. I want the Eagles to win this game because I am an Eagles fan. Nuff said!

  9. 9 Morton said at 11:55 AM on October 16th, 2011:

If you’re a fan of the Eagles, wouldn’t you rather see them win a Super Bowl sometime in the next 5 years than flounder with the current regime for this year, and then continue to flounder with this regime in the next 5 years because Lurie was afraid to fire Reid after a 7-9 or 8-8 season gave him a sliver of hope when a 3-13 or 4-12 season would have instead forced him to clean house?

Losing now = chance at Super Bowl later. Winning now = Stagnancy and complacency reign

This team is talented enough to win a Super Bowl. If we go on a November/December run, we’re favorites to make the playoffs (because it will mean we went 9-2). If we’re 1-5 after today, we’re going to spiral and finish 4-12/5-11.

    We’re in a good spot.

I am not sure why I am responding, but your fourth and fifth word answer your own question.

You may find this hard to believe, but most fans want their team to win. Granted, there are downsides. There is usually less to complain about after a win. It is harder to find sympathizers for the fire-everyone-burn-down-the-stadium-salt-the-ground, Carthaginian Peace method of teambuilding. Misery has less of the company it loves.

On the other hand, you get to see the team win. Again, you may have trouble with this, but for most fans this is the outcome that they hope for all offseason and every week. If the Eagles were 1-14, I would be rooting for them to win.

From time to time I defend you in the comments section as an honest fan with a cynical and pessimistic view. Maybe I was wrong.

You said during the offseason, “Screw this team completely. I’m done with the bum Eagles.” I don’t know if you are practicing emotional hedging, seeking the attention you knew your comments would receive, or are a sadist, but with a comment ending in “Go Redskins,” I am beginning to wish you would keep your word.

  12. 12 Morton said at 12:36 PM on October 16th, 2011:

I want this team to win a Super Bowl. Period.

Isn’t that what every fan wants?

I am a realist, however, and understand that with the current regime, the current head coach and his current philosophy, and their current ineptness in the drafting process, that this team cannot win the Super Bowl at any point in the future.

It will take a commitment to better talent evaluation, smarter drafting, and fundamental philosophical changes in their roster-building and game-planning to develop a serious Super Bowl contender.

Thus, unless Reid and/or Roseman are gone, this team will never be a Super Bowl contender. I want to see them win a Super Bowl – thus, I root for Reid and Roseman to be forced out. Losing now speeds that process along and paves the way for a new regime who actually gives us a chance to win a Super Bowl at some point in the next 5 years.
