PHI 24, MIA 7 – 2nd Half

Posted: December 11th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 114 Comments »

That was fun.

Thing started slow…very slow.  The coaches adjusted the offense.  They took Vick out of the shotgun spread and mixed in more plays from under Center.  They also mixed in some good short throws, several to Celek.  Vick got into a rhythm and the Eagles came alive.

Kurt Coleman had an INT that set up a TD.

Shady McCoy ran for 2 scores.

Jason Babin has 2 sacks and the defense has allowed only 82 yards.  Clay Matthews and Brian Rolle each had their first sack of the season (and their careers).

The one area of weakness is STs.  Blocked punt set up Miami’s only score.  Fumble on trick play PR put us in bad position, but Babin got the ball back for the offense.

This sudden creeping feeling of optimism is unwanted. I need the team to squander this game so I can go back to thinking about the draft and not allow myself to think of nigh impossible playoff scenarios.

Actually, I really do hope they cruise to a big win. I just don’t have it in me to root for a loss.

Those two ST mistakes were big.

Other ST’s have been good. Punts, coverage, KO’s, and the 40 yd FG were all nice to see.

On a side note….I want Henery to show me he can kick a 50 plus yard FG

  13. 13 Anonymous said at 3:16 PM on December 11th, 2011:

So far this season, Henery has 3 attempts of 40 or longer, one of which being the 60-some yard FG at the end of a half early in the season and no other 50+ yard attempt. Part of that is probably the offense not getting stopped in that range often, but AR has gone for it on 4th down a few times in that range (something I support actually). I am curious if part of the reason is that AR doesn’t fully trust Henery, or maybe more accurately, AR trusted Akers more on those 50+ yard kicks and Henery simply hasn’t earned that respect yet, because he does seem to have that kind of leg.

If we can only take the lead into the fourth quarter . . .

I really can’t get behind rooting for draft position. I have a coworker who is a Colts fan and he’s thrilled with the prospect of drafting Luck. I think that attitude is pathetic and bad karma. Carrying a losing culture into the next season would, I believe, offset any gains from a better draft position. Just win, Birds.

  15. 15 Anonymous said at 3:13 PM on December 11th, 2011:

Terrible decision by Mike. Gotta be smart. Go to 3rd down. No reason for risky throw.

  16. 16 Anonymous said at 3:14 PM on December 11th, 2011:

    I like Vick. Really.

But he’s not the future of this franchise.

If the Eagles want either RGIII or Barkley — assuming those guys declare for the draft — the Birds will have to pay a pretty ransom to beat out Washington and Miami.

Would it be worth it? Absolutely.

Howie’s volume theory’s not what we need.

  65. 65 Corry Henry said at 4:05 PM on December 11th, 2011:

We all complain about the Defense and their 4th quarter melt downs, but the offense seems to get out-adjusted during the half in a lot of these games.

  66. 66 Anonymous said at 4:12 PM on December 11th, 2011:

Fully agree, but I don’t think that gives the defense a pass on the season. The offense has really struggled in a lot of these 4th quarter losses throughout the season. If they had gotten some points in a bunch of those losses, we likely come out with a win in those games, but regardless, when you have a 4th quarter lead going into the 4th, you have to look at the defense when you come out with a loss in those games, especially considering a few of them were 10 point leads going into the 4th.

  67. 67 Corry Henry said at 4:15 PM on December 11th, 2011:

Oh certainly. The defense MUST protect the lead. Definitely not giving the D a pass, but offense is a bit of a concern as well.

NO WAY the Eagles lose now to Buffalo.

Or San Fran (and the Birds shouldn’t have lost the first time).

What’s mind numbing is how the Eagles lost to the Cards — injury or no injury to Vick

And isn’t just the Eagles’ luck this year that they get Cutler against CHI, not Hannie.
    ________________

Speaking about Marty and the offense, this Sunday — while nice — was another example of the offense doing SQUAT in the 2nd half.

I can’t wait to read AR’s comments that the Eagles’ weren’t trying to score because the “D” was playing so well.
