Ugh.

Alice Cooper said it best, “Welcome to my nightmare.”

Congrats to the Giants for being good enough to win the Super Bowl, but are they the weakest SB champ in recent memory?  Of all time?  This just sucks.

Sorry for the lack of quality insight.  I’m a pretty miserable person right now.

I can’t wait til the 2011 nightmare is a distant memory.

Coming into the game, I didnt think the giants winning would piss me off as much as it turns out it does. I am reminded of a quote from boardwalk where nucky doesn’t know how he feels on a decision, and is given the advice, “flip a coin, when its in the air, you will know which side you want it to land on”. For me the flip was when I turned the game on late, and as soon as I saw the giants up I KNEW that if they won, it would make me absolutely miserable. DAMN.

    The NFL is fixed.

How can it be that a team that was outscored in the regular season go on to win the Super Bowl?

No team that was outscored in the regular season has ever even *played* in the Super Bowl before this, let alone win it.

95% of Super Bowl participants in the past 45 years have had a regular season point differential of +50 or more, and 77% have had a regular season point differential of +100 or more.

Of course, the Giants buck the trend not once (2007, they just barely had a positive point differnetial) but TWICE. This can’t possibly be anything but fixed for the Maras and the Tischs.

I refuse to watch or support a product that is clearly rigged or fixed in any way. Goodbye, NFL. I’ll show up once to see what idiotic mistakes Howie Roseman & co. make on draft day, but after that, I will no longer watch, read, or listen to any NFL-related product.

  15. 15 the guy said at 10:23 PM on February 5th, 2012:

Oh my god. I agree with Morton.

    Does the nightmare *ever* end?

  16. 16 Morton said at 10:26 PM on February 5th, 2012:

I mean, this is the same Giants team that was completely SHUT DOWN by Juan Castillo’s defense in the regular season.

That same Juan Castillo defense was bent over a barrel and sodomized by Tom Brady in the same regular season.

Why watch the NFL regular season if it’s completely meaningless? Prior to 2007, the regular season actually mattered – if you weren’t a dominant team in the regular season, there was no chance whatsoever that you’d even BE on the field on Super Bowl Sunday. But in the past six years, we’ve seen dreck like the 2007 Giants, the 2008 Cardinals, and now the 2011 Giants play in and even win the Super Bowl. Clearly the game no longer rewards regular season performance. So why bother watching the regular season at all?

Fuck you, NFL and your concept of “parity”.

  17. 17 Andrew W. Cohen said at 7:27 AM on February 6th, 2012:

Yeah, they’ve turned the NFL into the NHL.

Anyone else notice that even before last night, three of the four greatest upsets in SB history involve NY teams?

And now the Giants win the SB with a team that was outscored during the regular season. And it just so happens in the year after a reputation-damaging lockout. Fishy.

  18. 18 Eric Weaver said at 8:35 AM on February 6th, 2012:

And the Patriots, i.e. America, won the Super Bowl after 9/11.

  19. 19 Andrew W. Cohen said at 8:57 AM on February 6th, 2012:

For those who question how the NFL could do this, I answer: just stop testing the Giants for steroids. How else can we explain Victor Cruz?

And remember: the NFL is the league with the _greatest_ incentives to cheat for certain teams because the combination of a national TV deal, revenue sharing, and salary cap deny NYC the financial advantages it has in other sports.

Of course, I could be full of crap.

  28. 28 Anonymous said at 10:24 PM on February 5th, 2012:

I think what makes it even worse is that the Giants showed all you have to do is to be playing well at the right time and I think if the Eagles could have snuck into the playoffs they would have had jus as good a shot as anybody to win it as well as they were playing. Hopefully this serves as extra motivation for next year,

  33. 33 Morton said at 10:42 PM on February 5th, 2012:

And what’s the point of even caring about the Eagles winning the Super Bowl anymore?

You see the Giants get there twice and win it easily – Tom Coughlin wins it TWICE since he joined the team eight years ago. And in fourteen years, Andy Reid has only even sniffed the game once. How can you possibly even care about Reid and the Eagles winning a Super Bowl at this rate, when an inferior division rival (beaten 7 out of last 8 times by the Eagles) does it so easily while you struggle and fail?

It’s like watching your dorky brother hit on the every hot chick in school and get them into bed with ease while you struggle to even get a date, despite being better looking and smarter than your brother.

Oh, and how can Jeffrey Lurie really tell himself that keeping Andy Reid in power is the right thing to do? After fourteen years, if you can’t get the job done, why do you still have a job? Jim Fassel got the Giants to the Super Bowl in 2000 but lost the game. They fired him less than four years later and hired Tom Coughlin. Do you think the Giants would have won these past two Super Bowls if they had held onto Fassel like the Eagles have held onto Reid?

  34. 34 Anonymous said at 10:52 PM on February 5th, 2012:

    So we should hire Coughlin?

  35. 35 Morton said at 12:07 AM on February 6th, 2012:

The Eagles should fire Reid and hire someone who can actually win the game that matters.

    The Coughlin to Reid’s Fewell.

And they need to quit rewarding mediocrity. I mean, 14 years without a Super Bowl win. Why does Jeffrey Lurie accept mediocrity? If a coach can’t get it done in 6 years, then he never will. Bill Cowher is an extreme anomaly that shouldn’t be used as a measuring stick for coaching competence. The vast majority of Super Bowl winning coaches win their first Super Bowl within 6 years of coaching a team.

  36. 36 Anonymous said at 12:25 AM on February 6th, 2012:

Relax. If Reid doesn’t have a really good year in 2012, you’ll get your wish. If he does have a really good year, you can bite the bullet and enjoy the success.

  37. 37 Morton said at 12:56 AM on February 6th, 2012:

The problem is that if he has a year in which, say, he gets to the NFC Championship game but loses, then I can all too easily see Jeffrey Lurie being suckered into sticking with Reid.

I believe that anything short of a Super Bowl victory in 2012 at this point must get Reid axed.

Anything else would be to tolerate mediocrity and incompetence. No – losing an NFCCG is simply not success by any stretch of the imagination when your division rival has just won its second Super Bowl in 5 years.

Define “really good year”. Because if your definition doesn’t involve a Super Bowl *victory*, well then, there is no hope for the Eagles, ever, if that means that Reid has an opportunity to remain as coach without a Lombardi trophy coming to Philly in 2012.

  38. 38 Anonymous said at 8:28 AM on February 6th, 2012:

100% right. It’s getting a little tiresome listening to the Reid defenders move the goalposts to a “really good year.” 14 years ago, if Eagles fans were told that they’d have a 14 year stretch with more good years than bad, and a few “really good” years, but no rings, who on earth would tolerate that?

Since Eli the Giants have been significantly more successful than the Eagles. I’m sorry, I don’t want to think of Eli as Elite, I don’t want to think of the Giants as a good football team, but 2 Super Bowl wins is a very good argument….

  44. 44 Anonymous said at 10:43 PM on February 5th, 2012:

  49. 49 Anonymous said at 10:11 AM on February 6th, 2012:

Actually you’d be firing him for failing to achieve his goal over 13 seasons. The fact that a supposedly inferior coach has accomplished the goal, twice, in almost half the time that Andy has had just makes the failure even more painfully obvious.

The worst part of this, for me, is the humble pie. Having to give the Devil its due. I’m left stunned, but still feel the need to respect what the Giants have done. Coughlin and Manning may have just bought their tickets to Canton, as sick as that makes me. The almighty Brady is 0-2 against that combo. Whatever they’re doing, its working.

Depressed, but also determined. We had every right to be a better team than the Giants this year. For a multitude of reasons, it didn’t happen. All the more reason to strive for greatness in 2012. I want to be the team with the confetti streaming down on their heads.

  61. 61 Anonymous said at 12:18 AM on February 6th, 2012:

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.

There is no giving the devil his due. He has earned nothing. The Giants have worked every lucky angle you could possibly work. EVERYTHING had to go their way. This was not one of those teams where you said, “hey, that was a team that earned it!”. Nor was it before. These teams are opportunistic, and I’m sorry, the guy who wins the lottery is not smarter than the guy who founds a successful company. They won. Yes. We have to live with that. But they cannot shed the fact that LUCK was a major factor. Watch the Packers game. Watch the Niners game. Watch the fact that for the first time in like 10 years, the AFC fielded the weaker opponent. Fuck the Giants with Donovan McNabb’s dick, I will never give them any respect for this. There is no giving the devil his due. Because the devil is out in the parking lot boning Punky Brewster. he doesn’t care about shit like this.

  71. 71 Anonymous said at 12:57 AM on February 6th, 2012:

I dunno… Maybe it is because I went to school in New England. Maybe it is because somehow, I haven’t been around a ton of Giants fans. But while I root against the Giants, I hate the Pats, so I found myself rooting against the Pats instead of rooting against the Giants. And honestly, as much as it pains me as an Eagles fan to see a division rival winning the superbowl, I think it is unfair to say they are the most undeserving team to win it. They clearly had their fair share of lucky bounces, but would the Pats have honestly been that much more deserving? Including the playoffs, the Patriots went 15-4, but only faced four opponents that ended the season with a winning record (the Giants are included twice) and lost to every one but Baltimore in the AFC Championship game. The Giants on the other hand, played 8 games against teams with winning record and beat 5 of them. They had an awful defense in the regular season, but their offense was in the top 10 and Eli deserves credit for having a very solid season. To me, they were clearly the better team on the field in the Superbowl, and while they certainly had their fair share of luck, they took advantage of it.

  74. 74 Anonymous said at 8:05 AM on February 6th, 2012:

The Giants had 6, count ’em, 6 4th quarter comebacks this year. Compare that with our ? how many 4th quarter meltdowns. They’ve preached “finishing” since training camp and finish they did…..by winning it all. Eagles could learn a thing or two about toughness there. Another thing: they did it with 10 guys on IR! And a defection: Steve Something-or-other. Of course, the biggest factor was Eli’s incredible season. I wonder if Michael Vick could ever rise to the occasion the way Eli did this year.

What is it about Philly sports teams – Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and Sixers – other than the Phillies winning the pennant in 2008 they have just screwed the fan base over and over and over…every time I get into an discussion (which quickly turns into an argument) with anyone abt Philly sports, I get the same response – you guys are CHOKERS…cannot finish…even when things are going well – I always worry and it seems inevitable to me, that we just cannot win it all!! (and that’s exactly the way it goes)

Eli Manning. First ballot hall of famer.

I came to realize that the Giants HC is a longtime WR coach, the position he held when he was with the Eagles years ago. It would not be surprising that his WRs would perform over the years. Nicks and Curz certainly fill the bill and they deliver yesterday in SB. Just wonder if the physical and strong WRs will become the trend in the league since the Giants just won the SB with WRs like that.

Except that Cruz was a wonderful piece of luck.

He was a camp body that came out of nowhere, then the league let them stash him on IR when Cruz said his hamstring was good enough for him to play (they needed the roster spot and would have had to cut him in 2010).

You can be smart, work hard, but in this world, it’s better to be lucky than good.

Of the five weakest teams to PLAY in a SB the last 40 years, looking at wins and point differential, three are the 2007 Giants, the 2008 Cardinals and the 2011 Giants.

Sometimes you just have to get hot the right year with the right matchups.

The best Giant team of the decade was the 2008 Giants, 12-4 with a great defense, who lost to the Eagles when Elite Eli came up short against McNabb.

So the Giants have the Patriots number, and the Eagles have the Giants number – maybe we can change the playoff format so the Giants are in the AFC?
