Gameday – PS#3, at CLE
Posted: August 24th, 2012 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 58 Comments »Sorry for the late post. Bit of a crazy day. For SB Nation Philly, I wrote my game preview. Since this is a meaningless game, it is strictly a list of the key guys I’ll be watching tonight. I also try to mention what exactly I’m looking for from the players.

Jimmy Bama and I did a podcast. Since he was off in Atlantic City for a couple of days and we haven’t done a show in the last couple of days, we decided to focus on the Pats game and the players who stood out.
If you want to know the minute a show is up, follow me on Twitter or bookmark the show’s site and check daily. If you’re not on Twitter…why not? Trust me, it is a great thing. This isn’t Facebook. This isn’t a playground for goofballs. Twitter is a great source of information, with some fun mixed in. I highly recommend everyone using it during the upcoming season.

In case you missed it, Asante Samuel is the #3 CB for the Falcons right now and not scheduled to start. Here’s the story. There is still time for things to change. I don’t share this to rip Asante. I just find it interesting. I am genuinely curious to see how he plays this year.

For ScoutsNotebook I wrote some quick thoughts on Michigan OT Taylor Lewan. He is 6-8, 309 and a good athlete. Could be a Howard Mudd target for the offseason. There is also a video to watch. Good stuff.

The great Steve Van Buren died. Les Bowen wrote a terrific piece on him and his legacy. Must read material. SVB was truly one of the great Eagles of all time.
Our own AC Viking is working on a piece on Van Buren as well. I’ll post that as soon as he’s done.
The biggest beef I have with football as compared to baseball is the way that the old days are overshadowed. It almost seems as if football began in 1958 when the Colts and Giants played in their legendary title game. Heck, some people act as if the only thing that counts is the Super Bowl era.
That means far too many legends go under-appreciated, Steve Van Buren among them. RIP Mr. Van Buren, truly an Eagle for the ages.
_
Great point about the NFL’s short memory. Every decade the game re-invents itself to a certain degree, whereas baseball -strategically -goes mostly unchanged.
The difficulty in comparing players from era to era makes nostalgia tough. Plus, the team nature of football doesn’t lend itself to easy legends like Ty Cobb or Sandy Koufax. For every Jim Brown there are ten Mickey Mantle’s.
A giant in my field died the day before Steve Van Buren. We’re in a time when legends fall.
Indulge my posting of her memorium: http://aceandson.com/blog/?p=1474
That was really beautiful. Sounded like an amazing woman.
I saw Lewan mentioned as a first round target the other day. I like the two Texas A&M OTs (Joeckel and Matthews) better right now though… Could they be a target? And if so, for LT?
I’ve only watched a bit of them. Need to see more. The LT looks pretty good.
But think about the dinner conversations Matthews has had! Thats clearly invaluable.
Since this post went up late, we’ll just use this for comments during the 1st half. Hope there will be lots of good things to say about Mr. Foles.
He really held his head up high after that first interception, I like the way he handles adversity.
D looks like crap on the first series…
The Magic Juan is in over his head too
I’m not sure a coordinator can be in over his head in the pre-season
sure he can
Landri with the strip sack!!!
Landri played like a man possessed on that drive
Ick, what a start.
If I’m Andy Reid I’m telling the starting D that they don’t get to stop playing until they start playing well.
Looked like a lame duck from Foles on that one, wonder what happened.
Not a smart throw
Foles obviously wants to give the Browns announcers another chance to recognise Landri (they keep thinking he’s Jenkins)
These Browns announcers are awful btw.
They sound like hockey announcers, they are very loud
I think the color guy is Bernie Kosar
Brian Rolle looked terrible on that first drive, 2 penalties and I think he blew the coverage in the flat for that short pass that went for 20.
Damaris Johnson super slippery.
Wow, Bell looks clueless!
Demetress bell in at LT, gets beat in 2 consecutive plays
lol, these browns announcers. “He got dragged down!!!” x4, replay shows he clearly got shoved onto his butts.
Broadcasts like this make me realize I don’t understand how good we have it over at ETN.
who the heck is 47? he forced the fumble.
Ryan Rau, apparently
Ryan Rau from portland state?
http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/roster.html — Have to keep that open for preseason games haha.
Never heard of him.
Like Marsh coming up for that tackle (bootleg at the endzone around ~4 minutes in right before the second fumble).
sign at brown’s stadium: “Believeland” More like make-believe land….
Must be tough to be a browns fan. I imagine delusional thinking is a prerequisite to preserve your sanity lol.
Nice catch by Dion Lewis for the score. The Red Zone doesn’t appear to intimidate Foles, which is nice to see.
Graham with the sack! My man.
rushing straight up the middle, I think.
nice return by Johnson
This has gotta make you feel good
Did anyone see if we really had 11 men on the line for that Graham sack? or was the Browns commentator talking out of his ass again.
I feel bad for Weeden, imagine being him knowing that you will face our D-line for 4 quarters in just two weeks
Tommy must really be focusing on the game. No comments here or on Twitter. ?
Duno, I have to watch on my computer so I just got this open in the other window. Feel like I’m posting too much lol.
Demaris with some serious moves. And he just scored a td!
Wow, Damaris Johnson off to a hot start, TD catch looked good.
Ah, Premature, 2nd foot out, bummer.
Think thats coming back

what a throw
Demaris making up for last week’s sloppy play. Dude can play!
Lovely play by Boykin on that 3rd down stop.
whew, Dion Lewis slippery on that screen.
I like this #45 Philip Thomas, he did a lot of good things this first half.
Holy smokes, Brandon Graham and Philip Hunt just made a Colt Mccoy sandwich.
How many red bulls does Baldy down before commenting on a game?
Philip Thomas: that half went just the way he planned it.

Edwards skittishness aside, the Eagles have a nice methodical drive going.
Here’s a great obit of Steve Van Buren from the NYTimes. 2 pages long!

Why so dead in here–this is the only place to reliably go for intelligent commentary on the games!
I find it interesting that our top 6 linebackers all played MIKE in college for at least a season (Mathews having the most unique linebacking position of the bunch).
Tommy, would it make sense to trade Tapp to Cleveland before the preseason is over, considering we face them week 1? If not, would he fit somewhere like Seattle where he was before? Or would he be better in a place that uses the wide 9 like Detroit or Tennessee?
