PHI 10, CLE 3 – 2nd Half Thread
Posted: September 9th, 2012 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 270 Comments »Not an ideal start. Eagles offense was very sloppy. Vick got poor protection and didn’t react well. Made some highly questionable decisions. Other players took turns making mistakes.
And then Vick hit Maclin for a huge gain late in the half. That woke up the offense and led to the TD.
Eagles had 280 yards. Poor field position hurt, as did too many penalties. Clean up the mistakes and the offense should get going.
The defense was excellent. They gave up 153 yards, but about 40 of that came on the final drive when the Eagles were bend but don’t break. The Browns have not been able to sustain any drives.
The run D? As good as could be expected. Trent Richardson is 11-25. QB and WR runs netted 60 yards.
DeMeco Ryans has been a stud. 2 TFLs. Key stops on a couple of 3rd downs.
DRC has a pick.
The defense looks good.
RZ – Eagles 1 for 1. Browns 0 for 1, and we got a takeaway to stop that drive.
Let’s go put this thing away.
The run D is the best news… the line has adjusted to Wide 9 fully if this continues. In general the DL has been the star, + Ryans.
T-Law:
Somewhere in the early 2nd Q, it seemed like MM and AR abandoned the running game and just kept throwing the ball.
I know Reid likes to use the pass to get a lead (and did), but the play calling seemed to become really, really unbalanced.
Reid said he wants to lighten the load on McCoy.
Bryce Brown had 3 snaps or was it just 2(?) — and they were all pass plays.
McCoy’s had all the rest.
If the Eagles play this way offensively against the Ravens, the stat-line for Vick will look like that Bengals-Eagles game 4 years ago for D-Mac.
Let’s just run the ball a little more.
It’ll save Dunlap from having to pass block.
I’m normally not on the RUN!!! ANDY RUN!!! Bandwagon, but in this case I agree. We’ve had some success running the ball and would have had more if it wasn’t for holdings
So far our offense has looked like it is playing a third preseason game, but at least our D has checked their calendar.
2nd half! lets go!!!!
Write this down, Jason Babin made a stop in a run play.
Babin has been solid against the run today.
boykin awesome PBU
That was impressive. Good burst on that.
definitely didn’t think we would have significantly more penalty yds than richardson has rushing yds
why do we keep running to the left? its not working.
Tommy
Who’s the top o line prospect in next year’s draft?!
NFL Special-Teams Player of the Week: CHAS HENRY.
Akeem Jordan is a monster on Special Team. On every tackle.
Ok . . . DRC — NFC Defensive Player of the Week
Sign him to an extension!
well at least they didnt run it to the left this time…
Every Eagles O-lineman has a holding penalty, except Herremanns . . . yet
how many penalties and yards so far?
That’ll likely change.
McCoy misses peters more than anyone
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand another INT. great.
oh god. was that triple coverage? that was an absolutely horrible decision to throw that one.
Why does Michael Vick hate me?
ha ha, he’s paying off karma, don’t know how your karma fits into it though
Wow triple coverage
THat settles it, I’m not bringing my “Throw it to Harbor, even if it’s triple coverage” sign to the home opener
lol
Un-frigging-believable

T-Law, you’ve written many great columns and posts.
But those 6 words may be your best ever.
maclin headed to the locker room?? he was running there. wonder whats up
The irascible fan in me cries for Foles.
Bone. Head. Play.
how many penalties do we have
Feels like a million, and they’re all following something awesome. Like sacking the quarterback…getting an interception…a long run by shady…
can’t really blame the DL for that penalty…. it looked like weeden fell on his own… you have to fall on him to end the play. you play to the whistle, right?
Fitzpatrick: 3 ints
Vick: 2 ints
Stafford: 3 ints
Tannehill: 3 ints
Weedon: 3 ints
Thank god we didn’t draft Stafford….
9-7 qb…see why that’s the perception???
my god, the run d is incredible in this game. i am really impressed.
It’s 2011 all over again. Apart from the run D….
Very different from ’11. That was whole team. This is just offense. But you’re right…that group is making same mistakes.
my god, how do they not call holding on the browns OL???
D is looking great. Can’t think of one player that looks suspect.
Penalties are driving me NUTS though.
Boykin looks fantastic.
Can we start running the ball now?
This is not an “ANDY RUN!!!” plea.
It’s a run-down the clock and give Vick more manageable 3rd downs.
TE screen? was that actually by design or wtf was that? sigh.
What is the Eagles record for dumb-ass passes down the middle?
Well, now I think we’re gonna lose this game!
What is wrong with our offense
I know its the regular season.
But, jeez, Vick looks terrible.
And MM’s not helping with the playcalling at this point . . . because of the persistent 3rd-and-longs.
Maybe just a couple series w/ Nick Foles?
if we gain anything on first or second, we get a penalty, just to make sure its 3rd and long.
T-Law:
This game reminds me of D-Mac v. The Bengals.
Uugh.
I only wish a tie was possible at this point.
I think we’re seeing the effects of Vick only playing 12 snaps in the preseason.
who is making more rookie mistakes? vick or weeden?
Foles probably won’t be better, but at least he might have a future with this team.
I’m just having my 6th G&T to forget about this 2011 season.
Um…intentional grounding refs? Hello? Buehler? Buehler?
how is that not intentional grounding? he was clearly still in the pocket. didnt see anybody close to catch that one…
i wonder if vick is getting too much of the blame. he looked good early then the mccoy fumble and holding call after holding call then he just gets frustrated
so we can’t do a thing on offense yet the jets have scored 41
there you go celek
Scary to think that if the Browns were playing Colt McCoy, they might be winning.
We picked up a blitz from the slot! PBRs for everyone!
Seems like the naked bootleg roll-out may be on tape around the league…
Absolutely nothing has changed from last year. Holy shit.
MM is in that pass-pass-pass-pass rythm again
Oh boy
Beautiful
Eagles’ LBs are the best in the NFL.
Okay, that’s a bit much. But MK and DeR look great
The penalties are out of control. Crappy refs or not
This game turned into classic AR/MM.
If the passing game isn’t work, keep passing.
vick is having a bad game? if he keeps passing, he’ll break out of it.
Sigh. I know its game 1, but man, I really don’t think Vick has the chops to lead this team the SB.
The penalties are unreal
Who is looking forward to Andy’s post-game press conference and “We’ve got to do a better job there” rhetoric when asked about 180 yards of penalties or whatever it winds up being?
What about the four turnovers through three quarters?
Penalties; Turnovers; Losing to inferior talent — but for the great Run D this is 2011 Part Two. Yikes.
according to nfl.com, 11 penalties for 105 yards.
i wonder if there were any that were not accepted?
a Holding on Haden INT, and a Kelce holding when backed up in our EZ. Make that 13 from waht I remember.
They declined Watkins’ holding penalty on the goal-line so we had to punt…
also declined holding on the int
Sad this is not a home game, the “FOLES ! FOLES!” chants would have been at least fun.
T-LAW:
2008 Bengals v. Eagles. But this year, it’s good weather.
The upside of the comparison is the Eagles are headed to the NFC title game.
Very similar feel. Must be Ohio! The birthplace of aviation, presidents, and mediocre QB play…
Let’s give Vick a rest here. He’s been hit on almost every one of his 128 pass drops and if aligator arms maclin holds onto the ball we would not be trailing to the frigging browns!!!
Thanks AR for such a masterful job of play calling… Again!n!
Quite frustrating given that McCoy has run really well when given the chance…
not AR fault mac gave away the int, nor is it his fault on the holding calls or mccoy fumble
Good news is we’re still up 10-9. Bad news is that we only lead the crappy Browns 10-9.
Give the browns some props though. They are dominating the worst o line in football.
i keep hearing the announcer’s say how good the browns D were last year as well/ How much of this is Eagles bad O or Browns good D
Vick’s pocket presence is embarassing. He never steps up in the pocket.
Wow, just wow. Awful INT>
The Eagles just shit the bed.
There you go! I can hear the Foles chants starting already
Dude, I’m thinking about it. Awful. He’s an INT machine.
They were in a jam – Vick not having a pre-season was a real problem, but if they started Foles and he got lit up, we’d never hear the end of it. Now we’ll never hear the end of it the other way.
so now we cant even start the play b4 the penalties
why oh god why are we still passing?!?
Ask Marty
wow!!!
My thought exactly
Are you kidding me!
What’s the run/pass ratio this half? 0:22? Maybe next time they drop 9 back in to coverage, we hand it to – I don’t know – LeSean McCoy?
Try staring more at Maclin.
Man, I cannot WAIT to call into WIP to blame this on Juan Castillo and Donovan McNabb.
on hte plus side, the only way they were going to get a TD was if the offense gave it to them.
And the Michael Vick Era in the Eagles comes to a painful end!
4 interceptions. Wow, wow, wow, wow.
McCoy has, I believe, a SINGLE carry in the 2nd half.
What the fuh . . . .
Again, just HORRIBLE play calling by MM.
Vick’s not playing well. Mix up the calls.

You think the Brown’s are fooled on play-action ?
Uh . . . no. INT for TD.

Wow, next week against the Ravens could be a blood bath (even if the Birds win today).
Flacco’s no slouch.
Looks like we will have a QB controversy. Oh boy I do love the Eagles!
It’s been too long since the last time
Why is Reid putting him back out there? Put Nick Foles in, he clearly gives us a better chance at winning.
Being an eagles fan:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisyphus
I just want the marty era to end.
No disagreement.
But Reid is standing on the sideline letting it happen.
who’s in?
10 points later, you run…
dont run when you have the lead, run when you think you can’t get the lead back.
What the fuck was Maclin doing? Where was the block?
if he even moved closer to that guy, mccoy was gone.
Looks like someone is afraid of contact today.
Nick Foles please! I formation and run every play
43:18 WTF?!
5 turnovers, we continue where we started last year. The Eagles vs the Eagles and the other team
And the refs! (usually — today was their own fault)
Remember the old “if the team shows it can run early in the game, then we’ll run” excuse?
In the immortal words of Buddy Ryan . . .
RUN THE DAMN BALL.
And they are.
That “running the ball” gadget play is quite effective.
Successful run, successful run, successful run, successful run….lets pass.
McCoy came out after 3 great runs.
TIme for a pass. NOT
Can we Marty on intervention? He has an addiction to the pass.
I don’t know if it’s because the otherwise awful play today, but it looks so easy to run the ball, it’s working!
The Browns (correctly) geared up for passing in the second half. I suspect they game-planned all week for pass pass pass, and Andy/MM didn’t disappoint.
Keep running. For the love of God, keep running!
god, mccoy is so effing good. and bryce brown looks good too. RUN THE BALL!
It’s maddening to watch McCoy on this post-Pick 6 drive just pound the rock.
its like he’s saying we should’ve been doing this
why the hell werent we doing this earlier
To overreact a bit, we are looking like the worst NFC East team by far. And RGIII looks flat out amazing vs the Saints, (and this is not overreacting).
John Lynch is an idiot. Methinks he got too many concussions…
This is some truly bad broadcasting. He’s the Mike Vick of color commentators.
You know, that RB of our is kinda good, who woulda thought
Even after gashing them with McCoy, it looks like the Browns are still selling out on the pass rush.
When it rains…
How many of you picked the Cleveland Browns? Good news is the QB play we’re facing the rest of the way can’t get much better than Brandon Weeden….
Cue up the 7 minute, Weeden drive to the end zone.
that would happen, right?
Don’t make me come to LA and kill you!!!
Okay… 6 minute drive?
Of course he misses the fg
I think we all knew that FG would miss.
i definitely did
Well i want to be on the universe where we all new he’d hit it. This is wank
Over/Under on Trent Richardson to Emmitt Smith comparisons from John Lynch for the rest of the game: 4
man i cant wait to play the ravens/steelers/giants/cowboys/redskins!! all losses!!!
Groundhog day. Can’t wait until June already.
This sure does look like the end of the Michael Vick era….this game is making me sad.
At least Demeco is showing why they took them!!
Somebody get Koy Detmer in a helmet and get him out there!!!
Fact: The Eagles had more playoff wins in the Koy Detmer Era than they do after he was unceremoniously shunted aside for Kevin Kolb. He is clearly what we’re missing.
what do you guys think? a 5th INT? lots of penalties? what will go wrong on this drive?
I’ve got 30 yard pass to Jackson called back because of a Kelce hold…
The dog knows it’s crunch time – she’s hiding under a blanket.
Now that’s funny.
5th pick coming….aiming for a new low right?
And whats Donovan up to right now?
NO!!! I’m thinking of a 2nd TD.
Michael Vick is terrible. Worst starting QB in the division. Time to look to the future. 0-16 and Matt Barkley?
If the Eagles score a TD this game is over
i would rather vick just run the ball at this point!!!
yea, right now, i’m not too concerned with him getting hurt. lol
I agree, maybe he’ll find his mojo in doing so.
Maybe Vick’s new vest isn’t kevlar, it’s kryptonite.
Listen . . . you can hear the NFL Films’ music as the Eagles march for the TD.
Bump, bump, bump, bummmm, bummmmm, bummmm, bump . . .
Oh I think there will be some bumps…
That just brought the penalty yard differential to under 200!
Good teams win these kinds of games.
And great teams don’t get into these kinds of games (with the Browns)
2004?
wow. mccoy was really close to breaking that one away.
John Lynch (CHUCKLING): “They never call offensive pass interference…” Pretty sure we had that called on us earlier this game…
and then the browns do the same thing and don’t get called for it… hmmm…
4th and inches? please no qb sneak….
Flip 90… touchdown.
Time for Chris Polk to earn some money?
While we await this idiocy, on the second DRC pick, did he throw his towel up in the air on purpose? If so, GREAT distraction move…
ooh. i’d like to see a replay of that. though his second pick looked easier than the first.
have we officially given up running behind dunlap?
Looks that way, huh? Time to counter and try one off Mathis…
T-Law:
You’ve gone on radio silence . . .
Well well well… if it isn’t our old nemesis, the red zone…
The next 4 plays should be run, run, run ,run.
What could possibly go wrong?
Okay… 12 feet to glory…
Can we all agree now . . . Marty M is an awesome O.C. And Vick is totally clutch.
Of course, there’s 2 minutes left and 6 yards to go.
Paging Ronnie Brown and Ernest Byner…
In the olden days, we’d have McNabb roll right, shovel pass to Westbrook…
So our best offensive player again this year is LeSean McCoy – lets not give him a carry near the end zone.
HANDS AND FEET OF CLAY!!!!!!
lol
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
used the ref to pick the defender. nice.
pheeeee… eeeew! For now
ok, defense. just go out there and keep doing what youve been doing all game.
Yes, please.
Like AC Viking said, we never once doubted this offense…
Avant and Jair-Jar team up for the stop…
Wouldn’t a defensive breakdown now be the perfect end for miserable eagles fans
i would laugh, but i was thinking that earlier. that would absolutely be the most painful outcome of this game.
I wasn’t even joking, with how the game went, I wouldn’t put it past them
John Lynch laughing at Boykin’s injury… that’s nice.
I’m bringing that “Throw it to Harbor in triple coverGE” sign to the game
I can’t upvote this enough.
lol didnt you say earlier that you WERENT going to bring that sign? haha
I was just going to paint over it
Coleman with a DAWK!!!!!!!!
THAT’S GAME! WOOOOOOOO!
Fletch with the pressure (Fletchure?)
Cox with penetration. (Sorry, sorry, sorry)
Eagles Victory. No one in Philly doubted it for a second!
Ugly win, but I’ll take it for now.
Yeah, I think at the half, the new goal became “just win.” Obviously there will be plenty to “take a look at” for AR and the staff…
thats the bottom line my brotha
this is awesome. roommate comes into the room to see how the game is going. “ok, i’ll sit and watch”.
as soon as the browns start the play he calls it “interception”.
oh thank god.
You should have him do that more often.
I never doubted them!
Kurt all pro!
I for one welcome our new rookie QB.
ha ha, crazy!
YOU’RE CRAZY! What’s the local time? Are you off to work?
I bet you don’t regret staying up to watch this
When was the last time an eagles QB led the team to a 4th quarter comeback victory ?
miracle in the meadowlands 2
Vince Young against the G-men last year. No?
didn’t somebody say just one point more than the browns, did u have to cut it so close ass
I would say – conservatively – this game took about 9 hours off my life. That’s not bad for the Eagles.
This is exactly the kind of game the Eagles lost year after year from 1962 to 1979,
In 1979, Nickle back John Sciarra dropped an INT against the ‘Boys that would have clinched the game. Staubach throws a TD on the next play. Cowboys win.
For years, the Eagles’d drop a game clinching INT before the winning TD.
Or they’d miss recovering a fumble that would clinch the game.
Today, the Eagles lucked out.
But good teams win games where they play like crap. And in Week 16, if the Eagles are in the hunt, no one will care about this game.
Of course, if MM had called more running plays, this wouldn’t have happened.
nice to see another team steal defeat from the jaws of victory for a change. Looked *very* familiar
sigh. weeden just barely gained more yards than we had in penalties (118 to 110)
Niners/Pack, or Panthers/Buccs? I’m leaning toward the latter…
I’m watching SF/GB & ARZ/SEA.
Watching SF/GB and Car/TB
Niners Pack + Endzone channel
so i am no longer wearing my eagles cap took it off during that last drive out of frustration and sweating
That’s what happened to my hair during the 2004 Super Bowl run.
So was at least some of the many penalties due to bad reffing?
I thought at least 3 calls weren’t “great” (Maclin holding in the 3rd quarter on a McCoy 12 yard run, Kelce sort of holding in the same quarter, and the Hunt “roughing the passer” call), BUT, I would say we see mediocre calls with the real refs, too. I know I just became hyper-aware of the calls because we were making so many bad penalties and because we know we have replacement refs.
Very true. And the amount of penalties we had is unacceptable no matter who the refs are.
Yeah, we wouldn’t want to turn “replacement refs” into this season’s “shortened offseason” for the excuse du jour…
follow up question – how many calls did you see that they missed on the browns??
I don’t look much at that stuff, so don’t know. But there was a block in the back on Cole on a long-ish run that they didn’t call
LeSean McCoy lost 60 yards of production due to penalties.
Well, the good news is the Giants are bottom of the division.
Excellent analysis.
There’s a lot to dissect in this game, but it’s great to just get away with a win. I also think – much like the oft-disputed effects of the “win streak” to end last season – that ending the game with a sustained drive from inside our 10 (I think, right?) can only help build “character.” If we had dropped this game, it would be easy to slip into last year’s mindset.
yea, i think it started at the 9
Whats the deal with Boykin?
On the Eagles home page, you’ve got Bo Wulf with Adam Caplan… in a suit and tie! Very bizarre.
Even has the pocket square. It’s unsettling.
They do that for pre- and post-game shows. I don’t like it. Prefer them in Eagles gear, looking casual. Although…that Bo Wulf is sexy no matter what he wears.
Tommy are you just gonna do a defensive DGR and imagine we left the O off the field because the D had everything under control?
This was the kind of win that was as painful as a loss. It’s a good thing the Browns defender dropped the 5th interception or it could have been one of the worst days ever.
Watching it, sure, but now I can at least joke about it. If we lost I would be in fetal position, shouting WHY DO YOU HATE ME VICK AND REID! for the next 3 days
I’m not sure I can joke yet. Weeden was 12/35 for 118 yards and 4 interceptions, and we still needed a last minute drive to pull out the win (which shouldnt have happened because the Browns defender dropped a very catchable interception on the goal line…)
I’m happy we won, but what does this say about our prospects for the rest of the season? Aspirations of a super bowl? This is the worst game Vick has played in forever, he’s trending downward since 2010, not up. He struggled mightily against the blitz once again, its like you send a rusher or two at him and he freezes. Not helped by the braintrust of Andy Reid and MM putting up an 80:20 pass run ratio despite good rushing numbers and struggling with the pass. Notice our offense did not settle down and start moving the ball with any consistency till we decided to get shady involved.
I guess what I’m saying is, our offense looked a mess in all the ways that it was supposed to be worked on.
On the flip side, the defense looked very good and Demeco Ryans is the real deal. He was awesome today, making plays everywhere. DRC was awesome. The DL did good against the run. Can’t say I have anything to complain about from Juan’s unit.
Foles…..need I say more
Foles…Foles…Foles
Penalties from a focused team……no way!
Is it too late for me to change my win total for the season?? Dunlap was a turnstile and Vick showed little composure. At least he threw a handful of pressures out-of-bounds. I was in a crowded bar when Vick slid. Someone mockingly shouted, “He slid, he slid!!” When I complained it was head first, he jokingly replied “Baby steps”. Ahh, Vick, you’re killin’ us, dude.
o-line was stanky. this is a huge problem. love kurt coleman. love the secondary. d-line was good enough, no big stats but disruptive. love the defense, demeco ryans is a stud. michael vick made some terrible decisions. but we won. mixed feelings, should have handled the browns with more ease which is disconcerting but came through in the clutch which has not been an eagles trait as of late. good to see. need to give demetress bell a chance I think. god i miss JP. might need to give dembell a chance. vick wasn’t great but was under major pressure constantly.
Well, it’s good we got rid of hat over-the-hill kicker.
