Reynolds Wrap
Posted: September 3rd, 2012 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 27 Comments »The Eagles filled the 8th and final practice squad spot with an OL named Matt Reynolds. He is a rookie from BYU. And the younger brother of Dallas Reynolds.
Matt was undrafted and then signed with Carolina. He was their 3rd string RT this summer. I thought he definitely was a draftable player and it surprised me he wasn’t picked. Here is my pre-draft write-up on him. Matt played LT in college, but I never saw that kind of potential in him. He looked more like a RT or OG to me.
He isn’t a great athlete, but should be good enough to play in Mudd’s system. I think the Eagles added another OL because they just aren’t sure what they have with their backup OL. Dallas Reynolds isn’t proven. Nate Menkin has only been here a couple of days. Dennis Kelly is a guy the team is high on, but he’s unproven. Chase Beeler is new to the team. The Eagles are going heavy at an area of uncertainty.
Julian Vandervelde was hoping to come back here when Tampa let him go. The Eagles had some interest, but how much is unclear. Vandy wasn’t going to clear waivers until tomorrow. The Eagles decided to grab Reynolds instead. The advantage with Matt is versatility. He can play RT, but also should be able to play OG. Vandy is a G. He lacks the size for OT. Tried to play C this summer and struggled mightily.

What’s up with Monte Taylor? Heck if I know. Right now he’s on the street and I don’t know if anyone is talking to him. This flat out shocks me. Taylor had a terrific summer and looked like an excellent developmental prospect. I do wonder if the Wide-9 is working against him. Teams are thinking “that’s the system, not him”. I sure didn’t think that was the case at all. I do think Taylor is a great fit for the Wide-9 and he’s not made for every scheme, but he showed serious potential. Dismissing that is dumb.
We’ll see what happens. Derek Landri was unemployed for a month last year because teams had their heads up their butts. He got his chance and played lights out. I hope Taylor keeps that in mind. Stay focused and be ready when the phone does ring.

For PE.com I wrote about the Eagles loaded roster. You can argue about just how good this roster is. Best of the Reid era? Best ever? Overrated? Underrated? I do think you have to acknowledge that there is a lot of talent and the Eagles have big time potential this year. The challenge is playing up to that potential. Didn’t happen last year.

Injury updates:
* Colt Anderson wants to play. Did practice. I think holding him back a week might be wise.
* Casey Matthews practiced and says he’s ready to go.
* Jason Babin practiced and says he’s ready to go.
* Michael Vick practiced and says he’s ready to go.
* No Riley Cooper.

Joselio Hanson and Keenan Clayton are now Raiders. I think new GM Reggie McKenzie wanted them for talent reasons, but also he wanted guys from a good organization in there. The Raiders have been highly dysfunctional for years. You need quality role players and veterans to help change a team around. Hanson, our beloved MmmBop, is a quality veteran and slot corner. As much as Keenan drove me crazy with his finesse run defense, the guy was good on STs and in some coverage units. Good luck to them in Oakland.

Did you guys know that Lady Dorenbos was hot? Wow. Long snappers get all the chicks. I’m guessing she got beauty tips from Nick Foles.
