PHI at PIT – 2nd Half Thread

Posted: October 7th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 267 Comments »

We’re down 10-0.

* Vick has a pair of costly fumbles.

* The OL is getting confused by some blitzes.

* Balanced offense so far.  No complaints there.

* No big plays for the offense. Could use one (25 or more yds).

* Defense isn’t getting enough pressure on Big Ben.  Might want to mix in more blitzes.

* PIT’s short passing game got going in the 2nd half.  Need to adjust for that.

* We were down 17-7 at half vs BAL.  This is still a very winnable game.

Let’s start small. How about some good kick coverage to start.

    That’ll work.

So colt anderson DOES make a difference

  8. 8 Matt Hoover said at 2:47 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Why are we getting away from Havali as the lead blocker for Shady? That was working why stop?

    Ugh.

  10. 10 bdbd20 said at 2:49 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Well, it looks like we won’t have to deal with Big Ben scrambling.

Their running game is looking pretty good.

  11. 11 Baloophi said at 2:50 PM on October 7th, 2012:

    Zero pressure.

  12. 12 TheRogerPodacter said at 2:50 PM on October 7th, 2012:

even when we have good coverage in the secondary, they still complete the pass. damn…

    Thank the maker!

  14. 14 bdbd20 said at 2:52 PM on October 7th, 2012:

I’ll have to admit that was great chemistry between Ben and Wallace on that play.

  15. 15 ACViking said at 2:53 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Eagles once led 79-1 in yards.

    Outgained about 180 – 30 after that.

    oh my guh.

  17. 17 TheRogerPodacter said at 2:53 PM on October 7th, 2012:

punt return team is almost laughably bad these days. can’t wait to see the penalty…

  18. 18 phillychuck said at 2:53 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Is Nnamdi becoming a liability? Seems other teams are attacking him.

  19. 19 Baloophi said at 2:55 PM on October 7th, 2012:

    Becoming?!

  20. 20 bdbd20 said at 2:56 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Nnamdi is what he is. He is not Revis, but he can be good. No CB is gonna look good when the D-line is getting whipped.

  21. 21 DamonL86 said at 2:53 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Our return game is a joke

  22. 22 TheRogerPodacter said at 2:54 PM on October 7th, 2012:

lets try this once again. last return was for a whopping 3 yards. lol

  23. 23 dropscience said at 2:55 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Agreed, and I bought in during the preseason. Shame on me.

  24. 24 lilmc said at 2:56 PM on October 7th, 2012:

He is averaging 5 yards a return. Why not Desean?

  25. 25 Baloophi said at 2:54 PM on October 7th, 2012:

This will give us a chance to fumble the return…

  26. 26 bdbd20 said at 2:54 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Moten looking good so far. I believe he drew that penalty.

  27. 27 TommyLawlor said at 2:56 PM on October 7th, 2012:

    He did.

  28. 28 Corry Henry said at 2:54 PM on October 7th, 2012:

  29. 29 TheRogerPodacter said at 2:55 PM on October 7th, 2012:

per joe buck – rekick cost us about 1 yard of field position. but hey, we got a nice punt return.

Has the NFL solved the Eagles’ version of the Wide 9?

  31. 31 iskar36 said at 2:58 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Honestly, if that was against us, I would be pissed, but I’ll take it if we can jump start our offense.

  32. 32 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:03 PM on October 7th, 2012:

i’d be pissed at whoever the defender was for leading with his helmet like that. either go in to wrap up or lead with your shoulder.

  33. 33 iskar36 said at 3:06 PM on October 7th, 2012:

That wasn’t the penalty though. It was a “late hit”. In fact, I’m not even sure you can be called for helmet to helmet once the player is established as a runner.

  34. 34 phillychuck said at 2:58 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Clark should get a fine, too.

  35. 35 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:00 PM on October 7th, 2012:

interesting that on 3rd & 2, we run behind the two TE. someone on the OL got some awesome push on the left side too.

  36. 36 dropscience said at 3:00 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Watkins did something we can be happy about for once.

  37. 37 Baloophi said at 3:02 PM on October 7th, 2012:

omg vick. hold. on. to. the. ball.

  40. 40 iskar36 said at 3:01 PM on October 7th, 2012:

For fuck sake. Someone make Vick hold onto the fucking football!

  41. 41 Baloophi said at 3:03 PM on October 7th, 2012:

He needs some sort of high-powered electromagnet attached to his magical kevlar vest… that way when he tucks to run the ball will stay attached to his body.

  42. 42 phillychuck said at 3:01 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Fine him, too. Steelers need to figure out they can’t play like that in 2012. Aikman doesn’t get it, either.

  43. 43 rls255 said at 3:03 PM on October 7th, 2012:

That’s cause Aikman took too many hits to the head, just doesn’t compute to him.

  44. 44 A_T_G said at 3:02 PM on October 7th, 2012:

I’d like to see a little no huddle. Maybe it would get Vick into the game.

  45. 45 rls255 said at 3:08 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Maybe their saving it for the 4th? I wanna see it too, been working for us.

  46. 46 bdbd20 said at 3:03 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Mundy has a rep as a headhunter. Nice job of Maclin of playing dead there, if that was a flop.

  47. 47 phillychuck said at 3:03 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Whn Vick throws the ball on time, he throws really nice passes. They need to scheme so that he doesn’t have to scramble.

  48. 48 iskar36 said at 3:04 PM on October 7th, 2012:

That is 4 times Vick has not had good ball security. If we lose this game, it is all on Vick.

  49. 49 Corry Henry said at 3:04 PM on October 7th, 2012:

I’m always curious as to why players act shocked when they get a flag after a hit like Mundy and Clark each had. If you lower your head and launch, you’re going to get a flag and then a fine. Refs are erring on the side of caution. Simple as that.

  50. 50 A_T_G said at 3:04 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Steelers looked pretty pissed about the TO. Hope that comes back to bite them.

  51. 51 lilmc said at 3:08 PM on October 7th, 2012:

  55. 55 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:05 PM on October 7th, 2012:

gotta love mccoy. we need to keep getting him the ball in space!

  56. 56 TommyLawlor said at 3:05 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Great play call, great job by Shady. Huge TD.

  57. 57 Corry Henry said at 3:06 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Shady is easily what Brian Westbrook was to this offense. When he’s going, this offense is going. When he’s not, the offense is stagnant.

  58. 58 rls255 said at 3:07 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Agree, he cut that back and burst up the seam. Nice work on that one!

  59. 59 Baloophi said at 3:07 PM on October 7th, 2012:

A good defensive stop here and there’s cause for optimism…

  60. 60 ACViking said at 3:07 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Quick pass to the RB in space . . . a Bill Walsh classic WCO.

Works great when you have a McCoy there.

Now . . . SACKS. We need SACKS.

  61. 61 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:10 PM on October 7th, 2012:

no sack there, but again some good pressure on 3rd down.

  62. 62 iskar36 said at 3:12 PM on October 7th, 2012:

At some point though, the “good pressure” should lead to sacks. We have 7 sacks in a little over 4.5 games, that simply is not good enough.

  63. 63 A_T_G said at 3:08 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Hmm, those quick passes into the blitz work pretty well. Someone should write that down.

  64. 64 ACViking said at 3:08 PM on October 7th, 2012:

    T-Law:

    Quick question . . .

What adjustments do you see the offense having made at halftime?

  65. 65 TommyLawlor said at 3:12 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Nothing stood out to me there, except for the quick pass vs blitz on the TD.

  66. 66 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:08 PM on October 7th, 2012:

aaaaaaaaaaaaand once again, we can’t cover kickoffs.

  67. 67 Corry Henry said at 3:08 PM on October 7th, 2012:

And the special teams just lets the momentum swing right back.

  68. 68 Baloophi said at 3:08 PM on October 7th, 2012:

RE: kick-off problems. Are we better served just kicking it out of bounds?

  69. 69 TommyLawlor said at 3:12 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Guys were right there, just missed on that tackle. Wasn’t like last week when there were huge running lanes.

  70. 70 phillychuck said at 3:09 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Who missed that tackle on the kickoff? 57?

  71. 71 ACViking said at 3:09 PM on October 7th, 2012:

    I’m Sorry.

BOBBY APRIL NEEDS TO FOLLOW ROLLE TO THE BREAD LINE

  72. 72 phillychuck said at 3:12 PM on October 7th, 2012:

    Sadly, I agree.

  73. 73 Zachary Kaplan said at 3:09 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Need a TO at some point. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t see us on the right side of the outcome of this game if we stay -2.

  74. 74 rls255 said at 3:09 PM on October 7th, 2012:

With this rain our D needs to start trying to punch the ball out. BDawk was awesome at that. First guy make the tackle, second go for the ball.

  75. 75 Corry Henry said at 3:10 PM on October 7th, 2012:

    I’ll take a 3 and out.

  76. 76 Ben Hert said at 3:11 PM on October 7th, 2012:

    LANDRI!!! Awesome play!

  77. 77 Baloophi said at 3:12 PM on October 7th, 2012:

When you’re a punt returner, what’s the idea behind telling your punt-returners to get away from the ball… but then you get real close to it? Can anything good come out of that?

  78. 78 Daniel said at 3:13 PM on October 7th, 2012:

No and I don’t know what the last guy was doing either. Missed who it was, but he was hovering and looked like he went to fake grab it. Really stupid and dangerous.

  79. 79 aub32 said at 5:03 PM on October 7th, 2012:

it was colt. he was going to pick it up after the steelrs player touched the ball. if the steelers touch the ball first, then it’s a free return. if we turn it over it goes back to the spot it was touched

  80. 80 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:12 PM on October 7th, 2012:

such a long punt, i am AMAZED that we didnt even have a chance to return that one. it looks like we are keeping a guy halfway back to block the first guy that gets by on the outside, but it can’t help us if theyre getting by on all sides.

  81. 81 phillychuck said at 3:13 PM on October 7th, 2012:

You’ve got to catch the punt to return it. Johnson made no attempt to catch it. Bring back Chad Hall.

  82. 82 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:13 PM on October 7th, 2012:

i hear reno mahe needs a job.

  83. 83 iskar36 said at 3:14 PM on October 7th, 2012:

I don’t want Hall back. Get Jackson back there. He is an actual weapon as a returner.

  84. 84 phillychuck said at 3:18 PM on October 7th, 2012:

At least Hall caught the ball in the air.

  85. 85 Daniel said at 3:12 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Guys, other than the TD and Landri being awesome — anyone notice the other team had to burn a timeout before we did!? We’re almost done the third quarter and big red hasn’t blown one yet!!

Let’s hope we keep this to a FG…

Fumbling in the end zone was a disaster. Even if we “only” get a FG there, we’d be within one possession no matter what happens here. Remember, the Steelers can easily manage an 8 minute drive.

  132. 132 iskar36 said at 3:31 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Definitely need to challenge. At the very least you call a time out for a potentially big play.

  133. 133 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:32 PM on October 7th, 2012:

With us down to 1 timeout, these next two plays pretty much decide the game. If they get the first, they are basically in FG range and can run out most of the clock before kicking the FG. Need the D to come up big on this play.

  211. 211 phillychuck said at 3:57 PM on October 7th, 2012:

  222. 222 Thorin McGee said at 4:05 PM on October 7th, 2012:

On paper, I would’ve taken a loss on the road in Pittsburgh, but this one we gave away.

  239. 239 Zachary Kaplan said at 4:05 PM on October 7th, 2012:

And I believe people told me I couldn’t bad mouth the defense in the earlier post by Tommy. Great performance today….but what happens? They can’t hold the other team when the game was on the line. Steelers, much like the Giants, marched down the field for a chance to win (unlike the Giants, and Ravens, this was on the 1st time they blew the lead).

  240. 240 DarthBanner said at 4:05 PM on October 7th, 2012:

This loss brought to you by a healthy dose of Michael Vick Suck with a pinch of Andy Reid timeout magic and a hint of Juan coming up small with the game on the line.

Dude, what’s it with you and the coaches? Sure there was some questionable calls, but this game was CLEARLY lost on the field by the players. Period.

  242. 242 DarthBanner said at 4:07 PM on October 7th, 2012:

  246. 246 phillychuck said at 4:16 PM on October 7th, 2012:

  247. 247 rls255 said at 4:28 PM on October 7th, 2012:

We bascially controlled this game but turned the ball over twice in the first quarter. Once in an area where we should have at least gotten chip shot fg. I’m guessing you wanna see Foles in there? Yeah, I’m intrigued by Foles based off the pre-season but once you make that change you can’t go back and I’m not ready to go there.

  257. 257 bdbd20 said at 4:10 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Maybe we’re just not that good. If our offense keeps this up, we just have to come to the realization that Vick is not gonna be the answer.

  258. 258 Zachary Kaplan said at 4:11 PM on October 7th, 2012:

My angry thoughts on this team after another unimpressive game?

    PRETENDER

Offense is awful. Can’t block. Can’t pass. Can’t hold onto the ball. Can’t get open. Just a awful offense. I don’t care about the yardage, this team isn’t a “high powered” offense.

86 points through 5 weeks. 17.2 PPG. No team is “real” that averages 17.2 PPG.

The Defense? Very sold. But comes up small in key spots….all the time. 3 – 4th quarter leads blown in 6 chances (yes the shitty offense bailed them out two times, but point remains). You would like your “great” defense to come up with the stops more than 50% of the time.

Turnovers? -2…Both on Vick – could have lost 2 more (cost on one the Vick non-slide) and DeSean Jackson fighting for more yards. You don’t win in the NFL consistently when you give the ball away.

I’m sure I’ll read how this was a tough game, wasn’t a “should” win. But you know what, this isn’t a good team ,don’t cover up the poor performance because the Steelers are hard to beat at home. This Eagles team should have won, but they have bad QB play and make stupid mistakes.

  259. 259 rls255 said at 4:16 PM on October 7th, 2012:

I agree to an extent, but it’s October. Still plenty of times to turn this thing around.

  260. 260 ACViking said at 4:11 PM on October 7th, 2012:

This Eagles defense is NOT the 1991 version.

And the NFL in 2012 is NOT the NFL of 1991.

Reid needs to get the offense untracked.

Or this season is going to be very long.

  261. 261 Baloophi said at 4:13 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Wasn’t the old goal for a defense to keep teams under 17 points? We’re averaging 16 on offense – even an outstanding defense couldn’t win games for this team.

Obviously the red zone turnovers need to stop, but it does seem like we’re missing something else this year… big plays, maybe?

  262. 262 phillychuck said at 4:15 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Exactly–no long TDs, no defensive TDs. Need a few game-changers next week.

  263. 263 phillychuck said at 4:13 PM on October 7th, 2012:

Pretty badly played game by Vick. Difference in the game was the Steelers’ superior QB.

  264. 264 iskar36 said at 4:42 PM on October 7th, 2012:

My take aways from this game were:
    1. Vick is a turnover machine. At some point, the coaches need to bench him with his continued turnover issues. I don’t care if they bring him back a game later, but the message needs to be sent to Vick.

    2. Our offense in general is simply not very good. Maybe it is all on Vick, but we simply are not scoring enough. Yards are great, but you win based on points, not yards, and we are not scoring them.

    3. Our defense is better than last year, but our dline is overrated. We have 7 sacks on the season. That’s 1.4 sacks per game. Sure, sacks are not everything, but when you are using the Wide 9 which is supposed to thrive on getting sacks, you are not getting the job done when you have 0 sacks in two games.

And just to compare how other teams are doing against the QB/Olines we have faced, here are a few statistics.

Browns – 9 sacks total allowed; 2 by the Eagles. Averaging 1.8/game
Ravens – 9 sacks total allowed; 2 by the Eagles. Averaging 1.8/game
Cardinals – 23 sacks total allowed; 3 by the Eagles. Averaging 4.6/game.
Giants – 8 sacks total allowed; 0 by the Eagles. Averaging 1.6/game
Steelers – 9 sacks total allowed; 0 by the Eagles. Averaging 2.25/game (had a bye week already)

So outside of the Browns & Ravens games, our dline (and blitzers when we blitz) have simply not put up the numbers other teams have.

3-2 is a mirage. The Eagles are dead last in offense, don’t have a sack in two games and Vick is leading the league in turnovers.

Any confidence left in Vick? Offense just isn’t very good with him behind center right now. They even did a lot of 3 step drops to ease the pressure. Vick wasn’t awful, but he’s not good enough to lead a SB contender..
