Big Red’s Finale – 1st Half
Posted: December 30th, 2012 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 168 Comments »Here is your game preview for today: the Eagles are at the Giants.
How’s that for keeping it simple?
Part of me is praying for a win, so we can see if the players carry Andy Reid out on their shoulders. Part of me is just ready for 4:30 to get here so we can officially declare the season over and move forward.
The big news…TE Evan Moore is inactive. Who will be our primary Red Zone target???
Fletcher Cox and Mychal Kendricks are out.
The Eagles and Giants rarely play a boring game. What compelling/weird/wild thing will happen today? My fantasy is a shutout, but more likely is Eli Manning running for a 99-yard TD.
Good luck, Big Red.
_
If you put that way, I have to root for the Eagles to lose for fear of a lot of off season back injuries that linger into next year.
“Who will be our primary Red Zone target???”
I hope I’m wrong, but I’m thinking it will be Stevie Brown.
Nicely done.
Red Zone started early today.
With Vick playing for next year’s contract and an Eagles win dropping them several draft positions and out of the Top 5, there is no way the Giants can win. It’s a lock.
You could be right.
I may have underestimated how much the Eagles have already given up this season.
When is the last time both the Eagles & Giants missed the playoffs?
1999, I think.
Loved Reid, but he was undone by bad coaching hires. I hope that file that he bought with him in ’99 is restocked before he gets back into it.
Can you believe this game is being televised in the UK? Of course, this means I can’t watch it with my NFL Gamepass ticket. I have been able to watch as many games live this year as we have wins. SCREW YOU ROGER GOODHALL!!!! Wanker!
It’s working on gamepass for me so far
For me too now. OOOOPs! However I won’t retract anything I said about Roger.
Food for thought as Black Monday approaches. Mike McCoy may be the next Sean Payton( they even both rock the visor!). Young accomplished guy with a brilliant offensive mind. Can the eagles really afford to pass on him( even if we have to wait on him after Denver’s playoff run). Would you pass up an opportunity to hire SP…..I think not.Foles has the physical tools get his mechanics and a, no doubt, he just needs someone to bugs(mechanics and awareness) fixed. McCoy made Tebow look like an NFL ready QB. Think of what he could do with foles.
Eagles check list for the new year should be;
1. New HC: McCoy ,McCoy,McCoy…..gotta say no to kelly( i know he’s the sexy pick right now).no NLF experience…no thank you.
2. Top 5 pick(even if it means we lose today.,sorry if we win,we lose)not many blue chippers in this draft.I say we get Star(DT) or LUke(LT)
3.Get a DAMN safety:free agency or high 2nd round pick.I don’t care.Just get it done.
Also, please football deities.,No major injuries today!!
Bobby April!!!!
Mike Vick!!! Turnover Machine.
Great start…and then, ugh.
What an awful throw.
Vick’s unrecognisable…..
The run defense has come to play.
Vick doing his best to spot the G-men 28 pts. All part of his plan.
Miracle, Pt 3?
May require messing with the laws of physics starting with travelling back in time and fixing Foles’ hand.
also, we don’t have DJax, and more importantly, they don’t have Matt Dodge.
Except this time Damaris Johnson takes a knee at the 1 to preserve the draft pick.
I can not see this being a good send-off for Reid..
What team is going to want Vick? He is TERRIBLE.
I hate to admit it, but I gave absolutely no desire seeing the Eagles win today. With the majority of our young guys out who I would normally want to see perform well at this time of the year, all I really care about is maintaining our draft pick.
AR deserves recognition, but he should get it without the win. Winning today only hurts the franchise.
You should get your wish.
Safety – Round 2 – that is all.
We need help there.
Free Agency, then a 2. round pick. We dont have a decent safety on the roster, I’m done with Allen and Coleman, they can battle for being the backup and the loser of that battle gets to battle Colt Anderson for ST ace.
Heres to hoping the Bills think Jairus Byrd is overrated.
its still sad watching this team play. That’s the guy that they have in there over Allen. Wow, that really speaks volumes for Nate
Season in a nutshell. Do something good (on-side kick), do 2 things bad (TO, give up soft TD).
At least they are consistently disappointing.
Re: Miracle at the Meadowlands
There have been 3:
1. 1978 — Edwards runs back fumbled hand-off by Pisarcik/Csonka as G-men try to run out the clock.
2. 1988 — 10 years to the Sunday after MM-I . . . Clyde Simmons runs a blocked Eagles FG attempt in for the winning TD (yes, an Eagles’ FG attempt).
3. 2010 — Vick’s last great game
I wasn’t counting Clyde’s play. I’ll adjust that for the future.
Re: 1988 OT Win. That is a top 3 Eagles game for me. I vividly remember the Giant defenders surrounding the ref after he signaled TD (esp LT who looked so heated, maybe coked up as well) to protest the call. Generally the offense can’t advance a blocked FG, except in OT. Great game!
Vick looks terrible
Very rusty.
Nah, pretty sure he’s just a terrible QB.
I’m trying to cut the guy a little slack.
I’ve been trying to convince myself that its worth 3mil to have an extra piece to have as an option to entice our next head coach. Vick isn’t helping so far – pulling for him though.
Maybe we could try him on defense. Hes involved in more tackles than any of our defensive players anyway.
I believe the correct term is Vick-ish.
Reynolds cant even get him the ball
Definitely not a great start
Nada from Nnamdi
That was hilariously awful.
That play may have just locked up the #4 pick.
No chance we score more than 13 pts today. Probably Nnamdi’s greatest contribution to his tenure here.
Can’t play the ball to save his life.
I am very happy this is our last game
Nnamdi is useless as well. Can’t make a play on the ball.
I fear this one will be tough
Yup.
Wow. That was pathetic. Even with what should have been dpi, Nnamdi got beat for another deep td.
can we get a look at Marsh. plz bench nnamdi NOW
Sigh…go Raiders.
Sad that we’ve been reduced to this.
Yep. There’s nothing else left.
Wow, they look most putrescent today.
T-Law:
I’m hoping you’ll do a post-season breakdown on, at least, a few of the key Eagles — maybe under the heading of “Surprises / Disappointments”.
I just can’t believe how stiff Nnamdi’s been all year. Ball tracking a problem. But speed and hip turning’s been so disappointing.
It seems to me as if he has no ball awareness at all
So the surprise section would consist if who?
Nnamdi, seriously you look so so awkward making a play on the ball in flight. If your agent suggests Dancing with the Stars when your career is over; don’t do it.
Foles is looking better and better…
AR and MM not helping things one bit. Those plays don’t work with our crappy O-Line.
That 3rd down screen was a give up play.
God I hate Nnamdi Asomugha (sports hate, that is – he seems like a nice guy).
I wouldn’t bring him back next year for the veteran minimum, never mind what he’s going to make even after a restructuring.
Great guy. Ready to vote for him now for office. But what happened to fall so far so fast?
He got old, fast. Happens to CBs and RBs particularly often.
No Aso didn’t get old fast, he was never that good to begin with.
Sports hate…I like that phrase.
But but..he knows big words!!
This mess so far is not going to convince any potential HCs to want to come here
This performance will not even convince Billick 🙂
Re: G-Men’s D-Line alignment
Anyone not old enough to remember the Tom Landry “Doomsday Defenses” in Dallas back in the late ’60s and ’70s . . .
Note on 1st down how the G-men have the DE’s and DTs staggered in their closeness to the LOS. (Ex: LDE close, LDT back slightly, RDT close, RDE back a bit).
That’s the old “FLEX DEFENSE” used by the Cowboys. The point was to attack with a couple guys and read with a couple guys, and fee up the LBS.
Interesting twist by Perry Fewell.
Nice catch.
and Coleman with his obligatory whiff. I’m still a little in disbelief how much of a joke this team is
How is Coleman playing instead of Nate Allen?
The giants are gonna put up 40-50 points easily.
All I want is one interception or forced fumble.
The giants scored a total of 14 the last 2 weeks. 21 so far today. The run defense is pathetic.
This is stunning so far, even for this season.
This team is not showing up to play. No-one to love…
BG looks like the only guy hustling on D. Shady is trying too, but that’s about it. Just embarrassing and pathetic.
Was just gonna say the same thing. B-Graham and Shady want it. Dunno about everybody else.
Would seem we are missing Fletcher Cox.
Looks like the rest of my sunday just opened up.
Chaney on WIlson?
At least we are making it difficult for them!
Nice to see they came to play for the draft pick today.
21 points in one quarter? I don’t want the eagles to win, but jeez. Where is the sense of pride?! We are getting embarrassed.
Only 2 1/2 hours of this mess left.
how many more for big red?
Water torture maybe more preferable
I was really hoping for some effort for reid out of this team, but it’s looking more like a lame duck performance.
Time for Guinness… should put the flames out.
Re: Pass to McCoy
Lots of RAC
Classic WCO
That’s 2 big plays on the same drive where our lbs got lost in coverage on a standard wheel route. Ugh! Does the D communicate at all???!
Let’s just think about how a creative coach who knows how to utilize the running game (Chip Kelly or the like) could do with McCoy and Brown.
Of all Reid’s shortcomings, his ability to draft talented running backs and then habitually underutilize them because they don’t fit his pass wacky, scheme happy offense may be the most infuriating. Brown and McCoy are just the latest victims, but it goes all the way back to Correll Buckhalter.
Re: Bryce Brown
Good to see the Eagles haven’t abandoned the run.
Stick to the game plan.
I’d think we’ll get maybe 4-5 more runs the rest of the day.
Ha. Reid’s master plan at work
Before the game: “I won’t restructure my contract” Vick
After: “errr…let me rephrase that…”
Yeah, really.
One way or another he’s getting paid less next season if he still wants to be in the league.
Yep, but… I’d really prefer him to be getting paid less elsewhere. I hate him as a starter, and I don’t like him as a backup.
I’m guessing he’ll say he was misquoted.
Cmon Vick… we need you to get us down inside the 10 yard line so you can throw a soul-crushing 96 yard pick six.
My soul has already been crushed…a lot.
I get the argument that losing helps our draft positioning but….do the players think that losing really, really badly moves us up even more?
They may be confused about what “strength of schedule” means.
“but the eagles were in every game we played this season, which means every other team was a much tougher opponent!”
Fair question.
Can we fire Andy and cut Nnamdi mid game?
Nick Foles as interim head coach? He did invent that one successful play a few games ago.
and Bobby April, too, for good measure.
If the Eagles get a couple defensive turnovers (yes, that would be 15% of what they’ve done all season) and get points . . . they’re right back in it
a Bix DIx citing
Only cause Cox is on the bench.
I think the Giants LT qualified for his brown belt in Judo with the hold he had on that run.
How are we gonna fix this defense next year?
Hire a real DC?
Nothing like playing against the Eagles to rejuvenate a team
Fletcher Cox seems to have been the sole reason for the Eagles inside run defense was effective. Jeez.
There are plenty of evidence that would suggest that, yes.
I thought this was great:
@Tim_McManus: Nnamdi would not be denied. He was going to get that flag.
Keep Asomugha on the bench
T-Law:
Let’s go 3-4 next year. Can’t be worse than this.
By the way, how bad is Casey Matthews . . . he cant’ get on the field.
Nnamdi is not helping his future.
That non call on the first play followed by the “oops” was classic. Not the guy I remember watching in Oakland.
Joe Buck: “Where’s this offense been for the Giants the last three weeks?”
Answer: Playing teams with more than three NFL-starting caliber players on their defenses.
It’s not Buck. Not smug enough.
You’re right. Just Thom Brennaman imitating Buck’s annoying cadences.
To be fair to Nnamdi, we aren’t using him properly. We’re expecting him to defend passes, whereas in Oakland he just had to look fierce and the QB would throw at whichever clown was on the other side.
So that’s the trick…
Vick apparently trying to sabotage next season’s passing attack as well by getting Maclin killed.
Two dangerous throws in a row. Maybe Maclin took Vick’s seat on the bus or something.
I’d love to see Mac make those catches though.
perfect
Evan Moore cathes that wobbler for a TD!
Exactly!
unusual number of wobblers for vick…interesting
He’s pressing because he wants to do well and show off his talents for either the next coach or his future employer. If he settled down a little he’d probably have 2 TD’s at least.
It wouldn’t be a proper sendoff to this season without at least one epic screwup in each phase of the game.
Yeah, really.
You can’t even make this stuff up. We are an unbelievably bad team.
Reid and Bobby April’s decision to keep McBriar made no sense about 6 weeks ago.
Now a blown hold.
NO MORE McBRIAR!!!!!!!!!!!
At least Chas Henry had the possibility of getting better.
can’t… look… away…
Re: McBriar
I don’t care if I was wrong
Neither does Andy.
I really wish we could exploit Corey Webster like every other team.
All or nothing? More like Small or Nothing…
Just…wow. The 1/1000 of 1 % chance Reid had of keeping his job has evaporated this half.
I guess the Eagles weren’t quite done embarrassing themselves or us this season.
This is mind bogglingly bad.
Colt . . . c’mon.
10 seconds and he’s playing the area in FRONT of the goal line.
Not smart football.
Emblematic of the past 2 years.
No where to go but throw-up…
One thing I’m noticing today is that blitzes are working a bit too well. The OL isn’t really picking them up great, and the scheme is too predictable in the dump offs.
This is making me think a bit more about read option.
It also makes me think that Reid is simply too well known by the rest of the league with the talent that he has currently.
I think your last sentence is a very astute point. Reid’s been around forever and the rest of the league has adjusted to his bag of tricks. For example, is there ANY team that plays the Eagles that doesn’t know to watch for the shovel pass in goal line situations? He has not added enough new tricks to the bag, and the talent level on the O line and at quarterback isn’t what it once was… all of a sudden the offense doesn’t work anymore.
Whats going on on that great “Let’s talk about Chip Kelly” thread? —>
Hey look, halftime.
Only halftime? I don’t know if I can last the entire game
Can they just fire Reid at the half?
Before the 2nd half I just want to say . . .
Michael Vick is not the answer. Rust or no rust.
And with today’s wind (and the G-men’s dominance), I don’t know how Foles would be doing . . . .
Let’s move on.
Well to start the “high” snap on the first drive would have been in his chest…
I think the skeptics are very fair in saying we don’t yet know the answer as to whether Foles can be the guy at quarterback.
With Vick, on the other hand, I think the answer is pretty clearly “no”.
On the plus side… looks like Chicago’s going to beat Detroit, so this win won’t do the Giants any good.
Hate to see Reid go out with the team putting out one of the worst performances of his entire tenure, but at least there will be no illusions about the coach being the only problem with this team. Way too many guys playing big roles who have no business playing regular downs from scrimmage in the NFL. And we’re going to get at worst the #4 pick.. maybe #3 if Oakland wins. Also, we have a very firm rejoinder if the national media tries the “dumb Philly fans don’t appreciate how good a coach Andy Reid is” angle after he’s fired.
I’m finding that the more I hear that angle the more I think they got the tense wrong. Reid *was* good, is now bad.
RE: Can the Eagles fire Reid at Halftime
YES . . . Colts owner Jim Irsay fired Howard Schnellenberger at Halftime of a 1973 Colts Eagles game.
CORRECTION: 1974
This was Eagles football from 1962 to 1976.
The Kuharich – Williams – Khuyat – McCormack era.
Who’s to say it’s not coming back.
We don’t need to go back that far… this team reminds me a lot of Ray Rhodes’ final one. That team was a train wreck.
