WAS 13 , PHI 10 – 2nd Half

Posted: December 23rd, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 130 Comments »

Lots to like today.  Skins have only run for 48 yards.  Skins have not had a scoring drive over 32 yards.  Nick Foles has thrown for 157 yards.  Shady McCoy looks good.  The Eagles defense came up with a big 4th down stop early in the game.

And yet…the Eagles trail by 3.

Turnovers.  10 of the Skins points have come after turnovers.  They haven’t had to punt the ball today.  The Eagles are limiting the damage, but need to come up with some 3rd down stops…or some freaking takeaways.

RG3 is 8 of 13 today.  Was 14-15 in the first meeting.  The Eagles defense is playing much better.

Can we come up with a takeaway?

Theoretically, yes.  And I’m going to predict that today is the day when the INT streak comes to an end.  Kurt Coleman will come up with a pick.

As for the Eagles offense, screen passes aren’t working.  Must move away from them.  My original goal was 10 carries for each RB.  Shady has 7.  Bryce only 3.  So much for that dream.

At least this is an entertaining game.  Foles started and finished hot.  Sloppy in between.  Let’s see if he can work through his issues and play well the whole 2nd half.

I asked this on twitter, but who is the best tackling safety in the upcoming draft?

  2. 2 Matthew Verhoog said at 2:37 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

I would be happy with one that did not bite on play action and give up 50 yard touchdown passes

  3. 3 Arby1 said at 2:41 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

I’ve read Matt Elam is a very good tackler, but only stands 5 -10.

    Not a gameday discussion.

  5. 5 Iskar36 said at 2:38 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

I can’t say I am all that surprised with the rushing attempts. For me, until proven otherwise, AR can no longer use more than 1 back effectively.

    27 called passes.

    10 called runs.

    Disappointing.

Are AR/MM conceding that this O-line cannot run-block?

  7. 7 bdbd20 said at 2:41 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

I agree that we need more balance, but this WAS secondary is pretty bad.

  8. 8 Iskar36 said at 2:41 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

I think that is giving AR/MM way to much credit. It implies we would have a balanced attack if we had a healthy oline, something that is almost never true about their offense.

  9. 9 ACViking said at 2:45 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

    That’s a BINGO!!!

  10. 10 Crus57 said at 2:46 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

I think AR/MM’s idea of a balanced attack is passes to the left *and* the right.

I can’t believe I’ve never heard that one before. Brilliant.

Used a lot of PA passes. Not real keen on the calls.

  13. 13 Matthew Verhoog said at 2:43 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

apparently the defense got that memo about draft picks

Bad D on that opening drive. Ugh.

  15. 15 Iskar36 said at 2:44 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Looks like the wheels are starting to fall off. That looked easy against our defense.

  16. 16 Iskar36 said at 2:51 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

    Our redzone offense is pathetic.

  17. 17 TommyLawlor said at 2:52 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Must run the ball down there.

  18. 18 ACViking said at 2:52 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

    3rd & very long . . . and another screen.

Throw to the EZ . . . Reid went for it on 4th-1 on the first drive of the game.

    Jeez

  19. 19 Crus57 said at 2:52 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Nice cut by Celek there, he sees all the green shirts blocking on the right side and his instincts kick in – I must be needed to block on the left. Wait, whats this in my hand? …

    Hahaha

  21. 21 Iskar36 said at 2:56 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

They didn’t show a great angle, but that looks like a bad challenge for WAS. Even with the bad angle, it looked like a clear backwards pass.

  22. 22 TommyLawlor said at 2:57 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Did look backward. Ball hit at the 8.

  23. 23 Anders said at 2:58 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Depends, if the arms moves forward and they think it went backwards because he got hit, its an in completion.

  24. 24 Baloophi said at 3:00 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

And Mike Pereira remains 0 for the Universe.

  25. 25 Anders said at 3:01 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

It was a close one, I dont think you could 100% say he was throwing forward.

  26. 26 Iskar36 said at 2:59 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Intense explanation by Ed Hochuli, but it actually seemed closer than I thought. Still, an obvious fumble.

  27. 27 ACViking said at 2:58 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

    Re: Backward pass

For the past two years, those plays have resulted in TOs by the Eagles’ offense.

Like the batted-ball comment in the first half, the Eagles’ defense just doesn’t seem to get the bounces to create TOs

  38. 38 ACViking said at 3:08 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

    Yep.

  40. 40 Iskar36 said at 3:09 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

  42. 42 Iskar36 said at 3:11 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Wait, Colt Anderson couldn’t cover Santana Moss?

  45. 45 Daniel said at 3:10 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Exactly what I was thinking. We have our #3 safety on their #1 receiver.

  46. 46 TommyLawlor said at 3:11 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Quit making fun of Moss. Isn’t his fault that Anderson is clearly better.

  47. 47 Baloophi said at 3:12 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

How many centuries has Moss been in the league, anyway? I wonder if he has moss growing on him….

  48. 48 ACViking said at 3:10 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Colt Anderson’s a GREAT special teamer.

He really shouldn’t be out there on defense. Not for lack of trying, though. Just not very good as a safety except in the box. And not even there today.

  49. 49 ACViking said at 3:12 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Can you hear the NFL Films music . . .

    me either

  50. 50 Baloophi said at 3:14 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

A couple more Skins touchdowns and then we can cue up McCoy’s next concussion…

  51. 51 ACViking said at 3:15 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Foles just made a more fundamentally perfect basketball pass than Iverson ever made

  52. 52 TommyLawlor said at 3:19 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

    Now that’s funny.

  53. 53 ACViking said at 3:18 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

The Eagles’ game plan was apparently to throw the ball today. ‘Skins run defense is 2nd or there abouts — but pass defense around 30th.

Only problem . . . Eagles O-line cannot pass-protect against the Jim Haslett 3-4 defense

  54. 54 TommyLawlor said at 3:20 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Strange day. Offense looks so good at times, so bad at others.

  55. 55 Iskar36 said at 3:21 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Strange? Sounds like what we have seen all season. A series or two where we look good, things are clicking, and then the rest of the game, look completely overmatched.

  56. 56 Anders said at 3:22 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

I dont like the play calling in this game

  57. 57 Baloophi said at 3:20 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Well, the plan seemed to be to run on the first possession (you know, the lone TD drive) and then pass for the rest of the game. Smart.

  58. 58 ACViking said at 3:21 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

When you’re up 7-3, you want to put your foot on the opponent’s throat . . . and being that the NFL is flag football (except for the Eagles), you throw the ball.

  59. 59 Baloophi said at 3:24 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

So you support the throw philosophy? My point was simply do what worked on the first drive… But that’s too simple for MM/AR…

  60. 60 ACViking said at 3:33 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

I was kidding. That’s always been AR’s approach . . . throw until you’re up by 21 then run. But if you’re trailing, throw the ball

  61. 61 Baloophi said at 3:36 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Gotcha. I don’t think I’ll miss the following play sequence when we bring in a new coach: 1st down – long pass (incomplete). 2nd down – draw (1 yard gain). 3rd down – sack.

  62. 62 ACViking said at 3:42 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

    hear, hear

  63. 63 Daniel said at 3:23 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

And Kurt Coleman bites on a playfake. This is why Reid needs to go. Same problems every week. No solutions for two years straight.

  64. 64 Iskar36 said at 3:24 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Wait, are you allowed to catch the ball on defense?

  65. 65 ACViking said at 3:27 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

  69. 69 Baloophi said at 3:37 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

    He is their kryptonite.

  70. 70 Iskar36 said at 3:37 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

  71. 71 Arby1 said at 6:51 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

  82. 82 Iskar36 said at 3:44 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Small complaint . . . with the clock running and your team in the hurry-up, don’t flip the ball 3-4 yards away from where you were tackled.

I’m happy with the overall outcome. I didn’t want them to win, but I wanted players to play well. Foles had a decent game. He missed some throws he should have made, but he also has shown some talent when it comes to pocket awareness and escapability. He certainly will make the decision for the next coach interesting when it comes to QB.

I actually had thought of that. Me likey.

  117. 117 phillychuck said at 4:24 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Andy implied in his press conference that his hand was an issue the entire 2nd half.

  118. 118 phillychuck said at 4:05 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

Foles threw a game-tying pass to the new TE who dropped a perfect throw. The ball that fell short to Maclin was fluttering and got caught in the wind…should have been a tighter spiral, probably due to bad hand or footwork. Should have thrown the ball to the guy who was crossing L-to-R early in the play. Played decently overall. Protected draft pick.

  119. 119 D3Keith said at 6:06 PM on December 23rd, 2012:

In all, about as good an outcome as one could have hoped for. Except for maybe the tying TD pass, go-ahead FG in OT and the defense blowing it. But this worked too.

I never thought I’d become an “I’m glad they didn’t win” guy. But here we are.

Sure, but all the same, I didn’t want him touching the ball with the game on the line… If only because a fumble would’ve given the green light to super-smug Billick…

I went into this game not caring if we won or not (in fact, I prefer the higher draft pick to the win). I wanted to see some of the young guys showing that they are improving and playing well. Brown gains experience in these games regardless of winning or loosing.

I wanted a win for Andy at home. And I’m sick of losing, particularly to division foes. Draft position is nice, but if you’re playing McCoy at all, then the goal is to win the game versus stay healthy/give rookies experience. Since they were trying to win the game then they might as well go for it…

What’s weird is that Foles threw it out of the end zone a few plays earlier… Not sure why he held the ball so long on the last play

How much were we down when we went for it on fourth down and 2 on the 50 in the 3rd quarter? Follow up: what did the Skins do with their possession? That one felt like a mistake at the time (versus the two attempts in the first quarter).
