WAS 13 , PHI 10 – 2nd Half
Posted: December 23rd, 2012 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 130 Comments »Lots to like today. Skins have only run for 48 yards. Skins have not had a scoring drive over 32 yards. Nick Foles has thrown for 157 yards. Shady McCoy looks good. The Eagles defense came up with a big 4th down stop early in the game.
And yet…the Eagles trail by 3.
Turnovers. 10 of the Skins points have come after turnovers. They haven’t had to punt the ball today. The Eagles are limiting the damage, but need to come up with some 3rd down stops…or some freaking takeaways.
RG3 is 8 of 13 today. Was 14-15 in the first meeting. The Eagles defense is playing much better.
Can we come up with a takeaway?
Theoretically, yes. And I’m going to predict that today is the day when the INT streak comes to an end. Kurt Coleman will come up with a pick.
As for the Eagles offense, screen passes aren’t working. Must move away from them. My original goal was 10 carries for each RB. Shady has 7. Bryce only 3. So much for that dream.
At least this is an entertaining game. Foles started and finished hot. Sloppy in between. Let’s see if he can work through his issues and play well the whole 2nd half.

I asked this on twitter, but who is the best tackling safety in the upcoming draft?
I would be happy with one that did not bite on play action and give up 50 yard touchdown passes
I’ve read Matt Elam is a very good tackler, but only stands 5 -10.
Not a gameday discussion.
I can’t say I am all that surprised with the rushing attempts. For me, until proven otherwise, AR can no longer use more than 1 back effectively.
T-Law:
27 called passes.
10 called runs.
Disappointing.
Are AR/MM conceding that this O-line cannot run-block?
I agree that we need more balance, but this WAS secondary is pretty bad.
I think that is giving AR/MM way to much credit. It implies we would have a balanced attack if we had a healthy oline, something that is almost never true about their offense.
That’s a BINGO!!!
I think AR/MM’s idea of a balanced attack is passes to the left *and* the right.
I can’t believe I’ve never heard that one before. Brilliant.
Used a lot of PA passes. Not real keen on the calls.
apparently the defense got that memo about draft picks
Bad D on that opening drive. Ugh.
Looks like the wheels are starting to fall off. That looked easy against our defense.
Our redzone offense is pathetic.
Must run the ball down there.
3rd & very long . . . and another screen.
Throw to the EZ . . . Reid went for it on 4th-1 on the first drive of the game.
Jeez
Nice cut by Celek there, he sees all the green shirts blocking on the right side and his instincts kick in – I must be needed to block on the left. Wait, whats this in my hand? …
Hahaha
They didn’t show a great angle, but that looks like a bad challenge for WAS. Even with the bad angle, it looked like a clear backwards pass.
Did look backward. Ball hit at the 8.
Depends, if the arms moves forward and they think it went backwards because he got hit, its an in completion.
And Mike Pereira remains 0 for the Universe.
It was a close one, I dont think you could 100% say he was throwing forward.
Intense explanation by Ed Hochuli, but it actually seemed closer than I thought. Still, an obvious fumble.
Re: Backward pass
For the past two years, those plays have resulted in TOs by the Eagles’ offense.
Like the batted-ball comment in the first half, the Eagles’ defense just doesn’t seem to get the bounces to create TOs
Is every Reynolds’ shotgun snap high and slow?
Reid got greidy there. Not good.
“greidy” – Not sure that was intentional, but it got me LOL
Yeah, and soon he’ll be freid.
He can NOT hold the ball that long on 4th down!
well, he also can’t throw it away.
dreadful O-line
And matching D-line…
It’s a shame. I’d really like to see Foles behind a group that can pass block. Hopefully the new coaching staff gives him a chance with JP and Todd.
dreadful run defense
The Redskins are punching the Eagles in the mouth.
That’s demoralizing. And depressing.
Yep.
Is this a home game? Definitely sounds like the crowd is rooting for the Redskins. That’s an upsetting sight/sound.
They’re rooting for the draft pick.
I understand rooting for the draft pick (I’m on that same boat), but I’m not rooting for the Eagles getting destroyed.
Article in the paper earlier this week about Eagles Season Tix Holders selling their tix on Stub-Hub to Skins fans
Wait, Colt Anderson couldn’t cover Santana Moss?
Exactly what I was thinking. We have our #3 safety on their #1 receiver.
Quit making fun of Moss. Isn’t his fault that Anderson is clearly better.
How many centuries has Moss been in the league, anyway? I wonder if he has moss growing on him….
Colt Anderson’s a GREAT special teamer.
He really shouldn’t be out there on defense. Not for lack of trying, though. Just not very good as a safety except in the box. And not even there today.
Can you hear the NFL Films music . . .
me either
A couple more Skins touchdowns and then we can cue up McCoy’s next concussion…
Foles just made a more fundamentally perfect basketball pass than Iverson ever made
Now that’s funny.
The Eagles’ game plan was apparently to throw the ball today. ‘Skins run defense is 2nd or there abouts — but pass defense around 30th.
Only problem . . . Eagles O-line cannot pass-protect against the Jim Haslett 3-4 defense
Strange day. Offense looks so good at times, so bad at others.
Strange? Sounds like what we have seen all season. A series or two where we look good, things are clicking, and then the rest of the game, look completely overmatched.
I dont like the play calling in this game
Well, the plan seemed to be to run on the first possession (you know, the lone TD drive) and then pass for the rest of the game. Smart.
When you’re up 7-3, you want to put your foot on the opponent’s throat . . . and being that the NFL is flag football (except for the Eagles), you throw the ball.
So you support the throw philosophy? My point was simply do what worked on the first drive… But that’s too simple for MM/AR…
I was kidding. That’s always been AR’s approach . . . throw until you’re up by 21 then run. But if you’re trailing, throw the ball
Gotcha. I don’t think I’ll miss the following play sequence when we bring in a new coach: 1st down – long pass (incomplete). 2nd down – draw (1 yard gain). 3rd down – sack.
hear, hear
And Kurt Coleman bites on a playfake. This is why Reid needs to go. Same problems every week. No solutions for two years straight.
Wait, are you allowed to catch the ball on defense?
Colt looked like Eagles punt returner Larry Marshall (1975-’77)
It’s kinda sad how Damaris Johnson has more heart than Maclin does right now.
Redskins can’t stop Dion!
He did get them last year in the season finale.
He is their kryptonite.
I really wish Dion was given more opportunities this year. He looks like he could be a solid back that is used as a second (or third in our case) option.
Wish I knew how he got himself in Reid’s doghouse other than that preseason arrest. Or was it just that BBrown made him irrelevant..?
Most discipline we’ve seen all year for this defense.
Babin would’ve jumped…
I totally disagree with you…………..He would have hit the QB late on 3rd down.
Ha! Then, “taunting.”
Hahaha
Jim Washburn just threw something at his TV.
But he threw it from a wide angle so it had more of a direct line.
zing!
A moral victory for the Eagles not jumping offside.
Juqua Parker . . . oh, we miss you.
Ok . . . now I can hear the NFL films music.
Wow. That is great awareness by Foles. Moving in the pocket. Making sure not to cross the line. Making a safe throw. Impressive play
That was Eli-esque.
I didn’t see turn his head at all . . . damn remarkable.
Lots of other QBs would have scrambled for 4 yards.
This Shady McCoy guy is kinda decent.
I say we keep him, might turn out to be a good player
T-Law:
Out of the 2-min warning . . . .
Now’s the time for that long pass
The Eagles haven’t gone downfield all game. (At least thrown it.)
Go max protect and take a shot at the EZ.
Looks like it’s casual Sunday in the broadcast booth…
Yea, definitely a bit awkward.
Re: McCoy
Small complaint . . . with the clock running and your team in the hurry-up, don’t flip the ball 3-4 yards away from where you were tackled.
Leave the ball there.
Yeah, but it’s just a few seconds… No way that would bite us in — oh, never mind.
The little things make great teams great. And not-great teams not. Good point.
Andy’s last time out at home… I’m getting a little misty…
John Facenda . . . I hear you teeing up the TD
Foles HAS to make that throw. That was there.
Maclin was on his knees before he even looked back for the ball.
While that was a bad throw, it’s on Maclin too.
Lousy.
10 sec runoff…lol
Well, that ticks the box for played pretty well and still lost.
Yep… Preserve our pick in a miserable draft year. Ugh.
Doesn’t that beat having a worse pick in a miserable draft year? 4-12, 5-11, 6-10 … what’s it matter?
Besides, as much as you might not like losing to the Redskins, you’d hate seeing the Cowboys win the division a jillion times more.
Complete BS call. But Foles should have thrown the ball about 5 seconds earlier.
Foles’ flutter-ball.
New TE drops the ball.
Foles misses new guy in the back of the EZ on last play
3 TDs missed on that drive.
We sure had our chances.
Moore would’ve been close to being stopped had he caught the ball…I’m sure Hochuli would’ve found a way to deny us the TD…
Best of both worlds. QB looks decent. D got come crucial stops. Retain draft position. We’ll look back on this loss and be thankful.
Very possible.
I’m happy with the overall outcome. I didn’t want them to win, but I wanted players to play well. Foles had a decent game. He missed some throws he should have made, but he also has shown some talent when it comes to pocket awareness and escapability. He certainly will make the decision for the next coach interesting when it comes to QB.
and the suckitude continues. Thank god we have Roseman to screw up our high draft pick,
T-Law:
What the hell is up with Foles’s throws? FLUTTER BALL to Maclin and it just died 3 yards in front of him.
Peyton Manning always throws flutter balls. But they get to the receiver.
UGHGHGHGHGGH!
Bad footwork
Was his hand an issue on that pass?
May have been.
Ok. I’ve stopped smashing my chair into the wall.
If I had any hair left to pull out I’d be doing it… Much to the chagrin of my in-laws.
Just think of our potential O-line next year. Peters, Todd, Mathis, Kelce, #1 pick (Jockel?).
I actually had thought of that. Me likey.
Andy implied in his press conference that his hand was an issue the entire 2nd half.
Foles threw a game-tying pass to the new TE who dropped a perfect throw. The ball that fell short to Maclin was fluttering and got caught in the wind…should have been a tighter spiral, probably due to bad hand or footwork. Should have thrown the ball to the guy who was crossing L-to-R early in the play. Played decently overall. Protected draft pick.
In all, about as good an outcome as one could have hoped for. Except for maybe the tying TD pass, go-ahead FG in OT and the defense blowing it. But this worked too.
I never thought I’d become an “I’m glad they didn’t win” guy. But here we are.
At the end of the game, McCoy with 13 carries, the rest of the backs with 5. I think I predicted 6 or less prior to the game…
I was also happy not to see Brown out there on the last drive…
Brown with only 4 rushes all game is a negative in my book. He should have gotten more touches, but we all know how AR struggles with mixing in two backs.
Sure, but all the same, I didn’t want him touching the ball with the game on the line… If only because a fumble would’ve given the green light to super-smug Billick…
I went into this game not caring if we won or not (in fact, I prefer the higher draft pick to the win). I wanted to see some of the young guys showing that they are improving and playing well. Brown gains experience in these games regardless of winning or loosing.
I wanted a win for Andy at home. And I’m sick of losing, particularly to division foes. Draft position is nice, but if you’re playing McCoy at all, then the goal is to win the game versus stay healthy/give rookies experience. Since they were trying to win the game then they might as well go for it…
But guys…the interception drought…IS OVER!!!!!!! I wish everybody could hear Merril Reese go berserk on that int. He had been counting how many quarters it’s been since that last Detroit int….had JUST got done saying, now it’s been 37 quarters since….INTERCEPTION COLT ANDERSON OMG OMG OMG HGKEHFGEJFGVJHFHJFJHE@#&*$#*YG$&*RGR&
hahaha. In his voice, that would have been awesome.
What’s weird is that Foles threw it out of the end zone a few plays earlier… Not sure why he held the ball so long on the last play
How much were we down when we went for it on fourth down and 2 on the 50 in the 3rd quarter? Follow up: what did the Skins do with their possession? That one felt like a mistake at the time (versus the two attempts in the first quarter).
