OTAs Underway, Quick Note on D

OTAs are underway and the media is there. Here are a few nuggets of interest.

OL so far is Peters – Watkins – Reynolds – Herremans – Kelly

OLBs are Connor Barwin and Trent Cole.

Safeties are Nate Allen and Patrick Chung.

We don’t know a lot about the defense, but an interesting report came out today about takeaways in college football. Guess who led the nation in takeaways over the last 4 years? Oregon, of course.

Kelly didn’t coach the defense at Oregon. He was hands-off. Still, he helped with things from an overall perspective. Kelly recruited the types of players he wanted and certainly had to talk a lot about the fact he wanted an aggressive, playmaking defense. The Ducks had 131 takeaways over the last 4 years. Oklahoma State was second with 130.

One thing you would certainly think would factor in is the fact Oregon played with a lead the vast majority of the time. That forced offenses to throw the ball to try to score and keep up with them. More passes equals more chances for sacks and interceptions.

It sounds like the Eagles cut Ronnie Cameron.

“Loved Wearing Green for the Eagles and I thank them for an opportunity of a lifetime, I wish them nothing but the best moving forward!”

UPDATE…

The Eagles did cut Cameron and WR DeMarco Sampson.  They signed former Oregon WR Will Murphy (6-2, 193) and DE Daryell Walker (6-6. 285) from Hampton. Both Murphy and Walker were tryout players.

I’ll put up a longer post today. I need to see/read more on practice before writing a long post.

It is exciting to get some football news.

Great stat on Kelly’s Oregon defense’s turnovers, which leads to . . .

This kind of data shows why I think you were dead on that Chip wanted to draft Dion Jordon.

I just hope the whole DJ v. LJ thing won’t ring in my head for the next decade the way the ’69 draft still does. In that year, though, the Eagles just bungled the pick. This year, they weren’t willing to pay the price.

Of course, DJ could turn out to be another Vernon Gohlston . . . though I doubt it.

It will be interesting to track Dion’s career vs Lane Johnson’s.

dolphins can’t franchise DJ forever lol…

We’re going to rue the day we cut DeMarco Simpson!

    Sampson.

    And yes on the rue-ing.

That was awesome in an 80’s scripted sit-com kind of way.

“We are going to rue the day we cut Simpson!”
    “Sampson.”
    “Whatever.”

Why keep Herremans on the RG?
If he’s not playing RT I would love to see him team up at LG with Peters again. They seemed to be working very good together as a Tackl-Guard-pairing.

  11. 11 James said at 1:36 PM on May 13th, 2013:

Evan Mathis is a better LG, and Herremans better at RG than RT it makes total sense.

  12. 12 Stephen Stempo said at 2:39 PM on May 13th, 2013:

Wasn’t the last time they were both on the same side sometime in the late Mesozoic? I mean in football years

  13. 13 RC5000 said at 6:43 PM on May 13th, 2013:

For one thing, Stoutland helped Warmack tremendously at Alabama and obviously knows OL with his line at Alabama so the last thing you should be commenting on is where Stoutland decides Mathis and Herremans should go.
But since you asked, Herremans has about 20 lbs. on Mathis so putting Mathis next to Peters and Herremans and Johnson on the right side is slightly more balanced.

So during Kelly’s press conference today Kelly was asked to evaluate a few players.. CB Marsh, LT Kelly, LT Johnson, & QB Berkley where the players that come to mind.. Each he really didn’t say anything positive or negative but really just explained its only been a few days dont read into who lines up with who..

But when he was asked about Berkley his answer was a lot different. He gave nothing but praise about Berkley and how he has picked up the offense and how his work ethnic is top notch.

Not saying Berkley is going to be the starting QB this year, but Kelly seems to be giving him a big voice of confidence going into everything.

I have to say, I know its early, but Im surprised its Allen over Phillips, Kelly over Johnson and Cole over Graham.

  20. 20 bentheimmigrant said at 4:06 PM on May 13th, 2013:

Is Johnson allowed to practice? He’s not under contract yet.

  21. 21 Anders said at 4:08 PM on May 13th, 2013:

He is, he was there (just saw it on a PE.com video). Its first a problem come TC
