Lane Johnson Signs

The Eagles signed OT Lane Johnson on Saturday night.

Great news. The #4 overall pick will report on time and get right to the business of being the Birds starting RT. I don’t think anyone saw him as Danny Watkins 2.0, but this will ease the minds of some worrisome fans.

Johnson played RT at Oklahoma in 2011. He spent time there during the Senior Bowl week and I thought he looked very natural there. He does have to adjust to life in the NFL. Johnson wasn’t given the starting job this spring, but did end up working with the #1 OL after the first couple of OTAs. The Eagles have high expectations for him.

The big issue for Johnson is technique. He has the size, strength and athleticism to be a Pro Bowl player. He has to learn the subtleties of the position. That makes it all the better that he’s going to be in camp on time. Every rep he gets will help him. Every chance OL coach Jeff Stoutland gets to work with Johnson will help him.

Johnson signed a 4-year deal and the Eagles did get their offset language in there.  Per Jeff McLane…

The Eagles have everyone signed and ready to go.

Playing the game of best case scenario, this OL could be scary good, especially in the run game. this will force defenses to play base, which will open up the passing game. Chip for president.

I love that this post is so brief that it could have gone on Eagles Blog, but Tommy knows it is very important to us, and so it gets the Blitz royal treatment…spot on Tommy

Great news on signing Lane! Can’t wait for Monday. Saw another article about some of the vets showing up for the rookie camp. All the QBs are expected and TE Casey. How is different than in years past? Do we normally have 6 vets at rookie camp?

  13. 13 Jack Waggoner said at 10:39 AM on July 21st, 2013:

not uncommon for QBs to show up early, though I’m not sure all 5 need to be there.

On the last article on TC; coincidence or cause and effect that the Eagles decline in the last 2 years goes hand in hand with vanilla camps?

The rules coming out of the new CBA may have affected some coaches’ plans more than others.

I don’t think that helped, but I would not count it as a major factor.
