Cuts Are In

Posted: August 31st, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 217 Comments »

Eagles threw us a couple of curveballs.

Gone:

RB Matt Tucker

WR Greg Salas

LB Chris McCoy

LB Travis Long

That means that Emil Igwenagu, Jeff Maehl and 6 CBs made it. The CBs include Jordan Poyer, Curtis Marsh and Brandon Hughes.

McCoy is the shocker. He played very well for most of the summer.

This is a very fluid situation and there will likely be changes in the next 3 days.

I’ll write up some thoughts a bit later. Howie Roseman meets with the media at 430pm and it will help to hear what he has to say in regard to the moves.

Emil beats out Harbor and Salas?? Go figure.

  2. 2 A_T_G said at 4:20 PM on August 31st, 2013:

I watched Meahl and wondered, but thought there was no way he would beat out the ST contributions of Sheppard.

  3. 3 Christopher Miller said at 4:23 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Is there really much difference between Salas and Maehl skill sets? Honest question…I thought both were basically possession receivers.

  4. 4 Arby1 said at 4:31 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Even if they were equal in terms of skill sets, I hate it when a guy gives it his all, performs really well over an entire camp and gets cut for the new guy who’s been with the team for just a week. #badhighschoolmemories

  5. 5 OregonDucker said at 6:05 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Only difference that I know is that Maehl catches everything thrown his way. He is a true clutch receiver.

I wish we could have kept Salas too. He has made some great plays in PS. Sorry to see him go.

Chip has a rep among coaches as being a great judge of talent and teambuilding. We will see in the NFL but I for one am not going to second guess his decisions prior to the season unfolding. But I really understand the cynicism of Eagles fans who fear they are being let down before the season begins. Too many disappointments over decades of promises – I get it and it sucks.

  6. 6 GEagle said at 6:33 PM on August 31st, 2013:

I like Salas…but I’m happy with Maehl being here…and I wouldn’t have complained if Casey Mathews remained even if I didn’t like it….but the mcCoy thing and the corners, it just makes me focus my disappoint, ent on The Ugly uckling, Casey Mathews..

out of all the Mathews Men that have Horsed in the NFL, we get stuck with friggin Casey…sigh

  7. 7 Mac said at 10:00 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Harbor would be great if he could catch passes

  8. 8 jamesbondage said at 4:12 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Can’t believe Matthews made the cut and McCoy didn’t… Is U or O the new BYU?

  9. 9 Arby1 said at 4:15 PM on August 31st, 2013:

    I agree. Matthews was awful.

  10. 10 jackpotsdad said at 4:22 PM on August 31st, 2013:

I too am disappointed with the McCoy cut, but before we declare this team the Ducks 2.0 or Spurrier v2, let’s find out more. Also, we’re talking about bubble players here. These are the second string not starters. I will say that keeping Maehl does make sense to me; the Matthews pick not so much.

  11. 11 RIP illa said at 4:49 PM on August 31st, 2013:

How was McCoy remotely close to being a bubble player? We only have 3 OLBs, as of now, and the kid had a great offseason!

  12. 12 GEagle said at 4:53 PM on August 31st, 2013:

    I’m not happy at all.
    ..
if you read my posts, I already expected “air Maehl” to make the team over Salas, but cutting McCoy aggrivates me. I won’t even be happy if he lands on ST…just aggrivating

  13. 13 RIP illa said at 4:58 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Yeah I’ve read them. I think there’s absolutely nothing, for people who are more defensive minded, to he real happy about. But hey that’s been the story of this whole offseason.

  14. 14 OregonDucker said at 5:55 PM on August 31st, 2013:

I suspect Chip has some prospects up his sleeve. Some commentators have said that McCoy did not perform well against 1s but did OK against 2s and 3s.

Let’s wait and see what happens tomorrow.

  15. 15 GEagle said at 6:00 PM on August 31st, 2013:

When did he get a chance to try and perform against 1’s? he played well and stood out in 3 of 4 games…and after Barwin he is our best drop OLB….Just a bad taste in my mouth man.
    ..
Thank God for Anthony SHOWTIME Pettis tonight, cause Ice Cube would not say “Today was a good day”.

  16. 16 RC5000 said at 5:05 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Maybe because he’s a 26 year old journeyman jag who’s never played.

  17. 17 RIP illa said at 5:14 PM on August 31st, 2013:

So the fact that he played well this offseason and that the team doesn’t have a viable option to him makes sense in your mind??? Got it. In Casey Matthews we trust. I’m not sure, but can somebody be a journeyman that never played in the league?

  18. 18 RC5000 said at 1:26 PM on September 1st, 2013:

He played 2nd and 3rd team mostly. You probably had no idea who he even was when they originally signed him. Your post was he wasn’t even close to the bubble.

  19. 19 RIP illa said at 1:41 PM on September 1st, 2013:

That’s my bad, cause I should have said how is even close to the bubble when he…! The fact that I had no idea of who he was when they signed him is completely irrelevant and ridiculous. After finding out we signed him I did a little research and then waited for TC reports and preseason. Which is all once again irrelevant, w/ the exception that he did well on TC, per reports, and in preseason, save the 3rd game. And I don’t care that he played 2nd or 3rd nor that he played mostly against 2nd or 3rd. He was supposed to be a backup! I don’t need him to set the world on fire and and take a starting spot…would be nice, but kinda ridiculous! We need depth on this team cause, as of now, our depth at a lot of positions is real shitty! So yeah when a good backup get cuts I react as if we had just cut a starter!

  20. 20 OregonDucker said at 5:57 PM on August 31st, 2013:

I don’t understand the Matthews decision either. I know Chip does not play favorites, he wants winners. So I am curious to see how this decision plays out.

  26. 26 RIP illa said at 5:01 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Definitely have a lot of thoughts on these cuts:

    1. Its not that McCoy got cut. He really only played well against back up players. But its the fact that Mathews made the team over him. Mathews didn’t even play well against BACK-UPS. It would not surprise me in the least if Mathews is cut for another waiver wire player.

    2. How is the Maehl-man on this team?? I thought Salas and Shepard both showed more in practices and games than this guy. Would not surprise me if he gets cut for another waiver wire player as well.

    3. Not that surprised that Harbor got cut..but why is the world is Igwenagu on the team?? Again, wouldn’t surprise me if he gets cut for anther waiver wire player.

    4. How did Hughes, Marsh, and Poyer all make the team?? Wouldn’t surprise me if 2/3 get cut before the weekend.

    5. Really disappointed to see Mathew Tucker cut. I knew it would be hard for him to make the team but he showed promise. Some RB hungry team will scoop him up in a hurry.

OVERALL: Not surprised by the guys who got cut, but more so the guys who didn’t (that should have been) cut. Although I anticipate a rapid amount of transactions for a team that lacks serious depth.

Trying to make sense of the two ex-Duck players kept on the roster:

Maehl – keeping him makes sense to me, and I predicted he’d sneak into the roster. He’s sure handed, a good blocker and has better than average size. I think he’ll be in the role they had intended for Clay Harbor, sort of a hybrid WR-TE. Doesn’t have the size to go toe to toe with defensive ends, but is probably more than adequate to block your defensive back or even linebackers.

Matthews – I have a harder time with this one, largely because IMO McCoy outplayed him. Based on my memory, and confirmed by Tommy’s DGRs – McCoy had good games against New England, Carolina and the Jets, with his sole bad game against JAX . Matthews had good games against New England, JAX, DNP against Carolina and didn’t play that well against the Jets.

I haven’t kept up with Casey’s performance in the NFL, but I get the impression it has been uneven at best. In Oregon, he was above average, and I was actually somewhat surprised he was even drafted. One thing he does do well (at least during his college career) is that he causes turnovers. He had a knack of causing fumbles and stripping the ball. It may be this intangible that Chip values…or it could be pure nepotism.

Finished 2nd among WRs in the 20-yard shuttle, and 1st both in the 60-yard shuttle, and 3-cone drill.

    Maehl ran a 6.42 3-cone drill — fastest since 2005.
    ______________

The 2011 WR class included: AJ Green, Julio Jones, Torrey Smith, Randall Cobb, Greg Little, Austin Pettis.

    ______________

Seems like Maehl has great short-area quickness . . . so maybe he’s the future in the slot. (It took that little guy from Tx-Tech a couple years to become the Brady’s favorite guy to miss the key SB catch from the slot.)
