Cuts Are In

Gone:
RB Matt Tucker
WR Greg Salas
LB Chris McCoy
LB Travis Long
That means that Emil Igwenagu, Jeff Maehl and 6 CBs made it. The CBs include Jordan Poyer, Curtis Marsh and Brandon Hughes.
McCoy is the shocker. He played very well for most of the summer.
This is a very fluid situation and there will likely be changes in the next 3 days.
I’ll write up some thoughts a bit later. Howie Roseman meets with the media at 430pm and it will help to hear what he has to say in regard to the moves.
_
Emil beats out Harbor and Salas?? Go figure.
I watched Meahl and wondered, but thought there was no way he would beat out the ST contributions of Sheppard.
Is there really much difference between Salas and Maehl skill sets? Honest question…I thought both were basically possession receivers.
Even if they were equal in terms of skill sets, I hate it when a guy gives it his all, performs really well over an entire camp and gets cut for the new guy who’s been with the team for just a week. #badhighschoolmemories
Only difference that I know is that Maehl catches everything thrown his way. He is a true clutch receiver.
I wish we could have kept Salas too. He has made some great plays in PS. Sorry to see him go.
Chip has a rep among coaches as being a great judge of talent and teambuilding. We will see in the NFL but I for one am not going to second guess his decisions prior to the season unfolding. But I really understand the cynicism of Eagles fans who fear they are being let down before the season begins. Too many disappointments over decades of promises – I get it and it sucks.
I like Salas…but I’m happy with Maehl being here…and I wouldn’t have complained if Casey Mathews remained even if I didn’t like it….but the mcCoy thing and the corners, it just makes me focus my disappoint, ent on The Ugly uckling, Casey Mathews..
…
out of all the Mathews Men that have Horsed in the NFL, we get stuck with friggin Casey…sigh
Harbor would be great if he could catch passes
Can’t believe Matthews made the cut and McCoy didn’t… Is U or O the new BYU?
I agree. Matthews was awful.
I too am disappointed with the McCoy cut, but before we declare this team the Ducks 2.0 or Spurrier v2, let’s find out more. Also, we’re talking about bubble players here. These are the second string not starters. I will say that keeping Maehl does make sense to me; the Matthews pick not so much.
How was McCoy remotely close to being a bubble player? We only have 3 OLBs, as of now, and the kid had a great offseason!
I’m not happy at all.
..
if you read my posts, I already expected “air Maehl” to make the team over Salas, but cutting McCoy aggrivates me. I won’t even be happy if he lands on ST…just aggrivating
Yeah I’ve read them. I think there’s absolutely nothing, for people who are more defensive minded, to he real happy about. But hey that’s been the story of this whole offseason.
I suspect Chip has some prospects up his sleeve. Some commentators have said that McCoy did not perform well against 1s but did OK against 2s and 3s.
Let’s wait and see what happens tomorrow.
When did he get a chance to try and perform against 1’s? he played well and stood out in 3 of 4 games…and after Barwin he is our best drop OLB….Just a bad taste in my mouth man.
..
Thank God for Anthony SHOWTIME Pettis tonight, cause Ice Cube would not say “Today was a good day”.
Maybe because he’s a 26 year old journeyman jag who’s never played.
So the fact that he played well this offseason and that the team doesn’t have a viable option to him makes sense in your mind??? Got it. In Casey Matthews we trust. I’m not sure, but can somebody be a journeyman that never played in the league?
He played 2nd and 3rd team mostly. You probably had no idea who he even was when they originally signed him. Your post was he wasn’t even close to the bubble.
That’s my bad, cause I should have said how is even close to the bubble when he…! The fact that I had no idea of who he was when they signed him is completely irrelevant and ridiculous. After finding out we signed him I did a little research and then waited for TC reports and preseason. Which is all once again irrelevant, w/ the exception that he did well on TC, per reports, and in preseason, save the 3rd game. And I don’t care that he played 2nd or 3rd nor that he played mostly against 2nd or 3rd. He was supposed to be a backup! I don’t need him to set the world on fire and and take a starting spot…would be nice, but kinda ridiculous! We need depth on this team cause, as of now, our depth at a lot of positions is real shitty! So yeah when a good backup get cuts I react as if we had just cut a starter!
I don’t understand the Matthews decision either. I know Chip does not play favorites, he wants winners. So I am curious to see how this decision plays out.
Surprised McCoy got cut
No idea why Emil is still on the team.
He’s hostile, mobile and versatile.
I don’t remember hearing his name called at all this preseason.
Shows us that pre-season games mean f=== all…
It’s kinda like they already had their minds made up of who stays and who goes, despite TC practices and preseason games.
Concussion, remember?
Yeah he dropped that pass also. 🙂
nice.
Lol
apparently, his blocking..
2 of the Eagle CBs have broken hands
They play CB because they can’t catch. Broken hands won’t interfere.
good one, Faker!
Wondering if McCoy cut is sign we are not ready personnel wise to commit to 3 4
I agree, to an extent. I could easily see them running the 4-3 Under this year, but Barwin would still need a backup.
I think they are going to run the 4-3u anyway…but as you pointed out, someone has to be able to play in space behind Barwin….No one can sit here Nd tell me that it should be Casey Mathews…
Nobody asked you Jeff!
This is exactly why no one asks you mcLane…because you are a worthless friggin idiot!….maybe he didn’t show enough for a 4 year Vet..but he showed enough for a young player that only has 1 real OLB…
Ugh
Sterling Moore cut by Cowboys
Translation: He cost too much money for his production.
The Birds moved training camp to Philly and gave him a new Asst Coach.
How much more change could you ask for?
Yeah, but they didn’t get him the new fire truck, did they?
nice play
Nice that the Eagles didn’t put the PC on line.
Why?
Follow-up . . . .
“So how do you do things now differently from before . . . besides you’re in charge?”
Reading Roseman’s quotes on Watkins, you’d think he liked the choice in 2011 — a lot.
So have we traded for an OLB yet?!!!
Dick Vermeil brought in 25 new players on a 46 man roster in ’76.
That’s turnover!
We might get there yet!
Indeed. That would be a good thing, IMO.
Matthews, a Duck, makes cut because he is good on ST, but Sheppard who is also good on ST gets cut in favor of another Duck; Sheppard was their best gunner and showed up on kick coverage; clearly, I disagree with cutting Shepard.
Re: OLB
Matthews has played OLB. Plus he’s an Oregon guy. VERSATILE
WIth Maehl and Matthews on the roster it makes me think that CK might be more (Oregan) biased than we thought…
Let’s see if Remington lands on the PS.
Doubtful.
But if yes, then I’ll be head-scratching.
Also I am more convinced than ever now that Dion Jordan would be wearing Eagles green, if it wasn’t for the Dolphins!
BINGO!!!!
Comment of the day . . . so far.
lane loves it here….He should send the Dolphins a thank you gift basket, every year right before the NFL draft….
Doesn’t mean he played them well…
I kid. Agree with you.
Absolutely disgusted that we cut McCoy…ruined my damn day….We have 3 OLBs which means there is another shoe that still has to drop, but it’s still dissapointing to lose a kid with so much potential. I don’t even want him on PS…I wanted him on the roster….it’s a joke to see Marsh here and McCoy gone…I know another OLB is on the way, but I doubt it will be someone notable, so I would have rather kept McCoy,…This sucks. I can count ATleast 10 Eagles I would much rather cut….these cuts have been dissapointing for me
A deal of DJ in the works?
Thanks for trying to cheer me up….but even Dion dreams won’t help right now….Not happy today
Cudos!
Just like I said…Imot one to toot my own horn lol Jk
Good call. And good to know Howie is already making excuses for less than stellar to poor play.
Thank you kind sir…Forget the clear Oregon favoritism, Salas had a good camp, but Maehl brought a lot more versatility, knowledge of the offense….I liked Salas as much as everyone, but I don’t have a problem with the Air Maehl move
We know Casey Matthews is great on special teams? Do we know that by how great they were last year on ST? He adds zero roster.
Can’t believe we have to spend another year with Marsh
Can’t believe we have to spend another year w/ Hughes!
Can’t believe we have to spend another year with BOTH!
marsh is so bad, that he makes me put up with Hughes…ATleast I have seen Hughes do something on ST every once in a while
Ask Tony Scheffler who he’d rather have gaurding him. Lol!
Marsh is terrible. He cannot play defense & he cannot play STs. All Howie said was “he’s a big guy who can run.” BS.
3rd round steal!
But they were not good . . . or did I miss something.
I wonder how long until they are good…
Are you being sarcastic or not? Not trying to start anything w/ you. Just really wondering.
maybe we’re speaking the same language.
I’m surprised both made the cut. From all I read, neither was progressing.
Ok. And yes we’re speaking the same language. Non of the reports on them were good coming out of camp. Just SMH right now. Figured we would have kept one if them due to the injuries, but to keep both…ugh!
Bingo
Wow…thanks for the updates. Howie is at least keeping me laughing for now!
Re: OLB emergency
How does VC at DT solve the OLB problem.
Not seeing the connection . . . unless Roseman meant the Eagles will go to a true 4-3.
Sounds more like garbage for the masses — Roseman’s being about as honest on that point as, oh idk, a politician on the impact of big contributors.
Just said VC could play some OLB.
Oh.
Not encouraging, though.
I stick to my politician’s answer theory
Agreed.
I thought we were all past the Howie conspiracy nonsense. What is he hiding? Why would he hide it? Conspiracy theories only work if there is an actual point to having a conspiracy.
Laeagle:
I don’t believe Roseman’s comments are part of a conspiracy. That would require two people.
I think he’s using “GM Speak,” that’s all.
Just as Kelly used “Coach-Speak” when he said Vick is his QB for this season.
As a lawyer — who’s used to lawyer-speak — I don’t begrudge him doing his job.
WHAT BOTHERS ME is the media’s general incapacity to press for answers with more precise questions.
Knew Air Maehl would make it…I don’t have a problem with this one
Definitely have a lot of thoughts on these cuts:
1. Its not that McCoy got cut. He really only played well against back up players. But its the fact that Mathews made the team over him. Mathews didn’t even play well against BACK-UPS. It would not surprise me in the least if Mathews is cut for another waiver wire player.
2. How is the Maehl-man on this team?? I thought Salas and Shepard both showed more in practices and games than this guy. Would not surprise me if he gets cut for another waiver wire player as well.
3. Not that surprised that Harbor got cut..but why is the world is Igwenagu on the team?? Again, wouldn’t surprise me if he gets cut for anther waiver wire player.
4. How did Hughes, Marsh, and Poyer all make the team?? Wouldn’t surprise me if 2/3 get cut before the weekend.
5. Really disappointed to see Mathew Tucker cut. I knew it would be hard for him to make the team but he showed promise. Some RB hungry team will scoop him up in a hurry.
OVERALL: Not surprised by the guys who got cut, but more so the guys who didn’t (that should have been) cut. Although I anticipate a rapid amount of transactions for a team that lacks serious depth.
McCoy is a backup…who is he supposed to play well against when all he’s playing against is backups?
I agree. I would have kept him. However, I can see the eagles cutting him to keep another BETTER player. Mathews was NOT a better player.
Agreed
Kelly lied to his players and to the fans. The guys who played well didn’t get the jobs, the veterans who suck were kept despite being basically invisible during pre-season. How can Hughes, Marsh, Matthews, and Igwenagu still be on the team? Really silly cutting McCoy if he doesn’t make it through to the PS.
Screw the PS…mcCoy should be on the roster and dressing for games!!
Agreed.
Re: Igwana at TE
Could be limited time — until Casey 100%. Or 90%
I’ll take that comment by Roseman on E-Igwana to the bank after he’s still on the roster on Week 16
Did I miss Emil making plays in practice and in games? I know he caught one pass from Vick but that was more Vick’s throw. Scratching my head.
I havnt really watched him, but reports have said he made it because of his blocking and while people have said Iggy dropped a lot of balls in practice, he had the best hands in pre season games
Cut Soapy — get younger.
Soapy’s all washed up?? (sorry, couldn’t resist.)
No apology necessary. When the ball’s on the ground, you pick it up and run with it.
Maybe McCoy was not a good special teams guy.
Any thoughts on this point?
possibility. Mathews is better in that area.
Re: Best Reported Line by Roseman
Vinny Curry — who’s added about 20 pounds or so — is now an emergency OLB.
Can’t take much of what he, Roseman, says seriously after that.
Yeah, he’s got something up his sleeve, but in typical fashion, we won’t know what it is until it’s done.
God I hope so.
Part of what Rosenman is doing in this PC is lying so that other teams don’t know who they’re after. Nobody thinks Vinny Curry will play any OLB this year.
before TC I thought he would be one of those guys moved to OLB, but not since
I don’t think Roseman needs to lie.
The Eagles have 3 OLBs. Only 1 can actually play the position.
I’ve been tirelessly stating this exact point. The STUDS in a 3-4 are OLBs. The Eagles have one that is functional, at times above average. Defense has a chance to be historically bad. (Maybe not 2012 Saints..but close.)
We’ve known this for a long time. It’s not news on cutdown day. Chris McCoy isn’t a stud.
Looked a lot like Cameron Wake against the Jets.
Against the Jets’ 3rd stringers.
I’m just having some fun.
I know you are. I just think people are overreacting to the McCoy cut a little.
I think you’re right.
He’s knocked around Canada and two NFL practice squads — including Houston.
Not a huge loss, I hope.
I still assume special teams was an issue.
I think run defense was an issue.
May be. Didn’t focus on him enough during Exhibition season.
Reminds me of when we went to the Wide 9…..with no MLB!
Sure he’s going to lie… he’s not going to tell you we have a crap sandwich
Re: C-McCoy
Roseman called that move “a tough one”.
Did the reporters let him off the hook after that answer? No “what made the difference,” or “where did he fall short,” or why is “Matthews still here?”
T-Law:
Are there any Oregon 3-4 OLBs who played for Kelly who’ve been cut in the past couple days?
I am just doing my Fantasy Football Draft as I write. The Eagles D hasn’t been picked as of now, and we’re in round 9. No surprise though…
Re: Defense
No player was more “Philadelphia” than Trent Cole.
But, geez, he’s playing slow.
Why not put Graham out there? What the hell.
Re: Maehl v. Salas
I thought Salas played some slot, as well as on the outside.
And I’d like to see Maehl make those catches that Salas did.
David Bass, Donaty Mach are 2 OLB/DE players i hope Eagles have a look at
IMO there will be more roster moves this weekend.
How many?
What’s the over?
2.5
I think 3 moves, so I’ll take the over
And I bet a cheeky tenner that Hughes, Matthews and Marsh won’t be on the 53 roster come tomorrow lunch time.
After tomorrow at 4PM they can IR guys with less than 4 years service without exposing them to waivers first.
Luckily I didn’t get a jump on trying to sell Dion Jordan Eagles Jerseys
Trying to make sense of the two ex-Duck players kept on the roster:
Maehl – keeping him makes sense to me, and I predicted he’d sneak into the roster. He’s sure handed, a good blocker and has better than average size. I think he’ll be in the role they had intended for Clay Harbor, sort of a hybrid WR-TE. Doesn’t have the size to go toe to toe with defensive ends, but is probably more than adequate to block your defensive back or even linebackers.
Matthews – I have a harder time with this one, largely because IMO McCoy outplayed him. Based on my memory, and confirmed by Tommy’s DGRs – McCoy had good games against New England, Carolina and the Jets, with his sole bad game against JAX . Matthews had good games against New England, JAX, DNP against Carolina and didn’t play that well against the Jets.
I haven’t kept up with Casey’s performance in the NFL, but I get the impression it has been uneven at best. In Oregon, he was above average, and I was actually somewhat surprised he was even drafted. One thing he does do well (at least during his college career) is that he causes turnovers. He had a knack of causing fumbles and stripping the ball. It may be this intangible that Chip values…or it could be pure nepotism.
Just thought you’d like to get a perspective of someone who watched both players when they both at UO.
Appreciated
Breaking news. Alabama has the best defense in the country.
Stanford might have something to say abut that
More breaking news.
Haha Alabama looked like the Eagles and it was a read option play…VT just ran the read option and scored a long TD run right up the middle.
saw that
Of course I just said they had the best defense in the country too so I thought it was funny Riddick said that.
No, boys cut Demetress Bell!
He was locked in a close battle with Grey Trash Can #2.
Don’t disrespect Grey Trash Can #2 like that.
He’s been summering in the Atcama desert in Peru.
Re: Jeff Maehl
Here’s how the 6’1 185lbs Maehl did at the 2011 Combine:
40-time: 4.62
Finished 2nd among WRs in the 20-yard shuttle, and 1st both in the 60-yard shuttle, and 3-cone drill.
Maehl ran a 6.42 3-cone drill — fastest since 2005.
______________
The 2011 WR class included: AJ Green, Julio Jones, Torrey Smith, Randall Cobb, Greg Little, Austin Pettis.
______________
Seems like Maehl has great short-area quickness . . . so maybe he’s the future in the slot. (It took that little guy from Tx-Tech a couple years to become the Brady’s favorite guy to miss the key SB catch from the slot.)
Also Maehl had really good blocking against the Jags and was clearly the best WR of Salas, Sheppard and him against the Jets. He was the only guy that got open.
I have no problem w/ the decision. Shepard’s way too raw except as a ST chaser.
QUESTION: Does Maehl make this team if Maclin and Benn aren’t hurt?
Does Maehl even get traded to the Birds sans those injuries?
I’d like to see him on the field — not in the press box on Sundays.
So next year, he’s the new slot guy. Love Avant — but slow and not a RZ producer.
No way Maehl makes this team if either Maclin or Benn are healthy
Really are you sure? lol Maclin is better than Maehl.
Maclin is pretty darn good. Benn has that size that Chip loves. Just because Chip looks like a UO homer doesn’t make him dumb.
Sorry I was being sarcastic. I agree with your last statement.
Only if Avant’s cut, maybe? Or — with both a healthy Maclin and Benn (unusual, yes) — Cooper doesn’t survive Concert-gate
No kidding, really?
Fun Fake Fact: Jeff Maehl’s wife is named Fiona, and is known as “Fi Maehl”
that’s really great. long day
QB Rivers calling lots of max-protect?
heh
FYI: Johnny Football is a Jackass!!!
…
Mariotta who I have never once acknowledged, is a MONSTER!
Mariota needs to hit the gym though. He has a great arm, is accurate,is both quick and fast, and have all the great QB intangibles. However, he does not have the NFL body…he’s like 6’4″ 212 lbs. He’ll have to put on at least 10-15 lbs…he’s really scrawny.
Correctable…
But is Mariotta an accurate passer? The Oregon system is very forgiving that way.
In the NFL, will the “Chipper System” be as forgiving?
One thing for sure, Mariotta is damn fast with nice pocket presence. And if he is accuarte, and has an NFL arm, wouldn’t he be a Top 5 pick? Out of the Eagles’ reach, save a blockbuster trade up?
Can confirm he’s very accurate, and he’s never had stellar receivers either. He threw 32 TDs to 6 INTs as a redshirt freshman last year. He’s a top 5 pick *if* he can get build up his body to take NFL hits.
I’d love to see that kid stay in green.
He performs best in GREEN!!
Josh Huff is really good, but I would still love Mariota next draft
/edit, btw Im such a big fan that I would consider Mariota over Clowney consider the importants of QB
Huff has gotten better sure. But it’s not like what Barkley had with Marquis Lee, Robert Woods and Alogolor.
However to be fair, having Lylerla and DAT to throw to isn’t shabby.
All good points…I guess our only saving grace would be that if guys have good years it can be a stacked draft class, pushing him back a little…with Dion getting stolen from out chips nose, I wonder if he will want to be much more agressive next year, think about trying up to get his guys instead of risking them being embezzled away like Jordan was.
…
You guys see how Johnny Football acted today? What a Clown!!! I hope someone crushes him!
I got 16 injured, scrub backup corners, 8 Lepurs playing safety: youngbuck, sissy, petite Coleman, dopey, sneezy, sleepy…..and I can’t get 1 backup natural OLB?
Thought you were about to write out a 16 injured scubs, 8 Lepurs playing safety . . .and a partridge in a pear tree.
Where did La Confora get that info?
If true, why wouldn’t the Eagles have moved Watkins to LG when Herremanns was moved out the RT in 2011? Yes, it was late in TC. But so what. Save the 1st rounder.
Good luck to New England if he lands there. If anyone can get the guy to play, it’ll be the warm and fuzzy Belicheck. And his very good OL coach, Dante Scarnecchia.
The thing is, if Watkins is a natural LG and a bad fit for RG, why would the Pats sign him when they got a pro bowl LG?
because they didnt draft him in the 1st round n probably wont be paying him much so its okay for them to sign him as a back up LG
Evan Mathis >>> Danny Watkins.
True.
But at the time, Mathis was just a guy and Watkins was a big investment.
True. 😉
beats me where La Canfora came up with that
Spare me LaCONshithead just for today. it’s too much. Don’t kick me when I’m down lol..JK 😉
I said the same thing about Watkins playing LG.. Its like a left hand right hand thing which you feel more comfortable at.. He played LT at Baylor if im not mistaken so sliding one spot in to LG would be easier than a switch to the right side
Patterson made the Giants roster
Did both Jenkins and Patterson make it?
yep
The Vikings cut Stephen Burton, who fits many of Chip Kelly’s preferences at WR. One of those people whose raw physical talent hasn’t fully translated to the field.
Incidentally, I’m enjoying all the eggs on the faces of the Webb haters, just now.
It’s like with Chris McCoy. Talent is talent is talent. There is a bunch of politics involved, and I suppose Matthews is one of those political choices–but it’s still a pretty fringe consideration compared to put-together talent and scheme fit.
Actually, one further comment…The Vikes must be really confident in how Greg Childs is looking when he returns. Five wide receivers is too few when one of them is the emergency rip-cord on having a pretty boy at QB.
T-Law:
Where ever you are . . . and I know you’re there . . . thanks for turning the asylum over to the inmates.
Been a lot of fun.
Coaches do seem to have pet players, like Reno Mahe and Chad Hall were to Reid. And it seems that Kelly has his pet players as well.
