PS#2 – CAR at PHI – Game Thread

Posted: August 15th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 229 Comments »

One bit of bad news today. OLB Phillip Hunt tore his ACL. It actually sounds like the injury may have happened in the last game, but it was officially confirmed today. Just a partial tear, but I would think that ends his season. Tough break for Hunt.

Let’s hope the Eagles play better tonight than last week. We want sustained drives on offense and the starting defense needs to get stops. Better hitting and tackling is needed on both sides of the ball. The Pats were more physical last week. That needs to change.

C’mon Eagles…give us a good game.

  • babapsu

Is it too early to blame the ACL’s on “The Curse of Lehigh”?

    • TommyLawlor

      Yes.

  • babapsu

Is it too early to blame the ACL’s on “The Curse of Lehigh”??

    • TommyLawlor

      No.

      • babapsu

Come on. The pic makes up for my ineptitude, no??

  • ACViking

T-Law . . . Would you’d also agree that *MAYBE* the “Curse of Lehigh” is the culprit for the ACLs. Yes?

  • SteveH

Hopefully we see more uptempo stuff tonight, super curious to see that at full speed.

  • Corry

I just want to see the defense get better, even if it’s just a little bit better. Got to see some progress.

  • ACViking

    T-Law:

The Eagles have come out in White at home.

Do you think that’s the plan this season . . . going classic Cowboys on us?

  • Crus57

Don’t forget, if you’re trying to match a number to a name: http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/roster.html?sort_by=2 and click on the # heading

  • SteveH

    yuck, Ginn WIDE open.

  • SteveH

    #24 got burned? looks familiar.

  • Corry

Cary Williams and Steve Smith going at it? Shocking.

    • SteveH

Hah! who called that in the previous thread? someone called it.

      • GEagle

        media mike

  • Ben Hert

    Good tackling thus far.

  • Corry

That looked like better defense there.

    • SteveH

Helps when you’re not playing the Patriots :p

  • Ben Hert

D looking good. Why are we playing so soft on the outside?

  • Ben Hert

What kind of playcall was that backed up like that?

  • GermanEagle

i really don’t wanna see Nate Allen on the field any more, ever again!

  • Corry

Interesting that Polk is the first off the bench again.

  • Flyin

    that was nice.

  • Corry

We’ve had the ball for over 50% of the first quarter. Wow.

  • SteveH

Foles making plays, it really seems like its going to be Vick’s big play ability versus Foles’ ball control.

    • shah8

ball control is not a viable offense, and so far, this is what Jaws is talking about as far as unsustainable offense is… Need more downfield throws, like ten yards and more. What’s really good is the run blocking.

      • shah8

jesus, I thought Foles would have taken the stupid sack!

    • GermanEagle

      U sure?!

  • Ben Hert

Damn you Foles! Someone please suck so I don’t feel so bad about having to choose a QB.

    • Crus57

If that is the result, please don’t say that again ;)

      • Ben Hert

Oh no…now I feel even worse!

  • Flyin

    That was horrible!!!

    • bdbd20

It was bad, but he was trying to throw it away. Good decision. Bad execution.

      • Flyin

That’s what I thought he was trying.

  • Corry

    Ugh. Shades of 2011-2012

  • Mac

Saw Casey Matthews in a tshirt to start the game. It sure looks good for avant tonight.

  • McNabbulousness

not thrilled with the int, but I’m loving the energy/pace of the offense

  • SteveH

Yikes, thats not good for Foles.

    • TommyLawlor

      Cannot make that throw. Terrible.

      • Crus57

By the time he decided to throw it away, the defender was too close. Inexperience at the NFL level still, maybe?

  • Flyin

    TFL woohoo!!!

  • Corry

Looks like the defense came to play tonight.

  • Corry

I’m blown away by how much better the special teams looks. Like night and day.

    • TommyLawlor

      Absolutely.

    • SteveH

      feels good doesn’t it?

      • Corry

Yes it does. You don’t pay too much attention to ST until your team sucks at it for a few years.

  • GermanEagle

    That’s 50 push ups…!

    • TommyLawlor

That would have been a really tough INT, but the rules say he owes us the push-ups.

  • shah8

Take a look at that first step by Damaris Johnson!

    • TommyLawlor

      So quick. Good burst.

  • ACViking

    Hey, T-Law:

    What’s Foles’ problem with the snaps . . . he’s bobbled two?

    • TommyLawlor

Gotta check the tape. Not sure what’s up with that.

      • shah8

first was a bad snap, I think. Second he wasn’t looking.

        • ACViking

          thanks

    • GEagle

Marcus Vick greased the balls up…sabatoging Foles..isn’t it obvious? :)

  • ACViking

    T-Law:

    Quick defense question.

Is the Eagles’ front in a undershift?

    • Corry

I’m not sure, but the gaping highway between Cole and Cox isn’t there this week.

  • McNabbulousness

    Shady just broke my ankles!

  • Flyin

Who says Foles isn’t a running QB

    • McNabbulousness

      Foles just broke my brain!

      • Flyin

        Hahahaha

  • Corry

Keuchly will never live that down.

  • GermanEagle

That TD drive was all Shady. Those cuts were sick!

    • TommyLawlor

      He is special.

      • ACViking

Gale Sayers . . . without the straight speed

        • Corry

I was going to say Barry Sanders with that ankle breaking ability.

          • ACViking

            generational thing.

        • GermanEagle

          More like Barry Sanders.

  • GEagle

Let’s see Tom Brady do that! Lol

  • SteveH

    Nick Foles: track star?

  • shah8

At this point, I don’t care about the QBs. That run blocking is murdering the Panthers. OMG. We really won’t need to throw much if it’s like that in the regular season.

    • SteveH

Shady making sick cuts too, what a stud.

      • shah8

Those sick cuts are there because of what the guys up front are doing.

    • TommyLawlor

      Fun to watch.

      • GEagle

        Lane is impressive so far

    • bdbd20

Just imagine what they’re gonna do with a healthy JP.

      • GEagle

        Geez…that’s a scary thought

  • Crus57

Now put Shady in bubble wrap for another week.

    • SteveH

Vacuum seal him and store him in the back.

    • McNabbulousness

cryogenically freeze him for safe measure, we have the technology…right?

      • Chippah

He’ll take too long to thaw for the skins

        • Mike

          Then freeze just his head!

  • ACViking

    Re: McCoy

No reason McCoy should take another snap.

Not on any field in Philadelphia

  • SteveH

breakdown in coverages deja vu from last year.

  • Flyin

Any idea of what coverages eagles are using?

    • SteveH

      the broken kind.

      • Flyin

        some type of prevent?

    • Corry

Looks like a really soft zone.

      • Chippah

        that’s what she said?

  • GermanEagle

Chung our best tackler. And it’s not even close.

  • Mac

Not sure about Wang, but I’m liking Chung tonight

  • Jernst

Cary Williams bringing that swagger back to Philly defense by getting stiff armed and run over for a first down and then pushing the guy who just embarrassed him in the back, after the whistle, while out of bounds…

    • GEagle

Relax, he played like 5 days since febuary lol…

Could you ever imagine NNamdi or DRC not backing down to Steve smith?

      • Jernst

haha…true at least he has a desire to be tough and stick his nose in it. I’m pretty sure Nnamdi and DRC were Eunuchs

        • GEagle

          bwahahahahaha the Lords of whispers

  • Crus57

I’m going to need the whole preseason to get used to seeing an eagles DB wearing #23 running towards the ball and making a tackle.

    • Jernst

      haha

    • GEagle

Haha. You dudes are making me lol tonigh

    • TommyLawlor

      Yes!

  • SteveH

Glad to see the D hold there.

    • GEagle

They aren’t as bad as last week…shocker.

  • Jernst

D still looks bad, but so much better than a week ago…it’s amazing what not playing against Tom Brady can do for a defense.

  • GEagle

Get shady out of the game please

  • Jernst

dear god get mccoy off the field

  • ACViking

taking McCoy out now wouldn’t be fair to Vick

    • Chippah

still not worth the injury risk

      • ACViking

        same’s true about the O-line.

        No right answer

        • Chippah

Fair. But the o-line you lose one of five. Shady is one of the top 5 backs in the league

        • GEagle

I got the answer!!! Punt the ball away on first down, and just keep the D on the field the rest of the night lol

          • Chippah

That’d make Jimmy Bama happy. MOAR PUNTING !1!!!!

    • Jernst

Could not care less about that. Foles didn’t play with the 1’s at all last week. So not worth the injury.

    • GEagle

did Foles get Desean last week? Did Foles Not just hand the ball off to Polk?….Shady is more important to me than this qb battle

      • ACViking

        give me a break. 2nd game . . .

  • Jernst

I know it hasn’t been a huge sample size of plays, but Barbre is a legitimate looking LT

    • GEagle

You just noticed that awesome block he had too didn’t you? He is impressive tonight for sure

      • Jernst

        sure did

    • bdbd20

Amazing what running the ball does for the confidence of an O-line

  • Jernst

Vick looks as comfortable in the pocket as I’ve ever seen him

    • TommyLawlor

      It truly is amazing.

  • Jernst

Polk also looks like he’s running with more authority than last week…although he fumbles as I type this soooooo….

    • TommyLawlor

Looks good. Last week might have been caught up in the moment.

That fumble is bad. Can’t do that.

  • GermanEagle

No points on this drive, but Vick looks great (again).

    • SteveH

Vick’s looking sharp. Outplaying Foles again tonight I’d say.

      • bdbd20

Actually, I thought Foles looked really good. If he could have thrown the ball away, we may have 14 on the board.

        • GEagle

Some really accurate short and intermediate passing..maneuvered well, just needs to clean his game up

        • Neil

Yeah, but it’s worrisome how he attempts NOTHING downfield. And then he underthrows a throwaway for a pick. Would Vick ever underthrow a throwaway?

          • phillychuck

His arm was hit at the elbow on the throwaway.

          • Neil

            Interesting.

        • SteveH

You can’t take that INT away though, its all part of the evaluation.

  • SteveH

Sigh, shades of last year, 2 turnovers already.

  • GEagle

Kendrick looked like he was shot out of a cannon

  • Chippah

Chip must be having an aneurysm with these turnovers

  • Mac

    Cam’s first third down conversion…

  • Jernst

Wow so nice to see the other teams WR actually fearful to go across the middle

    • TommyLawlor

      Doesn’t happen often.

  • Corry

hey look! One of our safeties made a WR alligator arm a pass!

  • GEagle

Why didn’t Wolff start tonight with Chunger?

  • Tom

Looks like Vick isn’t reading the ends as well as Foles. Tape would help check that though.

  • SteveH

Kendricks playing a great game, good to see.

  • Steag209

    I already like Chung

    • GEagle

In a preseason game and a half, he might already be the best safety we seen since Dawkins….geez we have been pathetic for too long. gGet Em Chunger!!! Heat seeking missile that ish!!

  • SteveH

Fletcher good coverage always it seems but they still making catches. Unfortunate.

  • Jernst

Can someone remind me what Nate Allen does well again…I’m just not seeing it.

    • GEagle

He is good at keeping Wolff on the bench…sorry, I have Nothing!!!

    • Corry

he puts his helmet on the right way.

  • GEagle

Look at Clifton movin out there

  • SteveH

Hah, Geathers swallowed up Williams there. Also, his uncle is named Jumpy Geathers? lol!

    • Jernst

      haha

  • Jernst

I’m wondering what the “science” behind wearing white jerseys is…

    • Crus57

It’s still summer, white reflects heat better?

      • Neil

        This.

  • SteveH

Fletcher good coverage again. I like Fletcher, and at least Williams sticks his nose in there in the running game.

  • Tom

Is it just me, or is Vick handing off when he should keep it. Shady hasn’t had much room. Is he not reading the ends corrrectly?

    • Jernst

I’d have to go back and watch the first drive again, but I think it’s you. The play calls for Vick to hand off unless he literally can’t because the end is crashing so hard. So, the right read 90% of the time is to hand off. They also might be scraping the LB over the crashing end to defend against a Vick scramble. Again, not sure of that, would have to rewatch tape.

  • Tom

It was noticeable when Foles had the helm that he was reading the play well. I just don’t see it with Vick.

  • Ark87

2 minute drill, this is exactly what i want to see from Vick in this offense

    • SteveH

      yes.

  • Chippah

Apparently Jumpy Geathers is one of the best pass rushers of all time? I know you like hyperbole but come on Baldinger.

    • Jernst

      haha…so amazing

    • Jernst

You, of course, remember world famous, world renowned pass rusher and NFL Hall of Famer Jumpy Geathers, right? What self respecting football fan can’t recall his storied career?

      • Chippah

I still tell stories about his feats around the campfire

  • SteveH

    DSJ making people look stupid.

  • Ark87

    so…much..athleticism, gifted human being

  • Corry

If Vick can walk the offense down the field AND give you the big scoring plays, he’s your starting QB. Foles is OK, but until i see him actually throw the ball downfield, i think he just limits the offense too much.

    • bdbd20

I do agree that Vick gives the offense that big play element. The question always has been executing the simple plays. Nick seems very comfortable running the Oregon spread attack.

      • Corry

yeah, that’s why I want to see Vick give the offense a good extended drive. He also must stop putting himself in harms way.

      • Ark87

shush, you talk about the big play element for just 1 sec and vick gets up a tad slower than you like, then DJax is probing his toe gingerly

    • Ark87

Vick playing smart football with the gifts he has can bench a lot of people in this league. If he is back in form he could have a heck of year. Could. Defenses are pretty vanilla here, for the past few years they seemed to have him pegged

      • shah8

A lot of what happened was on Reid, he really just had to run more.

    • Jernst

I missed the first few minutes of the game, but I honestly haven’t seen Foles throw the ball more than 10 yards down field all preseason. The only time I’ve seen him attempt it was when he tried to throw it out of the back of the endzone from the 15 yard line and the ball didn’t make it.

  • SteveH

oh wow… Baldy with the perv laugh after the chick shows the clutches.

  • SteveH

    Vick!!!! SLIDE!!!!

  • SteveH

    Vick gonna get hurt. Jesus.

  • GermanEagle

The QB competition should be over. Let’s have Vick play with the starters the first half in the third pre-season game so we will have a proper rehearsal.

  • Chippah

OK, we get it. Shady is awesome. Now put him on ice.

    • matthew Verhoog

It was only fair to give Vick Shady, when Foles had Him, to have a fair QB competition

      • Jernst

couldn’t care less about that…not worth a McCoy injury

        • Chippah

          agreed

        • matthew Verhoog

          I agree

  • GEagle

Tom, you gotta lovat ST tackle from a small undrafted free agent wideout..

benny Logan just keeps showing up!

  • Tumtum

Russle Shepard. We might have a winner. ST gunner at least.

  • ACViking

If VIck’s the guy . . . then the Eagles need to think about getting a franchise QB in the next 2-3 years — on the theory that Vick’s gone after 2013.

    • deg0ey

Agreed. I was really hoping that Foles would step it up this summer so that wasn’t as much an issue, but hey, just ’cause Vick looks like the starter to begin the season doesn’t mean it’ll finish up that way.

      • ACViking

I thought about mentioning that . . . but life moves too fast

  • livingonapear

Vick won the job tonight. Foles woulda done a bang up job, but you go with the guy who wins it, and that’s Vick. Having said all that, it’s good there was a real competition, I think not letting Vick get too comfortable was a good thing.

  • matthew Verhoog

    Contract extension?

  • GEagle

Please Billy Davis…don’t ever blitz Coleman again..thanks

    • Chippah

here’s hoping he gets cut so it’s not even an option.

      • GEagle

Id rather get Vince Papale out of retirement then see Coleman on the Eagles

  • Jernst

I’ve never seen a QB sacked by his hand

    • SteveH

was good strength to pull him down.

      • Jernst

yea that was incredible. Not trying to give Vick flack for it…that defensive end has jaws of life type strength in his grip to grab Vicks right hand, hold on and throw him to the ground using just that

    • Ark87

ditto, it was an odd sight, even vick looked a bit surprised

  • SteveH

DSJ for starting safety. Cut Nate Allen.

  • Ark87

look at DJax with the take down

    • TommyLawlor

      2-way player…WR / FS?

      • Ark87

Nothing like upgrading the secondary’s physicality level with a ~170 lb WR.

All jokes aside, atleast Chung looks good

  • Eagles1991

    Cut Nate Allen now please

    • Jernst

Tommy keeps telling me to be patient and that Nate has flashed serious potential and might put it all together…I just don’t see it. He looks scared to be on a pro field.

  • Jernst

DeSean’s toe injury is worrisome. Toe injuries get overlooked as minor, but can straight up end careers.

    • Jernst

DeSean minus his speed isn’t much of a threat anymore

    • Flyin

      Who reported this?

      • Anders

he hurt his toe on Vick’s run to the 1 yard line

      • Jernst

he’s had a toe injury the last few days. It’s been reported a few times, although I don’t have the report handy. And, then was limping those last two drives.

        • Flyin

Thanks. I saw him limping but had no idea the reason.

    • McNabbulousness

yep, deion had a hell of a time with his big toe a while back.

      • Jernst

yep, LaDanian Tomlinson went from 1500 yard back to role player for the Jets at the age of 29 after a big toe injury and never looked the same again.

  • D3FB

How does Kendrick’s not have a no snowboarding clause in his contract?

    • Jernst

it amazes me how many of these players do things in the off season that could end their career with a senseless injury

    • Ark87

I had to keep reminding myself it’s all in the past and he still has healthy knees during every cut

  • GEagle

    nice block my ertz..

    salas just produces

  • GEagle

    Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeertz!!!

    • McNabbulousness

only a matter of tim before he gets an endorsement deal with a major rental car company, although i’m not sure which one it will be

  • GEagle

barkley is gonna get our guys murdered!

  • GEagle

did Bryce get a snap yet?

    • Jernst

is he injured today or in the doghouse for unkown reasons? Because the answer to that riddle is no, he hasn’t.

      • GEagle

        smh

  • Jernst

nice buddy pass by barkley to open the drive … yeesh

  • GEagle

how far was that field goal we shanked?

    • Crus57

      44yds according to NFL gamecenter

      • GEagle

        thanks…unacceptable!

  • Jernst

    vinny curry…still good

  • GEagle

Square, vinny and Benny all have showed up already

    • Jernst

Our second team dline > than other teams 2nd team olines

      • GEagle

certainly starting to become a trend

  • GEagle

come on Boykin!!! drop and give me 10

    • Jernst

Needs to hit the jugs machine
