PS#2 – PHI 14, CAR 6

Posted: August 15th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 165 Comments »

Good opening half. The offense was terrific, running 35 plays for 257 yards and 2 TDs. The defense still needs a lot of work, but looks worlds better than last week. The Panthers ran 32 plays for 162 yards and just 2 FGs.

Both Foles and Vick looked outstanding. The big difference is Foles throwing a terrible INT in the Red Zone. Shady McCoy…so good. He’s going to be great this year.

The defense is more aggressive and doing a much better job of tackling. Ced Thornton, Mychal Kendricks and Patrick Chung were the guys who really jumped out. Bennie Logan also played well.

Get ready for Matt Barkley in the 3rd Qtr. And Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry.

Good start. Go build on it.

I wanted to see the defense improve from last week and I got it. The Panthers are nowhere near as good on offense as the Patriots are, but I’ll take any improvement.

get used to it! Our environment is healthy, our boys are young…Keep improving week to week and we should go into the offseason happy with the direction our defense is headed

  50. 50 Jernst said at 9:31 PM on August 15th, 2013:

have never in 29 years of watching football heard the words non-football act in describing a penalty

  51. 51 Anders said at 9:33 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Also apparently dropping into coverage is a non-football act.

  52. 52 Andy124 said at 9:34 PM on August 15th, 2013:

For the 2012 Eagles, that would be fair.

  53. 53 Jernst said at 9:39 PM on August 15th, 2013:

apparently you can drop into coverage, but you can’t do it suddenly. Dumbest rule ever.

I just don’t understand how there can be a penalty that depends on the offenses reaction to something you do. If Hughes did the exact same thing and the WR stayed still, there’d certainly be no penalty, but apparently if the WR false starts then the exact same act which was totally legal in the alternate universe where the WR doesn’t false start, is now a penalty? Really??

  54. 54 Anders said at 9:48 PM on August 15th, 2013:

The funny thing is that linebackers do that all the time when blitzing or faking the blitz.

  55. 55 Jernst said at 9:54 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Either you should be allowed to move around before the snap on defense or you shouldn’t be allowed to. In the rules the offense clearly needs to stay set before the snap and the defense can move around. Why complicate it with rules that make the refs guess at the defensive players motivation for moving. If he was trying to get the offensive guy to jump then its a penalty on the defense? Dumb

  56. 56 Flyin said at 9:31 PM on August 15th, 2013:

What was that call? Non football act?

  57. 57 Dragon_Eagle said at 9:32 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Didn’t look like a double play, a jump shot, or icing to me.

    Vinny Curry: Preseason Probowler.

  59. 59 Ark87 said at 9:34 PM on August 15th, 2013:

in the first half, their first team 3rd down 4 man front was cole-cox-thornton-Barwin

in my estimation we need to be smart and rotate graham and Curry in for that package

  60. 60 GEagle said at 9:37 PM on August 15th, 2013:

on the first line we have the Beef with Cox, Soap and Thorton…we could end up with a nice change of pace 2nd line of Squares,Vinny, and Benny

  61. 61 SteveH said at 9:33 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Curry better carry this over to the regular season…

  62. 62 Jernst said at 9:34 PM on August 15th, 2013:

The amount of improvement in time management, special teams, and our QB play really highlights the areas that AR was slipping in towards the end of his time here. Really puzzling how such a good coach could lose touch so quickly.

  63. 63 Jernst said at 9:35 PM on August 15th, 2013:

If Salas doesn’t make this team it will be a travesty against humanity

  64. 64 SteveH said at 9:36 PM on August 15th, 2013:

  66. 66 Ark87 said at 9:38 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    Agreed. Jones has shown nothing.

  68. 68 JoeD said at 9:38 PM on August 15th, 2013:

  72. 72 SteveH said at 9:42 PM on August 15th, 2013:

I like Barkley tonight, he’s thrown a few really nice balls. Still looks like a rookie but looks promising.

  73. 73 TommyLawlor said at 9:47 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Promising, but definitely a rookie. Long way to go.

  74. 74 GEagle said at 9:42 PM on August 15th, 2013:

  76. 76 Corry said at 9:43 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Curry is a yard into the backfield by the time the other guys on the line start moving.

  77. 77 Jernst said at 9:43 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    really impressive first step

  78. 78 GEagle said at 9:44 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    strong hands too

  79. 79 Jernst said at 9:45 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Yea I noticed the hands last year, but the lower body explosion and ability to fire off the ball is truly shocking and impressive.

  80. 80 Mitchell said at 10:02 PM on August 15th, 2013:

That explosion is insane. It was literally a simultaneous motion of the ball being snapped and Curry jumping in the backfield.

  81. 81 Andy124 said at 9:44 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    It’s pretty consistent.

  82. 82 Jernst said at 9:45 PM on August 15th, 2013:

I really do not remember seeing that type of explosion from him last year. I always thought he showed strength and power with substandard explosion and quickness…not the case at all after watching him more this year.

  83. 83 GEagle said at 9:46 PM on August 15th, 2013:

you didn’t see how he would explode off the bench at halftime last year?
Wherever washburn is right now, he should be Fired Again!!

  84. 84 SteveH said at 9:47 PM on August 15th, 2013:

I don’t remember seeing this kind of burst though, he flashed at times as a pass rusher but his get off is really really impressive right now.

  85. 85 GEagle said at 9:50 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    agreed…was just teasin

  86. 86 Jernst said at 9:55 PM on August 15th, 2013:

pathetic that half the time he wasn’t even dressing for games. Instead we had to endure that douche Babin…ugh

  87. 87 xlGmanlx said at 3:30 AM on August 16th, 2013:

I was given a hard time calling his sacks the softest sacks I had ever seen.

  88. 88 TommyLawlor said at 9:46 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    Really explosive on the inside.

  89. 89 Mitchell said at 10:06 PM on August 15th, 2013:

The question is, as you stated in your D-line post, is he looking explosive of the end as well? How about against the run? I ask because I can not watch the whole game because I am out of coverage. I’m have to split time with Detroit and Atlanta. Can’t wait for the write up.

  90. 90 Jernst said at 10:24 PM on August 15th, 2013:

On first viewing he looked explosive wherever he was coming from. Literally a yard further up field a moment after the snap compared to the rest of the line.

  91. 91 GEagle said at 9:45 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    B. Grizzle!!!

  92. 92 Ark87 said at 9:45 PM on August 15th, 2013:

  93. 93 GEagle said at 9:48 PM on August 15th, 2013:

we call that development lol….Hoping chris McCoy shows up

  94. 94 deg0ey said at 9:46 PM on August 15th, 2013:

So, I haven’t been able to see any of this game, but looking at the box score it seems like Foles has had a couple of non-terrible rushes. Do we think that he’d be able to gain those 6-7 yards often enough to keep defenses honest in the read option?

  95. 95 Andy124 said at 9:47 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Yes. Has to stop turning the ball over though.

  96. 96 Jernst said at 9:48 PM on August 15th, 2013:

He can keep them honest, I guess…but, let’s be real here, if I was the d coordinator or a defensive player I’d let him try to get that edge every time. He’s painfully slow. 6-7 yards is about the max he’s getting before someone could catch up from the other side of the field.

  97. 97 James Adair said at 7:45 AM on August 16th, 2013:

Those 6-7 yards will win the game every time.

  98. 98 Ark87 said at 9:48 PM on August 15th, 2013:

they kept selling out on shady, first one he ran past the LOS and did a designed over hand lateral backwards to the WR with a blocker on the outside

2nd one he faked that play for a nice scamper

3rd one he scampered in for a TD, won the foot race against Luke Kuechly, Cooper had a nice block on the play

  99. 99 Anders said at 9:48 PM on August 15th, 2013:

  121. 121 Jernst said at 10:04 PM on August 15th, 2013:

I’m still intrigued by the fact that Vick seems to be running a completely different offense than the other QBs. I don’t even remember seeing him run a play out of the double wide/TE stack that appears to be the basis of Foles’ offense. Vick looks like he’s running a full NFL passing offense with the occasional option wrinkle and Foles looks like he’s running a completely different offense with gimmicks and misdirection, WR screens and read options galore. Not sure what to make of it yet though.

I’d love to see him get some work on fades in the red zone. I went to one training camp. They ran some, but didn’t run many fades. Didn’t see him really attack the high point of the ball like I wanted. But, if he ever figures out how to use his size he’d be unstoppable in the red zone.

honestly, they should sign him, andersen and clausen are garbage, GJ has earned a job in the nfl somewhere. That kid will do and has done anything asked of him, and plays with a lot of guts with his opportunities.

  134. 134 SteveH said at 10:13 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Remember when Clausen was a big topic of discussion during the draft a couple years back? I think the Panthers were on the losing end of that one…

  135. 135 SteveH said at 10:14 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    KINNE.

  136. 136 SteveH said at 10:15 PM on August 15th, 2013:

I want to see 1 on 1’s, Clifton Geathers vs. Michael Bamiro. The earth would rattle under the weight of their battle.

  137. 137 Ark87 said at 10:16 PM on August 15th, 2013:

GJ probably shoulda kept that one

  138. 138 Andy124 said at 10:16 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Is it just me or has Foles not targeted DeSean once in two games?

  139. 139 Jernst said at 10:17 PM on August 15th, 2013:

It does appear that Foles practically ignores DeSean when he’s in there.

  140. 140 Ark87 said at 10:19 PM on August 15th, 2013:

or DJax disappears when his guy isn’t getting the snaps.

Can’t make too much out of it when you can spin it either way so easilly

  141. 141 Jernst said at 10:22 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Possible, but I think one of these things is infinitely more likely than the other. I think it’s more likely that Foles does not have the skill set to get a guy like DeSean the ball down the field, more so than the notion that DeSean is purposefully tanking it when Foles is in there because he’d prefer to play with Vick.

  142. 142 Andy124 said at 10:24 PM on August 15th, 2013:

I don’t think either of those options is realistic.

I found it odd. I wasn’t trying to draw any conclusions from it.

  143. 143 Jernst said at 10:25 PM on August 15th, 2013:

You don’t think that Foles’ lack of arm strength decreases his ability to utilize DeSean’s deep speed?

  144. 144 Andy124 said at 10:29 PM on August 15th, 2013:

To the point of zero targets in 4 drives, no.

  145. 145 James Adair said at 8:27 AM on August 16th, 2013:

He has hit him with some deep bombs in 11 vs. 11’s

  146. 146 Jernst said at 11:22 AM on August 20th, 2013:

Hitting someone on a 30 yard go route in practice is much different than getting it out there 40-50-60 yards down field and fast enough to get it there before the safeties can get over. I was at 2 of the training camp practices…Foles’ deep ball hangs in the air and takes awhile to get there. The majority of his deep throws were under thrown. Not saying Foles’ is garbage and can’t play in the NFL. He looks pretty decent. But, his lack of arm strength definitely takes away some of Desean’s ability to stretch defenses.

  147. 147 SteveH said at 10:18 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    GJ Kinne: should he start?

  148. 148 Andy124 said at 10:19 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Quit trolling… of course he should.

  151. 151 Flyin said at 10:20 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    kneel down… really disappointing.

  152. 152 SteveH said at 10:21 PM on August 15th, 2013:

GJ Kinne doesn’t need to prove anything.

I regress. Preserve the future of mankind.

  154. 154 Ark87 said at 10:26 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Love the offense, but we need to get more points out of all those yards. Turnovers again.

  155. 155 Andy124 said at 10:28 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    Turnovers on 67% of Vick’s drives. /s

  156. 156 Anders said at 10:30 PM on August 15th, 2013:

he ran 2 drives last week and 3 drives this week. There was 2 turnovers (one was hail mary), so 40%.

  157. 157 Ark87 said at 10:30 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    /s<—-sarcasm

  158. 158 Andy124 said at 10:31 PM on August 15th, 2013:

The /s indicates sarcasm. Even I’m not biased enough to even try to count Polk’s fumble against Vick.

But your math is spot on.

  159. 159 Anders said at 10:37 PM on August 15th, 2013:

    I totally missed that 😛

  160. 160 Andy124 said at 10:43 PM on August 15th, 2013:

lol, all good. Let’s try this again.

Foles with TDs on 50% of his drives this preseason. Vick on only 40%. /s

  161. 161 Ark87 said at 10:29 PM on August 15th, 2013:

Hey the D didn’t let anybody into the endzone for the first time in…how long?

  162. 162 Andy124 said at 10:29 PM on August 15th, 2013:

I don’t think they let anybody in the endzone yesterday.

I don’t get a chance to post during games often. Thanks all. It was a lot of fun. My only negative during the 1st half, if I glanced from the tv, I missed a play. Chip is bringing the new NFL world order.
