Open Sunday

Posted: September 22nd, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 94 Comments »

No Eagles football today.

I’m still working on the offensive half of the DGR.

Games of interest:  NYG at CAR … STL at DAL.

If the Rams win, the Eagles will sit atop the NFC East at 1-2. This is not a strong division so far this year. Is there one good Safety in the entire NFC East?

I’m hoping Chris Long and Robert Quinn pound on Tony Romo.

Will be interesting to see how the Giants defend Cam Newton. And another Eli meltdown would be fun to watch.

Go Panthers. Go Rams.

There is NOTHING interesting about Giants / Panthers being on TV over the Packers / Bengals game. Fox 29 can kiss my grits. I’ll be watching Ravens / Texans.

  2. 2 Media Mike said at 10:50 AM on September 22nd, 2013:

And I agree 100% with go Panthers go Rams.

  3. 3 Julescat said at 10:53 AM on September 22nd, 2013:

the downside is this could be the Sunday that the NFCE teams all win.

now that I have posted it, I have jinxed it

  4. 4 Media Mike said at 10:55 AM on September 22nd, 2013:

Not sure if the Panthers can pull it off, but the Rams are legit.

  5. 5 Media Mike said at 10:55 AM on September 22nd, 2013:

And when their D shuts down Kaepernick next week, I’ll be on here speaking more truth about that overrated melon head of a scramble bum.

  6. 6 Julescat said at 11:46 AM on September 22nd, 2013:

    “scramble bum”

    I like it.

  7. 7 Media Mike said at 12:22 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

I really don’t see Kaep as a guy who can continue to win games when teams are more fully able to box him in with newer tactics.

  8. 8 GvilleEagleFan said at 6:04 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

So his lack of read option against the Packers was him being a “scramble bum?” 400+ yards passing is being a “scramble bum?” Sorry man, statuesque pocket passers are on the way out of the NFL. I know Flacco had an amazing postseason, but they’re going to be the exception rather than the rule

  9. 9 Media Mike said at 6:06 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

You can take your “way out of the NFL” conversation and slide it into the disc holder on your video game console. Care to check Kaep’s work last week up in Seattle and so far vs. Indy?

  10. 10 Media Mike said at 7:08 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

9/20 98 yards and a fumble lost with 2:00 to go. Great game Colin!

    Quick comment:

    – The more I rewatch games, the worse I feel with Kendricks. I see a fast LB that is not great in coverage, misses an AWFUL lot of tackles, and is inconsistently physical (I saw him blow up some play them get pushed around by McGrath vs KC). Can someone try to cheer me up and explain me why he s going to be a Pro Bowler?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko1iFkz11xg

Sean Taylor, god I loved him at Miami. His highlight reel is so impressive. Not a Skins fan, but wow, I remember how much I feared him (and Pinkston too did). Even if he was inconsistent in coverage. Also, look at the number of tackles that would be penalties in there (head first, horsecollar). Crazy to think that was just a few years ago.

  12. 12 Always Hopeful said at 12:26 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

I don’t think I have any hopeful words for you about Kendricks. You mentioned his core flaws above. He flashes at times, but he struggles to consistently be and do what we think he is capable of.

  13. 13 SteveH said at 12:30 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Ah ha! So you admit your name is a lie then!

  14. 14 Always Hopeful said at 12:51 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Ha, ha, my screen name is my intent 🙂 I believed the Eagles could win games with Mike McMahon at quarterback, so I am either hopeful or crazy, or both. Since I’m a fan, I’m both.

  15. 15 SteveH said at 1:19 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Since we’re confessing our fan inspired delusions, I also thought we could win with Mcmahon. I totally drank the kool-aid about him when we signed him in the preseason. I remember Spuds wrote a column about how the Eagles had another offseason coupe by signing him. I bought in hook line and sinker.

  16. 16 BlindChow said at 11:54 AM on September 22nd, 2013:

The Panthers don’t have a chance. They’ll be getting a new coach next year.

  17. 17 ACViking said at 2:44 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Too soon . . . but not a bad bet, eh?

  18. 18 BlindChow said at 9:01 AM on September 23rd, 2013:

Looks like I may have overestimated those Giants!

  19. 19 Aleandro green said at 11:57 AM on September 22nd, 2013:

would the eagles have an interest in josh gordon? heard the browns are still continuing their fire sale

  20. 20 Media Mike said at 12:18 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

I’d offer a 4th that conditionally goes to a 3rd. Maybe a 3rd that slides to a 2nd if he hits certain bigger numbers if I have to. Gordon is DIRT CHEAP for this season and two more.

  21. 21 SuPaFrO said at 12:33 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

    That’s way too much for us. Maybe a 5th to a 4th

  22. 22 Media Mike said at 12:36 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

You won’t get him for that. He was a supplemental 2nd rounder. You’ll get him for one round less than that…..maybe.

  23. 23 Aleandro green said at 12:44 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

    thats a good point.

  24. 24 ICDogg said at 12:46 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

He is devalued though based on the fact that he has a failed drug test on his NFL record. That risk is a factor in determining what his market value is.

  25. 25 Always Hopeful said at 12:22 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

This is kind of like “bye week withdrawal”. I don’t like game days without Eagles football. It’s like an eternity waiting for next Sunday.

The only thing that will bring satisfaction is if the Rams, Lions and the Panthers handle their business today. Maybe too much to ask for, but that’s my hope.

NFC East is looking real weak right now. That might be a tease for us all season, but at least have a chance to “be in it” all season.

  26. 26 SuPaFrO said at 12:31 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

    -Random hope

With all these drug problems for Von miller n Aldon smith, does anyone see the possibility of their team getting tired of these negative publicity and release them? They are franchise players but too much crap can change anyone’s opinion right?

  27. 27 Media Mike said at 12:36 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

No. The NFL owners, league office, and fan bases are 100% BS with stars getting special treatment. How many of you were in favor of insta-trading Brett Myers when he hit his wife in the face with a closed fist twice on the streets in Boston? How many less of you would have been in favor of that if Chase Utley did the same thing in his prime?
I’m all in favor of punishing these guys, but to be honest I get roped into wanting my team to win games. I’m sure 31 other fan bases are the same.
The league office needs to take care of this because the rest of us cannot be trusted.
They especially need to make both DUIs and refusal to take a breathalyzer test a 4 game auto suspension as is the case with PEDs.

  28. 28 SteveH said at 12:47 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Not a chance. 3rd string fringe roster players get released for legal problems, stars get a stern lecture. Aldon Smith could probably kill a pregnant mother and as long as he didn’t get convicted he’d remain a 49er.

  29. 29 SteveH said at 12:48 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

plopped a good portion of my bankroll on my daily fantasy teams today because I actually had time to think through some lineups. Inevitably the lineups that I put a lot of thought into do worse than the ones I make on the fly though, so I anticipate big losses today!

  30. 30 Jack Waggoner said at 12:53 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

for me the 2 decisions I spent more than 10 seconds thinking about were Wallace vs Edelman and Romo vs Bradford. Went with Wallace/Romo.

  31. 31 SteveH said at 12:57 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

I got Edelman in. I feel like he’s probably a lock for 10 catches for 70 yards, with the upside of whether he gets in the endzone or not. Rumor has it Revis will be taking the boundary receiver so brady will literally have no one to throw to but Edelman or Sudfeld, and sudfeld is junk. Plus tampa has a good run D so I feel the pats wont be able to just run the ball all day.

Edit: I’m almost certainly wrong though!

  32. 32 SteveH said at 1:06 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Watching the Giants for the first time this year, their run blocking is atrocious.

  33. 33 Anders said at 1:07 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

most NFL OLs is atrocious at run blocking after you have watched the Eagles

  34. 34 SteveH said at 1:09 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Yeah but the Giants just fail the eyeball test. 3 RB carries for 0 yards and they looked really bad doing it. and whoever the Giants left tackle is just got smoked by Greg Hardy for a sack. I can see why they’re 0-2.

  35. 35 Anders said at 1:12 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

and Beatty is the best OL the Giants got.

  36. 36 SteveH said at 1:20 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Manning sacked 3 times already. Giants look terrible. I don’t think they’ll repeat the whole 0-2 start then superbowl run this year.

  37. 37 Media Mike said at 1:22 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

They’re playing Justine Puke in their starting lineup, of course they can’t block.

  38. 38 Dragon_Eagle said at 1:32 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

I’ve watched good parts of their first 2 games. This OL has been as bad as they look today. They can’t run at all.

  39. 39 Eric Carranza said at 1:53 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Make that 5 times a few seconds into the 2nd quarter

  40. 40 SteveH said at 1:39 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

  45. 45 SteveH said at 1:51 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Eli Manning 5th sack already. Unreal how bad their OL is.

  46. 46 Eagles_Fan_in_San_Fran said at 1:52 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Philip Rivers: 8/9, 77 yards, 1 TD (139.4 rating) against TEN thus far.
It looks like maybe we were playing against the old Pro Bowl-caliber Rivers the other week. That makes me feel better about our D.

  47. 47 Eagles_Fan_in_San_Fran said at 1:57 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

One other note: The announcers pointed out that SD WR Eddie Royal is completely healthy now, unlike evidently in the past, and is really on the same page as Rivers. Again, maybe we just ran into an unexpected offensive buzz saw against SD.

  48. 48 BlindChow said at 12:28 PM on September 23rd, 2013:

Tennessee did a good job disguising their blitzes. I wonder how much the Eagles game influenced that…

  49. 49 Dragon_Eagle said at 1:55 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

What is the record for sacks in a game? Panthers at 6 early in the 2nd.

  52. 52 Media Mike said at 2:02 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Because the Giants suck at life, have horrible fans, and in general are the biggest bunch of pussies alive.

  55. 55 GvilleEagleFan said at 6:02 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

  58. 58 BlindChow said at 12:26 PM on September 23rd, 2013:

  60. 60 SteveH said at 2:42 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

    At home, Seahawks A-#1.

Not sure about on the road.

  70. 70 GermanEagle said at 3:54 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

The Seahawks are the most complete team in the NFC, hands down.

However what makes me optimistic is the fact that neither the Chargers nor the Chiefs have really outplayed us. It was mainly our own mistakes that has us at 1-2.

That being said I cannot wait until Peyton hangs 50 on us…

  77. 77 SteveH said at 4:09 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

The Giants got humiliated today. Eli couldn’t even move the ball on the prevent defense. Offensive line got overwhelmed from the start. They finished with what, 129 total yards of offense I think. They look like they’re neck and neck with the Jaguars for worst team in the league right now.

  78. 78 SteveH said at 4:18 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

So the Cowboys pick up the first win outside of the division today. NFCEast now 1-7 against non-NFC East opponents.

  79. 79 BobSmith77 said at 4:28 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Watched parts of the Boys-Rams game and don’t take away much from the result. ‘Boys beat up them up on both lines pretty badly and unlike last week the Rams just turtled showing no real fight when they got down early.

When the ‘Boys have their first 100+ yard rusher in over a year and their crummy O-line blows your front seven off the ball from the whistle, you have problems up front.

Still don’t know if the ‘Boys are a good team that can win 10 games though despite the beating they put on the Rams today. They have some very good and talented players on both sides of the ball but some real serious holes too.

  80. 80 Stephen Stempo said at 10:07 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Is Bryant really that good or is he just all potential still? I don’t follow the boys.

  81. 81 BobSmith77 said at 11:12 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

Depends. Bryant had a breakout year last year and a better year than Jackson has ever had. Bryant doesn’t quite have the open field explosiveness Jackson has but I would take his ability to score in the red zone.

Perfect example today was the first TD the Boys score. It was a simple 1-on-1 jump ball to the end zone where Bryant outlept and out-muscled the Rams’ CB for an easy TD. No way Jackson can do that.

  82. 82 anon said at 12:30 AM on September 23rd, 2013:

Bryant is the receiver every team wants fast big body receiver that will make your QB look good b’c he can win jump balls. See the Cutler/Marshall connection. But he’s often hurt, hasn’t picked up all of the fine points of the game.

  83. 83 planetx1971 said at 4:38 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

  84. 84 Stephen Stempo said at 10:06 PM on September 22nd, 2013:

the way I look at it is we get 5 more games against the NFC east. That’s 6 very possible wins right there.. Pick up 2 more outside the division and 8-8 might just win it this year.

Listen to the WFAN tonight has been highly entertaining. Manning and Coughlin have won 2 SB titles for them in the last 6 years and they still take a ton of grief in NYC.

Still don’t understand why Manning isn’t more popular in NYC and with Giants’ fans in general. Personality? Demeanor? Some mediocre regular seasons? Don’t get it.

Then again I don’t get the same people in Philly who still think Buddy Ryan was a good head coach either. He wasn’t. Overmatched (often badly) in every single playoff game he ever coached as the Eagles’ head coach and a disaster in Arizona as the head coach.

  94. 94 Anders said at 5:54 AM on September 23rd, 2013:

Because Eli Manning as never looked like a super good QB? Since 2008 (when they lost too us in the playoffs) they have missed the play offs every year except that fluke 2011 year.

SB wins does not cure the need for wanting good regular season play. Also right now one can debate if the Giants or the Jags are the worst team in the NFL.
