PHI at WAS – 1st Half

Posted: September 9th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 267 Comments »

We have the inactive list and there is one big surprise.

DE Vinny Curry
CB Shaun Prater
OT Dennis Kelly
OT Matt Tobin
QB Matt Barkley
TE Emil Igwenagu

Only 6 inactives? Remember that the Eagles only have 52 players right now.

Curry is the real head-scratcher. I can only guess that he still is freelancing too much and the coaches don’t fully trust him as a DE. They could use him as a Nickel DT, but remember that WAS is a run-heavy team. A lot of their passing is play-action stuff. I don’t know how much the Nickel and Dime units will play tonight.

I like the fact Kelly is rolling the dice with only 2 QBs. If you need your 3rd QB in a game, you’re probably going to lose anyway.

I do find it interesting that the Eagles have 5 Safeties and 5 ILBs active for the game. That points to Kelly’s emphasis on STs.

The Eagles got a bit of good news from the Skins inactives. S Brandon Meriweather is out. Reed Doughty will take his place. Meriweather played vs the Eagles last year and had a good game. Doughty is more of a try-hard guy than a playmaker.

I think the Cal boys could be big tonight. I’m talking about DeSean Jackson on offense and Mychal Kendricks on defense. Both guys were 2nd round picks, but have big time potential. The Eagles need guys to make plays tonight. Jackson and Kendricks can be playmakers for this team.

I still don’t have a good feel for whether the Eagles will win. I do know that I’m ready for the game. Yesterday was fun, but I’m ready for the Eagles to kick some butt.

_

  • Jack Waggoner

    Groin injury for Meriweather

  • Corry

I just want to see the Eagles improve at something. Maybe fewer penalties. Fewer missed tackles. Better red zone offense and/or defense. Just give me something.

  • Arby1

I don’t have a good feeling about a win either. Really just want to see this offense GO.

  • Corry

FINALLY! We get to see Chip unveil his offense!

  • Felix

    Eagles football – GO EAGLES!!

  • CampDracula

Before kickoff, I want to thank you, Tommy, for feeding my Eagles fix this summer. Now let’s all go see the real thing!

    Go Eagles!!!!

  • bdbd20

Anyone else excited to see Jeff Maehl?

    • Corry

Jersey is already on the way. Future Hall of Famer. Book it.

      EDIT: We need sarcasm font.

    • Jack Waggoner

      And how!

    • TommyLawlor

      The Maehl-man always delivers!!!

    • Andy124

He’s the Eagles I’m third most excited to see. Right behind Curry and Kinne.

  • CampDracula

The inactives list rules out 4 TE sets. Kinda a bummer.

    • TommyLawlor

They can use Riley Cooper out there and have a similar set.

  • Corry

Lightning speed. Holy crap. Don’t you know we need time to comment on a message board Chip?!

  • Andy124

They even go in motion fast.

  • Andy124

Did Vick just throw a block?

    • xeynon

He did. I love the commitment and willingness to put his body on the line for the team, but… don’t want to see him doing that too often.

  • Corry

    …Really?

  • Andy124

Might be impossible to get a conclusive review on that.

  • Crus57

They Eagled the crap out of that one.

  • Corry

    I think that’s barely a forward pass…but I don’t know if it’s enough evidence to overturn it.

    • Iskar36

When I saw it live I was yelling at the TV for the Eagles to pick it up because my gut told me it was backwards. I can’t see this getting overturned.

      • Corry

Yeah there should have been a 11 guys running for that ball.

    • shah8

It’s a terrible call. Most screen plays will look like that. And batted down screen passes would be taken back all the time…

      • D3FB

The ends wont be so far upfield on the quick bubble screen.

  • D3FB

Lack of situational awareness. I feel like we’ve seen this before.

    • xeynon

That was terrible football all around. Terrible route by McCoy, terrible decision by Vick, terrible awareness by the rest of the team.

  • Corry

Welcome to 2013. Exactly the same as 2012.

    • Crus57

      Took less time than 2012.

      • Corry

        Touche

    • RichF

nah, we screw up waaaay faster now.

      • Daz

        gotta stay up-tempo!

  • shah8

    Just…wow

  • xeynon

Meet the new Vick, same as the old Vick.

  • RichF

That’s one way to keep RG3 off the field.

  • Crus57

Vick and Mccoy just wanted to stay on the field, they were having so much fun.

  • Andy124

This proves that Chip DOES care about time of possession.

  • teltschikfakeout88

    Awful red zone offense…..

    • TommyLawlor

      That was torture.

  • Corry

Fun Fact: London Fletcher is the only linebacker who wears his age as a jersey number.

    • TommyLawlor

Ha. Amazing how good he is and how old he is.

    • Andy124

When did they start allowing 3 digit numbers?

  • ceteris_paribus1776

as good as they’ve looked at times, Vick’s missed 4 open guys so far, one for a td.

    • shah8

announcer was wrong on that. Safety was there on Cooper.

      • BC1968

Yep, he would’ve had to fit it. Not wide open, but a possibility.

      • Corry

yeah looked like 24 was coming across when Cooper broke loose.

      • xeynon

At the end of the play. But if Vick unloads that ball quickly, with his arm strength, it’s a TD.

To be fair to Vick, in that replay you couldn’t see very well what Vick was dealing with when the window for the throw to Cooper opened up. If he didn’t have his feet set or was trying to evade a tackler at that moment, it would have been tough to make that throw even if he did see Cooper.

        • ceteris_paribus1776

this. He was open initially, but it was unclear whether or not Vick even had the opportunity to hit him early in the route.

    • Iskar36

Yep. Definitely a miss on throws to Avant, Celek, and Ertz that I can think of so far.

      • Arby1

Yeah he’s been off so far

  • Crus57

Kinda feel sorry for Ron Winter, getting us as his first game of the season. He might have a heart attack in the second half.

  • Iskar36

Awful challenge. Actually takes points off the board and loses a timeout.

  • teltschikfakeout88

    Terrible challenge

  • xeynon

How quick do we hear calls for Kelly’s firing if Henery misses this?

    • BC1968

Wow, hold off the negativity, way too early.

      • xeynon

Just making a joke at the expense of the nitwit negadelphian fans out there.

        • BC1968

          lol

    • Christopher Miller

thank goodness we don’t need to second guess that…still wondering why he bothered challenging…did Ertz run over asking to review?

  • Crus57

    Beautiful kicking from Henery.

  • BC1968

I was hoping the Andy Reid challenges left town with him.

  • shah8

The speed of the offense is preventing replays on tv.

  • shah8

Right now, I’m pretty happy with the offense.

    • Christopher Miller

agreed…we may be in a lot of shootouts, but this O will be fun to watch.

  • CampDracula

    So far, I’m slightly encouraged.

    …but mostly tortured.

    • CampDracula

      Nevermind.

  • Corry

    FUMBLE!!!

  • BC1968

We’re 100 percent, can we keep that turnover rate up Tommy?

  • Christopher Miller

    nice

  • BC1968

He had 2 days back there, this O is crazy

  • D3FB

Somebody call Elias, they may break the yardage record tonight.

  • shah8

A clean version of this offense is total dynamite. This offense with Maclin would be truly unstoppable.

    • xeynon

To borrow a phrase from Parcells, let’s hold off before we crown them. Defensive coordinators are going to develop counter-strategies.

And there’s no way to run a clean version of this offense – more plays not only means more opportunities to score, it means more opportunities to make mistakes. And this offense has enough mistake-prone players to make that an issue.

  • BC1968

Maybe like the first VIck game here? Tee hee

  • BC1968

Holy shit, still 9 mins left..lol

  • BC1968

    I need a time-out

  • BC1968

    My eyes are exhausted

    • CampDracula

      It’s like watching basketball.

      • BC1968

        Lakers in the 80′s.

  • nicolajNN

So far the season is delivering on the one thing I’m hoping for, entertainment. Unfortunately there has been a little misery as well

    • BC1968

Even after the Redskins touchdown there was much to be excited about.

      • nicolajNN

Definitely, the offence is so much fun to watch

  • BC1968

Defense is unbeatable…sorry i got carried away

  • Corry

    …this feels like a snail’s pace now.

  • Corry

You can hear a pin drop in the stadium.

  • BC1968

turnover, loss of 3, penalty forced…let’s end the season

  • Christopher Miller

was that a tackle there? forgot what those looked like.

    • BC1968

      haha

  • Guest

    RG3 yet to do anything?!

  • BC1968

Whoa, hold on there, somebody made a tackle in the open field?

    • shah8

Michael Kendricks got off a block to get the screen play!

  • Crus57

    !!!

  • BC1968

    WTF woooooooooooo

  • Corry

    WTF?! TWO TURNOVERS?!

    • BC1968

I’m having chest pains! To quote a commercial

  • BC1968

We almost matched last year’s total

    • Christopher Miller

      of tackles

      • BC1968

        That too

      • Corry

        lol

  • BreakinAnklez

INT!!!!!!! FUMBLE!!!! RG3 never throws INts and Morris never fumbles says the national media.

  • BC1968

Happy Happy Joy Joy. Tommy say something to your people!

  • Corry

Washington’s D is going to need oxygen at half time.

  • nopain23

I dont recognize this defense..forced fumbles..interceptions..WHO ARE THESE IMPOSTORS???????????

  • Crus57

Of course, one advantage Boykin has is that he’s harder for QBs to see.

  • BC1968

RG3 didn’t take a snap like Gruden said. Geez, you think he would’ve done something

  • scratcherk

    No pushups for Boykin

  • Christopher Miller

glad to see all those push ups paid off

  • BC1968

    McCoy is crazy good.

  • Christopher Miller

let’s take that play out of the mix please…not ready to see Nick yet

  • Corry

There’s still 6 minutes left in the first quarter?

  • shah8

    Herremans is dead to me

    • Corry

Yeah. he just…got old or suddenly lost all his skill

      • shah8

The real problem is the binary of it all. When Herremans is doing well, he’s doing well. When he’s doing badly, he’s allowing free rushers, and not just failing gracefully.

  • Corry

wow, if ‘Skins 25 didn’t catch it, Boykin would have.

    • BC1968

Yep, so even though the announcer said it was a no no, he saved them a yard…lol

      • BC1968

no no for the returner to catch. it.

  • scratcherk

    Good STs

  • xeynon

I’m thinking Boykin might be the best cornerback on this roster, and not by a small margin.

  • shah8

Gonna have to do some run-run-pass, now. Nothing too flashy.

  • Andy124

Biggest hit of Nate Allen’s career.

  • Christopher Miller

OMG…is this what heaven is like?

    • scratcherk

      *like*

  • shah8

Teams, from Thursday to Monday, are very rusty.

  • BC1968

    WOW

  • Corry

TOMMY! Anyone! when was the last time we had a safety?!

  • Andy124

Redskins’ O is beyond pathetic right now.

  • BC1968

3 safeties this weekend. Is that a record..Steelers, another team and the Eagles.

    • scratcherk

      Four safeties now i think

      • BC1968

        Yep

  • Corry

Ok, serious question…Why in the hell would you run a toss play in the endzone?

    • Christopher Miller

nobody would expect it (including Morris)?

  • BC1968

    I stand corrected, 4 safeties.

  • BC1968

    Good slide.

  • ceteris_paribus1776

notice all pressure is coming from the right hand side off the offensive line where rookie Lane Johnson resides…coincidence???

    • Crus57

Lane Johnson and the remains of Todd Herremans.

      • Corry

Johnson gets some leeway for being a rookie. Herremans…eh…

    • BC1968

Since they’ve started blitzes…coordinator has had a chance to look at offense? Hopefully they’ll adjust.

  • xeynon

That sequence is a great example of the hidden value of special teams. If Jones boots that into the end zone or the gunners don’t get off blocks and get down there, that’s a garden variety six yard loss instead of two points and a turnover.

  • D3FB

    That was a flop

    • Mac

Absurd…the player clearly looks to the sideline and gets up “hurt”

  • xeynon

Vick is never going to last 16 games at this pace. Taking way too many unnecessary shots.

    • Andy124

      Vick don’t care.

  • Andy124

    Wha??

  • BC1968

They are missing way too many opportunities that’s going to come back and bite them.

    • Corry

      Execution is piss poor.

  • shah8

Kelly needs to run the ball a bit more.

    • Christopher Miller

I sure hope we see more soon…

      • shah8

It’s still working. Washington can’t keep up, and eventually there will be big plays from exhaustion. It’s a matter of understanding what a play can and can’t do in the NFL. Like a deeper pass when linemen are cutting. And that still took a good play by a DB to break up that pass.

Some old fashioned screens will help, too.

  • shah8

Trent Cole has a really good tackle.

  • Crus57

We’ve scored 3 times in 3 different ways, the Skins have just got their first first down of the game, and yet we only lead by 5. Weird night.

    • Corry

Eagles aren’t executing the offense very well. Way too many mistakes and negative plays.

      • Iskar36

Still very early, but the tempo seemed to catch the Redskins off guard. The Redskin’s defense has settled down a bit and the offense is not nearly as successful. Right now, amazingly, the defense (and some bad Redskin’s mistakes are what have us leading in this game so far.

        • Corry

The ‘Skins are definitely helping us out here, but we’re helping them stay in the game.

      • shah8

Most teams are pretty rusty, right now. Washington is playing quite a bit worse.

        • Corry

Yeah the Skins look pretty bad right now. They’re all over the place.

  • deg0ey

The offense has been a bit up and down, but it looks like once they’ve ironed out the kinks it’s gonna be pretty awesome.

  • Christopher Miller

Pretty happy with tackling so far

  • BC1968

We got a normal like defense so far.

    • RichF

This is my fantasy for this season. Execute assignments, limit stupid mistakes, don’t blame each other for mess ups, and finish middle of the league. So far, they’re doing that, though the skins offense is playing poorly, so I’m not ready to get too excited yet.

    • CampDracula

There’s no way they keep this up. But so far, they’re better than normal. Two turnovers, a safety, no points given up, just one first down, and 30 yards. I’ll take that every quarter.

  • Corry

It’s so weird to see an animated coach on the sideline.

  • shah8

How many flops you think they can do?

  • D3FB

The redskins apparently don’t work their calves. They probably skip leg day.

  • BC1968

    Cramping up, got pickle juice?

  • Mac

    “Perhaps a cramp again….”

  • Crus57

If this amount of faking is going to go on, the NFL needs to start instituting the Yellow Card/Red Card system. Obvious flops are a yellow.

  • Andy124

Anyone have any idea what can realistically be done about the fake injuries? I have no ideas other than drink more beer, which of course, is the solution to everything.

  • BC1968

Realize Jackson has like 85? yards without a real bomb. Very efficient.

  • dislikedisqus

I feel like I’m watching a superhero movie.

  • BC1968

They can only fake so much before they make a rule change mid-game.

  • Crus57

    Nice work, Herremans.

  • Corry

Jesus Herremans. Where did your talent go?

  • shah8

What is the deal with Herreman

    • shah8

And the announcer is stupid for thinking Vick can get a hot route when there is a friggin’ free release like that.

      • BC1968

        Exactly, how? Wtf

  • scratcherk

    Come on Herremans

  • BC1968

    Nice special teams work again.

  • Mac

I said it last year and I’ll say it again… herremans is on the downside of his career.

    • Crus57

At this rate he’s going to be on the “bench warming” side of his career.

  • BC1968

    It’s the dr’s show.

  • Corry

    Wow, this defense is swarming.

    • BC1968

Damn, I was just going to say that. They do have some good players, jyust have to put it together.

    • ceteris_paribus1776

I like what I see so far, but RGIII doesn’t look right.

  • BC1968

RG3 looks like he’s hobbling since he was blasted

  • Mac

    Punt away from 10

  • Mac

Which team won the division last year?

    • Crus57

Dr James Andrews and his surgical team?

  • Andy124

JP was out? Breather or hurt?

  • scratcherk

JP looks to be OK, coming back in game

  • BC1968

We have to make this more than a one score game, it shouldn’t be this close. I don’t see the Redskins doing much if RG3 stays in this condition. HE’s not running, throwing well.

  • Andy124

WTF did Vick just do there? Thow a block, then fall backwards awkardly like he got shot in the back.

    • Andy124

That was on the McCoy run.

  • BC1968

Nice. Jackson can’t hot dog it like that. Jackass.

  • ceteris_paribus1776

again pressure from the right. This is getting ridiculous.

  • Mac

Send Johnson or peters out there to punish that little shit

  • BC1968

    Two midgets ready to fight.

  • Corry

    Deangelo Hall is a bitch.

  • Crus57

Damn Celek runs seam routes so well.

  • BC1968

    WOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • BC1968

Better than most of last year already.

  • BC1968

    For Celek I mean.

  • BC1968

Vick had some early misses, but looking good.

  • shah8

Those extra runs this last drive definitely helped…

  • Corry

    Wow! 44 plays, 22 runs, 22 passes.

  • Corry

And nice Special Teams play there Polk!

  • BC1968

    Wow special teams again!

  • Iskar36

Vick was missing on several of his early throws, but his throw to Celek was fantastic.

  • BC1968

Wonder if Andy is watching. Yeah I should’ve done that.

  • Mac

The joy on this team… Polks face on that tackle was priceless

  • BC1968

    Wow! i can’t stop wowing.

  • scratcherk

Its so refreshing to have a coach that pays attention to details:

Desean Jackson yakking and possibly going to get penalty… Bring him out of game for a play. Would not have gone down that way last year.

    • BC1968

Yep, good call. See Chi earlier screaming his head off at the team on the field? Not last year.

  • Corry

C’mon Williams! I like the sack, but you gotta put that facemask into the kidneys!

  • Andy124

    Barwin was MOVING.

  • Crus57

Skins fans booing. Won’t be mentioned in the press, I imagine.

  • scratcherk

Ugh, DJ still talking trash to hall.

  • shah8

Well, one more successful drive, and this game is over.

  • Teehee

Jesus, I love having a defense.

  • Andy124

Chip is applying pressure in every way pressure can be applied and Washington is crumbling.

  • Corry

jesus, Vick picking himself up again.

  • BC1968

Look at all the stats these guys are piling up in a half!

  • Daz

The stats going up are like when you play Madden on the easiest setting!

  • shah8

They are going after the ball in Brown’s hand. He’s holding on.

  • Corry

Lots of hands on hips on the Skins D. They’re exhausted.

  • Crus57

50 plays in the first half!

  • BC1968

WTF Jackson and McCoy over 100 yards..

    • shah8

Gotta rotate them good. Nobody want’s injuries from players too tired to stay coordinated.

      • BC1968

True they have Brown, but they don’t have Maclin.

  • CampDracula

“The Eagles have run 50 plays in the first half.”

    Beautiful.

  • Andy124

They said they’d mix speeds. Seems like they’ve been green light all game.

  • Iskar36

Ok, so minor concern for now, but still curious about others thoughts. Is our team capable of maintaining this pace throughout the year? I’m particularly concerned about McCoy. Already has 20 carries.

    • Corry

Yeah, that’s a concern. I hope going forward we see more of Brown and Polk if we’re going to be running this many plays.

    • CampDracula

Judging from the preseason, my biggest concern about this team is depth. So your point is well received.

  • Corry

You could have driven a school bus through that hole.

  • Crus57

I swear I was expecting D-Jax to have injured Vick with that celebration.

    • Teehee

      Same thing I was thinking.

    • Andy124

      ditto

      • scratcherk

        x3

  • BC1968

Yaaa! Now don’t do that again. He got f ed up doing the same thing in PHilly against the Redskins, remember broke his ribs?

  • scratcherk

    Ah special teams…. So refreshing….

  • BC1968

Running it out? Keep doing it..lol

  • Corry

    322 yards to 47?!

    • BC1968

      Crazy.

  • BC1968

Don’t give them anything cheap here.

  • nicolajNN

Shady is league leading rusher after 1 half. Crazy

    • Teehee

Love this offense. Just don’t get him hurt.

    • Andy124

      That’s pretty cool.

    • BC1968

No freaking shit….imagine fantasy, which i don’t play, but crazy.

  • Crus57

Other things to note, we only used 1 of our timeouts, and that was in a failed challenge.

  • Corry

Now THAT was an awesome blitz.

    • Teehee

      Slammed.

    • Crus57

      Man, Kendricks was shifting.

  • BC1968

He threw a Vick ball. I would yank him, but I hope they don’t.

  • ceteris_paribus1776

I’d like to see all 3 rbs pound the rock the entire second half. I’m legitimately worried about the offense’s ability to keep this pace all year. There’s no way they can last and Vick is taking too many shots.

That’s the downside to the blitzkrieg…

  • Corry

The ‘skins are falling apart here.

    • Teehee

Just let it go and hope you can fix it at halftime.

  • Crus57

Loved that none of the Skins O-Line realised the half was over.

  • Andy124

Since a silver lining isn’t called for, I’ll provide a dark grey lining: We won’t often play a team that plays this poorly on offense. It’s truly a pathetic display of football. You’d almost think their QB was a young guy with no preseason.

    • Corry

      …can’t I enjoy it for a half?

      • Andy124

You did. I posted at least a second after the half was over. :)

        • Corry
