2nd Half SNF + More Eagles Talk

Posted: October 13th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 89 Comments »

The previous post was getting crowded with comments so I figured I’d start a new post.

What is up with the Skins? That clock management late in the half was bad. And sideline interference on the coach? Odd.

DeMarcus Ware has an injury. I’m hoping it takes 8 days to heal.

Feel free to keep debating Foles/Vick. I’ll have plenty to say in the coming days.

Go Skins!!!

Bruce Carter is back in? What happened to Sims?! I wanted to play against Sims.

Sims is so bad at tackling he probably missed the game itself

    It must be shark week.

  4. 4 iceberg584 said at 10:18 PM on October 13th, 2013:

Jimmy Bama was getting on Damaris Johnson a bit over in his “10 Awards of the Game” article for his kickoff return issues. They were bad, but his punt returns were pretty horrid today too. He failed to fair catch the first punt of the game, letting the Bucs get a good bounce. Perhaps not coincidentally, DeSean was out there to field the next punt. But the play that really got me was later when he had a *ton* of space after the catch, he made a move that basically consisted of him stopping on a dime, turning his back, and absorbing a big hit.

  5. 5 Mark Saltveit said at 11:17 PM on October 13th, 2013:

    Jordan Poyer returns kicks, too

  6. 6 D3FB said at 12:08 AM on October 14th, 2013:

I was going to question Poyer’s long speed, and then I remember Damaris is still slower.

  7. 7 Weapon Y said at 11:54 PM on October 13th, 2013:

De’Anthony Thomas would look good returning kicks in an Eagles uniform next year.

  8. 8 Weapon Y said at 10:34 PM on October 13th, 2013:

Tommy, do you think that if Chip does decide to bench Vick for Foles that he’d consider using Vick for some gadget plays kind of like the way Andy used him in 2009? More importantly, how would Vick respond to that role? He still has exceptional speed and a capable arm, so I’d consider it to maximize the use of all available offensive weapons. Boy, it’s crazy that Vick might get to experience the other side of the 2010 quarterback controversy.

  9. 9 TommyLawlor said at 10:46 PM on October 13th, 2013:

I doubt Chip would do that, but never say never.

I have no idea what Mike would say. He’s been totally cooperative with both Reid and Kelly, through thick and thin. I just don’t know that he’d be thrilled with that role.

  10. 10 fran35 said at 11:16 PM on October 13th, 2013:

I think Vick would be a good soldier, but what would Marcus do? He may implode on Twitter?
Side question: How bad has Damaris Johnson looked this year as KR? His decision making is horrible

  11. 11 BlindChow said at 11:36 PM on October 13th, 2013:

I think he was decent up until this game.

  12. 12 Corry said at 10:38 PM on October 13th, 2013:

I wonder if Murray and Ware will be out next week. If Ware is out, that leaves the Cowboys extremely thin at the Dline.

This is also an extremely sloppy game. Seems like there’s a flag on the play every other play.

  13. 13 GEAGLE said at 8:25 AM on October 14th, 2013:

HUGE if ware and Murry don’t play…absolutely huge!!! St Nick is beating the cowboys regardless who plays, but these injuries make things much better for us

  14. 14 Donald Kalinowski said at 10:42 PM on October 13th, 2013:

The Skins defense gave up two TDs already but I feel like their defense has been playing well. Seeing them has made me realize that Billy Davis is uncreative in his playcalling and blitz schemes. Maybe he’s just here to teach the base 34 and the team will look for a better DC once they bring in better players.

  15. 15 TommyLawlor said at 10:47 PM on October 13th, 2013:

Also realize the Skins have had the same DC for 4 yrs. That makes a huge difference. System is totally set.

  16. 16 D3FB said at 12:06 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Exactly. Much easier to add a handful of flavor of the week plays when 70% of the players are experienced with the playbook. Much different to try to do when you have players that may still not have a firm grasp on the nuances of each play design.

  17. 17 livingonapear said at 10:50 PM on October 13th, 2013:

I didn’t really get a chance to see RGIII play last year, so this game has been a lot of fun. He understands the read option better than Vick does, he’s more playful with it, and understands how to use the fakes more to his advantage.

I see a lot of similarities between him and Mariotta, though RGIII is more fluid.

  18. 18 Media Mike said at 5:56 AM on October 14th, 2013:

RGKnee is also the example of why called runs by QBs in the read-option dooms the system.

  19. 19 livingonapear said at 6:17 AM on October 14th, 2013:

No, he’s an example of why you should spring for a good groundskeeping crew.

QBs tear ACLs in the pocket too and if they are smart and know how to make good reads, get out of bounds, and slide, then they can run the system. It doesn’t doom the read option, it’s a complication.

  20. 20 Donald Kalinowski said at 10:51 PM on October 13th, 2013:

I didn’t want the Eagles to bench Vick this year because I didn’t think he deserved it. If he was healthy today I would have started him.

After today, I think Nick Foles should start. He played well and deserves another chance. I don’t think the team is much better with him replacing Vick, but it doesn’t matter to me since Vick isn’t a long term answer.

  21. 21 Insomniac said at 10:52 PM on October 13th, 2013:

Foles made Cooper look good or Jonathan Banks deserved to drop in the draft. I prefer to feign ignorance and believe Banks is horrible.

  22. 22 D3FB said at 12:04 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Banks did run an a 4.61 at the combine. Riley ran a 4.53. Throw in Banks being a rookie, and being really light for his size, smart money would’ve been to expect Riley to have a good day.

  23. 23 Anders said at 10:09 AM on October 14th, 2013:

4.61 is terrible slow for a CB. We think Poyer is slow at 4.55

  24. 24 D3FB said at 11:53 AM on October 14th, 2013:

That’s why he went from being regarded as one of the top few corners to the third round. I forget who it was but somebody, a former scout/coach, talked about how when they were still in the league their staff did an analysis and it showed that the corners who don’t run in the 4.4 range don’t pan out at any kind of acceptable rate.

  25. 25 anon said at 10:13 AM on October 14th, 2013:

and they played soft zone all day. And he’s got a staph infection. Should have done deeper analysis before setting my fantasy roster this week.

  26. 26 holeplug said at 9:55 AM on October 14th, 2013:

    rookie corners are usually bad

  27. 27 Anders said at 10:08 AM on October 14th, 2013:

As D3FB said, Banks is also way to slow I mean Riley Cooper managed to out run him.

  28. 28 Donald Kalinowski said at 11:00 PM on October 13th, 2013:

Miles Austin…You used to be so good.

  29. 29 shah8 said at 11:12 PM on October 13th, 2013:

I wish SNF took dissecting the secondary, beyond giving Car so much credit, a little more seriously.

  30. 30 aj said at 11:42 PM on October 13th, 2013:

    Re: Bill Davis comment below

I’ve been saying the same thing. His blitzs are so vanilla that they are picked up REALLY easily. The talent level of our defense isn’t really that bad. We are excellent against the run with Barwin & Cole as the OLB. But we’re horrible against the pass. Couple reasons. One is terrible safety play. The other is bad play calling. The coverage/blitz combos are really wierd more times.than not. i meen his blitz he draws up night hit 1 out of 10

  31. 31 philip said at 12:00 AM on October 14th, 2013:

i agree with 99% of this statement AJ. But Billy has used stunts and some variations. Will be interesting to see how this progresses. Witten always runs that out route almost like a reverse/deeper quick slant (or shallow flag)…those slants have killed us this year. id stick kendricks on witten all game. heck, maybe even boykin once in a while.

  32. 32 philip said at 11:55 PM on October 13th, 2013:

Vick is of course more dynamic, but Foles, with the small sample size we have, gets the ball to ALL of his options, keeps the D honest because of this, and is good in the RZ. They said this was the best secondary they have faced and he delivered big time. If he plays vs dallas and performs the same way, he should be the starter going forward.

  33. 33 phillychuck said at 12:23 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Kelly has a rep as someone who thinks outside the box. There has to be a way to use 2 good QBs to take advantage of their respective strengths.

Next week Foles, though. Vick’s still going to be hurting from that hammy.

  34. 34 jackpotsdad said at 2:55 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Man, I think I’ll avoid all the other Eagle fan sites this week. The Foles vs. Vick debate is getting ridiculous. I want the EAGLES to win. I think both players are capable of starters and I want the player who gives the Eagles the best chance to get the W. As a fan, I think a professional coach > football fan as an evaluator of talent. That’s what they’re paid to do. I completely defer to the coaching staff as to who starts since they are looking at game film with an expert set of eyes and see how they do in practices while we don’t.

I really disdain fans who think winning an Internet debate can somehow influence a coach’s professional opinion. That’s just nuts.

  35. 35 Finlay Jones said at 5:19 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Firstly, no one thinks the debate is changing the coaches
mind. Secondly, coaches make wrong personnel decisions, ALL THE TIME.

  36. 36 bentheimmigrant said at 7:38 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Indeed. The question is which QB does Kelly think will run his O best the way he wants it run. And since we don’t know how weighs different factors (i.e. the strengths and weaknesses of each QB), we can’t pretend like one area where Foles is better trumps an area where Vick is, or vice versa. This O has looked good under both at times, and now it’s up to Kelly to decide which skill set he wants the most.

  37. 37 deg0ey said at 3:52 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Does anyone have an update on the status of Vick’s injury?
I think if he’s ready to go next week then he gets the start. It doesn’t seem Kelly’s way to put so much emphasis on one game that Foles can be the starter off of it.
The ‘ideal’ situation from a making the best decision point of view would be for Vick to miss next week through injury and then get another look at Foles. A couple of games is still not the best sample size, but it’ll give the coaches a little more to go on.

  38. 38 Media Mike said at 5:59 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Vick will be “hurt” until Foles plays poorly. I know that is a cynic’s view, but I bet they go for the cop out method for at least one or two more weeks.

  39. 39 anon said at 8:12 AM on October 14th, 2013:

I think Foles starts and we see Vick if we’re losing at half time.

  41. 41 eagleyankfan said at 8:26 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Not according to Chip. Once a qb is named, you don’t flip/flop on performance during a game. That is IF Chip is true to his word.

  42. 42 anon said at 8:41 AM on October 14th, 2013:

that’s how i’m reading Vick being active as the “emergency QB” yesterday.

  43. 43 eagleyankfan said at 8:58 AM on October 14th, 2013:

I think only if Foles got hurt. He wasn’t going to get pulled.

  44. 44 Anders said at 9:01 AM on October 14th, 2013:

emergency was if both Foles and Barkley got hurt

  45. 45 hrtak said at 4:54 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Buffalo Bills Thadd Lewis is injured and they will take Matt Flynn for tryout. What about trading Vick+7th rd pick to Bills for Jairus Byrd? Both team can help themselves 🙂

  46. 46 Media Mike said at 5:58 AM on October 14th, 2013:

IF the Eagles were inclined to trade Vick AND a team wanted him, it would have to be a playoff team that needs to keep themselves in the playoff race, not Buffalo.

  47. 47 anon said at 8:11 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Sadly i don’t think a trade makes any sense.

  55. 55 eagleyankfan said at 7:25 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Boy — what a game from Nate Allen. If it wasn’t for the blurred visions of him missing tackles/taking bad angles in the back round of some of plays, I would have thought he wasn’t at the game.

  56. 56 eagleyankfan said at 7:27 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Debate? There’s still needs to be a debate? Fine, I’ll start one. Start Vick!!! This way, in 2 weeks, we’ll see Foles in AGAIN, after Vick gets hurt AGAIN. It’s that simple, I really don’t see why we need a debate. I love history and repeating it is my favorite thing.

  57. 57 eagleyankfan said at 7:41 AM on October 14th, 2013:

It’s early — so I’ll start the slinging… Foles can’t throw deep. Wait, was that bomb to Cooper for a TD? Foles can’t handle this offense because you need a “mobile” qb. Wait, did Foles just do a qb draw for a TD? I don’t know though — Foles wasn’t “lights out”. Was that another red zone TD to DJ? I mean, he was only 22/31, 3td and 1 rushing. Ok, enough joking around. Foles was very solid. It was a very good 1st time start after his first week of practicing with the ones. That’s all it was. Its what should be a building block for the young man. That was a VERY good defense team and Foles handled it with maturity and poise. You can’t say Foles can only go up from here. He’ll still have bumps(if he’s ever given the chance to start again) along the road. The game, at times, would still be “fast” where he panics(I’m sure), but for right now — Cheers Foles on a game played well.

  58. 58 eagleyankfan said at 7:48 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Interesting(and maybe someone pointed this out already) that the announcers said that Wash had to save money by cutting good players from special teams. Sure looked like they paid the price last night. Chip puts a lot of stock in special teams(so he says). It’s good hear. Second point. Wash seemed a LOT better on defense. Cowgirls > 200 passing yards. > 50 rushing. I get their rb was hurt, but still, those are impressive numbers. Dez, arguably, the best WR in the nfl held to 36 yards? Where was Witten? This was a different D than before their by week.

  59. 59 anon said at 8:08 AM on October 14th, 2013:

I read that since they were winning they basically shut down the offense. I find it hard to believe that DeAngelo hall could cover Dez all game. But when you have 14 ST points vs. a QB that only put up 300yds (no TDs 2 turnovers) total offense you don’t need to go crazy.

  60. 60 eagleyankfan said at 8:18 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Cowboys did play conservative in the second half. Almost too much. Still 8 targets, 5 catches 36 yards is pedestrian for Dez.

  63. 63 GEAGLE said at 8:23 AM on October 14th, 2013:

As one of the founding fathers of team St. Nick….Mike has to get the job back when he is healthy…shocked to hear this coming from me? Its pretty simple…you can go back to FOles if Vick stinks it up(which as a FOles fan I Know it’s just a matter of time)….But if you bench Mike now, there is no turning back…..and for me that’s fine. Turn it over to FOles and see what he can do I with the rest of the year, but Chip isn’t thinking like that. I hate watching Vick play ad I Know Nick is the TRUTH, but Vick has been a class act, a good soldier, benching him now really ruins his career, and he deserves better then that..

FOles must play against Dallas, but when Vick is healthy you have to give him his job back, but with a very short leash….Mike won’t run the offense as well as FOles…..our run game can be effective without Vick, so a QB who can make the right accurate passes is better then what Vick brings to the table, but it’s too early to ruin Vicks career, he deserves better….so while I know it’s not what’s best for the team, Vick deserves better so he will be given the rope he needs to Hang itself, and then the FOles era begins.
    ….
Vick will only play two more games as an eagle….enjoy it Vick fanboys

  64. 64 eagleyankfan said at 8:37 AM on October 14th, 2013:

I hear what you’re saying — but, according to Chip, he doesn’t bench his “named” starter for poor performance. That’s where Chip is now in a bind. He can name Vick the starter(wait — ruin his career? what career?) but what happens if Vick starts vs. Dallas/Giants — plays poorly and loses? The fan base will lynch him.

  65. 65 anon said at 8:39 AM on October 14th, 2013:

same will happen if foles loses.

  66. 66 eagleyankfan said at 8:45 AM on October 14th, 2013:

why? Foles is in a different place. He’s basically a rookie. You have to account growing pains with him.

  67. 67 anon said at 9:06 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Nah, if Foles is in there to win games and take the job then he’s gotta win games and take the job. B/c if he loses a winnable game the conversation will be “should have played Vick”. Given the way we look I dont see any reason why we shouldn’t play for the playoffs.

  68. 68 eagleyankfan said at 9:16 AM on October 14th, 2013:

So you’re asking to name a starter and have him be perfect the rest of the season? P. Manning can’t do that. If you play like Schaub — yes, bench. But 1 game doesn’t make you bench worthy. But, after Foles performance, if you yank him and start Vick and Vick “lose” a la Romo, that’s not a good place to be in. I can’t sit here and say Foles would have had a better start than Vick. Foles could have started 0-4. We don’t know that. We can then say, if Foles starts and loses “a la” Romo that Vick would have won the game. We wouldn’t know that either.

  69. 69 anon said at 9:37 AM on October 14th, 2013:

If Vick plays poorly bench him. No one disputes that. But there was a QB competition, Vick one. He’s played well. If Nick crushes it in Dallas i think that’s a better test than playing against the Bucks, who have good personnel on D, but has a host of other problems.

  70. 70 fran35 said at 10:12 AM on October 14th, 2013:

I agree about everything you said with the exception of the Dallas game being a better barometer. That Tampa defense was legit, probably one of the better defenses we will play this year. They are broken on offense, no doubt. But that D is GOOD. They can really get after the QB as well. Dallas defense is not good. Not as bad as us, but not good. Looking at the two defenses, I would expect Foles to perform better against Dallas. Now, does the team win–not so sure. But QB performance wise, Dallas should be easier.
As for replacing Vic, I like Foles and have been on the bandwagon since last year. However, Vick needs to start when healthy. If and when Vick plays poorly and the team is falling out of contention, put Foles in with no fear of a short leash and see if he develops.
Its the fair thing to do to both players.

It was wrong how Reid flip flopped with Vick/Kolb. Wouldn’t it be ironic if Vick loses his job to injury after gaining the job from Kolb in the same way?

  71. 71 eagleyankfan said at 9:17 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Eagles/Vick/Foles are in a different place than “let’s win now”. They are trying to build for the future — and win at the same time. IF Foles and Vick give you the same chance of winning, why wouldn’t you play Foles because he’s more of the future than Vick.

  72. 72 bbbulka said at 8:46 AM on October 14th, 2013:

but vick had played bad only against unbeatable teams, against very huge opponents like chiefs and broncos.. he was fantastic vs WAS and made career game vs SD.. oh, maybe, he wasn’t?? )))

  73. 73 bdbd20 said at 8:31 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Jeff Garcia (yes, he’s still fiery) made some insightful comments this morning on NFL AM.

He basically said that Foles takes what the defense gives him. He particularly mentioned the TD run and the first TD to DJax.

On the run, there was no defender to account for the QB sneak, so Nick took it. On the pass, the safety bit on the TE, Nick read it, and there was no help for Revis in the back of the endzone.

The point was to just run the offense. The QB does not need to be superman. Read your keys and execute the design of the play.

  74. 74 Anders said at 8:50 AM on October 14th, 2013:

The QB just needs to be a like a point guard in basketball. Give the playmakers a chance to make a play.

  75. 75 eagleyankfan said at 9:03 AM on October 14th, 2013:

you saying Nick called the QB sneak himself after reading the D? Interesting. I thought it was designed play call from the beginning. I’m curious as well to know that call.

  76. 76 bdbd20 said at 9:09 AM on October 14th, 2013:

Not necessarily. I’m assuming that it was a read based on the numbers in the box. Jeffy pointed out that the formation dictated where the safeties/LB’s played.

TB had to commit to the middle or the outside. They chose the outside, leaving no protection over the middle.

  77. 77 Ben Hert said at 9:11 AM on October 14th, 2013:

I agree with that last statement, to an extent. I think that most teams in the NFL have some type of hole in their defense that a smart coach can exploit (RE: Chippah). And he does a great job at that. You use the personnel and formations that give you the best chance to exploit that team’s holes. Nick does this brilliantly.

Now, the issue for me is, what happens when you run into a team that doesn’t really have those holes? What happens when you run into the Seahawks/49er’s in the playoffs, or the Bronco’s in the superbowl? What happens when they can match up with your playmakers no matter what personnel you throw out there? The only real solution to this is to have a TOP tier QB. You can’t just take what the defense gives you against teams like that since they usually don’t give you much, you just have to purely outplay them at every position, QB included. This is my only reservation about Nick OR Vick at QB. Neither of them are that quality QB, and I don’t think they will ever be. I just feel like we are treading water at this point until we find one. Nick Foles is great for getting you into the playoffs and a 9/10/11 win season if you surround him with talent, but he just isn’t the kind of guy who is going to take you all the way.

Color me stupid, but for some reason, I feel like Barkley might have what it takes to do this. I’m still extremely high on him, even though he’s dropped of the face of the Earth/Eastern Pennsylvania. I think the best course of action after this year is to just move on from Vick, give Barkley and Foles the chance to duke it out in 2014, and invest heavily on a talented QB in the draft, so we can get this whole QB musical chairs game over with and focus on bringing a Lombardi to Philly.

In that situation, I think you have to win the matchups. If a team has the personnel and scheme to win matchups against DJax, Ertz, Shady, etc, then we have to get better players.

I do think Nick’s height gives him a nice advantage in reading the safties.

If nothing else, I’d like to see more of Foles. Let’s see if he can be consistent over a 6 game stretch.

Just wondering why a young QB has to be consistent for 6 games? Foles has a TON to learn. Vick/Foles have to be judged at different levels because they are at different point of their careers. If Foles has 3 good and 3 bad games, what would that mean? If you name Foles the starter, he starts the rest of the season(unless he pulls a Schaub :))

I’m not saying that 6 games is enough to judge him, but it is a nice sample size. DC’s will have tape on him in this offense. They will change things up.

He’ll have to adjust. I’d expect a 2nd year QB to be able to make the mental adjustments. He should be used to NFL speed by now.

True — but he hasn’t been playing for two years. You nailed though. He hasn’t seen teams adjust for him yet. Nor, Chip’s adjustments to those adjustments. Fun times ahead….

I’ll admit — so far — DJ has proven me wrong. He’s been playing very well.

This is the player we all thought he could be. Also nice to see him have a good game with Foles and going up against a quality CB. This was normally one of those games where he would disappear.

This just makes me angry at Reid for only really using Jackson on go routes and a decoy.

Yeah Dwayne Bowe is the new DJax. Kelly actually took DJax off Revis island by putting him in the slot.

I was so excited seeing him targeted in the RZ.

yea. I still think off what this offense would be with Maclin instead of Cooper.
Sure the run game might suffer a few yards because of blocking, but the passing game would be so much better.

Did Andy make DJ ineffective, or is Vick the problem? With Vick all Desean does is catch deep balls and one come back route per game….with FOles in the game,nDesean looks like a well rounded WR..

So before last night, the most anyone had scored on TB was 23, and that was NE…

Nick Foles: Better than Tom Brady.
