NYG 12, PHI 0 – 2nd Half

Posted: October 27th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 399 Comments »

Mike Vick is out and Matt Barkley is in. Vick really struggled. He didn’t look healthy and was hesitant with his reads. The offense struggled so Chip Kelly replaced him with Barkley late in the 2nd Qtr.

Barkley then led the Eagles right down the field. Unfortunately he made a horrible decision in the Red Zone and held the ball way too long. He was sacked, fumbled and the Giants recovered.

Barkley was 6-7-55. The offense came to life with him in the game. Was that a fluke or can he keep the offense going in the 2nd half?

This is still a very winnable game. The Eagles get the ball to open and a TD could really change things.

Barkley has to be smart in the Red Zone. Can’t force things. Might help if Chip Kelly ran the ball and gave Shady a chance to make a play down there.

I won’t believe Barkley can complete a scoring drive until it actually happens.

  2. 2 DarthBanner said at 2:36 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Awful job by Kelly at the end of the half. Run the damn ball on 1st and goal from the 2 with 1 minute left and 2 timeouts. Why is he in such a hurry to give the ball back to the giants with time left to do something, especially when the eagles get the ball to start the half? If he just manages the situation correctly his rookie QB isn’t in a position to make the critical error.

Remember NO last year? Reid was worse… Passing on your first down shouldn’t be a crime.

I feel like Chip has lost confidence in the run today. Seems like he’s gotten away from it and honestly I’m not sure I blame him. OL has not been opening up anything for anyone.

  7. 7 Allen3000 said at 2:36 PM on October 27th, 2013:

I’m really disappointed in Chip’s play calling there at the 2 yard line. Sure, Barkley held on to the ball too long, but seriously, hand the freakin’ ball off to McCoy or somebody on 1st down. Don’t get cute. You’re down 12-0, you need those points. Ugh.

  8. 8 T_S_O_P said at 2:37 PM on October 27th, 2013:

If the Giants have to respect the pass, maybe we can run??? The last game and a half, must be the longest ever we have had with completely ineffective QB play since the Brad Goebel era! 🙁

  9. 9 BlindChow said at 2:38 PM on October 27th, 2013:

It depends on who’s making the tackles. If it’s defensive linemen beating their blocks, then a competent passing game won’t make a difference.

  10. 10 A_T_G said at 2:38 PM on October 27th, 2013:

And if they don’t have to respect the pass in the second half, the G.J. Kinne era can begin. Win, win, really.

  12. 12 BobSmith77 said at 2:38 PM on October 27th, 2013:

This is basically the first ‘gut check’ for the Eagles this year. Curious to see how they respond in the 2nd half especially on opening drive where the O-line got outmuscled and manhandled in the 1st half.

  13. 13 BlindChow said at 2:39 PM on October 27th, 2013:

I think Barkley gave them a spark going into half time, even with the fumble.

  162. 162 Jerry Goldstein said at 3:11 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Why is Kelly calling read-option plays with a non-mobile QB?

  163. 163 SteveH said at 3:12 PM on October 27th, 2013:

  164. 164 shah8 said at 3:13 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Because if you can’t get more than about five to ten yards, the defense is more than happy to have extra opportunities to hit the QBs. Only really works if the defense is afraid of 15-25-+ runs.

  165. 165 SteveH said at 3:14 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Quarterback sneak will work too, you know…

Sometimes, just sometimes, you really might want to run the offense with the QB behind center. You don’t have the options available at WR, and you don’t have the mobility at QB to manipulate d-box setup, to go shotgun everytime.

  167. 167 GermanEagle said at 3:14 PM on October 27th, 2013:

  174. 174 ACViking said at 3:22 PM on October 27th, 2013:

It’s all about a running QB, apparently.

  185. 185 ACViking said at 3:16 PM on October 27th, 2013:

    Tell that to the genius

  187. 187 SteveH said at 3:18 PM on October 27th, 2013:

OK, Chip Kelly’s assertion is that TOP is overrated because what actually matters is the number of snaps that really matters, because if a team like the Giants is taking the clock down to 1 before every snap, is the defense working during that time? Snaps are the guaranteed work, which is why he is preoccupied with that stat as opposed to TOP. Kelly is not saying he is not worried about his defense getting tired, he is saying that the metric that measures that is snaps, not time of possession.

Seriously, some of you guys need to relax. Not making the playoffs is good news. For a minute I was worried we would sneak in because the NFC East is so dreadful. Now we’ll have a top-15 pick at a minimum, and no delusions about our QB situation. Hopefully Foles get better, and we can run with him rest of the season to “see what we have there.”

Does Tommy need to pull out the “1st year head coach records” statistic again?

    Also, LOLGiants.

It’s been said over an over again that the team would not be judged on wins and losses, but on other factors like the “eye test”, week to week progress, seeing if Chip’s system will work.

The strong reactions are due largely to the low grades the Eagles are earning in those factors. Especially the progress category, as we’re seeing pretty severe regression that last couple weeks.

  339. 339 xeynon said at 4:05 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Time to accept that this team is not good enough to make the playoffs. This season should be all about trying to develop young players and build a winning culture. Veterans who are not part of the future (Vick, Avant, Allen, Celek, etc.) should not be getting the bulk of the playing time and interfering with the opportunity to evaluate and/or develop younger players like Foles, Barkley, Johnson, Wolff, and Ertz. Roseman should be working the phones in advance of the trade deadline on Tuesday looking to see if he can get anything in exchange for older players like Vick and Ryans. The coaching staff should still be trying to win but not at the expense of the future, because that only makes the day on which we actually will win farther off.

  340. 340 GEAGLE said at 4:11 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Trent Cole should be the first name you listed….not good enough to play the most important role on a defense

  341. 341 xeynon said at 4:17 PM on October 27th, 2013:

I absolutely agree with you in terms of where he stands as a player – he’d be better off playing out his career as a situational pass rusher in a 4-3 defense. However, his contract makes him prohibitively expensive to trade right now, and we could probably use the cap space in the off-season.

  342. 342 GEAGLE said at 4:20 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Bench him and play Graham every snap the rest of the way

  343. 343 xeynon said at 4:21 PM on October 27th, 2013:

I wouldn’t be opposed to that.

  344. 344 BobSmith77 said at 4:22 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Cole isn’t playing well but why bench him at this point though especially for a guy who can’t cover (Graham)? Both guys are leftover pieces that are out of place in his defensive scheme.

  345. 345 Dr. Claw said at 4:15 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Foles and Barkley can both be gone as far as I’m concerned… their ceilings don’t go above “backup”. You could probably get more for Foles than Vick at this point… if only Andy Reid’s flair for “persuasion” remained.

  346. 346 xeynon said at 4:20 PM on October 27th, 2013:

I suspect you’re probably right about Foles and Barkley. I’d put both of them more in the “evaluation” category than the “development” one. The probability is high the team will be looking to draft a QB high next April, but we might as well have as much information on the guys already on the roster as possible.

  347. 347 GEAGLE said at 4:23 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Oh we are judging Barkley already now? Hahahahah
    ….
The knock on him was week arm,,,now that he is throwing with zip, 5 quarters was enough to tell you that Barkley is a bum?
    ….
Yo think Marriotta won’t have 5 bad quarters? Lol

  348. 348 BobSmith77 said at 4:07 PM on October 27th, 2013:

I am surprised the Eagles were able to keep the Giants out of the end zone though and keep Hicks/Cruz in relative check.

Cox continues to play pretty well up front, Allen had a few big hits on crucial 3rd down plays today, and Fletcher had another strong game regardless of how he was matched up against.

  349. 349 Dr. Claw said at 4:13 PM on October 27th, 2013:

Yeah. There were a couple of times I was wary that they might but the Giants either shot themselves in the foot, or pressure was good enough for Eli to miss his target.

(not necessarily talking wins and losses but I just don’t like what I see for both now and the future)

  358. 358 BobSmith77 said at 4:12 PM on October 27th, 2013:

They simply need better decision-making out of Barkley next week if he is going to be the starter and adjustments in play-calling because teams aren’t going to respect Barkley taking the ball in the read option.

It really hurts the Eagles though right now that they don’t any receiver that teams respect 10+ yards down the field and no decent RB to give McCoy a breather.

  359. 359 Dr. Claw said at 4:13 PM on October 27th, 2013:

The Eagles defense was in classic “bend but don’t break mode”. Continuous improvement?

    But the offense…

    1) Vick had no business starting. He was not even 70%.
    2) Barkley is not ready for prime time. His worst offense isn’t the turnovers, it’s the holding on to the ball. He’s actually the worst on the roster in regards to that.
    3) Chip Kelly had no business calling read options with a QB who can’t run it. Barkley had 1st down if he keeps the ball several times today.

All of these point to Chip as the reason the Eagles lose another game at home. He’s fortunate that this is his first season here. Hopefully the Eagles can draft a QB appropriate to Chip’s vision… who is durable.

  366. 366 mhrinda said at 4:26 PM on October 27th, 2013:

I don’t like Chips style. He coaches very timidly, He is restrained and very conservative in his play calling, He is very vanilla as a coach, Lack of talent sure but I just don’t like what he’s doing. Failed a couple of times on short 3rd down running plays to generate any kind of push where a 1st down would have made a crucial difference including the drive right before the half. There isn’t a single play or side the Eagles can rush right now on 3rd and short and have much confidence in picking up a 1st down.

Kelly seemed to really hang on the ‘instability at QB due to health reasons’ in the post-game as a reason why the Eagles are struggling so much and used it in several answers.

If Barkley is named the starter next week (and I think he will be simply because he is the only healthy QB on the roster), I want to see how Kelly responds including making adjustments to better suit the plays to Barkley and his seeming inability/discomfort in running with the ball next week.

Tommy – Any idea who many multiple TE sets the Eagles have used his year vs NFL average? I would love to see that stat and what the Eagles have done out of it. Ertz seemed like he was ‘MIA’ again this week and wasn’t on the field for even 50% of the snaps.

The Eagles do not have a chance without trading for anything better at WR.

    Bryce Brown:

    38 carriers, 98 yards, 0 TDs; 4 catches, 48 yds

Getting less and less carries and snaps each week despite Polk being hurt. Dude sucks and increasingly has been seeking to avoid contact.

I really wouldn’t mind if the Eagles sign another RB and give him some carries because letting Brown touch the ball is a waste of a play right now.

This may not be a good scheme for him.

Just about every play starts with him running laterally.

Put him in the I-formation and he’d be a more productive runner.

BUT all that aside . . . didn’t Roseman and Kelly see this problem in the off-season film review and during TC?

Moreover, he still — since age 18 — doesn’t have one-year’s worth of carries by a full-time RB.

Maybe but he hasn’t shown any ability to make good reads in between the T and hit holes quickly which would be a huge issue out of an I-formation of a split-back formation.

    TOTALLY AGREE!!!

The game is still too fast for his eyes to get the right cuts to his feet.

haha please. What is he supposed to do he gets 4 snaps a game. You think he’s going to bust it for 30 yd plays? RBs need a rhythm. And to be fair look at shady’s numbers the last couple of weeks.

Most frustrating Giants’ loss in a quite a while. Giants went really conservative on offense and defense and just avoided any killer screwups except the shoddy snap by DeOssie. Even had a ton of penalties today too (11-92 yards) and were only 8-19 on 3rd down conversion with stall outs every time in the red zone.

This was 1972 Eagles’ football . . . if that good.

Too bad the NFL didn’t have the Eagles play KC on the first MNF broadcast.

I think Kelly could’ve won that game. Might have delayed the inevitable run up the learning curve by NFL D-coordinators.
