Sloppy, but intense 1st half. Drew Brees threw 2 picks. The Eagles run game was stagnant. Both defenses are playing well.

The Eagles get the ball to start the 2nd half. Key thing is for Chip and Pat to figure out the run game. Maybe they’ll go more from shotgun.

Bill Davis needs to pat his guys on the back and say “More, please.”

If they’re stopping the run, you’d think the outs and deep passes would be available, yet we seem to be throwing only over the middle. The screens have all been disasters. Not sure why we aren’t seeing deeper passes.

My point has been about the game as a whole. They have racked up yards on us and we forced two turnovers after long drives that has kept the game close but we need to force a few short drives for the Saints and slow their offense down.

It was a good year, i was expecting 6 wins and struggles with only a few bright spots. Instead we got 10 wins and generally decent play with some struggles. Not bad for a young team with a new HC who had to retool the defense and make up for some bad draft classes.

This DL just didn’t show up again tonight and really closed the season on a down note playing poorly 3 of the last 4 weeks. No pass rush this week and got destroyed in the running game tonight.

When it really matters, our DL and linebackers can only *almost* get where they need to be. This looied a lot like the Minn game; a lot of defenders around Brees, arms up, about to get the strip, there goes the ball for a sizeable gain. This offense has players you can rely on to come through. The defense itself does not. This needs to be addressed. If it helps to get Roc Charmichael and Chung off this team, I will pitch in for their plane tickets.

Still, that is exactly what it is. Remember that little number the NBC commentators showed? 16-195 or something like that for road teams turning the ball over? Now it’s 17. And it could be argued that the only reason there needed to be a last minute field goal was because the best corner got hurt.
Talent is Talent is Talent. Alex Smith had four TDs. But he disappeared when his team needed him most. In the playoffs, what matters is the ability to make plays, in spite of it all. It’s not the whole game of football. But it’s the magical part. Plenty of those people on the sidelines probably do think they’d have done better with Vick. Not that it matters, since we don’t have the horses on defense for a real run.
When this weekend started, Mike Tanier, in his playoff preview, mentioned Trent Green as having run something similar, or have had similar numbers, but when the playoffs rolled around, he was 0-2. If you don’t believe me, I bet watching Andy Dalton make what should be a blowout into a close game might introduce more doubts.

Foles is young. This was his first playoff game, and he played well enough to put them in position to win against what is top-to-bottom a more talented opponent. We’re going to need to see more of him before we can declare him good enough, but so far he’s given us no reason to doubt him.

Foles – took too many sacks in the first half on what should have been quick throwaways.
Cooper – big drop on third down (did the saints turn that into points?)
Defense – the DL got beat in the trenches. gotta be able to stop the QB sneak one out of the 5 times they tried it.
Special Teams – missed FG, poor distance on kickoffs, poor coverage.

Disappointing loss, but let’s be honest: this team’s defense was going to get it knocked out of the playoffs sooner or later. It turned out to be sooner. Special teams let us down too (missed FG, big return on that last kickoff).
They’re one of the youngest teams in the league and they have some great pieces in place, especially on offense. They know what they need to work on on the other side of the ball. The future is bright, finally.

I think a truly disruptive outside pass rusher, a playmaking safety, and additional cornerback help are bigger needs on defense… the earlier wild card game turned around with that Mathis strip sack, and we don’t have a guy who consistently makes plays like that. I love me some Trent Cole, but he’s a high-effort guy who gets his sacks by fighting through blocks when the coverage is good, not a guy who beats offensive linemen with natural ability. As for Connor Barwin, he’s an excellent all-around OLB, but not a fearful pass rusher either. A guy like Vic Beasley is what the team should be looking at.

Beasley can put on weight with NFL training methods. Von Miller was pretty much the same size when he came out. I look for proven playmaking ability first and foremost. Jeffcoat would be okay, but I’m not sure about his ability in coverage. Ealy from what I know is all natural ability. little production. Scared of guys like that.
As for the CBs, I don’t think a Williams/Fletcher/Boykin trio is good enough. BB is excellent, but the other two are just average starters with above average toughness. Definitely can be upgraded.
And I’d be careful with the “we’re a contender, we need to fill needs” talk. That kind of thinking was what led to the downfall of the Andy Reid regime. Drafting BPA and making smart, good fit FA signings like Barwin is what helped the team turn around so fast. I’d like to see more of that approach.

Disappointed the Eagles weren’t able to exploit matchups though in the 1st half a bit more especially Harper. Really need an upgrade over Avant. Painfully slow. A big physical WR who can’t be banged around in man coverage either would be huge.

Disappointed in shady and the run game, but JP,Kelce,Todd should all be better next year after getting over the injury…and Lane will improve drastically. Still expected more of an advantage today on both sides of the run game and that’s the difference in the game

At the end I was literally screaming for the D to let them in at the end. This game was going to be won or lost by Foles not out soft defense. Giving up 5-6 yards a clip when there are 3 players in the backfiels is a recipe for disaster, and the defense let it happen ALL GAME. I was ecstatic they got turnovers in the first half, but poor execution down he strecth will not a playoff game win you.
The offense SHOULD have executed better at many crucial moments in the game (heres looking at you Riley Cooper. As an aside, I was behind Cooper but after tonight I would love nothing more than an upgrade on him and avant), but I believe the odds would have been better for us with our offense on the field with a chance for the W than the Saints ST. It’s a madden strategy if there ever was one, but maybe, just maybe, had we let them in I ould not have this pitiful feeling in my gut. Oh well, I suppose its better than the crap stew I have been eating since 2010. Here’s to a strong (get Chung and Henery on the next plane to Canada strong? I sure hope so) Offseason.
