Anthony Barr, CJ Spiller…Big Rumor Day

Posted: April 14th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 84 Comments »

The most interesting nugget of the day comes from Geoff Mosher. He reported on Monday that the Eagles called Buffalo to inquire about C.J. Spiller.

Before they traded for Darren Sproles, the Eagles first tried to add a younger, more dynamic weapon to their offense.

The Eagles contacted the Bills this offseason with hopes of trading for versatile Pro Bowl running back C.J. Spiller, according to two league sources familiar with the situation. The Bills weren’t interested in moving Spiller, both sources said, and talks never heightened into an offer.

But it’s clear that the Eagles were looking to add a different dimension to their offense as they prepared to part ways with Pro Bowl wideout DeSean Jackson, another indication that Chip Kelly had planned to move on from Jackson well before the team released him March 28.

Spiller would be an ideal player for Kelly and his offense. Spiller can be a WR or RB. And he has explosive speed. He is a home run threat any time he touches the ball.

It sounds like the Eagles called to see if Spiller was available, not that the Bills were shopping him. It can’t hurt to ask, but obviously the idea got shot down pretty quickly.

It is interesting to find out that Kelly wanted a dynamic receiving RB. The Sproles addition seemed like just an opportunistic move. Asking about Spiller shows you that Kelly wanted that kind of a specific player.

Tim McManus posted another interesting nugget. He reported that OLB Anthony Barr will be coming to Philly for a pre-draft visit. Within that piece, there is another bit of news I wasn’t aware of.

In a recent podcast on the team’s website, Brian Baldinger said that Eagles outside linebackers coach Bill McGovern went to UCLA to work Barr out.

“Say he’s there at 15 or 16. And I’m well aware that the Eagles only have six draft picks, they don’t have a whole lot of ammunition. But if that’s your biggest glaring need — and to me, the right outside linebacker position would complete this defense in some ways — why wouldn’t you be aggressive?” Baldinger asked.

So we now have Bill McGovern going to West Va to work out Will Clarke, a mid-rounder, and going to UCLA to work out Barr, a 1st rounder. Interesting.

I’m sure the Eagles do have serious interest in Barr. He is the kind of OLB I think they would love. Barr is 6-5, 255. He is an athletic edge rusher, but can also cover and play in space. Chip will have some knowledge of Barr from his Oregon days. He might have even recruited Barr a few years back.

If Barr falls far enough, I’d move up for him. The problem is that I just don’t expect Barr to fall that far.

* * * * *

Jimmy Bama has a good nugget of his own. He says that the Eagles have shown serious interest in OLB prospect Ronald Powell from Florida. The former No. 1 high school player in the country didn’t have the college career that he expected.

Powell is an intriguing prospect. His college career hit a bump when he tore his ACL during the spring of 2012. Powell missed the entire 2012 season, but returned in 2013, when he had 4 sacks. Unless you’re Adrian Peterson, there’s a belief that it takes 2 years or longer to fully recover from a torn ACL.

Powell would be a mid-to-late round pick, but would be a good target. He could develop into a starter or might prove to be an effective backup and STer. He is a gifted athlete.

Jimmy has some videos over at the link. Go check ’em out.

* * * * *

Why don’t we stick with the OLB topic?

Chip Kelly was at Smith’s Pro Day. The Eagles also saw him up close at the Senior Bowl. Either they have serious interest or they are putting on a heck of a smokescreen. My guess is that Smith could go in the late 2nd round.

* * * * *

UConn DE/LB Jesse Joseph worked out with the Eagles a few days ago.

None of the other Connecticut participants outside of Smallwood and Stephen are likely to be drafted, but the best prospect among the rest is defensive end Jesse Joseph, who had a fairly strong showing in his pro day workout.

Joseph put his versatility as an edge defender on display by participating in both defensive end and linebacker drills. He showed explosion going through the defensive line drills. Though he looked somewhat unnatural backpedaling and flipping his hips as you would expect for a defensive end, he looked relatively fluid for a player who typically has his hand in the dirt, while he did a good job catching the football in drills.

His numbers in the measurable drills weren’t good enough to bolster his draft stock, but they were adequate. He was hand timed at 4.83 seconds on both of his 40-yard dash attempts, while he recorded a 29 1/2” vertical, 8’6” broad jump and 19 repetitions in the bench press. He recorded impressive hand times of 4.19 seconds in the short shuttle and 7.26 seconds in the 3-cone drill.

“I think I did good,” Joseph said in an interview following his workout. “I did everything I could to leave everything on the field.”

Joseph said he could see himself playing either defensive end or linebacker at the next level. His sales pitch to an NFL team, he said, starts with being a hard worker.

“I’m a hard worker. I’m a competitor. I don’t let fatigue get to me when it’s that time for me to step on the field, and I can do more than one thing.”

Joseph said he has an individual workout scheduled with the Philadelphia Eagles for April 10, and added that he was “waiting on a couple more calls” from NFL teams.

Another LB to consider in the late rounds.

Here’s an interesting question. Does anyone else think the guy in this pic looks like Jerry Azzinaro?

He would have been at UConn to work out DL Shamar Stephen, who could be a DE target of the Eagles. In that pic, the coach/scout is working with Joseph.

Another great breakdown Mr. Lawlor. First off on the spiller news.. That would be an ideal fit for the eagles even more so than sproles in the fact that spiller not only has the receiving ability and added return ability he also would have added more speed (although sproles has more short area quickness), plus he is younger and probably would have costed about the same to sign to a new deal. I would have been very much on board with that move depending on the cost. As far as Barr goes I personally think he would be a great addition. He is very similar to Dion Jordan. He has outstanding movement skills and will grow as a pass rusher since he has only spent 2 full years at the position. If he fell pass the 13-18 range I wouldn’t hesitate to move up to get him as I believe he is the only other elite pass rusher in the draft after clowney and Mack (who i still like the most). The question I have for you Tommy is would you rather trade up for Barr or trade for Jordan. I was very much on the jordan train last year because I believed he had sooo much upside but if you think about it Barr may have just as much if not more upside. Personally if we could move a couple of non 1st round picks plus graham for jordan and still get a good player in the 1st I would rather do that since kelly knows him well and I think he has better coverage ability. Marcus smith is okay but I don’t really want to spend a 2nd round pick on him. There is some other players I’d rather have more.

  5. 5 Jerry Pomroy said at 12:13 AM on April 15th, 2014:

I think Barr is a better pass rusher than Jordan. But Jordan is better in coverage. Barr has a “killer” instinct which I don’t quite see in Jordan. I honestly think that your scenario for Tommy will be in play for as long as Barr is on the board. Once he’s taken I’m sure the Eagles brass will make a call to MIA to see what it’ll take for Jordan. If it includes our 22nd (which it most likely will), they’ll weigh whether Jordan is the BPA for them as soon as they know who that 21st selection will be and whose available then at 22.

  6. 6 Taylor Bolton said at 1:26 AM on April 15th, 2014:

Well said. I agree that barr might have a better killer instinct. the only thing I worry with barr is that he is more of a blitzer than a pure pass rusher. This criticism can also extend to jordan and its that reason that the coverage ability is my defining factor that makes me prefer Jordan however I would love either player as they would fit well in what the eagles need

  7. 7 Jerry Pomroy said at 10:13 AM on April 15th, 2014:

Ehh, I think he handles himself (Barr) in actual “pass rushing”. He’s not a big bull rusher, more an outside/inside guy, but he can get off blocks & from there has uncanny closing speed in getting to the QB. He does need to get stronger for the NFL. But he is the only guy that according to this study (http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/46337/349/peshek-sack-study-10) did not go unblocked in his pursuit of the QB and was still able to get the sack. The fact that he didn’t get any freebies, tells you that he’s able to get around a willing pass protector. Where I think Barr needs the most work is in his run anticipation, as he’ll often bite on a fake inside handoff.

DJ’s two biggest weaknesses were his strength and his lack of aggressiveness. He’s physically stronger now after a year bulking up for DE. So now it’s just a matter of working that strength into leverage. You can’t really teach aggressiveness, but you can push a guy to be more aggressive. He may still lack that “killer” instinct, but with being pushed to be more aggressive, could boost his confidence and turn him into a better finisher.

A question to ask is whether these two need to come off the field in sub packages where we’ve got 4 down linemen. I’d have to say no for DJ, because he’s now got experience as a DE plus he can drop as a DB over the TE. I’d have to say that Barr comes off at this point. He’s not strong enough yet to be a down lineman and he’s not great in coverage just yet.

Barr is the only guy that i’d consider making a big leap up the board for. I’d maybe move up 1-2 spots for Evans. But I’d need to be more convinced that he’s head and shoulders above the rest of the pack and I’m not so sure that he is.

  18. 18 Taylor Bolton said at 1:19 AM on April 15th, 2014:

I don’t think he is necessarily “head and shoulder” (although he is literally) better than the other wrs in this draft. I think he is with out a doubt the best “big” WR in the draft however. He isn’t gonna burn you like desean used to or brandon cooks/watkins/ODB can but he will be an outstanding chain mover as well as a redone threat that we haven’t had since TO. I wasn’t a huge fan of evans but i can see why the eagles would want him badly. Foles has done exceptionally well with cooper who isn’t a burner but is a big body and the one weakness we have is in the redzone. We move the ball up and down the field with no problem but the when we can continue to punch it in when we get close and score more points

  19. 19 Jerry Pomroy said at 10:23 AM on April 15th, 2014:

I can see why they’d want Evans. I’m just not so sure he’s worth the price it might take to move up to get him. He’s not so unique skill-wise that you couldn’t find another big WR in this draft that could give you much of the same skills. Especially in this draft. Barr however, his skills and athleticism are much more unique. Not just in this draft either. That’s why he’s the only guy if seriously consider making a big leap up for.

  20. 20 Cafone said at 2:04 AM on April 15th, 2014:

I’d love to get Barr but I’ve been hoping he falls to us. If he does not, I’d rather they didn’t trade up for him. It’s a deep draft and there will be a good player at 22. Yeah, I’d love to get the OLB of the future, but I think the Eagles have too many holes to focus on one position. If Barr isn’t there, a WR or safety or CB probably will be.

And though, as I said, OLB is very important for the future, Trent Cole isn’t a sack of potatoes. Hell, if he continues his pace from the second half of last season he will have 16 sacks next year.

  21. 21 ICDogg said at 5:19 AM on April 15th, 2014:

A Barr walks into the Eagles. ..Eagletender says, “Say,
we don’t get too many Barrs in here.” Barr says, “And at these prices, you won’t get too many more either!”

  22. 22 Scott J said at 7:29 AM on April 15th, 2014:

Is anyone keeping a running total on these private workouts and visits? Seems like the majority have been receivers and linebackers. I haven’t heard about any Safeties. They’ve shown a lot of interest in Barr and Evans, who have a slim-to-none chance of falling in the draft, but not Clinton-Dix or Pryor?

  23. 23 D3Center said at 9:33 AM on April 15th, 2014:

Deone Buchannon from Washington St had a visit to Philly I believe. And I would much rather have Deone than Pryor.

  24. 24 planetx1971 said at 6:45 PM on April 15th, 2014:

I’ve been told i’m off my rocker & worse for saying the same thing for some time now. I think Buchannon has the potential to be an absolute BEAST.

  25. 25 D3Center said at 7:27 PM on April 15th, 2014:

I’ve really like Buchannon for a while now the guy is extremely physical, decent in coverage and could be come better if he loosens up his hips and shows very good instincts. One play shown by D3FB against USC stands out to me in particular. It occurs at the 2:30 mark of this video.
    http://draftbreakdown.com/video/deone-bucannon-vs-usc-2013/

I also think Deone just has a much higher floor than Pryor which is why I’d prefer him.

  26. 26 planetx1971 said at 7:46 PM on April 15th, 2014:

Thanks for the link! I do believe he just needs more work in coverage. He has excellent spee & the bottom line for me is, it’s been ages since our safeties have punished anything outside of their own fan base. I think this guy absolutely could change that. Also I believe he could end up being a significantly better value than Pryor or Fix based on where they’re projected to be picked anyway.

Barr will be a bust. Gets pushed around by tight ends in college.

  34. 34 Mitchell said at 9:55 AM on April 15th, 2014:

Have to disagree here. Which tape did you watch that he was consistently getting pushed around by TE’s? The Stanford tape shows a bit but some of those were 2nd and long, so he was probably playing the run. I watched Stanford and Oregon tape and saw him being almost constantly double teamed, more so in the Oregon film (at the time they were ranked #3). He was STILL able to generate pressure. He has good awareness and I saw him use a speed and bull rush, and he also tried to incorporate a spin move (needs to get better there).

Barr put together two good years in a row while facing some good talent. He does need to add strength and it looks like his frame could hold it easily.

  35. 35 Jerry Pomroy said at 11:05 AM on April 15th, 2014:

To add, Barr is a worker. He’s not a guy that benefited from being left unblocked or can’t produce when blocked. On his sacks this past year, according to this study, he was blocked 100% of the time, yet still got home. This also shows how he rushes, how fast he gets to the QB, etc.

Anyway, the fact that Kelly went after Spiller means he wants a versatile pass catcher out of the backfield. Maybe DeAnthony Thomas is on his shopping list as the eventual replacement for Sproles.

  39. 39 bill said at 8:57 AM on April 15th, 2014:

The big thought (at least for my small brain) that keeps hitting me with everything we’ve seen and heard about Chip Kelly’s Eagles: Perhaps, on offense, Chip’s going to spend money on RB & TE, be around average $$ on OL and perhaps QB, and be cheap with WR. That’s the overarching theory that seems to make the most sense out of all the moves/rumors.
If they draft a WR high, then we know this is wrong. But we won’t know if it’s right for another couple of seasons otherwise, since waiting for a WR in this draft may just be about value.
Either way, it’ll be interesting to learn more about what the vision for the team is.

  40. 40 Mitchell said at 10:00 AM on April 15th, 2014:

Watching Barr film and Zumwalt jumped out at me. He was literally everywhere, at least against Oregon. He isn’t the most athletic guy but would he fit in our 3-4 as a later round prospect? If so, how low would he have to drop for us to select him? He is a fiery competitor and I feel like we need a bit more nasty on this defense. He is 6’4″ 235 but you can tell he still has more room to develop. Thoughts/

  41. 41 Neil said at 10:32 AM on April 15th, 2014:

I’m not an expert, but I’ve heard good things about Zumwalt. And I think eagles writers have been mocking/discussing him as a pick for a while.

  42. 42 Jerry Pomroy said at 11:13 AM on April 15th, 2014:

Zumwalt’s a good developmental prospect. Like many college LBs, he’ll need to add about 15-25lbs in order to match up to the NFL. But he’s a guy whose name has been thrown around here and there. He obviously gets 2nd fiddle to Barr, but is a good player in his own right.

  43. 43 Mitchell said at 11:45 AM on April 15th, 2014:

I love the nastiness and he can definitely add more weight to be an enforcer so no one wants to run across the middle. I’ll take a personal foul here or there for that kind of intimidation.

  44. 44 D3FB said at 3:13 PM on April 15th, 2014:

I have a fifth round grade on him. He has pretty average instincts. His ability in coverage isn’t as good as it should be considering how often he drops. He gets stuck on blocks, and doesn’t really show much knack for fighting through them. That’s probably becuase he has a freakishly odd build. He’s 6’4 but has 31″ arms, and his hands? I’m pretty sure he’s going to star in a Burger King commercial because they are a very tiny 8 3/4″.

Spiller would have given this team an interesting twist and I would certainly be more excited about the offense sans Jackson. If Sproles isn’t going to be a contributor as an above-average KR/PR next year, I am not really excited about what he brings to the table at this point.

Curious that the past week a couple of stories have leaked about the ‘Eagles tried to do X (trade for Jordan) or Y (trade for Spiller)’ but didn’t have any success. Wonder if this has anything to do with what was perceived as a very ho-hum offseason.

  52. 52 laeagle said at 2:58 PM on April 15th, 2014:

I’d be curious to know whether this is the result of a new regime not being as secretive (which I doubt given that Howie’s still involved), or simply a fact of life in the new era of sports reporting. Thanks to Twitter and the explosion of alternative news sites, maybe it’s just more likely that ANYTHING can (and will) leak these days. If you compare the situation a few years back, you had philly.com and that was about it, outside of message boards. Now you have Sheil and Tim, Tommy, the guys at BGN, a LOT more output from guys like Mosher and Reuben, etc. There’s simply an explosion of outlets now for Eagles news alone, and maybe that’s why we have so many of these leaks coming out.

Sounds to me like Howie’s got to get all Tyrion Lannister on that office of his, and feed the wrong leaks to people so he can see who’s compromising the fort.

Not sure which draft day routine is rougher your stomach. Guess it depends upon the type of Papa John’s pizza.

I usually hang out at Aroogas in Lemoyne with beer and wings on Day 1.

Technically, I believe that side of the street is East Pennsboro…with a Camp Hill mailing address.

Yeah I guess you’re right, same basic area.

Its all good. Aroogas was better when they were Kokomo’s

Usually pepperoni with bacon and a buffalo chicken.

At least Debbie and Dew list their ingredients. Papa John’s refuses to share the ingredients in its food. No thanks.

  72. 72 Mitchell said at 7:47 PM on April 15th, 2014:

Well, it is his secret recipe, why would he want to share it with anyone?

  73. 73 theycallmerob said at 6:46 PM on April 16th, 2014:

2 PJ pizzas? hell, at least you won’t need a bathroom break, probably for all 3 days of the draft

  74. 74 Mitchell said at 2:54 PM on April 15th, 2014:

Not a big fan of Moncrief, he is an excellent blocker but he just doesn’t have the hands. They are either body catches or lack of concentration drops. He is very fast and I don’t know why anyone would have had concerns about his speed coming into the draft. However it seems that a lot of his catches are made off of speed alone and with better db’s in the NFL, I don’t know if some of that will be taken away. I don’t think I saw him once make a contested grab even though he has the body for it.

He seems to have pretty good RAC potential but Ole Miss, didn’t allow him to get a ton of screens although the GA Tech game he was able to catch some.
Overall impression is that he is a good receiver but I don’t think he is worth a second round pick.

If Barr falls to 19, I want to move up and trade w dolphins and get him but its gonna cost our third round pick this year or two fourths …. thats too much. That third round pick could be a good future starter like Christian Jones or Donte Moncrief or Martavius Bryant or Trent Murphy or Dakota Dozier or Tre Mason or Kirksey or Jaylen Watkins or Dion Bailey or Kelce Quarles

If we trade down from 22 w the jaguars at 39 so they can move up and grab Teddy Bridge or Derek Carr we get 2 (39), 3 (70) and 5th (144). At 39, I think eagles will strongly consider Kyle Van Noy … and play him at times his first year in subpackages w Kendricks AND backup
Cole and come in on third down at times. Move him over to ILB the
following year to replace DeMeco unless he shows outstanding pass rush
ability. At 39, ARob and Latimer and Benjamin (ugh) are options as bpa at wr. If Fuller or Dennard or Tuitt fell that far they would also be high on our board I suspect

Otherwise, wait till 54 and take atta-boy or marcus smith.

Love them both. Latimer and ARob or Adams might make it to 54. Buchanon and ward doubtful. I like Pierre Desir there but haven’t heard any interest from Birds just yet. Juwuan James would definitely interest me there too.

If we wait till round 3, consider Trent Murphy. He has farm strength and
impressed at combine w a great three cone and good 40 that his
athleticism isn’t deficient. Reminds of Patrick kearney … Mean basturd. If we haven’t gone wr yet or want another one … Moncrief and Bryant should interest the coach. Christian Jones if we didn’t nab KVN. Watkins from Florida.

Round 4, if we haven’t addressed olb yet take Clark from West Virginia all day. Looked really athletic at his combine and proday. Long and powerful. I dont think the transition to olb will be that tough for him. Ate Zach Martin’s lunch. Like secondary here w Colvin, Exum, or Dontae Johnson .. or draft Celek’s replacement from Iowa or Herramins w Brandon Thomas and sit him for a year.

Rather take Marcus smith at 54 then to trade anything moving up for anyone not named Clowney…trying to get out of round 1, not chase anyone, even Barr who I adore, but Barr Falling to 22 would make me consider not accepting a trade back offer…

  77. 77 Mitchell said at 7:46 PM on April 15th, 2014:

What makes you want Smith or The Nigerian? Just curious because I can see more explosion and upside to the latter.

Posted this in another forum but, would you rather have:

    1. Trade up for Barr with your 1st and either (2nd or 3rd) round pick to get to mid teens.
    2. Trade for Jordan with your 1st and Brandon Graham

  81. 81 Sean Stott said at 10:51 PM on April 15th, 2014:

lol 1st + BG for DJ?

Why? BG > DJ. DJ was terrible last year. Pick #22 will get us someone better than DJ, which is easy because DJ is terrible.

That’s 2 players each better than DJ.

Whats interesting about the Spiller rumor is, if it’s true, then Kelly may not be thrilled with the RB’s currently on the roster. He must see Brown and Polk as being limited in the pass game.

I mentioned this a month ago when they were preparing to dump MeSean.
Chip did not have speedy WRs in Oregon, his “big play” guys were scatbacks, Barner, James, Thomas – because these guys set up mismatches with LBs and SSs in space – and you can’t jam them.

McKinnon will be a player on the Eagle BPA list, he’s a perfect fit for Chip. However, I don’t think Chip wants James or Thomas or Archer, defenders are bigger and faster in the NFL, so those 175 lb college backs don’t work – you want the compact quick guys like Sproles or Spiller, 5’8 190-200 lbs or so is close to ideal, small enough to hide, strong enough to break arm tackles.
