Appreciating Nick
Posted: April 17th, 2014 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 118 Comments »I was over looking around PE.com and saw they had a Player Profile up on Nick Foles. I almost didn’t watch it, but decided to go ahead and click it. Glad I did.
There’s nothing special or groundbreaking in this video. It just occurred to me while watching it that we’ve spent the last few months looking pass rushers, DBs, WRs and various other positions, but the Eagles are basically set at QB. They can take one if they want, but only if it is a player they love.
There is no need for a QB.
It felt good to watch Foles in action and know that the Eagles have a good young QB already in place. Sometimes we spend so much time and energy focused on what we don’t have and all the players we want that we forget how lucky we are to have the key piece in place. You don’t win without the right QB running the show.
I can’t wait to see Nick in action this year. His numbers won’t be as good, but I bet he’ll have a terrific season.
_
Curious to see if Nick can repeat his INT’s to TD’s ratio…
It seems extremely unlikely. 13.5-1 is flukey good, the best quarterbacks of all time don’t have seasons like that, in their best seasons. Not that I’d mind if he did, but I’m thinking realistically if he does a good job taking care of the ball it will be more like 4-1 or 5-1. 40 TD’s and 8 Int’s is a great season at 5-1.
I dunno man…if our run game is even more potent than it was last year, which should be the case, then this offense becomes extremely player friendly as long as you make the right decisions (reading the keys) and taking the mismatch defined throws that chips genius provide him…smart kid, accurate kid..also love how this offense let’s QBs get into a Rythem with screens and swing pass options early in the game that are built Into so many of the packaged plays….
..
I’m also expecting a much higher percentage of 2 and 3 TE packages this year, as well as Sproles in the short passing game. More 2TE sets, more 2RB sets…shady was deadly on wheel routes, I don’t even know what a Defense will do when Sproles is running a wheel route on the opposite side shady is running one on…more short, intermediate passes counting on YAC should provide some high percentage throws for the kid…
..
Nice to know. That the success won’t go to his head, he won’t start getting lazy or start enjoying stardom..Kid is humble, grounded, and seems to have a passion for improving…already having a young franchise QB on the roster accelerates the team building process drastically…don’t even want to think how it would suck to be going Into this draft desperate for a QB…
Absolutely…I actually started re watching the games from this year a few weeks back, and what a treat he was. Andy did a lot for us, but it was him who pulled rank in the draft room and demand that Nick was the pick. Andy leaving us this gem of a QB on the way out, makes me forgive him from the senile jerry jones moves he was making like making OL coaches, defensive coordinator, and then forcing a Wide 9 scheme onto that inexperienced DC….always appreciate Andy for the Rainmaker
What site do you use to re-watch the eagles games
Download torrents and burn them onto DVDs
Thanks 🙂
I thought all the stories were that Nick was Marty’s guy. Andy liked Russell Wilson. Don’t give Andy fake credit for things.
Well, if Andy liked Wilson, he couldn’t be all bad.
yes but seattle drafting a guy andy liked leaves little in terms of legacy.
True, although possibly an asterisk*?
No…he was Andy’s pick
I swear John, you do nothing but talk out of your butt. Reid lost his control to Howie after the 2011 season. Reid didn’t have any rank to pull. It was Howie who had the final say and it was Howie who made the decision to draft Foles.
Look it up idiot…Didinger was telling the story the other day as if he was in the war room..doubt hall of fame historian was talking out his ass….but your welcome, you learned something knew today…how the hell does it serve me to make up a story, you tool?
Re-read what I said. There’s a difference between Reid being the influence behind the pick and Reid pulling a rank that he no longer had. Lurie even said that Howie had the final say in the 2012 draft.
Its also funny how you are allowed to call someone an idiot and a tool (something that I’ve seen you do frequently) but my comment gets deleted when I reply in a similar manner.
They were both high on both QBs I’m sure.
Marty doesn’t get to pick who we draft…Andy pulled rank and decided we would draft FOles in the war room
You’re welcome.
x2, Tommy…
Jeremiah says: “eagles focus on certain profile of a player under Chip more than they did under Andy. Compared the approach to the Patriots” advantage is that it narrows and focuses on what they look for but that you can eliminate a potentially productive player because of it…
….
Expect this draft to be used to help us get bigger across the board. Players will have above average height and length for the position, and it they happen to lack some ideal height. Our draft picks most likely will have long arms to compensate for lack of height..
Yes. I think the strategy is to minimize the risk of a clunker.
The emphasis we put on character and the interview process is what protects us from clunkers…if you have an athlete who you know has that insane drive and work ethic to be great, if proper coaching you will have a good player on your hands sooner or later…all about intelligence and commitment/work ethic
Foles IS the most exciting thing about the new season. His hype will reach a crocendo in TC and then it will be deafening in preseason.
He probably had THE best sophomore QB season statwize EVER.
Only based on his QB rating.
Otherwise, Dan Marino’s 2nd season puts him on top — when he set the record for TDs and yards.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MariDa00.htm
How many games that year, AC? Would extrapolating make any difference to comparison?
16 games.
The NFL went to the current 16-game schedule starting with the ’78 season (the Eagles’ first playoff year since 1960, thanks to the first MM.)
Thanks. Couldn’t remember exactly when 16-game schedule started. Also probably too distracted to look it up! Distracted sound much better than lazy, don’t you think? ;~)
Game was different back then, makes his season even more impressive. God I hated that guy.
Keep in mind he had the benefit of outfitting his receivers with these…
Agreed. I say we * all of his stats, disqualify him and forget about his existence. So now can we say Foles had the best statistical sophmore season ever?
with the very attractive stretch wrist band!
picture taken right before he was kidnapped by two guys in football uniforms. so sad.
Laces out, Dan.
Excellent gloves, HOF gloves, but not greatest of all time conversation gloves because the Elway gloves are much better.
Just recently, the gloves may be good for groping.
But rating is a compilation of all stats, so I like the higher rating.

Foles did have the best season for a 24 year old QB ever
Probably had the best season ever out of everyone who had so little experice year one as a rookie
Even better than Bubby Brister?
oh – I remember all the arguments, I mean, conversations last pre-season on who should start. I remember it well. My memory has about a 12 month span though so I’ll forget soon.
I expect Foles to be highly proficient. I couldn’t guess on stats but I expect Foles NOT to lose us game.
Assuming he has another big year, I’m curious with how the Eagles compensate Nick next year. If Kelly believes so much in his offensive system, how much of Nick’s success is system-driven or purely talent/hard work-driven? Vick actually beat out Nick last year, which may suggest a lot of Nick’s success is system-driven. Will they try to low-ball him or pay him mega-bucks?
They better pay him BEFORE Luck and Wilson get paid. It will be much better for the Eagles if they pay Foles based off of the current set of big money QB deals as opposed to the next set of them. The Luck and Wilson deals will take longer to do than Foles, so let’s get Foles done before the market is reset at a higher level.
I’d like to see them try to get Foles in at around 6 years / $96 million ($16 per) if possible.
I think that sounds reasonable given the plethora of $20 million per year contracts. In this day and age, as a “franchise” QB, you seem to get $20 million a year whether or not you win a Superbowl (or a playoff game, for that matter). Just because Chip is new to the NFL, you wonder if he’ll bow to the current thinking of “if he looks the part, pay him!” or he’ll think, I want to see him win some playoff games first or I can make Matt Barkley just as good. Guessing he’ll pay Nick “market value”, but wonder if Chip thinks of things differently.
Vick probably beat him out at first based on his years of experience. And possibly Kelly thought it was better to move from Vick to Foles rather than the reverse.
note to self:need to read all the comments before I respond.
Kelly has also been on record stating (in so many words) that the starting QB is the only position that could be considered even close to irreplaceable.
Interesting, don’t remember reading that, but that would hint at the answer.
Of course Vick beat out Foles in TC last year, w/so many years of expeience vs 0 for rookie Foles…Vick also played in Kelly`s system.
It was the QB that made the difference.
Clearly Foles’ play helped turn the team around, but I’d argue Vick played well in Kelly’s system, which surprised a lot of people given his struggles in the last couple years. Vick played early in the season when it was still new for the team and before the defense jelled. It was the injuries that were super frustrating. You could argue it was Kelly’s system that helped turn around Vick’s play from previous years and helped Foles play lights out.
On a side note, anyone got a spider graph for this guy? I’m seeing him everywhere.
I always assumed that was photoshopped. If his traps were a little smaller, wouldn’t his neck be about a foot long?
I think the joke in this is the numbnuts advertisers who thought people wouldn’t notice that it was photoshopped, and that this image would somehow spur a consumer to action. I don’t think a human can live if his deltoids are bigger than his head.
And consider this me downvoting myself for explaining my own joke.
To me, there’s nothing better than joke explaining.
Wait, are you saying you are the advertiser responsible for me having to see that picture on seemingly every website I visit!?
What?! Photoshopped!??? But I already threw away my receipt!
I think the steroids shrunk the guy’s head.
photoshopped!
Lol, this guy is all over on facebook. Don’t you guys think that he was the result of Juxtaposer though?!
There’s an even worse “example” on one game site I use sometimes.
Is that Guile?
I think it’s Blanka, pre-“accident”.
Not only is it nice not having to worry about the QB position, it’s nice not talking about Vick. It was tiring with the back and forth banter with his haters and supporters.
yea, i was usually in the middle of most of those arguments. i could appreciate his talents, hated his background, and so on.
i don’t *hate* the guy now, i wish him the best, but i’m glad its not here. lol
Or any other dead-end scramble bum.
My only worry about Nick is, since this is a contract year for him, will he let that get in his head and affect his play. I don’t think so, but you never know.
Dude…he bounced back from Dallas and a concussion traveling Westcoast to drop 7 dimes and bring down the rain…
…
Overcome a tough first half to leave the field with a come from behind lead against Brees I. The playoffs,,,
…
Wouldn’t worry too much about his head, it’s his strength!
It’s not really a true contract year though.
Yes it is. The Eagles can negotiate a new deal after the third year of a rookie contract. He’ll get a BIG pay raise at the end of this season.
If he plays his cards right he might even get a reserved parking spot…
If he plays like he did last year, he’ll get anything he wants.
I don’t know… parking spots are pretty serious business…
Doesn’t mean you have to negotiate. They can wait until 2016 if they feel like it.
No way! There is no way they don’t renegotiate his contract. That’s the way it works in the NFL. You don’t screw over your starting QB.
That doesn’t make it a contract year. All players past their 3rd year are eligible to have their contracts redone, at virtually any time. That doesn’t mean people are always playing in contract years.
I’m only talking about rookie contracts. Teams can’t renegotiate rookie contracts until after 3 years. Kaepernick is renegotiating his contract this year. Foles and Wilson will have their contracts renegotiated next year. The reason they are all having their rookie contracts renegotiated is because they won the starting QUARTERBACK jobs on their respective teams. All 3 players deserve to be paid starting money and that’s why their teams will renegotiate with them. Do you really think it’s fair that these guys who lead their teams to the playoffs should get paid rookie salaries while other starting QB’s get paid millions of dollars? If the 3 year rule didn’t exist, the Eagles would be negotiating with Foles right now.
Read this:

Nicks family is already worth some absurd amount of money like $30million. I think money issues will weigh on him a lot less than other players since he’s financially set for the rest of his life regardless.
People from financially well off families don’t tend to leave money on the table either, though. You don’t stay rich for long being stupid about money.
Did anyone else see this?
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/17/arizona-sheriff-releases-mugshot-of-donovan-mcnabb/
I’m assuming you are talking about Mcnabbs mugshot pic?
Yeah I should have also added or have anymore info than the report gives.
He served a day for a DUI plea deal
They say of you don’t have a huge arm, you had better do everything else well. With Foles I’d say he does pretty much everything else well, and given his age his arm might still evolve to above average.
Whoever said Nick Foles doesn’t have a big arm?
It’s not a howlitzer, but it is certainly above average.
I think Nick’s got an average arm for an NFL QB. He can get some zip on passes sometimes but not consistently, and he can throw the deep ball far enough for it to work.
http://birdbreakdown.com/2014/03/03/qb-velocity-rankings-nick-foles-has-an-objectively-strong-arm/
His ball velocity is almost at the same level as strong armed QBs like Kaepernick.
Peoples problem is they have been used to 14 years of McNabb and Vick who both had great arm strength with Vick maybe having the greatest arm strength of all time (I have seen Vick flick a ball 60 yards while scrambling)
IDK man, from an eyeball perspective I don’t see him having am arm like Kaps.
Shah8 did.
Repeatedly.
Wow. You spelled his name right!
Montana never had an arm. Did pretty well with it, though.
We better pray that Foles plays all season. What we have behind Foles is way less than ideal.
Why do Eagles fans place absolute trust in Chip Kelly when he drops our best wide receiver, but apparently no faith at all in Chip Kelly when it comes to revitalizing Mark Sanchez’s career?
Because Mark Sanchez is a complete bum.
Because we trust that Chip didn’t just drop DJ – as you say. He got rid of, what Chip believes is a cancer. We have no way to know exactly why. But we do know, Chip didn’t wake up one day say — WTF is that in my cereal?? That’s it DJ is OFF the team!!!. Chip had his reasons.
I for one don’t agree with cutting Desean and am sort of excited about Sanchize.
One of the things I like about Eagles fans is that there is less group-think among our ranks than I notice from other NFL fans.
I assume that can be posted on most teams blogs.
I can’t see that TD/INT ratio coming in at the same level, so I could see a drop in rating taking place.
We really don’t know:
– This year’s run/pass ratio
– The impact of Jackson’s loss on the productivity of the pass game
– Any improvements in the D that might lessen the need for the O to do as much
Even if the numbers aren’t as gaudy, I still expect another pro bowl season from Foles.
It feels good to have a great QB in place already. As long as he doesn’t play on All Pro level again so we won’t be afraid that the Eagles put him on the trading block…
You’re still not over it eh?
We’re probably going to see stuff about Desean for years, similar to the people who say EARL THOMAS every time he makes a tackle.
Lol. You’re right though.
No. You?
Would you give up the rainmaker to the texans for RG3 type compensation including the top pick in the draft?
Yes every day
Unless I am certain that next year will be a Super Bowl year, I would always trade for that compensation. Any player.
Low blow, Tommy!

All this love for FOles needs a rebuttal. Is shah8 hibernating or on vacation?
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1059
He’s busy because it is growing season.
Also, it appears he is an active poster on the Falcons boards, where he constantly bashes Matt Ryan for having a weak arm. My guess is that he is a Vick fan, not necessarily a specific team fan, and is most likely over on the Jets MB spewing his garbage.
doesn’t he also like Joe Webb? I feel like Joe Webb and Mike Vick have something in common I can’t think of what it could be though.
Neither one plays for the Eagles.
Interesting. Atlanta. Wonder who I’ll have available to poke into a nonsensical argument now. Probably GEAGLE. He tends to beat up on Maggie a lot.
I think I’ve made my position clear. Why spoil a celebration with my comments?
Also, this is the doldrums. Nothing is happening, really, so I just mostly skim stuff on my way to reading about something else, like figs.
I don’t comment on Falcons boards. I do not think that Matt Ryan has an arm too weak to play, but he’s right at the border, so I do tend to think anyone who has a weaker arm is an unviable QB.
It’s hard being a lonely voice…crying in the wilderness.
My opinion isn’t all that uncommon. On philly boards, yes. However, there are a number of others who would know, who largely have the same concerns.

First of all, Joe Flacco isn’t that good as a QB. What Joe Flacco demonstrates is that good arm talent really gives your offense a chance to win tough games. So if the strong-armed QB has a hot post-season (with good targets), the team can win despite many of the issues of the strong-armed QB.
Matt Ryan has to be about the weakest high draft pick QB since Joey Harrington (Mark Sanchez, based on what he did in college, looked better) in terms of tools and what he brought to the college game. Of course the later copycat picks of high floor types have not done as well, notably in the 2011 draft. It is to his credit that Ryan panned out as well as he did. It is also to management’s credit that they never thought Ryan could truly carry an offense, and kept it utterly stacked with talent. I don’t really think he proved himself with 2 good quarters in the post-season, and the man tends to throw up big interception games when the pass rush consistently gets to him. I think that Matt Ryan without talent all around him is probably a liability.
This quote came directly from a Falcon message board.
This will make you appreciate Nick Foles…

hey tommy what do you think of the idea of subbing out demeco for vinny curry in passing situations, and using barwin as a coverage linebacker with kendricks. Then your 4 down lineman would be cole cox thorton and curry. curry is a better pash rusher than barwin, and barwin would be a better coverage linebacker than meco
