Azz Men

DL coach Jerry Azzinaro has been at several Pro Days this spring. Let’s take a look at who he has been looking at.

Jay Bromley from Syracuse. DT who would be DE/NT for the Eagles.

Kareem Martin from UNC. DE who would need to bulk up 10 pounds to play DE for the Eagles. Could also possibly switch to LB, but the fact the Eagles sent Azz to work him out shows more interest as a DE.

Shamar Stephen from UConn. DT who would be DE/NT for the Eagles. Caught my eye at the Senior Bowl.

We don’t know for a fact that Azz was the guy who worked out Kyrhi Thornton, but he probably was. He is a good DE candidate so that’s a guy you send the DL coach to check out, not just an area scout.

Coach Azz might have been at more spots. We’re learning more every day. You can see the Eagles are not focusing on big NT types, but rather tweeners that could play DE or NT. Martin is the one exception. He is a DE/OLB player. No NT in his future.

The Eagles did bring DE Taylor Hart to Philly. He had a foot issue so I’m sure that visit was more medical than anything else. Here is Hart vs Tennessee. And remember that Jeff Stoutland went to the UT Pro Day to work out their 4 OL prospects.

Here is the full list of workouts and visits info.

No Beau Allen? Azz saw him work out… What I don’t know is if we were at Cal’s workout for Coleman. Can anyone speak on it?

Think the Eagles NT will be someone who a lot of teams project as a DE like Logan was,,.a Deandre Coleman type, rather than a pure NT type like Allen

Yes I know our TE coach was at Cal’s pro day….

Shamar Stephen is a similar player to Coleman, however he is the better fit for the defense. Both provide similar ability to clog up traffic and take on double teams, however Stephen has much better lateral agility, chases better than Coleman, has a better feel for getting his hands up, and has a better feel for sensing where a play is going.

As far as rotational interior rushers, Kruger has that ability and could be very valuable in that regard. We can also look at UDFA types like Kerry Wynn or Ben Gardner. I doubt we will spend a draft pick on a guy who will see 200 snaps a year.

  4. 4 GEAGLE said at 3:04 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Yeah I usually Include Shamar on my short list of late round NT…think if Justin Ellis had longer arms he would b a no BRAINER for us…
    ….
Kruger Says he expects to get up to 290lbs this summer…I’m high on the kid, best case scenario him and Curry to big leap, we would have:

    Thornton/Krugs….Logan/?……Cox/Curry

So we probably still need two DLs…a backup for Logan, and someone versatile who we don’t dress

Tommy, What do you make of the eagles showing little to no interest in safeties all offseason? I don’t really buy the chip was at so and so pro day things to look at safeties. Also all those teams had targets at other positions that make a lot of sense for the eagles.

Do you think the eagles like what they have with bringing Nate back, adding Malcom Jenkins and seeing what Wolff does year 2?

  6. 6 NinjaP said at 11:11 AM on April 23rd, 2014:

Well apparently a report came out this morning that Clinton-Dix visited philly. Maybe information is just lacking.

  7. 7 austinfan said at 11:52 AM on April 23rd, 2014:

They also have Keelan Johnson and Maragos, tells me either they take a safety high or wait to pick them up as UDFAs, because why waste a mid round pick on guys like the guys already on your roster.

  8. 8 eagleyankfan said at 1:33 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

I’d imagine, if they really liked Nate — he would have had a longer term signed instead of just 1 year.

athletic enough for 1 gap or 2 gap NT

Four guys who are similar to Thornton, good athletes, primarily run stuffers, good length.

DE Khyri Thornton – Southern Miss

look at the leg explosion, could add 20 lbs and still be explosive, compare to Kruger
    6’6 269 34 ¼ 10 [4.82 1.75 24 4.46 7.17 34 9’9]
I think they want their version of Calais Campbell

  10. 10 Baloophi said at 11:54 AM on April 23rd, 2014:

One thing jumped out at me while watching the Shamar Stephen tape: the Uconn field is inked up!

They’ve got an enormous Husky logo that goes from the 21 to the 29 yard line on both halves of the field, a giant “A” on the opposite side representing whatever non Big East conference they’re in right now, and then a “UCONN” mid-field logo that stretches from the 33 yard line to the opposite 33 yard line.

They must get a wheel of a deal on field paint.

  11. 11 Baloophi said at 12:12 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Taylor Hart really sits back in his three point stance. He looks like a catcher going through the signs, or my dog expecting a treat, or a guy trying to use an airport toilet without contacting the seat…

  12. 12 TommyLawlor said at 6:51 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

His stance is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Not good or bad, just unusual.

  13. 13 ACViking said at 12:33 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

    With respect, T-Law . . .

But I think the title should have been: “JAzz Men.”

Hopefully, they’ll take our blues away…

  15. 15 TommyLawlor said at 6:52 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

That certainly would have been classier.

Dee Ford Draft Rumor– being reported by Walterfootball.com that several teams they contacted recently universally have dee ford ranked as a second round prospect. I personally doubt he is even a consideration for the eagles at 22 and had him ranked behind attaboy and marcus smith myself in the second round, but its interesting to hear that from nfl teams as it was touted that we was a top 30 if not top 25 pick since the senior bowl.

  18. 18 oreofestar said at 1:54 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

good because he is a 2nd round pick ad not even for us

  19. 19 GEAGLE said at 2:00 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Man…Marcus,Barr!Attaucho and maybe even murph all have to be off the board for us to even think of him…wouldn’t be surprise if we put a 4th round grade on him

  20. 20 oreofestar said at 2:03 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

lol I can see Powell being higher on their board

  21. 21 GEAGLE said at 2:06 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Wouldn’t surprise me.. Ford is just not going to be an eagle…dude only played LDE…”the people at auburn don’t believe he can play OLB and they had him for years”-Cossell….

And he may not be ready to play the run by the beginning of year two…Really doubt we draft him

  22. 22 oreofestar said at 2:27 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

I would love to bring him in as an UDFA lol

  23. 23 Jerry Pomroy said at 11:34 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

That is just so odd to me that Auburn played him at LDE. He was clearly a better pass rusher than edge setter and backfield stuffing menace, which means he should’ve played on the right side. Playing that left side really padded his stats and made him look better to the naked eye as he blew past all those less athletic and fleet footed RTs. Heck even Tommy came around finally on Ford & actually shared my sentiments that he’ll be most successful in a wide-9 front, playing that front side rushing role a la Jason Babin.

  24. 24 Tom W said at 6:43 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Honestly I really went back and forth on taking Ford off our board just like I did w Jeffcoat.
Saw Walter’s draft … hated the draft obviously but liked where he mocked players in rds 2 and 3.
    1) Fuller whatever not what I want but leave it there for now.
    2) Attaboy, Marcus Smith, KVN, etc. Chip may love martavius though — justin hunter esque and we know chip loved justin hunter last year. just saying. I’d wait on martavius till the third round. Cosell said same thing. but me i’d take moncrief over bryant.
    3) D. Moncrief
    4) Lamin Barrow or Kirksey
    5) Colt, DeAndre, Huff, Dat, Brandon Coleman

  25. 25 GEAGLE said at 6:19 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Whoever drafts jake mathews or Greg Robinson in round 1, will draft Dee at the beginning of round 2…atlanta,minnesota, tampa,

  26. 26 GEAGLE said at 3:00 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Kruger said he expects to be up to 290 by Camp…6’6 290lbs. Our youngest player(won’t turn 22 til June)…I loved the kid at Utah, and he was one of those kids you draft cause you expect him to be a higher pick had he stayed in schooL…so we have Kruger with the inside track to replace Gaethers backing up Thornton…Curry backs up King Dingaling aka Fletcher “King” Cox…

Squrare simply can’t backup Logan…not to mention I think the second commandment in the Bible is: “Eagles NT SHALL NEVER get trucked by cowgirl RBs”…Multi front scheme requires smaller, more mobile NTs…think of it this way, you can’t ask a fat immobile blob to line up as a DT in a 4man line, and be twisting and stunting, looping around the end…Sure we can add a brick ish house like baeu Allen In the 7th, maybe even Undrafted…but if we are going to spend picks in a valuable draft I suspect it will be on the NT/DE tweeters, who we can grow to be credible at gobbling up blockers in the run game, but mobile enough to where if a team doesn’t allow us to substitute, we can switch to a 4man Nickle on the fly and stick Malcom Jenkins on the slot! while still being able to do some of the things we like to do like twist. Stunt and shoot the A gaps with our ILBs…

So the one DL I thnk we would add if we were to trade back into early round two and see him on the board is Tuitt…

Wish we could find out Logan’s target weight gain for this offseason. But he will get every opportunity to become our NT of the future

  27. 27 Tom W said at 6:44 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Krueger! we just need him or bamiro (or long or tobin to a less extent) to hit and that would be huge!

  28. 28 GEAGLE said at 7:36 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

Im interested in seeing travis long in the preseason,..dont rule him out yet…him and braman as the 3rd string olb will be preseason fun

  29. 29 Weapon Y said at 4:13 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

It’s still hard to say what exactly the Eagles are looking for in nose tackles. Isaac Sopoaga and Bennie Logan have drastically different physiques. The Eagles might have just figured they needed a placeholder at NT until a younger guy was ready, so they settled for Soap even though he wasn’t their ideal guy. On the other hand, Soap might have their ideal physique, but performed so poorly that they were willing to let Logan (who, under this theory, they originally envisioned as a rotational DE/NT) take his job. Draft day just might give us the answer.

  30. 30 GEAGLE said at 6:14 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

With as often as we used 4 man lines, and the fact that i cant really see chip spending a pick on a two down player, i suspect we want a guy with long arms, who can take on double teams as a traditional 3-4NT, while also be mobile enough to line up in a 4-3 if teams dont let us substitute on 3rd down, and be agile enough to do all the twisting and stunting we do…..which is why i think the NT/DE tweeners, with the frames to add more bulk will be the way we go, but we will have a better picture about everything once we see this draft unfold…

Hoping its one of those years we trade back like 6 times…even if we are just getting extra late round picks, it will add to the competition level at camp

  35. 35 Jerry Pomroy said at 11:18 PM on April 23rd, 2014:

I honestly haven’t even looked too much into DL as far as draft. I think we’re pretty good there as is, and I trust that if we do snatch someone up, they’ll end up being a good fit. Plus, LB is where it’s at when it comes to the 3-4. So my mind has ultimately been focused on LBs & WRs. I’ve checked out some DBs, but I get the feeling we won’t see a DB selected until day 3 at this point, unless something changes between now and then (Dion Jordan??). Speaking of Dion, I’ve been weighing in my head, would I rather trade up for Barr or trade for Dion? That’s a tough call. Barr looks like he has a higher ceiling than Dion, but will rightfully also require a bigger price tag. Dion could cost us #22 & Graham (maybe Curry instead of Graham). I’d honestly be happy with either, but would be lying if I said I wouldn’t prefer Barr over Dion. I’d just rather have the guy that has a killer instincts when it comes to making plays in the opposing offenses’ backfield.

why is taylor hart’s stance soo horrible is he new to football? that stance causes an extra tick which negates his explosiveness on the one play where he was in a regular stance he exploded off the ball and got the sack. needs to get stronger 4th or 5th round prospect
