Busy 3rd Round – Pick and a Trade

Posted: May 9th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 235 Comments »

The Eagles traded out of pick 83. They gave that to the Texans and got a 4th rounder and 5th rounder in return. Both picks are the first in those rounds. That’s important, but I’ll cover that later.

At pick 86 the Eagles added another WR, Josh Huff from Oregon.

I like Huff quite a bit. He is 5-11, 205. He can play in the slot. Huff is quick and fast. He will work the middle of the field. Huff has good RAC skills. He also adds value as a KOR. Huff exploded as a Senior, going 62-1140-12. He took the step from being a role player to being a star player. He projects to being a role player in the NFL.

Obviously Huff is a good fit for the offense since he played in the scheme at Oregon and thrived. He should be able to fit in quickly and immediately push for playing time.

I didn’t have Huff rated this early, but I do like him a lot as a player. I would have had him slotted more in the 4th round area. That’s not significantly different that pick 86, though, so this isn’t some crazy move. And I think the fact that Chip knows him so well had to help the Eagles grade on Huff. They know he’ll block. They know he’ll play STs. And so on. Not as much projection with a guy like him.

Hate to be on the hater site on this one, maybe I’m more ok with that move tomorrow, but that’s just a shitty pick at this position in the draft. That’s how Raiders or Cowboys fans have to feel all the time.

And the Colts snatch Moncrief. Thanks for that.

  14. 14 ztom6 said at 10:53 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Can’t say I like the value they’ve been getting. Huff could easily have been there at the top of the 4th with the pick from the Texans. Tons of value flying around in the 3rd and we get Josh Huff. Seems like a luxury pick to me.

  15. 15 GEAGLE said at 10:54 PM on May 9th, 2014:

No shot in hell that huff wouldnt have been on the board with the first pick in round 4,,.’we shit the bed

Yeah I don’t dislike any of the players they’ve been getting, I just don’t like the picks. This is a very talented draft, so other teams getting a lot better all around the NFL. Eagles not doing anything to separate themselves…. meanwhile Carolina just picked the guy I wanted (Trai Turner).

  17. 17 GEAGLE said at 10:53 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Colts got moncreif #1 upside…we got a #5 WR and ST player…i dont even mind huff, but round 3 is a joke.
    .,.
I get called a rosey optimist, but no one better try and sugar coat this bullshit…he is like fhe 25th ranked WR prospect….this is terrible…rather have taylor hart if we needed to draft a duck….the trade was good..

Someone please try and friggin tell me huff wouldnt have been on the board at the beginning of round 4? Fock outta here…

  18. 18 Ark87 said at 10:55 PM on May 9th, 2014:

  25. 25 Richard Colton said at 10:59 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I was pulling for Jones and Desir at 83 and 86. Huff is a head scratcher. If he’s our 4th WR out of the gate, plus our kick off returner AND the gunner on punts…ok…I can live with it.

  26. 26 GEAGLE said at 11:02 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Thats not acceptable for a top 100 pick in a deep draft..he would have been on the board with the first pick in round 4 we got from texans. And even that would be a reach…we played ourselves
..You better get a starting talent in round 3, we didnt. Period

  27. 27 tball_man said at 10:53 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I love how when there is a head scratching ‘reach’ pick, you can look at the trade back.. And see assurance through Howie acquiring an extra pick to accompany the ‘reach’

  28. 28 OregonDucker said at 10:54 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Thanks Tommy for your comments on Huff. Frankly, I am pissed about the pick but I trust your judgement and Chip’s. I still need some air though, this one got me hot under the collar.

  29. 29 Jernst said at 10:55 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I don’t know anything about Huff. Why do you dislike him so much?

  30. 30 OregonDucker said at 10:57 PM on May 9th, 2014:

He tends to lose focus in critical pass situations. Kind of like the Coop drop in the playoff game. He needs to learn to focus better in critical situations. He is a playmaker and Chip likes him in long bomb situations. He has delivered in the past. But some of his drops piss me off big time.

  31. 31 Baloophi said at 10:59 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Of course the one time he doesn’t drop is in the draft…

  32. 32 Jernst said at 10:59 PM on May 9th, 2014:

If he improved the focus part of his game, do you think he has the skill set of a starting NFL WR otherwise? Do you think he’s a third round talent if he improved on his dropped passes?

  33. 33 OregonDucker said at 11:01 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Yes, he has potential with the right coaching. I just don’t like him at #3 but Chip clearly does, so I defer to the genius.

  34. 34 Jernst said at 11:02 PM on May 9th, 2014:

  36. 36 GEAGLE said at 11:00 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Because there was no shot of him beinv drafted before we draft again in round 4. He has good role player potential..their were still raw WRs to develop with starting potential…not a bad player, no shot in hell anypne can justify taking him in the top 100

  37. 37 Jernst said at 11:03 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I get all that…the pick was clearly not a great value pick and a definite reach. I was just asking Ducker specifically because he is an Oregon fan, watches him a lot, and seems to really dislike him.

  38. 38 anon said at 11:05 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I guess who cares we have 4 picks in 4 and 5? Is there anyone that you would have taken that we’d miss between now and pick 101?

  39. 39 livingonapear said at 3:21 AM on May 10th, 2014:

I’ll admit, I don’t know why we took him over Moncrief. That’s really my main issue with the pick.

Having said that, I understand why we want him on the team. Hard to tackle, not afraid to block or hit on special teams. Works well in coverage and runs sneaky routes that suddenly get him open. I think a trips formation with him, Ertz and Matthews will do nicely. obviously there’s the versatility thing, lining him up for in the backfield, or using him as a pitch man. I’m not sure how I feel about that though.

Howie wants a team that’s not afraid to shove back when Richard Sherman and Barandon Browner come shoving, and that’s cool. Soft rub routes won’t do it, so you want guys who can make the catches with a hand on their jersey, or who can push through a tackle. Still…3rd round.

  68. 68 Baloophi said at 11:12 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I’m sure this is illegal in the U.S., but a cage-match between an eagle and a seahawk would be a pretty sweet pay-per-view event.

(Ornithology update: a seahawk (or “sea hawk”) is actually an osprey… which differs from an eagle because it has a reversible outer toe.. Learning – it’s fundamental))

Just look at it this way – Nate Ilaoa was once the consensus TATE Best Draft Selection, our most successful QB in team history was infamously booed on stage, and most fans thought DeSean Jackson (the same WR we all claim to miss so dearly) wouldn’t survive the physicality of training camp. In short, we’re all idiots.

Tommy, thanks for being the voice of reason and providing perspective on the selections and strategy. Of all the writers, you seem to have the best finger on the pulse of what the Eagles are doing (nice call on Marcus Smith, and on trading back with one of the 3rd round picks).

Holding the first selection in the 4th (and 5th) round is strong – teams will be resetting their boards tonight and jockeying for their guy – Eagles will either take someone they love at 101 or trade back and collect more picks – either way, they’ll have the night and next morning to make their decision(s).

Reminds me of the story TLaw posted a few days ago. Reid wanted to trade up for a player in the 1st round. They got him anyway. The replacement pick if their target wouldn’t have been there was their second round pick.

Chip is a great football mind, obviously, but he, Howie and Gamble seem to be unable to read the other teams. They have to get better in opposition research next year.

  154. 154 jackpotsdad said at 11:31 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I’m not a fan of the Huff pick but I’ll try to offer up a rationale for it.

    1. Huff is an ascending player – he’s improved every year he’s been at Oregon. I used to hate seeing him on the field but I have to grudgingly admit that he has gotten better.
    2. People seem to forget that the Eagles have Maclin on a 1 year contract. If he busts, then the Eagles are without options. If he has an incredible year, the Eagles may choose to let him go.
    3. Huff offers KOR capabilities and should be better than Brad Smith.
    4. Huff is willing to sacrifice his body – both in blocking, special teams and KORs
    5. He is sure handed. I hate Huff’s route running, and I hate his lack of situational awareness, but he doesn’t do body catches, and excels in catching those beautiful over the shoulder catches that NFL players need to be able to master.

I’m an Oregon fan, but honestly, I wish the Eagles would’ve gone defense or offensive line with this pick. *sigh*

IghWell so far I cannot help but feel this draft will end up as underwhelming, SADLY. We got a pass rusher that I feel may develop to be good. Nothing more. Down the line. A couple of receivers that may combine to be average. Hoping so much to be wrong. On another note, the NFC west D’s are just getting sicker across the board. Ariz. Took a Safety that can lay the WOOD to go with Honey Badger & co. And the Rams add Badger lite in LMJ. I’m sure I’m missing some I’m SURE. Not sure who Seattle took but they’re sick anyway. Oh & I’m SURE Clowney & Watt will HATE having Nix tie up 2 defenders to free them up for their REIGN OF POTENTIAL TERROR. Sigh, could we please just snag one of those D’s over a game of Texas hold em’? So REALLY guys, HONESTLY NOW, does anyone have our 1st 3 red’s graded higher than a C or C-? 170. 170 D3FB said at 12:45 AM on May 10th, 2014:

I like it. Solid picks. Lattimer and Matthews were pretty equal to me so that was fine. I thought Huff could go as early as the third so I didn’t mind him. The other guys I wanted at 86 were Daquan Jones, Desir, Gaines, or Ka’deem. All but Gaines are still on the board. Little annoyed that OL is so depleted, there are only a handful of remaining guy I like and none of them project to be more than great backups who you let compete for a starting job.
I don’t understand the crying about picking WR instead of defense. We didn’t really miss out on any exceptional defensive players. We now have a very good WR corps. We have a great young pass rusher that I coveted. I’d give it a B+.

  171. 171 livingonapear said at 4:39 AM on May 10th, 2014:

Huff is a tough motherf?cker. Returns kicks, plays ST. Matthews is tough too. They will block and fight for the ball. They will both make 53 and be on the field a lot. They can both do back shoulder catches. Huff has a pretty slick slant move, and really violently smashes the db on blocks.

Decent RAC skills but gets caught easily
Smaller catch radius than a similar-sized guy in Jarvis Landry
Don’t think he’ll return kicks or play on the outside at the next level
Occasional lapses in focus and can whiff on blocks

Here’s what I love about our draft so far… no one knew what the Eagles were doing in spite of it being so “obvious” what they had to do.

Also, I think people in general under value the fact that a team can’t “just trade up” in a later round to get their guy (or trade down to that spot for that matter). They have to actually find a willing trade partner.

Also, when asked the value of anything the proper answer is… whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

The ESPN draft grader basically said “I have no clue why they picked Paul Richardson where they did, but it’s Pete Carroll soooooo….thumbs up!”

I’m probably higher on Justin Britt than any other draftnik type. Thought the kid had great feet and could be an excellent ZBS lineman if he added some strength. Even I only had a fourth round grade on him.

We didn’t get Will Clarke, obviously this draft is a fail.

I don’t see the problem here you have addressed two team needs have two starters of of the picks the third being a quality ST and our in a spot to pick up your third starter in this draft first pick tomorrow with Desir. You then have picked up 3 starters in a draft that we had poor position and few picks . Then with late 4th take a chance on Christian Jones if still available perhaps can trade BG for another 5th or 6th then pick up some depth at OL and or DL and DAT with seventh. Seems like a decent B B + draft if that could all happen

All you people moaning & groaning about this pick need to relax. This draft has been so unpredictable anything could’ve happened. Better to be safe than sorry. They learned that when Green Bay took HaHa Clinton Dix right before they did.

Hell .. They could’ve possibly been trying to trade down again. That’s how some things work. Just like the Marcus Smith pick. I actually liked the pick. Sure it was a little bit of a reach.. but again; Better to be safe than sorry. If you got your eyes on a player. You have to do what you have to do to get him.

If they wouldn’t have gotten Josh Huff with the #86th pick who else would they’ve grabbed? Donte Moncrief? He’s inconsistent. Phillip Gaines isn’t the size Chip wants his corners. Basically he wants a “Richard Sherman”.

Here’s what I’m thinking will happen:
4th Round 1st pick: Either Keith McGill or Pierre Desir.
    4th Round ***: Telvin Smith ( He’s a LB/S hybrid. Could become full time S)
(***if the Eagles can trade Brandon Graham for a 4th round pick)

5th Round 1st pick: If the above trade doesn’t happen Dontae Johnson could convert to a Safety.

5th Round 22nd pick: Whichever decent ILB is left. (or Daniel McCullers)

7th Round 22nd pick: Taylor Hart
