Eagles Add S Ed Reynolds
Posted: May 10th, 2014 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 142 Comments »At the bottom of the 5th round the Eagles added Safety Ed Reynolds from Stanford. This is my least favorite pick so far. Reynolds is a solid player, but just wasn’t a compelling guy to me. I preferred guys like Dion Bailey and Craig Loston.
Reynolds has pretty good size at 6-1, 207. He is a good tackler. Reynolds attacks his targets, wraps up and puts them down. He is a solid hitter, but I never saw him really lay someone out. You can argue that is a good thing in today’s NFL. Big hits draw flags and fines more than ever.
Reynolds is a “safe” Safety. He does his job. He sits back, reads the play and then reacts. He isn’t going to take chances. Reynolds shows good awareness and field vision. He has good hands and catches the ball smoothly. He won’t be an INT machine, but if the ball comes his way, he will catch it.
Chip Kelly said that Reynolds did visit Philly and they were very impressed with his ability to breakdown plays and explain things. The coaches would feel comfortable with Reynolds running the defense and making calls on the field. This sticks with the theme of the Eagles drafting smart guys this year.
Tony Pauline mentioned Reynolds as possibly being a Top 60 guy a few weeks ago. I never bought that, but was surprised he fell this far. Good value pick.
The addition of Reynolds does tell you that Jaylen Watkins will primarily be a CB. I’ll write more about Watkins later tonight.
Here are some highlights of Reynolds. He won’t wow you, but he’s the kind of smart player and solid tackler that can help a defense eliminate big plays on the back end.

if you had to judge Reynolds based solely on his 2012 tape, would it still be your least favorite?
Reynolds = a more intelligent and athletic version of Kurt Coleman.
I hope so. Kurt got a bit of a raw deal here in Philly. Played hard. On the wrong end of too many highlight reels though.
I feel like people compare players to others based on similar skin color too much
Huh?!
Reynolds is a guy that keeps everything in front of him and is a very solid tackler. That just doesn’t come off as Kurt Coleman to me
I had Coleman as a solid tackler in my memories. His physical limitations were just the problem in the end.
Right. Coleman was a speed bump. This guy has some stop sticks with his play.
Sconces would play the race card!
I thought sconces were white???
Nah, you’re thinking of everyone’s least favorite pastery… the scone. He is talking interior lighting.
My bad. Must be the hunger in me.
I don’t think you know what race card means
I am pretty sure he was talking about Vettel and his racing cards…
was Coleman really that unathletic?
He is a solid backup who will play assignment football. If one of our starters get injured the coaches will have confidence in him to step in and do a fine job and take care of his assignment. Good Pick. Hey Tommy, did you notice that the two drafts with Chip, all of the players drafted were from big colleges. There are literally no small school guys. Looks like they highly value level of competition .
Tommy, you now have chip’s safety blueprint. Smart enough to run the defense, and not going to allow big plays to become a score. I love how smooth this kid looks grabbing thefootball. Looks natural, and it felt like he was reading the plays well. It’s a shame he doesn’t measure out better, but I’m glad we are giving him a shot.
I will add, has to be able to handle man coverage against slot receivers. Or have you recovered from the nightmares of Chung trying to cover in the slot?
Who is going to cover the CB blitz? Or is that over now?
Wash got Seastrunk
Well Tommy, we can hope Loston or Bailey make it to UDFA.
Zumwalt to Pitt
Re: Christian Jones
Wow.
Considering how far he’s slid, even factoring the positive dope test, it just goes to show (speaking for myself) . . . .
NFL teams see college players so differently than fans, even those who watch the cut-ups.
The issues with Jones go well beyond the one failed drug test we know about.
__________
Vontaze Burfict went from pre-season 1st Rd pick to RFA.
Drugs was not an issue. Just erratic behavior. But things have worked out, so far, for him.
I’d love to know what’s going on with CJ.
T-LAW is on PhiladelphiaEagles.com right now . . . 4:22pm, ET
T-Law rocking his knowledge
He deserves his PBR sixer after that interview!
Zumwalt gone.
T-LAW . . .
Nice interview — sorry — great interview on PE.com.
Great point about MSmith being the first 34-scheme selection of the CK-era.
Now . . . get back here!
I’m back. And thanks for the nice words.
Was nice listening to you, mate.
Agreed
LDT to the Chiefs lol.
Old habits die hard I guess.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
AR rubbing it in. Who DAT LDT?!!
Ha, I didn’t even think of that.
Good pick, but you can’t help but laugh at the fact that Big Red took him.
The Chiefs might say Polian is picking and AR have no hand in it, but this draft just screams AR draft
It’s incredible just how familiar it is.
Oh please. we all know Andy would never draft an undersized fastball in the first round.
Really thought he would have been a great depth pick with the potential to replace Herremans or Mathis in a year or two.
T-Law:
During your PE.com interview, you weren’t asked about the Bryce Brown trade.
I’d like to have heard any additional thoughts you had.
Chip Kelly, during the Taylor Hart-presser, had some very kind words for Matthew Tucker. Called Tucker the most in-shape RB right now.
Seems that, whatever MTuck did this off-season, he’s made a good impression on the Head Coach.
______________
I’ve listened to all the phone-call interviews of the Eagles’ selections.
Everyone of them seemed very sharp, very thoughtful, not the usual platitudes.
I’ll be writing about the RB situation.
Tucker is a player that it’s tough to get a read on.
Understanding that at this point you have less than a 1 in 10 chance of a player making the team, who would you like the Eagles to take a flyer on? I’m about out of ideas.
If he is around at the Eagles 7th round pick, I think Colt Lyerla is worth a flyer. Passing on him would speak volumes to the kids viability as a pro prospect.
Both Lyerla and Jones are talented. I just think given the emphasis Chip and Howie have placed on character, we can probably rule both out.
lol Christian Jones
A smart, solid, sure tackler at Safety sounds amazing.
Andy took LDT
covered below… carry on.
Why is it NFLN isn’t using Cosell during draft weekend? Seems like a steal for pe.com
Wouldnt mind them taking Max Bullough, worth a flyer
They’re talking about him now I think.
I know we drafted 2 wr and I am forgeting who is left not paying full attention but Brandon Coleman and Skov are guys I like if they are here
I’ll defer to T-Law . . .
Both have knee issues.
Skov might as well get cyborg implants in his legs.
that’s the best line of the day!
(Other than Baloophi’s stuff)
One of those rare drafts where you actually wish you had more 7th rounders.
Can someone explain how UDFA works? Do the players get to chose where they go?
That’s a bingo
its like FA recruiting kind of
Teams will pay their target RFA a bonus to get them, too
Its like college recruiting, just here it is legal to pay them
Seattle drafts SDSt safety Eric Pinkins . . .
6’3″ 220lbs.
Kam, Jr.
Just to point out how far off the mock drafters can be, I remember when Tahj Boyd, who just went to the Jets late the 6th round, was considered a first round possibility.
never heard him in round 1 heard a lot of 3/4
It was really early in the process. Around when the college season ended and before the combine and all-star games.
People argued he would have been a 1st rounder last year, This years Barkley
Those early mocks are as worthless as they come. I’m not even sure why they bother.
Because they generate clicks, and I’m as guilty of reading them as anyone else.
McCullers to Pittsburgh
Vikings take Shamar Stephen
Minx Jinx!
There goes Shamar Stephen…
Odds on this pick being another Ducker? I’d say 50%.
Good chance for Mitchell
Wait I thought this was our pick
We’re 224.
yeah I realized thanks…
224
The #Eagles final pick is almost here. Some names…CB Terrance Mitchell, LB Adrian Hubbard, ILB Brock Coyle, OL Matt Patchan. Maybe a PK?
I’ve given up on Christian Jones as a pick. Would love him as a UDFA.
Hoping for Zach Kerr.
I’d guess Mitchell just cause of the Ducks connection.
I know I put Adrian Hubbard on my “Ten Foot Pole” list, but he’s got intriguing measurables… similar to Dion Jordan.
I know nothing about the player, but I’d love to have a running back named Storm Johnson.
Almost as good as having a DT named “Tank”.
reuinites with Bortles
Terrance Mitchell – CB; Lyerla – TE/RB; Coleman – NT
More like BOOOOOOOO Allen…
He spells his first name wrong
He’s vowel-heavy. And likely bowel-heavy, but I digress…
Great men don’t squeeze so many letters into a single syllable. Like Bo Jackson.
Beau Allen, Wisconsin. Never heard of him.
If the year were 1977, you’d say the same thing about 7th Rd pick Charlie Johnson from U-Colorado.
CJ was then called a “Defensive Nose Guard.”
Allen is a (now called) NT.
Johnson made that Vermiel-era defense. Created space for Lemaster and Bergey.
Great choice.
Seems to be a tradition of 7th round DT’s that you’ve never heard of.
What’s Jeff Owens up to these days?
Almost seems like the Eagles are deliberately avoiding taking anyone you want at a particular pick Tommy.
333 pounds.
Beau Allen could be a Game of Thrones or Capital One extra…
Or a guy for Riley Cooper to go to concerts with
o u c h
I remember reading a piece by Shiel or Jimmy or someone about Allen as a late-round backup target at NT.
It was McManus
http://www.phillymag.com/birds247/2014/04/21/allen-fit-eagles/
I LOVE this pick!
Backup NT. Doubt he develops into anything more, but I’m not complaining about line depth.
Beau Allen, DT, Wisconsin
Height: 6-3. Weight: 325.
Projected 40 Time: 5.39.
Projected Round (2014): 5-7.
However his 10 yrd split was 1.65 secs. Vert was like 31.5 inches.
Projected Travel Accessory: Seat belt extender
Never heard of the guy, but he has glorious hair.
Mel Kiper is jealously crushing his highlighter…
Kiper could only dream of that hair-product-less luxuriousness.
Seriously, if this guy doesn’t make it as a football player, he has a bright future in Pantene commercials.
If he cant beat blocks, maybe he can beat Kelly LeBrocks…
Ouch. I need some coffee…
Offseason conditioning should help this prospects joke telling stamina.
I’ll be working with a prop comedian to improve my timing.
I got to know a prop comedian a little bit many years ago. His name is The Legendary Wid, and he still performs as far as I know. He was working a club in Wildwood, NJ, and I was staying in the same run down old house there. During the day he would dumpster dive to find props for his show and think of puns to go along with them.
Good bye Square.
From NFL.com: Big, beefy, active, loquacious nose tackle.
They’re measuring verbal contributions as part of the evaluation process now?
Looking forward to the interview, I guess.
That’s also his profile on match.com
Favorite movie: Rapunzel
Can’t live without my: Conditioner.
He might be just the injection of energy that a haggard Spadaro and drowsy Reese need…
Loquaciousness is a valuable asset for bench players. Someones gotta make the starters laugh when they come off for a breather.
There are a ton of UDFA we can still bring in. This draft was amazing!
Chip says he thought the ILB prospects fell off hard after CJ Mosley
Chip says drafting all defense today is just the way the board fell
The Eagles have had good fortune with D-linemen in Rd 7.
All Pro DE Carl “Big Daddy” Hairston in ’75.
All Pro NT Charlie Johnson in ’77.
DE Will Wynn in ’74, a guy who got sidetracked off the field.
Long time ago, for sure.
Last year, the Eagles selected OU DE David King. Didn’t work out.
But this guy, Beau Allen, he’s a player.
From what I read of his comments, he likes the complexity of the 3-4. It makes his job fun he says.
More recently I remember Jeff Owens & Keyonta Marshall as big 7th round DTs. Hopefully this guy’s much better.
Damn, couple of Kickers off the board. No idea if any of them were good, but fewer options to compete with Henery is not ideal.
Pete Carroll just said high motor, and now my television is broken
I liked his instincts! And like people have mentioned, looks to be a solid tackler. I liked his aggressiveness with the ball in his hands…he was not just happy with getting the pick, he was trying to take it back to the house! Also was it just me or did he look really fast?
He ran in the 4.4s to 4.5 flat at his pro day.
Did Kelly just say the team will bring in a rookie FA QB if he’s the right guy?
I don’t know but maybe Brett Smith
They’ll need to have some QBs for camp, the way they run practices.
Beau Allen in 4/21 article: “Philadelphia is a place I’d love to be.”
http://www.phillymag.com/birds247/2014/04/21/allen-fit-eagles/
The Rams took Sam.
Looks like a Kurt Coleman and how he should’ve been.
