4th Round – DB Jaylen Watkins

Chip Kelly loves versatile weapons…on offense and defense. The Eagles added another one in DB Jaylen Watkins. He played S, CB and Nickelback for the Florida Gators. This is a guy who can do multiple things and be moved around in the defense.

Watkins is 5-11, 194. He ran 4.41 at the Combine so that adds serious speed to the defense. Watkins really stood out at the Senior Bowl. He was terrific in Mobile, just smothering receivers in the coverage drills. He had the speed to run with them, but also the agility to handle cuts and moves. Watkins has pretty good ball skills. He broke up 20 passes over the last 3 years, despite being moved around. He only picked off 3 passe at UF, but he’s got good hands.

I prefer using Watkins at CB. He really stood out in Mobile in man coverage. I’m not sure that skill is going to have the same value at Safety as it does at CB. We’ll see what the Eagles have planned for him. He has the size and skills to handle multiple spots.

Bill Davis was at Watkins Pro Day and the Eagles brought him to Philly for a visit so this is someone they had a lot of interest in.

Solid pick.

The Eagles considered moving back, but didn’t want to lose Watkins. This is a player they really wanted.

Interesting that they are opting for all seniors.

The emphasis on character and football IQ this offseason has really been remarkable.

To be honest, I love it. Not the right model for every team, but I think it is for Chip, considering the program and what he asks of his players. Really needs everyone to buy in, and he’s getting guys that will 100%.

  3. 3 FrenchEagles said at 12:29 PM on May 10th, 2014:

It’s where the decision to cut Desean Jackson seems logical. He was not a fit with what Chip wants to do with his team.

Kelly seems to really want mature, dedicated, hard working players. We’ll see how that works out. It can make a lot of sense if you know how to use them.

he also needs reliable backups – not everyone needs to be a starter

That piece about his background made me like the pick more, which is probably not how this is supposed to work, but whatever, we’re fans, its nice to root for kids you like.

When you think about, only cooper is signed through next year. No guarantees that Maclin Returns. Huff has speed to stretch field vertically, so the pick is justified. I love Matthews, he is like a reggie wayne.

  20. 20 GEAGLE said at 12:32 PM on May 10th, 2014:

I’d have to agree with Tom that I think we will prefer him at CB..think Exum or Dontae would have been versatile DBs who project as safeties better than Watkins, but Jalen looks like a better CB to me(unless Exum really gets his speed back)…

This was a really solid pick..don’t think people realize that we are building some nice depth in the secondary…all I know is say bye bye to that bum Curtis Marsh..and with Nolan and Watkins, it may spell the end of Roc “lead foot” Carmichael..

  21. 21 anon said at 12:34 PM on May 10th, 2014:

I think they wnat DBs more than CBs and Ss per say, interesting to see how they use him. Good that as a backup he can learn all secondary spots, but will he ever be good enough to start at one?

Don’t be so quick to dismiss man coverage skills in a safety. Seems like that’s exactly what Chip and Davis want. They used Chung in man coverage and as a nickel defender despite horrifying results on multiple occasions last year, including into the playoffs when it should have been obvious at that point that he couldn’t handle that task. Just imagine how much of it they would have done if our safeties were capable of doing it. Then they went right after Malcolm Jenkins explicitly because he could man cover once free agency started. Not saying that Watkins will play safety for us instead of corner, but just that it might be time for us fans to readjust how we view those particular roles in this new defense. Seems to me they want to blur the lines and avoid the same match up issues they are trying to create on offense by doing so.

  167. 167 shah8 said at 1:17 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Sure, just like simply cutting Desean Jackson was “unexpected”.

I’m beginning to think we have one of those Ahabs as coach. Kelly has systematically gotten rid the truly high end talents, and refused to draft any but our RT.

  168. 168 anon said at 1:21 PM on May 10th, 2014:

He’s a system coach. Not about talent but system fit, measurables, intangibles (hard working, leaders). Fact that he was traded probably says that he wasn’t in the building every day trying to learn how to run in the system, etc. We let Allen back b/c he’s a student learns the system even though he’s not good.

  169. 169 shah8 said at 1:36 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Yeah, but ultimately, guys like those fail. Exceptional talent anchors everyone else. We get rid of guys like DJax, and draft the heir to Damaris Johnson in Huff. Instead of truly getting BPA or anything like it, we draft Marcus Smith, who doesn’t have a evident high ceiling (Barr has a high ceiling, Dion Jordan has a high ceiling, Marcus Smith looks like he can be someone better than JAG who starts at ROLB). This is a terrible draft, and a terrible offseason in general for me. I just now looked at the 2013 draft selection, and see the same thing! Zach Ertz, for example, is not better than Jace Amaro in terms of his ceiling, and doesn’t offer *that* much more than what we already had at TE. Frankly, if we didn’t get the number four pick last year, how much do you want to bet that we’d have picked some solid underwhelming guy in last year’s first round? Bennie Logan is a good rotational guy who might grow into his role, but it’s still not a sure thing, but Matt Barkley was a horrible selection in hindsight, though I think of it as just not panning out. Like Dominique Easley, and his bad knees, it was a question of whether Barkley had just enough arm to play, and we lost that bet.

Seattle takes risks on getting their top drafts. They waited one extra round for Wilson, they do things like take that tiny, fast dude yesterday, and they get good FA to sign as well. Seattle *trusts* their coaching, and trusts them to make a difference. Do you see the NY Giants shopping David Wilson? Or unceremoniously cutting Victor Cruz, who’s probably just as crazy as DJax?

Frankly, I have to be alarmed at the state of the Eagles.

  171. 171 mksp said at 1:46 PM on May 10th, 2014:

I’m far from alarmed, but I see where you’re coming from.

I think you’re underrating certain elements of “talent” and overrating others.

Playing football is about more than size & speed.

I have no reason not to trust Chip at this point. As AC says, we’ll know in a couple years whether this method of program building is effective or not.

  172. 172 shah8 said at 2:00 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Of course, football is more than size and speed. There’s agility, there’s vision, there’s film room work…

What you seem to miss is that evident talent is still evident. Not everyone is going to be Mathis, with his hidden timing and balance. Even so Mathis is still a liability whenever he *has* to be strong and maybe roadgrade. Yup, we can coach around that! However, we can coach around that because…oh lookie here, that’s Mr Peters, Mr. Mathis’ neighbor!

I don’t play that stupid game where people talk about how QBs don’t have to have arm. Logan Thomas was the next serious QB taken after David Carr (Garrapolo is straight backup), even though some games, you just don’t know what he was aiming at! Sure, you don’t have to have the best arm, but you *do* have to have more than enough, for almost all the feasible plays. Lightning in the bottle is still lightning in the bottle. You have Matt Ryan? Gotta have Julio Jones and his friends. Mebbe some good guys on the line like the newest Matthews.

We’re shedding top end talent and not making up for it in either FA or draft. If one guy was truly not coachable, then try again with the next really talented dude. Instead, we’re getting seniors with production from playing against younger players, and who doesn’t truly have much in the way of lightning. We get guys like Jordan Matthews, but are unwilling to risk even a lower draft pick for Martavis Bryant. Instead, Josh Huff is so magnificent…

Solid guys are great, you know? And nobody can fill the roster with high ceiling guys, because many will bust for various reasons. However, you *do* have to *try*.

  238. 238 Anders said at 1:38 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Powell makes sense as a move around LB, he has the same size as Kiko Alonso and Lokombo who both played hybrid roles at Oregon

  250. 250 Anders said at 1:46 PM on May 10th, 2014:

The Niners got old at safety and potential has no pass rush, but they took Carridine last year to replace Smith and just took a safety in the first in back to back drafts so replace the lost safeties.

This year they drafted 2 OLs to replace some of those they are loosing.
