More Postgame Thoughts

* The pass rush was better. The Eagles only got 2 sacks, but they affected Big Ben. Sometimes that meant moving him off his spot. There was a play when Mychal Kendricks pressured Ben and he lobbed a pass downfield that Nolan Carroll picked off. Sacks are fun because you see the QB go down, but pressure has a value as well. That INT is worth a handful of sacks.
The Eagles still need to get better, but at least this was a step in the right direction.
* Rookie WR Jordan Matthews caught a pass out of the backfield. The cool thing about that is that the play was designed to specifically get him the ball. It is obvious the coaches don’t see him as a typical rookie. It is important to mix him into the offense and to help him grow this year. God forbid anything happens to Mac or Coop, the Eagles need Matthews to be able to contribute. Get his feet wet when you can so that if things do go wrong and he’s needed, Matthews has a better chance of handling the situation successfully.
* It was good to see Coop out there. He has an excellent size-speed combination and is a good fit for this offense. It also helps that Foles trusts him. You could see that on the deep ball that went to Coop in the end zone. He was covered, but Foles put the ball in there to give Coop a chance to make a play.
The drops need to stop, obviously. Let’s hope that was some rust from all the time he’s missed this summer.
* OLB Marcus Smith is a good run defender. He can set the edge. He can shed blocks. He can make tackles. Smith still needs a lot of work as a pass rusher, but there is something to build on. His most impressive play came when he covered WR Antonio Brown down the sideline on a route. Smith had pretty good coverage. You don’t want that matchup, but there are times when the offense is going to come up with something that works perfectly. You hope that whatever defender is put in a tough position can do a reasonable job. Smith did more than that. Heck, he looked better than Curtis Marsh in coverage. Smith is a talented OLB.
* RB is a complicated position. I think the preseason finale vs the Jets could be a huge factor in making decisions. The backups will play a lot. They will be judged as runners, receivers, blockers and STers.
There is a compelling case for Chris Polk, Matt Tucker, Kenjon Barner and Josey Henry. The most simple factor here is health. If Polk can’t play, he’s in big trouble. The other 3 need to stay healthy.
One possibility would be going light at WR and keeping 4 RBs.
I need to study the game and see how these guys looked from an overall standpoint. STs play will be a huge part of that.
* My guess is that the Eagles would like to trade Brandon Graham. He certainly doesn’t appear to be part of the future here. He can rush the passer, but not is that enough to keep him? You already have one pass rush specialist in Vinny Curry. Beyond the starters at OLB, you have Marcus Smith, Bryan Braman and Travis Long. Smith isn’t going anywhere. Braman is supposed to be a key STer. Long is a player the team is interested in keeping, as you could see by having him play ILB and OLB vs the Steelers.
Graham can be a good role player and he’s a nice insurance policy for Trent Cole, but is he worth spending a roster spot on for that vs dealing him and getting a pick in return? There is no easy answer to this. Of course, the trade scenario only makes sense if some 4-3 team shows you they want Graham. I think some team would.
* DeMeco Ryans got flagged for an illegal hit. Then the Steelers had several questionable plays, but no flags. There were 2 hits on Brent Celek where his helmet popped off. There was also a hit on Shady’s TD that was awkward at best. Maclin was blocking near the goal line. Troy Polamalu came over and knocked the crap out of him, even though Mac was already engaged with someone and it didn’t affect the play. That to me was penalty material. Isn’t that the definition of unnecessary roughness?
Celek’s helmet popping off made those hits look worse than they were. I’m pretty sure at least one was completely clean, even though it looked bad. I need to check out the tape to be more sure.
* The running game was beautiful last night. Every RB had a run go for at least 14 yards. Those guys averaged more than 5 yards per carry as a group. I’m looking forward to seeing the OL in action. It looked like Kelce and Mathis had some really good blocks.
Even crazier was the way the backups handled the Steelers starting defense. I was shocked as Andrew Gardner and Matt Tobin opened big holes for backups to run on Lawrence Timmons. Polamalu and company. That’s insane.
But it did happen. And it was beautiful.

Worst part about the game was for those of us out of Philly having to watch on NFL network. Figured after watching the horrible NE broadcast team last week on NFLN, we’d at least get to hear the Philly broadcast, but hearing the NFLN guys doing it from the studio was truly awful.
That was dreadful. Hope NFLN abandons that idea next year. Very distracting.

True… But ATleast he circled cox and showed all the fools who been hating on cox how effective he Is… He basically forced the viewing fans and media to understand what cox does out there and how effective he Is…. Thanks to BALDI’S broadcast I haven’t seen any articles ripping cox these past two days
What I’d like to see them do is use the SAP channels so viewers can choose their favorite local broadcast feed.
well the difference to me was the network guys sounded like jackasses, the NESN guys are jackasses. that being said both broadcasts were bad, with the NFLN one being slightly less annoying.

First play of the game: “Oddly enough, the Philadelphia Eagles offense comes out with two tight ends. That’s a rarity because they rarely even have a tight end in some of their sets”
Second play of the game (on Coop): “He’s gonna have to be the guy who takes over that number one receiving position with DeSean Jackson down in Washington”

Well I remember Green/White, Orange/Black, Red/White, etc. without any difficulty. That is a start.
I know. When my 8 and 12 year old look at me after the commentators say something, like they can’t believe what an idiotic statement it was, then you know it’s bad.
Your kids will understand more once they take some more classes in geography and sociology and understand the true lack of intellect in the greater Pittsburgh area.

IMO, but I feel strongly about this, we can’t deal graham. We’re so lacking pass rush as it is, it makes little sense to deal your best edge rusher (and at this point I think Graham is a better rusher than Cole is, even if Cole is better at other things) even if he’s only going to be a situational rusher. I’d be all for trading graham to a 4-3 squad where he’d likely flourish in his natural scheme if we had better rushers on the team, but we just don’t. Billy Davis can only scheme so much pressure, we’re just starved for guys who can get after the quarterback naturally.
If graham is only going to play 30%, his impact won’t be that high anyway
I was hoping that if he plays 30% of the snaps on D, our opponent calls a pass play on half of those snaps, and we’re talking like 10 pressures – 5 QB hits – 2 sacks a game for a record breaking sack total of 32 sacks this year for Graham.
I’m really not going to judge curry and BG on what percentage of snaps they get…..for me, it’s all about what percentage of the 3rd down passing situations snaps they get…

They may be bad fits on first and second down, but they are PERFECT fits on 3rd down when we go to our 4 man lines…3rd down happens to be the crucial down…

I don’t really care if we don’t play them in base.. That really just means we won’t have them rushing the passer when teams pass on 1st and 2nd down….3rd down is crucial, even as a 3rd down specialist I don’t think fans respect what a crucial role that is… Getting off the field on 3rd down is a major part of the success puzzle..
The issue is going to be against good QBs that can run no-huddle, we’re not going to be able to sub Curry and Graham on the field. Luckily we only have 3 games vs. good QBs; Indy, Green Bay, Seattle.

Yes, that will be a problem… One decent thing in our favor to counter that is when they don’t let us sub Curry/BG in the game, at.east our NTs aren’t complete liabilities against the pass… Both Bennie and Beau have more pass rush ability than the typical NT run stuffer who are complete liabilities on 3rd down…..

Yeah, I don’t like Bennie for run-stuffing when I want to see both the Center and Guard terminated at the same time, but I love his activity level on pass downs. And to be honest, Fletcher Cox should be winning matchups on pass downs with ease.

yeah i’d let him play out the deal and see what happens in FA / draft next year. they won’t find a better rusher this season and unless they can trade bg for a starting kicker i don’t think it’s worth it.

Henry Josey looks really good, and he can square-up and go north/south really well–the antidote to sideways Bryce Brown. Supposedly, Kelly told him he didn’t have his full burst back yet from the knee injury. Can this kid get quicker? He’s got to at least make the practice squad. Shame he isn’t a wee bit bigger.
He will get picked up IMO, keep him and cut Polk (who I really like but can’t stay healthy)

Dolphins cut Egnew yesterday, meaning they gave up on a top 80 draft pick of the past GM…another year of Dion struggling as a 4-3 DE and they will be ready to give up Dion for Vinny Curry, since Vinny is everything they are trying to force Dion to become…I expect us to trade for Dion sometime between Febuary and June…
That would be sweet. -Especially if he really absorbs a lot of the pass-rushing stuff the Dolphins are trying to force on him as a DE this year. We’ll still need help getting to the QB, next year.

Josey made it out to the 20 on a return that was fumbled at the goal line by somebody else, that’s pretty special in itself, especially since our STs had a few problems getting to the 20 even on a clean return.
No, no, no trading Brandon Graham, especially considering he would net us what, a 5th round pick? Pass-rush is the most important thing on defense, and we can’t afford to let go of one of the few guys that can get to the passer.
We really should have picked Kelvin Benjamin at 22.
Seattle crushed a competent bears team like they were nothing…and I felt a chill come on about that game in the regular season.

I have not seen enough of the straight pro-throws that I’d like to see. Most everything is open from the system. Think that’s because of how the Eagles wanted to do preseason…
The same issues I had with Eagles defense last year(not enough true star talent) are still issues today.
Oh you thought N. Foles was A. Luck, T. Brady, or P. Manning? Glad you realize, even if he was it’d be impossible to tell from this system which emphasizes pre-snap reads and getting players in space.
That’s why N. Foles looks great, though M. Sanchez looks like he goes through progressions a lot faster than N. Foles.
Our offense is great but it’s only 2/3 as good as seattle’s defense who seems unscathed by new rules which many think are actually targeted at seattle.

I was just playing, I really don’t know how FSU prospects have faired in the NFL lately.
Corey Simon was a flat out quitter and lazy. He never played to his level of talent. Far more often the case with FSU guys than Tra Thomas.
Although Thomas could have taken his fitness a bit more seriously over his career to alleviate the back troubles that impaired his run blocking.
Haushka hit a 59 yarder today. no big deal -we can’t hit 31 yards. and sadly the comp we brought in is worse that our starter.
Gostkowski hit a 60yarder last night…. 60 yards… That’s almost double the length of the FG Alex missed vs steelers
Chicago’s 3rd down efficiency against seattle was 3-11 vs against phllly at 10-17 or twice as many 3rd down conversions allowe by us.

Let’s not remind each other about Marsh… I can’t wait to forget all about him…. It’s one thing to make mistakes,,, but to watch a CB play an entire game and never turn around in coverage to see a pass is just sooooo bad.., it’s a shame because he is usually in decent position.. It’s not like he is just getting roasted out there… He is usually sticking with his man, just messes up at the end refusing to see the ball..

I assume this is because he isn’t a natural CB… He is a converted RB…the successful corners can stay calm when the ball is in the air, not panick, make a play on the ball.,… Marsh does ok work the first 5 yards of a route, he then gets his hands off the WR and stays with them down field, but when the ball is in the air, he crumbles with fear of making a mistake… The good corners, the natural corners keep their cool when the ball is in their air, and they try to make a play on the ball…. When the ball is in the air, no matter how good marsh is covering the WR, he shows that he isn’t a natural CB….
What makes it weird though is how much positive press he was getting from practices.

Marsh shows plenty of ability as a CB until the last moment when he has to defend the pass..I’m sure he turns Around and makes plenty of plays on the ball in practice..but when the bright lights come on, they freeze being on an island…. I’d bet he doesn’t have that problem at all In practice… Wouldn’t be surprised if he was one of those guys who are great practice players that can’t translate to live game action…

Adding to that, playing against guys you know well, against plays you’ve seen a hundred times, and in a practice environment, there’s a comfort and confidence that doesn’t often carry over to the game. Without that confidence, you end up getting Marshed all game long.
Very true….. I don’t really pay attention to marsh when I catch live practices, but I’d bet he is one of those guys who is a practice all star, and just can’t carry it over to live action… Like you said, a lot of it is comfort… Nice and comfy in your practice environment he can play up to his abilities, bright lights come on and they freeze up

Right because a 3-4 OLB playing inside linebacker is a crazy concept. Not like Travis Long didn’t do that exactly this week.
With the skillset Marcus has shown so far I think he could potentially be a good ILB with the size chip would covet at that position. I don’t think that’s a crazy thing to bring up.
And I remember when Lawrence Timmons was too stupid to learn how to play OLB in the 3-4 so the Steelers moved him into the ILB spot that doesn’t make the calls on D so he could run to a spot that the other ILB told him to.
Marcus isn’t Travis Long…Travis long is a fringe player seeing if he can be an emergency ILB to add value to try and be worth making this roster. Lol eagles aren’t trying to make Long an ILB, just seeing if he can also wear that hat, in an emergency situation

Btw, if you do have a talent who can become a great OLB AND a great ILB, you play him at OLB…why? It’s significantly more valued than ILB…

OLB is one of the 3 most valued positions..,.just look how you always have to over draft OLBs because they come off the board quickly…. Just look how much money it costs to sign edge rushers,,, we seen Everson Griffin, an edge rusher who never has been a real NFL starter for extended periods of time, get 20millipj in GUARENTEED money in free agency…

Marcus can grow into a quality OLB, so why would you want to move him to ILB?… It’s like if Nick FOles were capable of being a great TIght end,,, if you have a kid that can be a quality QB, why would you want to make him into a good tight end?

Second string guys are important and they will be playing.

I’m hoping they get even those guys out of there as fast as possible any really only give extended snaps to guys they plan on cutting. I want to see roster players 54 through 75 getting most of the snaps.

But the second strong players at positions that we use in real games, like our second string DL of curry, Beau Allen who will be used in games, and guys like Jordan Mathews, Nolan Carroll… Get those guys out of the game ASAP… I would even prefer them not playing at all
Yup. I’d love to see those guys you mentioned clowning with the starters after about one series. Let Square, Marsh, Casey Matthews, Carmichael, Keelan Thug Johnson, etc. all risk injury.

This isn’t our first time playing a 4th preseason game. How much did 2’s play last year? I honestly don’t remember.
This is probably the first time I have ever been excited or interested about a 4th preseason game… We had NO depth last year, doubt many of us paid attention to last years 4th game,, I don’t even remember it…
Might get better results than Marsh and Carmichael…

everyone is bagging on smith but mack considered by many the top pass rusher in the draft hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire.
My only beef with Smith thus far was when he was taken a round / round .5 early. I love the potential and his work vs. the run has been correctly highlighted by Tommy. He’ll keep improving, but he won’t be an impact guy round one.
As a side note, it wouldn’t shock me if Zimmer is intentionally hiding how he’s going to use Mack just so folks don’t get film on it. That dude knows how to get guys loose on D.
If we could have gotten smith in round 2, we would have waited til round two to draft him…. Dude the cardinals were going to take him with the next pick… The skins and cowboys would have raced to pick him ahead of us in round Two..

The smart draft media all heard rumblings that Marcus could go in round 1…. Personally, in my gut, I was worried the cowboys would draft him with the 15th pick…

Drives me crazy when people say we didn’t have to take him when we did, when in REALITY, we turned down more draft picks opting NOT to trade back with the Vikings because we didn’t think Marcus would still be available 6 draft spots later…

I was trusting more than Mel Kiper and not the league that does things like take Jaquann Jarrett in the 2nd round and Jon Harris in the first.
If we didn’t draft Marcus when we did, we probably get stuck desperately trying to trade to secure Demarcus Lawrence or Trent Murphy, who I’m happy landed in our division
I guess we’ll never know, but I’ll always stick with my results on first-pick being the most accurate!

Eagles knew they were a year away for possibly losing Graham and Cole….would have been irresponsible to not draft a talented OLB to groom, so he can be ready to contribute on 2015 if we lose both predators… Sucks we couldn’t get Clowney… Could you imagine? I like Marcus, I just liked him better with me trading down a few times, getting more picks, and still getting him later. I was the greatest mock-draft GM of all time.
Isn’t that what we did? Didn’t we get a 3rd rounder to move back and get Marcus?…don’t remember if we got a 3rd or a 4th but we got value We were offered chance to trade down again from the Vikings and get more value, but the Eagles knew Marcus wouldn’t be on the board if we traded back again….. That’s why it drives me insane when people say he was a first round reach… People can’t say that if in reality he wouldn’t have lasted til round 2 even if we weren’t interested in him….

Finally, the real explanation – those mock-draft simulators are way off in their player rankings and not reflective of team draft boards. Geags is right, if the Eagles wanted Marcus, they had to take him where they did.
But my point is that team draft boards are just as foolish. Mike Mitchell in the 2nd by the Raiders? The Bills taking EJ Manuel that early last year. The simulators / mocks are no better / worse in the long run than who some teams actually take.
The point being is that you’re making the Eagles out to be one of those teams by saying they could have traded down again and gotten Smith. I think I’m going to trust the Eagles evaluation process over some programmer/blogger that builds a simulator by compiling other draftniks rankings and trade value charts to provide a make believe drafting experience. I think the simulations are fun as well, but never believe they reflect actuality other than by educated accident. Seriously, do you honestly believe Howie would have pulled the trigger on Marcus when he did if he thought he could get him later AND add another draft pick to boot? Remember, he and his staff have spoken with all the other GMs and scouting/personnel people behind the scenes, they’ve grouped players into tiers and ran simulations on how the board could fall and what decision they would make, they’ve lined up possible trade partners and modeled different team’s drafting strategy/history to put themselves in the best position possible come their turn. If you were given a scouting staff and millions of dollars to evaluate talent and set a draft board, I think you would have a stronger sense of what to expect than just using a mock draft simulator.
The point is we’ll never know, but the expectations for what Smith has to produce are now set at first round draft pick level. Mike Mamula, rightly or wrongly, had to produce both at #7 level + that of Warren Sapp, for his entire career based on his draft position.
I really like Smith as a potential good player, but the bar is now set at first round. I hope his play lives up to it.
Expectations by whom, the coaching staff? Does Chip care what Les Bowen or Sal Palantonio or Brian Billick have to write or say when it comes to the development of a player? It’s like Chip said, the hype around the Draft is unbelievable – I think Chip and his staff do a great job insulating the players from undue outside influences that have nothing to do with helping a player grow and develop.
He destroyed the falcons — they didn’t eve play Watt. Is LJ back when we play the texans? If not it’s going to be a looooooong day.

No, we’re paid to keep order in an environment that needs it. Law enforcement, when responding to calls outside of bars / clubs, needs to do the same thing. The correct move of patrons, such as Johnson, is to shut up, follow instructions, and move it along to somewhere else.

Well you certainly aren’t the arbitrator of that and neither is Johnson. There are compliance requirements that you need to observe when instructed to do something. Obey those, and you’d not be touched. That is how things are done. Get told to stop doing something, stop doing it. Get told you need to walk out and leave, then walk out and leave.
Anything aggressive that might happen beyond that is a failure of compliance to reasonable instructions. If you feel you’ve been treated unreasonably, get a lawyer.
