Sunday’s Moves Become Official

Since the Eagles made the first 8 signings officially known this afternoon, I’m guessing the final slots won’t be filled in the next few hours. Normally this is when the Eagles are talking to players who have multiple offers and who are trying to find the best situation, financially and otherwise.

No real surprises. Now for some thoughts on the players.
Andrews played mostly LG at Oregon State. He played a lot of C this summer and his value is in being able to handle both spots. Andrews needs to get bigger and stronger before he even thinks about going against staring competition. Solid athlete. Should be a good practice player.
Graf was a RT at USC, but played LT for the Eagles. Limited athlete, but a tough, competitive player who really battles on every snap. Smart player who uses angles to help him overcome his lack of quickness and agility. Graf played LG in the Jets game after the Tobin injury. I don’t know if he has an NFL future, but should be a good practice player.
Pratt had some good moments this summer. I’m not sure what his ceiling is. Good blocker and STs player, which the Eagles require from their WRs. Should be good practice player and might challenge for a reserve role in 2015.
Murphy. I get that Kelly likes the way Murphy practices. He must be the Jerry Rice of practice players. I don’t like seeing Murphy on the squad because I don’t think he’s got an NFL future and there seem to be lots of WRs out there with more talent. If this is Kelly’s one vice, I can deal with it. But I’m not a fan.
Why Tucker and not Josey? Tucker is a better blocker and STs player. He was here last year and knows the offense. I thought he had a real shot at the roster this year. Josey is a tough subject. I need to re-watch the Jets game before saying too much. There is no doubt that he lit up teams this preseason, but there are 2 key questions. First, how much of that was him vs the system and players around him? Second, could he have that kind of success against starting players? The Eagles obviously feel there are some issues with Josey and that is why he’s on the street.
Last year we all went nuts when the Eagles cut Emmanuel Acho and Chris McCoy. Those seemed like awful moves. The Eagles turned out to be right. You have to be very careful when judging preseason success.
I’m pretty sure the Eagles kept Kelikiipi just so I’d have to learn how to spell his name. Or maybe they just wanted to have another good 3-4 DL available. Kelikiipi can help in practice and he could become a good backup NT in the future.
Acho had a solid summer and was part of the Eagles last year. No brainer to keep him around.
Reynolds is a player that is tailor-made for the practice squad. He’s smart, tough and has the size/strength to play in the league. Reynolds isn’t special athletically. In order for him to succeed in the league, Reynolds has to anticipate plays. He needs to play fast based on his eyes rather than his legs. Practicing and going to meetings for a year will be a big help in him making the roster next year. Heck, he could be added at some point this year.
The Eagles like their starting Safeties, Malcolm Jenkins and Nate Allen. Earl Wolff had a good summer and should be a good #3 Safety. Chris Maragos played his best football in the preseason finale. He will be a good STer and can be effective on defense if needed. You don’t want Maragos starting, but that’s true of almost every team’s 4th Safety.
Reynolds is a 5th round pick. He’s not here to steal a starting job. The Eagles like him and think he can be a good player, but some people seem to have unrealistic expectations for him. Reynolds showed enough this summer to make you think he’s got an NFL future, but wasn’t so good you felt he had to be on the roster, let alone on the field. The practice squad is ideal for him. Let him develop.
Believe it or not, the Eagles like their Safeties. They might turn out to be wrong, but right now that’s not a position of concern for the team. I do think they were hoping that Reynolds, Keelan Johnson or another young player would play better this summer. Johnson was a major disappointment. As for Reynolds, I’m sure the team hoped he would play as well as Wolff did last summer, but that didn’t happen. Reynolds was okay, but nothing to write home about.

Josey was signed to the Jags PS. You wonder if that has anything to do with playing the Eagles next week.
Damion Square was claimed by the Chiefs.
Former OL Donald Hawkins is now with Dallas. OG Karim Barton made the Browns roster. Good for them.
Alejandro Villanueva is on the PS in Pittsburgh…as an OL. That’s interesting. Good for him.

I hope they add a pass rusher for one spot. The other could be a DB or QB. Maybe a TE or WR. Lots of choices.

Will they announce whether the Eagles tried to make a waiver claim? I’m very surprised they didn’t grab a LB. There were some out there that could have been a fit.
We have to wait to find out that stuff through various reports. Nothing is made official.
I wish that would change.

I like the Practice squad for Raw players with some nice untapped potential to realize… For example, I will always prefer the high ceiling of Momah, to will Murphy types who are more polished, but don’t have legit NFL ceilings
Acho might be here strictly to call up if one of the ILB’s go down, rather than as a true developmental prospect.

Nah, we have better OLB depth now (Smith and Braman), they instead cross trained Long to ILB to replace Casey
Nah… If you wanted to cross train a LB, our best bet Is Marcus playing some ILB, he would be better at it than Long, if he weren’t a rookie so inexperienced playing defense. Braman playing some ILB could be doable.. Probably runs better than Meco at his age
yeah I don’t get Momah over Murphy. Not only does Momah have an opportunity for growth, but also his rare size brings value to the scouting team. Facing a big reciever this week? Momah is a good guy to have around to practice against.

The old adage in the NFL is you have to be able to pass protect at least a little to get on the field. Josey did not show this. He was never going to be great at it but against the Jets he flat out whiffed on several attempts and almost got Barkley killed by LB’s with a free shot.
Pass protection is something RBs often have to learn. The question is while Josey looked good, how special is his talent really?
My take is that a smaller RB who isnt a great pass catcher, is not something special (tho I really wanted to keep him).

Forgive me for trolling, but I’d be pretty pumped if the Eags finagled a way to replace Will Murphy with Stephen Hill on the PS. I’m sure there’s a bunch of reasons that can’t or shouldn’t happen, but still.

Fair enough, but I think 2 receivers (the other being Pratt) would be enough if we also want to find a QB and/or some rushers.

Unsolved mystery
I’m not trying to hate on Momah, especially because I do think he made significant improvements from year 1 to year 2, but are there any good examples of player who were put on the practice squad for more than a year that ultimately ended up being a quality player down the road? I’m guessing there must be a couple examples, I just can’t think of any.
I didn’t think Momah was on last year’s squad. He wasn’t anywhere near good enough. This year… seems perfect for him. Why we would keep Murphy over him is a bit beyond me, unless he’s been getting some (better) offers from other teams and is waiting to make a decision, so we signed Murphy as a fallback. One can hope, anyways.
Jamaal Jackson was PS then IR’d before winning the starting Center job. Not exactly 2 years on the PS, but close.
Because Momah managed to improve so much on his own this past year, I can’t help but wanting to see how much more he can improve after a year with our coaches, practicing against NFL talent
Danny Amendola.
I’m one of the people who likes Stephen Hill as a project. I think he went to the wrong team for that (was an excellent blocker though, which is all Ryan cares about on Offense besides the run game). Seems that he has a lot of upside if only he was with an offensive-minded team.
Again, just so you know, I watched the dude as a GT fan.

Steven Hill might need to get a little more humble about learning how to prepare himself to work on an NFL level before he’s of any help to a roster. His agent’s comments yesterday were a massive red flag for me.
Now that the practice squad is just about set, do people realize what our next order of business is? Breaking down EAGLES VS? JAGS!! Game time is around the corner boys,, I’m going to need help and I have a lot to get up to speed about because I know practically know nothing about the Jags..

Where would we be today if Chip didn’t have a change of heart while Gus was chilling in the Lurie mansion? How much better or worse would we be today? How different would we be? Figure if Gus Bradley was our coach, we might not have Lane and Ertz… How different would we look if we added Ziggy Ansah to play Gus Leo role, and safety Jonathon Cyprien in round two? We would be playing a 4-3 Under instead of two gapping 3-4… Ertz and Lane wouldn’t be here, but we probably would still have Desean..,who knows what offense we would be running, and how FOles would have developed in it

I think Chip really liked the organization and players, Foles and Shady in particular. He has more freedom than at Oregon without the roadtrip recruiting BS. From what I hear, he loves Philly, the org, the players and the fans. (Still hates the media of course – a bunch of dumb A$$es.)
To me, it seems he enjoys the media. He has fun with it, and it is a joy when he puts reports in their place.
Andy Reid hated the media. He was the worst press conference to watch.

I think they could tell very quickly that Chung wasn’t good. They pushed Wolff to get him on the field ASAP.

If that wasn’t obvious when Chung’s inability to read the most basic of easy to defend passes forced me to watch a Giants Super Bowl win, I don’t know what else could have been more helpful to knowing Chung can’t play.
PFF pre season grades have both Allen and Wolff in their top 5 safeties. Not like they were playing poorly out there.
Couple of things:
Allen and Wolff (and of course Jenkins) could all end up playing fantastic. I’m just arguing the fact that just because the Eagles say they like their safeties, doesn’t guarantee anything (i.e. they liked Chung heading into the season, but obviously he was a major disappointment).
Also, while I appreciate PFF to provide some insight, PFF preseason grades, at a position like safety which is notoriously difficult to grade, really doesn’t tell me much. Teams and players are playing vanilla defenses throughout the preseason, playing against wide ranges of talents due to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team units playing at different points of the game, and we are talking about a small sample size. So while I am not trying to argue that Allen and Wolff will in fact be bad, PFF providing grades that Allen and Wolff are top 5 safeties in the preseason doesn’t really make me think they will end up one way or the other.
Don’t think fans understand how solid Malcolm will be in this scheme…Nate will have his best year, but by Midseason, you shouldn’t be able to keep Wolff off the field

Someone on the EMB just posted that according to his agent, CB Teddy Williams will be signing on to the PS. 26 year old world class sprinter (4.2-something 40) who didn’t play football in college. Has been with Dallas, Arizona, & Indy & moved between WR & CB a few times.

Greg Garber of ESPN.com wrote a definitive piece on the life and hard times of a gunner in the NFL. It dates back to 2001, but still holds true today. It’s called “The Gunner’s Gauntlet“. Here are a few excerpts:
“The gunner is the NFL’s dirty little secret, the most thankless, difficult job in a league rife with occupational hazards.”
“It’s mayhem in about four seconds,” Atlanta special teams coach Joe DeCamillis said. “You want to try to go off a double-team and blow the returner up. It takes a special kind of guy to do that.”

As a preface to anybody questioning the win @ San Fran for week 4;
– Niners D is vastly diminished due to injury, free agent defections, and suspension
– They’re, according to a few writers such as Evan Silva, planning on having Kaepernick throw a lot more this year because they’ll need to score more often to win. A read one and run guy like Kaepernick who can’t (according to Greg Cosell – who is the leading authority on NFL QB play) make NFL level reads and throw guys open on a consistent basis being asked to throw a lot is a recipe for disaster.
I don’t question the win @ SF. I DO question the losses to Indy and (ugh) Dallas. If we lose a game in the division, IMHO it would more likely be in the cold/rain at NY in December once we’ve wrapped up the division.
The Giants are going to be a 4-12 car accident of a football team and our worst football was played vs. Dallas last year. I’m still not sure how we didn’t win more easily in that final game in Dallas last year. I can’t call 6-0 in division.
Indy, especially because they’ll be able to no-huddle us all game, is going to expose where we’re still not good on D as of yet. That game could totally shake out to a 42-35 loss.
Luckily the only 3 good QBs we play all year are Luck, Wilson, and Rodgers.
I know NY will be bad, but back in the day, Chicago was good for a win vs GB regardless of talent. Could happen that they lose to Dal, but the Dal defense has not gotten better since last year and Phl should have figured out what Dal was doing last year..
We won’t lose to the colts, Niners or Seahawks…

I really I like this schedule because while it’s a difficult schedule it provides some really good tests and opportunity for growth. I like the schedule because we can get off to a good start, and then finish strong and go into the playoffs on fire since in December we will beat the Seahawks at home, and then beat our division rivals the last 3 games..

Big year!! We won 10 games last year against a crappy schedule..this year we win 12 games against a much tougher schedule… Then again, these season win totals don’t really concern me when I know we will win our division…win the division,and a playoff game and the win totals become insignificant…

I’m ok losing at Seattle in the NFC championship game.
I would be more worried about the Saints or Packers. A team with a great QB has a better shot to defeat us than the seahawks imo.
I have us as 4th in the conference behind Seattle, New Orleans, and Green Bay. I think we’d lose to any of those teams in their building.
What makes seattle so good at home, I.E. the 12th man and all that noise is kind of useless against a team that gets its plays from flash cards on the sideline.
That is certainly a part of what they do, but I think you’re underrating the talent on that D and how sneaky-effecient / good Wilson is.

I’m sticking with 10-6, but hoping for better. I really want us to beat SF and contribute to knocking them out of the playoffs. If they weather the suspension storm and make it to the playoffs near full strength, they are going to be a tough out – at home or not.
We will need a home divisional game to make it to the NFC championship game. Winning at GB, NO, or Seattle is a tall order – could happen, but I wouldn’t lay money on it now.
Doubt they can beat us in week 4…. They should really really struggle in September. Maybe they get their shit together around Midseason when they get some guys back an the replacements have some game time under their belt….but they won’t beat us in September..

I would think the team that drafted him knew he would be a project blocking and catching, and would have to teach him how to do those things…. I mean, who didn’t know he wouldn’t be able to block or catch I itially? I assumed a team that drafted him, would put him on PS and try to teach him those skills…

The want to run uptempo and run he ball on offense, but Chad Henne is not good.
The Jags DL should be good this year, but I still think our OL should dominate them, outside of the DL and Cyprien, they do not have a ton of talent so if the OL gets the job done, look for Shady, Ertz and Sproles to have a big night

Is Cyprien the player everyone expected him to be?
From what I saw Wolff played better than him last year (but Cyprien had to take the hard jump from FCS to NFL where Wolff played in a good FBS conference), but that little I watched of the Jags pre season, Cyprien looked better. He isnt Mini-Dawkins yet as some people compared him to Dawkins, but you can see the potential once his head stop swimming.
Looking back, I rather want Ertz+Wolff than Cyprien+random even tho I was a big fan of Cyprien (I still wants Travis Kelce over Ertz despite Ertz looking really good)

Main Question facing Jags is when does Bortles get to start over Henne. Defense is getting there, acquired some ‘Hawks castoffs including C. Clemens. Expected to improve this year, but 1 year away from challenging for a post-season spot.

I am hopeful that’s Chip’s culture installation gets us to something like what Belichick has established without the extreme authoritarianism (see Wes Welker’s comments) and utter lack of personality (see any press conference with Bill).

He’s a high production college player with size / speed measurables that place him in a huge group of guys that the NFL tends to eat up year in and year out.

This is why I wished the first gay player to come out would have been a Top Can’t Miss prospect… I hated that it was a fringe prospect…because even if he doesn’t deserve any spot in the NFL, you will hear activist groups cry homophobia…fringe fans who don’t know anything, see 3 sacks in the preseason will cry bloody murder when he doesn’t find a job…

If you go by just numbers 5-8 people in a locker room is gay and a lot of them are known inside the locker room (and by the FO), its just that its one of the few things that is kept inside the locker room only (together with PEDs etc.).
So no, its not because he is gay that he went 7th round (Imo he should have went UDFA) or that he has a hard time landing on a PS (undersized, non athletic players is not prime PS candidates)

What’s really a shame is, that like you said, no one really gives a shit…team mates, front offices don’t care, and I don’t think fans care either….it’s just the media that makes it a problem, I hear fans all the time tired of the stories of his sexual orientation….the media single handedly makes this an issue and tougher for gay players, yet they can’t wait to judge a franchise and make sure the gay player is treated fairly..

Like you said, gay players have always been on the NFL, and it has never been an issue…when media Bombards a guys team mates every day with questions of a team mates sexual orientation, than it becomes annoying for players
It’s not the teams, it’s ESPN. They will beat Sam’s story like a dead horse wherever he goes. Most organizations don’t want that sort of media scrutiny week after week. Seems to me that Sam does have enough NFL skills to contribute somewhere. Just maybe not enough to be worth the headache of the media trolls.
