Foles has had time to throw. The offense is just not executing as a whole. Foles has missed some throws. McCoy is dancing way to much (especially for this oline). Fumbles by Cooper and Ertz (the one by Cooper likely would not have changed anything, but still). Penalties. It has just been ugly all around.

I just don’t see what the gamble there was. Yes it is a longer field goal, but both were makeable. The downside is what we just saw.
52 yard FG is no gimme, and there’s the chance of a sack or a penalty that makes it even longer. At this point, with our offense looking historically inept, we can’t afford to go down by more than 3. It was a risk worth taking.
Dawson already made a 51 yd FG today with ease, and that was with someone getting a finger on the kick. To me, in the context of this game, the likelihood of making that FG vs the 42 yard FG was close to the same while the opportunity for them to score a TD went from 0 to a real possibility.

It wasn’t just the final drive. He again missed open receivers which this season has been a problem. He was trying to force things down field. To be fair I also want the good McCoy and starting offensive line as well. Chip not having faith to run it with 2 yard to go when the IZR is his bread and butter is terrifying and puts way to much pressure on Foles.

What call was there that you wanted him to challenge? If he challenges that Boldin catch, all he does is lose a time out that it turned out he would’ve needed at the end of the game. No issues with the way Kelly managed challenges or time outs. Playcalling, that’s another matter.

This was a bad performance by the offense and a tough loss, but seriously… how many of you looked at “@SF” on the schedule and thought “that’s a win”? This team was not going to go undefeated.
Kelly and Foles have both shown the ability to bounce back from poor performances. We have an extremely winnable game against the Rams next week, this is not the end of the world.

It’s a LOOOOOOONG season. Have been through enough Eagles seasons to know that a bad game in September does not mean squat come January.
Yep, 3-5 last year at midpoint, we have to lose sometimes, losing in SF to make us 3-1 isn’t the end of the world.
Winning games against teams like Rams, Jaguars etc are nothing special.. This team is expected to beat teams like that.. It’s teams like SF, Seahawks, Broncos etc that this team needs to win against to show they are the real deal
Agreed. But at SF, when they are 1-2 and desperate, and we are playing with a banged up, makeshift offensive line, is a tough spot. They could’ve easily won this game, so it’s disappointing they didn’t pull it out. But it’s hardly a season-defining loss, and it doesn’t mean they’ll be unable to beat the 49ers under more favorable circumstances.

He did hit couple of passes to the sidelines that is usually tough, but the issue is that Foles isn’t allowed to float the ball and throw it short. That means Foles actually has to be accurate downfield.

Other team has injuries on offensive line and don’t run it this bad 2 games in a row. Especially when you were the leading rushing team last year. Chip has to get that going.

I wonder if there’s weirdly additional pressure with the specialist. In other words, is he disinclined to speak up for fear of being wrong? The “catch” (bad pun) is that the real refs are kind of hit-or-miss with replay, so sometimes the gamble makes sense… and that’s for a head coach to decide, not a specialist.
If you’re only going to pay a guy to do a job once a week for 16 weeks, and his only goddamn job is to figure out whether to challenge a play or not, 2 things need to be true: 1 he can’t be fucking chickenshit, and 2, the head coach needs to listen to what he fucking says.

I agree something is off with his deep ball, but to me it mostly seems to be off when throwing to Maclin. And yeah it’s weird they can’t hook up when 2yrs ago they were great together.
The thing that gets me with the deep ball is that one time he over throws and the next underthrows.. either his aim is shaky with the current OL, or his mechanics are off somewhere.
This OL injury isn’t to be taken lightly. It’s fucking murdering us right now. We need our guys back. Lane Johnson I hope makes a nice difference. I said this last week . . . Chip Kelly’s been NFL-ized.
If you step back, we played a bunch of back-ups, on the road, against the NFC runner-up.
If you step forward, we missed several opportunities, and literally handed the ball over to them.
The only “takeaway” I’ve got from this is that there still isn’t enough evidence to make any sort of judgement on this team. Frustrating in its frustrating-ness.
The only backups Eagles played were Molk, Tobin n Kelly.. The weapons are still starters.. Play calling n execution the problem with this game

One thing about great running teams is they can run the ball even mixing and matching up front.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case with the 2014 Eagles.
I haven’t seen the Eagles run the ball this poorly since 1970.
True… but I think we haven’t yet had a controlled experiment (hence my frustration). In other words, we heard all off-season how an intact OL makes all the difference… I don’t think we’ve had a game where the same 5 guys played in the same spots for the whole game.
THAT SAID – yeah – McCoy looks off. I was postulating mid-game that the less-success he has, the more he presses… and the more he loses yards. I want to say it’s a positive feedback mechanism, but perhaps it’s a negative feedback thing.

As for the “intact” O-line question . . . if Chip Kelly’s running game requires the same 5 guys over 16 games every year, then that may bode well.

Anyway – yeah… from a macro perspective, it seems this form of Kelly offense doesn’t work that well without the right components. That might be common sense, but I think it’s telling from a personnel standpoint – we’d better have outstanding backup OL (and RB!!!) for this thing to work. Perhaps in Oregon – with the increased roster size – he had the luxury of plugging-and-playing when players would go down, but in the NFL (when talent differential between teams is vastly reduced), personnel > scheme.
This shouldn’t be read as an indictment of Kelly or the team (I’m still very excited about both), but simply that one adjustment might be to really “load up” on capable backups… even if that comes at the opportunity cost of, say, improving defensive talent in the off-season. I think Brent at Eagles Rewind or maybe even one of our clever cohorts in this space suggested that, historically, winning teams have been dominant on one side of the ball (versus balanced)…

The Birds’ running game — from the opening kickoff against JAX — hasn’t looked nearly as sharp as last year’s.
Credit to NFL d-coordinators. Plus injuries aren’t helping. (But McCoy w/ 20 or so carries for 30 or so yards . . . something’s far more wrong than just backup O-linemen.)
On the other hand, the passing game, especially if Foles was a just a bit more accurate and Cooper gave back the money for his hands, looks as good as ever.
The “personnel” question is looming large right now. Interesting as hell.

McCoy’s off running sideways. The few times Sproles came in he took the hole he had and made 4 yards out of it. Maybe 2 runs it was, but still, McCoy goes sideways, juke, this way that way, than bam! The lineman knocks him on his ass. Time to start running forward with the ball, Polk, Sproles, I don’t give a shit, it’s more effective when you’re trying to gain yards that isn’t 60 at a time. Jesus, takes what’s there, stop being Barry Sanders.

We get Lane back so we can slide Herresman back to RG and Kelly to LG. Hopefully Shady can run on that side now.
Our WRs are either feast or famine. We need a consistent big WR that doesn’t stink in the RZ. Luckily, Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas might test FA.
CBs need to be upgraded fast. How much longer until we see Jaylen and Boykin start on the outside? There’s still communication errors at the second level too.

I don’t think this had anything to do with teams seeing our tape or anything to do with Chip’s system at all, it was shit OL play (backups or no they were bad today), terrible QB play outside of 1 drive, no ability to run the ball, a WR who can’t catch and a coach who evidently left playcalling duties up to random button presses in Madden. I’m surprised we didn’t trot out fake punt on 4th and goal.
I agree, they took that ball right down the field at the end, trailing by 5, they did everything they could’ve done, but at the end you needed two yards, and you didn’t have the OL to do it. One bad game and you’re at the 2 yard line down by five in the last 2 minutes, not the end of the world.

I’m not saying I thought defenses have figured out Kelly.
We need to survive another few weeks without injuries to our core players. If Peters goes down before Mathis gets back then we’re really screwed. We need to get back in stride during the second half of the season and hopefully pull a 2009 Saints.
