All the Right Moves

This was not one of those years. Fans and the media didn’t like the moves at Safety. The lack of a serious move at kicker bothered many. Mark Sanchez was seen as a terrible addition. And so on.
I wrote about the offseason moves for BGN. Simply put, without the new guys the Eagles would have no shot at 3-0. To this point, it sure looks like the Eagles made a lot of good moves. Obviously time is needed before knowing how the players will fit long term, but you can get an idea of how some guys look right away.
Beyond the players the team added, the Eagles made some smart choices in who they kept around. There was a lot of discussion as to whether the team should keep Chris Polk or not. They did, despite an injured summer, and Polk looked very good as the KOR last Sunday. There was some question about whether the Eagles should deal Brandon Graham. They kept him around and he’s playing well.
The big move that everyone would love to talk about is 1st round pick Marcus Smith. I need to cover him in a post where I can look at the whole situation and provide some context. It is absolutely fair to be disappointed in him so far, but that hardly means he is a bust or bad pick. He needs time to show what he can do.

Skins vs Giants. One argument says to pull for the Skins since we already beat them.
Another argument says to pull for the 1-2 Giants since they look like less of a threat.

It’s making me wonder how bad our defense is. Or how much djax really gave them about our O and D. B/c cousins looks terrible.
Our secondary is below average and Cousins is inconsistent.
Giants DL getting a lot of pressure. I guess we weren’t able to jam or disrupt the skins receivers or maybe we just hadn’t game planned for their scheme? i don’t know.
Cousins was getting the ball out very quickly last week. There wasn’t much time for a pass rush.
yeah but why didn’t we jam receivers — isn’t that how djax was stopped last year. Feel like that’s the way to stop WCA — see superbowl?
One reason is that the Redskins were playing receivers off the line. This is what we did last year to keep DeSean from getting jammed. Also, if you miss a jam you run the risk of getting beat deep. Maybe Billy doesn’t trust these corners to jam consistently.
I’d hug this post if I could but you’ll have to settle for an upvote. If ever there were a game to jam WRs at the line it was this but instead we gave our usual big cushion to a team that lives for the dink and dunk and a QB who can’t do much else. I like Billy Davis but there are times when his decisions and game plans are infuriating.

I’m of the one-by-one philosophy. Get one team out of the way, then the next, and so on. So I’d rather get the Giants out of the way then work on the other two. I’m starting to have a bad feeling about Dallas…
Any chance of Marcus Smith spying Kaepernick on Sunday? He’s athletic enough and it’s a way to get him involved. If we can tighten our coverage even a little bit, I don’t think he can beat us with his arm because he just isn’t consistent enough.
Anyone hear Billy Davis on the WIP this morning? Very smart but I almost think too smart for his own good. “We couldn’t do X because of Y and Y wasn’t working because of Z…” – it really sounded to me like he’s trying to draw up the perfect scenario where we take away the big plays, stop the run, AND stay out of 3rd and short situations. I dunno…

Romo’s has a bad back and won’t make it through the season. The way to beat the cowboys is to get a lead, stop Murray, and have Romo throw the ball and get a few shots on him.

I can’t decide if I want Kirk Cousins to suck to disappoint the Cousins bandwagon or be awesome so the inevitable QB controversy when RG3 gets healthy is even more spectacular than it already will be.
I’m going with hoping he sucks so that the Snyders can’t trade him for some ridiculous bounty to a QB-desparate team.
Let RGIII come back. He won’t stay healthy or learn a West Coast offense.

I don’t have to hope that Cousins sucks. He’s the picture underneath the Bill Walsh aphorism about being “good enough to lose.” Cousins does, ultimately, suck. High floors can’t really disguise the excessively low ceiling.
Yeah it’s definitely a hard call.. On one hand I want them to suck and just be horrible so they have no hope and Desean and the trash in that locker room spiral out of control, on the other hand, I would love to see Cousin succeed with a supporting cast that RG3 looked like trash playing with, and see the embarrassment of RG3 losing his job and becoming a backup…

Actually, the only real fade I really recall Cooper doing right is 2012 against Dallas right before Vick was knocked out for the season. Not sure I recall Foles throwing him a fade, but I certainly can be mistaken.

I am very confused about the defenseless receiver rule. In what way was Paul defenseless there? He actually lowered his head before contact which is the only reason there was helmet to helmet at all
I agreed that he caught the ball, turned, and lowered his head. If anything they should have called helmet-to-helmet since demps lead with his helmet on the tackle, even though paul lowered his head. Defenseless made no sense there.

Chip saw the talent of Sanchez first hand when at Oregon and was extremely eager to put an eagles jersey on him. Parkey is a great addition. 7 rookies made the team,5-6 contribute on gamedays, 5 more on the PT helpin out there.
It`s been exciting since the season ended, and to be off to a 3-0 start couldn`t be better.

Kid just played his 20th game and he is already the only NT in the NFL leading his team in tackles, last two games averaging 8 tackles per game, 3 for no gain last week..all while having lateral agility to play the zone stretch run, while also having the veteran Savy to not get caught by the weakside guard so the running back can cut it back,,..

Our defensive line practically has an opportunity to win the next game for us. They are going to try and run the ball down our throat. They struggle scoring points, so they are going to need to play ball control, time o possession and keep our offense off the field if they want to have any chance of beating us.

There’s nothing wrong with him. It’s just that…no…really, he’s a second round talent, and very evidently so. And honestly, you have to pick first round talent in the first round. That’s where the players who are really going to help you out are. Tyson Alalu games are bad ideas and always have been bad ideas.
Who would you have picked? Regardless of late first early second. He still should see playing time. It’s not like late first/early second is that much difference. I don’t think ANY of the pass rusher taken before him have done much of anything.
OL, but i think we HAD to get OLB and they were nervous — hard picking at the back of the draft.
Yeh we did, I don’t think there was ANYTHING left where we picked. All the next OL to be picked were in the second and we did need some kind of pass rush. Marcus fits what we want to do. The only person I would have thought about was Dennard.
There were just two guys worth anything at that point: Kelvin Benjamin and Dominique Easley. Either Attaochu or Smith would have been available with a up move in the second.
wow could you imagine us with one hand catch kelvin making highlight plays. I think Jordan has a better brain, but Kelvin is definitely talented.
We moved up for Matthews, who is better than Benjamin. Newton literally has one “big play” person to throw to, Benjamin.
Benjamin would have ended our long franchise nightmare of Cooper as a serious number 2.
Benjamin is not trivially better than Cooper.
But we have Matthews….. He will end it.

Besides some “new to NFL” drops, the opposite argument is equally true.
I mean the last person we could have targeted in the first round was Brandon Cooks who got picked 2 spots ahead of us. We made the best move possible by trading down, picking up a pick, and still being able to draft Smith. For some reason Chip didn’t like Benjamin/more enamored with Matthews and we already have the talent on the D-line so Easly doesn’t make sense. Especially when we run a 3-4 and it is predicated on LB’s.

Heard a stat on WIP today that the 15 teams that played the week after playing chip’s eagles have gone 4-11. Probably not used to playing that many plays on either side of the ball. I guess it’s 4-12 now

I would suggest Jim’s on south street to get your cheesesteak on saturday night.
Chickies and Petes for a couple beers and Crab Fries a few hours before the game since it is right across the street.

I would suggest Prime Stache for a post game meal. I haven’t been but it’s Brent Celek’s restaurant and I know fellow commenter GermanEagle went after the Jags game and Graham, Peters, Curry, Kelce and a bunch of the other players were there and got to meet them, so I would suggest that.

Not an Eagles-related thing but you should check out the Reading Terminal Market. Amazing variety of cheeses, cured meats, sandwiches, etc. and the best pretzel you’ll ever have in your life (Fisher’s).

Tony Luke’s all the way for cheese steaks. John’s Roast Pork is great too but it’s never open.
Jim’s, Geno’s and Pat’s are all decent but overly touristy IMO.
While I disagree that Jim’s is a tourist trap, the thing is though, he is a tourist. It’s not like Pat’s or Geno’s where the quality of the sandwich isn’t up to snuff, it’s just well known and popular. Plus like Geagle mentioned, it give him a chance to go walk down south street.
Really good food at Celeks place, he also has an excellent food truck

And Jim’s is the perfect place to send him to, not only do they have elite steaks, but someone visiting philly will want to check out south street
If you really want some of the best sandwiches/cheesesteaks in the city, you have to go to John’s Roast Pork. You’ll have to go early and wait in a long line though.
Johns roast pork is an annoying location for him to get to unless he is renting a car
As for tailgating,,, don’t worry about looking for a specific section…as soon as you get to the stadium you will see a legion of eagles fans partying everywhere in the parking lot…your best bet is keep walking around, stop and meet eagles different eagles fans… We are a city of assholes… But at the eagles game it’s like the comradrie of one big family, and fans are all happy to share their tailgate food with other fans they never met….so your best bet is to just keep walking around the parking lot at the tailgate party and take it all in…

By 10am, tailgate is already packed… Your best bet is to take the subway to the game… Cost you two dollars.

Relax guys, I’ve been enjoying Tommy’s DGRs since he started them on the message boards as GE99. I’m just bustin’ his balls a bit cause I just kind of laugh, as his DGRs used to be my mandatory Monday reading with first cup of coffee…then it was Tuesday’s coffee…now it’s like, ah ok maybe I’ll read it before the weekend, lol…I still enjoy them though, sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

Eli and the Giants looked really good last night. The NfCE will probably be not that cake walk that many experts have projected at the beginning of the season. It even won’t surprise me if two teams out of the NfCE will qualify for the playoffs at the end of the day…
Yeah it’s interesting — SF could be odd man out which would be great in playoffs.

I’m not sure the point, are you ranking the 2nd tier teams here by their record to show who would get the wildcard? It’s week 4 (or 5). I like the Cardinals, 49ers, NFC W teams (pick among the non division winner, I like the Bears and Packers) more than the NFC East teams.
I forgot the south, maybe a team from there, not sure though. Anyway, how does the NFC East get two teams in? I don’t see it.
I know it’s only week 4, however I actually only said that it wouldn’t surprise me if two NFCE teams will make the playoffs.
Re the teams that I ranked above this is how I see them, in particular order. I am mostly certain that both the Seahawks and the Cardinals will make the p/o’s. That leaves one of 6 teams battling for the remaining WC spot.
Re 49ers: each year some team implodes and the Niners are the one that I believe happen to be this season’s version of last year’s Redskins…
yep ok, I guess I would be surprised given all the other teams that are (to me) better but who knows. I do hope SF implodes, especially Sunday. I like Trestman a lot and think the Bears will be there. Anyway we’ll see. I was surprised by the Giants last night.

BGN has article suggesting Smith is a better fit at ILB and could eventually take Ryans’ spot. I asked about this the other day, and GEAGLE replied but can others opine on whether his skill set could be better at ILB.

They can’t score with us, and they know it, which means they are going to try to bully us, run the ball down our throat, keep moving the chains, playing ball possession, keeping our offense off the field…. If they are able to keep running on us and moving the chains, this becomes a tough game

you beat us the same way you beat seattle. Ball control. Our D is swiss cheese so if they get a lead, then i’d just pound the ball / make short throws to move the chain.
The upside is Kaep isn’t that type of QB. They run and pass downfield which plays to our strengths on D.
I think Smith2 having another week on the inside will pay dividends. He may make a couple mistakes, but he’s light years better than Matthews/Acho. I agree we win this game, but imagine if Smith really starts to flash on the inside. I’m not expecting a monster game, but if he can spy Kaep, get a couple pressures, and lock down the RB//TE option – it’s a good game IMO.
I’m worried about Marcus.. In that I worry that we will be forced to ask him to play a crucial role, that he has no experience in, and that will be crucial to the outcome of this game…

The lone LB in our Dime defense. Because we are facing such a fast QB, I don’t know who else we can ask to play this role…and it’s crazy to ask this of Marcus, but considering 5WR sets are a big part of the Niners offense, I don’t see any other option but to throw this kid into the deep end and forcing him to swim.

If we weren’t facing such a fast QB, I’d be ok with Meco or Acho covering RBs trying to catch passes out of the backfield.But when they go 5 wide, there won’t be a running back in the game, and the lone LB in the dime will be responsible for tackling KAp if he takes off from the pocket. Meco, Mathews, Acho, do not have the speed to make the tackle. We may be forced to play Marcus in Dime which means we will be asking a rookie playing a position he never played, to have a crucial role on 3rd down… That’s worrisome.

Only other thing would be to play our normal Dime defense, when they are in 5 wide, and play Earl Wolff as the lone linebacker… The one thing working in our favor is this LB won’t have many other responsibility other than spying Kapernick and tackling him if he leaves the pocket.
I’d rather have Meco get beat than put Marcus in. Meco controls that front 7, he gets the play calls from Billy D. That whole line is young don’t think Meco’s role as QB should be underestimated.
You put Marcus in there then you have him playing a VERY important role that he’s not mentally prepared for. Barwin would almost be better just dropping into coverage there.

THE PROBLEM is what will happen when we are still in Dime but they aren’t in 5 WR sets? .I wouldn’t want Marcus in that lone LB role when they only have 4 WR on the field and Marcus would also be responsible for a running back, or TE…… If there is a way to play him as the LB when 5 WR are in the game and take him out right way when a WR sub out, then maybe we can get away with it….the problem is playing him as the DIME LB won’t guarentee that they’d put 5 WRs in the game..and if the LB has more responsibility than just spying the QB, I wouldn’t want Marcus in that role, we would be better off with our QB Meco in the game…

The one thing we can count on for sure is Kaep making a really stupid mistake that may be the deciding factor. He is a one read type of guy so if his WR isn’t open he will probably run and we have an athletic DL so we should be able to contain him.
3-4 is supposed to be built to stop the RO — CK / Azz should have lots of experience with this.

Here we go with the “all the right moves”. Yes, the Eagles upgraded a safety spot. Too bad the Eagles have 2 positions at safety and a chair would be an upgrade over the 2nd safety. I checked out the all 22 on the DJ TD. 8 defenders — 3 WR’s and 2 of them were WIDE open. People have every right to question the DC. It was stated that Foles couldn’t carry this team. That comment should have been directed at the defense, including the DC. Maybe Kendricks has something to do with it? I don’t know the answers, I only see the results….
The defense WAS questioned in the off season because of the lack of moves. Some players are young and getting better. However, not enough was done to make this unit better. I’m sure they tried. The defense is not a finished product. STILL, I don’t think Davis is doing a good job.

The kicker — maybe the Eagles had their eye on this guy the whole time. Maybe if the Colts didn’t bring him to their camp the Eagles would have had him in camp sooner. Nobody knows. Just glad a move was made.
To be fair, Wolff hasn’t played and has shown some flashes. He may be the answer at the 2nd safety spot. Carroll is getting more reps now and we have to see how Watkins comes along. These needs were addressed and they are better than last year (do you want Chung, Carmichael, or Marsh?) we have to be patient for some of the results.
I don’t disagree about Davis, but missing Kendricks and replacing him with a high schooler (Matthews or Acho) makes a difference. It seems Smith is a natural at ILB, so lets see how that pans out. Based on how they played last year, I’m willing to see how the defense plays out before I rip Davis. Hindsight is always 20/20 and Davis seems to have a handle on what he has in players.
All valid points. I’m willing to hold judgment. The benefit of 3-0 is there is room for error and trying different pieces here and there. Davis talks a good game for sure. He’s entering his second year. This D, no matter how it’s explained, has made Cousins and Henne look like pro-bowlers. Season is still young. Still plenty of time for the D to come together.
Exactly. This D was terrible at the beginning of last year and played well down the stretch sans Minny and NO. If the end of the season the D is still crappy, then yeah we have that conversation about Davis and his future.
The fact they couldn’t carry over their late season success from last year is an indictment against Davis imo. The only new guy is Jenkins, and he’s been doing fine.
Who did we play well against last year? Anyone in the playoffs, no? To be fair we were giving up 20points a game against OCs that didn’t know what to expect from us.
We don’t have a dominant OLB which is the most important player in the scheme, i think we’ll be limited.

Billy is going to build us a top defense, but it doesn’t happen overnight, especially when you build thru the draft… By the end of this year this defense will have grown leaps and bounds, to where after next offseasons additions, I expect us to go into the 2015 season being talked about as a top 10 defense…

Really consistently seeing some quality growth since Billy took over.
All but Jenkins were depth moves. Carrol, Watkins, Bair, Allen, braman, Maragos >> charmicael, Chung, sopoaga, marsh, colt Anderson, geathers.
But started 10 of 11 from 2012. Hard to expect a lot of improvement, other than defense not knowing scheme as well last year. Same bottom 10 defense with a little improvement in confidence and 4th quarter stops.
St is a whole different deal. Last year Jason Phillips and Arelius Benn were brought in but both got injured. Henery was left in place. This year Maragos and braman and Sproles are huge improvements. Huff, burton, Watkins are great rookie additions.
Parkey is awesome but that was blind luck by Howie. At least he didn’t screw it up when the opportunity came, congrats to chip and Howie to trust the UDFA based on one preseason game.
Parkey wasn’t dumb luck… Back when we were deciding which UDFA kicker to sign Fipp said it was between Parkey and murderleg, and we took murderleg like idiots..fortunately we got a do over and ended up with Parkey anyway, but my understanding is Parkey was very much on out radar after the draft
I really can’t get behind Davis. I don’t buy the overall philosophy. His defense is built to stop the run first and not give up the big play. Well, the last I checked this was a passing league. It sucks getting gashed by the run for 4 and 5 yards at a pop but I’d take that over 8-12 yard completions left and right. To put it in perspective, Adrian Peterson has been the best back since coming into the league. The Vikings have averaged 7 wins a year during that span. In 2014 you win by throwing the football.
I heard him on WIP yesterday and I’m not picking up what he’s putting down. He said we couldn’t get to Cousins because of the quick 3 step drop backs and the quick hitches. But he didn’t want to tighten the coverage at the line because that’s when you get hit over the top. Well, the Skins had 5 or 6 plays of of 20+ yards so that wasn’t working for him either.
I thought one of the reasons for bringing in Malcom Jenkins was so we could be more aggressive and versatile in the secondary? Just take some GD chances once in a while. I’ve never seen a team (and we watched the Castillo / Bowles led defense) give up so many uncontested completions. When you have a guy like Fletcher who likes to be physical, why is he playing so much off coverage? And we don’t have great pass rushers…maybe if we could disrupt the timing of the throws a little bit it would give our rushers more time to get to the QB. And isn’t that another thing Davis likes to say — the coverage and pass rush goes hand in hand?
I just can’t believe that the personnel is THAT bad. There has to be more to it than that. I think BD is afraid to be aggressive, until the 4th quarter for some reason, which is when the defense generally begins to look competent. What does Chip say to Foles, grip it and rip it? I think Billy needs to start doing the same thing. It’s like he’s trying to defend against three different things on any given play, no wonder there are so many blown assignments in the secondary.
With all that being said, I predict a coming out game for Marcus Smith. I’m not saying he’s going to look like an All-Pro but I have a feeling he’ll be integral in slowing down Kaepernick and Davis this week.
I wish i could really defend BD or the scheme, but it’s hard. I understand what he’s trying to do which is make the offense one dimensional so you get a kurt cousins like performance last night. Problem is (a) we haven’t had a lead so teams can run more against us and play the short passing games and (b) even scheming pass rush we’re really not getting much pressure – it’s almost like we prefer batted balls.
If the DL is the only good thing about your defense be a 43.

Our defense hasn’t played it’s best ball yet. And they have tons to improve on right now…but it’s not like the offense is carrying them. At the most crucial times in each of the 3 games, our defense stepped up and shut the opponent down when they needed to. It’s not like our defense is just sucking and the offense gets the ball last and wins…defense has had to make key stops at the most important time in games…

They played well against the crappy jags but the offense put them in bad positions turning the ball over, They had to come out after halftime knowing that if they didn’t get multiple stops, our offense would have no chance to get back in the game…and they tickled down and pitched a shut out the second half so your offense could go on to blow out the jags,

The colts were able to run on us, but so the fuck what. We made them waive the white flag and abandon their game which was throwing downfield because they were afraid of letting our offense get on the field and they wanted to play ball control. We never expected them to play us like that, and I’d be down to let them run for 150 yards anytime, if it meant keeping Luck under 200 yards..way more impressed with how we shut down Luck, then I am upset about them running on us..we took them out of their game…and at the end of that game, Each young stud QB had one chance to lead his team down field and score. Our defense buckled down in crunch time and sent Luck home with his tail between his legs, while our young gunslinger comes out and starts the drive with a 20 yard pass to Ertz down the sideline, surgically leafing us all the way down field setting up a Chip shot for “Goldenleg”
Colts put up 30, skins put up 30. Jags are TERRIBLE and got to 17 (not totally the D’s fault). Yes the defense has gotten stops later in the 4th quarter, but they’ve been swiss cheese all game.
Colts game could have easily gone the other way if we they just ran the ball the rest of the time. I put that on their OC. They had a game plan (run) and we couldn’t stop it. Skins had a game plan (pass) and we couldn’t stop it. We rank (again) deal last in passing yards allowed.
Passing yards isn’t a stat that concerns me. Honestly, I don’t even look at it because it’s not a fair indication of our defense since it has to be on the field longer than every one else’s… You are welcome to judge defense by whatever criteria you want..but personally, I judge them by:

1) Points… Hasn’t been good enough! This number needs to go down.
A) jags game was fine
B) Colts scored 3 points too many(not bad on the road)
C) Redskins so far was the only game we,really allowed too many points.

2) Turnover:
A) we lead the NFL in longest streak of dominating a turnover in game. 15 game turnover streak. Defense not only have been coming up with turnovers, but they have been coming up with them in crucial points that have a big hand in the outcome of these games. Malcolm and Cox been coming away with clutch turnovers…very pleased in this regard.

3) 3rd down conversion percentage. This isn’t where it needs to be yet, especially in the first half, but off the top of my head, I wouldn’t be surprised if our defense is among the league leaders in second half 3rd down conversion percentage. None of the 3 comeback wins ever happen without the defense buckling down and getting off the field on 3rd down in the second half… A lot to like about our second half percentage, but we need to improve on it in the first half, and that starts with getting teams in 3rd and long situations instead of short distance 3rd downs..
