All the Right Moves

Posted: September 25th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 236 Comments »

Every now and then the Eagles have an offseason that draws universal praise. This was not one of those years. Fans and the media didn’t like the moves at Safety. The lack of a serious move at kicker bothered many. Mark Sanchez was seen as a terrible addition. And so on.

I wrote about the offseason moves for BGN. Simply put, without the new guys the Eagles would have no shot at 3-0. To this point, it sure looks like the Eagles made a lot of good moves. Obviously time is needed before knowing how the players will fit long term, but you can get an idea of how some guys look right away.

Beyond the players the team added, the Eagles made some smart choices in who they kept around. There was a lot of discussion as to whether the team should keep Chris Polk or not. They did, despite an injured summer, and Polk looked very good as the KOR last Sunday. There was some question about whether the Eagles should deal Brandon Graham. They kept him around and he’s playing well.

The big move that everyone would love to talk about is 1st round pick Marcus Smith. I need to cover him in a post where I can look at the whole situation and provide some context. It is absolutely fair to be disappointed in him so far, but that hardly means he is a bust or bad pick. He needs time to show what he can do.

Skins vs Giants. One argument says to pull for the Skins since we already beat them.

Another argument says to pull for the 1-2 Giants since they look like less of a threat.

Thoughts?

I’m behind schedule with my DGR. I’ll be posting that a bit later this evening. Sorry for the delays. I started a new job back in February and matching my work schedule with my writing schedule hasn’t been the easiest task. I’ll get better as the season goes along.

My only hope is that this game is truly worthy of the name “Thursday Night Football”.

who to root for? neither, you just root for one team to lose in the most demoralizing way possible.

It’s making me wonder how bad our defense is. Or how much djax really gave them about our O and D. B/c cousins looks terrible.

  6. 6 mrparabolic said at 8:55 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Our secondary is below average and Cousins is inconsistent.

  7. 7 anon said at 8:59 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Giants DL getting a lot of pressure. I guess we weren’t able to jam or disrupt the skins receivers or maybe we just hadn’t game planned for their scheme? i don’t know.

  8. 8 mrparabolic said at 9:18 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Cousins was getting the ball out very quickly last week. There wasn’t much time for a pass rush.

  9. 9 anon said at 9:43 PM on September 25th, 2014:

yeah but why didn’t we jam receivers — isn’t that how djax was stopped last year. Feel like that’s the way to stop WCA — see superbowl?

  10. 10 mrparabolic said at 6:39 AM on September 26th, 2014:

One reason is that the Redskins were playing receivers off the line. This is what we did last year to keep DeSean from getting jammed. Also, if you miss a jam you run the risk of getting beat deep. Maybe Billy doesn’t trust these corners to jam consistently.

  11. 11 OldDocRoss said at 5:50 PM on September 26th, 2014:

I’d hug this post if I could but you’ll have to settle for an upvote. If ever there were a game to jam WRs at the line it was this but instead we gave our usual big cushion to a team that lives for the dink and dunk and a QB who can’t do much else. I like Billy Davis but there are times when his decisions and game plans are infuriating.

  12. 12 Anders said at 3:09 AM on September 26th, 2014:

No, we had soft coverage and when they went deep we had zero pass rush

good point, that short week is a killer

  16. 16 Dragon_Eagle said at 8:50 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Let’s root for a tie rs

  20. 20 Mike Roman said at 9:11 PM on September 25th, 2014:

I’m of the one-by-one philosophy. Get one team out of the way, then the next, and so on. So I’d rather get the Giants out of the way then work on the other two. I’m starting to have a bad feeling about Dallas…

Any chance of Marcus Smith spying Kaepernick on Sunday? He’s athletic enough and it’s a way to get him involved. If we can tighten our coverage even a little bit, I don’t think he can beat us with his arm because he just isn’t consistent enough.

Anyone hear Billy Davis on the WIP this morning? Very smart but I almost think too smart for his own good. “We couldn’t do X because of Y and Y wasn’t working because of Z…” – it really sounded to me like he’s trying to draw up the perfect scenario where we take away the big plays, stop the run, AND stay out of 3rd and short situations. I dunno…

  21. 21 GEAGLE said at 10:18 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Bad feeling about Dallas? Why? I’m sure you have met December Romo before…

  22. 22 Scott J said at 8:59 AM on September 26th, 2014:

Romo’s has a bad back and won’t make it through the season. The way to beat the cowboys is to get a lead, stop Murray, and have Romo throw the ball and get a few shots on him.

  23. 23 Dragon_Eagle said at 9:14 PM on September 25th, 2014:

I think I noticed this on Sunday, but Jay Gruden is a proud graduate of the Andrew Reid School of Challenge Flags and Clock Management. Go Jay!

  24. 24 SteveH said at 9:25 PM on September 25th, 2014:

I can’t decide if I want Kirk Cousins to suck to disappoint the Cousins bandwagon or be awesome so the inevitable QB controversy when RG3 gets healthy is even more spectacular than it already will be.

  25. 25 Dragon_Eagle said at 9:29 PM on September 25th, 2014:

I’m going with hoping he sucks so that the Snyders can’t trade him for some ridiculous bounty to a QB-desparate team.

Let RGIII come back. He won’t stay healthy or learn a West Coast offense.

  26. 26 SteveH said at 9:33 PM on September 25th, 2014:

    Probably this.

  27. 27 shah8 said at 9:42 PM on September 25th, 2014:

I don’t have to hope that Cousins sucks. He’s the picture underneath the Bill Walsh aphorism about being “good enough to lose.” Cousins does, ultimately, suck. High floors can’t really disguise the excessively low ceiling.

  28. 28 GEAGLE said at 10:05 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Yeah it’s definitely a hard call.. On one hand I want them to suck and just be horrible so they have no hope and Desean and the trash in that locker room spiral out of control, on the other hand, I would love to see Cousin succeed with a supporting cast that RG3 looked like trash playing with, and see the embarrassment of RG3 losing his job and becoming a backup…

Hard call, guess the compromise is to see them completely suck with both Cousin and RG3 with Cousin being the lessor of two evils

  29. 29 anon said at 10:46 PM on September 25th, 2014:

It worked cousins is playing terrible. Just like last year. one great game then terrible after that. Now gotta hope his confidence isn’t totally blown.

Life is good when either option is grand.

  31. 31 xeynon said at 8:30 AM on September 26th, 2014:

Cousins is a poor man’s Andy Dalton. And the original Andy Dalton probably isn’t good enough to win with.

  32. 32 shah8 said at 9:37 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Jaysus! Donnell is really playing out of his mind, and that last TD is something that Riley Cooper hardly seems to be able to do!

  33. 33 SteveH said at 9:38 PM on September 25th, 2014:

2013 Riley Cooper might have, 2014 Riley Cooper would probably trip over the goal line.

  34. 34 shah8 said at 9:39 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Actually, the only real fade I really recall Cooper doing right is 2012 against Dallas right before Vick was knocked out for the season. Not sure I recall Foles throwing him a fade, but I certainly can be mistaken.

  35. 35 SteveH said at 9:37 PM on September 25th, 2014:

So much for that #1 ranked Skins defense. The dangers of small sample sizes.

  36. 36 SteveH said at 9:49 PM on September 25th, 2014:

I am very confused about the defenseless receiver rule. In what way was Paul defenseless there? He actually lowered his head before contact which is the only reason there was helmet to helmet at all

  37. 37 Chris said at 11:42 AM on September 26th, 2014:

I agreed that he caught the ball, turned, and lowered his head. If anything they should have called helmet-to-helmet since demps lead with his helmet on the tackle, even though paul lowered his head. Defenseless made no sense there.

  38. 38 teltschikfakeout88 said at 9:50 PM on September 25th, 2014:

as far as the offseason and the draft,i think it was a big success.
Chip saw the talent of Sanchez first hand when at Oregon and was extremely eager to put an eagles jersey on him. Parkey is a great addition. 7 rookies made the team,5-6 contribute on gamedays, 5 more on the PT helpin out there.
It`s been exciting since the season ended, and to be off to a 3-0 start couldn`t be better.

  50. 50 GEAGLE said at 10:02 PM on September 25th, 2014:

IMO the argument to root against the Giants is to not let them gain momentum after Sundays win since we play them in two weeks.

Argument to root against the skins, they are dirty cheap scumbag pieces of crap..

But I agree with point 1.

  52. 52 GEAGLE said at 10:16 PM on September 25th, 2014:

I’m sure most of the impatient dopes calling Marcus a bust were the same dopes that wanted to replace Bennie Logan because a rookie NT wasn’t dominant in his first play off game against all pro interior linemen,,
    ,,,
All summer, all the crap that people spewed about needing to replace Bennie Logan, and he is taking some tremendous strides in year two development. The Kid is playing like a FORCE. Hopefully the fan base gives that kid the respect he is earning…

Of course I took a peak at other comment sections today and I see people complaining about Logan! and how he should be moved to DE…SMH

Kid just played his 20th game and he is already the only NT in the NFL leading his team in tackles, last two games averaging 8 tackles per game, 3 for no gain last week..all while having lateral agility to play the zone stretch run, while also having the veteran Savy to not get caught by the weakside guard so the running back can cut it back,,..
    ….
Cox is turning into a playmaker, and Bennie is playing at a scary level for it only being the beginning of his second year…
    ….
Our defensive line practically has an opportunity to win the next game for us. They are going to try and run the ball down our throat. They struggle scoring points, so they are going to need to play ball control, time o possession and keep our offense off the field if they want to have any chance of beating us.
    ..
If our DL steps up, shuts this run down, doesn’t allow the Niners offense to keep moving the chains, the Niners won’t be able to score enough points to win..
    ..
Tremendous opportunity for the defensive line and front 7 this week…they are going to step up, answer the bell and win us this game! Niners won’t average more than 3 yards a carry against us!!!

  53. 53 eagleyankfan said at 10:35 AM on September 26th, 2014:

Good stuff re: Cox n Logan…Think they can put pressure on the QB this week? Should be a great game. DL doesn’t scare me — it’s Crabtree and the TE. DC Davis should have Nate blitz on everything single play. At least he’ll be doing something. (I’m only half kidding with that).

  54. 54 GEAGLE said at 4:52 PM on September 26th, 2014:

We need to get QBs in 3rd and 6 or longer so he has to drop back and go thru a couple reads to have time to pressure him. If we give kAp a bunch of 3rd and 3’s, we won’t get much pressure on him…

Rather than Sack him, I would just mush rush him, keep him in the pocket, get our hands up in his throwing lanes, and force him to rush throws from a messy pocket. Bet anything he can’t handle that and will throw a few picks..especially if our offense is putting pressure on Kapernick by forcing him to keep up with our scoring…

  55. 55 GEAGLE said at 10:19 PM on September 25th, 2014:

  70. 70 shah8 said at 10:55 PM on September 25th, 2014:

But we got a brand new second round talent!

  71. 71 Mitchell said at 11:05 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Yeh, something is going on with Smith. I refuse to call him a bad draft pick at this juncture but I would love to see what he can do on the field.

  72. 72 shah8 said at 11:08 PM on September 25th, 2014:

There’s nothing wrong with him. It’s just that…no…really, he’s a second round talent, and very evidently so. And honestly, you have to pick first round talent in the first round. That’s where the players who are really going to help you out are. Tyson Alalu games are bad ideas and always have been bad ideas.

  73. 73 Mitchell said at 11:10 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Who would you have picked? Regardless of late first early second. He still should see playing time. It’s not like late first/early second is that much difference. I don’t think ANY of the pass rusher taken before him have done much of anything.

  74. 74 anon said at 11:11 PM on September 25th, 2014:

OL, but i think we HAD to get OLB and they were nervous — hard picking at the back of the draft.

  75. 75 Mitchell said at 11:13 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Yeh we did, I don’t think there was ANYTHING left where we picked. All the next OL to be picked were in the second and we did need some kind of pass rush. Marcus fits what we want to do. The only person I would have thought about was Dennard.

  76. 76 shah8 said at 11:13 PM on September 25th, 2014:

There were just two guys worth anything at that point: Kelvin Benjamin and Dominique Easley. Either Attaochu or Smith would have been available with a up move in the second.

  77. 77 anon said at 11:14 PM on September 25th, 2014:

  78. 78 Mitchell said at 11:14 PM on September 25th, 2014:

We moved up for Matthews, who is better than Benjamin. Newton literally has one “big play” person to throw to, Benjamin.

  79. 79 shah8 said at 11:15 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Benjamin would have ended our long franchise nightmare of Cooper as a serious number 2.

  80. 80 shah8 said at 11:15 PM on September 25th, 2014:

Benjamin is not trivially better than Cooper.

  81. 81 Mitchell said at 11:15 PM on September 25th, 2014:

But we have Matthews….. He will end it.

  82. 82 anon said at 11:51 PM on September 25th, 2014:

  83. 83 Mitchell said at 12:07 AM on September 26th, 2014:

Besides some “new to NFL” drops, the opposite argument is equally true.

  84. 84 Mitchell said at 11:18 PM on September 25th, 2014:

I mean the last person we could have targeted in the first round was Brandon Cooks who got picked 2 spots ahead of us. We made the best move possible by trading down, picking up a pick, and still being able to draft Smith. For some reason Chip didn’t like Benjamin/more enamored with Matthews and we already have the talent on the D-line so Easly doesn’t make sense. Especially when we run a 3-4 and it is predicated on LB’s.

though I’ve never commented here before I’ve been following every
discussion here for the last three years. The day just isn’t the same

The foremost reason I am writing this
is that next Sunday my longheld dream of experiencing our beloved
Eagles live in Philly will finally happen! I am so looking forward to
it and would like to experience everything! So I would be very
grateful if you have any advice and/or tips to make this slam-dunk!

I would suggest Prime Stache for a post game meal. I haven’t been but it’s Brent Celek’s restaurant and I know fellow commenter GermanEagle went after the Jags game and Graham, Peters, Curry, Kelce and a bunch of the other players were there and got to meet them, so I would suggest that.

The living legend, Ray Didinger, helped in compiling this list.

I used to be a big fan of Jim’s but when I took an out of town friend there a couple years ago, the meat was dry and tasteless. I was thoroughly embarrassed that it was her first introduction to a philly cheesesteak.

I forgot the south, maybe a team from there, not sure though. Anyway, how does the NFC East get two teams in? I don’t see it.

Re 49ers: each year some team implodes and the Niners are the one that I believe happen to be this season’s version of last year’s Redskins…

…He is playing ILB out of necessity, and we are dumbing down the position for him… He isn’t flying around making tackles like an ILB..we are either asking him to blitz the A gap, or cover a certain tight end… That doesn’t exactly make you an ILB…..

    A) OLB is much more valuable than ILB..
    ..
    B) I see NOTHING That suggests he can become a quality ILB, but not an OLB. think he is much more suited to play OLB Longterm..
    ….
Technically he is playing ILB right now… But blitzing the A gap, and covering a TE doesn’t exactly make you an ILB

  180. 180 GEAGLE said at 9:44 AM on September 26th, 2014:

If you really wanted To make him a ILB, 6’3 250lb Marcus would be more of a thumper… Just because he is fast and athletic, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a thumper… The kid is bigger than Meco
    ..
Surprised Dan K wrote that.., usually I respect his football brain…

This I don’t understand… It’s like, people think every NFL scout an organization was wrong projecting him to be an OLB instead of an ILB?
Doubt it! No, I don’t think Dan has some keen eye to see he can be a good ILB, when no NFL front office people saw it..

I’m not saying he can’t play ILB… But he is definitely more suited for OLB, and if you are going to give him time to grow into an ILB, might as well give him time to grow into OLB, since it’s much more valuable than ILB

so re: SF, how do we attack them? I don’t know much. Where is their D weak?

On D, I’m afraid Kaep will run for 250 yards like he did against GB in that playoff game.

this is still like a lotto ticket game to me, I have low expectations. We pull this win out and go 4-0, that’s something. SF really needs this game.

  184. 184 GEAGLE said at 9:56 AM on September 26th, 2014:

Not losing this game,, our front 7 will step up and win it for us..
    .,.
Question: why do you think he will run wild on us, but not the other teams he plays on a weekly basis?
    ..
This game is very simple! They can’t score with us, and they know it, which means they are going to try to bully us, run the ball down our throat, keep moving the chains, playing ball possession, keeping our offense off the field…. If they are able to keep running on us and moving the chains, this becomes a tough game
    ,,,
But if our front 7 steps up and holds them to 3’yards per carry like they did to Alfred, gets them off the field on 3rd down the Niners won’t be able to out score us….their secondary isn’t going to be able to slow down our scoring attack.

DL has a huge opportunity to step up and win this game for us, Shut down this run game, mush rush Kapernick! keeping him in the pocket get our hands up in the throwing lanes and force him to out play FOles from the pocket which he can’t do…

If our DL can have a really strong first half, allowing our offense to put points on the board and make the Niners play from behind, the game is ours.
    ,,,
Like Eli, you don’t want to sack kAp… You want to pressure him to rush throws and force the ball out of his hands, because he will throw Interceptions.. If our DL can be stout in first half, let our offense get a lead, playing from behind, is going to cause Kapernick to force throws and turn the ball over…

huge opportunity and test for our front 7 this week

  185. 185 anon said at 10:25 AM on September 26th, 2014:

you beat us the same way you beat seattle. Ball control. Our D is swiss cheese so if they get a lead, then i’d just pound the ball / make short throws to move the chain.

The upside is Kaep isn’t that type of QB. They run and pass downfield which plays to our strengths on D.

  186. 186 Avery Greene said at 11:11 AM on September 26th, 2014:

I think Smith2 having another week on the inside will pay dividends. He may make a couple mistakes, but he’s light years better than Matthews/Acho. I agree we win this game, but imagine if Smith really starts to flash on the inside. I’m not expecting a monster game, but if he can spy Kaep, get a couple pressures, and lock down the RB//TE option – it’s a good game IMO.

  187. 187 GEAGLE said at 5:41 PM on September 26th, 2014:

I’m worried about Marcus.. In that I worry that we will be forced to ask him to play a crucial role, that he has no experience in, and that will be crucial to the outcome of this game…
    ..
The lone LB in our Dime defense. Because we are facing such a fast QB, I don’t know who else we can ask to play this role…and it’s crazy to ask this of Marcus, but considering 5WR sets are a big part of the Niners offense, I don’t see any other option but to throw this kid into the deep end and forcing him to swim.
    ..
If we weren’t facing such a fast QB, I’d be ok with Meco or Acho covering RBs trying to catch passes out of the backfield. But when they go 5 wide, there won’t be a running back in the game, and the lone LB in the dime will be responsible for tackling KAp if he takes off from the pocket. Meco, Mathews, Acho, do not have the speed to make the tackle. We may be forced to play Marcus in Dime which means we will be asking a rookie playing a position he never played, to have a crucial role on 3rd down… That’s worrisome.

Dime defense against Kapernick and 5WRs is when we will miss Kendrick the worst… It’s really really not fair to ask this of Marcus, and we could end up putting this kid in a position to be blamed for this loss… Some rookies won’t recover from that….I hate to be the coaches and having to make this call.. I just don’t know that you can afford to play anyone else in that spot besides Marcus..

Only other thing would be to play our normal Dime defense, when they are in 5 wide, and play Earl Wolff as the lone linebacker… The one thing working in our favor is this LB won’t have many other responsibility other than spying Kapernick and tackling him if he leaves the pocket.

  188. 188 anon said at 6:25 PM on September 26th, 2014:

I’d rather have Meco get beat than put Marcus in. Meco controls that front 7, he gets the play calls from Billy D. That whole line is young don’t think Meco’s role as QB should be underestimated.

You put Marcus in there then you have him playing a VERY important role that he’s not mentally prepared for. Barwin would almost be better just dropping into coverage there.

I don’t disagree… This is a head scratched that I’m curious to see how we play it….

Marcus would be much better than Demeco in Dime when all he has to worry about is spying Kapernick and chasing him down If he leaves the pocket, which is what would happen when they are in 5WR sets…thats a lot of responsibility to give the kid, but I don’t think we have any other LBs fast enough to catch Kapernick..
    ..
THE PROBLEM is what will happen when we are still in Dime but they aren’t in 5 WR sets? .I wouldn’t want Marcus in that lone LB role when they only have 4 WR on the field and Marcus would also be responsible for a running back, or TE…… If there is a way to play him as the LB when 5 WR are in the game and take him out right way when a WR sub out, then maybe we can get away with it….the problem is playing him as the DIME LB won’t guarentee that they’d put 5 WRs in the game..and if the LB has more responsibility than just spying the QB, I wouldn’t want Marcus in that role, we would be better off with our QB Meco in the game…
    ….
But when they have 5 WRs and an empty backfield, you KNOW a big part of that play is Kapernick taking off when our defense turns his back to him to cover all those WRs,,

NOTE to defense…if we have to give up yards to 5 WR sets, let Stevie Johnson get the yards lol

    ….
I hate to say it, but it doesn’t look good for Wolffs future here. Kid has elite athleticism to become as great as he wants to be.. He easily has the ability to grow into a Bob sanders type… But mentally, he doesn’t seem to be there…

I loved what I saw from him last year…. I hate that I don’t see much of a difference in his game now, compared to last year. Year 2 in the same system, he should be showing more growth than we are seeing…IF he can’t elevate his game by Midseason, it will be a really bad sign…

Just look at the other year two players:
    ..
    Ertz is noticeably better
Bennie Logan is playing close to a pro bowl NT level these past few,weeks..

Wolff has all the talent, athleticism to have a really high ceiling… Mental aspect of the game is what will decide how much of that potential he will realize, and I’m not seeing any good signs that he is moving in the right direction.
    ,,
When he plays, it’s not that he plays bad, but I don’t see much difference between how he is playing this year and how he played last year, and that’s a big problem!

Even worse then his development, I can assure you if he keeps refusing to play when the coaches think he is healthy enough to go, he won’t be in this city much longer.. I wouldn’t worry so much about him, if he didn’t have so much damn talent… But we are still waiting for everything to slow down and click for the kid.. If his football brain ever catches up to his physical ability, we will have a heckuva safety… But we should be seeing signs of that this year, and if it doesn’t click for him by November/December, it won’t be a good sign..

Even worse, we keep dealing with his knee issue, but he never tore any ligaments, broke any bones, or had any type of serious reconstructive surgery, so why the hell are we having all these knee issues with the kid for two seasons now?

Really starting to worry that he is going to waste a ton of safety potential…

Skins again? Is the fan base threatening T-Law they will leave if he says the curse word “Redskins”? Egads.
Here we go with the “all the right moves”. Yes, the Eagles upgraded a safety spot. Too bad the Eagles have 2 positions at safety and a chair would be an upgrade over the 2nd safety. I checked out the all 22 on the DJ TD. 8 defenders — 3 WR’s and 2 of them were WIDE open. People have every right to question the DC. It was stated that Foles couldn’t carry this team. That comment should have been directed at the defense, including the DC. Maybe Kendricks has something to do with it? I don’t know the answers, I only see the results….
The defense WAS questioned in the off season because of the lack of moves. Some players are young and getting better. However, not enough was done to make this unit better. I’m sure they tried. The defense is not a finished product. STILL, I don’t think Davis is doing a good job.
    …….
They “Kept” Graham? Do we know for a fact they didn’t try to trade him? What exactly has Sanchez accomplished?
    …….
    Jenkins is king!
    …….
The kicker — maybe the Eagles had their eye on this guy the whole time. Maybe if the Colts didn’t bring him to their camp the Eagles would have had him in camp sooner. Nobody knows. Just glad a move was made.

  202. 202 Avery Greene said at 10:37 AM on September 26th, 2014:

To be fair, Wolff hasn’t played and has shown some flashes. He may be the answer at the 2nd safety spot. Carroll is getting more reps now and we have to see how Watkins comes along. These needs were addressed and they are better than last year (do you want Chung, Carmichael, or Marsh?) we have to be patient for some of the results.
I don’t disagree about Davis, but missing Kendricks and replacing him with a high schooler (Matthews or Acho) makes a difference. It seems Smith is a natural at ILB, so lets see how that pans out. Based on how they played last year, I’m willing to see how the defense plays out before I rip Davis. Hindsight is always 20/20 and Davis seems to have a handle on what he has in players.

  203. 203 eagleyankfan said at 11:00 AM on September 26th, 2014:

All valid points. I’m willing to hold judgment. The benefit of 3-0 is there is room for error and trying different pieces here and there. Davis talks a good game for sure. He’s entering his second year. This D, no matter how it’s explained, has made Cousins and Henne look like pro-bowlers. Season is still young. Still plenty of time for the D to come together.

But started 10 of 11 from 2012. Hard to expect a lot of improvement, other than defense not knowing scheme as well last year. Same bottom 10 defense with a little improvement in confidence and 4th quarter stops.

St is a whole different deal. Last year Jason Phillips and Arelius Benn were brought in but both got injured. Henery was left in place. This year Maragos and braman and Sproles are huge improvements. Huff, burton, Watkins are great rookie additions.

  210. 210 Mike Roman said at 3:08 PM on September 26th, 2014:

I really can’t get behind Davis. I don’t buy the overall philosophy. His defense is built to stop the run first and not give up the big play. Well, the last I checked this was a passing league. It sucks getting gashed by the run for 4 and 5 yards at a pop but I’d take that over 8-12 yard completions left and right. To put it in perspective, Adrian Peterson has been the best back since coming into the league. The Vikings have averaged 7 wins a year during that span. In 2014 you win by throwing the football.

I heard him on WIP yesterday and I’m not picking up what he’s putting down. He said we couldn’t get to Cousins because of the quick 3 step drop backs and the quick hitches. But he didn’t want to tighten the coverage at the line because that’s when you get hit over the top. Well, the Skins had 5 or 6 plays of of 20+ yards so that wasn’t working for him either.

I thought one of the reasons for bringing in Malcom Jenkins was so we could be more aggressive and versatile in the secondary? Just take some GD chances once in a while. I’ve never seen a team (and we watched the Castillo / Bowles led defense) give up so many uncontested completions. When you have a guy like Fletcher who likes to be physical, why is he playing so much off coverage? And we don’t have great pass rushers…maybe if we could disrupt the timing of the throws a little bit it would give our rushers more time to get to the QB. And isn’t that another thing Davis likes to say — the coverage and pass rush goes hand in hand?

I just can’t believe that the personnel is THAT bad. There has to be more to it than that. I think BD is afraid to be aggressive, until the 4th quarter for some reason, which is when the defense generally begins to look competent. What does Chip say to Foles, grip it and rip it? I think Billy needs to start doing the same thing. It’s like he’s trying to defend against three different things on any given play, no wonder there are so many blown assignments in the secondary.

With all that being said, I predict a coming out game for Marcus Smith. I’m not saying he’s going to look like an All-Pro but I have a feeling he’ll be integral in slowing down Kaepernick and Davis this week.

  211. 211 anon said at 4:26 PM on September 26th, 2014:

I wish i could really defend BD or the scheme, but it’s hard. I understand what he’s trying to do which is make the offense one dimensional so you get a kurt cousins like performance last night. Problem is (a) we haven’t had a lead so teams can run more against us and play the short passing games and (b) even scheming pass rush we’re really not getting much pressure – it’s almost like we prefer batted balls.

If the DL is the only good thing about your defense be a 43.

  214. 214 GEAGLE said at 6:24 PM on September 26th, 2014:

Not really…first of all, the defense is FOCKED in today’s NFL. It is not easy to play defense today with all the crap the NFL has stacked up in the offenses favor.

Holding teams to 20 points Today is friggin hard! It’s even harder when your offense scores so fast or goes 3 and out and opponents get a bunch of extra possessions.,…
    ….
Our defense hasn’t played it’s best ball yet. And they have tons to improve on right now…but it’s not like the offense is carrying them. At the most crucial times in each of the 3 games, our defense stepped up and shut the opponent down when they needed to. It’s not like our defense is just sucking and the offense gets the ball last and wins…defense has had to make key stops at the most important time in games…

They played well against the crappy jags but the offense put them in bad positions turning the ball over, They had to come out after halftime knowing that if they didn’t get multiple stops, our offense would have no chance to get back in the game…and they tickled down and pitched a shut out the second half so your offense could go on to blow out the jags,
    ,,
The colts were able to run on us, but so the fuck what. We made them waive the white flag and abandon their game which was throwing downfield because they were afraid of letting our offense get on the field and they wanted to play ball control. We never expected them to play us like that, and I’d be down to let them run for 150 yards anytime, if it meant keeping Luck under 200 yards..way more impressed with how we shut down Luck, then I am upset about them running on us..we took them out of their game…and at the end of that game, Each young stud QB had one chance to lead his team down field and score. Our defense buckled down in crunch time and sent Luck home with his tail between his legs, while our young gunslinger comes out and starts the drive with a 20 yard pass to Ertz down the sideline, surgically leafing us all the way down field setting up a Chip shot for “Goldenleg”

Colts game could have easily gone the other way if we they just ran the ball the rest of the time. I put that on their OC. They had a game plan (run) and we couldn’t stop it. Skins had a game plan (pass) and we couldn’t stop it. We rank (again) deal last in passing yards allowed.

  216. 216 GEAGLE said at 7:33 PM on September 26th, 2014:

Passing yards isn’t a stat that concerns me. Honestly, I don’t even look at it because it’s not a fair indication of our defense since it has to be on the field longer than every one else’s… You are welcome to judge defense by whatever criteria you want..but personally, I judge them by:
    ..
    1) Points… Hasn’t been good enough! This number needs to go down.
    A) jags game was fine
    B) Colts scored 3 points too many(not bad on the road)
    C) Redskins so far was the only game we,really allowed too many points.

    2) Turnover:
    A) we lead the NFL in longest streak of dominating a turnover in game. 15 game turnover streak. Defense not only have been coming up with turnovers, but they have been coming up with them in crucial points that have a big hand in the outcome of these games. Malcolm and Cox been coming away with clutch turnovers…very pleased in this regard.

    3) 3rd down conversion percentage. This isn’t where it needs to be yet, especially in the first half, but off the top of my head, I wouldn’t be surprised if our defense is among the league leaders in second half 3rd down conversion percentage. None of the 3 comeback wins ever happen without the defense buckling down and getting off the field on 3rd down in the second half… A lot to like about our second half percentage, but we need to improve on it in the first half, and that starts with getting teams in 3rd and long situations instead of short distance 3rd downs..
    ….
We are seeing defensive improvement already, but we still have a ways to go..I’d bet that we are happy with the growth of this defense in December

This weekend we will have to put our silly cornerback debate on hold because it really doesn’t matter this week. recently the Niners are going a lot of 5 WR looks. Anquan BOldin was talking about how teams don’t have 5 cornerbacks that can match up with their 5 WRs….so we are really going to need all our CBs this week, and our dime defense is going to have to be Sharp this week, and we will probably see Jenkins match up with the 5th WR…

I think we miss Kendrick the most when we want to go dime. Meco isn’t fast enough to be the only LB in dime, that has to be responsible for kAp taking off from the pocket… Hate to thrust Marcus smith in this role, but we might not have a choice. Casey Mathews will never catch Kapernick and I don’t expect Acho to do much better… We maybe forced to throw Marcus smith right into the deep end and force him to swim……
    ..
Niners attack is interesting.. It’s like two polar opposites. They either want to go smash mouth football, or spread you out and match up against their 5 WRs..

Niners know they have to keep the ball away from our offense or they won’t be able to our score us…. Tremendous opportunity for some serious glory for our young DL.. If we can shut down their run, not allow them to keep moving the chains and keeping our offense off the field, we will win this game…defensive line has to be one of our MVPs this week…

Yeah they last their minds last week and only gave Gore 6’carries, so you can count on them to make sure they run the ball this week…if we can keep them in check the way we did to Alfred Morris we can win this game..
    ..
I don’t even want to sack Kapernick…I would mush rush him and just keep him in the pocket, get our hands up in his throwing Lanes… if we can force kAp to have to throw from a messy pocket, we will get an interception or two…ESPECIALLY
If FOles puts pressure on him by putting up points and forcing kapemick to keep up.
    ..
Don’t think one phase of the game can win it for us this week.
We will need FOles and the offense to put up points because niners been really struggling to score, so it would put a ton of pressure on KAp to keep up…and instead of trying to sack him and try to use a spy, I would just turn down the pass rush and mush rush him, keeping him in the pocket. If he has to play from behind and throw the ball from an easy pocket up get back in the game, I guarantee he will turn the ball over..he isn’t developed enough as. Pocket passer to be able up lead a comeback from the pocket… If we let him out the pocket and start making plays with his legs, then we have a problem…
    ..
So forget the pass rush…so e QBs Ike DL. You don’t even want to sack, because when you force them to throw from the pocket under pressure, they always gift you an interception or two,..

    Key to the game:
1)’consistently score points..don’t have big quarter long scoring droughts. We need to score to put pressure on their struggling offense, make them play from behind all game, they will crack from the pressure.
    ..
2)’Front 7 has to gave a monster game, hold the, to 3yars per carry the way they did with Alfred Morris. Don’t allow them to kill the clock no pick up first downs..

3)’Once we get the lead and they have to play from behind, it will be crucial that our Dime defense holds up and not let them back in the game. We are going to need all 4 of our corners to have a solid game, we may even need Jaylen Watkins to play some minutes.. Our LBmcant allow Kapernick to run when we are in Dime.. This is when we miss Kendrick the most

One of the most important positions in this game will be the lone linebacker in our Dime defense. This is a crucial element of this match up because of the Niners 5 WR looks..

Mykal Kendrick is our Dime linebacker. I adore Demeco Ryan and still think he is more valuable than he gets credit for, but he isn’t fast enough to play the LB in Dime, especially against such a fast QB like KAp.
    ..
Not having Kendricks in Dime, will probably be the time we miss Kendrick the most..even worse Najee is injured. Meco, Mathews and Acho don’t have the speed to spy Kapernick when they go 5WR, and chase him down when he decides to run…

Mathews and Acho are much better suited to replace Demeco. Najee was Kendrick backup…now we are without our fastest two LBs… THATS why we are forced to look at Marcus Smith…we are Severly lacking in the linebacker speed and athleticism department…

How are we going to defende, the Niners 5 WR attack? Any other options beside Dime? And if we play dime, who are we going to play at LB?.. Anyone see any better options than making a rookie OLB responsible for spying Kapernick on 3rd down? could we throw Wolff at Dime LB?

The problem with Wolff at that position is that Wolff can easily get away with being the LB when they go 5 WR, because all that LB would be responsible for spying Kapernick?mBut what happens when we are in Dime, with Wolff at LB and they bring a RB or TE in the game and take one of the 5 WRs out?

5 wr set, Jenkins and Allen, Caroll, Boykin, fletch, Williams are going to have to man up, Meco will do his best. Dime maybe.

If 9ers sub in RB or TE eagles sub in LB.

That is the Dime defense… Meco replacing Kendrick as the lone LB in our Dime is probably when we will miss Kendrick the most…. When all our DBs have their backs to Kapernick because they are busy defending WRs. Kapernick can take off, and I doubt Meco can catch him

Not sure eagles need a spy. Dline can play disciplined.

    We don’t need a spy…

But when they have 5 WRs on the field, KAp becomes their run game, and when we have our dime against their 5WRs, that LB has to tackle Kapernick if he takes off….. In that case, I would like to see Marcus or Wolff as the LB in our Dime, the problem is I don’t want them as the LB in our dime when they don’t have 5 WR on the field…we would have to be able to Take Marcus out of the game when they go with 4 WRs,

Hooray for Chip and the Eagles! http://www.si.com/nfl/2014/09/26/devon-still-daughter-gifts-chip-kelly-eagles
I should mention especially yay to the Bengals for doing what they did!

I bet Jim Harbaugh hates Chip lol…. Probably talking shit about Chip all week to his players and coaches…going to be fascinating to see the chess match between the two coaches with unfinished PAC 12 history

That team pulled itself out of a 1-2 start last season, getting it’s season back on track… They have taken a lot of losses since then and have dealt with a lot of distractions. I don’t believe they can beat us…

Would LOVE to see Chip Kelly as the coach who sends the Niners era into a nose dive! If we can give this team an embarrassing loss, it could be the straw that broke the camels back, Harbaugh loses locker room, and they implode…

Lol beat them bad enough this week, and you might not have to face them in the playoffs…. If they can stay a float, whether the storm. They could be a problem in the playoffs when their guys get healthy… The Niners got over the hump and became a great team by beating us…. Wouldn’t mind a Chicago bears game type blow out to send that team spiraling out of control

Vaccarro is such an idiot, he says he “wants to make the cowboys pay for passing on him in the draft”…. WTF? You should be sending jerry jones a gift basket thanking him for not drafting you
