Random Sunday Night Thoughts
Posted: September 21st, 2014 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 241 Comments »The Eagles sit at 3-0, one of just 3 teams that can say that. I’m assuming the Panthers will lose since they now trail the Steelers 23-6 and their offense has really struggled. The other 3-0 teams…Cincy and Arizona. The Bengals look like a Super Bowl team right now. They are playing stifling defense and blowing people out. The Cards are winning ugly, behind backup QB Drew Stanton. The Eagles look better than the Cardinals, but not as good as the Bengals to this point.
The 3-0 record is nice, but doesn’t tell us a thing. The 2004 team started 7-0 and went to the Super Bowl. The 1993 Eagles started 4-0 and finished 8-8, missing the playoffs. The 1992 team started 4-0 and finished 11-5, a wildcard team.
* Remember when the Eagles couldn’t win at home? The Linc is back to being a fun place to watch football. The Eagles are 2-0 at home this year and won their final 4 regular season games at The Linc last year. The Eagles lost their first 4 home games in 2013. The 2012 team lost everywhere.
* The Eagles did not give up a sack today, despite the makeshift OL. Nick Foles did take a beating, but still had time to throw for 325 yards and help the team score 37 points. I couldn’t help but think back to the Osi Game from 2007. Winston Justice had to start at LT and the Eagles were without Brian Westbrook. Andy Reid came up with an awful game plan that had the team passing 2 times for every run play. Donovan McNabb was sacked 12 times and the Eagles only scored 3 points.
This offense has a lot more talent than that group, but maintaining some sense of balance, even when the run game isn’t working, is important. Chip Kelly also mixed short, quick throws with downfield plays. He helped the OL out as much as he could. His “Equal Opportunity Offense” really does keep defenses off balance. Brilliant guy.
* The Niners lost today to fall to 1-2. That team has some issues. I did not anticipate the Eagles being 2 games up on them when the team met. The Eagles travel out to SF to play them on Sunday.
* Another game with 30 points for the Eagles. They had 3 straight 30-point games late last year. They also did that in 2010. If they can put up 30 next week, that will be pretty impressive. I went all the way back to 1990 looking for the last time the Eagles scored 30 or more in 4 straight games. Couldn’t find that. We’ll have to let Reuben Frank dig up that stat.
I thought it might have happened in 2004, but that team actually scored fewer points than you think.
* Cody Parkey is pretty darn good. He kicked off 8 times on Sunday. Parkey had 5 touchbacks. Beyond that, his kicks are deep enough that they generally are well-covered. The Skins had 46 KOR yards. Add in the fact he was 3-3 on FGs, including a 51-yarder and you can see what a weapon he has become. Many of you were mad at the Eagles for not replacing Henery sooner or bringing in better competition. The Eagles got lucky in finding Parkey as they did, but they finally did get PK right.
* Cary Williams shot his mouth off about not liking the Eagles practices. Apparently he feels they wear him down and that affects him on gameday. If that’s his opinion, so be it. I do wonder if the fact this game came on a short week has any impact on his thinking.
Kelly isn’t about to change his schedule or practice style. Williams needs to talk to him or this could lead to some friction. If Cary genuinely feels like this, he’s not going to stay quiet about it.
This just comes across to me as Williams making excuses It will be interesting to see if this story has any legs or dies quickly.
_
With a $8.1 million cap hit pending next year, best believe this will be Cary’s last season in Philly.
And Cary knows that as well, but if he complains his way off of the team he might find a squad that wants him enough to extend his contract now and/or agree to no cut him going into 2015.
Peace. See ya.
Indeed.. I don’t think Williams realizes how expendable he is. He’s a feisty competitor, which I appreciate, but he’s only an average cornerback, not some irreplaceable defensive cornerstone. He can’t afford to be a malcontent.
Cary, get a stop on 3rd down and you can rest on the sideline.
The 1949 Eagles had stretch of 6 straight games over 30 points.
Eagles didn’t give up a 3rd down conversion in the second half
This is true…..but we did give up first downs in the 2nd half….albeit only 4 or 5….the D tightened up but looking at the scoreboard…..goal post defense was the difference maker…..in any event we got killed on big plays…..Djax TD and the big screen play by Helu to set-up another TD….Cary wasn’t to blame for everything….but keeping DJAX from blowing the top off was still on some level his responsibility whether he was or was not supposed to have help…..the Helu screen was just a well designed play….Graham was engulfed by T. WIlliams such that it literally looked like a hold and he had no chance to get off the block and Allen had a shot to make a tackle but, in my opinion, left his feet unnecessarily against Helu…..thank god for Jenkins as the tackle forced the skins to use up some more clock……
It was a hold, one of two on the play.
I think it’s huge that the backup O-lineman are showing potential. I think that allows us to use resources on other important positions like CB and OLB.
If Chris Polk continues to do well on KOR, does that make our ST the best all around in the league? We have seemingly fixed one eye sore in Henery, the other being KOR.
Jordan Matthews, if he continues to be a threat in the RZ, is huge for us. That gives us two really good options in him and Ertz. Here’s to hoping Matthews can make the most of his RZ opportunities!
He should be able to this week. Jimmie Ward is SF’s nickel corner, and has been getting killed. Add in that Ward is 5’10 and Matthews should be poised to dominate this week.
The Bears were specifically drawing up plays to iso Brandon Marshall on Ward just to abuse the height mismatch.
We really needs to throw a ton of resources at olb and cb next year.
The dream has to be for Justin Houston to make it to FA. We would have the best combination of the ability to win games as well as salary cap room to aggressively pursue him.
yea, just cant see it, KC most likely cut Hali to franchise Houston
Doubt we commit the 50mil it would cost to sign a quality OLB…we have like 10 young players to extend
And safety. Nate Allen was horrid again yesterday.
He definately wasnt horrid. He had a breakdown, but he played solid in these first three. it comes down to fatigue, the style of defense the eagles play (keeping everything in front of them, albeit less this year, especially when playing faster WRs), and bradley fletcher just being inconsistent more so than cary williams, who despite being beat twice now, has played well since he got here.
Nate allen had a couple of great tackles, and some whiffs, but he is playing solid overall. The D fense looked sluggish out there. I remember saying it out loud during the game. And so it comes at no surprise to me of carys comments.
But lets give Nate Allen some credit for uping his game. He is no where near as bad as he has been.
With that said. Next year, I expect one or two new player in the secondary. Possibly nate and fletcher, and possibly cary gone. Due to age, and money. Perhaps we promote wolf and watkins and boykin and caroll. And draft two in the secondary.
Anyway Im ranting. But I remember distinctly being impressed with nates play yesterday. despite the whole defense being visibly tired, and some coverage breakdowns.
Agreed. JM looked solid yesterday. Ertz and Matthews make two good options in the red zone.
I wouldn’t count out Mac either. He’s been a red zone threat since he got here.
Here is an interesting read on the state of the 49ers right now. I wonder if the Eagles are catching them at the right time, or will they be in desperation mode come Sunday. http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2014/09/21/49ers-broken/
Sanchez better take a lot of reps, unclear who will be playing on that line. foles is super tough though, not like brady who see ghosts if you hit him early.
Niners are in a lot of trouble right now… I don’t give a shit who we are facing, it could be the Seahawks at home, they still need to score more than 14 to beat the eagles..
,,,
Niners scored 14 points kith Kapernick having one of his a better throwing days
feel better about the next game now, thanx
heard that it takes 3 years for a player to get acquainted with dick lebau’s system.
I don’t understand how anything can take 3 years to learn if it is what you do for a living.
Theoretical particle physics
Neurosurgery
Fortune 500 CEO
Sure I would agree with a 3 year learning curve for these
NFL defense? Yeaaaa… I doubt that
Dick Lebeau said this himself BTW.
Totally agree with the last sentence.
Check this out just found it
http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2013/6/14/4428122/steelers-defense-breakdown-dick-lebeau-scheme
I guess the guys playing football in the NFL, PROBABLY don’t have the same IQ as the occupations you listed either. It’s funny you should mention neurosurgery, I’m in my second year of med school and this material isn’t necessarily tough but there sure is a hell of a lot of it.
Yea a guy a few years ahead of me on the team just finished his third year. He said he would much rather be doing the material as opposed to some of the ridiculous liberal arts undergrad paper, but the thing that kills you is having to lock yourself away for days at a time to study.
Like I’m doing right now? lol
Dick Lebeau said this himself BTW, football is a complicated game and every individual defense obviously has individual roles. You gotta establish a feel for the game within the scheme in your spot. Especially the linebackers in the system. Same defense as ours, our players took to it quickly but looking at them they’re not ready still. We still don’t have any of our own 3-4 DE’s to rush the passer, you really need to find special players to thrive in our 3-4 OLB/DE hybrid like a Von Miller or Demarcus Ware. Carolina never showed insane potential till last year, sometimes it takes a few years for all players to get a feel for it as a group. If our pass rush was better today our CB’s could’ve had a better game.
Yes, I know he did, perhaps he was talking about subtleties.
Yup the little intricacies have to be hard to nail down, must be frustrating. We need to focus on defense in the draft from here in out, we can always sign proven receivers and even o-lineman. We got o-line depth. If we don’t keep Celek after this year we gotta get a better blocking TE. But we really need some true 3-4players epecially on the d-line.
Our line is our best position. All of the players at that position are ideally suited to play a 2 gap 34.
I think Trent Cole isn’t at all especially rushing, I like Thornton and cox. We gave cousins way too much time to pass. Basically we need some legit fast rushers. Vic Beasley would be nice, reminds me of Von Miller. Sucks against the run but a terror for qb’s. Sadly he’ll go too high in the draft.
I like Curry and all them, Graham too.. but where was the pressure today? It was frustrating to watch.
Cole is an OLB. The job of the 2gap 34 DL is to eat up blocks and control the run game, allowing the linebackers to make plays. Those kinds of guys tend to top out around 4 or 5 sacks a year. The guys we have excel at what the coaching staff wants them to do. I think everyone agrees that we need to get a top flight OLB to improve the pass rush. Cole is wearing down, Graham is a nightmare when put in coverage, Barwin is more of a jack of all trades, and Smith needs time to develop his pass rushing skills. A big problem with our pass rush today was that the team from washington did a great job with playcalling. They ran the ball well enough to avoid becoming one dimensional and keeping us from pinning our ears back to go get the QB, and most of their throws were fairly quick hitting and didn’t let the rush get too developed.
As far as Vic Beasley, I am confidently willing to say that he will not be an Eagles target. He’s too small and doesn’t fit the size dimensions Kelly wants. He also is a speed rusher exclusively.
Which OLB’s are you looking at for next years draft?
Alvin Dupree was my favorite based off preseason film.
Dion Jordan… No more rookie OLBs. Take too long to develop, we need immediate help
I really think we are missing that one OLB rusher. The d-line is pretty good, just need more practice.
http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2013/6/14/4428122/steelers-defense-breakdown-dick-lebeau-scheme
Did he say it twice?
It takes about four to five years for a qood young QB to become a good QB.
Yes, I guess there is the question of learning the bulk of a scheme as compared to the subtleties. I assume there is a steep learning curve when you get into the league but the curve sharply falls of after 1-1.5 years. However, there is still room to grow but I would argue the rest of the growth has to do with feel for the position and game not the scheme itself. I’m just arguing semantics and I understand what both Lebau and you are saying.
Cary Williams is trying to make an excuse for being toasted by DJ and the other weeks he’s gotten toasted. Until he stops getting burned, he has nothing to say.
I’m sure Chip can’t wait til his monday press conference to answer 500 questions about what Williams said.
Something else about Williams quotes no one seems to be talking about. He also threw his teammates under the bus.. by basically saying he was the only player man enough to say what they’re thinking publicly.. Weather or not that’s true I’m sure it’s going over well. The entire Eagles Defense apparently isn’t man enough.
Why is it that Carrol is not starting yet? Is he really any less effective then Williams or Fletcher? Also, i have to give credit to our ILB’s in the run game. Ryans is a soldier out there to say the least and without Kendricks, Morris didnt gash us in the run game. Obviously without Kendricks we were not generating any pressure up the middle, but at least the combo of Acho, Smith and Mathews were not a huge liability in this game. Have to say we did benefit that the Skins were minus Reed however.
Agreed. Let Carrol start after a full week of Chip practices and give Williams or Fletcher some rest – who ever has the poorer conditioning….
After midnight and I’m still on Eagles Blitz. Can’t sleep after that game, especially those final 10 minutes. There was the cheap shot on Foles, Jason’s retaliation and the fight. Nick dusts himself off and leads the td drive which included the reversed call on the pass to Maclin. Then the interception and the 51 yard fg. Wash scores and will get the ball back in great field position because of the crappy punt, but the D makes another 4th quarter stand. What a night. What a fun team to watch.
Oh yea, hey Carey Williams, shut-up.
I know. Im only 25 and i feel as though these 3 games are going to lead to heart problems.
I was 23 at the beginning of the season and I think I’m going to be eligible for social security by the bye week.
Hey, HEY! I’m 24. We are all so close in age #hipsters?
I’m only 20 and at this pace I won’t make it past the bye week
WOOO Young people with heart problems… 21 and i watched the came in the college library on my laptop….. Never again
WTF? I would have been kicked out of the library two minutes in… Would start ripping book shells down during the FOles cheap shot,,,, it’s actually impressive to be able to watch that game in a library without getting kicked Out…
…
The fight happened like 8 rows in front of me…I swear half our section wanted to get on the field and fight Baker and Trent williams
well it wasn’t on television in Ireland and my internet wont give a good stream at home, It being week 2 saved me from getting kicked out because there was nobody there
I’m afraid this Cary Williams thing could mushroom into a big problem if it’s not addressed at once. There was talk on CSN from DGunn & Westbrook about players that privately confessed to them they agreed with what he said.
This is the last damn thing this team needs right now. They’re having enough trouble fighting these damn injuries & trying to fix their other issues. I’m sick of this guy always running his mouth when he’s one of the last people who ought to be doing it.
You only think that because you’ve become accustomed to Andy Reid coached Eagles. This won’t phase a Chip Kelly locker room.
all the write ups and all the history of CK — where’s historic proof that CK wouldn’t handle this? It doesn’t matter what talk you hear on any outlet. Unless CK says it — the rest is just pure guess work….
While Williams is clearly dumb and a jerk, he might be right. Emboldened by all the praise for how healthy the team was last year, and for his lightning fast practice pace, maybe Chip has gone overboard. The players did seem to have a lot of pulled hamstrings and nagging injuries this off-season.
Eagles outscoring opponents 74-24 in 2nd half this yr.
But the problem is, they practiced the same way last year and the O-line started the entire year. But Williams was still getting burnt!
I heard the pace at training camp was even faster this summer. Chip might be stepping on the gas a little harder, this year. I think some people are being self-righteous and macho by casually dismissing the idea that a team’s regular season practices could possibly be too demanding. Chip stresses recovery time, but he’s also emphatic about getting as many reps as possible. Right now, he may not be striking the right balance.
Go bend over for your uncle and give the media threads a break.
“It’s going to be interesting to see if this story has any legs”- well Tommy, you see the media will run this story so hard during the week that if it does have legs, at least they won’t be very fresh
Well played
I gotta say..I’m eating crow for doubting Kelvin Benjamin’s ability.
Same, still has some drops but guy is a baller. Also if Matthews can keep up making catches like last game, I will also eat crow with him
Yeh, as long as he stops dropping so many damn balls, I will be quite happy with him.
Matthews has never been know for that so I’m thinking that will go away.
He was known for dropping balls coming out of college, if that hadn’t been a problem he probably would have been picked in round 1.
Yes, Benjamin has drops.
You have plenty of company. Though I did think Chip was paying extra close attention during his combine drills. I’m sure what put Jordon Mathews over the top was his ability to articulate football situations.
Marquis Lee… Meh so far
ODB hSNT EVEN PRACTICED Yet
Codie Latimer has been a healthy scratch these past two weeks.
Allen Robinson hasn’t done anything.
Mike Evans has been meh
…
So far the rookie WR making instant contributions are:
Kelvin Benjamin
Sammy
Cooks
JOhn brown Arizona
Jordan Mathews..
….
But in reality, which rookie has played well up to this point means nothing
So, to recap, the best rookie receivers are the ones that 1. are currently healthy, 2. are not pushed down the depth chart due to established veterans, and 3. have a somewhat decent QB and an OL that can keep him upright. Not exactly some secret insight there.
Sammy is playing well, Mike Evans isn’t…both get plenty of snaps, and play with crappy QBs…so NO! But thanks for playing….. Regroup and come back and try again tomorrow
..
Apparently you missed my last line where it doesn’t mean anything, but thanks for consistently being a cunt
rookie wrs? it’s hard for high picks they are usually playing with terrible qbs
I’m not the one that calls kids busts in september
I just can’t see Chip putting up with Carey shooting off at the mouth like this. If the practice style is wearing down the players as Cary claims, how does it work that we started 3-5 last year & then went on an absolute TEAR winning games the rest of the way? Welcome to the 1st string Nolan. Now Cary will have more time to compare prices on sconces. I’ll take some more Boykin as well please. We are 3-0 against all odds with our injury plagued squad and this idiotic tool is stirring up a bee hive. All he comes off as is a bitter wine ass making excuses for getting flame broiled by DJax. I WAS a Cary fan until this. Now all I see is a Diva cry baby that cant handle being bested. OK, enough about that tool. I don’t know how long we can keep this up with our O line looking like a group of jersey wearing turn styles, but I’m SO proud of the fight in this team! Way to go guys. Lastly, how AWESOME was it seeing Polk torch Wash. on that 102 yd KO return? AMAZING! Also, KUDOS to Foles for hanging in there and being downright uncanny with his poise considering Washingtons entire and line LIVED in our damned backfield! Great job Iggles! : ))
Watch, it’s going to be a non issue with this coach and this locker room.
…
No big deal
arent there rules in place to wear you cant over work players? pretty sure there is and im pretty sure chip follows it
what an up and down game from bradley flecther.. lol.. still cant decide if i like him or not.. at least he doesnt talk like carey
That’s another thing with Cary’s comments. I think Fletcher is worse but Cary is a nuisance who isn’t really that great. But do you have replacements for either of them (now or future)?
OMG how foolish of us! OF COURSE it’s Chip’s practices that are to blame for Sconces tough sledding today! How could it POSSIBLY be that a highly motivated DeSean repeatedly put a clown suit on him?? Silly us…..
This is the same CB who got smoked in the first game of the sesaon by an UDFA, so it is mor about Williams overall ability than anything else
Exactly right.
But if you asked Cary about him being burned by Jacksonville’s no name receiver, i’ll bet you a sconce that his excuse would be along the lines of it being Kelly’s fault for making the team practice on Tuesdays.lol
I agree that Cary is a tool but that no name receiver, Alan Hurns, was one of only 4 UM receivers with a 1,000 yard season. He had a 61 yard TD yesterday. The fact that he went undrafted was what I can’t understand.
Cary out. Nolan in?
How about Boykin in at CB? On nickel Cary comes in to play CB and Boykin slides to cover slot?
Insert “rookie WR” and consider how Cary talks, should never get so badly burned
No dude, I totally agree with you. Cary hasn’t played well. Neither has Fletcher and Nate.
After his ill-timed comment I think he needs to go as soon as they can replace him.
I’d start Nolan and take a look at what FA Champ Bailey can do.
Are u on crack? Playoff team cutting his best outside corner over some silly talk, and pick up Champ “senior citizen” Bailey who can’t guard anyone?
…
Have u seen how horrible Bradley fletch is? U want to start Champ Baily and Brad Fletcher on the outside? Jesus Christ people
“As soon as they can replace him” is what I said.
I also said I’d start NOLAN and take a look at Champ Bailey.
You’re assuming I’d cut Cary and start Bailey over Nolan.
Why so angry? Bad morning?
Why would I be angry? Just how I speak…
…
I just enjoyed an instant classic, and all I can find is fans bashing our best outside corner the day after..
..
Better be bashing Nate and Brad, before you even get to Cary
being the biggest runt in the litter doesn’t make one big…
I don’t trust any of our secondary to play a full game on a consistent basis outside of Jenkins at this point, and he’s still relatively unknown. Williams is capable of having a good game as is Fletcher, but they both give up too many plays for anyone to be comfortable with them as your long term #1 and #2 CBs.
Think Cary! Nolan, Boykin, Jalen will all be back next year, replacing Brad….unless Cary refuses to restructure
Ok. So now I know how you speak. Ha ha.
Fletcher has been 70/30. 30% awesome. 70% frustration. The only thing Nate did that I liked was to get in between MeSean Jackson and Jenkins. That little chest bump put Jackson’s arms down instantly. Watch the replay.
I couldn’t believe we were up 10 with five minutes to go and then found ourselves fighting to prevent them from FG range.
can’t even read birds 24/7 people so crazy
He didn’t even practice all week so not sure why he is so tired…needs to keep his mouth shut.
My not-so-random thought:
If the guy in my avatar was still HC, we’d be 0-3, not 3-0 at this point.
In Chip we trust.
I can’t figure if there is more to this Cary Williams thing or not. He may have something, especially on short weeks. But it is Cary Williams so someof his comments can be taken with a grain of salt. I tend to think the Eagles defense just isn’t that talented.
By the way, this draft class outside of Matthews is really not looking that great.
3 weeks into their rookie year. You’re judging them about 28 months early.
Smith’s rushing needs work but he can cover and set the edge
Matthews is a starter
Huff has been hurt but will likely contribute on both offense and special teams when healthy.
Watkins is a developmental player with physical skills
Hart played decently in preseason and can rotate in if DL has any injuries
Reynolds is learning on the practice squad
Beau is a quality rotational player
We were picking on the back end of every round, we weren’t likely going to get a bunch of guys who were going to be impact players from the jump.
Sproles?
There isn’t and I bet it just dies down this week with too many other things to discuss. Williams just runs his mouth.
LOL smh… Bunch of Busts huh?
LMMFAO!!!!!! Last week, all were a bust. Suddenly Mathews isn’t a bust? ahahahahahahahaha……
Lol gotta love our fans
Eagles gained 72 yards on the 27 plays after Kelce left the game. Who ever figured that McCoy might be less crucial to the Eagles than Kelce.
Cw is an idiot he is gonna get so much flack for his comments. I’m sure Carrol is saying that Williams can spend every Saturday on his couch, if he’s winded.
There might be some truth to what Williams said this week especially coming off a short week.
The was the dumbest thing he said though towards the end of his conversation:
“Maybe if his legs weren’t done …
Still, the Eagles overcame Jackson’s 117 receiving yards and the Redskins’ 511 yards of total offense to improve to 3-0. They went 10-6 last season in Kelly’s first year as head coach. The routine worked last year, right, so why not now? Has head coach Chip Kelly’s sports science solution lost its magic?
Williams took a long pause before answering.
“You’ve got to be politically correct all the time at all times,”
Williams said. “You take those words with a grain of salt from last
year. To be honest with you, it is what it is.”
http://www.csnphilly.com/football-philadelphia-eagles/cary-williams-im-burnt-out-and-im-not-only-one
How many cliches can he possibly deliver? If you are going to criticize the coach, then at least just stick by what you said instead of giving a mealy-mouthed response to end the conversation.
I just don’t get why players feel the need to call out the coaches in public, Just say it to Chip or the other coaches if you have a problem with something.
We don’t know if he tried to address it behind closed doors, and his complaint wasn’t taken serious
Still no reason to go public and draw attention to yourself and the team.. No point bringing in distractions… And i like cary i just think it was a dumb thing to do
Absolutely a Dumb thing to do…. I don’t think you will find anyone that is happy that Cary chose to go that route, I just personally, want to know more, I’d like to know if this is a real issue that needs to improve, rather than just spend the day bashing Cary….. I think the fact that he should be saying this to the media is understood……doubt any fan would side with Cary on that
I wouldn’t let yourself worry about it too much. Cary runs his mouth all the time. Even if there is a bit of truth to his statement, Chip really could give two fucks. And since I believe in Chip as an elite coach, and I believe Cary is an average CB on his good days–I think he just needs to shut his mouth and be happy he is a starter and paid $$$.
We aren’t talking about Richard Sherman or Patrick peterson here. If he keeps running his mouth about Chip and his staff, his shelf life is ticking with this team.
Teams have won Super Bowl with an average defense, and elite QBs trying to pick on this average corner..
..
Average corner had a heckuva two month run at the end of last year against elite WR tandems…
…
Cary isn’t a stud, but I would LOVE to have him as our #2 for two more years. He is a big game corner who plays his best when it matters, of course it comes with dealing with his “manny being manny” mouth, and him playing down to level of comp when we play bad teams like Vikings, Titans, rams…
…
But playof time, you want Cary in a foxhole with you!
It’s amazing how good scheme can make an average CB look.
I’d also like a big game corer who plays his best, you know, all the time.
We really need to get boykin on the field more… Size or no size I would rather have seen him on the field instead of Fletcher yesterday.. Everyone loves their match-ups and to be fair, WAS didn’t have a big receiver, other than tight ends, that warranted keeping him off the field for either of our starting corners. Garcon, Roberts, and D Jax, were too shifty/quick for Fletch and Cary yesterday.
Fletcher was terrible yesterday.
He looks flat footed when the receiver comes out of his break, especially when he plays off, and then he is nowhere near the WR. He just cant seem to get his feet set quickly enough
Glad his contract is up.
And Cary’s due a lot of money next year, we could have 2 new outside corners next year.
Figure Carroll for one and a new FA for the 2nd.
Watkins might get a shot… Just hope Boykin doesn’t leave to play outside somewhere else
He probably will because he’s going to get outside money to do it. Watching Bradley get burned and Boykin on the sideline proves that Chip has no intention to play him at CB.
could we pay him enough for him to want to stay here?
Technically, yes. The Eagles will have the money.
Realistically, no. They can’t pay him starting CB money to play nickel. That is unless Chip decided to start him at CB.
I’d nearly rather see him out there instead of nate at safety than see him elsewhere… He’s our best coverage player, we cant lose him
Yeah, I’m not too happy with Nate’s play but Boykin can’t play SS.
I’d like to see Chip give Boykin some opportunities to prove he can cover the big body WRs like Johnson, Benjamin, etc.
They nearly played him at LB at the start of last year i don’t get why they’re keeping him off the field.. and he covered Dez against the cowboys last year and did well, so he can cover WR’s with good size
I’m ready to see him start at corner over Cary. Maybe Cary can play at SS. Ha.
I’m still livid over a few things:
– The cheap shot on Foles. I was ready to hop in the car and drive to DC to fight Skins fans over the whole things. Say hello to @cbaker92redskin if you’d like to let him know what you think about his play yesterday.
– The horrible play of Fletcher and Nate Allen. Too many blown coverages and missed tackles.
– The fact we had to sweat out a win against a sub-standard opponent. I know division games are by natures often tighter affairs, but every game vs. Washington should be as enjoyable as the Haynesworth laying down on the ground game.
-The blown holding call when Trent Williams held Brandon Graham on the Helu long pass gain play.
And I still want to brawl over the hit on Foles.
horrible play by Nate shouldn’t be surprise – it’s a constant.
Do you really think it was holding on Graham? At first I thought it was and went back and watched the replay and it seemed clean. That play was a back breaker
im glad we won otherwise everything would be about how chip misses desean and how the team made a wrong decision but hey thats now the case! the team looked pretty amazing with wrs maclin and matthews! Chip is a mastermind who knows exactly what hes doing. hard practices or not this team is 3-0 and our team just explodes at the end of games when other teams are exhausted for a reason
The failure to upgrade the pass rush seems to be the only major failing of this off-season. Jenkins upgraded from Chung at the one safety spot, but Nate Allen needs to be the next to go.
Poor Jenkins has to play with Nate, Fletcher and Cary.
I do think that an upgrade at OLB will make the DBs look better.
Later Cary. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Tell MeSean we said hello.
As long as Kelce has those wheels, I don’t care if Cary has no legs.
Kelce seems he would be a faster CB than Williams at this point and better
Funny u mention the Winston justice sackfest in New York. Westbrook talked about how he was pissed that game that our OL wasn’t even helping Mcnabb get up off the turf! and the contrast to this team where you see the best player go punch a nose tackle in the face for hitting it’s QB…. That’s a very good sign of a closenit team
What excuses does cary have to make… He defended a deepthreat expecting safety help over the top, when the safety help didn’t come, the best deep threat in the game burned us,,, if he was just making excuse, all he would had to do was point at Nate…
…
Cary didn’t have a bad showing that he needed to make excuses for. Maybe Bradley Fletcher should have offered an excuse, but I don’t see why Cary would need to…and Cary specifically talks about how he isn’t the only one that feels this way…don’t think he just made that up to look for an excuse that he didn’t need to make after a game we won….If they are playing with heavy legs on Sunday, I hope it is addressed instead of just trashing Cary for it..
…
I’m more disturbed if it’s true, than by Cary saying it….of course I would have prefered he said it to Chip behind closed doors..
Death, taxes and Nate Allen never helping over the top are 3 guarantees in life. Nate doesn’t get it, he never will get it. It’s an instinct.
Fans show what a joke they are…. Brad gave up ATleast 20 receptions yesterday, Nate was poor at best….yet Today, eagles fans are bashing Cary Williams over two sentences he made…doubt anyone signed Cary because of the brilliant things that come out of his mouth…
When CW was signed we new he was going to be a character. Hey, at least we don’t have to read all that crap about Foles not being the guy this week….
he played like vintage foles yesterday
He played like a fuckin Legend yesterday…
True that…. Let Cary be the lightning rod, ATleast it’s entertaining…
..
Wonder what it takes to see us win a game, and see a happy fanbase the day after? Lol.. We will beat the Niners this week, and people will cry about a lack of style points, then they will say Kapernick sucks, so we didnt beat a good QB, and be down on the team because we only score 34 against the banged up niners instead or 54….. Me, I’m going to enjoy the shit out of a young team that’s still growing, starting the season 4-0
we could have morons not make stupid comments . That would make the fanbase happy.
I tell you what you seem to like doing research. Find me a quote where Cary Williams ever takes the blame for anything or says he needs to play better. I’ll give his comments more gravity then.
D3FB had said that Nate was defending a crossing route so he couldn’t cover the deep route. That being said, Nate really is nothing to be super proud about. At least the safeties are way better than last year.
Nate had over the top of that play. Nate got cocky and didn’t play Desean like the deep threat that he is
that’s not what people said on the nfl network. Nate has 2 responsibilities —- either to step up and cover that cross over(if you do, you throw deep) or drop back and cover deep. Nate did neither of the 2. He just stood there and tried to react after the throw. That’s the instinct I talk about with Nate Allen. He can’t read the play, he reacts after the play.
Nate can not see the field and see DJ streaming towards him. He has to understand DJ is going to be faster than anybody else on the defense. Nate should have been telling himself that PRIOR to DJ separating from the defender, I HAVE to start moving and help.
Tuesday — rule #1 don’t let DJ get behind you.
Wed — Rule #1 don’t let DJ get behind you.
Thurs — Rule #1 don’t let DJ get behind you.
fast forward to Sunday
Nate — what’s rule #1? NA — stand still? Good job Nate.
Trust me, I watched that play a million times last night..that was Nates fault…
…
A CB, who expects over the top help isn’t trying to shut down Desean, he is just trying to shut down underneath Desean..when they throw overtop of the CB playing underneath, that’s the safeties fault…
“..
Not to mention Cary already said he was supposed to have safety help on that….you can’t expect him to stop that throw over the top if he is playing underneath expecting over the top safety help..
…
An entire fanbase bitching about Cary’s practice comments, if they want to bitch! they should be bitching about Cary throwing Nate under the bus. Take the loss, no reason to throw your team mate under the bus and let everyone know that it was his fault instead of yours….that’s what we should be bitching about, not his practice comments
Ordering my authentic Jason peters jersey today…. Makes no sense not to have a future hall of famers jersey in my collection
Every time I buy a jersey, the player is gone with in the next 2 years. I won’t buy one of his yet. However, I ordered 10 Nate Allen Jerseys to speed up the process.
Lol taking one for the team huh?
Is it unbelievable that the defense is exhausted?
Am I the only one that thought the defense looked sluggish from the begginning of the game? except trent cole and conner barwin?
Not saying they shouldnt work through this period and maybe they will extend their bodies ability to endure.
but I expected the defense, once I saw how tired they looked, to give up points….
When Cary made the comment he did, It wasnt a surprise. I am surprised I dont hear people saying how tired the defense, especially looked.
But Cary taking comments to the media. is troublesome.
We just had a Monday night road game…our legs probably weren’t going to be up to par this week…not to mention the weird first half when our offense was never on the field
But noone wants to put the factor a player that actually goes through the program says is a factor as an actual factor?….imma leave this alone now…
We may view Cary as a nusance, but perhaps the team views him as a leader….
well that leader just said he was the only person MAN enough to say what he said. So yeah, I’m sure that will go over well with the 22 other guys on defense who are just less manly than cary williams.
he did say that…your right….
I don’t love Cary going public, but I agree that the D did look slow. Part of this is the short week and the absence of Kendricks. Another part of this is the fact that the D was on the field for almost the entire first quarter. This shouldn’t be overlooked.
On the other hand, we also saw the D start slowly last season. Clearly, jumping into new regime/scheme was a big part of this. But you may be right that this hurts now but will help the team in the long term. It’s tough to forget how the vets were talking about how good they felt at the end of last season.
I think the real takeaway is that we just need some new corners and a pass rusher. For real. The scheme is solid but only gets us so far. Cary’s words sound like blaming others when he’s not playing well. For some reason, players like Boykin can come up big at the end of the game. Maybe it’s because he’s more talented and has a knack for winning in those situations.
I agree about the pass rusher. That is the reason the secondary is getting roasted. We have absolutely zero pass rush.
and I do not use caps lock, and normally despise those that do, but……CAN WE PLEASE START BOYKIN?!?!?!?
The guy played 29% of the snaps last week-not sure what it was this week. Fletcher is horrible, Cary apparently has female problems. Boykin is our best CB and he is playing less that half the snaps. Outrageous.
Think lack of pass rush yesterday was overrated.., the way jay Gruden called that game and Cousin getting the ball out fast, I don’t think any defense would have gotten much pressure on them yesterday..
,,
Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the opponent
In fact, that statement works both ways, let’s not forget the Snyders had 10 sacks vs Jax last week; we can’t really complain about not getting much pressure on the opposition when our QB is doing much the same thing to counter their pressure.
Our QB was “LEGEN…wait for it….DARY” yesterday!
…
That was legendary Bradshaw toughness on display
But breakdown to me how Cary is not playing well…I thought he had a ok game….and the deep pass wasn’t his fault. though he should have made the tackle…which he normally does….
I am frustrated with that narrative, because I think its what people want to think, due to his past and how people view him as bothersome…we agree, him going public was not good, but the fact that he did, is it more him being him or is it that he felt he had no other choice? is he speaking on behalf of other players? at any rate…chip fixing this is going to be critical going forward…I think they just have small adjustments to make….I read reports about how they try to monitor the players and sometimes I can imagine they play players too much during the week..maybe this time they just didnt realize it and it will be bottled up to a small mistake by the sports science staff. The program isn’t perfect..so theyll get it adjusted…..Why the story isn’t focused on the program needing to get a little tighter, is due to Carys character…but maybe the team sees him as a leader and someone who is in the position to speak up for them…..
Not sure if this has been said. Maybe Chip wants Cary to be angry. Maybe Cary plays better when he’s pissed off at everyone. Just a thought.
he was pissed b/c djax was yacking and making plays. djax and cary are the same personality.
I don’t think you worry about the X’s and O’s from this game… This wasn’t even a game, it was a fuckin war of attrition… Game tape I don’t even care about this week… This was just two rivals beating on each other all game long..tougher team that could overcome the most shit was going to win yesterday, and that was us to no surprise. Yesterday wasn’t really about coaching or execution… Was just about toughness, grit, which team could stick together and keep their emotions in check the best…plenty to improve on from yesterday, but IMO that was an instant classic NFC east War
`Yesterday wasn’t really about coaching or execution…
Do have to tip my hat to Gruden, he called an excellent offensive game yesterday…`
which is it?
can`t have both ways
Man, it’s tough not to feel good about the 2014 Eagles. Reading the articles about the the game and the brawl, makes you proud to support this team. Kelly really has emphasized the TEAM and it shows.
I still blown away by what FOles and his WRs did yesterday… I knew facing this secondary that this would be the week our WRs made everyone eat Crow, but I didn’t expect such an instant classic…with that said, I also expected us to spread the defense out and run the ball, which didn’t happen at all…but we can’t ask a backup OL to execute our run blocks, double team the first guy, than peel off and get to the second level…it’s not realistic to expect two lineman that have no experience together executing the blocks needed to make our run game work, so FOles willed us to a win!
…
What FOles did yesterday was incredible…
..
Chips interview with cataldi was awesome this morning!!! I hate Angelo, but it knew he would be good today after those dirty stinking redskins acted I like filthy scum
Chip’s interview this morning:
RE: Jason Peters
“He channeled his inner Berube.”
When asked how he felt about Peters’s actions:
“Next question.”
No doubt about it, Chip even makes it easier for the media to do their job.
* Cary Williams shot his mouth off about not liking the Eagles practices. Apparently he feels they wear him down and that affects him on gameday. If that’s his opinion, so be it. I do wonder if the fact this game came on a short week has any impact on his thinking.
the previous game was MNF. Chip usually gives the team off on Mondays after the game, instead of Tuesday which seems normal for other coaches (?).
i wonder if they did not get a day off this past week.
which makes me REALLY worry about the thanksgiving day game… do we just not practice? or do we show up to the game completely unprepared?
If we will be unprepared, imagine dysfunctional Dallas.
…
Chip isn’t a Tryant… If he needs to tweek his short week schedule because of this he will, but I don’t know that to be the case just off of a Cary comment..
..
Curious if he has been feeling this way for weeks, or just because of this short week
I think he’s just looking for excuses that don’t start with the words “I” or end in “me.” as in “I need to play better” or “that’s on me.” Actually I’m curious if cary williams has ever said either of those two things.
OMG.
Jason Peters sure is Bout it Bout it!
If it’s true that other defenders feel the way Cary does, than tweeking the practice schedule could pay dividends… Just because the messenger is the village idiot, doesn’t mean we can automatically rule out the message..
..
If this is true, hopefully it’s an opportunity to tweek or practice habits, and go into games flying around with fresher legs…
…
If a bunch of players are talking about this behind coaches back, it might be a good thing that Cary is making noise, and making sure this will be addressed, rather than have it fester with guys talking about our coaches methods behind their back…
Actually the messenger being the village idiot is sadly a very good reason to doubt the validity of the message. Kind of like pretty much everyone who’s been “abducted” by aliens is some moron in the sticks. You don’t see the military scrambling jets every time that happens
So last year guys like Trent Cole and some of the older veterans talk about how they felt fresher than they ever did come the end of they year, what changed so fast? This probably doesn’t make Chip too happy, if you’re going to be a man, be a man to the coach not through the media. I always thought it was gutless to go through the media to point something out you could actually talk to the actual person about.
Also, a long Skins drive followed by a kickoff return for a touchdown followed by another long skins drive didn’t help. Get them off the field if you want to rest.
got a defense giving up 450 yds in the air, with no pass rush.
The longer Cary Williams’ quotes in the article by Tim McManus http://www.phillymag.com/birds247/2014/09/21/williams-training-negatively-affecting-eagles/ make things a little more confusing:
“I think it negatively impacted a lot of
people, and I’m not the only person. I’m just one that is man enough to
stand up here and talk to y’all and address the issue that’s obviously
in my opinion an issue in our starts”
…
“Whatever they deem necessary for us to be
ready on Sundays is whatever it is, if we’ve got to find energy from
outside source or whatever it may be to start games quick, then we’ve
got to do it.”
…
“When you don’t have legs, period, it shows up in games, period, throughout the game, period.”
So, Cary feels the hard training they go through is at fault for them starting slow. Since we don’t know exactly what training they do, or how much, it’s entirely possible that’s true.
I’m not sure I understand how the D manages to play better in the second half of games (which they seem to have, so far this season) if they’re worn down and tired, though. Particularly given how many more snaps they have to play than other team’s Ds do because of the tempo of our offense. Especially if they “.. don’t have legs, period”. Now it starts to sound a little like someone starting to feel not as young as he used to.
the makes a play. They’ll get a pick or a turnover. They’ve gotten two stops in the last two games, but it’s hard to look at the skins game and think they played “well”. they outscored the skins.
Trent Cole said he felt better than he ever has at the end of the year last year, no one was complaining last year. I think when your defense gets lit up and you’re part of that defense, shit starts being said. Shit=excuses
they put a lot on the D. The offense keeps them on the field all day. we get no pass rush and we’ve been getting run on lately so its tough.
That’s absolutely true, the same questions/worries we had last year. That’s the way it is with a Chip run offense, maybe that’s why he does all that sports science stuff, keep his team in shape. All of a sudden after one year and 3 games it becomes an issue? I’m not saying it’s just Carey, I heard Brian Westbrook, who knows some of these players and has access to them, saying he personally heard some players talking about it.
This may be a reason we never heard of a Chip team, college or otherwise, who has had a dominant defense.
Couldn’t one say — that if they defense would play better .. more 3 and outs, they’d stay fresh? Isn’t it their own fault they’re on the field that much during a game?
While the offense certainly is quick strike, what keeps the D on the field all day is their inability to stop anything whatsoever in the first half. At the very least, they should be winning against the run, but man, did the potatoes OL dominate them there for 3 quarters. And I don’t think I’ve seen a QB feel as little pressure on his dropbacks as Cousins did yesterday. They’d blitz, and still Cousins would have a perfect pocket to step into for at least 4 seconds. Those are the things that keep you on the field all day.
Their inability to make a stop or consistently rush the passer also keeps them on the field all day.
my thoughts exactly
at the beginning of the game, you better not be tired. you should work your ass off to get off the field. you get off the field, you get to rest. you don’t, you stay on the field.
seeing as how the D couldn’t stop them at all in the first half, its no wonder they were so tired.
get off the field, run back, get back on the field. was like 10 minutes of straight defense.
Isn’t a little counter intuitive to think your legs are not there for the start of the game because of being overworked, but they are there in the second half??? This guy is a moron who is looking to blame.
Blame what? We won an awesome game, and he was our best outside cornerback yesterday when Brad and Nate had horrendous games… The Desean play wasn’t even his fault…what does he have to blame!
Cary was solid. The desean play wasnt his fault-not blaming him. I was talking about him blaming the performance of the defense as a whole.
While Cary is not the dumpster fire that Fletcher is, make no mistake–if the coaches decided to pull their head out of their ass and start Boykin on the outside, he is instantly our best CB.
Boykin playing less than half the snaps is ridiculous.
Boykin has no business on the outside, and slot CB is just as Important…don’t get this fanbase desire to see us lose the best nickel CB in the NFL and make him an ok at best outside corner…. In today’s NFL your nickel is friggin crucial… Fuck the outside, I enjoy having the best nickel CB in the NFL…
Boykin has more business being on the outside than Fletcher or your boy Cary. It’s not about positions, it’s about playing time. Cary and Fletcher play 95-100% of the snaps. Fletcher sucks and to say Cary is average is giving him a compliment. He is definitely not worth the damn headache his mouth brings.
Boykin, on the other hand, played less than 29% of the snaps last week. Not sure what it is this week, but we will see. I do know that every damn time I saw Cary and Fletcher getting toasted on the outside, Boykin was not on the field which is a problem.
So, however you want to catgorize Boykin playing time, I dont care. I refuse to be pulled into an arguement about how 3 inches on a CB makes that much of a difference. Boykin is a special athlete. Cary is not. Boykin needs to be on the field.
“an ok at best outside CB”
Please show me the examples of his failures at outside CB.
We have binders full of Cary’s failures.
You are like an empty barrel rolling down a hill. Just alot of noise. Way too many posts with alot of nonsense that doesn’t make much sense.
I wish they had never have banned you on the 24/7 blog. It pains me to read your interactions with other posters on here.
he played outside in pre-season. No pretty. Did you see Kelvin Benjamin last night going against a 5-10 corner? He make plays inside people play a lot of 3wr sets. Cary being bad doesn’t mean Boykin should take his job.
Please let me know when Boykin started a regular season game on the outside. I want to go check the stats for myself.
Not advocating Cary being replaced over Fletcher. I am saying Boykin needs to be starting and play as much as a starter. You figure out who needs to sit. I think both our CB are suspect but Fletcher is worse.
The defense sucked yesterday, no one is left out to blame, that’s bullshit.
Here’s the problem – even if he is telling the truth and there are other guys who feel the same way, why does he voice his concerns by talking about it to a reporter? Why not talk to his position coach, Davis, Kelly or Huls? He reminds me of one of my kids who does things they know are wrong because they want some attention.
I really like Employee #26 and what he brings to the team though. I guess you don’t get his on-field attitude without some immaturity to go with it.
A) you don’t know if he already tried talking to coaches.
…
B) believe it or not, voicing it could be a good thing. So much better to get this out in the open and make sure it’s adressed rather than have a bunch of players resenting our methods behind coaches back…if players really do feel this way, not continuing to let it fester, and addressing it now, could actually be a real positive for us..
…
We don’t have enough info at this point to really be able to judge the situation..
..
You want something real to bash Cary over? Bash him for telling the world that it was Nates fault on the Desean play….that we KNOW, is a bad idea…
.
Don’t know enough to really judge this practice situation
I know he called the rest of the locker room less manly than himself. So there’s that. Stay classy carry williams.
The Asomuga move he made yesterday was sad, sick of that fucking blame shit.
Another thing I been meaning to talk about and I keep forgetting:
,..
Last year, Chip did a brilliant job, but showed that he needed to improve some of his NFL game managing. We saw him make some mistakes last year, making decisions based on what worked in college, that just doesn’t translate to the NFL..
..
Chip need to be praised, because I don’t see him making any of those college coach mistakes any more…he is calling games, playing situational NFL football like a pro coach this year..
..
You can tell Chip learned a lot last year and looks to have adjusted beautiful to life as a pro coach…
…
No ego with this man. He will honestly self scout himself down to every player and coach on this team, and if something needs imoroving, he tackles it and gets It right…
…
I see real improvement in his coaching situational NFL football….heck, we sucked at challenged last year, so the mad scientist goes an hires a senior challenge official from college, and now we seem to be winning or challenges…
…
If you see mistakes, have no fear, Chip will tackle them and make sure they get corrected
I agree and it seems like such a no brainer to hire a ref for challenges.
We had a really good coach in Reid. And no knock on him, but Chip is just like, wow.
I continue to think a good half of the coaches are not good. With no cap on coaches salary, this is an area where an owner should spend and get quality. I know not easy. Or spend on more assistants, or technology. I applaud Lurie for that.
Day after a win, hugs all around! Nothing negative from me today.
That might be my top 5 fav eagles win ever…. I’m on cloud 9 today
according to you, we just followed one of the best wins of the past few years with one of your fav wins. What happens when they really start playing well?
TATERGEDDON?
I’m with you. Gotta give Desean and Baker some credit – they made Washington relevant to me again. They were an afterthought for so long in the division behind the Giants and Dallas. Now I can’t wait for the chance to go take another one from them.
what?! Lurie is CHEAP! etc etc etc.
i’m glad that Chip Kelly and all of his changes really stopped that line…
i’d guess that all of the things that Chip wanted carried a pretty big price tag to be paid for by the team (Lurie). It also sounds like we have a very large coaching staff which also costs money.
makes me wonder if everyone thought Lurie was cheap during the AR days just because AR never asked for anything to change or for things that had a cost..
Even under Reid the Eagles had one of the highest paid coaching and training staffs.
The “cheap” thing is just ingrained in the Philly fan’s psyche from decades of bad management by every sports franchise -Braman with the Eagles and Montgomery/Giles with the Phillies especially.
well I think the cheap claim might also have been from not resigning Owens.
nah, that was just stupidity
“I continue to think a good half of the coaches are not good.”
I’d say that most of them -even the “bad” ones- are excellent at one or two aspects of coaching. Lovie Smith is a great example, so is Rex Ryan, heck even Andy Reid (who I think is a good coach).
Being a head coach in the NFL requires myriad skills – Xs and Os, in game management, player development, personality management, media relations, delegation, innovation, scouting, and on and on. When you think about it, it makes sense that there’s only a handful of truly successful head coaches.
correct, but further, think the whole organization has to be in sync. That also means the HC needs to know his limitations, and be able admit(to himself, mostly) where others need to be in charge in each of those areas mentioned above. Egos get in the way(jerry jones?),
could be why smart guys don`t always succeed.
our coach is way player than our players.
With this coach and this team, Cary’s comments to me are like, whatever. If he’s right, they will amend their ways. If he is wrong, they will show him why. This isn’t some disorganized back stabbing team. I’m not getting sucked into all the media attention this will get.
That Cary Williams just loves to talk out of his ass… If only his cornerback play was as good as his talk. The defense didn’t get off the field until there was 2 minutes left in the first quarter; who wouldn’t be tired? Get off the damn field and shut your mouth. Seems like he just likes attention, good or bad. Our secondary is the weakest part of this team, and Cary is a chunk of the reason why. He has his moments and all, but he’s nothing more than the average cornerback that he already is. Calling out the head coach and blaming a teammate is what you would see in a locker room cancer. From calling the defense “soft” last year, to this nonsense, it will be very pleasing to see him gone after this season.
Let’s be honest here, Fletcher is erratic, but you don’t see him giving up the monstrous plays that you see Cary giving up. From Hurns to Hilton to Jackson, he’s given up at least one huge play a game. To me it just looks like he’s making excuses. Players will be asked about it this week, lets see if anyone feels the same way. If not, then Cary Williams is your locker room Diva.
Cary didn’t give up the play Allen did. You call it blaming a teammate but you’re blaming Cary. I don’t have any problem with the comments – they knew what he was when they got him. The defense is terrible – think he has every right to be pissed.
Good thing the 49ers suck.
He’s part of the suck, he has ZERO right to be pissed, Crying and throwing your team under the bus isn’t the way to go. He threw the whole fucking team under the bus saying that they’re not man enough to say the practices are too tough. Meanwhile, he’s not man enough to tell his coach, he cries to the media about it. He had a chance to tackle DeSean after the catch, but he let him out of his grasp. He’s a mediocre corner with a big mouth.
I agree. He’ll sprinkle a few good games throughout the season, but he’s a liability. He’s always calling the team out as if doing so separates him from all the others as a man. It’s just plain dumb and wrong. That “outside sources” comment he made has me ticked and am completely over him. All in all, we shouldn’t have allowed 34 points to the Washington Redskins.
I’m afraid not. Pierre Garcon killed both sides of the secondary, particularly the left side (Williams side)… Even had a 43 yard reception. I’m not blaming Williams, My point is that he shouldn’t be talking because his play does not add up to his complaints.
take a look at a replay of that djax TD. you will see djax on one side going deep with another receiver coming across in front of him. Cary had better coverage on djax than the other DB had on his receiver (don’t know who it was…).
You have to give credit to Wash for that play. its what Chip tries to do on a lot of plays. Get a DB in a position where he has to cover two guys.
i think in that position, Nate was screwed no matter what he did. cover the short guy, and the deep pass is open. cover the deep guy and the shorter pass is open. stay in between and you cant get there in time to break up the pass, but you at least have a shot to stop the guy after the catch.
Everyone is ripping Cary Williams, but he is who he is. His talking is the reason the Ravens got rid of him (also because he’s average at best). I don’t blame him for that Jackson TD. A couple of other factors were at work. Nate Allen (I don’t think he’s a true starting safety in this league) shouldn’t have bitten on the route in front of him since he was help over top. And Billy Davis I think should get the lion’s share of the blame since he only rushed 3 guys. They struggled with pressure from 4 and 5 guys, so rushing 3 guaranteed that a play would develop deep down the field.
Outside of that, gutsy performance by Foles and the banged up Oline. We were down to 1 starter in the 4th quarter and they did well enough to make plays when they needed them. Maclin came up huge and now teams will have to respect Cooper and Matthews. This offense is scary with 3rd string Olineman, think to Week 12 when we should be healthy with a couple games with all of them back.
Don’t blame him? He may not have all the blame but he had every chance to make the tackle Jackson after he caught the ball, so yeah, he has his part of the blame.
I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to absolve him – but then again I don’t expect much from him anyway. I guess I was thinking single-mindedly about what led to the reception. You are absolutely right he should have made that tackle.
That’s the sad thing, not expecting much from him anyway. Which is true unfortunately. Our number 1 corner, the skinniest kid at fat camp
Give Cary credit, a mediocre cornerback makes himself the center of attention after our QB plays his brains out and plays as gutsy as it gets. That win is on Foles, I can’t believe we have to hear shit about Williams and his tired legs.
i think a good topic of discussion for this week would be the question – did Foles carry the team this week?
personally, i wouldn’t give him ALL of the credit. the WRs made some plays of their own. Maclin and Matthews both had GREAT catches.
but on a week where literally every other part of this team was dysfunctional, i think Foles should get credit for winning this game. along with most of the ST squad.
Jenkins and Boykin made some big time plays in the 4th quarter. As bad as the defense was, these two guys did come up big.
Absolutely, my bad, we had some excellent play from our WRs yesterday and that was great to see.
So Mathis was the emergency center, correct? What happens if Molk gets injured now?
Eskin reporting that Kelce going to have surgery for a hernia of some kind. out for 2 months.

GEAGLE was this you? http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2014/9/22/6827113/eagles-fans-fight-video-philadelphia-washington-game
(sorta kidding after your comments last night :P) 😀
anyone see the replay of kelce’s block in the back? i find it odd that the ref that was standing RIGHT THERE didn’t throw a flag. You can see him in the gif near the end of the play, when kelce pushes the guy.

from this angle, it looks like kelce blocked him from the side. they were side by side, after all…
i’m also guessing that kelce was pretty winded by that point and was probably going to have to stop running with the play. gave his guy one last push instead of letting him run down maclin.
Kelce with sports hernia…out a couple months…say it ain’t so!
Time to find OL help ASAP.
