Thoughts on Chip’s Thoughts

I love Chip Kelly. I believe in him and think he is a brilliant football coach. So I was interested to get his reaction to Sunday’s debacle.

PE.com has his press conference.

I agree with a lot of what he said. The biggest problem on Sunday is that there wasn’t just one problem. The offense was like Whac-A-Mole. Solve one thing and the next thing goes wrong. There were literally only a handful of plays all day when all 11 offensive players did their job correctly at the same time.

The OL took turns missing blocks.

Shady and the TEs missed blocks.

Coop dropped the TD catch.

There were 2 fumbles.

Foles made bad decisions.

Foles made poor throws.

Who on offense had a legitimately good game? Jeremy Maclin and Jordan Matthews might be the only 2. Clearly that isn’t a formula for success.

Kelly talked about how he thinks things can be fixed, and I think he’s right. The offense has been erratic this year, but was the #1 scoring group in the NFL going into the game. Let’s not act like yesterday’s struggles have been happening all year long. I know the offense has been sloppy, but there is a big difference between sloppy and awful.

I do disagree with Chip in regard to one specific area. He talked about how the running game was struggling no matter who was in the game. He said this was due to poor blocking. I don’t think anyone disagrees with that. Just look at this pick from Fran Duffy’s All-22 breakdown for PE.com and you can see the issue.

Yikes.

That said, McCoy is still a dancer by nature. Sproles hits the hole hard and is a natural N-S runner. I do think it would be wise to mix in more runs with Sproles. I’m not telling you that Sproles is going to get 5 yards a carry, but he might get 3 to 4 yards more consistently. And you just mix him in a bit. Shady is still the starter and key RB.

One other area I wish someone would talk to Chip about or that he would expand on is getting the ball to Shady in space. The Eagles have tried to throw him screens and even quick screens to the outside, but defenses can see these plays coming a mile away right now. Just line Shady up outside and let him run a vertical route. Line him up outside and bring him around on a fly sweep. Hand him the ball or fake to him. Line Shady up in the slot and see if he can get open on a drag route.

As much as you want to run the ball, you really want to feed it to McCoy since he is your best offensive player. If you do move him around creatively, that let’s you mix in Sproles at RB some more.

I do give Kelly credit for trying to be creative during the game. He ran from under Center and from the Pistol in the 2nd half. McCoy looked more effective since he was more downhill in those formations.

* * * * *

Jimmy Bama decided to rip on Riley Cooper. This is completely fair. Coop has dropped some passes this year and in the past. He must deliver better results. I don’t think he’s in trouble of losing his job to Jordan Matthews quite yet, but Coop needs to get going. He started slow last year before heating up. Maybe that will happen this season as well.

It better for his sake.

Riley Cooper is basically the WR version of Alex Henery with extra unpleasantness thrown in to the mix. It would be nice if Huff could manage to steal his job, as unlikely as it seems right now.

I be honest, Kelce was the TE I wanted last year.

Also the fact that he was a Bearcat TE just sealed the deal

  7. 7 D3FB said at 9:58 AM on September 30th, 2014:

Yea, I’m with you. I saw him as the natural successor to Celek, with Casey already on board to play the F-TE. Plus Flex TE’s can be found later in the draft as role players. You just don’t find Y-TE’s who have both plus blocking and receiving skills.

Actually liked him a lot in last years draft. He’s like a bull in a china shop on tape.

just watched KC’s NT play fullback in a play action goal line play. I think CK had a bad game as much as anyone else. Would be interesting if we put allen and big benny logan in as full back and got 2 yds that way. Feels like something CK would do and something that is being done around the league.

Reids offense looks very CK tonight.

-he paid himself amongst the top 5 in the league. hardly backed it up. (his win/loss is a hair above rich kotite)
-he paid himself at the top rate constantly low balled his players
-his record wasn’t all that great. goole it. approx. 7 wins over all his years keeping him a hair above the most hated rich kotite
-he was both GM and Coach..and that situation has never really worked for us the fans.
-his pal Mike Holmgren got RIPPPED to Shreads by all time great Jim Brown for RIPPING OFF the Browns franchise
-he down played recievers yet demanded 50+ pass attempts from Donovan McNabb every game
-he assumed the nastiest attitude in every press conference and thus snubbed us the fans ..and we don’t have to like it and kiss his fat dum bass at all
    -the wide 9
-he rode the coat tails of great Jim Johnson
-his has more felons in his family than any other nfl employee
-he had a drug addict in preseason camp, covered up the cause of his sons death..he paraded the entire nfl world to funeral for sympathy instead of keeping it private which it shoud have been.
-he let Trotter go over money. he let Dawkins go over money
-he flushed his linebacking group every single year
-his 2012 eagles dubbed “the DUMBEST team in nfl” ..gooogle it
-he lied to us in press conferences
-his sons were amongst the nastiest surburban predators you can imagine and that reason alone to hate his presence

I usually don’t directly attack other posts, but this is a bad comment and merits being called out. It’s nothing but a mix of personal attacks, unsubstantiated accusations, and outright falsehoods.

I had my issues with Reid and he ultimately didn’t succeed in winning us the Super Bowl but he did a lot for this franchise so this level of vitriol is inexplicable in addition to being uncalled for. If you actually HATE Reid, you should probably get some help.

“Andy can coach with the best of them”… I respect the heck out of Andy especially the first half of his era…but the wording on that statement makes it debatable. I will never forget how shocked the panel of NFL network analysts were when Marshall Faulk read Andy’s record against top coaches out loud…his record is rather bully-ish… Stomp all the average to bad teams, and a Not so impressive track record against the other top teams/coaches,,,…

I will say, that offensively, last night was one of the best called games I have seen Andy associated with in years,,,.he was stellar last night head to head against Belliceks defense. I was blown away by the game Andy was calling…. Smith also looked sharp at times. He still did his normal majority dinking n dunking attack…but I saw him throw some decent balls in small windowns to Bowe last night…. Weird how 5 for like 80 yards has become a good game for Dwayne bowe,,. His stats were supposed to go thru the roof when ass happy Andy arrived. Instead he took a nose dive

I know points, not sure about yards.

  37. 37 Sean Stott said at 10:54 PM on September 29th, 2014:

Can’t wait for Huff to get better and play. Get him and Jordan as the #2 and #3 WRs, don’t care how they do it. Just get Riley Cooper out of the starting lineup.

Why did this guy get paid so much?

I’m more forgiving of the Saints game 3rd down drop than his drop yesterday.

  38. 38 Media Mike said at 5:32 AM on September 30th, 2014:

Cooper really isn’t paid that much. You’ll see him here again next year for another $5 million and then his deal is easy to cut with only appx $2 million of dead money on the 2016 cap. It was a VERY team friendly deal in terms of structure.

Worst case scenario Cooper is the 2015 #4 WR and goes back to being a contributor on every special team.

  39. 39 Gary Barnes said at 11:01 PM on September 29th, 2014:

The problem with Chip is he is throwing the OL under the bus and they are not the total issue with our offense….plus Howie and Chip are the ones who PICKED these OL and Chip told us over & over how they got just as many snaps as the starters and would be ready when they played..yea not quite….

Foles and McCoy are really struggling and have been since Game 1…not Game 4 when the Ol is banged up…they struggled in the first half vs the Jags terribly when the OL was only missing Johnson…

And Chip is struggling as the play caller as well…defenses are obviously loading up tp stop McCoy/Sproles and DARING Chip & Foles to beat them via the pass. Chip keeps going with the same core group of plays and the defenses know what is coming before the snap…we’ve now heard this after several of the games from Eagles offensive players…and the 49ers clearly knew.

Chip better a handle on this, this is HIS offense and if he is the genuis everyone thinks he is, it certainly has been an inconsistent and erratic start so far.

SF has a couple of pro bowlers in that front 7 — luckily they weren’t at full strength. You can’t expect guys getting their first starts against SF to play well. It’s not like they’re playing Dallas. SF is a really good team.

its a team loss. there were plays but no one on the team was playing well.

  41. 41 Insomniac said at 11:19 PM on September 29th, 2014:

No Bowman or Aldon Smith. This would have been horrifying to watch if they were playing.

  42. 42 Anders said at 4:44 AM on September 30th, 2014:

No Bowman or Smith versus no Mathis, Kelce and Johnson?

  43. 43 Media Mike said at 5:34 AM on September 30th, 2014:

And no “Spooky”, Glen Dorsey, Ricky Jean Francois, etc.

This is not the 2012 Niners D by a mile. Our backups failed against their sub-standard fill ins and backups.

  44. 44 Anders said at 6:00 AM on September 30th, 2014:

Spooky is a downgrade compared to Ian Williams.

Justin Smith, Willis, Brooks, Williams is still 4 very good to great front 7 players and rival that of most teams in the NFL.

  45. 45 Gary Barnes said at 11:56 PM on September 29th, 2014:

But as I said it was NOT just this week the offense was inconsistent and it was NOT only when we had several backup OL playing…Game 1 we had every starter except Johnson and the first half the offense stank like dead meat…yes they rebounded in the second half, but have struggled in every game since…

  46. 46 shady25 said at 1:35 PM on September 30th, 2014:

Chip needs to open up that playbook and start getting creative. Nobody is scared of this team offensively. If there is no rhythm then the offense stalls. Get Foles under center some more. Every running play doesn’t have to be out of the shotgun.

  47. 47 holeplug said at 11:50 PM on September 29th, 2014:

49ers kept their safeties deep most of the game. Had only 6 in the box on several 1st downs. Back up lineman just can’t block.

  48. 48 Gary Barnes said at 11:59 PM on September 29th, 2014:

Well, Chip helped pick those lineman that cannot block and supposedly had them ready for the game so….instead of throwing them under the bus perhaps he should take some accountability as well.

  49. 49 Media Mike said at 5:35 AM on September 30th, 2014:

That seems to be the case, so can every member of the team and reporters who fluffed Tobin and Molk all pre-season please be subjected to a public shaming and/or beating?

  50. 50 GEAGLE said at 10:44 AM on September 30th, 2014:

Tobin not being able to handle Justin smith in his first start doesn’t exactly mean the kid can’t be successful..

I don’t know about you, but I hoped Tobin could survive, but no matter how he played on Sunday, I highly doubt his first NFL action would show the best this kid has to offer.

If Tobin is a legit young NFL player! then we will see him improve with every game he gets under his belt. 3 games from now, I would expect him to be a lot different than the player who got dominated by Justin smith Sunday….we haven’t seen his best yet…. I’m not really sure what his ceiling is yet… Can he grow into a capable starting NFL Guard? Maybe, maybe not…. But I am confident that he has what it takes for Stoutland to at the very least, mold into a servicable Barbre type backup.
    ….
Molk actually has game, and he is said to have a capable NFL brain to handle playing center at this level…but the question with him was always all about if he could survive with his lack of size…and if he can’t, is he capable of getting big enough to make it work?

I try to go by the players mantra of it’s never as great as it looks or as horrible as it seems, so hopefully these kids can look better than they did on Sunday…I will say, that this was the first time that I really felt like Molk had no chance with his lack of size…..it would be awesome if Molk can grow into Kelce’s backup of the future???but that looks far from a lock at this point..
    ….
We may have to look towards Oregons Hroniss Grasu come draft time after all

  56. 56 Mitchell said at 2:13 AM on September 30th, 2014:

But it wasn’t a blow out. The final score was 21-26 right? Its not like its offense verse offense.

  57. 57 Mr. Magee said at 12:12 PM on September 30th, 2014:

Actually it is a blow out when you consider that birds’ had not one but two STs TDs, plus a pick 6. Don’t know what the odds are of something like that occurring in a single game, but they are very, very low. Losing a game under those circumstances is even more improbable, and highlights how lopsided the rest of the game really was.

  58. 58 Michael Winter Cho said at 1:48 PM on September 30th, 2014:

  60. 60 Gary Barnes said at 8:39 AM on September 30th, 2014:

Chip said they “got whupped up front” meaning the OL got pushed around and could not make room for the run game or protect Foles well…and yes all those things were true, but what was also true was Foles stunk even when he had time, McCoy could not make any yards even when there was space and Chip called a bad game – not to mention that he never adjusted to what the 49ers were doing all game and found other ways to get the ball into his playmaker’s hands.

  61. 61 GEAGLE said at 10:30 AM on September 30th, 2014:

    ..
Justin smith throwing Tobin out of the way like he was a child
Ian Williams pushing Molk into FOles lap all day

Ray McDonald splitting out initial combo blocks on our zone read..
    ….
offenses simply can’t function when the OL is being consistently manhandled… That’s just a fact.

it’s possible to see an OL play a great game but the QB was just off or WR just dropping balls or couldn’t get separation…. But you aren’t going to see many cases where the OL is getting manhandled but our QB is able to play a great game….

Everyone on offense had a hand in the loss…but our OL was the insurmountable problem. They didn’t just lose the battle. They were thoroughly outclassed..and QBs aren’t able to overcome lines getting so ourclassed

  62. 62 Anders said at 12:45 PM on September 30th, 2014:

There is different between throwing them under the bus and stating facts. Its kind of refreshing having a coach not sugarcoat it completely or you can watch Reid’s pressers with the Chiefs and its the same as 14 years here.

I can never really tell. The OL is awful. They were in the AFC championship last year. They often make something out of almost nothing.

To me it’s like the Friday the 13th movies. Until the Pats are officially out of the running (lose in the playoffs or somehow don’t make it), I’ll always think they aren’t really done.

  68. 68 Jernst said at 11:16 PM on September 29th, 2014:

A few thoughts on our last few plays for the lead at the end of the game. Foles makes an amazing throw on a frozen rope through 3 defenders that hits Cooper cleanly in the hands. And…he drops it by doing what I’ve seen him do a bunch this year…jumping when he doesn’t have to just as he’s about to catch the ball. Ugh. He jumps up and the ball hits him in the stomach area…no need to jump, use your body and shield the defender while concentrating on the catch. Jumping as you try to catch a ball you don’t need to extend for is a rookie mistake.

Shady gets a carry on second down from the 7 yard line and you’ll notice the entire 49ers team dropping into zone. Shady has a free run to the endzone with one 48er defender coming like a heat seeking missile. They make contact at the 1.5 yard line and Shady gets zero inches further because he’s off balance and already falling and going down before the contact. If he keeps his feet under him and drives forward with power he scores on that play…ugh. Add some physicality to your game Shady, you can’t dance and juke in every situation. Shady is too in love with his Barry Sanders like ability. Sometimes adding a power element, especially in that situation is necessary.

On third down, Shady has been getting killed in the media for missing the block. I disagree. Shady makes a conscious decision to drive the rusher wide which he does perfectly. Foles has a completely clean pocket. If he steps up like a veteran QB and throws the ball like a man he completes that pass no problem. Instead he takes the shotgun snap at the 6 yard line, Shady rides his man super deep and Foles, instead of stepping up, retreats like a panicked child and finally throws the ball under duress while falling off his back foot, pirouetting and spinning 180 degrees turning his back completely to the player he’s throwing this. He releases the ball from the 14 yard line. Ugh! If Foles steps up like he should have, he has a completely clean pocket, Maclin wide open over the middle 3-4 yards in front of him, Celek coming wide open in the left corner and a free run to the endzone with no one to stop him if he decides to keep it and run up the middle. 3 easy TDs at his disposal and instead he runs backwards like he’s scared and throws off his back foot while ducking and turning his back to the play 12-13 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Terrible QBing.

On 4th down, watch the LBs. They all, except for one, know it’s a pass and drop into coverage to immediately cover the 3 WRs on the sprint out. The lone LB in man coverage on McCoy gets caught up in the crossing patterns. If McCoy got the hand off there was a clear road to the endzone between Peters and Tobin…ugh. There’s no where to go with the ball initially as Foles sprints out. However, by the time the routes develop, the trailing defender is still yards away from Foles, and all three options are open enough that a well placed ball and a good catch will end with a TD and an Eagles win. Finally, if Foles had even average foot speed, he uses Casey as a blocker and walks into the endzone untouched. Unfortunately, Foles double pumps waiting for someone to come opener and eventually sails an uncatchable ball out the back of the endzone while flying horizontal through the air. Ugh.

Kelly called 4 plays in a row that worked as designed and should have resulted in TDs. Hard to blame him. Cooper drops a perfect throw by Foles. Maybe even the best throw Foles has ever made in his short career. Shady runs like a pussy instead of powering through to the endzone and then Foles let’s the moment get to him and plays scared falling away from the play while ducking and not trusting his arm to place a ball to the corner where Maclin was open.

when you get pressure on the qb he gets those happy feet.

  70. 70 Jernst said at 11:44 PM on September 29th, 2014:

yea i guess this all comes back to the oline. Once the QB doesn’t trust his Oline he starts to develop bad habits of bailing on the pocket and running backwards instead of moving forward and climbing the pocket. So he starts bailing even when they do block well and establish a nice pocket. It’s just against all your instincts to move towards all those big guys trying to kill you. But, it’s exactly what you need to do. Watch that 3rd down play again and see how much space Foles would have to set up if he planted his foot at the 10 yard line and moved forward instead of running backwards. Easy TD if he moves up. Foles has had one game where he moved forward in the pocket and set his feet and that was against Washington. Every other game his bad throws come on plays when he’s moving backwards and trying to throw.

  71. 71 bill said at 8:22 AM on September 30th, 2014:

True, but simply put, Foles has to be better than that. He gets some slack because he’s really just starting his second season in number of starts, but he must get better, because even with a great OL, he’s going to take hits in this system. While it is a run-based offense, the passing element doesn’t involve a lot of max protect and uses a lot more “long read” patterns than teams like SEA or SF use. That’s one of the reasons Kelly always talks about durability being an important aspect of a QB, and why his compliments about Foles often center on how tough he was/is. If he continues with the Kolb-like happy feet, we’ll see Sanchez sooner rather than later. Not going to get too bent out of shape about this game – it’s still early in the season, nothing was working on offense at all, and Foles just came off an emotional game where he took a beating behind a patchwork line, then traveled to the West Coast to play a very physical, well-coached SF team. Not surprising that he developed some happy feet. But it’s legitimate to be concerned about it going forward.

After shady ran the ball down to the one, the play ended with like 6 Niners players on the ground, if Chip wanted he could have hurried everyone up at the line and snapped the back quickly hand it off to shady before the defense could get set like we did earlier in the year on 4th down with Sproles… Instead Chip slowed us down wanting to kill clock… He got greedy and figured he could score and kill the clock…

Hind site we should have just rushed everyone to the line and ran the ball in before the defense could get set, they didn’t have any timeouts to stop it… Then we would have hoped our defense could stop the Niners on a two minute drill…. The way our defense played, we should have let them win the game for us instead of being greedy and killing the clock..

But it’s just silly hind site.. In reality, fans would have complained that the college coach left too much time on the clock if he would have rushed us to the line to score catching them off balance

    RULE 12, SECTION 2
Article 7: Players in a Defenseless Posture. It is a foul if a player initiates unnecessary contact against a player who is in
    a defenseless posture.
    (a) Players in a defenseless posture are:
    (7) A quarterback at any time after a change of possession (Also see Article 8(f) for additional restrictions against a
    quarterback after a change of possession);
Penalty: For unnecessary roughness: Loss of 15 yards and an automatic first down. The player may be disqualified if
the action is judged by the official(s) to be flagrant.

  82. 82 suthrneagle said at 1:04 AM on September 30th, 2014:

there was no flag for an illegal hit on foles, there was no 15 yard penalty nor was there a 1st down given to the eagles.
the major complaint was the lack of punishment dished out to Baker, and the ruling that came from the nfl office spokesperson(Vincent) was that it was a legal hit, which it clearly was not, in response to a request bt the eagles for an explanation.
yet lady brady got the protective flag thrown in his favor…totally un-equal calls for a simalar(but not the same as foles was far more malicious).

  83. 83 suthrneagle said at 1:13 AM on September 30th, 2014:

doesn`t explain why, if he was flagged for an on the field infraction, that he, and his the team were not penalized for said violation(flagged).
So the refs erred twice, 1st by not calling an incompletion initially, and secondly by not following the rule book, if,as you say, Baker was flagged for the hit on Foles.

  88. 88 Anders said at 12:47 PM on October 2nd, 2014:

Our QB got absolutely crushed on a play that the NFL is clearly trying to eliminate, either after the play or clearly as the play was all but over. Have the balls to tell us officially whether it was illegal or not under the rules, and explain it to us.

If Troy’s explanation was official then I am wrong and it’s been done. But it shouldn’t just be the Eagles asking the NFL, and maybe we fans find out or not.

Speaking of rules, my absolute favorite has to be those surrounding the phrase “football move.” It has to be the most nonintuitive, nonsensical, arbitrarily applied “rule” in the history of sport. You see a guy with 2 hands on the ball get it knocked out (for example), only to be told that he really never had it in the first place because he did not make a “football move.” Say what?! But I think you’re right that Kelly wants to keep Matthews in the slot, and that plus blocking from WRs is more important to Kelly than it is to the fanbase at large. And Riley’s been subpar there so far this year, too, though he’s had some flashes. Put all that together, and that’s why we’re seeing more of Maehl and Smith lately.

  118. 118 RobNE said at 8:24 AM on September 30th, 2014:

I think Kelly helped him more than the other way around. On film he leaves a lot to be desired if he’s not getting the ball. He has like 3 or 4 big games a year against bad defenses/secondaries – but that doesn’t help when the defense can lock him down with one CB (ala Saints). That said, Cooper started slow last year so I’m hoping it’s the same thing this year. If not, he won’t be on the team next year. If what I think holds, true, we are In for a big week on offense and a win.

After every 4 games, Chip self scouts the team, tweaking plays that he ran too much the previous 4 games… Basically every 5th, 9th and 13th week we unleash new plays on our opponents… If you look at our trend since Kelly arrived, the eagles are undefeated during the first game of every quarter…this tells me that Chip does a great job of honestly self scouting the previous 4’games, he knows what the opponents are seeing, and he knows what adjustment to make to take advantage of the opponents studying the previous 4 games of game film… This is big, because all coaches breakdown the season in quarters and typically When you are getting ready to scout a team you usually just pay attention to the most recent 4 games…
    ..,.
Chip honestly scouts his own team and his own play calling..
    ..
He looks at it from an opponents point of view, he has a good idea of what the opponents will see when they scout us, how they wil
Attack what we see, and Chip does a masterful job of anticipating how the opponent will play what he saw on tape, and comes up with the right adjustment to take advantage of the opponent…

    Last year:
    ..
First quarter: won against the skins on opening day, then lost the next 3 games…After the 4th game he self scouts our previous 4 games, makes adjustments and the first game of the new Quarter is the Giants game, chips offense explodes for a 36-21 win…

Second quarter: win the first two games against giants and Tampa then loses to Cowboys and the giants… Chip self scouts those 4 games, makes adjustments that lead to a 49-20 offensive explosion against the raiders in the first game of the new quarter…and we went on to go undefeated during this quarter…

3rd quarter, once again we win the first game of the quarter and end up going undefeated during this quarter..

4th quarter…. Trend continues and we win the 1st game of the quarter…
    ..
First quarter of the 2014 is in the books, if this trend holds true, Chip will do a great job of self scouting our past 4 games, he will put himself in coach fishers shoes and do a great job anticipating how fisher will want to attack us after he studies our last 4 games..and he will anticipate fishers adjustments, and tweak our plays to take advantage of how the rams defense us…

So far Chip hasn’t lost a 1st, 5th, 9th, 13th, 1st game of 2015 game… If this holds true regardless of our issues Chip will anticipate Fishers moves and design a gameplan that takes advantage of it, and the Eagles win the 5th game and Chip remains undefeated in the first game after self scouting our previous quarter of games..

Rebounding with a win, so that one loss doesn’t turn into a slump or losing streak… If we never lose two in a row, we won’t ever have to overcome negative momentum….not being allowed to lose two in a row is an attitude…bet you There would be hell to pay in Seattle locker room if they ever lose two in a row… If we are going to be a contender, we need to demand this of ourselves

I don’t at all care how good the cowboys look in September. I’m also not impressed with beating the saints at home…saints are a putrid road team during regular season… No matter how good cowboys look in September, if we have Kelce and Mathis, I would be confident to face any of our rivals….and we are catching a major break that the schedule makes it so that the giants game in two weeks is the only division game we will probably play without Kelce and Mathis….they should both be back for the rest of the division games..tho Mathis could miss the thanksgiving day in Dallas, but I hope to get him that week so he can get the rust off, then have a 10 day break to get ready for Seahawks traveling to philly

Speaking of the Raiders….WTF is the point of having players go thru an entire offseason program of mini camp and training camp, preseason, if you are just going to fire a coach 4 games into the season?..
    ..
They add like 20 free agents and have a few rookies playing, it doesn’t take a genius to know that they probably would need more than 4 games to gel…why would you make so much roster change, if you aren’t willing to give the coach a long enough leash to give all those new players time to gel…

If you weren’t going to give Dennis Allen more than 4 games, you should have fired him after last season..

Why fire him now? If anything, he was doing a half decent job with the rookie QB.. Might be a good idea to give a rookie QB some type of stability…Khalil Mack hasn’t even gotten it going yet… When will that franchise stop being such a joke

I disagree. With CK’s offense, it isn’t about outsmarting the other team. It’s about executing your plays well enough that you beat the opponent. There isn’t magic to it, they only run a handful of plays. When your #1 play, the IZR is not working at all, to me that reeks of poor execution. Fix the execution and you’ll fix the offense.

  156. 156 GEAGLE said at 2:36 PM on September 30th, 2014:

Don’t feel like getting into it again, but look up Kapadia’s all 22 of last season, how teams saw that we kept running that route were our players would cross past each other and slap hands to not let anyone between them.. When it was time to self scout Chip saw that we had been running that a lot, anticipated that defense would be ready for it and cheat to either side anticipating the crossing patterns, so he switched to a different variation where Ertz would pivot away from the side he was supposed to cross to, and it ended up working beautifully for us,..

Chip isn’t trying to trick you… He is trying to anticipate what you will see, how you will defend it, and alter the play to take advantage for how you are prepared to stop it,,, like in this case, pivoting away from the side defense antipitaed and would cheat to… I think the Carfinals game was when this particular example paid off.. ..
    ..
No trickery involved..ljnst anticipating how you will defend us and have the proper counter waiting to take advantage of your adjustment

This is a good week to find out about our coaches and backups.,

Matt Tobin getting destroyed by Justin smith doesn’t really tell us much about what we have in the young man. I believe the kid will be a solid player and has a future here…I’m just not sure in which capacity.. I think he has a chance to grow into a starter, but worst case scenario he should be able to grow into a servicable Barbre type of backup…getting out classed by Justin smith in your first NFL start probably isn’t the end of the world..but it’s important for a kid like him to take big steps forward every week as he gains more and more experience..

A lot went wrong against the Niners..of course most of the problems are all intertwined anyway, since football is the ultimate game, one chink in the armor can set off a chain reaction of problems…especially when you are getting handled in the trenches,,, There is a lot that needs to be fixed from the Niners game.. Coaches will have their hands full this week, and I’m really curious to see how much they can manage to fix in one week…of course getting Lane back is HUGE. It solidifies us at two positions, RT and RG with Herremans moving back where he belongs. Todd at guard also helps that weak interior line and can give Molk a hand against Brockers or Aaron Donald

  166. 166 GEAGLE said at 10:05 AM on September 30th, 2014:

Have to get shady n Sproles going this week. Like Tom points out, get creative and start throwing to them on drag routes if need be. Just get them the ball with enough space to get jiggy with it….

But we have to figure out a way to jump start our run game… As good as the Rams DL is they rank 30 against the run…they also play a 4-3 which isn’t as effective against the run as the 3-4 we been facing.,.

Lane is back, so ATleast the right side will have enough chemistry to hold their initial combo blocks long enough so one out our guys can control the DL, and our other OL peels off and goes hunting for linebackers at the next level..
    .,,
But get creative with Lane if you have to…… If Tobin isn’t helping Jason peters enough on the left side, than go unbalanced line and stick Lame Johnson next to peters.l.if the best back in the league can’t get yards behind Petes and Lane then might as well waive the white flag.

This is also only Tobins second game…Dennis Kelly is one big MOFO and he has been playing for weeks now… He also seemed to have held up better than the other backups….wondering if Dennis can play LG better than Tobin right now? We need our tempo attack more than ever so we can’t play Wade smith, but I hope we are busting his ass every day to try to get him In eagle shape to where we can play him and still play at our tempo….could be a nice boost if a veteran like him is in good enough shape to play two weeks from now.

I do wonder who healthy Foles will be this week. He held his left side a few times last week (sore ribs, abdomen) during the game and then had that right knee sleave put on his knee in the 3rd quarter. Doubt he 100% this week.

As for McCoy, backs who had his kind of career year always have a bit of a decline but I still think he had a concussion in the Skins game that has lingered a bit. It would be nice though if he just hit the hole & went when the Eagles do run plays between the tackles. Charles did that last night perfectly even though he didn’t have a bunch of big plays we was effective in moving the ball.

  180. 180 BobSmith77 said at 10:46 AM on September 30th, 2014:

Two things that haven’t been discussed:

    – Way too many turnovers for this team. They have 9 already this year (4 INTs, 5 fumbles) which is t-31st in the NFL. They had 17 all last year. One of the biggest differences was between Vick/Barkley and Foles was that Foles didn’t turn the ball over. It hasn’t been the case this year though.

I don’t expect Foles to suddenly become Dan Fouts and hit those deep routes especially given the WRs the Eagles have. I do expect him though to make better decisions and do a better job of holding on to the ball. I’m hopeful Foles will starting this week.

As for the defense, they have just 5 takeaways (3 INTs, 2 fumbles). Last year they had 31 takeaways (t-3rd). This is an area where there is a lot more concern because this isn’t a defense with playmakers at LB or the secondary except Boykins and possibly Kendricks. Boykins is only the nickel back though and on the field for less >50% of snaps a game too.

None of the LBs is a threat to pick the ball really except Kendricks and they don’t really strip the ball well either. As for the secondary, Fletcher is a guy who has stone hands and C. Williams is just so-so.

Jenkins has been a really pleasant surprise so far with the 3 INTs but I have to thing he reverts to his career norms and goes back to being a guy who doesn’t pick the ball with any kind of frequency either.

Given the lack of playmakers on this defense and their mediocre at best pass rush, I don’t really see the Eagles’ defense ability to force turnovers improving all that much.

    – The other issue has been penalties. Eagles are averaging 9.0 a game right (29th) in the NFL. Last year they averaged just under 6 (5.8) and were 11th in the NFL.

Way too many stupid penalties so far including flags before the whistle for false starts, etc. Expect some of the holding calls with the makeshift line but this team really needs to cut down the number of penalties too.

This is a talented and well-coached team but one that is not nearly talented enough to overcome a negative turnover differential and being among the league leaders in penalties this year.

  181. 181 BobSmith77 said at 10:54 AM on September 30th, 2014:

For all the pissing and moaning about Foles yet again this week (3 out of 4 weeks now) and the run game, this defense is still the much larger issue.

They have had 1 half of football this year where they dominated and that was against arguably the worst offense in the NFL with a backup veteran starter & very depleted skill personnel.

Yeah Kendricks is out but that is just 1 starter. Jenkins has been an upgrade at S but this is a defense that hasn’t been nearly as sound against the run and is a QB’s dream to throw balls against. Teams are crazy if they don’t challenge C. Williams at least 2-3 times deep a game especially if Allen is safety help and Fletcher can be picked on all day especially if teams are willing to dink and dunk him.

At best, it seems like the defense will be opportunistic, force some turnovers, and keep the opposing team to 17-20 pts. At worst, it seems like this offense will have to put up at least 27-28 pts to have a decent shot to win.

  182. 182 Henly125 said at 11:06 AM on September 30th, 2014:

Our secondary, aside from Jenkins and Boyking, is a big soft spot on this defense. Being “Tall and physical” doesn’t ammount to much when you’re Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher.

With Lane Johnson back! watch Chip used unbalanced lines to get the run game jump started… We used to stick Lane between JP and Mathis… Now we will have to stick JPP between Lane and Todd, and just pound it behind those 3… Stick Celek or Casey over there too if you need to! just get shady to that second level so he can start breaking LB and DB ankles again!!!!
    ..
Too many backups sprinkled all over our line, so go unbalanced line and stick the 3 starters next to each other so you have a 3 man wall of elite blockers who won’t make mistakes and let’s get this damn run game going…leave Molk and Tobin on the weakside away for the play… Or have shady go that way, then cut back to the unbalanced side…

It’s clear we aren’t going to run the ball our normal way, so we have to switch it up and get shady involved…Lane getting back should be BIG!

I’m surprised we didn’t use it this time to at least get Peters and Herremans together or move the pocket to give us more room for a play on the other side. I think the biggest thing Lane will bring is athleticism and getting Herremans back in the guard spot.

  225. 225 Mike Roman said at 2:33 PM on September 30th, 2014:

As pissed as I still am about Sunday’s game, I’m trying to put some things into perspective. Nick Foles still only has 20 career starts under his belt. I can give him the benefit of the doubt for looking so shaky thus far this year. It’s hard to get too down on him when he’s playing behind that offensive line, with absolutely no running game to help him out. Maclin has been his only consistent receiver this year. You got a good game from Matthews last week, and a couple from Ertz, but Cooper’s giving you nothing. Celek is giving you nothing.

I trust that Chip will find a way to get the ground game going again. Shady is too good to be shut out forever. I think the offense will start to get back on track. I know they want to keep Matthews in the slot, but I’d really like to see them put him outside since Sooper Cooper is mediocre. Let’s get Ertz more looks in the slot. Having Ertz on the field at the same time as Celek / Casey. That gives you three weapons in the passing game, and a good blocking TE should you choose to throw.

The defense is the defense. I pretty much expect more of the same this year. I believe they’ll do okay against QBs who aren’t quick decision makers and get carved up by the Kirk Cousins of the world. They’ll be largely average but make plays here and there as needed to keep the team in the game.

I do worry about this Sunday’s game though. We should be pretty pissed about the way we lost the game on Sunday, but I’m afraid we’ll be drained after two very physical and emotional games. The Rams are coming off a bye week too. I think we absolutely have to find a way to win the next two games, even if it is ugly, and get to our bye week. We definitely don’t want to drop a home game to the Rams, but I don’t think this will be easy.

Btw, who told Jason Garrett that they’re actually allowed to run the football? Here I thought we’d have zero competition for the division but I guess I was wrong. I guess I just have to hope that the Dallas defense and Romo’s back can’t hold up forever.

  226. 226 GEAGLE said at 2:42 PM on September 30th, 2014:

Perspective: anointed franchise QB Cam Newton has 50 games worth of experience and everyone seems sold on him… Does he really look 30 games of experience better than Nick?

Bad games for most young QBs are like 150 yards, 3 INTs and a fumble…. Nicks “bad games” are never THAT bad,,, if Nick FOles ever had a Kapernick bad game, or an RG3 bad game, he would have been kicked out of the city of Philadelphia…

Even when things around him break down, and he is having a bad game, a bad game for him is just innacurate, and some indecision.. Even when it’s bad, you never really see him unravel..

  229. 229 EagleEyeNebula said at 3:41 PM on September 30th, 2014:

The problem is people seem to ignore the high variability game to game in football. The assumption seems to be that performance will be approximately their career average, however, the distribution is rarely normal and relying on an average alone ignores the interdependence of all players on the field (both teams), coaching staffs, and the natural variability in all individual performance. I believe eagles rewind last year did a nice job showing how non-normal the distributions of qb’s and the breadth of the Gaussian standard deviation if Gaussian statistics can be assumed.

Actually, the argument goes both ways with him, or any player for that matter. I can use the exact same argument to shred him or praise him. If you want to discuss statistics properly, you have to include all aspects of the distribution, for example if using an average, that includes standard deviation, mode and median. Then there is a question of value, and which measure you think will more greatly impact a given game/season. It is a very complex problem with no correct answers per say.

But Maclin over D-Shawn was the right choice. Deseans playing for the redskins was typical Desean..he got his Homerun, some solid catches, finished with his “numbers”…’that was a close game, crunch time, D-Shawn was no where to be found but he got his stats..,

Maclin is stepping up when it matters, in crunch time, extending crucial drives with monster catches against teams #1 CB, catching key go ahead TDs in almost every game…not only is Maclin doing it, but he is stepping up and doing it in the clutch…that’s what #1 WR do… Last drive, game on the line, QB has to be able to trust you to make big catches to extend drives…what Maclin is proving to be able to do, is what kept Desean from being a legit number 1 WR…
    ….
We haven’t been in any blow outs this year..we had to deal with adversity in the second half of each game…Maclin isn’t dissapearing, it’s when he is stepping up and making his most impressive catches.,

Running like a Beast after catching screens, instead of that self tackling fellow we used to know,..blocking down field like a beast…

Chip seems to have Finally gotten Maclin to reach that level we were starting to doubt he would ever reach.,… That’s going to be huge for us going forward once we get our run game back, Maclin should really go off on teams.

There are one arm tackles that are bringing him down now.

To me the question this year was could Foles avoid too many mistakes (sacks, turnovers) and finish in the Top 10 in most QB categories again.

If Foles could do that, he is a ‘franchise QB’ then. He is middle of the pack in most categories but they have only played 4 games.

    Running Back B:

    78 G, 1219 Att, 5665 Yards, 4.6 Y/C, 40 TDs/282 Recs, 2191 Yards, 7.8 Y/R, 10 TD, 7856 Total Yards, 11 fumbles

Both have been very productive running backs with Running Back B have better production in the pass game but Running Back A having better run production. I would give a slight edge to Running Back B due to his greater versatility and lower fumbles totals.

I really hope that Team A doesn’t continue to realize that if they utilize Running Back A and their offensive line to suit the strengths of their team that they will be a much better team overall.
