Welcome Back Nick

That was a great win today. It certainly wasn’t perfect and the Eagles have plenty of issues to deal with, but any time you play an emotional division game and win…that’s big. It means more in the standings, but it also means more to the people involved. A loss to the Colts would have been “meh”. A loss to the Skins would have stuck with people for a few days.

The other part of this is that Washington played really well for parts of the game. Kirk Cousins made some great throws. Pierre Garcon had a terrific game. There weren’t any tricks or gimmicks. The Skins just executed really well. When you can overcome a good showing by your opponent, that means something.

WAS shut down Shady McCoy and the run game. The Eagles OL ws a mess at the end of the game. You had:

LT Gardner – LG Smith – C Molk – RG Kelly – RT Herremans

That group had never played together. Smith’s only been here for a week and a half or so. With a makeshift OL and no run game, it was up to Nick Foles and the passing game to carry the load. That’s exactly what they did. Foles played his best game of the year. He got the ball to his WRs and they delivered a lot of big plays. The Eagles had 6 more plays of 20 or more yards. Jeremy Maclin played his best game in a long time. Jordan Matthews caught 2 TD passes.

Foles took a major beating and kept getting back up. He made some great throws, but you can argue that the toughness he showed today was the most impressive part of his game. There were several times when I was sure he’d be out of there. He never missed a snap. Foles finally looked like the guy we watched last year.

The Eagles absolutely won the STs battle. Chris Polk returned a KO 102 yards for a TD. Cody Parkey continues to be a touchback machine. He also nailed a 51-yd FG at a key juncture in the game. Darren Sproles almost took a PR for a big play, but got tripped up after only a good gain. And the Skins missed a FG, which led me to say this on Twitter.

Feels great to see the Eagles get to 3-0. Let’s hope Jason Kelce is going to be able to recover quickly. He’s one guy up front that you really don’t want to miss.

On that cheap shot by Chris Baker, the guy he was nominally blocking for was already on the ground when he hit Foles. I hope we don’t lose Peters for another game for sticking up for Foles.

Peter’s deserves a crown for taking on the whole Redskins defense. If the bitch didn’t grab his facemask during the fight Peter’s would have ripped him apart.

Peters landed a punch in his face, which has me worried about a suspension… But he had to do it, you can’t suspend him for it, you suspend him if he doesn’t stick up for his QB

  4. 4 BlindChow said at 6:21 PM on September 21st, 2014:

Peters hurt his team because of it. Even worse if he’s suspended for more games. Yeah, but who cares if Nick gets crushed next week because they play a backup? At least Peters can pat himself on the back for being a “big man.”

  5. 5 Mitchell said at 6:35 PM on September 21st, 2014:

You’re right, just let your QB get crushed and walk away. That is what pussys do. His actions show that those guys out there have each others back. Nick doesn’t have to worry about his blindside because of what he saw Peter’s do for him. Almost everyone here would have done the same thing.

lol, are you that dense? Like the only two options are letting the QB “sit in the dirt” and go up to a guy and hit him in the face… smh

But yeah, he sure helped the QB when he was on the sideline for the rest of the game, eh? You probably can’t comprehend how it hurt the team, and I understand. Emotions can cloud intellectual reasoning sometimes. Happens to a lot of children.

  42. 42 Dragon_Eagle said at 5:31 PM on September 21st, 2014:

Having a quarterback who unloads the ball quickly and decisively in the face of pressure helps keep the sack count down as much as a good OL does. Today at least, Foles was that.

Hope we get our injured guys back soon. Agree on the Kelce loss, that’s big. We gotta be able to run the ball. Some teams will have good pass defenses.
Quick question, would it be worthwile to see if we couldn’t trade Miami for Dion Jordan now? Maybe they’d be more willing since he’s been suspended for a few more games. I bet we’d get a great OLB with Jordan playing for Kelly again.

    ..
I don’t recall Maclin ever playing this tough. He wasn’t a Finesse WR today, he was making some gritty catches

Only team this season to score 30 in every game
Only team to overcome being down 10 in 3 games
Only eagles team to start 3-0 since Super Bowl year

Defense gave up 8 3rd down conversions in first. skins didn’t convert a single 3rd down in the second half

Pope Jordan Mathews coming out party.

Shady and the run game did NOTHING, but FOles and the WR single handedly almost put up 40. See all those passes we were throwing down field, proving we can hurt you with WRs? That could help backup the Niners defense and give our RBs some room to operate after the Niners see how willing we are to keep throwing down field

  58. 58 Ark87 said at 6:03 PM on September 21st, 2014:

I think Maclin is coming around. He had another catch (the one where the guy grabbed him by the collar) where he tried to run though some tackles instead of going to the ground. Add in the sideline catch was outstanding. Most encouraging of all, he does seem to get open consistently in man coverage. I think if he and Foles truly get on the same page, it is going to be really sweet.

If Matthews continues on playing this way (making catches in traffic), it is going to be really tough for any team to shut down the Eagles offense unless they kill the QB (which it appears some teams are trying to do). :-S

Wow what a game, absolutely bat shit crazy. Massive huge brass balls from Foles to win that game, huge performance, should get some idiots off his back for a while! On track for 5200 yards. Hope Kelcy is back soon, is going to be great when we get all 5 of our big ugly’s back up front for the run in.

Defence was poor at times, just could not get a stop in the first quarter, and gave up far to many yards, Kendricks was a huge miss, but we struggled to get our pass rush home and gave up far to many easy completions.

But 3-0 Baby! this time has so much heart and commitment and if we start to play well as all 3 units we are going to smoke some teams!

  65. 65 xeynon said at 8:31 PM on September 21st, 2014:

Bissinger is so full of crap. That article completely ignored the fact that some of the greatest QBs of all time (Montana, Aikman, etc.) had the same kind of laid back, unflappable personality that Foles does, and succeeded incredibly well despite it. The rah rah stuff is completely overrated – guys will follow a quarterback who spreads the credit around, is accountable, is tough as nails, and doesn’t fold under pressure, and all four apply to Foles. Just listen to the way guys like Peters and Molk talked about him after the game today – they clearly respect the hell out of him and will fight for him.

  66. 66 T_S_O_P said at 5:51 PM on September 21st, 2014:

Gotta give Washington credit, they really bring it whenever they play Philly, these past three times we’ve played my heart has been about to explode in the 4th quarter.

Gotta wonder what the future has in store for RG III, another guy that has all the gifts to be special but just can’t stay on the field long enough to naturally ascend to become that player. Cousins looks solid, missed a few throws but he’s come up big for Washington when they need him. He looked pretty meh when his coaching staff was defunct, but while there is still a season to play for now, and back in 2012 when he kept the playoff hopes alive he’s been solid.

Nate had a deep crosser from the other side he had to account for as well. If He goes deep with djax, the other play was open and was going to be a huge gain as well. It was just a well drawn up play by WAS.

I think not having Kendricks hurt. Davis seemed to be using him as a mobile pass rusher a lot of the time. Also the Eagles did have to give Morris some respect. I thought Cox was disruptive, but I agree need to improve the pass rush a bit. At the same time in the first half our secondary except maybe jenkins was terrible. Can we start Caroll and boykin already?

  157. 157 Mitchell said at 9:14 PM on September 21st, 2014:

In defense of the secondary, when you give a qb that kind of time the results usually aren’t good but you are right, our cb’s probably could use an upgrade. At least one of them. If you put a decent pash rusher and an upgraded cb on the defense, I think it would be MUCH better.

  193. 193 stephenstempo said at 9:03 PM on September 21st, 2014:

Dirty hit, pretty sure the runner was down when he even made contact. It’s also not as if Foles was running towards the play he was just kind of walking to the sideline or standing there. 20 years ago that’s the kind of hit that gets your fingers broken the next time you end up in a pile.

I wouldnt be surprised to see him get suspended a game if not a pretty hefty fine is coming his way. Hope it was worth it to lose the game.

    – Tough game on a short week and they are fighting for their season the next 3 weeks:
    vs Giants
    vs Seahawks
    @ Cards

If they lose to the Giants, easy to see them going 1-5 and their season effectively being over.

what’s up with the Pats? I didn’t see it, but how do you barely beat the Raiders at home in your first home game.

The O looks bad, but isn’t it the same offense from last year (AFC championship game), plus Gronk is kinda back.

When Kelce went out, the OL really went flat. More so than when, well, all the other guys got hurt, there was a definite break between what they looked like with Kelce and without.

    Why?

Is Kelce just that good? If so, it is time he receives a little more recognition from the national media.

Is it just a cumulative thing, and three backups was too many?

Is the mental aspect, making the blocking calls?

    Is it just my imagination?

  217. 217 Ark87 said at 8:08 PM on September 21st, 2014:

  222. 222 Maggie said at 1:39 AM on September 22nd, 2014:

Kelce is the CENTER. Most important person on the OLine. Calls plays for the line, gives the ball to the QB, blocks nose tackles and interior linemen, runs 30 yards downfield.

  223. 223 Ben said at 8:13 PM on September 21st, 2014:

Honestly thought it was a Jekyll and Hyde game for Foles… Totally missed Maclin for a big TD, missed Celek and Ertz a few times, etc. His toughness is great, but he’s gotta get more accurate like he was last year. He’s still in a funk and it’s obvious. Hopefully having a healthy line by week 10 can straighten him out.

@shah8:disqus that’s nice for a Kirk Cousins, but a franchise guy has gotta be more consistent on the deep balls.

  226. 226 shah8 said at 8:18 PM on September 21st, 2014:

I never expected better. Look, undertalent tends to make QBs erratic in the way Foles, Fitzpatrick, Cousins, etc. So long as we’re going to have the system help Foles out, then I have ever right to demand that basic screens be done right, your basic outs being thrown right, etc. This game he made a throw to the outside some ways down without too much air. Cooper still had to jump, but, it was mostly right.

Quick little tip. We saw that Foles was rolling to his *left* several times, and made a couple a passes as he did so. I’m pretty sure this is a Musgrave thing, as this was something he repeatedly had Christian Ponder do, and Ponder never could manage to throw properly going to his left…

Those refs today were so bad btw. The block in the back by Kelce was questionable. They ALMOST missed that o so obvious facemask on Sproles. I’ve got a big problem with his timing and his choice of platform. After a huge, gut-check victory, where many of his teammates went down hurt and his qb got beaten up all afternoon, Carey should have kept his mouth shut about his tired legs. The only thing he should have been talking about is his team winning and being 3-0.
If the man has a problem with his team’s practice routine, he should take it to the other guys in the lockeroom or to the coach.

Its a childish and ill timed excuse for as to why he was getting burnt all day. He simply cannot accept the fact that he was never that good and now that he is older he has regressed. He is the type of person that it is never his fault. Priority #1 in the offseason is CB help. Carroll will probably be a starter but there will also be a different face opposite of him. Or maybe Boykin goes to the outside with Carroll in the slot.

I was really hoping this defense would sign Byrd because they desperately needed someone in the secondary who could wrack up INTs/turnovers.

Well, Byrd has a single FF and Jenkins had his 2nd INT already which matches his career-high

Still would wager that Byrd will end up with more forced turnovers but if Jenkins can end up with 4-5 INTs and a few FF (2-3) it will go a long way to helping this mediocre defense this year.
