There wasn’t a whole lot of angst with Eagles fans when Nick Foles went down on Sunday. He was playing pretty well, but an ugly pick-6 left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Bring on Mark Sanchez.

Then came the news of Foles injury and that he would be out most of the year, if not all of it. Momentary frustration was no longer part of the equation, but the reaction was mostly the same…bring on Mark Sanchez.

Part of this is a reaction to Foles and his highly inconsistent play this year. For every time you want to think of a touchdown pass to Jordan Matthews or great sideline throw to Jeremy Maclin or perfect pass to Zach Ertz, you can’t help but think of the fumble against the Rams or the bad INTs in the Giants game or the bad INTs in the loss to the Cardinals. Foles did more good than bad this year, but he made too many mistakes for anyone to be flat out happy with him.

Some wanted Foles benched. Not me. I have written more than a few times that he is a young QB and you have to let him work his way through the issues to see who he truly is. Now the choice is gone and Sanchez has the job.

Another reason that Eagles fans aren’t in panic mode is that we’ve been down this road before. Jim McMahon took over for Randall Cunningham in 1991. Ty Detmer took over for Rodney Peete in 1996. AJ Feeley took over for Donovan McNabb in 2002. Jeff Garcia took over for McNabb in 2006. Michael Vick took over for Kevin Kolb in 2010. Those years all ended with winning records. Only the 1991 team missed the playoffs, and that was largely due to McMahon getting hurt and his replacements being so bad they couldn’t even win with one of the greatest defenses of all time.

There is no guarantee that Sanchez will succeed, but he’s got a favorable situation. I wrote about the win over Houston for PE.com. One of the things I talked about in there is how the OL and RBs took over the game. Think about the TD drive in the 3rd quarter. Les Bowen could have been the QB for that. All Sanchez had to do was hand the ball to LeSean McCoy twice and then Chris Polk twice.

If the Eagles get back to their formula from last year (running the ball and throwing lots of play-action passes), Sanchez can thrive in this offense. Foles was throwing a ton of passes this year as the run game struggled due to blocking issues. Take out the short game from Sunday and the 62-pass game in Arizona and Foles still averaged 40 attempts per game this year. That brought out the worst in Foles.

If the Eagles can run the ball and limit Sanchez to about 30 passes a game, he’s got an excellent chance to succeed in this offense. PE.com got some quotes from Garcia and Feeley about their time as the starter. Both 2002 and 2006 were fun seasons. They didn’t end as hoped, but the team was a lot of fun to watch in those years. The make-up of the team makes this feel like 2006, but that team had gotten off to a mixed start and had to get hot down the stretch to win the division. The current team is already atop the NFC East. I certainly won’t complain if this group can get red hot and go on a 5-game winning streak.

In case you wanted Joe Banner’s opinion on the QB situation…

Too funny.

He announced that he is now open to playing other positions, and that’s when interest in him started to increase and he started to workout for teams, so I’m assuming, teams are working him out as a WR…

He’ll be another Harvin in terms of his skilll set. It’s not that simple to learn the WR route tree, especially when you haven’t had any practice or experience running them. He’s more of a Wildcat, Option, specific player.

  5. 5 SteveH said at 3:39 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Yeah it is pretty remarkable how ‘meh’ fans were about Foles going down. He had a real opportunity to seize the job for good this year and instead he left us still wondering.

Sanchez I think is competent enough to lead us to points, especially if the OL can finally stop getting hurt.

  6. 6 Baloophi said at 4:29 PM on November 5th, 2014:

And not just fans… the broadcast team of Kenny, Moose and Goose (barf!) would only talk about Foster – which is crazy. A starting QB for a division-leading team goes down and all you talk about is the Texans’ starters at CB?

  7. 7 anon said at 4:55 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Sanchez is a clear case of lowered expectations. I think people thought foles was baby brady. He might be, but he got injured at the worst time – especially after throwing that pick 6.

  8. 8 GEAGLE said at 5:13 PM on November 5th, 2014:

I know everyone wants to figure out the FOles vs, Sanchez situation, but fact of the matter is that chip is going to try his hardest to keep both for as long as possible… Best case scenario is probably Mark playing great enough to where Chip can promise him fair legit competition to drive the Ferrari next year, and Sanchez having had enough success to where he thinks he can legitimately beat FOles in a completion. That’s what has to happen to get Sanchez under contract past this year, while enjoying another year of FOles, ATleast….

Fans are going to spend all their time on Sanchez vs. FOles, but Chip and Howie are worried about how they can go about keeping both for one more year…you really need two QBs to contend. Sanchez is much smaller than Nick, he would have never endured the beating Nick took this year…we need both, only having 1 is a BIG BIG problem, even if we get to keep the better one, whoever that ends up being

  9. 9 anon said at 5:30 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Agree. Dynamic of having “2 starting QBs” is going to be interesting. Sort of limits how much you’d ever pay a qb.

  10. 10 Michael Winter Cho said at 8:07 PM on November 5th, 2014:

I had some suspicion Chip felt you could make do with QBs in the way that, for example, Denver used to make do with RBs. Whoever they plugged in that old zone blocking scheme seemed to have success.

He makes some interesting points but that guy doesn’t seem to know a lot about how the team or coach actually function–he just has a bunch of numbers he’s playing with to point negativity towards Philly.

A little further down he posts:
“(Also, I just looked and in addition to Maclin, Kelce and Peters have their contracts up at the end of the year. There’s no way they keep a single one of them on the cheap. There’s a good chance they struggle to be even ranked 18 next year.)”

As eagles fans, or even other people who watch the NFC east would probably know, Kelce and Peters aren’t going anywhere at the end of the year because their contracts were already renewed.

  13. 13 sprawl said at 7:01 PM on November 5th, 2014:

If Sanchez can put together some decent performances I think the promise of a legit competition next year will make things interesting for Sanchez and his agent (who is also Chip Kelly’s agent (who is also Nick Foles’ agent))

Do you take what the Eagles offer, which is not going to be the ‘franchise QB’ money other teams are throwing at their QBs, or take a little more to go start for a potential train wreck?

Keep in mind that Sanchez has already earned something like $56 million in his career so he might value a shot at winning over an offer that’s not significantly higher.

  14. 14 anon said at 7:13 PM on November 5th, 2014:

  15. 15 GEAGLE said at 7:41 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Interesting situation indeed.. Depend what Sanche prioritizes.. He has experienced offensive hell as a Jet he might think he died and gone to heaven Here and want to stay..

For example, Maclin, I don’t think his only motivation is money… He cares about staying here and being a part of this…
    ..
Heck brandon Graham is having a career year in a contract year, instead of feeling great and excited to get bid on in the open market, he sounds like he can’t enjoy his success because he is worried about playing well enough so that he can remain here and be a part of chip bringing a championship. Like in BGs mind, it’s inevitable chip wins a ring here and is busting his butt because he is worried about us not re signing him..
    ..
When you prioritize character and football passion in your roster, you get the type of guys where who pays the most money isnt what governs them…of course the money has to be right, and we have to be in the ball park..but, it would cost the eagkes much Less to get Maclins name on a contract than it would cost the Jaguars to get him to play for them…

Sanchez made his money…who knows, he might love if here

This agent seems to be a big player and of course he has tons of agents who work under him.

But his head has to spin in contract negotiations with the Eagles in the near future. When Kelly wants the extension: Hey, Lurie, this guy develops solid QB to great performances. Make him the highest paid HC in the league.

Hey Howie, Foles put up great numbers. You won’t find that anywhere else. Give him money.

How Howie, look at how Sanchez played. Great QB, have to give him money, won’t find that production elsewhere.

Tommy – before the season started everyone was down on Matthews. If Goode and Long didn’t get hurt, he wouldn’t have made the team.

With the way he is playing now, how confident do you feel with him next to Kendricks? Has he played his way on the team next year as an ILB and Long moves back to OLB?

  18. 18 GEAGLE said at 3:52 PM on November 5th, 2014:

This is a tricky situation because Caseys contract expires.

To clear something up, Mathews isnt backing up Meco, Casey and Acho will rotate and share replacement duties, with Marcus Smith also getting a small role that hopefully increases with each week… This isn’t a case of everything falling on Caseys shoulders, I’m expecting a pretty even rotation between Casey and Acho, who both will be making the calls, because billy wants the MIke making the play calls, Kendricks makes the calls when we are in Nickel and dime..
    ..
Mathews has been solid, exceeded my expectations…

  19. 19 Avery Greene said at 4:03 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Exceeded anyone outside of NovaCare I would think. I think he may have played himself into a backup role next season. It’s a shame he can’t work on his speed, because if he could get a hair faster, he could probably get the coverage thing down better.

  20. 20 GEAGLE said at 4:15 PM on November 5th, 2014:

I wouldn’t be surprised if we bring him back..he is a key ST player.. He knows the defense really well, has experience inside and outside… Curious to see how we go about retaining him…. Do we work out a deal before free agency starts? Casey would probably have to accept a lowball offer in that scenario…or do we go the Nate Allen route, let Casey become a FA, and after the market dies down, if Casey still hasn’t been signed, go back and get a deal done with him? If it’s the former scenario where Casey doesn’t want to be anywhere else and will Sacrafice to stay, it would Prob be a 3 yr extension we can easily get out of….it’s a scenario like Nate where he can’t find other offers so he comes back, it would probably be on a 1yr deal…
    ..
    urgent order of business:
    1) Extend BRandon Graham, don’t let him reach the open market
    2) Extend Maclin, don’t let him reach the open market
    3) Cedrick Thornton deal needs to get done
    4) Renegotiate with Trent Cole so we can keep him two more years in a smaller role, rotating more with the backup OLBs
    5) Renegotiate Cary Williams, you do NOT want to start a rookie CB, and the free agent corner market is non existent
    6) possibly extend Brad Fletch
    7) what do we do about Nate Allen?
    .l,
After all those pressing issues, we have to start extending all our youngbucks, Kemdrick, curry,Boykin,Cox…their extension can wait, but sooner the better

    Agree with 1-3.

On 4, actually Cole would have to be good with a diminished role. As it is, I think BG should start over him right now. Sheil did his review of the game and said his performance for his snaps was ‘remarkable’ and he needs more snaps.

If BG isn’t getting more snaps, I’d say he goes with another team to be a starter. If the Iggles give him a (actual) shot to start, he has said he has a preference to stay.

  22. 22 GEAGLE said at 5:37 PM on November 5th, 2014:

I think we need a 4 beast rotation at outside linebacker. marcus, and Bawin are a lock.leaves room for two. COLE wouldnt get to comeback without understanding it’s going to be a diminished role. Sure he sees the writing on the wall with them drafting Marcus.. In our favor, we have the fact that he may be down to make whatever Sacrafice to finish his career as an Eagle on a championship contender..but who knows….ideally, we rotate Barwin/BG, marcus/COle two wave platoon, like we do with our DL, but that would take a lot of Sacrafice so im not sure we can pull that off, Id be pissed if we lost both BG and COLE tho…going to be interesting to see how the OLB situation plays out

Im rooting for all the Eagles linebackers to keep improving.

I haven’t gotten the same impression ive been hearing for weeks about Casey Matthews.

Hes been in the right spot, gotten some good run, made some tackles.

But Ive seen him get ridiculously juked 3 times to many. Ive seen him get jammed completely at the line of srcimmage on blitzes.

Great effort, has experience and from Billy, knows the defense in and out, but seriously lacking in strength and balance right now.

I dont have any confidence in him because of this. He would be my example of where effort and mental acuity can’t overcome the level of talent missing.

I expect him to get stronger, maybe improve his balance.

But considering he hasnt to this point I dont think his ceiling is very high.

Marcus Smith, has great talent, lacks the mental part right now.

I think you look to get him more involved.

Casey probably stays for some time. but my expectations are that in the short term he gives up some big first downs getting juked out of his mind, and in the long term, he gets cut.

Is anyone just as uncomfortable still about casey matthews right now?

Acho isnt much better, but he is what I would consider solid from a talent perspective, and probably just as acclimated to the defense as casey.

I know casey will play, and Billy beleives in him. and apparently alot of people ahve started to like his play

Im just saying. Im vastly unimpressed and a little repulsed.

I am not a fan of linebackers with no balance. Kendricks had a similar problem last year, but he has shown vast improvements this year.

How he used to fall apparently due to the lack of balance.

the way casey got juked was egregious. is all im saying. it speaks to his lack of talent and I dont think he will overcome it.

he will have good effort plays, but at a time when we need to continue to dominate and get people off the field. i do not look forward to a slot reciever juking the heels off of casey matthews for 7 yards.

  28. 28 Henly125 said at 4:47 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Passing downs usually we will see Nolan Carrol replace Acho and Casey… Those two will rotate series on first and second down, short yardage 3rd down situations…..Marcus smith will have a small role in passing situation when Tight ends are on the field I assume..I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts to have some success and his role grows over the course of these last 8 weeks….
    ..
But initially, we will try our best to have Nolan in the game instead of Casey and Acho when the other team is throwing..

By the time the playoffs role around, I won’t be surprised if we trust marcus to where we see Nolan/Kendrick in Dime, and Kendrick/Marcus in Nichel

Everyone seems to have legit belief in him, Peters and Kelce refrences his swagger….. Sounds like the teams has legit confidence in him, as opposed to fake lip service to the media..
    ..
What a crazy year.. Was thinking about it on my train ride to work, how so much is falling according to my expectations. I expected our first half to be much better than last years first half, but I expected us to once again grow as the season went on, play our best ball in December and go into the playoffs Hot, playing our best ball. I expected our run defense to be top 10, and that by the end of the season, our defense finally getting the respect it deserves…
    ..
So I was thinking how everything was flowing according to what I expected, but then I started to think about all the crazy adversity we had to overcome…that wasn’t part of my expectations…had you told me the first 8 game we would use 13 different OL combinations and our Runningbacks would struggle to get going, my expectations probably would have been much different,…it’s nothing short of amazing IMO, to have overcome everything that was thrown at us, and us still be what I expected us to be….
    .,.
I believed in our defense more than most, I knew we had a lot of really quality ingredients on defense that just needed to grow in the scheme and Gel together, but I’m not sure I could have envisioned us playing up to the 4th ranked run defense, without Mykal Kendrick…
    ..
We have had to overcome so much, and Lady Luck isnt done being a bitch.. But we have the coaching behind us, tons of team character, mental and physical toughness that we gained from having to perservere thru so much adversity this year…what we have overcome, I expect to make us stronger for the playoffs… Your strting QB and defensive leader are now gone, fortunately our entire locker room is practically a collection of former team captains from other teams… Everyone needs to pick it up, step up their games a little more and help the Sanchize make en epic comeback!

Remember, down 17-0 to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game, that Jets team came back in the 2nd half behind Sanchez. He has playoff experience and right now he is driven to be good. I think he can be very effective in this offense, especially with the running game starting to get going.

Here’s why I think Sanchize will be fine:
    – The Jets right now is a destination where QBs go to fail, I don’t even think Brady could help that team (especially with their o-coordinator)
    – Ryan didn’t give Sanchize the weapons we have
    – We aren’t looking at Sanchize as the savior – he has to limit turnovers, everything else will take care of itself.
    – We got a great coaching staff.
    – We are 6-2 after missing 3 starters on the oline, and we got 2 of them back.

I don’t feel like going back and doing the research but he claims he was always at his best when they were running a hurry up For the jets..he compares it to “fastbreak basketball” and he claims THATS when he is at his best…

HOWEVER:… If we sorround him with exactly what FOles had around him during the first half, Swiss cheese OL, no run game…I do NOT think Sanchez could perserver to a 6-2 record the way FOles did…

But, if the OL gets back to a high level, and Sanchez gets to play off a run game, I think we can continue to score 30 a game…but to win with Sanchez, the supporting cast has to be much much better than what FOles was able to perserver thru

Hope fans are appreciating Nolan Carrol and what he has brought to our team.
Majority of Nolans experience was at outside CB. he has transitioned really well inside allowing us to implement a Dime package that has been a really nice addition to our defense….Nolan and the Dime had a big hand in replacing Kendrick during his injury, and Now Nolan and the Dime will have to do its part, to compensate for the loss of Meco…basically, nwe will try to only have Casey or Acho on the field against the run…if we think the other team is passing it will either be Kedrick and Marcus in Nickel, or Kemdrick and Nolan in dime
    ..
for an outside Cb to be transitioning to slot CB/quasi inside linebacker role in Dime this quickly is pretty darn impressive. Still has his mistakes like the Texans running on our Dime on 3rd and 18, but he should get better and better at it with experience…

On top of that, he brings it on ST, KR ability, Gunner ability…Nolan is a capable outside CB with some size, now he can play inside and even a quasi LB role….Chip Kelly is going to value the heck out of this kid going forward. versatility,….CHECK!!!

And he is still at an age where his best ball is prob still ahead of him. Really an under rated signing that will be valuable to us going forward…

That’s tough to consistently overcome. I know Boykin can Jump, but so can the outside WRs who have 5 inches on him

It’s bad enough that teams move WRs around so you end up finding Dez BRyant lined up across from you in the slot about 5-6 times a game… Giving up 5-6 inches every single snap, Week in and week out playing outside CB is TOUGH! And around the corner from the WH is Angeloni’s, with the best muscles marinara on the east coast.

BONUS: About 100 feet from Angeloni’s is the former HQ of reputed mob boss Nicky Scarfo.

I have evidence for this, but I suspect play action would be even more effective this season with more snaps being taken from under center.

Even on the TV feed those shotgun play actions never look convincing.

  63. 63 anon said at 4:58 PM on November 5th, 2014:

it’s interesting to see a guy go away from his system. Probably think I like most about CK. Even though his shotgun, zone read system is certified he’s not afraid to go away from it week after week.

  64. 64 GEAGLE said at 5:04 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Andy would NEVER! It’s a very good sign that chip has such an effective system yet doesn’t have some crazy ego about only using his system at all costs…

But I don’t think how we lineup will change the success rate of our play action…play action is simple, if you are gashing them in the run game, play action will always work. If a team feels that you can’t run on them and they can play your run honestly, than it’s probably not going to be very successful…. Now maybe being under center will lead to more success in the run game, which in turn helps our play action,… But if a team is stonewalling shady when we run from under center, our play action will struggle, just like it does when you can’t run out of the gun

  65. 65 anon said at 5:27 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Agree 100%. It seems like Shady is better running from under center (or so he says) so i’m glad that he really cares about putting people in favorable positions instead of them just not being “system fits”.

  66. 66 BlindChow said at 10:11 PM on November 5th, 2014:

Actually, despite having success with being under center against the Giants, CK went right back to mostly shotgun against the Cardinals.

I think he hates going under center, and I suspect it’s going to be like those games when Andy Reid would run a lot and we’d think, “finally, he’s learning!” then the following week it would be 75% passes again.

Draft speculation is just that, speculation. After the various all star games get played out, a new flavor of the month gets called the best QB in the draft and another flavor of the month tumbles. Logan Thomas was on everybody’s lips for at least a day. What did you think about Blake Bortles before the combine? Did you have a thought on Blake Bortles before the combine?

All it takes is a scouting report or two to question if Mariota is “NFL ready,” and his draft stock could tumble. Stranger things have happened.

Logan Thomas was the flavor of the month his sophomore year. And by about 2 games into his senior year, nobody believed in him anymore. The things that happened with Teddy last year have more to do with physical issues. Tiny hands, not that mobile etc. I knew who Blake Bortles was before the 2013 season, because I’m a draftnik. People who do more than read aggregation sites or watch Mel Kiper Jr. know who players are. Do you seriously think Bortles showed up at the combine and nobody knew who he was?

Mariota is 6’4 225. He’s incredibly athletic. His career TD/INT is 89/12. He’s the top QB in the class.

  81. 81 livingonapear said at 6:23 AM on November 6th, 2014:

Yes, you are a draftnick. I’m not, neither is the other commentor. I certainly believe you knew who Bortles was as you also knew who Marcus Smith was before most people. If you say that Mariota is the real McCoy, I’ll certainly take your view on that over a good portion of people on this site.

Having said all that, drafts still never work out the way most people foresee them. Hell, I don’t even know if Chip still wants Mariota or would consider him a good investment in the first. But I’ve seen players like Brian Brohm be touted by sites like football outsiders as sure things only to see them drop. The same thing probably won’t happen to Mariota, but I’d rather wait until we’re a little closer before I start labeling players as “can’t haves”

When I think of Keachly, the same thought always pops up into my head, last years preseason. I know its only preseason, but I was amazed at how he was always a step to slow for shady and our offense, it sticks out in my head how he couldnt cover shady as a pass catcher… When you are covering shady McCoy even in the preseason, I’m sure the best young linebacker tried hard enough to not get embarressed in man coverage againsg shady…. That insignificant preseason game always stick out in my head, it was one of our first glimpses of a chip coached Eagle team, and I was really surprised at how ineffective Keachly was against our skill position players….hope to wear him down with tempo, and keep forcing him to keep up with Sproles and shady as pass catchers, think they can get free from Keachly as pass catchers easier than as runners this week.
    ..
CONTAINMENT becomes crucial against Can like when we played against KAp…also. Too often last week we had our hands on Fitzpatrick and let him break the tackle and run free…that can’t happen gainst Cam, or he will make us pay a steep price,…when we get to Cam, we have to make sure to get him down, very capable of breaking tackles….Containment, and not letting him break tackles when You get to him is half the battle…

No worried about cam at all. That ankle issue is lingering and i don’t think they want him running as much as RW does. Additionally, RBs / OL have been very poor so i expect us to dominate. In pass D there’s Greg Olsen and Kelvin. I excpet Kelvin to have some circus catches but generally to be ineffective, Olson will be a problem, but that’s ok as I think we’ll get a lot of pressure on the QB.

The interesting thing will be how much Avant can share about the offense and whether any of it will be relevant. I def. think Djax was behind why our offense was less effective against washington.

Hell, even the back up RB is averaging more yards per carry and has more rushing TDs. The QB has taken a beating back there. Now he is hurt. He hasn’t made it through a complete season yet. The whole team is turning it over. The QB is missing open receivers and not seeing the field. He has 10+ INT’s already and he has fumbled without even getting hit. Oh, by the way. This is 2012. Yet the same thing can be written about 2014 minus the starting RB having a couple TD’s. Shady only has 1 rushing TD this year.

We all know the story. Starting QB is not playing well. The team is struggling. Everybody wants the backup. Starter gets hurt…yada yada yada. I can’t believe how close the QB stats are. Below is Vick 2012, Foles 2012, Foles 2014. Only difference between the two years is better coaching, better “team” and W-L column. I am curious to see how Sanchez plays when he has the benefit of a healthy Oline and a Running game and Chip is not calling 40+ passes a game.

-I’m not good at math so let’s see: m = (81-79)/(2 years) = 1 QBR pt/year. Pssh… and people are saying he regressed!? If he keeps improving at that incredible rate, he will just about beat his 2013 season QBR in… 2052. I’d say super bowl is a lock that year. Jerry Jones will have just finished GM’ing a Cowboys team to its 41st straight 8-8 finish and announces immediate plans in the offseason to resign 70 year old Romo to an 8 year $630 million contract.

Fans, or Foles supporters(if it’s needed) are meh about this happening because most(if not all) were never saying Foles is the greatest QB in the history of football. Most of us know what we have in Foles. For those(and there are many of you) who expected the Foles supporters to sit and cry about this isn’t going to happen. Before and after the injury, most understand what/who Foles is as a qb. That opinion hasn’t changed because he got injured.
    ……
This isn’t the same as Allen going down. Allen stinks and the back up might be worse. This is more to the liking of losing DR. It’s going to hurt but it’s the next man up. Sanchez has more experience so it’s not exactly the same as the back up for DR but there are some similarities.
    ……
We also know what we have in Sanchez. He isn’t all of a sudden Marino.
    ……
If P. Manning or Romo go down, the fans cry because of the talent drop from starter to back up. Not the case here. Full steam ahead.
    ……
Its fun to poke at CK running the ball too much. However, I’ll take his play calling over fans saying he’s passing too much. If CK is calling more passing plays, there’s a reason. He’s not asking the 8 ball a question and shaking it up and the it says “pass”. CK has a well documented successful career as a coordinator and coach. I’ll take his game planning over any other coach — or fan.

Good stuff… But IMO, Sanchez couldnt with stand all the adversity FOles endured to get us to 6-2… the QBs supporting cast must be much better than it was the first 8 games for us to be successful with Sanchez,,the OL and run game have to be working for sanchez. Doubt he can hold up, perserver thru what FOles had to endure, and I really doubt Sanchez can withstand the punishment Nick took to get us to 6-2…

The first half of the season, I felt a nice level of comfort having a safety net like the Sanchize on our bench, compared to other teams backups
Like Weeden….that safety net is GONE! We are currently using it. We can not afford to lose Mark to injury, so the OL and run game, not only have to open things up for mark to have success, but they need to protect Mark, much better then they did FOles…Sanchez is a much smaller man, older body, who has more mileage on it. The team around mark needs to rally around him, step up and play at a higher level then they did for Nick..
    ..
Fortunately, we have a locker room of former team captains, believe in the heart and character of this team, so I think Sanchez is going to be great!….but he can’t be asked to carry this offense the way we asked FOles to do in some of the early games when our runningbacks couldn’t get anything going…fortunately, our OL is in the best shape it’s been in since the preseason, and our 3 headed monster RBs are starting to catch their stride…and much of the season is about which teams can get hot at the right time and ride that wave into the playoffs..
    ..
Feels kind of weird to have to 100% root for the Sanchize, but since arriving, I like him much more than I did before, and I do view him as one of us right now…. His swagger should provide a nice boost for this offense, I expect the running backs to go wild Monday, and the defens to continue putting on a show

All good stuff — now — lead us Sanchez!

I suspect a lot of Jet fans have a soft spot for the Eagles, as the enemy of their enemy (the Jints) is their friend.

  134. 134 CrackSammich said at 10:07 AM on November 6th, 2014:

The bonus of having a very QB friendly scheme, or at least being perceived as having one, is that we should be among the front runners for any talented QBs that have washed out at their first stop every single year. This year it’s Sanchez. Next year might be Bradford, Shaub, Fitzpatrick, etc. Personally, I’m holding out for Hoyer the Destroyer.

The only person that would be a detriment to is Matt Barkley.

  135. 135 mtn_green said at 11:53 AM on November 6th, 2014:

Not sure eagles have a QB friendly scheme.

When run game works, and Oline is cranking that’s easy. Bubble screens and regular screens are easy and pad stats, but every team does those now.

  136. 136 Sean Stott said at 11:58 AM on November 6th, 2014:

I think it’s QB friendly. Seriously try to count how many times there were multiple open options this year but Foles simply missed.

  145. 145 Anders said at 1:28 PM on November 6th, 2014:

What has that list of super bad QBs anything todo with Cam Newton?

  146. 146 CrackSammich said at 2:37 PM on November 6th, 2014:

Making the same mistake as when people talk about a Casey Matthews type. Just because he shouldn’t be a starter doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a place in the NFL. The same goes for backup QBs. If you can get one that’s better than the usual Charlie Whitehurst, Matt Barkley type, go for it. Why wouldn’t you want the 25-30th best quarterback in the league as a backup? It’s not like you can double up in the top 10.

  147. 147 Anders said at 3:05 PM on November 6th, 2014:

Bradford and Schaub is not one of the 25th-30th best QBs in the NFL

  148. 148 Michael Winter Cho said at 3:14 PM on November 6th, 2014:

  150. 150 Anders said at 3:36 PM on November 6th, 2014:

Schaub 3 years ago was a top 15-20 QB, but he has completely broken down and cant pass more than 5 yards down the field. Bradford has never been good, no matter who had as OC/HC

  151. 151 CrackSammich said at 10:21 PM on November 6th, 2014:

Who do you see as being the best QB we could pick up next season without giving up a draft pick then? We’re not talking about starters here, which is what I think you’re getting stuck on.

..kind of sucks that they didnt send us to London in 2012, we couldn’t win a home game back then lol…now, the Linc is back to being the homefield advantage that we had been missing for years…

Some of it has to do with the excitement chip brought, some has to do with the play of our players, but also have to tip our hands for the stadium renovations, closing those open areas seem to make a real difference keeping the sound in the stadium

    ..
WTF, they are talking about my boy Shawn Oakman as a top 10 pick? UGH I hate when I follow talented young players for years before they are big prospects, and they end up shooting up draft board out of eagles range by the time the draft process unfolds. So annoying… Arik Armstead will still be an option..for us….but with Meco going down, I think you can pencil kendrick brother as our first round pick, after trading back for an extra pick, Marvus smith style
    .,,
No i wont over react to the QB crap and think the eagles spend a first round pick on a QB

  168. 168 Mitchell said at 2:41 PM on November 6th, 2014:

Can we get Sammie Coates too, GEAGLE? He has been banged up and hasn’t been able to show his potential, so maybe he will fall in the draft. I heard he can run in the 4.3 consistently and is a quick little booger. Also he is a big strong blocker, so says Gus Malzhan.

Is he on pace to graduate? Or is he one of those athletic morons who barely got a high enough SAT score to go to college? But he is also used as a RB and is so a willing and strong blocker which appeals to chip but some are starting to wonder if his physical nature and athletic comparison to Patrick Peterson is better suited to move to safety or CB… 6’2 220lb physical nature, 4.4 speed…

I’m personally hoping that he continues to under produce and cause him to fall out of round 1 which is where his athleticism should see him drafted…Id bet chip and our teachers can polish up that raw supreme athleticsm and turn him into a quality weapon…

I personally believe In his talents, so I hope he continues to umder produce so he falls in the draft like a mArquis Lee . I see some projecting him to fall to round 3’which would b awesome!!!

  186. 186 Anders said at 3:09 PM on November 6th, 2014:

Montgomery fell out of the 1st round after the first few games.

WRs who will be drafted before Ty:

    Kevin White
    Cooper
    Parker
    Strong
    Greene
    Funchess
Coates (has same or more atheltisme than Ty and isnt as straight line as him)
    Duke Williams

That string of players would push him to around the 3rd or 4th round.

If I’m starting the franchise and I need a WR?
    ..
Or if chip would pass on any of those names to take TY?
    ..
If you are asking if I think Ty will be drafted ahead of them, the answer is no, and that’s why I talk about Ty as a target for the Eagles, because he is an opportunity to get a prospect who I believe can be developed into a quality weapon, who would also allow us to draft Mykal Kendrick brother and possibly a safety like Prewitt or a de like Arik Armstead of an Rt/RG like Jake fisher..YES I would rather have two of those players AND Ty Monthomery over every WR you listed…
    ..
But yup yup means I agree with you that those WRs will get drafted before Ty Monthomery..atleast 90% of them.

With that said, I wise person would want to wait and see how these kids seperate from each other at the combine before narrowing things down too much…I’m still fluid when it comes to the kids. This time last year people argued with me when I called Calvin Pryor a first round pick because he was still listed as a 3rd rounder… Kids Aren’t really done rising and falling yet. Lol this time last year either kiper or mcshay had Timmy Jernigan as a top 10 pick lol can’t remember which one it was

  191. 191 Insomniac said at 8:58 PM on November 6th, 2014:

IMO, Green, White, and Cooper are the only ones that are better than Ty. Parker, Strong, and Ty are just a tier below them but would probably be more obtainable for us.

Funchess isn’t even a target in my eyes since he has questionable hands. We kept Cooper/drafted Matthews so there’s that. Strong is a Philly kid, so lets hope he pulls a Kelvin Benjamin and falls very far. Strong and Parker will finally give us that WR that can box out, pluck balls out of the air, and make those crazy catches.

Coates is a gamble as well as Green-Beckham. High risk and very high reward.

Absolutely crushed down block after down block in the zone-option and power attack. Was beaten a couple times in pass protection, but his +6.0 is as good as it gets.

Signature Play: At Q4-8:20, Peters took Jared Crick for a ride five yards down field to open up a big lane forChris Polk to run through.

Everytime I watch other team’s QBs on TV I am saying to myself: maybe we should be lucky to have Foles.

It’s not like that Andy Dalton is a rookie anymore…

he doesn’t kill worms either. We haven’t really had to go through QB development since DMac…Most just bitch whoever it is.

Hate seeing Nick go down. However, the reason I’m excited to see Sanchez is not because he’s just another backup QB. I think he’s a seriously talented QB who had a bad situation in NY who we got off the discount rack in the offseason. Want to see what the guy can do.
