Game Preview – The Boys Are Back in Town

Posted: December 14th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 61 Comments »

Are you ready for the NFC East showdown of the year? The Giants somehow beat the Skins, 24-14, guaranteeing that Washington will have the better draft pick. Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning came through in a big game.

You didn’t think I was talking about the Dallas-Philly game that will take place tonight did ya? All that’s at stake in that game is first place in the division and a more likely path to the playoffs. But if that’s the game you prefer, we can talk about it.

I wrote my preview for

I feel pretty good about this game, but admit my nerves are all over the place. I hate Dallas so much that my ability to think logically becomes erratic. As much fun as it is to beat them in situations like this, it is also a huge relief.

I’m curious to see how Chip uses LeSean McCoy. The Eagles ran wide quite a bit in the first game. That worked well. Dallas may emphasize players setting the edge and trying to contain plays. If so, the Eagles may counter by running inside more. I also wonder if McCoy is mixed into the passing game more. We haven’t seen him on the wheel route much this year. That’s a way to isolate him on a LB.

The Eagles have not had a rematch yet this year and now they have 3 in a row. Chip Kelly isn’t big on holding things back, but that doesn’t mean he won’t have some tweaks to try and keep the opponent off balance. The Eagles were 2-1 in rematch games last year. The only loss came to the Giants in a game where Foles was out and Mike Vick was less than 100 percent.

There is a stat being talked about how the last 7 teams to play Seattle all lost the following week. That doesn’t bode well for the Eagles. It also doesn’t mean anything. Most of those teams had losing records. Others were struggling at the time. We’ll see if pans out tonight. Besides, you have nuggets like this that favor the Eagles…

In the end, the team that plays best tonight will win.

The simple keys are controlling the line of scrimmage and getting good play from Mark Sanchez. He struggled in a big way last week. He needs to bounce back tonight. I don’t see the Eagles holding Dallas to just 10 points tonight so the Eagles offense is going to need to do some scoring.

Just a few hours to go…

Figured the Bills were a good bet at +6.5 today but didn’t see them winning that game.

Need some help though from the 49ers vs Seahawks to get a 1st round bye.

Also, Brent’s brother Garret just went down with an injury. Hope the big guy is ok.

This OL has been underwhelming even since Mathis and Kelce have returned especially Kelce’s overall performance. Johnson has been up & down too. Even Peters has slipped a bit even though he is still the best overall OL they have.

I definitely think they are going to draft a G/T very high this offseason (1st/2nd round).

  18. 18 GEAGLE said at 5:44 PM on December 14th, 2014:

I think we can beat this team without even asking much of Sanchez, let him throw 25 times, and let the OL and our 3 headed Monster Voltron RBs do the rest of the work… My front 7 won’t allow them to put up too many points that we can’t overcome with our run game… Be surprised if we let them score more then 17-20 in our house.

I find it pathetic that well paid experts had the audacity to say that an OL with Ronald Leary and Doug Free could possibly be the best OL in the NFL… How is a line made up of 2/5th PIGEONS, get called the best OL in the NFL? What a joke… They were able to run block well. Hide their pathetic defense and keep it on the bench, hide Leary and Free’s pass blocking Liabilities, and they hid Romo and his habbit of making bone headed mistakes… Basically Demarco and that run game where able to hide their flaws all year, until they met the big bad swinging Cox, the 2nd best young NT in football, and the technician Cedrick Thrnth along with the rest of my front 7 that I spent two years trying to convince everyone that they were going to be really good unit.

Our DL and our front 7 is Dallas nightmare, we expose and bring all their weaknesses to light, and then we Attack tnose weaknesses and make them look like the average group of mutts they have been for the past decade.
There is just no way doug Free, Ronald leary and even the rookie Zack Martin are going to be able to move our DL off the line of scrimmage..
National media has been talking about travis Fredrick, cowboy sophmore center single last year… I wonder how much longer it will take the stupid mornic media to realize we have this 3rd round, 2nd year NT named Bennie logan. Who is Going to kick their prized young centers Ass every time we face them, for the next 5 years? Tyrone Smith is legitmately GREAT. He can win his sure of battles against COLE, the problem is COLE will line up all over the place and Smith won’t always be able to block him… Yet On the other side, the RT Doug Free is horrendous stiffl pass blocker. barwin, COLE, BG can take turns abusing him aLl game… Doesn’t matter who lines up in front of Leary, he can’t block Cox, nor Bennie

We have so much mismatched against their OL, yet their OL is way better than their DL…. our OL should have a huge advantage aganst that DL, we did run for 250 yards on them lol

  19. 19 Raul Estrada said at 6:32 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Hollis Thomas said it best when he showed that all 4 of Dallas’s losses came from 3-4 defenses (SF, AZ, PHI, & WAS) because once your front 3 clog the middle, the other 4 clogs the rest and pressures the pocket at the same time during passing plays.

  32. 32 GEAGLE said at 6:10 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Try to break down this match up in simplis form….
Obviously Romo vs. Sanchez ISNT a premier QB matchup. These aren’t QBs who at this stage can be asked to go out and carry their team to a win..think both QB’s need a lot of help around them to win a game. I highly doubt either QB will be asked to throw 35 passes today unless one team gets behind..

Since ideally these QB’s will be on pitch counts tonight, it’s up to the run game to play well enough to allow the QB to go into game manager mode where he can’t make too many costly mistakes. Now I promise you Dallas doesnthave the best OL in football. I GUARENTEE That! But I would be lying if I said I didn’t respect their run blocking. A guy like Doug Free can run block, but the is complete liability in pass protection..
    So what we have is:
romo vs.Sanchez, both on pitch counts, taking a back seat to the premier running backs, and two highly rated run blocking defensive lines..
if I’m not being Bias, Demarco behind his run blocking. Is just as dangerous right now as shady and our run blocking OL… Both rushiñg units are elite when they are firing on all cylinders
The more these running games work tonight, the less teams can ask of their QBs, the more they can hide their flaws…. Being able to run tonight will be a big advantage tonight..,

So when I see two evenly matched Dangerous run games… Who has the advantages? I think it’s a proven fact and non debateable that our DL and front 7 tonight will be drastically better than our cowboy counterparts, so I assume Dallas run game is going to have a tougher time I posing their will then our run game tonight, an Ornery eagle OL coming off a bad game, shpuld be hungry to block this cowboy DLto smithereens …two great run games when they are operating correctly…The main difference will be:
Our OL can get shady to the second level, making their LBs have first crack at tackling hm…where our DL is so good, that it can eat up the blocks shad, and our DL will be the ones tackling Demarco all game…

If all game long shady is getting tackled by LBs, but Demarco is getting tackled by our DL, that’s going to be a drastic advantage for us…we will provide our game manager much more help than Romo will get, we will ask less of Sanchez, reducing his chances to make mistakes that cost us…
When I look at Sanchez vs, Banged up Romo at his age, I view Romo as the better passer tonight, but I expect Romo to be u dear much more pressure from our Defense, than Sanchez who shouLf have some opportunities tonight to set his feet and complete some passes tonight, p,aying off of our run game…
Because Romo faces a much tougher defense, it sort of evens out the two QBs.. Hopefully our offense builds a big lead early, so we,can protect Sanchez and make Romo starter pressing to force throws needing to make something happen. That’s when we turn Romos turnover faucet!

Then their is always the intangibles… No shot in hell that jerry jones built a stronger, tougher, smarter, selfless, committed, relentless team with more heart and Brains than the team chip Kelly built! No way Jerry jones built a team with more Charecter than chip

  46. 46 ACViking said at 7:15 PM on December 14th, 2014:

    RE: Bad QBs

In the tiff between San Francisco and Seattle, the opposing QBs — Kaepernick and Wilson — have looked mediocre.

Against the Eagles, Seattle and San Francisco made Foles and Sanchez look pretty mediocre.

And Peyton Manning looked worse than that last January against Seattle.

Seems like there’s a good argument that — in spite of all the injuries and clubhouse issues with the coach — the 49ers defense is still pretty darned good. And the Seahawks are on one of the best defensive runs since the 2000 Ravens.
So the performances of Wilson and Kaepy today are more about the opponents than them.
Heck, both those QBs looked pretty good against the Eagles’ defense.
That’s not to say the Birds’ defense is lousy.
It’s to say that SF and Seattle are a cut above. And we seem to see that with the opposing QBs performances . . . at least today.

  47. 47 mksp said at 7:53 PM on December 14th, 2014:

  48. 48 OregonDucker said at 7:56 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Well said AC. I agree. But, Sanchez is the unknown for me. Yeah, I know the argument that the years in NY make him known, but he is a new man in Philly. Reborn in the Chip Offense. Can he man up? We will see today.

  49. 49 Dragon_Eagle said at 7:21 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Marshawn Lynch is just amazing. Why the hell are they thinking of not resigning him?

  50. 50 ACViking said at 7:25 PM on December 14th, 2014:

The problem’s as much about Lynch not wanting to come back to Seattle as management being ready to say good bye.

Echos of Jason Peters’ exit from Buffalo come to mind.

  51. 51 Dragon_Eagle said at 7:32 PM on December 14th, 2014:

I thought that was him just feeling disrespected by the organization. I get it though – takes 2 to tango.

Whatever happens – ship him off to a non-contender in the AFC. Him and Harbaugh, please.

In terms of talent, he’s top five in the entire league. Depending on whether you value agility or power more, he could be higher. His backup’s are good, just not elite. Seattle will still be very good without him, but they will lose something. Frankly, it’s not all that different than us saying goodbye to Desean.
