Dallas Done

Re-lax. That was Aaron Rodger’s advice to Packers fans in September and it is now what Eagles fans can do since Dallas has been eliminated. The thought of Tony Romo making it to the Super Bowl, win or lose, is almost too much for the human mind to deal with.

I’ll probably root for the Packers to win from here on out, but we can all relax now and enjoy the games. The one team we all hate has been eliminated.

Interesting. That would pair Marinelli up with his long time buddy Lovie Smith.

Marinelli got more out of this defense than anyone expected.

Good, Marinelli was a goddamned wizard getting that kind of performance out of those scrubs.

I’m gonna root for Green Bay too but they’re toast against Seattle next week. Rodgers at 100% would have a hard time winning there, playing like he did today they have no prayer.

The technique of holding was mastered by cowboys line this year. Cant believe they sent 3 linemen to probowl…way overrated O and prob an underrated D

  11. 11 Jarock said at 5:41 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Calling that defense underrated is going to far. Marinelli got everything you could expect and a tiny bit more out of a no-name no-talent defense. That elevated them to mediocre instead of horrible.

Corey Redding for the Colts is having one of the best seasons a non QB 34yr old player has had. Dude is such a beast that doesn’t even get mentioned when the colts come up… Having to replace him sooner or later will suck

Sucks to have lost old man Mathis, flying off the edge all jacked on PED’s “for trying to i pregnant his wife with his super sperm” PES, performance enhancing Sperm, awesome excuse Mathis. Lol

Colts are like us, they have a quality offense in place, but they still are missing an offensive piece or two..

  19. 19 Jarock said at 5:46 PM on January 11th, 2015:

  20. 20 GEAGLE said at 5:53 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Huh? You haven’t noticed the top pass rusher in the NFL has been missing all year? He was suspended first 4 games for PED test, claimed he was trying to get his wife pregnant, and during the 4game suspension he tore his ACL, which is why Robbert Mathis doesn’t have any sacks for the colts this year

  21. 21 Jarock said at 5:55 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Serious questions about his arm being shot the last month of the season… What has made him great, his preperation, insisting on taking every Rep, is believed to have worn down his arm.. In one of the recent games, he was said to have not trusted his arm and checked into run plays all night…. Then they said, the bye week has done him well. Not really sure how much I believe you can regain your arm strength with one week rest, but we’ll see

  37. 37 GEAGLE said at 5:50 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Yeah that’s a pretty sucky loss for them…. Two options:
    1) promote from within, someone who will keep scheme continuity in place.
    2) but I’m sure you can get a better name, Highering someone knew, which means starting over, instead of building on this years defensive overachieving..

whats the difference in the way the recent Niners powerhouse team was built, and the way the 49ers were built?
    ..
1 diffence jumps out at me, kind of relevant to chip kelly…. Niners team was filled with criminals, giys who had been arrested multiple times pre becoming a niner, and arrested during their Niner run…. Yet you never hear about a SEAHAWK getting arrested,,,.. It’s hard enough every year with teams getting decimated by injuries, if you are also losing players due to suspensions, you probably ARENT giving yourself a very good chance

Will this choir boy blue, print bring us a championship?? Who knows….should provide some longevity tho as a premier program… I think about all the injuries this year, with lane being suspended for 4 games… Can’t imagine how horrible it woulda e to have lost 3 more key players to suspensions for being a jackass in society,…
    ..
Now that we have built a strong locker room, will we see chip take fliers on cheap low risk, high reward long shots? Would chip bring a troubled kid like Josh Gordon, on a cheap rookie deal if he could get him for a cheap 6th round pick? Or is their no such a thing as special circumstances, stances, no Charecter tolerence?

LURIE and Andy always brought in questionable character guys who needed a second Chance.. So far we saw the first two years of chip building his vision. Interesting to see what this thing looks like after another two years of building, especially now that chip has absolute power. Looked forward to having two seasons worth of Intel to better predict future drafts and free agents, but they through us a major curveball, and we have no way of knowing how different it will be with chip in full control, or will it be business as usual and chip has done everything he wanted all along anyway?

  65. 65 Jarock said at 6:13 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Lurie and Andy did a very good job of bringing in guys who were looking to turn their lives around. I have no problem taking a risk on a guy with a troubled background who wants to change. Not everyone does.

djax was never an issue with off the field stuff and was a perennial pro bowler.

  68. 68 Jarock said at 6:32 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Djax didn’t fit Kelly’s vision of a perfect WR as well as being a knucklehead. He already gave Blount a second chance back while he was at Oregon. I think he’ll at least consider bringing in someone who isn’t a saint, but the player will have to be not only a great player but one who fits Kelly’s vision.

FACT: THE ONLY Losses Nick has come with either:
    A) Nick leaving the field having given us the lead with the defense going on to blow the game
    .
    B) Led us all the way down into the Redzone inches away from a comeback win…giving us a Chance to win.
    ….
He has NEVER lost us a game without GETTING IT TOGETHER in the 4th, no matter how bad he played… I promise that MEANS SOMETHING!!!

Kid is legit, all he does with chip is win…or give us a chance to win at the end.
    ..
Not once, has the game ended and any of us were left feeling that Nick FOles has cost us a game… That MEANS SOMETHING!!
    ..
We have seen chip run his offense with two former experienced top 10 pick veterans in VICK and Sanchez, and they don’t come close to the win ration chip has with Nick FOles, yet sanchez and VICK had years of experience on the young man that a still growing as a QB
    ..

Ertz isn’t a starter and neither is sproles, we did NOT have a very good line this year. Matthews is rookie just like Benjamin so thats a wash.
Olsen is better than Celek, Maclin is better than Cotchery. Shady gets SO many negative plays, I think I would like Stewart better, If healthy. Thats said I do love Shady, just the negative plays Really kill us

Cam Newton isn’t that good and he has proven to be somewhat of a choke artist. I would take Foles over Cam personally but I understand your point. The biggest diff between these 2 Offenses is COACHING, not talent

  89. 89 GEAGLE said at 6:34 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Your decent backüp you want to draft, probably won’t prove to be the decent back up in his first two seasons, so while I don’t like Barkley, or think much of him, it’s foolish to just assume we are done trying to grow him, because he hasn’t provided any instant gratification the next two years. I don’t mind cutting him and drafting a new kid… I just don’t think giving up on Barkley is the lock that most people seem to think…

If you won’t give a QB more than two years, then you are a jackass as a coach for drafting him to begin with

Greg, thanks for the link. It’s a good read. Describes Howie’s role exactly. Might actually be a good thing for the Eagles.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Murray. AP has made it clear that he’s itching to wear the star.

  103. 103 oreofestar said at 6:26 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Look though Boys have 6mil in cap but Melton has a 9mil player option that he will absolutely take which puts them over that cap, if they are making Dez the priority how the hell willthey fit him and a star rb in

  104. 104 Jarock said at 6:27 PM on January 11th, 2015:

I have no idea how Dallas or Washington gets under the cap every year. Voodoo comes to mind.

  105. 105 Greg Richards said at 6:30 PM on January 11th, 2015:

They renegotiate the contracts so that all players’ salaries are reduced to the minimum and the difference is covered by giving the players a signing bonus that is prorated over the length of their contracts. So their cap hit for that year is reduced but their future cap hits increase. It’s difficult to near impossible for them to cut any underachieving high salary player that they have done this with because if they did so all of that remaining prorated SB would accelerate onto that year’s cap(or the next two years if designated as a June 1st cut).

  106. 106 Jarock said at 6:36 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Should have noted I was being sarcastic. Question is, when will it finally catch up to them hard. Already cost the Cowboys a bunch of defensive players from the previous year. Despite the cuts, they’re in just as bad if not worse cap shape this season.

  107. 107 bdbd20 said at 6:38 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Murray, Dez, Williams, Frederick, etc. on rookie contracts. Dez and Murray had monster years looking for $$. Getting Sean Lee back will help, but they’re going to have to depend on some rookies next year.

  108. 108 Jarock said at 6:41 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Real question is whether they’ll be able to figure out a way to resign them all. I expect Murray’s gone but Dez they’ll figure out someway to resign. I love Sean Lee, but he just can’t stay healthy. I suspect Dallas will continue to have a no-name defense because they can’t afford to sign anyone. Marinelli being gone will help.

  109. 109 Greg Richards said at 6:39 PM on January 11th, 2015:

At some point, Romo’s back is going to give out and they’re going to be stuck with a huge cap hit for him with Brandon Weeden at QB.

  110. 110 Jarock said at 6:39 PM on January 11th, 2015:

    Sooner the better.

  111. 111 Insomniac said at 6:27 PM on January 11th, 2015:

  113. 113 Insomniac said at 6:32 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Yes but why do we care? They don’t have anyone else.

  114. 114 oreofestar said at 6:34 PM on January 11th, 2015:

I care because I want them to suffer and lose their stars and Carr is practically uncuttable

  115. 115 Insomniac said at 6:37 PM on January 11th, 2015:

    You are underestimating Jerry.

  116. 116 oreofestar said at 6:41 PM on January 11th, 2015:

I guess but if you tag Bryant that puts you 15 over the cap I wanna see how he gets under the cap and finds room or AP or Demarco

  117. 117 BobSmith77 said at 6:35 PM on January 11th, 2015:

  118. 118 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 6:56 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Well anyways, I just scan, I’ll enjoy it, don’t troll, just will enjoy reading the game ending comments.

  197. 197 Jarock said at 7:26 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Not disagreeing, but that’s the way Kelly and co. want it. They want mirrored safeties who can play zone, man, and support the run last. Ward is like Chancellor in that they’re both extra LBs the way they play. I’d rather have talent and adjust the scheme, but Davis and Kelly thus far prioritize the scheme.

  198. 198 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 7:30 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Its SO frustrating. We really need help in the backend. Jenkins was OK but some people think he was great because we got used to Jaiquawn Jarrett, Curt Coleman, Late Allen etc…

  199. 199 Jarock said at 7:31 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Since we don’t have money wrapped up in the QB position, don’t understand why we don’t take both. Better yet, take Houston who’s the best FA at any position and happens to be one at a position of need for us. Trade for Vjax and sign either McCourty or Thomas. I’d enjoy that off season.

  216. 216 Greg Richards said at 7:39 PM on January 11th, 2015:

In 1981, the Eagles started 6-0. Best team in the NFL.

Then all of a sudden, key players seemed to get old over night.

Birds made the playoffs but were 1-and-done.
    _____________

Watching Denver now, a team led by a guy whose body is older than his age and built around some off-season acquisitions of vets on their last legs, I can’t help but think back to the 1981 Eagles.

The Broncos are old. And I think done.

FWIW, Schefter reporting Peyton tore his quad during Chargers game, has been playing through it.

question for Tommy et al.: how is this allowed? Why does it seem, with some superstars especially, we always hear about injuries after the fact? Didn’t the Rodgers news break late too?
How is this not in violation of the League’s injury reporting rules?

Elway didn’t win those SBs though until the Broncos acquired TD and his ‘Mile High Salute.’ Davis is always one of those overlooked players who people forget who just how good he really was at his prime. Not an all-time great but just so good at so many different things.

Manning would then attack his nearest Broncos’ teammate, stun John Fox, and hit Elway with a steal chair while Neckbeard, E. Manning, and A. Manning joining him. A. Manning would triumphantly declaring that the ‘M.W.O.’ (Manning World Order) would destroy all pretenders to the Lombardi Trophy including their arch rival Brady and Belicheck next week while Simms ranting incoherently & Nantz nonchalantly hyping up the Neckbeard-Brady match next weekend.

  270. 270 mksp said at 7:53 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Just rarely works and negatively impacts your ability to build a team when you sign a bunch of high-priced FAs.

One can be selective (Seahawks have done well for themselves with Avril and Bennett, but neither of those guys were considered top tier FAs to my knowledge), but DEN’s wholesale approach to “improve X” in FA just doesn’t usually work.

Amazing how these cable news shows will constantly say Breaking News, from something that happened hours or even a day before. It’s lost all meaning. Too much info flying around for 60 minutes to remain what it was

  340. 340 BobSmith77 said at 8:15 PM on January 11th, 2015:

If anything, I would argue just the opposite and people are starved for it. Just look at the kind of success John Oliver has had especially when you measure him through social media metrics.

Local TV news is useless (argue you get less informed watching it) and the Cable TV news programs aren’t much better.

Just look at Philly. There isn’t a single good blog or news source that routinely covers City Hall and city politics in detail.

  342. 342 BobSmith77 said at 8:24 PM on January 11th, 2015:

I’ll miss Colbert and I do wonder if he’ll be able to do an extended show. Hell a lot easier to do a 30-minute variety show filled with schtick and their pick of brilliant young writers who were willing to work for peanuts.

  343. 343 BC1968 said at 8:29 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Yep those guys working for peanuts are working their way towards the top, paying their dues. Right now, the guy Jon Stewart has, the guy with the beard who got the Iranian guy in trouble, well technically not his fault..But the one that started Stewart on making the movie, Rosewater..Jason Jones, just had to look up and make sure I had the name right. He’s friggin hilarious, I love that guy and will be interested to see where he goes. He’s a pisser man, love that guy the way he handles the people he interviews. Whether the people are idiots, or they aren’t idiots and he’s being sarcastic with them, just a funny guy, hope to see him move up.

  344. 344 Jernst said at 10:43 PM on January 11th, 2015:

If you like The Daily Show and Colbert, you’d love John Oliver’s show. It’s really great. It’s like a long extended, more in depth version of what Stewart does when he’s going through the headlines. But, like I said, with more depth and information.

  345. 345 MagsMightyMutt said at 10:26 PM on January 11th, 2015:

Colbert could move to Toronto, do his show on CBC. They love satire and many Canadians already watch on cable. He (or researchers) did due diligence during the 2010 Olympics and were worth watching. It’s a short hop to and from New York so why not? Many US networks.cable stations raid Canadian talent all the time, why not reverse the trend?

  349. 349 Ben Hert said at 2:07 PM on January 12th, 2015:

I think shows like the Daily Show are nice, but are also more or less the symptom of a problem than anything else. They serve to point out all the ridiculousness that the 24-hour news cycle has brought us, and how its completely destroyed journalistic integrity.

The problem arises when there isn’t another place that provides a legitimate source of news. Then people use shows like TDS, TCR, and LWT as their sources of news, and they are anything but. And then you get a bunch of misinformed, cynical people who have no idea what the actual story is.

We need more shows like 60 minutes to do boring, in-depth reporting on subjects that do matter. Problem is, 60 minutes doesn’t do those subjects anymore.

A great place to catch good reporting on important issues is VICE news, on HBO, and on the internets. They get really interesting world-wide important stories, and do great pieces on them.

    *sigh*

Luck didn’t make one pass that Ryan couldn’t do. And the worse of the two punt INT definitely was an issue with the arm. Dude was open, Luck had a chance to set his feet after rolling out, and threw a low arc-er that was easy to INT. Russel can throw almost that far while running, and guys like Cam, Rodgers (which you just saw how crucial a good arm is), etc, can make that throw, or at least not so it could be INT-able.

And the passing plan was very conservative tonight. They didn’t really give Luck many chances on anything risky other than the deep attempts.

  393. 393 Ark87 said at 9:36 AM on January 12th, 2015:

It was a terrible throw but I don’t see what you’re talking about with “low arc-er”. It was just a badly under thrown ball that went to a place where only the defender could get it. If he put more arc on it, it would have gone further but taken longer to get there. In my opinion it was just a rushed throw, he was running away from pursuit, took the time to switch his feet which probably made him feel like he had a guy practically hanging on his back. He obviously didn’t have enough oomf on it to throw it in that direction, honestly if he took that same throw and led his receiver to his side of the field, rather than deliver it back across to the middle of the field it may have been a fine throw. Terrible throw no doubt, but not proof of a noodle arm by any means.

  399. 399 xeynon said at 11:53 PM on January 11th, 2015:

I think it’s likely the Cowboys take a major step back next year. With their cap situation, it’s going to be difficult to retain both Bryant and Murray, and even if they manage it, it will require sacrificing both depth and the ability to sign anyone in free agency, meaning it will be difficult for them to make improvements to their defense. It’s also unlikely they’ll be able to repeat this season’s run of good health again. It’s a good day to be an Eagles fan.

  402. 402 Mitchell said at 12:26 AM on January 12th, 2015:

I’d say it’d be naive of the Eagles not to upgrade the secondary even if the other teams in the division were trotting out an army of Freddie Mitchell clones at WR. It’s that bad.

  404. 404 GEAGLE said at 8:01 AM on January 12th, 2015:

It’s Naive of fans to just assume that we will be able to in this week market.
    ..
Tell you right now, they won’t sigń someone just because he is a little better than Cary or Nolan…. If we sign someone, he needs to be a significant upgrade, and a perfect fit for our scheme and culture, with a fair price tag…… I doubt there will be many DBs available who the Eagles view as a perfect fit….

  405. 405 oreofestar said at 8:09 AM on January 12th, 2015:

Why so? If the Eagles decide not to spend that is there choice but its not like they can’t they will have well over 40mil in cap space after a couple cuts I’d kill for McCourty and another Jenkins/Barwin type signing

  406. 406 GEAGLE said at 8:16 AM on January 12th, 2015:

There won’t be many DBs available that we view as significant enough upgrades to pay for, and wreck our continuity.
    ..
If we sign a corner, he has to be drastically better than our corners, not just sign a slightly better corner, a perfect scheme, locker room fit, at a fair price for his talents.
    ..
Eagles won’t go out and sign the best player available, but if they view a player as the “perfect fit”, they will go after him hard…. Unfortunately the projected market doesn’t seem very useful for the Eagles front office IMO

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the quietest free agency we have had so far under chip…. Have a feeling fans will be furious with eagles in free agency This year

  407. 407 oreofestar said at 8:20 AM on January 12th, 2015:

  408. 408 GEAGLE said at 8:27 AM on January 12th, 2015:

I’m not telling you what I WANT, or what I WOULD DO..

There is plenty that I want,,that I don’t believe the Eagles feel the same about.

“Scarred from last year”… They signed the safety I WANTED remember? I am pleased with what they did in free agency last year… Heck, we haven’t even seen the best of Nolan yet

You don’t have a shred of evidence, not. Hint, that would lead you to rationally expect that me thinking we will be quiet in free agency is a false. Nothing the Eagles havedone could lead you to that conclusion… Kind of silly to argue against what I think the Eagles will do, using what you want to happen. When you have no evidence suggesting your wants coincide with how the Eagles view this situatipn and how they play their hand,
    .
I’m a realist… Prepare for a dissapointing FA market… Doesn’t mean I personally agree with it, or look forward to sitting on our hands in free agency

Like WTF you think I’m rooting for the Eagles to do nothing and sit on their hands in free agecy? Of course not…it’s just how I interpret the situation and our interest in WHATS projected to be available in free agency this year.

  409. 409 oreofestar said at 8:39 AM on January 12th, 2015:

Calm down 😛 not saying u know they will do, I have no inside info don’t know what they’ll do I’m simply dusting what I think they could do and I don’t think I’m being unrealistic. Me saying you were scarred by last season is that this time last year you were still talking about guys like Michael Johnson and Jairus Byrd but now it seems after last year thoughts of big name guys have left hype mind that’s all

  410. 410 Avery Greene said at 12:32 PM on January 12th, 2015:

After everything, a Safety with better range and doesn’t bite on all the fakes could improve the secondary by a lot. Or a CB that you can actually leave 1-on-1 and just give the other one help.

We just need 1 from FA. We can’t totally fix the secondary in 1 offseason, or all our holes. But I’d be happy with him or Maxwell.

  415. 415 Anders said at 9:23 AM on January 12th, 2015:

No, just saying that there is different ways to defend against great WRs than just getting better CBs, such as better safeties, better pass rush, force turnovers or better offense (score more or keep the ball away from the opposing offense)

  416. 416 Mitchell said at 11:24 AM on January 12th, 2015:

I did say secondary in general and I agree with you. I guess I’m coming from the angle of, “where do we have the least talent?” the secondary. Theorectically, then, it would be the easiest to upgrade because most players replaceable are there.

  417. 417 Anders said at 2:47 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Was that the game were one of their players ran like 15 yards for a TD while the D made him look like Barry Sanders, too? Argg!

Really blows that we didn’t get to see what Nick could do in the Packers and SEAHAWK games.,

  441. 441 anon said at 11:27 AM on January 12th, 2015:

I honestly don’t think it would have mattered much. I don’t think we would have put up 50+ points on the packers, we were just getting roasted on DST. The DAL / GB wouldn’t have even been close if Rodgers was healthy. Maybe SEA is more of a game, but again we were getting roasted on D so it’s a lot of pressure to put up 30+ on SEA.

  442. 442 Avery Greene said at 12:09 PM on January 12th, 2015:

IMO, I think it would have mattered vs. Seattle. If we put points on the board, it puts pressure on Seattle to score more points. There were lots of plays left on the field by Sanchez that could have turned the game, but the way Foles played earlier in the year – there’s no guarantee he would have made the plays too.

Same thing with the Dallas game. Lots of open plays missed, and then it just snowballed.

In a way, Foles had a bad year this year and having to step away due to injury (and now off-season) may help him mentally. I really think he’ll come back better next year if given the chance. Same with the team, you can’t turn the ball over 36 times in a season and expect to go far in the playoffs.

  443. 443 ACViking said at 12:12 PM on January 12th, 2015:

“If we put points on the board . . . .”
    ______________

But no one’s been putting points on the board against Seattle for the past couple of months.

Carolina’s 17 is the most yielded by the Seahawks in 7 weeks.

You think Foles is worth 2 more TDs against that Seattle team?

    That’s a lot of points.

  444. 444 Avery Greene said at 12:20 PM on January 12th, 2015:

I don’t know. IMO, I look at the QB play in those games and I don’t see anyone that jumps out as playing well. It’ll be interesting to see them matched up against Luck or Brady (more likely the latter).

No, Foles isn’t that level and I don’t know if he ever will be. But if the QB makes the plays that are there, you can beat this team.

    Going backwards:
Cam Newton – not a great season, not a great offense
Rams – not a good offense, okay QB
    Cards – Lindley
49ers – Kaepernick – best one on the list, has looked terrible all year
Eagles – Sanchez, went in the tank
    49ers – same as above
Cards – Stanton – step above Lindley, but ok

Then the week before that, Alex Smith and that offense scored 24 points. Not a great offense, but he’s played better this year than anyone on this list.

  445. 445 mksp said at 1:21 PM on January 12th, 2015:

  448. 448 GEAGLE said at 6:11 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Yeah that day just didn’t even matter. I would sit all our starters if I could re-do that packer game… Curious how much the turf played into it? Brian Dawkins to me has never seemed like the type to make excuses for bad losses, for him to feel that turf hindered us so much, with his past experience there, is something to keep in mind for our next trip to Lambeau… Tho we played in Lambeu the year before, does the wet Lambeau turf make that much of a difference? Dawks reasoning is teams built for speed like us are really at a disadvantage on slippery turf, when you start to slide, you supposed to switch to power football, easier to keep your footing, but that the Eagles didn’t really have that “power” gear to switch to, especially with the state of Our OL… Tho we did switch to Power Attack in the blizzards v the Lions and ran them out of the Linc last year, of courses e are talking two completely different OLs.

Where we are in the team building process, I really don’t get to down on losing to the top teams, we are ahead of where we should be.. Shiiiiit look at where the Jags were, and chip and GUs Bradley started the rebuild at the same time…. Losing to the best right now, doesn’t shock me…. It just kills me when we have an opportunity to play a top team and test ourselves and we don’t ATleast hit them with our best punch… I want to see how our full strength team measures up to teams like Seattle and GB, and iit just sucks to be cheated out of it. Seeing Mark Sanchez loose to the LOB, what am I supposed to do with that?… Games against the top teams are good for our young players, sucks when we play so depleted. For example, AT San Fran and Arizona was supposed to be an amazing opportunity to measure our top ranked OL, yet we ended up playing them with a depleted 3rd string OL…. I can take the Losing RIGHT NOW, I just can’t take the wasted growth opportunities and tests for our young players. I’d much rather lose against GB and Seattle with FOles getting to experienceTHAT level of play. Losing those games with sanchez does nothing for me. No silver linnning…

  476. 476 Avery Greene said at 1:15 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Well for starters the play of the front 7. It’s dramatically improved. The were among the league leaders in sacks and one of the better run defenses in the NFL.

Special Teams was special this season. It won us a few games, and he knows that winning all 3 phases works.

Jordan Matthews looks to be a gem. Solid slot receiver that gave you quite a bit.

The coaches did a tremendous job with the offensive line considering they lost 3 starters for 8 games or more. They still won those early games.

Malcolm Jenkins looks to be solid.

Plenty of stuff that you missed. This is Year 2 and it seems that your suggesting that it was a total failure, that they didn’t have a winning record, or that they’re not moving in the right direction.

  477. 477 Cafone said at 2:26 PM on January 12th, 2015:

On being among lead leaders in sacks: any “Totals” are useless statistics for this team because they run more plays, and allow more plays to be run, than any other team in the league. How were they in sacks per play or sacks per passing attempt? I don’t know. I don’t have a premium account at one of those stats sites. Maybe they were good here too. But totals don’t tell us anything.

Losing starters happens to every team. The Eagles don’t get a special consideration for this. Sure you can say it hurt the offense, but you can also ask why they didn’t have capable backups ready to go if it made that much of a difference. You can also point out that Johnson’s absence was self inflicted. And you can also point out that those offensive line players were back when the season was decided in December.

Sure, Jordan Matthews looks like a good addition, and I think Huff might turn out to be a contributor, but the reality is that Maclin/Matthews/Huff is still not as good as Maclin/Jackson/anyone which is what we were looking at having this time last year.

Jenkins looks “ok”, surrounded by crap. I tend to agree with Tommy’s opinion in the penultimate podcast that his shine wore off significantly as the season progressed.

As Insomniac pointed out below, we do have a better kicker. So I guess there’s that.

  478. 478 Avery Greene said at 2:39 PM on January 12th, 2015:

“But totals don’t tell us anything.”

So are you suggesting our Front 7 didn’t play better this year? They moved the QB off the spot, and with all those extra plays, still were league leaders in rushing defense.

“Why didn’t have capable backups ready to go…”

Please name me one team in the league with that many injuries to their starting offensive line, and they still have a winning record? There isn’t any. Yes injuries are part of the game, but where are all these players coming from? They lost both backup ILBs in the last game of preseason and 1st game of the regular season. Yet with Matthews/Acho who wouldn’t have made the team came in and played well considering their limitations.

Again, how many teams lose three ILBs and still get consistency from that position? There aren’t that many ILBs in the league, let alone on one team.

You asked, “what positives am I missing from the season?” I gave you a bunch and you have a problem with it. If you don’t want to see the positives, that’s fine. But don’t pretend there aren’t things to build off of or that there wasn’t anything to be happy about.

  495. 495 ICDogg said at 2:32 PM on January 12th, 2015:

  508. 508 Alistair Middlemiss said at 2:01 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Daniel Jeremia is pretty clued in to a fair few front offices (including eagles) and can actually judge talent. Mike Mayock is good and has a good handle on where players are generally ranked, and obviously Tommy is the man as well.

Dont worry about mocks till at least after the combine.

  509. 509 Ark87 said at 2:14 PM on January 12th, 2015:

what would be cool if someone did a rough sketch of all the team’s draft boards. way too much work for one person. But if a guy like Tommy made one and kept one up just for the Eagles, it would be fun to follow on draft day, way more fun than the mock drafts which combust within the first 10 picks of the draft.

Would be able to cross people off our list as people get picked up. then when we get to our pick we can look at who we think are our say, top 5 people left on the board.

  510. 510 ICDogg said at 2:14 PM on January 12th, 2015:

A lot of people do mocks but most of them aren’t doing much original work. So the mocks wind up being closer to each other than they are to the way that most teams are actually thinking.

Depends on what’s there. What about another ILB that’s as good or better than Kendricks? Now you have 2 stud ILBs.

I wouldn’t be mad about them taking ILB or CB, I just see how much it impacts a team when the OL is in shambles. Even this year, we pretty much kept on trucking with the back-ups, but I can’t help wondering how good we’d have been if our starters had stayed healthy. Were I a GM, I’d probably draft at least one OL a year–late round OL seem to turn into starters more than most positions.

  527. 527 Avery Greene said at 3:13 PM on January 12th, 2015:

BPA would be nice. We picked for need seemingly last draft and that didn’t turn out super well.

we may also need to think about letting young players play even if they aren’t “beating people out in practice”. Lots of contributions from rookies this year.

  529. 529 Cafone said at 2:48 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Here is my theory on recent Eagles developments… sorry if it goes against the optimism expressed by the majority of the other posters.

Chip Kelly was in a position of power when he went to Lurie this offseason to demand the removal of Howie Roseman. Lurie just could not fire him after two seasons of 10 wins, and Kelly wasn’t going to stick around if he didn’t get what he wanted. It went against Lurie’s best judgement, but he was backed into a corner.

Kelly had become annoyed with Roseman because that jerk know-it-all was a constant reminder of his failures in the draft and personnel matters.

Lurie couldn’t fire Roseman, as he did with his boyhood friend Joe Banner, because Roseman knows too much and he couldn’t have Roseman telling tales out of school about Kelly’s blundering, including Roseman telling Kelly he had to move up in the first round to get one of the players on their board and Kelly’s refusal to do so in the hopes that one of them would slip through.

Guesswork? Yes. But I think I will be close to accurate when everything comes out when Kelly is fired in 2 years. After all, I did very closely guess the events surrounding the Smith/Matthews picks months ago on this board before the details emerged in the last few weeks.

I think Kelly’s Eagles headstone will say “Great coach, should have never been given control over player personnel.”

  530. 530 Mitchell said at 2:50 PM on January 12th, 2015:

  531. 531 Cafone said at 2:56 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Well, I guess we’ll know soon enough. The draft is less than 5 months away, and then there’s what some are calling the best free agency class ever.

If Kelly doesn’t fuck it up, I’ll be the first to admit my pessimism was unfounded.

  536. 536 Cafone said at 3:05 PM on January 12th, 2015:

I love Kelly as a coach. I think that NFL coaching is too much of an old boys network that shuts out new ideas, and was thrilled to get him.

I don’t think he has the knowledge or experience to handle player personnel matters and I think his ultimate control of these matters has hurt the Eagles over the last two years. I think the Eagles lose a lot of talent, and a very useful counter opinion to reign in Kelly’s mistakes by demoting Roseman.

And perhaps at the root of it, I’m an SEC guy. Roseman is an SEC guy. Kelly is a PAC guy. Despite recent bowl results, the SEC is better than the PAC-12. I don’t want to see the Eagles favoring the PAC-12 when both the SEC and ACC put more successful players in the NFL.

  537. 537 Avery Greene said at 3:12 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Ummm, Kelly wants nothing to do with setting up the draft board, or most of the personnel stuff. He wants trust in his scouts and to trust the board.

It came out that Roseman didn’t do either when adversity showed up.

I kind of think you’re way off base on both Kelly and how it all played out. But that’s just my opinion.

“Despite recent bowl results, the SEC is better than the PAC-12. I don’t want to see the Eagles favoring the PAC-12 when both the SEC and ACC put more players in the NFL.”

    Without irony?

I agree. I think Chip failed to realize some of the differences between the NCAA and the NFL. It’s still early in his career, though, so I’m approaching this off-season with a dose of optomism. With the power in Chip’s hands, this is his team to make or break.

  543. 543 anon said at 3:23 PM on January 12th, 2015:

yeah agree – no pro experience at all. Even other college guys Harbaugh and Carroll had prior pro experience. Probably need to cut kelly some slack (me included) and know that we’re in for a long ride.

  544. 544 Ark87 said at 3:52 PM on January 12th, 2015:

I’m not a big optimist on the front office shake up either. The upside just doesn’t seem high enough to me considering the risk of the franchise burning down over all this.

The very best version I can spin this is that things aren’t going to be that different in practice, just in title. It was very important to the Eagles that they hire a coach to coach, not a coach to take over the franchise, like Andy did eventually. Just from a PR perspective they needed that distinction of moving on from past mistakes. And Chip walked away from our offer initially. Then suddenly we meet him one more time and he has a change of heart. Then we pick up a highly respected and high ranking personnel guy in Gamble who happens to be on the same page as Chip, because, you know, the more the merrier, why not? You can never have too many big wig execs involved with your franchise right? Then a few times this year Chip finally snaps and says outright he has the final say on all personnel decisions.

Who knows why Gamble left, it’s possible he wouldn’t commit to this job while pretending he isn’t the GM. Things soured and Chip says the charade has gone on long enough. Lurie decides people like Chip enough that he can get away with making it all official and here we are.

So really the best outcome to me is that nothing really changes at all. Worst case is that there is a serious power struggle that will tear this franchise asunder. I try not to worry about it because nobody really knows how any of this will turn out.

Yeah Talib struggled a bit yesterday at times with Hilton but Davis was great for the Colts. Ditto Revis for the Pats.

If the Eagles have any shot at meaningfully improving their secondary next year, they are going to have to pay and pay $$$ for a CB in FA. Repeatedly have done that during Lurie’s tenure here starting with Vincent and then again with Samuel & Nmandi.

Question is Kelly willing to do that given this defensive scheme and what happens with C. Williams? More and more, I think Williams is back on a reworked deal and the Eagles replace Fletcher via a CB in FA.

  547. 547 Cafone said at 3:26 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Another of my opinions that goes against conventional wisdom: I think Bradly Fletcher returns and Cary Williams does not.

I think Nate was the weakest link, he just isn’t tough or instinctive enough to be a starter on a good defense, the fact that he doesn’t play special teams is telling. A mjority of times that Bradley got beat there should have been safety help over top. I still think that Fletcher would make a good safety.

  556. 556 BobSmith77 said at 3:27 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Also, there would obviously be a larger drop in the quality of play if Sherman goes out vs whomever comes in at the other corner spot. But with that defense and those safeties…I don’t think it would be as catastrophic as people might think

He’s been cross trained at all of the secondary positions, including slot. I’m just speculating based on the roster moves but personally, I think the team likes him at CB. They moved Watkins to safety to replace Wolff, and signed Roc Carmichael to play the backup CB spot. After trying that one out, they signed Prozinski (now way I’m looking that spelling up) as the backup safety and moved Watkins back to CB. I’m not sure if that’s a knock on Watkins ability to play safety, or if they thought he was a better backup CB than Carmichael.

As for unsubstantiated opinions, he’s probably the eventual successor to Boykin in the slot, because I have serious doubts that we’re going to get to keep him.

A rotation in the defensive backfield is 100% necessary. Too many plays — i bet our defense plays an extra game or two worth of games on the season. That’s a lot on veteran legs when our secondary plays 100% of snaps.

  596. 596 Jarock said at 4:39 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Gigantic corners who can also run real fast, and play both man and zone very well are tough to find. I just wish we would prioritize the ability to cover wide receivers before an arbitrary height…like everyone else.

We likely need to turn over 3 spots in our secondary. Could take 3 years to do that long term. So maybe you try to get 1 long term solution in the draft, 1 longer term player in free agency, and 1 stop-gap guy for a year or 2 with a guy like Cromartie. Probably will need at least one band-aid this off season. Which is depressing because we had 4 band-aids over the past 2 years and only improved in one position in the time they bought us.

  598. 598 Jarock said at 4:43 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Yeah, I agree 100%. The 2inches is more important than talent burns me up. I get not wanting a roster of exceptions, but what happened to playing the best players? You don’t draft shorter guys, you don’t sign them, ok I understand that. But, you still should play the best players on the current roster, regardless of height.

I’m torn between doing a one-year band-aid or doing a one year rental on someone who could actually make a difference. Revis comes to mind as a guy who I wouldn’t want long term, thanks to his incessant need to be the highest paid corner in the world. One year rental and a chance to win it all? I’d take it.

true, he’s a guy where if the picture started coming together, you do it. However I don’t think we do it until the front office is sure they have a franchise QB. So if Foles stays healthy in 2015 and has a season like 2013, I think you see us make those sorts of moves for 2016.

DeSean is obviously fast, but that’s pitiful.

They have a lot of their offensive skill players expiring now, but my guess is that the Broncos lock down both Thomas’. Depending on whether Manning stays, they decide what to do.

If he stays, they continue looking short term and resigns Welker, Knighton etc. trying to win the SB.

If he goes, i would think they let Welker go too, only locking down younger offensive players and trying to build further on that defense thye have going, while trying to find their franchise QB, since im assuming Osweiler isn’t that guy. Also letting players like Ware go on defense letting younger guys take over

Having Thomas, Thomas, Sanders and OL players like Clady, Vasquez, to go with a defense fielding Miller, Wolfe, Trevathan, Talib, Ward, Harris, Moore, maybe even bringing back Knighton/Carter. Its a pretty good situation to build long term, considering they kinda have a reputation for selling out to allow Manning to get them a super bowl. Of course if they loose a lot of the players, they’re fucked. but hows that different from any NFL team.

I forgot Franklin, they have to look at him too. I think they can get them back, especially if Manning and Welker goes. If they stay, giving them contracts that rise in pay would be the way to go. Lower cap number while they have Manning, higher when he leaves and they have a cheap QB. Manning counts almost 20 mill towards the cap, you can sign Thomas and Thomas and still have change with that amount if he goes.

Its a sad thing because Manning has been such an influence to the NFL, but I think he should call it quits. Just plainly say the league caught up with his body. He sure locked more than done last night, even with nagging injuries. He couldn’t hit shit.
Even if he doesnt go, if would seriously consider cutting him if I were the Broncos, just to keep Thomas x2 in town. Cutting Manning saves them 16.5 mill according to overthecap.com and it might be the perfect time to move on.

Maybe he’s ben nursing nagging injuries all year, maybe he just got old. Its a dillema for the Broncos, but considering they might be losing a top NFL WR and a top NFL TE, I might be inclined to move on from a QB, not just aging, but in the very late stages of his career. Which is weird to say because im just such a big fan of Manning.

Billy won’t even be considered to be replaced after carrying chips offense all year…

We are growing our defense from the ground floor.. Believe it or not, but I’m sure chip views this years progress by our young Defene as a solid job done by Billy… It’s not good enough for fools with ridiculous fan boy expectations, that don’t understand growth process of a defense, and young player development, but a guy who understands the process and how it doesn’t happen over night, and is rational about what he gave billy to work with…. If you ask chip if Billy’s job is in question, he would look at you like you went tropic thunder type “full retard”

  684. 684 oreofestar said at 5:41 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Yeah I don’t love Billy or anything but he deserves another shot next year and everyone wants his head. He did a solid job job with average talent

  685. 685 GEAGLE said at 5:46 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Jesus Christ, I live in a world where the “genius” fanbase doesn’t even know what solid defensive growth looks like and an impressive young QB for his first 20 starts… What I don’t get is how the fuck did this fanbase get like this? They act like a bunch of fools spoiled by a decade of blowouts and Super Bowl wins… It reaches the point we go down 10 points in the second quarter and half of the donkeys Genuinly beilieve the game is over…. I guess I missed this golden age of eagle football that spoiled us into having these ridiculous expectations for what a good young Qb, and improving young defense, and a team its its second year of the building process is supposed to look like.

  689. 689 GEAGLE said at 6:18 PM on January 12th, 2015:

It’s a stop gap fuckin secondary… At the most you will get two quality veterans.. The other two DB upgrades are going to have to come from drafting and developing them, amd be considering typical rookie cornerback play, it ain’t happening overnight. We paid for stop gap DBs.. They will be im place untiL we draft someone and they are ready to take their job,,, we can cry and bitch for the next 4 months, but it ain’t happening. We paid for 1’Starting DB (Malcolm)… The most you are getting is one more quality malcolm level DB… The other two are coming from the draft and they won’t bd ready to out play the stop gaps we have in place for September anyway…. So someone fuckng join me in reality

  690. 690 anon said at 6:22 PM on January 12th, 2015:

I hear you. My point is that after last year few people (read: fans) and probably players thought we were “rebuilding”, i def thought we were going to be in a position to win a playoff game, maybe better. But i agree this will be a longer process than many (read: me) will want to admit.

  691. 691 GEAGLE said at 6:40 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Heck so did I,… And if you give me our starting OL and starting QB, I still think we could have won a playoff game, but that was because I expected to be strong enough to overcome some short comings we still have to upgrade, instead we were decimated by injuries, a strength like the OL turned into a weakness, when that happens, your weaknesses usually get magnified And its a 6 win year.. Kind of amazing to endure what we did and still win 10 games… chip and Arians had the most impressive coaching jobs this year. Average coaches could never overcome what those two coaches proved this year, and I can’t stand pig face Zona coach

  692. 692 BobSmith77 said at 5:48 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Please. Davis was fired twice previously after his second year as a DC for exactly the same thing that transpired this year. Instead the Eagles are just going to make a couple of positional coaches take culpability as the bag men instead of Davis.

Yes there were some areas of improvement with the defense but you can also pick as many stats where they declined or had no real improvement.

I know you’re angling for Dave Spadaro’s job but it’s hard to see that the secondary took a major step forward this year. I think the D got “better”. We feasted on bad teams, the front 7 was good against almost everyone (few sacks against good teams in clutch time but whatever). But the secondary has been an issue – especially against good teams, so i don’t understand why they played the scheme they played, considering.

Gotta get used to the D b/c i think it’s going to be very similar next year despite those “big game” corners we have. Isn’t that what you called them?

I think we’ll promote Marynowitz, perhaps even to the top spot, but I do think we’ll bring in some guys from the outside. Roseman isn’t in personnel evaluation anymore and Gamble is gone, so they’re down 2 staff members. Plus, unless it’s happened and just hasn’t been reported, Rick Mueller isn’t being considered for the “GM” role so it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s out when all is said and done.

  700. 700 Greg Richards said at 5:55 PM on January 12th, 2015:

They’ll probably try to keep Gase, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Broncos target Sean McDermott if they decide to look outside the organization. Some of their personnel guys(Matt Russell, Heckert) are familiar with McDermott and IIRC they considered him for DC after the Eagles fired him(a big mistake in retrospect although I wanted him fired at the time).

Kind of crappy championship game from a draft prospect point of view. ATLEAST for the Eagles picking 20…. Not many players worth watching today. The Buckeye Defense has a great DL, but I doubt we have interest, so I can spend the time Oregon is on Offense watching the Center Grasu(sucks that he ispaying thru injury but you still see his athleticism), and Tackle/guard Jake Fisher..
