Go Ducks

Apologies to Ohio State fans, but I think most Eagles fans will be pulling for the Ducks. The Chip Kelly connection has made many fans start pulling for Oregon, when their favorite team isn’t directly involved. Oregon is fun to watch and they do a lot of similar things to the Eagles so it is easy to enjoy watching them.

I’m not overly fired up for this game. I’ll pull for Oregon, but really want a good game more than anything.

* * * * *

Jeff McLane is reporting that the Eagles did interview Brian Gaine from the Texans for the open personnel position.

Gaine interviewed for the Bears’ general manager opening earlier this month. He met with the New Jets for their GM vacancy two years ago and was mentioned as a candidate for the same post this year, but he never interviewed. The Saints’ Ryan Pace got the Bears job and Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan is reportedly set to take the Jets job.

Gaine has been in Houston for one year and has apparently become a close ally of coach Bill O’Brien. He was previously the Dolphins assistant GM under Jeff Ireland. He followed Ireland from Dallas where he worked as a Cowboys scout for several years and had the opportunity to work with coach Bill Parcells.

He spent his first six years in the NFL in the Jets’ scouting department.

My preferences for the job are Scott Fitterer (SEA) and Gaine. I think I prefer Fitterer by a hair, but both look like they would be excellent fits for the Eagles.

    ..
Not every team is excited about going the zone read route

  36. 36 Baloophi said at 8:49 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Yeah. I think one of the contributing issues is simply the overall lack of high-end talent this year. One of the things that helped Bridgewater and Manziel “slip” last year was the availability of pure talent at other positions (think how many WRs and CBs had high grades last year vs. this year’s crop… the top DBs this year would have been bottom 2nd rounders). Because of the dearth of overall talent I think that prevents MM from slipping much at all.

  37. 37 oreofestar said at 8:55 PM on January 12th, 2015:

    I can

  38. 38 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 8:57 PM on January 12th, 2015:

  39. 39 oreofestar said at 8:58 PM on January 12th, 2015:

I think he’ll do fine in interviews but if he goes number. 1 it is purely because of the due need because I’m not sure he is a top 5 talent in this class

  40. 40 GENETiC-FREAK said at 9:08 PM on January 12th, 2015:

  42. 42 oreofestar said at 9:13 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Based on my own opinion looking at many of the top guys extensively, my opinion is not the Bible you don’t have to abide by it, but as someone who has watched about 25 or so of his games live I feel it is debatable as to whether or not he is one of the 5 best prospects in this draft

  43. 43 GEAGLE said at 9:00 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Come down to how eager a franchise is to tailor an offense around Marriôtta… Where as Jameis easily transitions to pro style

  44. 44 oreofestar said at 9:01 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Yeah honestly only appeal for him here is Chip and the offense if I’m the Bucs he is just not that number 1 overall kind of talent if you ask me and this is coming from s real Oregon fan

  45. 45 GEAGLE said at 9:07 PM on January 12th, 2015:

You wanna know who drafts Marriôtta? Half the teams with top 10 picks are hiring new coaches.. Pay attention to what teams hire offensive coordinators equipped to install an offense for Marriôtta, and that’s Probably who will try and draft him.
    ..
For example, doubt Wisenhunt trashes his pro style offense with Mettenberger, to go a zone read style with Marriôtta, but if Jameis is availabke, we could see the Titans take Jameis, and give themselves a good shot at being set at QB with Mettenberger and Jameis to groom

  46. 46 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 9:02 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Jameis is a head case with bust written all over him. I would savor him failing but hope he gets it together. Cant believe how many of these kids blow opportunity after opportunity

After what happened with Rice in Bal I would hope to see these teams that did those commercials SHOW that they actually give a shit and not just pay lip service

  47. 47 GEAGLE said at 9:09 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Something to be said about a kid who can function with so much turmoil around him, block it out when he steps on the field, and win every game no matter what crap he was dealing with off the field..

    That’s says something!!!

  48. 48 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 9:10 PM on January 12th, 2015:

  52. 52 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 9:13 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Seemed very biased but if that makes him fall to us I wouldn’t be against it. For now Im going with Foles as our future

27/2 was not fluke in the sense he can run the offense very well. Clearly he will never have that ratio but we need patience in Philly, all the great teams have had that approach and so should we

  53. 53 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 8:55 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Ducks are quicker than Eagles it seems. That should bode well for our “program” next season

  54. 54 shah8 said at 8:58 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Oregon is going to face rule changes in the near future. I can’t imagine that there aren’t other people nunplussed at the defense not being allowed out of base. Plenty of ways to put the thumb on the scale–primarily, I think by calling offensive holding on the WR for the screen stuff.

  55. 55 GENETiC-FREAK said at 9:03 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Eh just get in better condition.. Look at other contact sports with subs.. They actually trying to make it harder by limiting subs to make it a real battle of attrition

  56. 56 shah8 said at 9:07 PM on January 12th, 2015:

It’s not conditioning. They are moving too fast for the defense to even recognize what alignment is set. And it works because they have those easy screens, and those screens work because the non-targets mug their assigned defenders. Call it tighter, and the O offense probably starts getting too many three and outs to be sustainable.

  57. 57 GENETiC-FREAK said at 9:13 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Doesnt even have to be physical condition.. Condition the mind for it.. Moving too fast lol Sheesh man that is an excuse for the slow.. Teams can either hate playing against it or adapt to it.. If they change the rules that just shows they give into the weak n the old school way of playing

  77. 77 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 9:24 PM on January 12th, 2015:

I think they will probably adjust it so whatever he loses could be earned back with incentives, Shady obviously had a down year for him.

  78. 78 GermanEagle said at 9:26 PM on January 12th, 2015:

I don’t actually think it was really a down year. It’s just his cap number is humangous for a RB, even if it’s always Shady in Philadelphia.

  79. 79 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 9:29 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Given the fact that he wasn’t the best RB, it was a down year for Shady.

Also the fact that a great RB is devalued and not really that effective without a decent passer and I think he earned a paycut

Where the fuck was he in the passing game? Thats what I wanna know

  126. 126 shah8 said at 10:04 PM on January 12th, 2015:

My real problem with Luck is that the hyperbolism around him fucks him, and fucks whatever team he’s on. Pretending that he’s doing it all himself drives the selection of top offensive talent. But Luck can’t make that truly pay. He would work far better as a QB that maximizes the offense of a defensive team.

Im pissed at the Colts for rolling over and taking it against the cowboys but will now have to root for them to beat the Bellicheats

  155. 155 truehaynes said at 10:52 PM on January 12th, 2015:

  156. 156 truehaynes said at 10:53 PM on January 12th, 2015:

Kid is obviously good at handling big game stress. Put him behind foles and let h develop. Maybe even use him on some packages as an offensive weapon. He’s like Brandon Jacobs size and is obviously pretty quick. Heck see of he has hands and possibly put him in as a te/HB/qb. Have cardale out wide to.the right. Motion mack across formation from left to right and give him the handoff and let him run. Establish this as a play then incorporatethe pitch back to.Jones who can then throw. Come back in this formations dn fake the handoff to.Mac and either run/pass to the left side. So many possibilities with a kid like.this. and of he proves to be better than foles than were upgraded at qb in the long run

  182. 182 Baloophi said at 10:38 PM on January 12th, 2015:

No – the “hero quotient” is VERY important in scouting. Aaron Rodgers had a chance to beat #1 USC his senior year with 1:47 left in the game and 1st and goal. He threw two incomplete passes and took a sack and they lost. That’s why 31 times were wise to “stay away.” Stupid Green Bay.

  183. 183 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 10:44 PM on January 12th, 2015:

  184. 184 Baloophi said at 10:47 PM on January 12th, 2015:

He’s like Brandon Jacobs size and is obviously pretty quick. Heck see of he has hands and possibly put him in as a te/HB/qb. Have cardale out wide to.the right. Motion mack across formation from left to right and give him the handoff and let him run. Establish this as a play then incorporatethe pitch back to.Jones who can then throw. Come back in this formations dn fake the handoff to.Mac and either run/pass to the left side. So many possibilities with a kid like.this. and of he proves to be better than foles than were upgraded at qb in the long run

  305. 305 Media Mike said at 5:06 AM on January 13th, 2015:

You cannot keep losing playoff games as a favorite and expect to be employed for that long in the NFL. Fox just isn’t a guy to get a team on a title run, so that doesn’t fit with Peyton. Fox also isn’t a guy to coach a team in a rebuilt with a garbage roster (look up his comments as Carolina did that), so that doesn’t fit with Denver if Peyton retires.

  306. 306 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 5:12 AM on January 13th, 2015:

Im more shocked at the complete upheaval, they found a good RB which was all the O needed.

I think they will now be cellar dwellers. Its good for rest of AFC west.

Also Peyton was clearly hobbled and didn’t have the benefit of facing cowboys pathetic D

  307. 307 Media Mike said at 5:22 AM on January 13th, 2015:

I could make an argument that if they keep D and J Thomas using money Manning isn’t earning any more that they could plug in a guy like Matt Moore to compete with Oswiler while they target QB in 2016 draft and still be 8-8 or 9-7 with that roster.

They need to hit O-line HARD in the draft however.

I’d love to see Elway throw a change-up into the hiring process and snag Todd Bowles.

  308. 308 anon said at 12:46 PM on January 13th, 2015:

Doesn’t seem like anyone on that team has heart in big games. See Kam Chancellor take over big games, Lynch, others in the league but I feel like without the QB no one is really stepping up. The Colts aren’t THAT good.

  309. 309 EaglesD3rdandwrong said at 12:48 PM on January 13th, 2015:

I said at the time letting Bowles walk was a bad move, he wasn’t even given a chance here and id good with DBs.

If thats the broncos plan its not a terrible one but if Manning is healthy and still wants to play I think u roll with him and still pick a QB in 1st or second with heavy Oline drafting

It appears I made a mistake responding to your comment with a perfectly reasonable observation. My apologies. My point on missing a guy open in the end zone is that when you have 9 seconds to make a decision, zipping the ball to a guy wide open right in front of you – while impressive – should be weighed against the opportunity cost of not taking the score.

I would think so, though it depends on the severity. If you’re a team planning on taking him and playing him right away, that’s obviously out the window if he’s rehabbing. Then you start looking at coaches / GM’s in terms of desperation. For example, if you’re feeling the pressure from your owner and were debating Winston / Mariota (for some reason… very different QBs) you might go Winston since you can play him right away.

    1 year of postgrad
    1 year redshirt
    2 years on active team

Postgrad doesn’t count against you (its just 13th grade at a prep school), and from the sounds of it he wasn’t doing a Postgrad year with tons of AP credits. If he transfers he would have to sit since he won’t have his degree since he’s only been in college 3 years, so he can’t transfer for grad school.

He’s from Cleveland so he can’t claim distance and family reasons to get a hardship waiver.

If he transfers he has to transfer down or blow a year of eligibility to sit out.

He has two years of eligibility left.

  401. 401 Anders said at 8:26 AM on January 13th, 2015:

haha, I just assumed he only had 1 year left. Unless he wants to be a 25 year old rookie, he has to beat out Barrett this off season and then play great or he might not start again until 2016 and first get drafted in 2017

  402. 402 Baloophi said at 12:03 AM on January 13th, 2015:

  412. 412 Jarock said at 12:45 AM on January 13th, 2015:

  413. 413 Jarock said at 12:44 AM on January 13th, 2015:

Credit Oregon’s defense with forcing the turnovers. A lot of really great hits that would have forced turnovers almost every time. Too bad they couldn’t stop Elliot from running wild. Ohio State was the better team tonight.

THE Ohio State University. Fellow degenerate Vegas-philes will recall “THE Hotel” – a satellite building attached to Mandalay Bay and recently renamed “Delano.” Well, THE Hotel went a little overboard with branding and labelled just about everything in their rooms with “THE”: “THE Pen,” “THE Conditioner,” “THE Plastic Laundry Bag You’ll Barf In Later When Those Eight Jack and Gingers From Craps Finally Kick In,” etc. Anyway, it always reminded me of the oddly-emphatic stress OSU people place on their favorite article…

  424. 424 Jarock said at 12:41 AM on January 13th, 2015:

Congratulations to Ohio State. Not the result I wanted, but they earned it. Now, between getting dinged and not playing like Superman, did Mariota hurt his stock enough where the Eagles can legitimately take a shot at getting him? I doubt it, but I’d love for it to happen.

  425. 425 CrackSammich said at 12:53 AM on January 13th, 2015:

If Cardale Jones isn’t assured a starting gig next year, he almost needs to enter the draft this year, no matter the cost. If he sits next year behind the other guy, a true freshman, his draft stock plummets. If he transfers, he has to sit a year. It’ll be interesting to see how long teams wait to pull the trigger on him in the draft.

FYI, I’m not against athletic QBs, I just don’t give a flying fuck about what a QB does with his legs. Talk to me about his leadership, accuracy, pocket presence, QB intelligence…… How fast a QB can run is nothing more than a bonus

  454. 454 Jarock said at 8:58 AM on January 13th, 2015:

In most offenses I agree with you. Athleticism can be a nice perk, but without the qualities you mentioned, it’s highly overrated. Kelly’s spread read option heavy offense really benefits from a QB with at least a respectable amount of athleticism. I’m a Nick Foles fan too, but it’s hard to watch him plod forward for four yards on what should be twenty yard gallops. When he should get four, he gets stuffed. It’s not a deal breaker, but it does put limits on how effective Foles will ever be running Kelly’s offense.

Ohio State’s QB reminds me a bit of Tebow. Big and powerful with what appears to be a better arm and release. Of course, he’s not nearly as experienced, and Tebow was a train wreck in the pros. I’m not interested in him unless it’s as a late, late round flyer the Eagles think they might be able to develop.

    Guys,

Keep ya heads up. Who wants to win super bowl no. 49 if you can win no. 50 next year?! The Eagles will make history in 2015!

So with DC Schwartz not returning to the Bills in 2015 it looks more and more like the Giants could end up with either him or Spags as their new DC. *sigh

Its okay, not like they have great talent on defense anyway

and they’re likely gonna get worse on that side

Personally I see the Giants rebounding next season.

They regress this season despite a good season from Eli and great season from ODB. The Giants are a bad team

Lol it’s only january… And already once day (ATLEAST).. I hear some jackass in the local media start of his discussion by saying “I know it’s not realistic and it will never happen”… Yet proceed to talk about trading up for Marriôtta every singe day from now Til the draft… This is an all time low, for ridiculuos local coverage we get as eagke fans,,
    .,,
So everyone knows it will never happen, but we will just talk about it every single day from now Til the end of April?… When will the madness end and Eagles fans get one decent offseason worth of responsible, accurate Eagle coverage?

I’ve learned to not listen. I’ve changed over to soundcloud and I’m much more productive. 🙂

The best is all the people who dream about Marriôtta would turn on him anyway, due to being instant gratification whores and not understanding the player development process DOESNT happen overnight.. Trade away half our future for Marriotta, who will struggle like every young QB in his first 30 starts, can you imagine the how this city would devour the kid if he isn’t perfect his first 30 games? So basically all the people who think they want Marriôtta, don’t want Marriptta because their expectations are so screwed up that they wouldn’t know how to accurately judge hs growth anyway…

There isnt young QB who we can go get that can prove much more than What Foles has in his first 20 games…so the people who think they want Marriotta, don’t really want Martiotta, because they wouldn’t have the patiemce to allow him to develop,
    ..
Point to 3 times where you didn’t like FOles play in the 4th quarter for a young QB, and then I’ll listen to how you all want Marriotta, as if any of you have the patience required to start developing a rookie QB from scratch…LOL smh

16 and 4 in his 20 starts is no good because he does not have the “Pedigree” according to the talking heads. But if they get Marriotta in the first round ,all will be good because, he will have that ” Pedigree”

Last night you saw the good and bad of Oregon. Funny that Meyer basically copied chip and then beat chip’s team at its own game.
