Some DB Talk

One of the questions I’ve been throwing at various people in Mobile is whether Cary Williams will take a pay cut or not. He’s due $8.1M this year and clearly isn’t worth that. While it might be nice to let him go entirely, there is an argument to bringing him back for one more year at a reduced rate.

No one I’ve talked to has a good feel for Williams and what he’ll do. He is a very proud guy so you can see him rejecting a pay cut and telling the Eagles to just cut him. But Williams is also a smart guy (off the field). He may realize that the offer from the Eagles will be about as good as what he might get on the open market. Plus, he wouldn’t have to move, change teams and learn new systems. If his family is happy in Philly, Williams just might be willing to stay and play for less.

A couple of you have asked where Jimmy Bama is writing these days. He is now the lead Eagles writer for a new site called PhillyVoice. Over on the right hand side of this site there is a link to his writing at PV.

Jimmy spoke to someone who covers the Seahawks to ask about CB Byron Maxwell, who we expect to be a key free agent target for the Eagles. The guy Jimmy talked to is Danny Kelly, who knows football and isn’t just a typical writer. His opinion means something.

Kelly said good things about Maxwell. This part stood out for obvious reasons.

The main tenet for Pete Carroll’s system is to not get beat over the top, and Maxwell is fundamentally sound in that area. In fact, the only time off the top of my head that I can remember him getting beat deep was in last year’s Arizona matchup in Week 16, where Michael Floyd made a miraculous catch in the back corner of the end zone even after Maxwell had gotten a hand on the pass and deflected it. So, he does his job well, and that’s evidenced by Seattle’s second straight season giving up the fewest passing yards in the NFL.

I’m guessing Pete Carroll won’t be going after Nate Allen or Bradley Fletcher this offseason.

Make sure you read the whole piece. Good job by Mr. Bama.

Here are my notes on the South’s practice from Wednesday.

It wasn’t a great day for DBs. S Clayton Geathers was the centerfielder a few times and had trouble locating some deep balls. Part of that may be due to the fact the passes were off target and his back was to the ball. The receivers were able to adjust and then Geathers had to react to them.

I need to study Cody Prewitt and AJ Jefferson a lot more. Both guys have looked solid in Mobile.

The best barbecue in Mobile is at a place called The Brick Pit. It is almost a 25 minute drive from the stadium but it is worth it. I got there and the place was full of locals and Giants scouts. I got my food to go and then ate in the car. I had pulled pork, potato salad and beans. Fantastic. 5-stars. Like heaven in your mouth. Make sure you go to The Brick Pit if  you ever come to town.

And now for your daily Alex Flanagan update…we stood near each other on the field. I think she was trying to hit on me as she interviewed several players. That’s her version of playing hard to get, right?

Well, unless he just didn’t want to play in Philly anymore, I don’t know why he wouldn’t take a pay cut. I doubt he’d get much more than what the Eagles would give him anywhere else. He’s definitely not the greatest corner in the world, but he isn’t a huge liability that seems to get torched every week. the other side definitely needs to be upgraded. In a perfect scenario, imo, I’d have Williams still there with an upgrade at safety and the other CB spot from FA.

  14. 14 xeynon said at 11:39 AM on January 22nd, 2015:

Tommy, my issue with Maxwell is that I don’t know how good he actually is in a vacuum. Will he perform nearly as well in a secondary which doesn’t have All Pros at the other three positions? I have my doubts. It’s easy not to get beat when the guy across the field from you can singlehandedly shut down any receiver in the league and you have two of the best safeties in the game helping you out. Not so much when you’re playing with Cary Williams and Malcolm Jenkins.

  15. 15 Ark87 said at 12:11 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

fair point, he’s good enough to be excellent in a great unit. Which at least is better than being the weak link the holds it back or being merely average. The question is would he at least be good in our train-wreck secondary? And are we willing to over-pay for that?

My take is if the personnel guys think he can be good for us, do it. If all we can do is get our hands on 4 Malcolm Jenkins caliber players in say, 3 years, that would be a drastic improvement to this secondary, and worth the money in my opinion.

  16. 16 philliesfan123 said at 1:04 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

xeynon, I’m totally with you on that. I’m not sure either that Maxwell is the type of ( top tier ) cornerback that is a ( stand alone ) shutdown guy, vs a ( sum of the parts ) guy. His playing with 3 of the best players at their positions ( all pro bowlers ) in the NFL, i.e. – Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman, could have a lot to do with his success. I have to be honest that I haven’t seen a ton of him playing, but what I have seen tells me that he is, very physical at the line of scrimmage ( jamming receivers, run defense ) and is pretty good at jump balls ( playing the ball , deflections ) but has a little difficulty in change of direction ( looks like might have tight hips ) and staying with the more speedy receivers who have some wiggle. Then again, what corners don’t struggle with that sometimes. We will have to leave it up to the experts ( Chip and his NEW guy ) to make that decision.

  44. 44 Mitchell said at 3:49 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

Perhaps they should drop Williams, sign Williams to a vet min, grab Maxwell, one of the SF boys, Chromartie, etc, move Carrol outside, draft a cb in the first 3 rounds and a flyer late in the 6/7.

A lot of this depends on Watkins. If they think he can start then we won’t even need to go after “big” in FA. I’m basing this off of Cary not taking a pay cut and extrapolating what I say from Watkins. Boykin would obviously stay in the slot.

As far as the draft, not as high on Wayne’s as I was because I fear his body will remain to slender. His fram just doesn’t look like he can add a ton of weight. I would say Gunter, Rowe or Collins.

  45. 45 anon said at 4:20 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

Watkins will get abused. We need a way better safety. You’re going to put some late round guy on ODB, Dez Bryant (even Terrance williams), desean?

More than happy to get a cromarte and rotate watkins in, they should have rotated watkins the last 3-4 games of the season when brad was getting tore up all game.

I’d be happy with a combo of Cox, Cary and Carroll — the triple C’s, with Watkins rotating and Carroll dropping into dime LB in sets with lots of DBs.

I’d also take a safety in FA, and let him rotate high a mid round rookie. The question is obviously, if you buy a high priced DB, what kind of kids are you going to draft? Do you still spend high picks or do you take developmental fliers?

  46. 46 Mitchell said at 4:26 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

Need more high DB talent regardless. If I had it my way, I’d trade back and grab an extra 2nd-3rd and use 2 picks in the first 3 rounds to get a S and a CB. There is nothing back there. I’m also pissed I have to watch this dumb Tom Brady interview instead of the Senior Bowl practices.

It remains to be seen if Watkins can or can not be good covering those top flight players. He was the first player taken in the 4th and obviously only 1 year in the league, he has size and speed. I’m not saying he can (I’d lean that way) but it’s too early to say he can’t.

  47. 47 anon said at 4:33 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

Agree — hopefully new coach helps, and some later round players can ball. I think safety is the key, knowing that if you get beat, or you’re playing trail that someone will have your back and maybe even make a play (before the game is out of hand).

  48. 48 Mitchell said at 4:35 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

Yes, to add to your point and perhaps counter a bit, I don’t think it matters where the talent comes from as long as we get better somewhere. If you replace Fletcher now you don’t have to worry about him getting beat CONSTANTLY at the same time like you said, if there is a S with instincts, you can get beat and the safety is there to bail you out. At this point, I would rather have a safety with more field visions than a spectacular tackler. If Nate has x degree more instincts he probably intercepts many more balls or has many more PBU’s.

If Boykin ever got hurt, Watkins would move into Nickel….. I know he will ATleast be a quality inside corner for us…but hopefully he can be more, and figures it out at either outside cornerback or Safety….. 60. 60 Avery Greene said at 4:45 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

Can’t think of it like that. Have to think in terms of player ability. Chancellor, Maxwell, Sherman, Grimes (undrafted), and Brock (undrafted). If they have skills and coaching (which we’ve hopefully fixed) late round guys can be had in the secondary.

Andre Waters (my #2 fav safety) was undrafted as well.

No, you don’t draft late rounds to be starters right away, but you can’t be closed to the idea that a guy might come in and play lights out, which we would most likely cut someone that we determined to be a stop-gap starter anyways. There’s no one right now on the roster that jumps out at you as a long term starter (2+ years) on the corners or 2nd safety spot.

Also, I hope they can find another corner so they can cut Cary. Too expensive and not very good.

Don’t really expect to see Cary take a paycut, more likely he restructures, signs a two year extension that gets his cap figure down, but write the contract in away we can easily get out of it after next season, so while Cary probably gets a new two year deal, this will be his last season, because after this year the corner we draft should be able to be counted on to start september of 2016…… Fingers crossed we get lucky and draft a corner that transitions to the NFL quickly and can take Cary’s job this year, but we can’t count on that which is why Cary has to be here one more year, just to make a smooth transition to a corner we draft….

Hopefully we work it out with Cary and they start Cary and Nolan in September with a better safety behind them…. If they can’t work it out with Cary, they will waive him and bring back Bradley to start opposite of Nolans as the stop gap which would really really suck…

Eagles don’t have any young outsider corners on the roster so they 100% wañt to go yoûng at the position, which is why they will keep our continuity in place with the stop gap veterans Cary and Nolan, while the rookies we draft grow enough to take the stop gaps place, hopefully sooner rather than later….improved safety play should help in the mean time..they will pay for a safety, draft the corners… Best case scenario, the corners we draft look so great right away, we can end up waiving Cary in August, but we can’t count on that, which is why he has to be brought back just in case the corners we draft need a year to grow into the NFL role

Eagles will absolutely pay for a safety. Just look at it from a roster building perspective, you want a mix of youth and veterans at every position…Eagles won’t mind paying for a veteran safety because theyhave a handful of young safeties on the roster. We have no young outside cornees in the pipeline being groomed, so they are going to want to draft corners..
    ..
If the Eagles pay big money for a free agent, he has to fill a big need and be the perfect fit in every way possible….. That’s devin McCourty! The perfect mirrored safety to Jenkins, both former corners,…. If we can’t get Devin they will turn their attention to someone like Rahim..

Maybe if we strike out and can’t sign a safety, they will change approach and sigń a veteran corner, but I think that’s highly unlikely…

Pay for Safety, draft your corners,.

He can make Chung a good safety, probably thinks he has the Midas safety touch lol

Im not sure why you love him so much. He will struggle being on the field as much as we ask our defense to play. You are also assuming you get good value for Ced. He would get us a 5th maybe. Too many things would have to go perfect for this to work out for us. I’d just rather address the secondary and keep te continuity we have up front. They are already one of the best fronts in the league

  90. 90 GEAGLE said at 6:37 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

I have heard chip rave about Halati Ngata and those RARE 340lbers who can move on a couple of occassions, but chup mentions how rare they are and hard to get… If we have a chance to trade a 3rd round pick to go up 3 spots and get one of those rare behmoths that can move, you do it and say thank you…. That’s adding a Marcel Dareus type of beast in the middle…. Like Logan, Shelton doesn’t have to go to the bench on pass rushing downs.
    ,,
I heard chip rave about this type of talent, I heard chip talk about how hard they are to come by… If we have a Chance at one, I assume we take it….but it’s not a crazy need to where you HAVE to get one…. If teams in the top 15 are snatching up OL and Edge rushers and he starts to fall, think you have to consider it

You don’t NEED him, but adding a guy like him really can take your young DL to scary elite status for years to come… Beastly front 7 means we don’t need a safety to help against the run

Teams dont sign players to contracts and trade them in today’s nfl. We need to give a signing bonus which gets prorated as soon as he’s traded. Also it is just bad business. It creates too much mistrust amongst players. Its just shady. Think about it. When is the last time you have heard of someone being signed to a multi year contract and traded.

  95. 95 GEAGLE said at 6:27 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

What makes him going back to school significant, is we will lose Vinny Curry after this year, by then Bair will be like 67yrs old and need a hip replacement and we willl be in the market for a DE, so this kid going back to school may fit our timeline really well..

  100. 100 GEAGLE said at 7:12 PM on January 22nd, 2015:

NO chance we can keep him…. He knows he can play in this league, and we can’t compete with what 4-3 teams will offer him…. He basically said he wants to see how many snaps he gets next year, talking about how he wants to start….no way that playing him 40% of snaps (at the most) can keep him here long term… A 4-3 team will value a young beast who is about to blow up and whos best ball is still ahead of him……No shot we can keep him, might as well trade him for a young player who is a better fit that we can keep here long term, unless we want to let Vinny walk for a compensatory pick, but that’s only if we don’t plan on being active in free agency next year

It’s going to kill me watching Curry beast Opposite Cameron wake next year for Miami

I sickens me that the G’s got ODB in that draft knowing that Chip and Howie would have probably taken him, had he fallen to us. So now I am trying to put a positive spin on it; the ODB-pick looks like the real reason the giants didnt clean house this year. He made Eli look much better and that saved Coughlins ass in return. The result is that they are all back again come september. Given how dysfunctional that team has been since their last superbowl-run (a season in which they werent actually good until playoffs) could this be an overall positive? I mean, Eli as a QB doesnt scare me at all, we have his number and so does the rest of the league. And Coughlin appears to be stuck in another era, playing underachievers all over that defense. A turnover is exactly what that team needs. And they wont get it because of ODB.

Good news for fans of both guys is that maturity can improve. Manziel still has time to grow up although it’s getting shorter all the time. Winston is still practically a baby. Both have to be considered very risky investments.
