Ali Marpet

One of my favorite players in the upcoming draft is OG Ali Marpet. I think he would make a terrific Eagle and he could step in and challenge for the RG spot right away.

But he’s from D3 Hobart College. What kind of value do you put on him? Are there any fears he won’t be able to handle the NFL?

In the 2 drafts with Chip Kelly as part of the equation, the Eagles have been a big school team. The closest thing to a pick from a small school is someone from Vanderbilt or Utah. Is that on Chip, Howie, or just how things worked out?

Marpet is not a complete projection. He went to the Senior Bowl and was one of the stars. He went to the Combine and posted terrific numbers. You can judge him against NF-caliber talent. Marpet didn’t just do okay, he excelled. He stood out.

Jimmy Bama and I talked to him in Mobile. I can’t stress to you enough how impressive he was. Marpet played LT in college, but knew he had to move inside in the NFL. He was realistic about what he could and could not do. That isn’t to say he lacked confidence, but this wasn’t a delusional kid. And trust me…a lot of prospects are sure they are the next Reggie White, Jason Peters, or Troy Vincent.

PE.com has up a whole bunch of info on Marpet. Bo Wulf wrote the piece and you can always trust him, unless he’s writing about that dump of a college…Wake Forest. Bo was held captive there for 4 years and suffers from Stockholm Syndrome.  He wasn’t smart enough to get into a good school, like Appalachian State University.

Back to Marpet.

The Eagles do have interest. Jeff Stoutland ran Marpet’s Pro Day workout. You can see some of the workout on a video in this link. You don’t send Stout to check a kid out unless you have serious interest in him.

It will be interesting to see where Marpet goes in the draft. I would be comfortable spending a 2nd round pick on Marpet. I’d love to get him in the 3rd, but I just don’t think there is any way he lasts that long. Regardless of when or where he goes, Marpet is someone I’ll follow out of curiosity. He’s the best D3 prospect I’ve ever seen. Does he become a stud OL, an effective starter or does he have a disappointing career? I’ll be pulling for him, as long as he’s not with an NFC East rival.

I read the name “Ali Marpet” and my mind associated “Ali Baba on a flying Carpet”. So maybe that will help me remember his name.

It seems right. Herremans came from Saginaw Valley State and helped us pretty much immediately.

Fitting, then, that a trio of Canadian football graduates were key contributors in Sunday’s incredible comeback win over the Green Bay Packers, the overtime thriller of an NFC Championship as compelling as you are ever going to see.
Jon Ryan, punter. Luke Willson, tight end. And Chris Matthews, special-teams ace.
Take away one of the key plays made by any of those three and the Seahawks Super Bowl defence would have ended in defeat against a Packers team that frittered it all away.

I would like him in round 2 – I have seen people mock him to us in Round 1 – that would bum me out…he just doesn’t seem to dominate the way TJ Clemmings, Fisher and Scherff do on film, and he was going against lesser competition I would assume…do you have any strength concerns? I wish we could get him in round 3 but I agree that would be highly unlikely. Great prospect – means a lot to hear you say he is best D3 player you have ever seen.

Looks like PFF is expanding into college ball a little bit. (CFF?) Here’s Mariota vs Winston, done on 12/31. Their numbers show a strong preference for Mariota. It’s almost Evan Mathis-like love.

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/12/31/mariota-vs-winston-by-the-numbers/

  8. 8 Alistair Middlemiss said at 12:25 PM on March 24th, 2015:

PFF punish/reward decision making, so the number of picks Winston throws is a huge negative and while Mariota is a metronome finding the open receiver and taking low risks. The things that NFL guys like about Winston will not show up in PFF scoring.

PFF is an interesting resource but it rewards players who make very limited mistakes and the occasion good play, rather than some more impactful players. Take Mathis for example – very rarely makes mistakes, does not miss assignments and gets to the second level well in the run game means he will consistently grade well, but that in my opinion means he is a very good guard – not a great one which PFF makes him out to be.

I almost want us to go back to back OL in this draft first picks, TJ Clemmings in the 1st and Marpet in the 2nd, give you a young long term pair of guards with one having the potential to play RT.

Draft group for WR’s is really deep, feel you can get a Conley in the 3rd and a Kenny Bell in the 4th. I know that does not add anything secondary wise but i would rather draft to strengths rather than reach and hope next years FA group and Draft are better.

  10. 10 Charlie Kelly said at 12:26 PM on March 24th, 2015:

noramlly id be pissed at duel OL picks, but damn if they get rid of mathis, we will really need it.

Conely? Kenny Bell.. meh those WRs really just dont do it for me.

  11. 11 Alistair Middlemiss said at 12:45 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Well any 3rd round a lower draft pick is going to have flaws and limitations, i just think they have the tools to become legitimate players, and i think you can have an offence without a stand out superstar WR.

  12. 12 ICDogg said at 12:56 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Yes, I’d agree. Give the QB slightly more time and he can make things happen. Open up a slightly bigger hole and the RBs can make things happen. Use Ertz a little more. Throw to Sproles once in a while. There are things we could do with that even if our starting WRs were Huff (or Matthews) and Cooper.

I’d like to see more double-RB situations, more double TE situations, less triple WR situations.

  13. 13 ICDogg said at 12:27 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I’d love to do that actually

  14. 14 Javi Echie said at 12:32 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Agreed. Especially if Chip sticks to his guns about running the ball so much that back-to-back o-line picks would not only give us potential day 1 starters but depth as well if one doesn’t start right away or if they move veterans like Tobin and Barbre to the bench.

  15. 15 ICDogg said at 12:42 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Exactly. We invest this much in running backs and a quarterback we need to create the conditions for them to thrive.

What was the biggest difference for Dallas from 2 years ago to last year? It wasn’t that their crappy defense got so much better. It’s that their line improved and helped keep the defense off the field.

  16. 16 James said at 12:59 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I would love OL 1 and 2. But If there is a nice tweener CB/S prospect like Eric Rowe in the 3rd still available then I’d rather we get him than a WR.

  17. 17 ICDogg said at 1:00 PM on March 24th, 2015:

    I’d be OK with that.

  18. 18 Alistair Middlemiss said at 1:03 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I mean my suggested WR’s could well be available in the 4th/5th, and there are other guys we could be interested in late round – DeAndre Smelter is a player i would love to take a late round flyer on – and we know this team is not worried about ACL tears!

  19. 19 Mr. Magee said at 12:44 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I’m not sure about 2nd round, but if I can’t have a HaHa Clinton-Dix on my team, I’ll take an Ali Marpet

  20. 20 wee2424 said at 12:51 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I wouldn’t mind back to back Oline. Our line needs to be strong and a combo of fisher/marpet or clemmings/marpet would insure that. The only thing that deters me from this is WR and safety. We have the chance to get a very good WR in draft. It all depends on how have Mathews and Huff progressed.

  21. 21 Javi Echie said at 12:55 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Really wouldn’t worry about WR and Safety early in the draft. This is another deep WR draft so we can land impact wideouts in the 3rd and after. As for safety, the top safety in this draft Collins doesn’t really fit what the eagles are looking for in there safety so I doubt they take one in the first and doubt they take one in the 2nd.

  22. 22 wee2424 said at 1:40 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I agree. I think safety will be taken in 3rd possibly 4th. I want to make it clear that in no way am I panicking over WR. However Cooper is ineffective. Mathews probably stays in slot. So you go WR in 3rd or 4th who probably is not going to be that much of a threat. You take Maclin out of last year and you lose some games that we won. We don’t need an all-star but you do need someone good. Not having a threat opposite Cooper negatively affects the entire offense.

  23. 23 Javi Echie said at 1:47 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Oh I hear ya and absolutely agree Wee, we need another option on the outside. My outlook is based a lot on what I’ve been hearing/reading about how Chip values WRs as compared to RBs, O-line, and QB. It seems he doesn’t mind not having a real elite receiver on the outside, even though he was willing to pay Mac 10mil. The fact is we don’t know what go through Chip’s head and wont know until after the draft. I am all for drafting at least one very good to solid WR that can hopefully contribute right away.

  24. 24 wee2424 said at 3:11 PM on March 24th, 2015:

With how he is able to scheme WRs open alot I completely agree with him devaluing that position and valuing Oline more. I think if you have a dominate Oline you can truly dictate the game, and it makes every position group better. However I think no matter how good your scheme is their is a level of talent you don’t want to go under. Brady truly struggled 2 seasons ago with some garbage WRs. You need talent to execute scheme. Then when the D figures you out then you really need that talent to just simply beat the man in front of you.

talked to a team exec the other day and he mentioned that his team would like to draft 3 OL…can't remember who it was. I'm getting old!!— Daniel Jeremiah (@MoveTheSticks) March 24, 2015

Now Jeremiah is an ex Eagles scout – and i think he is pretty plugged into the eagles from a draft perspective and i think they can use him as a media voice at times – he came out before the draft last year saying that Marcus Smith would go late first and that NFL teams were high on him.

Now i am not saying it is the eagles for sure – but it would not surprise me if they were the team he spoke to.

  52. 52 GEAGLE said at 6:12 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I would imagine that if they draft a 3rd it would have to be in the later later rounds…. I find it hard to believe that the 3rd OL we draft would come in like round 5….. when we get to those 6th and 7th round picks, thats when i think we should really go with pure BPA. Hopefully you find a kid available that you had a 5th round grade on….

Im fixated on Fish and Grasu…. I have to see them draft two Other OLineman to believe it.
    ..
Grasu is very important because he is our chance to have an Elite backup center if Kelce has to miss time, and Jason hasnt exactly been the posterchild for durability in his young career. I think the center position is just as important as Tackle in todays game… Grasu is talented enough that he could have a chance at taking Kelce’s job, I just dont think it would happen because its a poor use of assets,. since Grasu is 300lbs and has 32inch arm length so he can play Guard, where as Kelce is too small to play anything but Center… But with how important the Center position is, and how good Grasu is, how athletic he is, high character, leader who chip recruited and flourished playing and practicing in a high tempo, I would be absolutely SHOCKED if he isnt an Eagle on draft day….basically I think Grasu will be the only backup center on our roster, and they will fill the bench with G/T’s…
    ..
Fisher I also expect to be drafted, because he is a Guard we can target and count on being available, trade back a few spots, pick up a 3rd and still end up with Fisher, a starting Guard next year and our eventual RT of the future…
    ..
Think these guys are too good, and it would take a prospect that would significantly outclass them to have us pass up a quality known commodity for an unknown… Fisher and Grasu arent the only quality Guards in this draft, i just think when its our turn to pick there might be a slightly better rated guard, but no one that will be so much better that its worth gambling on the unknown, especially not knowing how 300lber will handle our tempo and unique practice style

  53. 53 laeagle said at 1:10 PM on March 24th, 2015:

It would be really interesting if the trade rumors we’re hearing are only partially true. By that, I mean rumors of Boykin and Kendricks being up for trade. How would that be partially true? First, we don’t go for Mariota. Second, we load up on O-lineman, as some have suggested (Clemmings in 1, Marpet/Fisher in 2). Third, we move those aforementioned guys for more picks in this draft, like an extra 2 or 3, and use that to pick up one of the higher-ranked WRs. Then maybe that Arizona St. safety in the 3rd.

In other words, we could be moving assets, but it may be to stock up on picks to actually use, instead of as ammunition for Mariota. It would reconcile the talk from Chip about keeping Bradford with the still-swirling trade rumors. As well as with the importance Chip places on the draft.

We all love the Boy-King, but the fact is, we’re loaded now with guys who can play slot, between Boykin, Thurmond, and Watkins. He’s a great player but somewhat expendable. Same situation exists with Kendricks. As much as I’d love a Kendricks/Alonso inside duo, I could handle one of those ILB posts being average if it meant we could be exceptional somewhere else, like OG or WR.

Of course, I still maintain that if Mariota drops, then Chip makes a move. But not if he has to give up Bradford. I really don’t think he would at this point. 2 firsts and players, maybe. So that means we only get Mariota if he gets in range.

  54. 54 anon said at 1:11 PM on March 24th, 2015:

  56. 56 laeagle said at 1:25 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I think Bradford and Mariota both would be a very good situation. Gives us a chance to both wait and see with Mariota as well as develop Mariota. And a chance to greatly increase the trade value of both.

    And yes. CLAS 93.

  57. 57 RobNE said at 1:29 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I am Comm School 93. Wow we were both there for the same heartbreaking losses. Welsh kicking a FG down 3 to GT while ranked # 1 in the country, as if an ACC team at the time could possibly hold on to the # 1 ranking if not undefeated. I hate him for that. Then losing the Sugar Bowl after being up on TN something like 20-3. Thankfully I don’t remember a lot of the ending of that game.

seriously, how can he kick a FG? Does he then win co-ACC title….wow, what a big deal. If you have one chance for glory, how can you do that. I know after the penalty it was 4th and goal from the 6th. But you had Herman Moore on your team. How can you justify kicking and trying to be co-ACC champs rather than say take a 25% chance at being the GD national champions?!?!?!? We’ll just wait for the next time UVA has a shot at that in football.

I mean, not that it still bothers me or anything.

    I think he’s a good player.

He kicked the shit out of alot of our guys, he’s got heavy hands, a powerful base.

I just don’t know that he’s athletic enough for Kelly’s scheme.

Personally I think he’s going to make a great swing interior OL.

Also he’s not even the best D3 OL I’ve ever seen.

  73. 73 sonofdman said at 2:14 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Sometimes a player will take more reasonable deal a year early in exchange for more financial stability and less risk for them. The Eagles would not be competing with anyone at this point. As a player (like Kendricks) gets closer to free agency, he is less likely to accept a reasonable deal (from the team’s perspective) and more likely to risk injury and see what offers he can get in free agency.

Just look at Maclin. The Eagles couldn’t lock him up long term early, he got to free agency, and someone paid him more than the Eagles offered. You pay them early so you don’t have to compete with other teams in free agency to keep your own good players.

Yeah, they definitely tried to low ball Maclin to get him to sign a long term deal, as he was coming off an injury, but Maclin took a chance that he wouldn’t get hurt again and would play well and he cashed in.

  150. 150 GEAGLE said at 5:20 PM on March 24th, 2015:

We would be lucky if we could get a 6th for Polk. He has no “trade up” value. The best we could probably do is get a young talent in one of the new player for player trades we see in today’s NFL..
    ..
Personally I will be sick if we lose him before seeing what he can do in a bigger role, but I have no idea what chip is planning to do with him. I hope to keep him, but i don’t know how ok chip is with keeping 4RBs, but we lost a few good ST players and Polk is a ST MONSTER In various roles so I hope he is safe, but if understand if he didn’t want to keep 4 backs

  158. 158 GEAGLE said at 4:05 PM on March 24th, 2015:

they dont call him big balls chip for nothing… Keeping Maclin I think would have made the draft much easier, and I think fans would be perfectly ok with everything that happened if Mac was still here… but to need two Guards and two WRs, i understand why fans are a little worried..

personally i think Chip is obsessed with offense, and I wont ever worry about his offense going into a season. I think the only way we will ever see a bad chip offense is if we get ravaged by injuries..
    ..
it would be like Rex Ryan going into a season with a horrible defense.. i dont think we would ever see that happen, and I dont think Chip will ever be ok with average offense,. scoring less then 30 is like the end of the world for chip. I trust that by the time we have to play in september, his offense will be fine…

  171. 171 botto said at 3:42 PM on March 24th, 2015:

sounds similar to what everyone was saying about dallas last year, they can’t do this or that because they suck etc…

  172. 172 GEAGLE said at 4:07 PM on March 24th, 2015:

    they will be good

  174. 174 GEAGLE said at 5:03 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Is that what I said? Or am I really just saying I prefer that they improve their WR position instead of the trenches? They have to spend their first Round pick on something I would much rather they go WR instead of trenches. If you haven’t noticed the front 7 is the strength of our team since we can’t say run game without knowing what our OL will look like. Why would I want them to spend a first round pick on a player that will provide resistance to the strength of our team? Like every other QB, if you beat Eli up he will start to suck. Look at the two Cowboys game last year. We gave romo the beating of his life on thanksgiving and he was atrocious… They protected him much better in the re match and we lost…. We swept the Giants last year, they were weak In the trenches and haven’t significantly upgraded it, while I know our young beasts will be even better then they were last year…
    ..
So again, hopefully they do spend a top 12’pick on a WR, rather see them get a WR, then to add top Olineman like Sherf

  175. 175 botto said at 5:06 PM on March 24th, 2015:

I see what you are saying, makes sense.

  176. 176 GEAGLE said at 5:15 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Fundamentally I feel like nothing matters if you aren’t good enough in the trenches. Say what we will about Dallas but atleast they invested some first Round picks on their line. I don’t know WTF the Giants are doing, they haven’t had an OL in years and it’s like they have no urgency to build a good one, I don’t get it..
    ..
But truthfully, I expect the Giants to be a much tougher team next year. Last year they added 27 new players. I knew you can’t bring that many new players together and have success right away. Now that those new players have a year of gelling they should be much tougher. Hopefully our DL can keep dominating those Giant match ups…
    ..
But when the Giants build a top OL, you can bet an Amari/ODB tandem would make me nervous…

  177. 177 bsuperfi said at 5:59 PM on March 24th, 2015:

The question for me is do you need to be more than good enough in the trenches. Chip may think a dominating o line is the key to success. Maybe it can be, but are the big time squads dominating up front? It seems to me that it’s not always the case, partially because there are Qbs like Rogers and Brady who can still play great anyway.

I guess part of the answer is related to scheme. Some schemes may emphasize o line play over others. But how long has it been since we’ve seen teams with the best o lines consistently at the top?

if the Giants bulk up on wr, hopefully their o line isn’t even good enough.

  178. 178 GEAGLE said at 6:41 PM on March 24th, 2015:

i dont think we can find a top defense that doesnt have a bad ass DL…Pats/Seahawks had strong DL’s with terrors like Chandler Jones, Bennett, Avril. The Broncos had some beast attacking the line of scrimage like potroast, von Miller… the Niners teams that went deep into the playoffs had beastn DL’s…. so if we get to the playoffs and have any plans on advancing, we are probably going to have to overcome some really tough front 7’s… The Seahawks OL isnt highly regarded as a top 5 elite OL, but they are certainly good enough to run the ball against some elite Front 7’s and help keep Wilson from getting squashed like a bug…. our OL needs to be good enough to not only give our QB time, but keep him from getting killed… and probably no point in paying your RB’s a ton if they cant poen some holes against the top defensive fronts…. so maybe you dont have an elite Dominant OL, but at the very least you need a quality LT and Center, and you need 5 men with good chemistry that work together well..

just look at next year, Buffalo Bills are coming to town. Thats one bad mother shut yo mouth, defense… Kyle Williams, Marcel Dareus, Mario Williams, Jon Jerry.. we aint getting past that defense with some average OL… Better have atleast close to a top 10 OL to open some running lanes for Demarco against that DL, and keep Mario Williams and Jerry from Killing Bradford
    ..
I dont know that you need the best OL in the NFL like we had in 2013, but you need it to be good enough to allow you to compete against the top defensive fronts.. and if next years OL is good enough to run the ball against the Bills D, and give Bradford enough time to have success against Gilmore and that secondary…probably means your OL is going to be good enough to whoop on some of the average DL’s we face…
    ..
The more dominant your OL is, the more room for error, WR’s, RB’s and QBs get… considering we are going with Bradford and a very young WR corp, we will probably need to make the OL and the run game really dominant, to make life as easy as possible on our QB and WR’s in their first year in these new roles on our offense

Looking at Lurie’s PC, it seems as if he was pretty straight-up and wasn’t trying to protect anyone. Said that Kelly wanted his own football guy, wanted his own style RB. He also said that Gamble’s firing had nothing to do with the Kelly/Roseman dynamic. Add to that the report that Kelly knew he couldn’t “save” Gamble. It sounds to me like he got fired not for how he and Roseman interacted, or his track record as an evaluator but for something that had nothing to do with football. A “human resources” type issue. Just speculating, but I wonder if McCloughlan’s influence rubbed off on him too much in SF.

  243. 243 unhinged said at 5:09 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Mysteries lend themselves to speculation. When I read that Gamble was escorted out of the NovaCare Complex, that cannot be SOP for football front offices. What did Tommy do? I’v got to check out the press conference, but I don’t expect to have that question answered.

  244. 244 Greg Richards said at 5:12 PM on March 24th, 2015:

It is actually standard operating procedure for a lot of football teams and businesses in general to have security escort out fired executives to ensure they don’t take any intellectual property out with them. Former scout John Middlekauf said on twitter that the Eagles did the same thing with him when he was let go.

  245. 245 Bert's Bells said at 6:21 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Yeah, I’d be shocked if it wasn’t standard for pro-sports teams.

  246. 246 Alistair Middlemiss said at 6:16 PM on March 24th, 2015:

The theory i have always had is that Gamble was ‘cultivating’ press relationships by giving out information, as he was getting so many fluff pieces and positive spins comparing him to be much better than Howie. Now some of all that may have been true, but it was always the same reporters and the last 2 years there has been a lot more information getting out of the Novacare than we were used to before he joined.

Has just been my personal opinion.

    ..
when it comes to the OL, i highly doubt chip is going to skimp us at that position. With the RB’s we loaded up on, and a fragile QB, this man isnt stupid. He knows an OL will be more important than ever… I imagine he was sick to his stomach last year watching the OL mess so bad there were games we could barely get 3 yards per carry.. Think Chip already forgot being on the goal line in crucial moments, losing, because he was too afraid to call a run play with Molk getting Knocked into Foles lap as soon as he snapped the ball?…

Cant wait to see this draft. Chip seemed to go buckwild in free agency now that Howie took the cap shackles off, cant wait to see how Wild chip gets during the draft. When it comes to the OL, i bet we come out of the draft smelling like roses with some type of Power move like:

Trade back to like #26 and Draft Oregon G/T Jake Fisher, and get an extra 3rd round pick that he uses to get Hironiss Grasu, and after ripping chip for getting rid of the guards, he uses 1 pick to get both the high level OLineman from Oregon. That one move would give us:
    1)Next years starting Guards
    2) High Level Backup for Kelce which is crucial
    3) The RT of the future with
    ..
people can say we might have reached for Jake, but wont be able to complain about the Value we got in return for our 1st round pick… Fat chance we will ever be able to get OL that dont have to worry about playing at our tempo…
Ill be pretty surprised if the Oregon guards dont become Eagles

  261. 261 mksp said at 8:24 PM on March 24th, 2015:

Yes, quite an impressive feat of logic by GEAGLE, to link two well-regarded offensive linemen formerly coached by Chip Kelly to a team currently coached by Chip Kelly that had an aging, and now incomplete, offensive line.

    Kudos, GEAGLE! Kudos.

    Danny Shelton
    Eric Kendricks
    Shaq Thompson
    Benardik McKinney
    Jordan Phillips
    Bud Dupree
    Arik Armstead
    DGB
    Trae Waynes
    Jalen Collins
    Todd Gurley
    Dante Fowler
    to name a few

Because he’s talked about all these players enough for people to remember that he talked about them if he proclaims his great genius and foresight, but not enough that if we don’t take one people don’t laugh at him for being an ass like what happened with his ridiculous FA claims.

Picking a name out of a hat and ranting for a week doesn’t make it an informed opinion.

For some reason i wouldn’t leave out still getting Fisher/ Grasu with the 1/2 round picks. If kelly wants his guys he won’t care of the value. Hopefully he has a better understanding of value of the rookies.

  267. 267 Greg Richards said at 7:11 PM on March 24th, 2015:

The Vikings signed Casey Matthews. Thus far, we’ve signed 4 UFAs(Murray, Maxwell, Mathews, and Thurmond) and lost 4 UFAs(Maclin, Allen, Fletcher, Matthews). So if we don’t sign anymore UFAs and Brad Smith signs with another team before the June 1st cutoff day there’s a chance that we’d qualify for a comp pick next year dependent on the contracts Smith and Matthews sign for and if they make the 53-man roster of their new teams. It’d be a 7th round comp pick in all likelihood though.

  268. 268 anon said at 7:16 PM on March 24th, 2015:

We could get a pick for Smith? If you sign players to a 1-yr deal and they leave are you still eligible for compensation or does it have to be home grown players?
