Graham In, Gore Out?

Monday proved to be interesting for the Eagles.

The good news is that OLB Brandon Graham re-signed with the team. That was crucial. The 3-4 is built around good OLB play. The Eagles cut Trent Cole and needed someone to be the starter at the Predator spot. There were some interesting options available, but none that I really wanted. Keeping Graham was the best option.

There was a feeling that Graham would try to find a role with a 4-3 team where he could be a DE, but he ended up staying in a LB/DE role. He’ll get the one thing he covets most…playing time.

I watched tape of Jason Worilds and never fell in love with him. Good LB, but not a great pass rusher. Brian Orakpo’s injuries made me nervous. Pernell McPhee is a 280-pound chess piece more than a LB. Greg Hardy was fascinating, but had serious baggage and would have been very pricey. Graham really was the way to go.

He will get $26M over 4 years. That’s good money for him and fits the budget.

The odd news is that Frank Gore might not be coming to Philly. He is reportedly talking to Indy about going there. Some say he is now set to join the Colts.

He’s got the right to change his mind. The Colts have more of a power run game, which is what he’s used to. They also have a franchise QB. I can see why he might want to go to Indy.

I’m not happy. Frank is one of my favorite non-Eagles and I looked forward to him coming to Philly. It will be disappointing for that not to happen. I know more than a few fans are very happy. Not everyone was on board with the Gore signing.

The Eagles now must find another RB in free agency and/or the draft. We’ll see what happens.

Good thing there are a lot of options in the draft at RB, and RB is easier to plug rookies into than other spots.

There is a theory that everything we do is motivated by the feedback we receive, reinforcing certain behaviors and discouraging others. So, if you want something to stop, withhold feedback. If everyone does it, the actions will either change or cease. It is hard, and I sometimes fail to take the advice I just gave, but it is the way to go.

In other words, don’t feed the trolls, or the trolling comments at least. Respond to the ones you deem worthy and ignore the others.

Unless, of course, you secretly want to reinforce the behavior because you enjoy the feedback you receive when you respond…

Gore was definitely a good signing for next year. But, I’m not too concerned over losing an expensive 32 year old RB on the downswing of his career. If Maxwell pulled out last minute, this entire FA weekend would seem like a big waste at this point. I’m really interested to see where the rest of this $50mil goes. Cox and Kendricks won’t take up all of it that’s for sure. There’ll be more than a few new Eagles by this time tomorrow that we never even discussed which will be very exciting.

  27. 27 xeynon said at 10:03 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Happy we’re resigning Graham, happy we’re not signing Gore. Was not a fan of paying 7.5 million guaranteed dollars to a 32 y/o RB.

Latest rumor I heard is the Eagles more-or-less had a deal worked out with Maclin, and after they traded McCoy Mac’s agent came back and said “now that you’ve got this extra cap room we think you can afford to pay a bit more”. If that’s true Chip screwed the pooch by trading McCoy before the Maclin deal was done.

  28. 28 James Skip Carl said at 10:21 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Didn’t screw anything, Maclin isn’t a game changing receiver and Chip had to jump on that deal before McCoy’s agent ruined it asking for money. As far as Gore, I would rather have Henry Josey.

  29. 29 xeynon said at 10:25 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Maclin’s a very good player. If there was a chance to sign him for 9-10 million per, it would’ve been money well spent. As for the McCoy trade, it went from initial discussion to consummation in 20 minutes. You can’t tell me Chip did his due diligence and I’m not sure he thought through the repercussions thoroughly. He’s a good coach. We have zero evidence that he’s a good salary cap manager or personnel guy.

  30. 30 James Skip Carl said at 10:47 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Very good players don’t make 10 million dollars, teams like the Raiders and Redskins pay guys like that and that’s why they suck. Keep that money and pay Kendricks.

  31. 31 GEAGLE said at 11:02 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Riley cooper is cut after this year
Jordan Mathews makes almost a mil a year
huff makes under a mil a year
The rookie WR we draft(in 15 or 16) draft will make a mil a year
Brad Smith is off the books
Maehl o gets paid in food stamps
    ..
Once Coop is cut they have chump change invested in a position that the team allocates like 20-25mil for as a whole. Our 5 WRs combined should be costing us 20-25 a year… Take coop out of the equation and we are paying Maehl, Jordan and Huff like less then 3 mil combined

  32. 32 BobSmith77 said at 11:10 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Yeah and they’ll have the worst group of WRs this year they have had since early days of Reid if they only draft a WR.

Will be interested to see if you’re singing the same tune in November if the Eagles’ passing game is struggling to generate anything downfield and Maclin is excelling for KC.

  35. 35 BlindChow said at 11:17 PM on March 9th, 2015:

KC is known for their downfield passing game. Always one of Alex Smith’s strengths.

  36. 36 Anders said at 4:53 AM on March 10th, 2015:

the 20 min thing is pure crap, maybe the final phone call lasted 20 min, but you do not make such a trade in 20 min. Consider the Eagles contacted several teams about their interest in McCoy before they punched on the deal.

They most likely got offered Alonso, told Bills to wait, called a bounce of other teams to see what they offered and found Alonso to be the best thing to get in return.

  37. 37 xeynon said at 11:32 AM on March 10th, 2015:

    very true

  41. 41 Jernst said at 10:25 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Maclin was all about getting the most $$ that he could and that’s his right. Good for him. But, just because 1 of the other 32 teams out there is willing to give him more doesn’t mean that you have to beat it and give the player everything he asks for. We offered $10mil per year which should have been more than enough for a career 70 catches 900 yard WR. Maclin went out and found more, good for him. But, long term, I’m fine with not overpaying the dude. I think Chip made the right call even if it hurts us next year.

  42. 42 Flyin said at 10:31 PM on March 9th, 2015:

The money has gotten stupid. You’d think there would be more loyalty. I guess you can never have enough money.

  43. 43 Jernst said at 10:45 PM on March 9th, 2015:

I just wish players like Maclin would be honest. Don’t pretend that you’re negotiating in good faith and really want to stay with the team and have every intention of working out a fair deal without holding them over the coals and then jet for the biggest offer. Just come out and say, “I bet on myself and I won, I’m cashing in and whoever offers the most is where I’m going.” And, then your team can at least plan accordingly. Instead he leads everyone to believe that he has no intention of leaving and that as long as the Eagles meet him close to what he thinks his fair value is that he’s staying. We plan our free agency thinking we’ll be able to lock him up even if we have to go all the way to $10mil per year. We meet his demands and he’s about to sign and then he gets word that we’re flush with cap from trading Shady and goes, ya know what, on second thought, even though I was fine with that offer I think I want an extra million now. Don’t give that million to Cox or Kendricks, give it to me. Then we up our offer to $10mil and he goes and gets an offer from KC who’s desperate and will pay anything for $11 plus and when we tell him we can’t match that he bolts and posts, “Easy Money” on his twitter. Screw him.

  44. 44 Flyin said at 10:55 PM on March 9th, 2015:

The truth eventually comes out. Not sure how much longer loyalty will be in the dictionary.

I’d love for him to stay but after coming off his injury and staying healthy this past yr Mac probably was thinking this might be his last chance at another big pay day.. Cuz there’s no telling if he’ll stay healthy enough for a third contract

  49. 49 CrackSammich said at 11:57 PM on March 9th, 2015:

This could very well be his last payday. Maclin seems like a pretty smart dude, but some of these guys don’t have single skill to fall back on when this is over. No reason to begrudge a guy for wanting to get paid what he’s worth in the few years he can actually get paid to do it.

  50. 50 xeynon said at 11:12 PM on March 9th, 2015:

The point is, Chip may have (stupidly) handed Maclin’s agent more leverage by trading McCoy when he did. When you are negotiating, you don’t do something that tips your hand and makes your ability to give your counterpart more than he’s already asked for obvious – you get the deal done first. This is negotiating strategy 101 and indications are Chip bungled it.

Chip is a smart guy and a good football coach. But there is no evidence he’s a good general manager, and no reason to believe he would be. The jobs demand very different skill sets, which is one reason there are so few people who are good at both.

  51. 51 Jernst said at 11:16 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Well, by all accounts Howie is the one working on the contracts and the one that didn’t get Maclin signed before FA. The trade with the Bills was something that they would want/insist was done prior to the legal tampering period since it drastically changes their FA strategy. Had to happen when it did. Unfortunately, Bills and Rexy have a big mouth and told the players and let it leak from their end. Tough to blame Chip for that. He chooses how to sign, who to go after, probably gives the financial people parameters on what he wants to allocate to each position, he decides who gets traded, ect. But, he doesn’t do the deals and leak the info to the press.

  52. 52 xeynon said at 1:59 AM on March 10th, 2015:

You have to know that a deal as big as McCoy for Alonso is not going to stay a secret.

The tampering period is irrelevant. Maclin was our own player and we could’ve re-signed him at any point. If the deal was almost done, priority #1 should have been to nail it down and not do anything that could scuttle it, which trading McCoy may have done.

  53. 53 A_T_G said at 11:52 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Honestly, that sounds like a bunch of crap made up by someone angry about his two favorite players leaving within a week, and using the Gore deal unraveling for inspiritation.

Maclin had an agreement in place without using all of his bargaining chips – free agency offers – but then saw the cap space go from $40 to $50 million and suddenly started playing hardball? Sounds like a story.

  54. 54 xeynon said at 11:59 PM on March 9th, 2015:

I’d be inclined to think it was BS too, but I heard it from John Barchard of BGN, who is pretty pro-Chip.

It’s scuttlebutt, which is why things need to be qualified. But if it’s true, it is a screw up on Chip’s part.

Would you give Murray a 4 year contract worth $25 million?

  57. 57 GEAGLE said at 10:29 PM on March 9th, 2015:

    Graham

  58. 58 Greg Richards said at 10:30 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Toss up. Graham brings more pass rush, Worilds better in coverage. When toss-up, go wit the known quantity. Yes, I’d give Murray that big of a contract. Think he’s looking more for $8M a year than slightly over 6.

  59. 59 Donald Kalinowski said at 10:31 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Dallas offered 4 years and $16 million. Which is a bit insulting IMO.

  60. 60 Jernst said at 10:55 PM on March 9th, 2015:

So whats he end up getting? 4 years $20mil? Although, I doubt Murray lasts even close to that. Most likely his career goes down fast. But, you can make a good case that if we were giving 32 year old Gore essentially a 2 year $7.5mil contract, a 2 year $10mil deal for Murray wouldn’t be unreasonable.

Still hoping we see a second young CB, FS, G, WR. I would be fine putting the rest into reupping our own guys. I am ill thinking about blowing massive pics or more of our players on MM. I would have loved to see us fill these holes in FA and truly get back to bpa. I much would have preferred taking Petty and giving Foles another year to see what we have if we keep him upright.

  77. 77 Greg Richards said at 10:52 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Keep in mind that they may want to use some of this FA money to extend Cox and Kendricks. Foles and Boykin are also possibilities although most, including myself, believe they’re on the way out.

  78. 78 Christopher Miller said at 10:56 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Still baffled why they won’t give Boykin a chance to compete for the other CB spot. If he plays well, we are good, if he can’t hold up, we have a better shot at keeping him in his nickel role. I get Chip has his prototype build, but this is a guy on the roster already. Why not just let him compete.

  79. 79 Mitchell said at 11:00 PM on March 9th, 2015:

He competes everyday in practice. The coaches can see what he can and cannot do. I don’t think there is a conspiracy where the Chip is holding Boykin back from the outside where he can be amazing. That being said, it is frustrating he couldn’t beat out the slop that was in front of him.

  82. 82 Anders said at 4:49 AM on March 10th, 2015:

My hope is Boykin gets a chance on the outside next year. Our new DB coach just coached Cliff Harris, so I think his input might be valuable in that regard.

Have Boykin on the outside on standard downs and then move him inside in nickle and have Carroll play outside in nickle, then in Dime you can either use a 3rd safety or Watkins for the dime pseodu LB role Carroll played last year.

If we do not sign another safety, I hope Watkins is moved to safety. He fits the mold of what we want and we could have the following on the field in dime

    Carroll-Jenkins-Watkins-Maxwell
    Wolff-Alonso-Kendricks-Boykin
Curry-Cox-Graham (in dime in want the better pass rusher in Graham over Barwin)

Wolff would be great in dime as the 3rd safety with his speed and size (and yes, I think Wolff will be back healthy and play significant amount of snaps in nickle/dime role to begin and might even end up as the starter after the bye).

  83. 83 James Adair said at 10:45 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Wait? How many sacks did Barwin have last year again? I’d much rather have Barwin in there than Wolff.

  84. 84 Sean Stott said at 10:54 PM on March 9th, 2015:

So happy about BG. So happy about not getting Gore.

It would have been nice if they could retain Maclin. I don’t understand why they would throw that variable into the equation.

  85. 85 GEAGLE said at 10:57 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Last year the Eagles didn’t leak a single thing, now we practically know the first wave of free agency before the market opens…, what led to such a drastic change in M.O?

Every team is leaking Intel this year but it’s not like all the teams were secretive like us last year. There were still tons of accurate leaks last year involved with the other teams, but this year we are starting to leak all types of news..
    ..
What led to this change? Are there people in novacare who are pro Howie and leaking behind chips back? It’s easy to just blame it on the agents using leaks as leverage, but that’s not exactly a brand new technique agents just thought of this year…agents have always been doing this, but it seemed like Howie was able to keep them quiet

What has changed? Especially when we know it’s not like we have a coach who is a blabber mouth, Chip was quoted a bunch of times when addressing bogus rumors that “He Doesn’t talk to anyone”…. So what has changed?
    ….
Another obvious change is we seem to no longer think players who reach the age of 30 are untouchable.

And there seems to be a portion of fans who think chip plans on using to draft to target a certain player or two, while we build through free agency which is pretty much the opposite of how GMs think a Super Bowl team is built..

Any other operational changes we notice now that chip is the big baller shot caller?

  86. 86 oreofestar said at 11:01 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Really wr don’t know much about Gore and someone speculated maybe the whole think was for leverage with Indy and Max kinda went and told everyone he was signing with us so yeah

  87. 87 Donald Kalinowski said at 11:01 PM on March 9th, 2015:

It’s kind of obvious that we were targeting Maxwell. Best CB on the market and had the size Chip was looking for.

  89. 89 GEAGLE said at 11:05 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Think that’s fair to say considering not a single report linking us to him

  90. 90 Anders said at 4:43 AM on March 10th, 2015:

The Eagles them self hasnt leaked anything, hell less than 2 hours before we signed Graham, the Eagles beat writers still thought he was leaving.

Maxwell told a reporter from ESPN and Gore might have been his agent.

Also when you go after top tier guys like Maxwell, the info will get out fast compared to when you go after the Connor Barwin’s of the world.

I bet the Eagles have framework with at least a couple of FAs we do not know of yet. I mean we was apperently pretty close to sign Dan Skuta before we signed Graham, but nobody knew anything.

  91. 91 ICDogg said at 10:57 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Probably my favorite FA still unaccounted for is a guy we don’t really need (NT Dan Williams)

  92. 92 Donald Kalinowski said at 11:00 PM on March 9th, 2015:

I still want another OLB, and CB along with a S, WR, and OG. Free agency is not enough. We need draft picks

  93. 93 Mitchell said at 11:07 PM on March 9th, 2015:

We have Barwin, MSII, Graham and Long as our OLB’s. I would think another OLB would come in the draft if we want another because we signed Graham as our predator. We aren’t going to go out and sign someone way better than him. Graham is our rusher now and we need to be able to either, A. develop MSII or B. draft another OLB with upside we like. We have a true #1 CB in Maxwell now and I would think we could get at least Carrol or Watkins starting at the other spot with another 3rd/4th round corner for development. Safety is the real kicker and I believe we do need to sign another one. Moore or Searcy, whatever, we just need someone marginally better than Allen and let Reynolds and Wolfe do, well, something. If those two are not trusted for the long term, grab another UDFA or 4th rounder for development. WR probably needs to be addressed during the draft unless we can get a stopgap like Johnson(?). If it is addressed in the draft, my vote is for Strong. The final piece is OG. As D3FB said in the last post, we have Tobin, Graf and Barbre now. I believe some have said we may have interest in an OL from the Raiders? Also, there is Cooper from Arizona who is going to sign Iupati. Possible trade scenario there with a Howie Special. Just my 2 cents.

  94. 94 BreakinAnklez said at 11:28 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Agreed on all points here. I’d add Gipson to the mix. I’d give up a 2nd for him.

  95. 95 Mitchell said at 11:49 PM on March 9th, 2015:

We could do so much if we aren’t going all in for Mariotta. However, if it doesn’t cost EVERYTHING, we cans still do a lot in the draft. For instance if we give Tampa Foles, our 1st this year and next, we still have several options. I think this is a fair trade, of course, as someone said earlier, it all depends on what Foles is worth.

  96. 96 D3FB said at 12:46 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Browns have cap room to match any offer.

  97. 97 BreakinAnklez said at 10:34 AM on March 10th, 2015:

We had cap room to match any offer for Maclin…we didn’t. What’s your point? Just because they have room doesn’t mean they would be willing to invest it.

  98. 98 D3FB said at 3:27 PM on March 10th, 2015:

They have like 50 million in cap room, haven’t really brought in any big names. It’s not like they are tight against the cap and you can just offer ok money and a second round pick. You’re going to have to overpay to the point that the team that knows him best goes “nah you can have him” and give up a second round pick. There is a reason why RFA’s don’t move.

  99. 99 oreofestar said at 11:10 PM on March 9th, 2015:

S we absolutely need to buy not draft, I’d like to pick up a wr but options are limited, CB2 is less important than the other 2 for me but if House is still obtainable than go but I’m thinking draft here, and I think we end up drafting a guard. Searcy, Johnson, Draft, Draft

  103. 103 Jernst said at 11:07 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Cary is not bad if he has safeties that can cover up all the times he get’s toasted deep because he doesn’t have enough speed to run with fast WRs down the field. Seems like a good fit for Seattle. Even tho they stress not getting beat deep. A lot of Cary’s issues disappear when Earl Thomas is playing deep center field instead of Nate Allen.

  104. 104 oreofestar said at 11:08 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Yes and like our defensive backfield, unless we learn how to draft and develop OLB’s we are gonna be stuck with square pegs in round holes like Graham. Who knows though, maybe MSII and Graham can combine to be a huge surprise for us this year with a combine sack total of around 22.

  157. 157 bsuperfi said at 12:06 AM on March 10th, 2015:

MSII is key to the BG signing. He may turn out to be a waste of a first round pick, but there’s still time. Olbs can take a little to develop, and the team knew he was athletic and productive but raw. BG is a nice use of resources here. He hedges our bet with MSII given the lack of of ability to get in the field last season.

BG doesn’t break the bank, we know him and he’s familiar with the system, and I think its more a question of whether BG will be great because of his pass rush skills or good enough. Plus, the olb market isn’t strong, and BG is from Michigan. Given the situation, seems like a really solid move to me.

  201. 201 wee2424 said at 12:49 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Disagree. How many times did he hold out on Jets for more money? Did get Tampa for alot of money which wasn’t his fault. Like you said, traded. Actually it was his fault the way he consistently pushed Jets for more money. It was like every other year he was holding out. Gets to NE, knowing he is essentially signing a one year check. Gets payed, wins a SB, Pats can’t afford him now so he is going to head to another team for monster money. I’m not saying he is a bad person. He seems to be a good guy off the field, good work ethic, and plays his heart out. However there is no such thing as a discount with him and he will hop from team to team to get more money. Even when he is on a multi year deal he holds out. He has every right to do this considering he is the best. But his track record says mercenary.

  205. 205 wee2424 said at 11:57 PM on March 9th, 2015:

I think after safety you have to go WR, RB, or G. No way you are going to fill all three of those positions with starters in draft.

  207. 207 wee2424 said at 1:01 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Safety and WR are most important right now. I’m really hoping for Andre Johnson. RB and G may be addressed in draft. I think Carroll may be good as our 2, considering the defense he will be surrounded by.

  208. 208 Mitchell said at 12:00 AM on March 10th, 2015:

No, but the good news is, those are becoming increasingly easy to fill with rookies.

  209. 209 wee2424 said at 12:41 AM on March 10th, 2015:

True. I bet you can find a good RB that can run for some serious yards. It’s a deep WR draft so you can get a good WR. Not a deep Oline draft, but guards aren’t too hard to find. The problem however is that these 3 positions are so thin and devoid of talent that we cannot count on a rookie to help us enough at all 3 spots. Maybe G and RB, and even though it’s a deep WR draft it just makes me nervous starting a rookie next to Cooper. I’m really hoping for Andre Johnson. Chip Kelly type of WR that shouldn’t be to expensive. Good stop gap for a year or two. Might even be an immediate upgrade over Maclin for a year or so.

  210. 210 wee2424 said at 11:55 PM on March 9th, 2015:

Nnamdi got a good reputation as a shut down corner early and then hid in the raiders secondary where everyone avoided him. Maxwell is four years younger, in his prime, and just hitting his stride as a player. And, has spent the past year and half getting targetted more than anyone else because everyone avoids Sherman.

Too much. I think if it were to go around 6.5 with injury clauses then maybe pull the trigger. Doubt it gets down to that. The thing is if the market for him is that slow for whatever reason then it will definitely drive his asking price down. At that point he just may go back to the Cowgirls.

Devils advocate here. I was behind Kelly 100%. We didn’t retain Maclin. I was upset with that. Let it go. Got Maxwell, overpayed but we knew that had to happen. Was supposed to get Gore, he had cold feet and backed out. Outbid NE, and McCourty stayed with them. I was mildly surprised at that considering reports had it he was our top priority. Resigned Graham, happy with that. Liked the Shady deal as long as adequate replacement was found. Thought Gore would be perfect. Going into FA we had holes, it seems as though they were just traded off for more holes. There was a report that stated FA especially on offense may be leary of signing with us. I didn’t believe it, but is it now possible there may be some truth to it? You aren’t really hearing about other players being interested in the Birds right now. I will be the first to say that necessarily doesn’t mean a damn thing though. I did think Andre Johnson to us made sense for both parties. Rumor has it he is interested in four teams, neither of them are us. Again that may or may not mean anything at this point. I just think that the next few days are going to be truly defining for this franchise. If the plan is to get MM you cannot have this many holes on the roster due to the fact you will be trading away your highest picks. I feel confident safety will be filled in FA. If that is all that is done you better hit good in the draft if you don’t go after MM. This off season is either going to really set this franchise back or make it. Sort of scary really. The feeling is that FA is not going how the FO thought it would.

Of course. However there is what you want, what you expect, and this may be a little rougher then I thought. I’m aware there are 31 other teams and what not. I’m aware plans barely go right in FA. But don’t sit here and tell me that not getting your top priority, losing Maclin, having Gore then losing him is close to what they wanted or expected. No, I think it files under the this is going a little rougher then I thought category.

  287. 287 Anders said at 9:26 AM on March 10th, 2015:

We lost 2 out 4 of the people I wanted back and one of them choice to take less money to keep playing for his home original team.

Also not getting McCourty hurts way more for me than losing Maclin, as I think Kelly can work fine with Huff instead.

I love Gore the player, but thought his age and the potential money was more than I liked, so Im pretty meh about it.

I will be disappointed if we do not sign one of Moore or Searcy and I would be ecstatic if we got House on top of one of those 2.

  291. 291 Jernst said at 9:14 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Agree with everything you said. I think the hesitancy of some offensive players to sign with us has more to do with uncertainty at the QB position and the fact that we don’t want to spend top dollar rather than with Chip. If I’m a young offensive weapon, I’d love to play in the Eagles offense and put up huge numbers. If the Eagles don’t pay me for my production, I can easily parlay my ridiculous numbers into another huge pay day with another bonus and more guaranteed money from another team. Do you think Maclin gets a huge $11mil deal if he played for the Chiefs last year on a one year deal and put up 65 catches for 850 yards and 2TDs?

  292. 292 RobNE said at 9:19 AM on March 10th, 2015:

If Randall Cobb is worth $10mil and Maclin worth $11mil+ then it’s a fair assumption that Maxwell would be worth $10mil+ to a team with no CBs on it’s roster and a glaring hole at the position with a division full of pro-bowl quality WRs.

    …..
Frank Gore — said it a million times — I don’t understand how Grandpa Gore is a good idea AND throw in 7.5 mil? People like to say “stop gap” — that’s not a stop gap. A stop gap would be when you ALREADY have your “young gun” in place. This nostalgia about Gore I get, I like him. WAS a solid, main threat. That doesn’t mean I want him because I liked him 3 years ago.
    …..
Next Grandpa up — Andre Johnson. I get that. We have two young guys at WR and warm bodies after them. Not something I’d want to be honest. Old and broken most of the time. We’re still rebuilding(no matter how many times people say Chips want to win NOW). Unless a solid(read, not old and broken) WR comes our way — draft him.

  348. 348 GEAGLE said at 8:28 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I saw some good in signing Gore, but I also saw the bad……. truth is, signing Gore really only makes sense if Foles is the guy next year. If its sanchez or a rookie, we wont be contenders the next two years which kind of made signing Gore a solid move, but a pointless move…..if we are going young at QB, id rather go with a rookie RB, who still has a chance of being here once our rookie QB is ready to contend.. not to mention the money we would save

also think chips offense and the practice style that comes with it is a young mans game…

  349. 349 eagleyankfan said at 8:33 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I’m with you here. You can’t “mix and match” your vision. Either go young and rebuild or restock and go for it. You can’t restock and go for it without Foles.

  350. 350 GEAGLE said at 9:20 AM on March 10th, 2015:

You know where I stand, losing Foles IMO is just stupidity..
    ..
with that said, I try to atleast see the angles and the different strengths and weaknesses for each option, so if Im being honest, I can atleast see some positives in going with the seahawks model of stack your team around the QB position, so that its good enough to carry your rookie QB and give you a chance to win right away like rothlisberger and Wilson were able to do. A positive about going with a rook instead of the RAINMAKER is that instead of paying Foles we have a QB on a rookie deal for 4-5 more years allowing us to spend a little more money on the other positions then most teams who have like 15mil in cap space tied into their starting QB….. so while i think giving up on foles is just insanity, i can atleast see some strengths with the other options…

the problem is, the Eagles arent stacking a team around the QB position this offseason. They are trying to build a quality defense but seattle and the steelers didnt win a superbowl with a rookie just off defense.. they had quality offenses in place around the rookie, that gave a rookie a chance to compete right away while only being asked to be a game manager..

but what we are doing now, makes no sense at all… try to stack the defense, but rebuild atleast a 3rd of your offense? Id be thrilled to watch a much improved defense next year, but the offense isnt good enough to win with a rookie… this isnt the seahawk model. russell wilson had a top RB, strong OL carrying him on offense… we have a hole at RG, no starting RB, Coop is our #1 WR…. and there are no #1 WR left, no top RGs available, and the RB situation doesnt look that encouraging..
    ..
so if you were going to stack the defense this year and go with a rookie next year, we should have tried to keep our offense in place for the rookie… instead we see some key holes in our offense right now, and rumors about us not having many draft picks this year to fill the holes on offense….
    ..
so I really have no clue what they are thinking right now…. I dont understand what model they are following.
    ..
there were assumptions that we were going with a new model, build thru free agency so you can trade away all your picks to get the QB you want, problem is there havent been many teams that were able to buy SB’s in free agency… every GM to ever work in this league believes in building thru the draft…. but even if we wanted to go with that plan, we have to many holes that need addressing to trade away key draft picks for a QB..
    ..
so i really struggle understanding what they are thinking at novacare these days… hopefully the 2nd and 3rd wave of free agency provides a little clarity

  351. 351 RobNE said at 9:26 AM on March 10th, 2015:

he got personnel control. He is exercising it. He doesn’t want to spend tons of $$$ on WR and RB especially when he doesn’t think either of those deserve it. If that means he doesn’t win a SB this year, so be it. But that’s better than locking yourself into players you don’t want at higher prices.

Look at this as year 1 rather than year 3 and it makes more sense. They weren’t one player away from a SB, I think this is some revisionist history here.

    ..
are Iupati and Cooper projected as the starting Guards, or do they have a Guard that puts Cooper on the bench?

Speaking of the Cadrinals, im scared to death that they are going to get AP to stick behind Iupati…i cant stomach that scum, bruce arians getting his hands on AP… Id almost just try to trade for him to block the cardinals from getting him…. next season would be unbearable with Bruce arians getting AP…. someone cock block him please, other then Jerry Jones of course…

Cole was going to be too expensive, and we cut Herremans who looked like he was losing his spot anyway. He didn’t overpay for Mac and made a play for McCourty.

  372. 372 Dominik said at 10:21 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Same here. I don’t blindly trust Chip, he needs to prove himself as talent evaluator. Thing is, that’s part of the GM job I think he can handle. He needed evaluation skills in College for recruiting, so he has a lot of experience in that regard. Not much in the NFL, but experience.

He didn’t have experience at all with the Salary Cap and the value questions a Salary Cap raises. I feared Chip there, because he seemed like a players coach who has a hard time being tough on players he likes.

So far this Offseason, this doesn’t seem to be the case. His red wedding a week ago + being disciplined with Mac shows me that he does understand the business and value side of being a GM.

At the moment, there are 2 team unfriendly contracts with players Chip loves. Celeks contract is high, but at least kind of reasonable. Meco, I have no idea why there wasn’t a pay cut yet. Only reason I can think of: they want to see how the rehab goes. But if Chip is really trading Kendricks for MM, he would lose ton of leverage.

But Chip proved he can get rid of vets he likes (Cole, Todd) if the money isn’t right in his opinion. So I don’t fear Meco with 6.9m in the books as much as I feared it two weeks ago.

  373. 373 GEAGLE said at 11:01 AM on March 10th, 2015:

we already rocked this locker room so much, that I hope he just cuts Celek and Meco now, two players i really like. all the respected players we already lost, whats adding Meco and Celek to the mix really going to change? rather get it all out of the way now, so we can get over this and then start building something… instead of Rocking the locker room like this, and next year make big cuts that will hurt our locker room like Meco or Celek

lets do it all now, put it behind us and start building hte next era of eagles…. if we cut Celek and Meco now, the only other tough cuts that will have to be made in the future will be mathis and Jason Peters..

  374. 374 Dominik said at 11:13 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I don’t think Chip rocked the locker room. Will players be upset about losing Maclin? Very possibe. But they also know it’s a business and when they read about the 11m per, I’m sure they understand that.

Chip wanted to bring in Gore, who seems to be one hell of a guy and a leader.

Todd and Cole were business decisions every franchise makes. He wanted to get younger at OLB and OG, I get that.

And players also understand what kind of contract Shady had. Just look at Todds reaction pre FA. “What’s Shadys cap hit?” 12m. “Ohhhh. I hope for him he gets the money.”

    ..
He has seen Nick Foles every single day for two years in practice, and he knows MM so well that its not realistic to think he will drastically botch the evaluation of MM… chip isnt a stupid man, he will know how much better we can build this team if we stay with Nick, so if this guy is still telling me that this kid is so much better then Nick that its worth slowing down the building of the rest of the roster, then so be it…

but MM and Foles are both still developing QBs, i will have a problem with this offseason if we go into the season with glaring weaknesses at important position that will have ripple effects on the offense and not put whichever young QB in the best position to succeed…. I cant be confident going into the season with Barbre or Tobin fighting for the starting Guard spot… if we are going to devalue a bunch of positions because our system is so great, fine… but there are certain positions you cant devalue no matter what your offensive scheme is…
    ..
MM or NF both are developing QBs, and they need a top OL in front of them especially if you are going to water down their weapons….i also dont have much confidence in going into the season projecting someone on our roster starting at Guard when i know how much we are already investing in the OL, yet we still felt the need to throw some big coin at a free agent Guard…… I also need them to do something with the starting safety spot…. i cant do another year of it being a major weakness and i dont want anyone in this draft as a starting safety in september……

there is a chance we still fill a few needs and get the rest taken care of in the draft, which would make this a Successful offseason… its just worrisome when you dont know what to think in terms of how many draft picks we will even have next month…. i dont like some of the moves we made in terms of our culture and Locker room…. but in terms of on the field ability in relation to price tag, if i remove the QB decision from the equation I still see a chance to come out of this with a succesful offseason

  376. 376 Avery Greene said at 11:05 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I still maintain that MM is a smoke screen. But, if he believes this guy is special, then go get him.

After the 1st round we will have a better idea of what the future holds. I could see them going after Hundley and develop him behind Foles/Sanchez. Maybe Barkley becomes that guy, or not.

The thing is, no one knows.

  377. 377 GEAGLE said at 11:16 AM on March 10th, 2015:

i dont believe that crap either… i just try to see the angles for all the options… there is a strength and a weakness to every decision regardless whether i believe thats our direction or not, important to understand all our options, especially the ones that we dont like

  378. 378 Dominik said at 11:06 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Glad you’re coming down from your Maclin rage, Geag.

When it comes to the O-Line, one just has to think that Chip has a plan. If there are two things on Offense he absolutely does not devalue, it’s QB and OL. I think it’s possible that one of the first FA signings will be a Guard. Or, Chip knows which draft picks he would send away in a MM trade and knows that there will be a Guard in round 3 or 4 that he likes as a starter.

I’m not saying it will be a big name OG, but I think Chip doesn’t play games with his O-Line. I think Chip was really angry at Howie not getting a OL in the last draft.

Chip was very clear that he didn’t like our secondary last year. He didn’t even want to talk with Cary about a new contract. We would have paid 20m for Maxwell and McCourty.

I think Chip was also really pissed about our OL depth last year (after Barbre). He will fix this.

  380. 380 Anders said at 9:13 AM on March 10th, 2015:

omg, Cary Williams just signed a bigger deal with the Hawks than he signed with us oO

  381. 381 Avery Greene said at 9:15 AM on March 10th, 2015:

That’s funny. They could have kept Maxwell, but I think they overplayed their hand. They wanted in when they saw other teams going after him, I think they misread Max’s market.

  382. 382 GEAGLE said at 9:59 AM on March 10th, 2015:

wouldnt be surprised to see Cary look good playing in that secondary… Can think of so many plays where Nate Allen or Chung didnt do their job, which made Cary look bad even if maybe it wasnt his fault.,….. he is going from one extreme to the next. From Playing with safeties who were so poor that at times contributed to him looking bad, to now playing with Safeties capable of probably making him look better then he really is..

good for him…. he certainly wont go down in Eagle history with the E Allens, Troy V, Sheldon, Bobby Taylors…… but I dont think he should be remembered as Nnamdi or DRC either….. plenty of faults, plenty of frustrating plays and words that came out of his mouth…. but one thing I will always appreciate is he arrived after 2012 which was the most embarrassing display of gutless eagle defense I have ever seen. 2012 defense is like my nightmare.. I do appreciate him coming here, seeing such a soft defense and immediately tried to put some teeth back into our defense.. tried to switch our young defenders mentailty from the soft 2012 defense they were a part of, to a defense that was going to atleast play tough and not backdown…. for that, i will appreciate him, but he was always just a stop gap, and he played that role for us until we were able to get Byron Maxwell,.i guess Mission accomplished?

  383. 383 oreofestar said at 10:01 AM on March 10th, 2015:

  384. 384 GEAGLE said at 10:23 AM on March 10th, 2015:

i wish…. Searcy or Tashuan Gipson.

anyone know the timeline for trying to sign Restricted free agents to an offer sheet? what I mean is, if teams were going to try and sign RFAs to offer sheet trying to poach them away, i assume we would have heard about it by now…. how many days left do teams realistically have to sign RFA’s to offer sheets?

  385. 385 Anders said at 10:03 AM on March 10th, 2015:

My biggest problem with Cary isnt really going to be fixed by playing for Seattle and that called been a phony fake tough guy.

  386. 386 GEAGLE said at 10:18 AM on March 10th, 2015:

i doubt anyone actually likes that about him… he isnt a beast against the run, but he doesnt run away all the time the way DRC did when he saw a RB coming…
    ..
but half that seattle team acts a fool anyway. His personality should fit right in…plus Kam Chancellor is no fake tough guy, i could see him putting a new free agent in his place quickily if he is hurting the defense with stupidity

  387. 387 Anders said at 10:22 AM on March 10th, 2015:

yea, but Cary Williams will always be like that, you cant chance his personality.

  388. 388 GEAGLE said at 10:25 AM on March 10th, 2015:

certainly will always have a level of stupidity to his game… if he had to join a new secondary, he went to the perfect one considering how much crap refs allow that secondary to get away with….

  389. 389 A_T_G said at 9:15 AM on March 10th, 2015:

That must speak to the current economic climate and not to teams’ confidence in his ability.

  390. 390 Anders said at 9:19 AM on March 10th, 2015:

  392. 392 Anders said at 9:18 AM on March 10th, 2015:

no, but we original signed Williams for 3 year 17 mill, Hawks gave Williams 3 years and 18 mill

  393. 393 Dominik said at 10:30 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Yes, but to be honest: we never intended to pay him the 3rd year. So if the Hawks do the same and structure it accordingly, they maybe not overpay him in the end.

All that matters are guar. and structure in the end.

yup..fair enough… we pretend to care about culture, yet the same usual suspects win superbowls taking advantage of picking up a super talented scumbag cheap that the public practically forced the previous team to get rid of… its such a joke. Id rather see the Panthers tell america to piss off and Keep Hardy since some ofther team is about to profit off his talents at half the price of what the Panthers had to give him….instead public forces a franchise to cut a super talent after he does something wrong, and the same exact teams keep profiting from it and the public doesnt say a word condeming the next team that gets him at a discount price, because those teams are usuallythe elite contenders and the contending franchises get away with everything

The Cowboys turned $10.2 million of Smith’s 2015 base salary of $11.039 million into a signing bonus.

Mabye they’re making room for AP…?!

  413. 413 oreofestar said at 9:59 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Yeah this happened yesterday, they still have a lot of guys to sign. They are at roughly 9mil with his move but Mcclain, Murray, draft picks, Selvie, Durant, Carter etc.

  414. 414 BreakinAnklez said at 10:01 AM on March 10th, 2015:

  415. 415 oreofestar said at 10:02 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Currently their D is barren, they had 300k in cap space so they weren’t going to be able to do anything including sign picks, this move was needed to get them any breathing room at all

  416. 416 GEAGLE said at 10:13 AM on March 10th, 2015:

basically they have to sign an entire LB group with the exception of Humpty Dumpty sean Lee… “All of Jerrys Doctors and All of Jerrys trainers, couldnt put humpty Lee back together again”

they have to pay a RB…i assume the secondary could use some help, without me knowing the contract situation of the DBs..
    ….
need AP to get the hell away from the NFC…. if he ends up in the greasy slimy dirty hands of Jerry or Bruce Arians im going to be sick to my stomach next year… The Colts have had so many RB that you would think they would stop screwing around with that position trying to poach 32yr olds away from the Eagles… Colts need to man up and go get AP… AP instantly makes them a SB contender.. Andrew Lucks play actions off of AP would be scary.
I dont care about losing Gore, I care that an AFC team needs a RB bad enough to not let the cardinals or Cowboys get him..

Another sleeper team I would love to see is Miami…. need AP to get out of the NFC, since we wont trade for him

Reworking normally never does a contract any good (out of a teams perspective). So, that’s a good thing.

On the other hand: the Smith contract was really team friendly. So at least we can hope the contract won’t be team friendly in a year or two. πŸ˜‰

  422. 422 eagleyankfan said at 10:57 AM on March 10th, 2015:

  423. 423 Dominik said at 11:20 AM on March 10th, 2015:

The players need to be ok with it. So that means there has to be an advantage for them. That means, teams gain a short term gain for a long term loss.

I have no problem with that.

  427. 427 oreofestar said at 10:06 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Okay I’m just going to say it. I want Demarco Murray. I have a friend who is a Cowboy fan so I end up watching just about all of their games. He’s a beast…he’s in his prime. Is the knock on him really that he had a lot of carries last year? He was durable last year as well, and he’s pissed off at the cowboys.

  434. 434 Mitchell said at 10:13 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Backs with that many carries, historically, fall off a cliff and I think that, coupled with his previous injury history, is scaring a lot of teams off.

Yeh, I’m all for it, as long as we don’t give him something dumb like 8 mil a year. Idk what a good number for him would be? 4 mil? I feel bad saying it because it’s like a slap in the face after what he did last year.

  437. 437 myartz04 said at 10:17 AM on March 10th, 2015:

POLK!!!! “Baby Huey”, rumble young man rumble… Runs like a beast, pass blocks, very under rated pass catcher…I want Polk to get atleast 10 carries every game. Sproles has 3rd down on Lock…i would just spend one of our 4th rounders and pay him 500k the next 4 years to get me to the zeke Elliot sweepsteaks. really would like to prioritize making him and eagle..
    ..
then again, there is already 1 kid in the 2015 draft that chip will feel like he HAS to HAVE, so im not sure we can go into a draft making sure we get 2 specific players… 1 is doable, but 2 is unrealistic…
    ..
My only concern with us being able to target going up to get Zeke is that…….. will bet you right now and give you 5-1 odds that 13 months from now chip kelly is going to draft 3-4 DE Deforest Buckner… I will take any bet right now, a year away give anyone 5-1 odds, that regardless of what the other teams do, chip will draft Deforrest Buckner as early as it takes to secure him…ESPECIALLY when Vinny Curry walks in free agency….
    ..
You can buy a Buckner eagle jersey right now and its a safer investment then buying any of our veterans jersey with the way Chip been swinging the axe

  449. 449 Tumtum said at 10:52 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Talk about a guy who just gets the yards that are there. He won’t wow you, but every once in a while he will make a guy miss or break a tackle. Hit the hole every time last year and just ran where he was supposed to. Not to mention he is a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield some.

  457. 457 Alistair Middlemiss said at 10:39 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I would honestly prefer Hundley – similar upside at greater risk, but i think if you spent 3 years drafting QB’s at 20 you would have just as much chance of hitting as you have with Mariota.

  458. 458 RobNE said at 10:42 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I’m not smart enough to evaluate and project, but if Chip wants MM and makes a somewhat reasonable, not give away drafts for him trade, then I am all for it. QB is too important. If this is Chip’s guy, great.

  459. 459 Alistair Middlemiss said at 10:50 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I understand that – the caveat i that i have is that drafting QB’s is a crapshoot. High picks bust ALL the time, or don’t live up to billing. There is so much projection to the NFL game – and even if you have coached him you have no idea if he can ‘evolve’ into a NFL QB. I like Mariota as a prospect but unless the Titans fall in love with Foles then i think it will be expensive.

  460. 460 RobNE said at 10:54 AM on March 10th, 2015:

right there is so much projection, but who better to make the bet than Chip on MM. It would even be different if Chip were a defensive coach. But we have a lot of variables aligning themselves where Chip knows the true odds and values better than the actual odds/values. That doesn’t mean the outcome is certain, but I like Chip making this particular bet.

  482. 482 ACViking said at 12:00 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Since the season ended, the only players on the Eagles who could make a trade up from 20 to 1 work have been Kendricks, Cox, and LJ.

[Never thought Foles alone, with picks, gets it done.]

Trading Kendricks could be rationalized publicly, even if falsely: “We have Alonso and Ryans, plus it hurt to part with MK but an ILB vs. a QB is not a hard choice, and (via sources) MK lacks the ideal H/W.”

But not Cox or LJ. Especially LJ.

Not only are they both still on rookie contracts.

They are better than any player in the last two drafts at their positions.

The demand for Cox or LJ always seemed like the problem in trying to get from 20 to 1 or 2.

Even an insane number of picks is a tough sell because TB or TN would have to drop down beyond where they could be sure of getting a 1st Rd value player.

Seemed that way in early January. Still apparently is.

  483. 483 RobNE said at 12:04 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Let’s just agree that football players aren’t “warriors” and football coaches would need to reach an almost unattainable level of footballing to be a “genius”.

Also two 10 win seasons in your first two seasons without “his guy” at QB is impressive on its own.

  538. 538 Iskar36 said at 11:38 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I couldn’t agree with this more. I don’t think I have seen a coach associated with greatness as quickly and automatically as Chip Kelly, and thus far it isn’t warnted. so far, what Chip Kelly has been is unique. Innovative is another fair word To describe Chip. What he has not yet proven is if he is GREAT. He has to show that his ideas and systems can lead to sustained success. Two 10 win seasons are nice but it includes a season without a playoff birth and also includes no playoff wins. We still are wondering if he can be successful against good competition. Having said all that, I’m not trying to say Chip isn’t doing well. My issue is that particularly on this site, people emphasize the need to be patient when guys don’t perform immediatley. While I fully agree with that mindset, I think it also holds true at the other extreme. Going from the last year with AR to a 10 win season was an impressive team accomplishment, but we need to be patient with calling a coach great when he hasn’t had NFL accomplishments just yet.

  539. 539 GEAGLE said at 11:27 AM on March 10th, 2015:

i dont like the genius talk, its premature… genius is GREATNESS… this man has been good, but certainly has never won anything that makes him great, not at the college level and not at the NFL level…think he is a very good coach who has a chance at doing great things, but he isnt there yet… for all his bright ideas and great coaching, evaluations skills he still isnt a champion

Genius like Mozart arent just good, or very good, or have potential to be great…
    ,.,,
for now, Chip is a good “different” coach with potential to do some great things…but until then, “different” doesnt equal “genius”… Genius is extraordinary greatness realized

Pretty much the way I feel. Kelly has shown that he can win to some degree in the NFL and that his offensive scheme is effective with relatively talented people.

Genius gets thrown around far too often. I would call Kelly a competent NFL coach who has shown over his first 2 years that he can make it in the league. Doesn’t sound praiseworthy but a lot of talented individuals have floundered in a similar situation.

If I’m a College coach/athletic director, I will push for my Pro Day not interacting with FA. Of course there’s a position coach/scout there, but it can’t hurt if the real decision makers, the GMs and HCs, at least have a chance to be there. No decision maker will travel at the moment.

  578. 578 xeynon said at 11:38 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Food for thought: Byron Maxwell ranked 45th among NFL cornerbacks last year with an opposing QB rating against of 81. Cary Williams ranked 56th with a rating of 85. Maxwell is being paid 4 million dollars more than Williams on the basis of a track record indicating he’s a similarly middling player and he’s been replaced in Seattle by… You guessed it – Cary Williams. Yet we let a guy who was statistically a top 10 NFL receiver walk because we didn’t want to overpay him.

The more of this offseason unfolds, the less happy with it I am. I think it’s quite possible Chip is completely in over his head as an NFL personnel guy and the team is going to suffer badly for it. I don’t understand the cockeyed optimism of the Chip backers.

  579. 579 Avery Greene said at 11:41 AM on March 10th, 2015:

To be fair, when you can pick on Fletcher as easy as opposing QBs did, you don’t need to test Williams as much. But trust me, Maxwell is far better than Williams.

Williams avoids tackling and mixing it up with RBs. His coverage is weak, and there were plenty of 1st down passes thrown at him. Not to mention his stupid penalties. He talks too much and doesn’t back it up.

I’m not sad Williams is gone, and we are definitely better off with Maxwell.

  580. 580 xeynon said at 11:47 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I’m not sad Williams is gone either. He is a decidedly mediocre player even leaving aside all the additional baggage you point out. But I think we badly overpaid Maxwell to replace him, while being unwilling to slightly overpay Maclin (who unlike Maxwell has proven himself a top 10 player at his position in our system). This makes me question whether Chip actually understands value as well as some people think he does.

  581. 581 RobNE said at 11:48 AM on March 10th, 2015:

he just doesn’t place value on the positions equally. He can think Maxwell is a 1A CB but that’s worth paying extra for, but paying Maclin # 1 WR money for a 1A WR is not worth it.

  582. 582 xeynon said at 11:54 AM on March 10th, 2015:

His historical level of play does not suggest that Maxwell is a 1A level player though. It suggests he is solidly a #2. Maclin, meanwhile, was a top 10 receiver last year. And Maclin is being overpaid by maybe 1-2 million dollars. Maxwell is being overpaid by 4-5 million.

  583. 583 RobNE said at 11:57 AM on March 10th, 2015:

ok just change the 1A in my answer next to Maxwell to a 2.

Also Chip sees Maclin was a top 10 in Chip’s offense. Chip discounts that. So maybe he thinks they are both #2’s. did we ever think Maclin was a true # 1 before last year? not even close, in fact we killed him for falling down before getting tackled.

  584. 584 anon said at 11:50 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Chip is great at creating yards on offense, so we don’t need megatron in order to be successful, MAC exceeded his last yardage total by like 500yds in one year under CK.

Its’ clear that we can’t do the same thing on defense, so we need to pay for playmakers there, especially since we have such strict measurable requirements for the scheme we played.

  585. 585 Avery Greene said at 11:51 AM on March 10th, 2015:

The last two SB teams won with average receivers. Seattle had a great defense, and the Patriots have Tom Brady.

Chip looks to be trying to improve the defense, since he doesn’t have a TB. Granted, we have a wide range of stories about what Chip wants at QB, but I won’t be surprised with an OLineman in the 1st couple of rounds in the draft.

My thinking would be looking at the Eagles today, keep improving the defense and get some more Olineman and make your run with talent around the QB rather than the QB making the talent like in Indy.

Belichik won with Cassel as his starter. He had a bunch of talent around him on defense and OL (I also think he had Moss too).

  586. 586 scratcherk said at 11:43 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I think you have to judge the pickup based on who was available. There were no top 5 CBs on the market. The Eagles got the top guy available.

  587. 587 CrackSammich said at 11:45 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Revis. Not saying we should be in any way interested in him–Just saying he’s available.

  588. 588 Iskar36 said at 11:50 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Yes and no. The market for Maxwell was set based on the available players, but in a year or two, we will look at his contract and compare it to the rest of the CBs in the league and no one is going to give a player a break because the market that year was weak or strong for the player. Once we are a year or so removed from the offseason, the market of this year will be irrelevant.

  589. 589 Alistair Middlemiss said at 11:45 AM on March 10th, 2015:

Also passer rating is crap stat to judge corners by. Seattle in zone gives up easy completions short of first down distance, but when maxwell tackles them 3 yard short of first down that is recorded as a failure not a success.

Look at more advanced metrics and they are not close.

  590. 590 xeynon said at 11:59 AM on March 10th, 2015:

I have not seen any metrics, advanced included, that suggest Maxwell is more than a solid NFL starter. And he’s being paid like more than that.

    Win-win-win-win

He was willing to give McCourty Earl Thomas money, basically. That’s a sign imho, like the money he gave Maxwell. Chip is as tired as we are about the defensive backfield. Let’s just hope he has a plan B, C and D.

All this talk about Kelly, it comes down to money, Eagles probably wouldn’t guarantee as much

  704. 704 Avery Greene said at 12:32 PM on March 10th, 2015:

If players are worried about coming here because of the overbearing approach, a couple things will happen.

    1) Chip will change and be “less overbearing
    2) Chip just gets young guys from college and stops worrying about FA

If you’re here and didn’t like the practice or doing things differently, then it’s their prerogative to move on. But I don’t see how anyone is at fault here. Chip is the CEO of this team and he has certain ways of doing things. You don’t go into a company and tell the CEO that what he does sucks. Either you adjust or move on.

  705. 705 peteike said at 12:38 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I refuse to buy into any of this anti chip stuff, all utter nonsense. These are old players who never were on the team. Ill let the vets who play for him make those calls.

  706. 706 Avery Greene said at 12:39 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Exactly. BG came back, and Cole would have come back but got more money elsewhere.

  707. 707 Tumtum said at 12:44 PM on March 10th, 2015:

So while I agree with you… I disagree with you. Chip doesn’t do things like any other coach these guys have ever had. The guys who don’t buy in are clearly going to take issue with the approach. I don’t think Trent would echo the anti-Chip sentiment, but the media isn’t just making these things up. Player make off-the-record comments and then they snowball. Give the media a SMALL known on a spicy subject, and they will run rampant about the unknown.

So while I think this is very over-blown, it has merit. It also certainly seems the Eagles are a less desirable FA destination than in years past. Not making good on big contracts probably has a role in that.

  708. 708 peteike said at 1:00 PM on March 10th, 2015:

too soon for any of that to really get solid traction imo. If so, they are over playing it. Also, not many coaches will make all their players happy and yes, Chips style and practice/tempo will turn some off. Just dont buy that its a problem at this point. They can all go to Buffalo with Rex then and be happy and lose

  709. 709 EagleNebula said at 1:05 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Less desirable in what sense? So far one of the main reasons FA have gone elsewhere has been $$$ and money almost always comes first. The few players resigning with their own team for less well, that is loyalty to their team, not any slight to the others. Can you document a case where the eagles outbid a player who went elsewhere (not including returning to the team they were already on)?

I hate the “overbearing” narrative about Kelly that has been created since yesterday. One of the big stories of free agency seems to be how much a dumpster fire the Eagles are, a fire built with McCoy being traded, ignited with Maclin leaving with jet fuel added with long-time faithful Gore fleeing us. So i cant help but hate this stuff over the past few days.

But i love the narrative that Kelly is going to try to win on offense with his system, his coaching ability and win on defense with investing in top talent. Strange to be excited about what is basically a salary cap management issue, but I think long term success could be had if Kelly focuses his GM duties trying to get and maintain a full defense, and focus his coaching scheming ability on offense (with a franchise QB and good o-line). Oh, so yes, all goes back to the QB we don’t have.

And, if teams can’t discuss contract parameters then what the hell are they supposed to talk about. Please…this is so dumb.

  794. 794 ACViking said at 1:37 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Don’t know if the “Legal Tampering Period” was an NFL creation or jointly created by the NFL and NFLPA. (Given the existence of a CBA, I’m guessing the LTP had to be approved by the NFLPA in a side-letter agreement.)

But I think the LTP benefits both sides. Players don’t have to take the first offer. They can shop offers. Teams can do likewise.

It’s a bit chaotic, for sure. But more teams can stay in the game with a player longer — which would seem like a good thing for the teams. And that would also seem to be a good thing for the players.

Tommy/Sam, what’s up with the 1.7M dead money charge overthecap has for Brandon Graham? It’s been on there for a while too.

  932. 932 Alistair Middlemiss said at 3:10 PM on March 10th, 2015:

They did not take his 5 year option last year, so that is the 1.7mil would have be prorated on a year 5 if it existed.

  933. 933 Anders said at 3:12 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Wrong, rookies from 2010 didnt have 5th year option, he just signed a 6 year rookie contract with the 6th year that voids

  934. 934 Anders said at 3:11 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Graham signed a 6 year rookie contract, where the 6th year automatically voids, it was done to spread out his signing bonus. Suh had a similar contract, his dead money is just 9 mill.

  935. 935 FairOaks said at 3:19 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Actually the Lions not once, but twice converted his yearly salary into prorated signing bonuses to spread out the cap hit. So the 9+ million of dead money the Lions have on Suh this year is the combination of his original bonus proration, plus one quarter of his 2012 salary, plus one third of his 2013 salary. Since those prorations count towards what the “current salary” is for the franchise tag (the offer must be at least 120% of that), Suh’s franchise tag number was astronomical. Converting salary to bonuses can help in the short term but it will bite you bad when it comes to the franchise tag.

So, Graham’s cap number for his new contract is 6M, but really it’s 7.7 million given that dead money (but that was unavoidable if he stayed or left).

  936. 936 Anders said at 3:21 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I was just pointing out that Suh also had a 6th year in his contract that automatically voided this year.

  937. 937 FairOaks said at 3:24 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Yep, he did. Like you said, that will be true for many of the 2010 first rounders signed under the old CBA. Suh’s 9M dead money wasn’t just the rookie bonus though — the Lions spread out a ton more salary onto that bogus 6th year to reduce previous years cap numbers and it bites back this year. I was just making that point πŸ˜‰

  940. 940 GEAGLE said at 3:21 PM on March 10th, 2015:

“linked to” means nothing to me. we only been linked to Devin, and Im sure we have 2nd and 3rd options… but the fact that someone got him for a petty 10mil, its prob fair to reach that conclusion..
    ..
ready to sign Rahim Moore, maybe Forsett, and just pack it up and end this free agency period for us… rather fill the roster with undrafted young players then sign free agents just for the hell of it….

and if it comes down to bringing back Nate Allen, dont you friggin dare!!! rather sign old ass Antrel Role as a stop gap for a year then ever see Nate Again… I dont want him anywhere near Maxwell, he will just get in thed way anyway.. fool our corner into a false sense of over the top help and never make a play, he will just get in MAxwells way…get him the hell out of here…

actually after seeing how poor we did in free agency, im surprised Maxwell isnt backing out of the deal

So brilliant that they have forgotten that Chip has several experienced football guys and money guys and assistants at his beck and call. They also are so smart they haven’t noticed several teams appear to be seriously revamping their rosters.
