Sanchez In, Maclin Out

Ugh.

Losing Maclin hurts. I’m glad the Eagles had the discipline not to just hand him a blank check, but I do hate to see him go. Mac hasn’t always been my favorite player, but he just had a career year and playing for Chip Kelly seemed to bring out the best in him.

There aren’t any star receivers to sign to replace him, but there are going to be some interesting options. We’ll get into that later.

Sanchez is a Chip Kelly favorite. And the team needed a backup QB. I’ll write a longer post on exactly what the move means.

No updates on any other CBs.  There is this on McCourty.

  7. 7 suthrneagle said at 11:52 PM on March 8th, 2015:

How about, he`s done pretty well with other people“s players. Now he`s putting together his own team. Let`s watch him put one together, work on it through the summer and show us what he`s done beginning Sept..

  8. 8 xeynon said at 12:07 AM on March 9th, 2015:

I will give him the season before making any definitive judgments.

But a strategy of bringing in guys who are old (Gore), are leaving an elite surrounding cast and being projected into a new system (Maxwell) or both has been tried before, and it fails more often than not. It failed in Philly as recently as 2011. It is doubly questionable when coupled with gutting the team of all its best current players as is happening now, and/or trading a huge amount of resources to acquire one player in the draft as it is rumored may happen with Mariota. It’s too early to declare this offseason a disaster, yes. But questioning/criticism is totally within reason given that Chip is pursuing a number of strategies that have really bad track records.

So we’ll grossly overpay our backup QB, but not our, with a wide margin, best wide receiver. It’ll be interesting to see what Mac got. Anything less than 11, I would have matche it.

  15. 15 Ben Hert said at 8:34 AM on March 9th, 2015:

Think its fair to overpay considering this team hasn’t had a QB start a 16 game season since 2009.

F Mac. If he had the loyalty like Cobb he would be stayed. That being said I think he’s replaceable. Nothing special. Provided we will have some draft picks to get a replacement..

  17. 17 Dan said at 7:17 AM on March 9th, 2015:

He went to the coach who drafted him, seems like loyalty to me. And stop crying, if a job came up that paid you 10 to 20% closer to where you live with a boss you liked you would make the jump as well. Its a business and a job for him, for you its entertainment that you spend a few hours on the weekend watching. He owes you no loyalty. He is a good player, its a shame he is gone, but be a grown up about it.

  18. 18 RobNE said at 9:30 PM on March 8th, 2015:

We hear about FA “signings” before the market really opens on Tuesday, so when would we hear about MM if there was a deal in place? Not a draft day deal, obv.

I mean, why can’t we hear about that now if it’s in place, if we can hear Maclin is going to KC etc.

  19. 19 CampDracula said at 10:29 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Because if a deal exists, it would be contingent upon MM being there (e.g. trade with Jets at 6 if MM is there). And if The Eagles broadcasted their intentions, another team could swoop in ahead of them.

If a trade happens, it will be on draft day.

This is a scary sight if Gore/Sproles or Matthews have to sit out games.
They have to be considering injuries across this front; and they cant draft quality replacements for these positions if they dont have draft picks if they move up for MM…

  23. 23 oreofestar said at 9:33 PM on March 8th, 2015:

  25. 25 Patrick said at 9:50 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Its an elaborate ruse from Chip, he just really want to obtain his goal of all his outside WR really being TEs, then having Matthews and Huff work the slot and Celek lining up as the real TE.

  26. 26 daveH said at 10:31 PM on March 8th, 2015:

maybe we go Hundly QB and even find REGGIE WAYNE ??

  27. 27 Dominik said at 9:33 PM on March 8th, 2015:

I think Chip will find a WR. Could be a veteran, with Matthews and Huff as young players already in place.

It all depends on Mariota or not. If we have draft picks, Chip can draft one or even two WR, let them learn for a year with the veteran in place. No biggie, imho. Chip will get his offense moving, especially if the O-Line and QB is healthy.

  36. 36 A_T_G said at 9:39 PM on March 8th, 2015:

It seems like an odd choice by Maclin, though. He has direct history with both coaches, and had his best year with Chip, yet he is returning to Andy?

So you are happy we didn’t over pay for Maclin, a player we know can be productive on this offense, but at the same time are happy we DID overpay for Maxwell, a good CB that we payed as a great CB, who we just are assuming will come right in and be a quality player? This is exactly what we talk about avoiding every offseason.

I’d love to have seen what the conversation about this would have been had the Cowboys/Redskins/Giants done the same thing.

Chip has more faith in himself then he does Billy Davis

  50. 50 Jarock said at 10:13 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Smidge over 10mil a season for Maxwell is a lot, but not Revis/Sherman/Peterson money. 15mil plus a season would be drastically overpaying. Maxwell is an above average corner who’s till improving and held up well despite being the primary target in Seattle. He undeniably benefitted from the exceptional safety play there and barring McCourty signing with us will have to adjust. I expect he’ll be fine. I’d have paid Maclin 10mil a year and been happy but anything more than that would have been way overpaying. Maclin’s a solid 2, but he’s not a game changer. Sucks to lose him, but the Eagles will survive.

  51. 51 P_P_K said at 10:19 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Your point is reasonable. For a coach only in the NFL for two years, he’s certainly not afraid to make big moves. Some guys genuflect before everything Chip does but that’s probably because we so badly want to believe the guy will bring success to the Eagles. At this point, I’m reserving judgement on Chip, while hoping he really is the smartest guy in the room.

  52. 52 All Things Bad@ss said at 1:57 AM on March 9th, 2015:

I think much of the adulation for the Maxwell agreement was pre-Maclin-to-KC news. If they had agreed w/ Mac as well, a good portion of fanbase would’ve been satisfied. If they agreed w/ Mac AND McCourty on top of Maxwell and Gore, many would’ve jumped for joy, while a portion would’ve been lamenting it as DT pt2. There’s never pleasing everyone … only sterling silver Lombardi can do that.

  65. 65 Jack Burden said at 9:48 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Losing Maclin just makes it even less likely that Chip would trade all his picks in the draft (and next year’s and the year after) for Mariota. Instead they will make a few free agent signings and look to build depth at al their other positions of need through the draft. Shocking, I know.

Buffalo: Jordan Gay, P, Centre; Fred Jackson, RB, Coe.
Indianapolis: Jerrell Freeman, LB, Mary Hardin-Baylor; Andy Studebaker, LB, Wheaton
Jacksonville: Cecil Shorts III, WR, Mount Union
Miami: Jason Trusnik, LB, Ohio Northern
San Francisco: Derek Carrier, TE, Beloit
Seattle: Steven Hauschka, K, Middlebury (by way of N.C. State)
Washington: Pierre Garcon, WR, Mount Union

Hakeem Nicks will get 1000 yards in the injury pool and 7 surgeries, hopefully we dont go anywhere near him.

I do agree with the point though, Chip will probably make it work with solid NFL starters. It just sucks when we had DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin the last couple of years. Chip pays huge attention to the OL, he likes to utilize TE and he spreads the ball around. We were always gonna move towards 4 good WRs, instead of 1 or 2 great ones.

Well for one safety play, hence the McCourty courting. Still leaves a hole at OLB i.e. T. Cole. So their hope is that they can land McCourty and Worilds most likely. If they cannot get McCourty we will likely see Parker or Searcy and then they may look to Culliver/Moore if they cant get McC.

    My wishlist:
    Clint Boling
    McCourty
    Worilds/Sheard

  165. 165 shah8 said at 10:34 PM on March 8th, 2015:

You know, I’m not really looking forward to more of either Foles or Sanchez. I am not a huge fan of Mariota, to the extent of the sort of trade we’d have to offer.

I am not a fan of Maclin leaving, and I have to wonder if the locker room was a big impact on his decisionmaking.

I generally consider Maxwell the product of the system. At least in 2013, quite a bit of his work dealt with the consequences of a shutdown corner on the other side, with excellent backup behind him. My view is that the Eagles have conceded that speed is a necessary component of CB success, and they absolutely couldn’t sacrifice requisite speed in favor of size and cleanup tackling.

Frank Gore is too old to be a bellcow back. Not sure why we need two such long in the tooth backs. The usual tendency of guys as old as Gore is that there is a dramatic drop in effectiveness due to unfamiliar system, and not being able to drag out more physical performance to compensate. That’s a lot of money for such a back, and getting him makes me think that we have to draft a RB in the second or third.

Ehhh…I’m really thinking this is a setup to be a down year. If that’s the case, here’s to not selling out huge for Mariota.

  166. 166 OregonDucker said at 10:38 PM on March 8th, 2015:

  168. 168 shah8 said at 10:57 PM on March 8th, 2015:

I don’t think anyone can be perfectly happy with any team, unless, I guess they have won a SB and can win more, and even still, most teams in the true FA has some sort of hole.

I’m not happy with the Eagles because I think there is too good a chance they’re on the wrong path.

why do you feel that way?

  170. 170 shah8 said at 11:01 PM on March 8th, 2015:

I have had strong suspicions for a while that Chip Kelly is one of those coaches who busts because he believes his system can compensate for lack of talent. Talent on O is…kind of low. It’s rather evenly spread out, so this could be a team that beats poorly coached, disorganized defenses, but in no way can we score truely at will.

  171. 171 anon said at 11:04 PM on March 8th, 2015:

i think he’s doing what he needs to do. we get tons of yds between the 20ss no rz. so he got a power back. i think he’s going to get a better guard. and we’ll get a big body wr all to help imrpove the redzone. Especially if we do get MM we’ll have no issue moving the ball.

Really? I don’t remember commenting much on 2011, but I did sort of approve of the Fireman, and the Dream Team stuff. I can’t remember 2012 moves, except that we had an excellent draft. There hasn’t been much in the way of sexiness about Eagles offseasons in 2013 and 2014, I guess. And I’m…not happy about 2015.

And seriously, were 2013 and 2014 particularly successful offseasons, other than not being crazy in drafts 2013, and having a rather bad offseason in 2014?

And we’ve been waiting months for these moves

  230. 230 Donald Kalinowski said at 10:45 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Honestly I was never really satisfied with Maclin as our #1.

  231. 231 oreofestar said at 10:46 PM on March 8th, 2015:

No one left to replace him though unless they want to move Cameron back at wr

  232. 232 xeynon said at 11:54 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Then you’re going to be even less satisfied with our #1 next year, because whoever replaces him isn’t going to be as good as he is.

  233. 233 OregonDucker said at 10:45 PM on March 8th, 2015:

    Time for seppuku.

  234. 234 mksp said at 10:47 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Or we filled a huge hole in our secondary, didn’t overpay a #2 WR, solidified our back up QB situation and signed the perfect stopgap RB for our scheme at a quarter of the Shady’s cap hit.

It’s all spin, man. Time is a flat circle.

  235. 235 oreofestar said at 10:55 PM on March 8th, 2015:

I don’t hate all the move but my pessimistic spin was glorious

  236. 236 Greg Richards said at 10:47 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Really don’t think we overpaid for Maxwell. Payed market price. You’re not going to get your #1 target at every position. As far as Maclin goes, while I’m not totally convinced KC is going to get him, if you don’t think it’s wise to pay a WR what he’s asking then you shouldn’t pay that to them just because you missed out on another position. Sometimes that factors in and you might be willing to increase your offer slightly but if you think a top WR in your offense should only get $6 or $7M a year you’re not all of a sudden going to offer them $10M a year. Releasing all those guys wasn’t just about this year anyway.

  237. 237 Ark87 said at 10:48 PM on March 8th, 2015:

It’s still a very hot take so I reserve the right to change my opinion, but our offense was good not great. Can’t just switch out McCoy for Gore and Maclin for a #2 type WR and not expect to see a drop-off. Of course we’ll see who we bring in to be our #1 receiver first.

Also Maclin had such a strong rapport with Foles in clutch moments. Put this into the growing bin of evidence suggesting Foles is gone.

  238. 238 wee2424 said at 10:57 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Your right. We shouldn’t have gotten Maxwell? And we should have over paid Maclin? See what I did there?

  239. 239 oreofestar said at 10:59 PM on March 8th, 2015:

I’m being super pessimistic I’m Fina with Maxwell move, Sanchez and Gore moves are meh but I get them it’s the sting of the other 2 I’m feeling

  240. 240 wee2424 said at 11:05 PM on March 8th, 2015:

I didn’t think we would get both but I was hopefully. There are still some good FA safeties. Maclin does hurt, and I am pissed about it. I see three options out of this. Torry Smith, Andre Johnson somehow, or make a play on a receiver high in the draft.

  241. 241 Jarock said at 11:08 PM on March 8th, 2015:

As anon told me, Torry is signing with SF.

Andre would look good in green.

  242. 242 laeagle said at 12:09 AM on March 9th, 2015:

Sucks but you can never get really pissed off too much when a guy signs with his current team for less. Not much you can do there. Even less when said team just won the Super Bowl.

With that said, why was Maclin the only jackass who didn’t do that today?

  243. 243 ICDogg said at 10:47 PM on March 8th, 2015:

  246. 246 ICDogg said at 10:51 PM on March 8th, 2015:

    fair enough

  247. 247 Jarock said at 10:50 PM on March 8th, 2015:

    Wow. Glass half empty???

Alonso is an upgrade over Ryans let alone the garbage we trotted out most of the 2nd half of the season.

Maxwell is an upgrade over either Cary or Brad.

Gore is a slight step down from Shady, but I’m not convinced the dropoff will be as severe as some fear.

Losing Mac hurts but he’s not irreplaceable.

Still not done making moves. Wait til the dust settles before assuming the worst.

  258. 258 suthrneagle said at 11:13 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Chip saw that Shady Dancer was not getting it done, which is why McCoy was on the sidelines more often than not when one or two yards were needed to score, and why he is being paid by Buffalo, and Gore will be cashing Lurie`s paychecks.

  259. 259 wee2424 said at 10:56 PM on March 8th, 2015:

  261. 261 Greg Richards said at 10:49 PM on March 8th, 2015:

I like him. I’m still pretty early into the backs, I’ve only watched most of them casually as up until a week ago I didn’t think we would do more than take a day 3 flyer on somebody. Overall though Cobb doesn’t look like a 230lbs back which is a good thing. He has some lateral wiggle. TBD about vision or his transition to a zone scheme.

The perfect fit for this offense is Ameer but I don’t think that’s going to happen unless teams get really freaked out by his heavy college workload.

Yeah I know. Also, shouldn’t judge a player on a single bad play. Everyone has them, just really bad when that’s the only play anyone really remembers about the player in question. Combine with the Eagles struggles with giving up deep passes the last two seasons and it’s not a pleasant thought.

  358. 358 wee2424 said at 11:29 PM on March 8th, 2015:

I liked the Shady move ALOT. I think Gore will be good for us and an upgrade in RZ but overall a slight downgrade at talent. I get the Toddfather was old, injury prone and expensive, but I think Tobin is a downgrade talent wise. I started last week really excited but now I’m just confused. This off season is very contradicting. I’m happy about the Maxwell signing, and we needed it, but we did overpay which filled a need. So we don’t sign Maclin, a homegrown talent, because we don’t want to overspend. So now we have another huge need. Chip values the Oline so he lets Herremans go, says he is high on Tobin who was an obvious downgrade. It just seems as though there may have been a plan but it is starting to unravel. I thought you keep Maclin and go high pick in draft at Oline since its a weak Oline draft. Now it appears you may have to go WR earlier then thought. I get the plug and play concept, but I think it only works if you have someone like Brady.

It just seems as though there may have been a plan but it is starting to unravel. … the thing is is it`s not your plan,so how could you think that it`s unraveling? It`s Kelly`s plan, and all we can do is watch as it plays out. Relax, it`s gonna be a long 6 months till Game 1 kicks off.

  360. 360 wee2424 said at 12:18 AM on March 9th, 2015:

Lol it’s because we have opinions and that’s why there is a comment section. I’m not freaking out, I’m just disappointed because of the contradictions and the message it can send to our homegrown talent. The whole fun part of the off season is guessing the plan and hopeing it works out how you think it will. None of us truly know their plan, but we make educated guesses on what it can be. Maybe I was right and it didn’t go how Chip thought it would. Maybe I’m wrong. Because you know as little as I do who are you to tell me that what I thought their plan was is not correct. Same goes if I were telling you your guess is wrong. However, isn’t it entirely plausible that what they wanted to do didn’t go right? Off seasons never work out exactly how teams want them to. They reportedly made McCourty the highest priority, and wanted to retain Maclin. They weren’t able to. So doesn’t that suggest right there what they wanted to do didn’t go right?

  361. 361 unhinged said at 5:11 PM on March 9th, 2015:

I was concerned about the message that overpaying for Maclin would send. I am not happy about BG wearing blue, and I was hoping that Maclin would return, but I’m really more concerned about who will be our starting OLB predator next season.

  362. 362 xeynon said at 11:33 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Ugh is right. 2 yrs/9 mm with 5.5 guaranteed is grossly overpaying for Mark Sanchez. Yet Kelly’s willing to let Maclin walk over a couple million extra dollars? A receiving corps of Huff, Matthews, and Cooper isn’t gonna scare anyone. It’s quite possibly the worst starting group in the NFL. I’m sure he’ll bring in another veteran, but there is no other player available who is remotely in Maclin’s class as a receiver in this FA class. This offense is going to take a step back next season. Book it.

Signing Maxwell doesn’t even make up for it. He’s a good cornerback and an upgrade on Cary Williams but he’s not one of the five best CBs in football, which is what he’s being paid like.

I have no idea why Chip is willing to overpay for other teams’ players while nickel-and-diming his own into leaving town, but I don’t like it a bit.

  363. 363 NinjaP said at 11:36 PM on March 8th, 2015:

  366. 366 xeynon said at 11:40 PM on March 8th, 2015:

As mentioned above, he made about half as much last year. And calling him a “top backup” is a stretch. He’s an okay backup, but nothing more.

  367. 367 Insomniac said at 11:40 PM on March 8th, 2015:

The draft isn’t even here and everyone is going “Desean’s gone” over Maclin? Lol

  368. 368 xeynon said at 12:27 AM on March 9th, 2015:

We already had a number of positions that were in crying need of an infusion of young talent before the moves of the last week. Now we can add RB and WR to that list. You only have so many high draft picks, and we’ll have few or none if we actually get Mariota.

Teams get better by filling in existing holes, not creating new ones. It’s possible the Chiefs grossly overpaid for Maclin and the Eagles made a sound financial decision by letting him walk – but there is no arguing that it doesn’t make them worse on the field to do so. The likelihood of another free agent receiver being as good as Maclin is very small, and the likelihood of a draft pick replacing him adequately is near zero (and picking a WR would mean not picking a guy at another position).

  369. 369 RC5000 said at 1:01 AM on March 9th, 2015:

Maclin isn’t irreplaceable in the long run.Too many Eagles fans just don’t have faith in Kelly’s offensive mind and methods.

I’m not saying he’s a championship coach yet but they have drafted Ertz and Matthews and Huff may be good also, he did flash a tiny bit and he needs to relax.

  370. 370 wee2424 said at 11:42 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Yeah I don’t get this. Willing to overspend on outside talent but not on our own.

  371. 371 Jarock said at 11:42 PM on March 8th, 2015:

Absolutely agree we’re overpaying Sanchez. Still, not a lot of good choices when you’re looking for backups unless you’re convinced Barkley finally makes good which Chip clearly isn’t.

Maxwell is a solid upgrade over Cary and he’s making just over 10mil a season. That’s good but not elite money. It’s the guaranteed money that’s over the top frankly.

Other’s pointed out that Chip doesn’t seem to value the WR position and based on his history at Oregon, that certainly seems to be the case. I think he’d have liked to have Maclin back but only at what he considered reasonable. I really hope we’re not depending on Huff to start or even be the #3, but I wouldn’t be shocked if that’s what happens.

Overall, I’d say our D took two solid steps forward with the acquisitions of Maxwell and Alonso while our O took a step back with the losses of Herremans, Maclin, and Shady and signing of Gore. I’m doing the glass half full thing at this point, but only the regular season will tell the tale.

  374. 374 Greg Richards said at 11:49 PM on March 8th, 2015:

  375. 375 Jarock said at 11:58 PM on March 8th, 2015:

  381. 381 wee2424 said at 12:04 AM on March 9th, 2015:

I am more high on Huff then you are, but that’s if he is in the slot. Which would mean Mathews would move to outside in which I don’t think Kelly will do. I’m pissed about Maclin, you over spend on one need, but refuse to on another which is a homegrown talent, which in turn creates another glaring need. I get the devalue of WR, and the plug and play at that position. It makes sense, as long as you have a Tom Brady. You can scheme all you want in this league but you also need talent. I was behind the Shady move. I’m not behind this Maclin thing. If he truly wants MM he needs talent around him.

  382. 382 Jarock said at 12:08 AM on March 9th, 2015:

I realize Huff’s talented, but his mistakes last season outweighed his production. If he wasn’t an Oregon alum, I’m convinced he’d have been nailed to the bench after his second bone-headed turnover. MSIII is clearly talented and couldn’t sniff the field for most of the season. If Chip trades most of the next two drafts away to get MM, he’s going to need to spend money on quality FA, even at positions like WR.

  383. 383 wee2424 said at 12:35 AM on March 9th, 2015:

I don’t want to go after MM, and I believe if we were to do so signing Maclin would have been a bigger priority. Yes Huffs mistakes outweighed the production, and I think that’s why he saw the field less, and due to his early season injury. However he seems to be a hard worker and I’m sure he is working on his hands and ball carrying while studying the playbook. You can see the kid has serious toughness and YAC potential. He is a violent runner for a WR. If he puts in the work i think he could be a very dangerous KR/PR and slot receiver in this league.

  384. 384 RC5000 said at 1:15 AM on March 9th, 2015:

How do you know they won’t sign a WR? Mariota needs maclin and Foles doesn’t? seems like a big stretch…i guess your point is they would be more comfortable trading picks but they could have plans you don’t know about.

  385. 385 wee2424 said at 11:48 AM on March 9th, 2015:

Obviously they have plans none of us know about. I was just discussing a scenario. They probably are going to sign a WR, which will be a downgrade over Maclin. Any receiver we sign now will not in anyway be considered a number 1. Wouldn’t be a problem if you had another solid outside receiver, but we don’t. We have the worst rated outside receiver in the league in Cooper. Right now it’s possible we might have the worst WR group in the NFL. It will change, but it just won’t be as good as if Maclin were here.

  386. 386 RC5000 said at 1:43 AM on March 9th, 2015:

You make good points but Mariota just turned 21 in fall, there is time to build around him.

  387. 387 unhinged said at 4:30 PM on March 9th, 2015:

As long as the negotiation went, both sides expressing optimism, I have to believe that Maclin made decision solely on $$. That is his right, and more power to him, but I do believe that Kelly wanted him, just not for a ransom. I know that it is subjective, but Kelly seems cognizant of position limits on cap, and if he thinks Maclin was demanding more than Kelly deemed fair, I agree with his decision. Conversely, Eagles appear to have very little revenue tied up in the secondary, and getting a corner worth what Maxwell is going to get is not nearly as simple, in my opinion, as replacing Maclin’s productivity.

Wayne absolutely lost a step but runs good routes and I’ve never heard anything negative about him.
