Sanchez In, Maclin Out

The Eagles' wild ride will continue: Jeremy Maclin plans to reunite with Andy Reid in Kansas City once free agent market opens Tuesday.

Mark Sanchez back to the Eagles on a 2-year deal worth $9m with $5.5m guaranteed, per source.

Losing Maclin hurts. I’m glad the Eagles had the discipline not to just hand him a blank check, but I do hate to see him go. Mac hasn’t always been my favorite player, but he just had a career year and playing for Chip Kelly seemed to bring out the best in him.
There aren’t any star receivers to sign to replace him, but there are going to be some interesting options. We’ll get into that later.
Sanchez is a Chip Kelly favorite. And the team needed a backup QB. I’ll write a longer post on exactly what the move means.

No updates on any other CBs. There is this on McCourty.

_
Crazy day.
I have no clue what’s going on
You’re not supposed to oreofestar. None of us know. This is Chip.
First thing chip did when he came was grab that TE….not all of his moves are rosy ……
No playoff wins since January 2009. Let the man work his plan.
What has Chip Kelly done to earn blind faith in his plan, pray tell?
How about, he`s done pretty well with other people“s players. Now he`s putting together his own team. Let`s watch him put one together, work on it through the summer and show us what he`s done beginning Sept..
I will give him the season before making any definitive judgments.
But a strategy of bringing in guys who are old (Gore), are leaving an elite surrounding cast and being projected into a new system (Maxwell) or both has been tried before, and it fails more often than not. It failed in Philly as recently as 2011. It is doubly questionable when coupled with gutting the team of all its best current players as is happening now, and/or trading a huge amount of resources to acquire one player in the draft as it is rumored may happen with Mariota. It’s too early to declare this offseason a disaster, yes. But questioning/criticism is totally within reason given that Chip is pursuing a number of strategies that have really bad track records.
You’re not allowed to question chip even though he hasnt won anything in college or the pros and will probably make us the bengals of the 90’s.
Gee, you’re not biased at all.
Nope, just a Visionary.
fwiw:
Good no Mac so might as well raise McCourty offer a bit
So we’ll grossly overpay our backup QB, but not our, with a wide margin, best wide receiver. It’ll be interesting to see what Mac got. Anything less than 11, I would have matche it.
Think its fair to overpay considering this team hasn’t had a QB start a 16 game season since 2009.
F Mac. If he had the loyalty like Cobb he would be stayed. That being said I think he’s replaceable. Nothing special. Provided we will have some draft picks to get a replacement..
He went to the coach who drafted him, seems like loyalty to me. And stop crying, if a job came up that paid you 10 to 20% closer to where you live with a boss you liked you would make the jump as well. Its a business and a job for him, for you its entertainment that you spend a few hours on the weekend watching. He owes you no loyalty. He is a good player, its a shame he is gone, but be a grown up about it.
We hear about FA “signings” before the market really opens on Tuesday, so when would we hear about MM if there was a deal in place? Not a draft day deal, obv.
I mean, why can’t we hear about that now if it’s in place, if we can hear Maclin is going to KC etc.
Because if a deal exists, it would be contingent upon MM being there (e.g. trade with Jets at 6 if MM is there). And if The Eagles broadcasted their intentions, another team could swoop in ahead of them.
If a trade happens, it will be on draft day.
Second straight year a WR coming off a career year in Kelly’s offense being let go. Maybe it’s him?
One was free will other one, not so much
Starting WR’s Cooper, Matthews, Huff
RB’s Gore, Sproles, Polk.
This is a scary sight if Gore/Sproles or Matthews have to sit out games.
They have to be considering injuries across this front; and they cant draft quality replacements for these positions if they dont have draft picks if they move up for MM…
Yeah Chip.isn’t dumb there has to be something in place
Don’t forget about the TE’s. Kempski mentioned Jordan Cameron as a possible target.
Its an elaborate ruse from Chip, he just really want to obtain his goal of all his outside WR really being TEs, then having Matthews and Huff work the slot and Celek lining up as the real TE.
maybe we go Hundly QB and even find REGGIE WAYNE ??
I think Chip will find a WR. Could be a veteran, with Matthews and Huff as young players already in place.
It all depends on Mariota or not. If we have draft picks, Chip can draft one or even two WR, let them learn for a year with the veteran in place. No biggie, imho. Chip will get his offense moving, especially if the O-Line and QB is healthy.
nevermind / fake account!
I wonder if he would have stayed if we could have somehow traded Cooper
That is not Macs twitter, he did not tweet this. https://twitter.com/jmac_18
People really need to stop falling for those fake accounts
I know, it got retweeted by a real account, that’s why I fell for it.
If you’re a real news account you really, really, really shouldn’t fall for it.
Sorry my man, its easy to see why people get misled, when the reporters can’t fucking do their job right.
Yeah, exactly.
This was this mea culpa:
https://twitter.com/WillBrinson/status/574745345311244288
And, I like to repeat: I want NUMBERS on Maclin. If he signs for 9.5m in KC, I don’t know what is going on. If he signs for 11, Chip made exactly the right call.
Yeah. Can’t blame him for taking the big money. I did love Mac and was rooting for him last year. Seems like a really good guy.
I trust Chip here. Matthews, Huff, Cooper, and rookie may very well put up better overall numbers next season.
It seems like an odd choice by Maclin, though. He has direct history with both coaches, and had his best year with Chip, yet he is returning to Andy?
Then again, DeSean and now Mac might just prove how much Andy will overpay for WRs.
Its gotta be money
Money with a family incentive I guess.
Feeling super salty about Riley Pooper outlasting Jackson and Maclin though.
Especially when Foles is not starting he is pure shit.
Not sure where his head is, but I wonder if Chip would be interested in a physical freak like Kenny Britt?
Aren’t all of Britt’s troubles centered around his circle of friends, located just across the Deleware river?
any of them play olb?
sign britt, cox, culliver and hardy. F culture!
Pass
Get me Evans and I’ll forget Mac lol
2 Evan Mathis’ would be amazing.
So you are happy we didn’t over pay for Maclin, a player we know can be productive on this offense, but at the same time are happy we DID overpay for Maxwell, a good CB that we payed as a great CB, who we just are assuming will come right in and be a quality player? This is exactly what we talk about avoiding every offseason.
I’d love to have seen what the conversation about this would have been had the Cowboys/Redskins/Giants done the same thing.
Chip has more faith in himself then he does Billy Davis
Smidge over 10mil a season for Maxwell is a lot, but not Revis/Sherman/Peterson money. 15mil plus a season would be drastically overpaying. Maxwell is an above average corner who’s till improving and held up well despite being the primary target in Seattle. He undeniably benefitted from the exceptional safety play there and barring McCourty signing with us will have to adjust. I expect he’ll be fine. I’d have paid Maclin 10mil a year and been happy but anything more than that would have been way overpaying. Maclin’s a solid 2, but he’s not a game changer. Sucks to lose him, but the Eagles will survive.
Your point is reasonable. For a coach only in the NFL for two years, he’s certainly not afraid to make big moves. Some guys genuflect before everything Chip does but that’s probably because we so badly want to believe the guy will bring success to the Eagles. At this point, I’m reserving judgement on Chip, while hoping he really is the smartest guy in the room.
I think much of the adulation for the Maxwell agreement was pre-Maclin-to-KC news. If they had agreed w/ Mac as well, a good portion of fanbase would’ve been satisfied. If they agreed w/ Mac AND McCourty on top of Maxwell and Gore, many would’ve jumped for joy, while a portion would’ve been lamenting it as DT pt2. There’s never pleasing everyone … only sterling silver Lombardi can do that.
What’s your guys wr list for the draft? Starting available from the 2nd round? If you know we have a pic that high. Or should i just ask about after 5 round?
I’m going to try to put my positional rankings for WR and RB together with blurbs on all the guys in the next few days.
Oh sweet. Gratzi
Does the Sanches n Gore signings include AARP cards?
Didnt know you can get an aarp card being under 30 years old.
Old horse…can’t get one under 40 either….
I just wrote something similar above. I guess I’m just the second wittiest guy on this board.
D3FB:
Saw your tweet advocating for Kenny Bell.
I like everything about him, except he seems to fight the ball a lot. Tons of double catches. Not on Sammie Coates’ level, but cause for concern to me.
You think he can get better here?
I mean he’s never going to have amazing hands but he’s very similar to Jordan Matthews in that if he doesn’t make it in the league, it won’t be because a lack of effort.
I’m gonna laugh if Coates becomes an Eagle because of all the hate you put on him.
With what second round pick?
With all that Chip has done so far, do you really think, if he didn’t like Sammie, he wouldn’t get him somehow? lol
Losing Maclin just makes it even less likely that Chip would trade all his picks in the draft (and next year’s and the year after) for Mariota. Instead they will make a few free agent signings and look to build depth at al their other positions of need through the draft. Shocking, I know.
OD….can’t go into the season with Sanches/MM/Barkley….can they?
Why not?
2-14 season….if they get lucky…
I’ll take that bet. U crazy.
Lol…a rookie qb won’t win…and Sanches can’t stop throwing ints …. Ok…no better than 4 wins?
Agreed. Mike McMahon sucks.
Actually, that sounds ideal for bringing along an anointed rookie.
It does…but you don’t sign gore knowing you not winning for a few years….might as well as draft a rookie rb n play him….
Why not win this year? How long did it take Wilson or Kap to start winning? Luck? RGIII?
Besides, Gore can be his grizzled sergeant in the huddle – the guy that knows what it takes to be the commander but isn’t out for the glory for himself.
Gore doesn’t know chips system yet…he might not make it past 1st ota…too many new faces…new qb..rb…wr…I don’t know the number but when was the last time a team lost/changed 3 impact players n won?
With his guaranteed $ Gore is making the team this year.
He’s new to the Birds system…making it threw ota meant he’ll pass out…lol
He’s a running back. It’s inside zone and outside zone. Not earth shattering stuff.
True…
there’s a great stat from espn about gore’s efficiency running from shotgun, still averaging 5.0ypc, also great rz efficency.
Gore and Sproles compliment each other well. It should be an exciting backfield.
And they are both eligible for AARP discounts.
Lmao…true…don’t get me wrong…I love gore…I think he’s a baller….it’s just a young mans game…
Chip will evaluate during training camp. If MM can pick up NFL disguised blitzes and coverages, then he will start. If not Sanchez will.
Do not underestimate MM’s ability to quickly learn. He is a film junkie who listens to what his mentors are trying to teach him. He is not normal.
Wait, are we just casually gonna assume that Marcus Mariota will end up an Eagle?
No.
Are u having doubts?
From what I hear tonight, there is not ink on paper. I still think it will get done. But the NFL is crazy on contracts. Nothing is certain yet.
It’s a…for instance….
what if we DO get mariotta and he HOLDS OUT FOR MEGA MOOLA.. duh of course he would !!! and we get oursevlves painfully sliced coming and going
You are aware he can’t do that correct?
(was pretty sure and wondering that as I was typing ..but I kept going
..
thanks for being nice to me)
No matter what…I don’t want Sanches playing…I’d rather a rookie take lumps
So are we definitely going all in for MM or am I going to wake up in May and realize that all Chip has done is get rid of every talented player on the roster he inherited and stick with Foles at QB?
The answer to that might not even be in Chip’s hands. No way it’s going to be easy to move up in the draft and get his boy.
Rookie QBs do not win in the NFL. Period. Even the smartest and most successful ones usually take a season or two before they have any notable success. Andrew Luck didn’t win in the playoffs in his rookie season, and only got there because the division he was playing in sucks. I like Mariota as a prospect but he is not in Andrew Luck’s class. If Kelly thinks he can make a Super Bowl run next season with a stripped down offense headlined by Marcus Mariota, he is delusional.
The biggest question until Thursday April 30th is whether Chip is going after Mariota.
Chip Kelly just traded Hamels
Hopefully he got a guard that can hit to the opposite field.
Sam Hinkie signs Maclin off waivers
Can Hinkie transfer some of those second rounders?
he traded mike schmidt, dr J and pelle lindburgh
Can he trade Arod?
arod is perfect for the Yankees.
im pissed
Hard to get pissed until I see the terms
Pissed angry or pissed drunk?
Don’t drink so it’s got to be the other one
Im pissed. Drunk. English n
Meeee toooo. A lot to clean up tomorrow.
On or off?
must admit, i hear his voice on espn, my world stops. when they played, liked mcnabb more, but 20’s flown past in retirement.
hali restructured tp 6.5m. can’t believe they kept him w dee ford and houston, oh well.
dang. any word on mcphee? he could be nice hybris nickel/dend
no no no no no
cole + BG —> mcphee = 🙁
forgot about celcil shorts, also a great choice, won’t be nicks.
ALL HAIL Division 3 FOOTBALL!
You might already be tuned into this, but here’s the D3 players in the NFL last year.
Buffalo: Jordan Gay, P, Centre; Fred Jackson, RB, Coe.
Indianapolis: Jerrell Freeman, LB, Mary Hardin-Baylor; Andy Studebaker, LB, Wheaton
Jacksonville: Cecil Shorts III, WR, Mount Union
Miami: Jason Trusnik, LB, Ohio Northern
San Francisco: Derek Carrier, TE, Beloit
Seattle: Steven Hauschka, K, Middlebury (by way of N.C. State)
Washington: Pierre Garcon, WR, Mount Union
Nice, Trusnik is the only one I’m not familiar with.
Marpet will almost assuredly make it and I like the WR from Whitewater’s chances as well.
Hakeem Nicks will get 1000 yards in the injury pool and 7 surgeries, hopefully we dont go anywhere near him.
I do agree with the point though, Chip will probably make it work with solid NFL starters. It just sucks when we had DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin the last couple of years. Chip pays huge attention to the OL, he likes to utilize TE and he spreads the ball around. We were always gonna move towards 4 good WRs, instead of 1 or 2 great ones.
Who the heck is bryn Swartz?
writes Eagles stuff for B/R, Fox’s blog, the Examiner, and other crappy places
Since we did indeed sign Maxwell, we can safely assume that Chip is going to value defense more heavily in FA. We now have 2 upgrades on Defense: Alonso and Maxwell. What else is he thinking?
Well for one safety play, hence the McCourty courting. Still leaves a hole at OLB i.e. T. Cole. So their hope is that they can land McCourty and Worilds most likely. If they cannot get McCourty we will likely see Parker or Searcy and then they may look to Culliver/Moore if they cant get McC.
My wishlist:
Clint Boling
McCourty
Worilds/Sheard
i think we ed up with t. cole or bg
Surprised I haven’t seen Torrey Smith’s name bandied about here as a Maclin replacement. He’s stylistically similar and confirmed leaving the Ravens. Imagine he’d be cheaper as he’s coming off a down year.
done deal with SF
ah
Maybe it’s just me but I’m no where near as upset about losing Maclin as I was about DJax last year.
Agreed. Losing DeSean still hurts.
it’s comforting… knowing
Other way around for me. DeSean is way too inconsistent and limited for my liking. Still very good, but I understood letting him go. Maclin is an ideal, all-around receiver.
Yeah… But Desean makes 6/year. That’s a bargain for me liking.
Not what he was going to make with us and he’d have refused a pay cut if the Eagles asked. 6 a year is actually fair for a one-dimensional (pretty !#$ good dimension) receiver.
Can’t believe I’m praising the redskins even if it’s a backhanded compliment.
At least we’ll get a nice comp pick for him.
Let’s sign McCourty and McPhee and build some defense. In the end, Defense wins championships. F Maclin.
If anybody quotes Vince Youngs first interview in Philly, i’ll send you an angry look! TRHOUGH THE INTERNET!!!!
Is it true Howie sabotaged Macs contract so he wouldn’t sign here? ……….(joking of course)
With Maclin gone should the eagles be interested in Andre Homles? 6’4 decent year with Oakland which is kind of hard to do…
that’s what ive been saying the whole time
I think they should.. they didn’t tender him he would be like, 2-3mil at the most! 26 years old 6’4. fits the eagles description (if he can block)
https://twitter.com/BrianDawkins/status/574752894697631744
Sorry ICDogg, I did not page down.
Anybody seen GEAGLE yet? Starting to worry.
I think he said he was traveling. When he lands, then it’s duck & cover.
Its gonna be bad. and awesome. and baaaaaad!
OD, do you have a Twitter account? What’s your handle?
Search the bars. He’s probably drinking himself into oblivion. We’ll need to search the graveyard if Kelly trades Foles for MM.
He’s fine, he’s probably pissed and doesn’t want to deal with all you guys ripping him
Who cares, honestly?
He’ll be fine. And seriously, who cares. Way easier to navigate the comments without wading through a dozen paragraphs of spam.
It’s not spam. It’s the wisdom of Chippah!
http://i.imgur.com/tivvuRU.jpg
lol
Good thing we don’t overpay wide receivers.
Off topic: does anyone else find it hypocritical that this dude is still on the team in light of Chip’s talk of “culture?”
There is absolutely nothing funny in Riley Cooper being the Eagles best wide receiver and getting paid 5 million next year.
#blocking>culture
Deleted
I do but it’s a private account. I’m still a dinosaur in the modern age.
I’m happy they got Maxwell, but it seems like they got ripped off a little bit. It’s hard to understand why they would overpay for Maxwell but not be willing to meet Maclin’s asking price.
The value decision tree says WR is less important to Chip.
You know, I’m not really looking forward to more of either Foles or Sanchez. I am not a huge fan of Mariota, to the extent of the sort of trade we’d have to offer.
I am not a fan of Maclin leaving, and I have to wonder if the locker room was a big impact on his decisionmaking.
I generally consider Maxwell the product of the system. At least in 2013, quite a bit of his work dealt with the consequences of a shutdown corner on the other side, with excellent backup behind him. My view is that the Eagles have conceded that speed is a necessary component of CB success, and they absolutely couldn’t sacrifice requisite speed in favor of size and cleanup tackling.
Frank Gore is too old to be a bellcow back. Not sure why we need two such long in the tooth backs. The usual tendency of guys as old as Gore is that there is a dramatic drop in effectiveness due to unfamiliar system, and not being able to drag out more physical performance to compensate. That’s a lot of money for such a back, and getting him makes me think that we have to draft a RB in the second or third.
Ehhh…I’m really thinking this is a setup to be a down year. If that’s the case, here’s to not selling out huge for Mariota.
Love your posts shah8. Let’s see how FA and the draft plays out. Then we can assess.
I mean, you’ll never truly be happy with the Eagles, will you?
I don’t think anyone can be perfectly happy with any team, unless, I guess they have won a SB and can win more, and even still, most teams in the true FA has some sort of hole.
I’m not happy with the Eagles because I think there is too good a chance they’re on the wrong path.
why do you feel that way?
I have had strong suspicions for a while that Chip Kelly is one of those coaches who busts because he believes his system can compensate for lack of talent. Talent on O is…kind of low. It’s rather evenly spread out, so this could be a team that beats poorly coached, disorganized defenses, but in no way can we score truely at will.
i think he’s doing what he needs to do. we get tons of yds between the 20ss no rz. so he got a power back. i think he’s going to get a better guard. and we’ll get a big body wr all to help imrpove the redzone. Especially if we do get MM we’ll have no issue moving the ball.
bird in hand, man, bird in hand, first!
The thing is though, you never seem happy with any player or personnel move.
Really? I don’t remember commenting much on 2011, but I did sort of approve of the Fireman, and the Dream Team stuff. I can’t remember 2012 moves, except that we had an excellent draft. There hasn’t been much in the way of sexiness about Eagles offseasons in 2013 and 2014, I guess. And I’m…not happy about 2015.
And seriously, were 2013 and 2014 particularly successful offseasons, other than not being crazy in drafts 2013, and having a rather bad offseason in 2014?
Just setting up the push for Webb.
Yup. He’d be an old lotto ticket, but he’s MY lotto ticket.
How do you think the locker room was a factor in the maclin decision? I thought he was #culture
Andy Reid.
gore averaged 5ypc running from shotgun last season.
That’s huge. Do you know how other top backs fared from the shotgun?
better than mccoy. probably. Stat came from ESPN, so they just compared mccoy and gore.
Thanks. Yea, I don’t think Shady was getting 5 from the shotgun.
he like BB are much better EW runners, wouldn’t call him a 1 cut guy.
A shah post (a long one, too) I actually agree 100% with? Chip really has upset the firmament.
Sooooo…….Any interest in Percy Harvin?
look carefully tweet is fake
Praise the Lord and pass the championship rings.
It’s fake
Darn! There is a lot of that today oreofester. And the martinis and PBRs are kicking in. My reading comprehension out the window.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT BALLS.
edit- Fuck me. That hurt.
Why would you quote a fake account!???
The craziness of the Internet amuses me
LIES.
https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/574760321480437761
I said it was fake on the first line.
Many of us are too blurry eyed to notice.
I skipped to the tweet that said “BREAKING ”
You’re on my shit list.
Are we now responsible for people not actually reading the words we type? Because, if so, I am offended by your threat, “I skipped to BREAK your shit.” which I read by focusing on capitalized words, verbs, and profanity.
I see you say it’s false but why would you even post that? Haven’t we already been screwed by one false report today?
This.
Eh, consider it a public service warning. He led with the statement that it is fake. I think that is fair. It probably saved some unsuspecting twitterer from being duped and posting it five minutes later.
So McCourty back in NE…DAMNIT!!
Searcy is still out there.
The difference between McCourty and any other FA safety on the market is so wide, even Riley Cooper can find a way to get open in all that space.
my bar is set low, no nate allen.
No Devin or Mac…bad day
Yeah, looks that way.
This is exactly what I was fearing. All the top free agents staying with their teams. Such a shame Mac didn’t stay..
were helping a lot of ppl get paid
I am pretty sure Morton would say that Chip set the franchise back 5 years today.
Christ, I almost forgot.
lol. Miss him…
Anyone know whatever happened to him?
He swapped bodies and got GEAGLE’d.
You didn’t thank me for setting you up for that punch line.
I wouldn’t mind a planters punch now
We’re back to the discussion about being pissed…
I still am.
Discussing or getting pissed?
He got super salty when Tommy called him out in a post and never showed up again. I still have several screen grabs on my phone hoping he comes back so I can call him out!!
maybe Tommy should call out someone else…
Or just do what Sheil did.
Yes, ICDogg.
Are you kidding?!
It’s clearly Balhoopi who is the instigator.
It’s not Baloophi’s fault, he’s on some red meat and porridge diet and it’s made him go all loopy.
You damn LA people with your fancy schmancy diets.
And because we didn’t sign Suh, or whomever he said would suck in the draft and turned out to be good
think he’s token over at 24/7
So we missed out on the top target, overpaid for a corner, let our #1 wide out walk, and gave healthy contracts to a backup QB and aging back…sweet
And we’ve been waiting months for these moves
Honestly I was never really satisfied with Maclin as our #1.
No one left to replace him though unless they want to move Cameron back at wr
Then you’re going to be even less satisfied with our #1 next year, because whoever replaces him isn’t going to be as good as he is.
Time for seppuku.
Or we filled a huge hole in our secondary, didn’t overpay a #2 WR, solidified our back up QB situation and signed the perfect stopgap RB for our scheme at a quarter of the Shady’s cap hit.
It’s all spin, man. Time is a flat circle.
I don’t hate all the move but my pessimistic spin was glorious
Really don’t think we overpaid for Maxwell. Payed market price. You’re not going to get your #1 target at every position. As far as Maclin goes, while I’m not totally convinced KC is going to get him, if you don’t think it’s wise to pay a WR what he’s asking then you shouldn’t pay that to them just because you missed out on another position. Sometimes that factors in and you might be willing to increase your offer slightly but if you think a top WR in your offense should only get $6 or $7M a year you’re not all of a sudden going to offer them $10M a year. Releasing all those guys wasn’t just about this year anyway.
It’s still a very hot take so I reserve the right to change my opinion, but our offense was good not great. Can’t just switch out McCoy for Gore and Maclin for a #2 type WR and not expect to see a drop-off. Of course we’ll see who we bring in to be our #1 receiver first.
Also Maclin had such a strong rapport with Foles in clutch moments. Put this into the growing bin of evidence suggesting Foles is gone.
Your right. We shouldn’t have gotten Maxwell? And we should have over paid Maclin? See what I did there?
I’m being super pessimistic I’m Fina with Maxwell move, Sanchez and Gore moves are meh but I get them it’s the sting of the other 2 I’m feeling
I didn’t think we would get both but I was hopefully. There are still some good FA safeties. Maclin does hurt, and I am pissed about it. I see three options out of this. Torry Smith, Andre Johnson somehow, or make a play on a receiver high in the draft.
As anon told me, Torry is signing with SF.
Andre would look good in green.
Sucks but you can never get really pissed off too much when a guy signs with his current team for less. Not much you can do there. Even less when said team just won the Super Bowl.
With that said, why was Maclin the only jackass who didn’t do that today?
So, 1 upgrade, a couple of downgrades, and 1 not exciting stay-in-place move.
and FA hasn’t actually started yet.
2 upgrades. Alonso has to be factored in.
fair enough
Wow. Glass half empty???
Alonso is an upgrade over Ryans let alone the garbage we trotted out most of the 2nd half of the season.
Maxwell is an upgrade over either Cary or Brad.
Gore is a slight step down from Shady, but I’m not convinced the dropoff will be as severe as some fear.
Losing Mac hurts but he’s not irreplaceable.
Still not done making moves. Wait til the dust settles before assuming the worst.
not assuming anything, just summarizing the day
1st and goal from the 5…who scores more often, McCoy or Gore?
chris polk 🙂
Can’t stay healthy getting under a hundred touches a year. He’d break down by game three if we tried to ride him as a number one.
i was joking
np. I like Polk. Shame he can’t be counted on.
that`s why McCoy is in Buffalo, and Gore is in Philly.
How are we getting to the 5
Mark Sanchez silly!
Getting to the 5? We are going to START at the 5 with our defense and special teams.
Chip saw that Shady Dancer was not getting it done, which is why McCoy was on the sidelines more often than not when one or two yards were needed to score, and why he is being paid by Buffalo, and Gore will be cashing Lurie`s paychecks.
I think Alonso is an upgrade. Dude FA didn’t even technically start yet. I’m upset over Maclin, I didn’t expect to get both Mccourty and Maxwell.
Writing on the wall suggests the team is expecting a rookie QB contract on the books. Although the world has seemed to have already made up their mind on which QB that’s going to be, it could just as easily be Hundley. Actually, much more easily.
McCourty got $10M a year from Pats. Lot to pay a safety. Count me unconvinced that a top safety is worth more than a top CB.
Bring on Searcy
So plan B it is. Will be interesting who they get between Searcy/Parker
So Revis is probably going to the Jets
Or to us. I kid I kid
Doubt it. That rumor is only from the jets. I bet the pats.
That would make him the highest paid S in the NFL.
5 years 47.5M we probably offered it, not surprised he took a little less to stay in NE
I still don’t think he was ever leaving
Pats are going to have to release Revis or renegotiate his deal.
Is it possible we make a play for him?! Shocker!
not enough cap room
Scary part . . . given what we just paid Maxwell, can you imagine how much Revis would want from us?
$16 mm/year? Which is what he gets now.
Cant imagine, 60 M for 3 years?
lol…
sounds about right 😛
Jeremy Maclin
@JeremyMaclin18
Eagles fans are a little salty. But who cares I’m a Chief!
Its not him!
Good for him. Otherwise I would punch him in the face.
That would help shake the salt off at least.
Its fake!
Damn! That’s 2 in a row I’ve fallen for now. Maybe time to put down the bottle.
Since there’s no Mac and McC, how much is left in our books? I would say lets make a cheeky offer to the Chiefs for Houston. Not 2 1st round picks, but I would be willing to part with our #20…
I still wouldn’t give up 20 and give or take 36mil
and no franklin.
Stefen Wisniewski or Clint Boling
i like both
Seriously tho, I’m going to be VERY confused if we don’t sign Boling.

#Patriots S Devin McCourty will sign a 5-year, $47.5M contract, source said. Wow. And… turned down more elsewhere
He didn’t want to leave so we can’t say we should have paid him instead of maxwell.
^ this
Yeah, sad, but that should put the ‘we should have got McCourty instead’ people to bed.
Good point but still frustrating. Cmon rahim
Soo, our guys show zero loyalty while pretty much every other big FA decides to stay home. I blame tebow.
gotta blame chip gutting the team, but it is what it is.
Update: $28.5M guaranteed for McCourty
More than Max
We can continue hatred for patriots full force
Yous fooolz,
Don’t worry, Mac will be an Eagle 4 life! No worriezzzz, it’s FOlezzzz to Maclinzzzzz, yous foooolzzzz!
https://twitter.com/JimmyKempski/status/574760336949186561
I hate you, Kempski 😛
He prolly like yuusss, now I can get more balls thrown my way…but I am only gonna catch like 71% of them.
You’re overly optimistic.
I just don’t get the Gore signing. We have a 32 year old back, a 34(maybe?) year old back, and Polk (who I love but has some durability issues). I wonder if the contract will allow us to cut him during camp for no loss if we find a young guy in the draft.
in last 5 years gore has started more games than shady. he also averaged 5.0ypc running from shot gun last year. don’t think we’re just out there getting random guys. people thought sproles was too old as well.
List of seasons where a back 32 or older ran for more than 4.0 ypa, with any kind of real workload:
History does not look favorably upon this contract.
http://www.sportingcharts.com/…
did list look any different for 31yo rbs?
It wasn’t pretty in general, more 4. And it was just the top 50 statistical seasons for backs >30.
not surprising. I expect Gore to have a Sproles like year – with contributions from an UDFA
We should have a decent shot at alot of good guys on day 3.
Couple of guys I particularly like:
Josh Robinson

John Crockett:

Thoughts on David Cobb?
I like him. I’m still pretty early into the backs, I’ve only watched most of them casually as up until a week ago I didn’t think we would do more than take a day 3 flyer on somebody. Overall though Cobb doesn’t look like a 230lbs back which is a good thing. He has some lateral wiggle. TBD about vision or his transition to a zone scheme.
The perfect fit for this offense is Ameer but I don’t think that’s going to happen unless teams get really freaked out by his heavy college workload.
Thanks. I like Cobb a lot. Doesn’t Ameer have a serious case of fumblitis? That would drive Chip mad I think.
Had 4, lost 2 as a Senior.
13 total over his 4 years…that’s a lot
Keep in mind he had 886 touches. I’m not too concerned given his entire body of work.
If we draft him, do you think Gore will be okay with the tag Crocket and Tubbs?
looked like Tecmo Bowl
baaaaad tackling. Still, impressive run.
not to mention average running back decline per year after 28 doesn’t plateau into mediocrity with age, it gets steeper. (Saw a pretty staggering chart with the data when someone was breaking down the shady trade, now i can’t find it 🙁 )
This one?

It’s a risk, no doubt. Managing his workload will be more important than it was when we had Shady.
EWww good post, thanks.. Still not concerned with risk reward on that contract, still plenty to spend
how many of those guys ran out of the shotgun?
just thinking longer term. Not having any young potential developing behind the starter isn’t a great feeling. 2 Veterans likely on their last contract in Philly
Gore and Sproles will be 32. Gore is a one cut, N/S runner. Sure, we all would have preferred Gore 5 years ago, but I’m very excited to see what he can do.
Like others said has to be lowering expectations for mm trade but how can they be sure to land that.. Guessing mccourty just declined what can you do.. Other places still to spend, I’ll wait for now. Frustrating as a fan so far, you gotta reach to stay positive
I’m thinking Bellichick upped the ante for McCourty. Jets are going hard after Revis, and losing both of those guys would seriously impact his D.
So who has any insight on these safeties still available? Cant say I’ve seen any of them play…
searcy and rahime moore. moore was with undlin in denver.
Rahim Moore is decent. Better than anything on roster to pair with jenkins
D3FB: What is your take on both Searcy and Parker?
I dunno. Not a huge pro personnel guy. Can’t say I watched much/any of Buffalo of KC’s defense other than in the background.
Off topic, but did you scout McCourty in College? Im curious your thoughts on him and what criteria would it take in a CB to make the switch to S and become a stud.
Nah, 2011 was the first year I really started to pay more attention than the casual fan. McCourty was 2010.
Scary part . . . Geagle’s opinion on Searcy in particular would be very useful. I know he watched a lot if not all of the Buffalo games. What I’ve heard 2nd hand is Searcy had a really good season this year, but this is the only productive year he’s had. Kind of similar to Maxwell in that you’re gambling on fairly little playing time equaling long term success.
Took over for Byrd and did pretty well from what I hear.
He got a lot of starts year before with Byrd hurt too. He’s been solid
I feel ya. Maxwell I have quite a bit of confidence in. Searcy is more of a mystery, but re-uniting Alonso with Searcy would be quite nice.
We should have enough money to sign Moore and House now.
Maxwell House would be pretty legit. Tho I have more intrigue with Searcy/Parker over Moore.
Just spend it already ha.. This second level tier always takes longer to play out
Just to make sure– Moore is the dude with the terribly timed jump, no?
Yes
blargh
Earlier in his career, has improved since
Yeah I know. Also, shouldn’t judge a player on a single bad play. Everyone has them, just really bad when that’s the only play anyone really remembers about the player in question. Combine with the Eagles struggles with giving up deep passes the last two seasons and it’s not a pleasant thought.
That play won’t be the first thing you think of after you read this.
http://mmqb.si.com/2014/05/28/nfl-denver-broncos-rahim-moore-compartment-syndrome/
Thanks for the link, Tyler. Good article. Tough break for him and huge props for battling back the way he has. Makes me want to pull for him personally, but doesn’t convince me he’d be a good fit for the defense.
was pretty good last year, didn’t let getting abused bother him.
Surprisingly enough — TATE is not exploding over the loss of Maclin
Maybe the Eagles should have traded for Marshall when they had the chance
I think Kelly loves him some Huff.
Now, I may be pretty optimistic about most of Kelly’s moves but if Huff’s pencilled in as a starter, that would shake my confidence.
Kelly’s going to get a WR because we are thin there now. If it is Matthews, Huff and Cooper, who’s left to sub when one goes down?
Great physical talent, but I doubt he’d fit Kelly’s #culture.
All signs point to young, cost controlled WR’s. He thinks they are easily replaceable.
I liked the Shady move ALOT. I think Gore will be good for us and an upgrade in RZ but overall a slight downgrade at talent. I get the Toddfather was old, injury prone and expensive, but I think Tobin is a downgrade talent wise. I started last week really excited but now I’m just confused. This off season is very contradicting. I’m happy about the Maxwell signing, and we needed it, but we did overpay which filled a need. So we don’t sign Maclin, a homegrown talent, because we don’t want to overspend. So now we have another huge need. Chip values the Oline so he lets Herremans go, says he is high on Tobin who was an obvious downgrade. It just seems as though there may have been a plan but it is starting to unravel. I thought you keep Maclin and go high pick in draft at Oline since its a weak Oline draft. Now it appears you may have to go WR earlier then thought. I get the plug and play concept, but I think it only works if you have someone like Brady.
It just seems as though there may have been a plan but it is starting to unravel. … the thing is is it`s not your plan,so how could you think that it`s unraveling? It`s Kelly`s plan, and all we can do is watch as it plays out. Relax, it`s gonna be a long 6 months till Game 1 kicks off.
Lol it’s because we have opinions and that’s why there is a comment section. I’m not freaking out, I’m just disappointed because of the contradictions and the message it can send to our homegrown talent. The whole fun part of the off season is guessing the plan and hopeing it works out how you think it will. None of us truly know their plan, but we make educated guesses on what it can be. Maybe I was right and it didn’t go how Chip thought it would. Maybe I’m wrong. Because you know as little as I do who are you to tell me that what I thought their plan was is not correct. Same goes if I were telling you your guess is wrong. However, isn’t it entirely plausible that what they wanted to do didn’t go right? Off seasons never work out exactly how teams want them to. They reportedly made McCourty the highest priority, and wanted to retain Maclin. They weren’t able to. So doesn’t that suggest right there what they wanted to do didn’t go right?
I was concerned about the message that overpaying for Maclin would send. I am not happy about BG wearing blue, and I was hoping that Maclin would return, but I’m really more concerned about who will be our starting OLB predator next season.
Ugh is right. 2 yrs/9 mm with 5.5 guaranteed is grossly overpaying for Mark Sanchez. Yet Kelly’s willing to let Maclin walk over a couple million extra dollars? A receiving corps of Huff, Matthews, and Cooper isn’t gonna scare anyone. It’s quite possibly the worst starting group in the NFL. I’m sure he’ll bring in another veteran, but there is no other player available who is remotely in Maclin’s class as a receiver in this FA class. This offense is going to take a step back next season. Book it.
Signing Maxwell doesn’t even make up for it. He’s a good cornerback and an upgrade on Cary Williams but he’s not one of the five best CBs in football, which is what he’s being paid like.
I have no idea why Chip is willing to overpay for other teams’ players while nickel-and-diming his own into leaving town, but I don’t like it a bit.
4.5 a year for a top backup isn’t over paying. I think sanchez actually made more last year.
He made 2.5
No, he made $2.25M last year with incentives that could boost his pay to $4M.
As mentioned above, he made about half as much last year. And calling him a “top backup” is a stretch. He’s an okay backup, but nothing more.
The draft isn’t even here and everyone is going “Desean’s gone” over Maclin? Lol
We already had a number of positions that were in crying need of an infusion of young talent before the moves of the last week. Now we can add RB and WR to that list. You only have so many high draft picks, and we’ll have few or none if we actually get Mariota.
Teams get better by filling in existing holes, not creating new ones. It’s possible the Chiefs grossly overpaid for Maclin and the Eagles made a sound financial decision by letting him walk – but there is no arguing that it doesn’t make them worse on the field to do so. The likelihood of another free agent receiver being as good as Maclin is very small, and the likelihood of a draft pick replacing him adequately is near zero (and picking a WR would mean not picking a guy at another position).
Maclin isn’t irreplaceable in the long run.Too many Eagles fans just don’t have faith in Kelly’s offensive mind and methods.
I’m not saying he’s a championship coach yet but they have drafted Ertz and Matthews and Huff may be good also, he did flash a tiny bit and he needs to relax.
Yeah I don’t get this. Willing to overspend on outside talent but not on our own.
Absolutely agree we’re overpaying Sanchez. Still, not a lot of good choices when you’re looking for backups unless you’re convinced Barkley finally makes good which Chip clearly isn’t.
Maxwell is a solid upgrade over Cary and he’s making just over 10mil a season. That’s good but not elite money. It’s the guaranteed money that’s over the top frankly.
Other’s pointed out that Chip doesn’t seem to value the WR position and based on his history at Oregon, that certainly seems to be the case. I think he’d have liked to have Maclin back but only at what he considered reasonable. I really hope we’re not depending on Huff to start or even be the #3, but I wouldn’t be shocked if that’s what happens.
Overall, I’d say our D took two solid steps forward with the acquisitions of Maxwell and Alonso while our O took a step back with the losses of Herremans, Maclin, and Shady and signing of Gore. I’m doing the glass half full thing at this point, but only the regular season will tell the tale.
Expect us to sign a replacement(and upgrade) for Herremanns in FA.
Would certainly make me happy and wouldn’t surprise me. Also, suspect we’ll sign a veteran WR while we’re at it. Trying to not to be Geagle and do the predictive thing 😀
I’ll do it. Cecil Shorts at WR. Either Clint Boling or Stefen Wisniewski at OG. Wisniewski played center for Oakland but can play RG too.
I’d rather have someone more dynamic than Shorts. Boling or Wisniewski would be welcome additions.
Edit – Now if you are pretending to be Geagle, you have to disparage me and claim I have no idea what I am talking about. Feel free to call me names while doing so 😛 (Pouring it on poor Geagle, but he did leave himself wide open today.)
Let me ask you something? Do you understand football? It’s pretty clear to anyone of any ounce of intelligence that Shorts is the best option and if you don’t understand that you should just stop watching the game. I’ve tried to lay it out for you and everyone else on this board and it amazes me that you’re not yet able to comprehend things. Stop paying attention to the media, none of which have any clue whatsoever, and try to use some common sense.
I really thought you were him for a minute there. Nicely done.
Needs to add typos.
G and G dopplegangers.
Shorts is injury prone. I’d go after Andre Johnson if his asking price isn’t unrealistic.
I am more high on Huff then you are, but that’s if he is in the slot. Which would mean Mathews would move to outside in which I don’t think Kelly will do. I’m pissed about Maclin, you over spend on one need, but refuse to on another which is a homegrown talent, which in turn creates another glaring need. I get the devalue of WR, and the plug and play at that position. It makes sense, as long as you have a Tom Brady. You can scheme all you want in this league but you also need talent. I was behind the Shady move. I’m not behind this Maclin thing. If he truly wants MM he needs talent around him.
I realize Huff’s talented, but his mistakes last season outweighed his production. If he wasn’t an Oregon alum, I’m convinced he’d have been nailed to the bench after his second bone-headed turnover. MSIII is clearly talented and couldn’t sniff the field for most of the season. If Chip trades most of the next two drafts away to get MM, he’s going to need to spend money on quality FA, even at positions like WR.
I don’t want to go after MM, and I believe if we were to do so signing Maclin would have been a bigger priority. Yes Huffs mistakes outweighed the production, and I think that’s why he saw the field less, and due to his early season injury. However he seems to be a hard worker and I’m sure he is working on his hands and ball carrying while studying the playbook. You can see the kid has serious toughness and YAC potential. He is a violent runner for a WR. If he puts in the work i think he could be a very dangerous KR/PR and slot receiver in this league.
How do you know they won’t sign a WR? Mariota needs maclin and Foles doesn’t? seems like a big stretch…i guess your point is they would be more comfortable trading picks but they could have plans you don’t know about.
Obviously they have plans none of us know about. I was just discussing a scenario. They probably are going to sign a WR, which will be a downgrade over Maclin. Any receiver we sign now will not in anyway be considered a number 1. Wouldn’t be a problem if you had another solid outside receiver, but we don’t. We have the worst rated outside receiver in the league in Cooper. Right now it’s possible we might have the worst WR group in the NFL. It will change, but it just won’t be as good as if Maclin were here.
You make good points but Mariota just turned 21 in fall, there is time to build around him.
As long as the negotiation went, both sides expressing optimism, I have to believe that Maclin made decision solely on $$. That is his right, and more power to him, but I do believe that Kelly wanted him, just not for a ransom. I know that it is subjective, but Kelly seems cognizant of position limits on cap, and if he thinks Maclin was demanding more than Kelly deemed fair, I agree with his decision. Conversely, Eagles appear to have very little revenue tied up in the secondary, and getting a corner worth what Maxwell is going to get is not nearly as simple, in my opinion, as replacing Maclin’s productivity.
Jaguars to sign free agent Julius Thomas to a five-year contract worth “close” to $45 million.
The Denver Post reports free agent G/T Orlando Franklin’s deal with San
Diego will average $7.2 million per year and include $14 million
guaranteed.
Not as much as I expected for him.
This would make him the 4th highest paid G in the NFL.
From what I’ve read, Franklin will play RT with Fluker shifting to RG.
i’d also put jarret boykin on my FA looksie list.
People are bitching too much about Sanchez’ contract. He’s paid the rate of a backup QB.
I don’t think it’s what he’s making so much as it’s Philly paying him.
Wonder if Eagles would have interest in trading for Mike Wallace if cost was minimal. Due $9.85M in 2015, which is pricy, but had 10 TDs playing for QB who didn’t want to throw deep ball.
As much as I’ve heard about him whining in Miami, I doubt he fits Chip’s #culture. That’s the biggest problem with most of the talented WR who are left available at this point. Almost all of them are either over the hill or headcases. Oy.
I see more play with Vincent Jackson, Eagles reportedly had trade interest in him last season, his salary (9.7m) is in-line with the reported Maclin proposal, he’s big, AND he’s turning 32 this year staying consistent with Chip’s preference for aging vets (D. Sprizzle and Gore). Could probably get it done by dangling V. Curry to the Bucs.
problem is even if we sign worilds we need pass rushing and curry can be unstoppable at times.. if you can sign crabtree for less keep curry
New post!
What about someone like Wayne as a short term stop gap. I’m not in love with dumping big money on any of the available free agent WR and though I wouldn’t be opposed for us drafting a WR we would need some veteran experience with our very green WR core. Wayne absolutely lost a step but runs good routes and I’ve never heard anything negative about him.
