Happy Draft Day!

Posted: April 30th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 1,010 Comments »

It is just after 630am and Marcus Mariota isn’t an Eagle. What the heck is Chip Kelly doing? Lazy jerk.

I’ve been following the draft for more than 20 years and I’ve never seen anything like this. The team with the 20th overall pick is being talked about more than the team with the top pick. And I don’t think it is even close. The football world wants Marcus Mariota to be an Eagle in the worst way. It would make for a compelling story and it would be fun to watch. Beyond that, this isn’t a sexy draft at the top.

The Eagles are doing everything they can to move up for Mariota. I would link to this story, except everyone has basically written a version of it. And it is all based on word from league sources or people in the know.

Peter King has the newest info up.

But there is this X factor, not to complicate this too much: One NFL source in Chicago late Wednesday night told me Cleveland believes it has a good chance before the draft to deal for Bradford. So there’s that. But if we’ve learned nothing about the draft over the years, we’ve learned to expect the unexpected. Such as, there’s a real chance Mariota could end up on a team other than the Titans by nightfall today.

If the Eagles deal Bradford for pick 19, that would help their ammo supply in the attempt to move up with Tennessee. Trading picks 19, 20, a player or two and probably a pick next year could get you to #2. Tennessee has a roster with holes so there is logic to this deal for them.

We’ll see.

King concludes with this.

I’ve been wrong far, far more often than I’ve been right in my draft history. But I think the Titans are more likely to take Mariota than to trade him, because the options for them at quarterback are just not good enough for a team looking toward the future. We’ll all know for sure tonight.

I still think the odds are against the Eagles pulling this off because there are so many variables (many of which the Eagles don’t control). But it would be pretty darn cool if the Eagles could emerge from tonight with Marcus Mariota as the team’s QB of the future.

* * * * *

For those who want to listen to me talk about the draft, you have 2 options.

That was me and Chuck Stanley talking for about an hour, maybe a little more. We approached the draft by looking at positions. Where do the Eagles have holes? Which players might fit them?

You also have the option of me and Jimmy Bama going round by round with Eagles targets for almost 2 glorious hours.

Enjoy.

Sadly, I might have to deal with this situation. Some of the best mock draft people out there are giving Randall to the Eagles at 20. That means they are hearing rumors or making very educated guesses.

Randall is a talented, but flawed player. Terrific cover skills. Highly erratic tackler. He might be the poor man’s Earl Thomas.

Watch this highlight reel and you will see an aggressive, athletic DB who can make plays in the box, in man coverage or down the field. This guy looks like a 1st rounder.

Then watch the Oregon State game. Tackling is not so awesome. Don’t let your kids see this or they might be scarred for life.

Talented, but flawed. Not my choice at pick 20.

* * * * *

I put together a 1st round mock draft for ScoutsNotebook.

I didn’t go with any trades so the Eagles stayed at pick 20 and took…

I also put together a Top 100 list.

If you see “ER” beside a player, that means Edge Rusher. The blurred lines between OLB/DE/Hybrid guy are just too much. Just lump those guys together as ERs.

So, three hours of podcasts, a couple of lists to read, and constantly checking for updates and breaking news? Yep, looks like today is shot.

Happy draft day indeed! Starts around 1 am my time, have to convince myself to go to sleep and find out what happened in the morning. Though I seem to try that every year…

Are you doing your massive draft preview article as you’ve done in past years, Tommy? Understand if you didn’t have time, that’s a big undertaking. Does the podcast serve as this year’s draft preview?

I think the thinking with Randall, if they take him, is that he has the strengths to excel in the pros and his weaknesses are things they think they can correct. They’ve made the Eagles’ defensive players better tacklers.

PopCorn – Check. Remote – Check. Bradford Jersey – Check.
    ….
OD (to continue the conversation) – I hear what your saying. MM is all that and more. I just don’t think the NFL is thinking in the same lines(how great MM is) because he’d be targeted by more teams fighting to get to the 2 spot. It doesn’t sound like the Titans have 2 teams to pit against each other to driver up the value. There’s CK connection and that might be it. IF MM went to Miami, would all this noise be happening? IF MM is worth all that, I expect CK to go all in and get him – at any cost. IF MM is that good, nothing should stop CK. But that’s coming from “ChaosEagleYankfan”. “CommonSense” EagleYankFan says this isn’t as close to happening as some people think.
    ….
Whoever CK is targeting – I hope he gets him.

Its silly to think “well, that didn’t work out for the Bills”. 1) this isn’t the Bills. 2) this IS CK. AND he’s from NJ. Match made in heaven.

You spout all this stuff about the reason for trading McCoy and letting go of Maclin is because too much was invested in the offense and you have to shore up the defense and you’re going to trade away 3 of your top 6 defensive players?

Well Curry is a part time player who can play in base, I think fans love Kendricks way more than the coaches and Cox while great, has far less value than any competent QB.

Just look at JJ Watt, even one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history cant get his team a winning record.

  22. 22 Greg Richards said at 7:50 AM on April 30th, 2015:

  25. 25 GEAGLE said at 8:07 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Come on dude, you can’t tell me that if we take Cox out and include an extra future first it would kill the deal. No matter how good Cox is every team would rather have an extra 1st

  26. 26 Anders said at 8:11 AM on April 30th, 2015:

I like that deal. Kendrick is going to be traded no matter what, and Curry is just a role player for us, but can be a starter somewhere else. So that leaves Cox. While he’s a great player and is disruptive along the line, he’s much easier to replace than a QB.

  37. 37 MattE said at 3:25 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  61. 61 Bert's Bells said at 8:34 AM on April 30th, 2015:

High picks usually land on crappy teams, making it even tougher to judge.

I think Robert Griffin III, for instance, could have been somebody if he didn’t get sucked in the Dan Snyder morass.

  62. 62 bsuperfi said at 8:48 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Totally agree re RGIII. I loved him coming out of college. If he had been properly developed as a QB, would things have turned out differently? His personality is kinda irksome and he doesn’t seem like a team player. But could things have been different if he ended up in a different locker room?

  63. 63 Bert's Bells said at 9:49 AM on April 30th, 2015:

RIght. I think most of these guys have had so much smoke blown up their asses all their lives that they are “difficult” personalities. I’m not saying Griffin wouldn’t have been a Subway-shilling jackass if he played for Sean Peyton but he’d have a better shot.

  64. 64 unhinged said at 9:18 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Re: Moving from #20 to #2, 850 points to 2,600 points:

    #20: 850
    #19 via Sam Bradford: 875
Fletcher Cox, valued as the #12 pick: 1200

In other words, that should be enough to get you there. Saw one tweet that says Fletcher Cox is the best available defensive talent in the draft – I’d agree given all the issues with the Edge guys. Obviously, contract is a consideration, but so is the value of Cox being a “known” quantity. And you have two more years of him at a good contract number. I think the #12 pick in this draft is *under* valuing Cox.

Giving up the other picks and players would be way overpaying, which I understand you have to do for a QB. But that deal is insane.

  66. 66 GEAGLE said at 8:19 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Some fanbase tomorrow like the Jags get to wake up tomorrow celebrating the addition of the top player in the draft Dante Fowler.. Wonder what Eagles fans feel like when we open our eyes tomorrow morning and reality kicks in….

Part of me wants to see chip trade half the team for Marriota, so I can laugh when all te donkey fans and media who have been saying for months that we need to trade whatever it takes to get “talent”, I bet half those people will turn around and rip the Eagles for trading too much lol

  67. 67 oreofestar said at 8:21 AM on April 30th, 2015:

  69. 69 Alistair Middlemiss said at 8:26 AM on April 30th, 2015:

I would rather see players traded than picks at this point in general – although i am not a fan of trading Cox because i think he is becoming a transformative player.

The reality is that if you trade Curry/Kendricks/Bradford to ‘fund’ the move for Mariota you are clearing a lot of cap both this year and ‘future years’ off your books. Probably 25+ Million per year in 2016-2018 (based on planning to retain those 3 players). That is 3 players in FA to help fill holes.

  70. 70 GEAGLE said at 9:04 AM on April 30th, 2015:

And I certainly don’t give a shit about cap space when our coach doesn’t respect it and spends more money then every single team on the friggin RB position of all positions,…. What’s he going to do with the Cap space? Spend it on 3rd and 4th string TE’s? 🙂

  92. 92 Alex Karklins said at 8:37 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Trading away Fletcher Cox would be a deal breaker for me. I believe that Mariota is the best QB in this draft and would take this offense into overdrive, but the fact remains that the Eagles still had one of the best offenses in the league without him. If Kendricks and/or Boykin need to be dealt, I would send them to other teams for more draft picks in the later rounds and make a play for Bryce Petty to groom as the QB of the future, while adding OL, WR, and DB depth. Giving up Cox would gut this defense and be a true step backward for the team as a whole.

  93. 93 Steve Smegal said at 8:39 AM on April 30th, 2015:

I’m sort of coming around to taking the step backwards. I don’t think this team is winning a superbowl with sam bradford. So yeah, next year will not be as good but its a lot easier building a team when you have the QB in place.

  94. 94 GEAGLE said at 8:39 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Yup…no matter what we do at QB we will be a top 5 offense, so it’s not worth the damage we will do to our defense

  95. 95 IrishEagle25 said at 8:41 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Cox is a great player, but a QB you think is as good as Peyton Manning (Chip quote) is much much more important, a top 5 regular season offense is not the same as an offense that will will in the play-offs. Losing him is a step back on D, but it is a bigger jump forward on O if you are convinces Mariota is great.

  96. 96 Steve Smegal said at 8:43 AM on April 30th, 2015:

And while Fletch is great, he plays a relatively unimportant position in our scheme.

  97. 97 Alex Karklins said at 8:56 AM on April 30th, 2015:

But he is also one of the few players who can completely dominate in a two-gap scheme.

  98. 98 Steve Smegal said at 8:59 AM on April 30th, 2015:

I get this but we’re talking about a QB. I’m still on the fence about whether to trade up for MM but I’ve stopped worrying about how we fill our other needs if we do. It’s impossible. We’re signing up for a mini rebuild which is fine if we come out the other side with a franchise QB.

  99. 99 Alex Karklins said at 9:04 AM on April 30th, 2015:

To rebuild you need draft picks, though . . . I’ll confess that I keep on going back and forth on this issue. The potential of this offense with Mariota at the helm is really exciting.

  100. 100 eagleyankfan said at 9:08 AM on April 30th, 2015:

what da. I’ll disagree on how important Cox is here…

  101. 101 Steve Smegal said at 9:31 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Would you rather a scheme perfect QB or a scheme perfect DE?

  102. 102 eagleyankfan said at 9:44 AM on April 30th, 2015:

oh, the perfect fit QB — but it was the “unimportant in our scheme”. I think Cox is very important.

  103. 103 BreakinAnklez said at 9:52 AM on April 30th, 2015:

I’d prefer the known commodity. No one has any earthly idea how good Mariota will be in the NFL regardless of how perfect he may or may not be in this scheme.

We know Fletcher Cox is a bonafide stud we can build a dominant defense around.

  104. 104 eagleyankfan said at 9:52 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Bingo! Known commodity is — this Eagles offense has been pretty awesome the last two years. How much more can Mariota possibly add?

I completely get the logic, and would accept a straight up Cox for #2 deal. It’s all of the other picks and players that make this too much of a gamble for my taste. If this deal happens, I really hope that it works out as you imagine.

  109. 109 unhinged said at 9:07 AM on April 30th, 2015:

You’ve got to have an exceptional imagination to envisage MM having anything close to PM’s pro career. Luck was a Peyton clone in terms of readiness and ability. Notwithstanding Kelly’s effusive feelings for his boy, MM is light years away from PM.

  110. 110 IrishEagle25 said at 9:20 AM on April 30th, 2015:

Im not saying I feel that way about him. Chip has been quotes as saying Mariota will win ‘multiple super bowls’ for whoever gets him. I believe Chip is convinced that Marcus is that good, or can be that good

I’ve got my case of Milwaukee’s Best Lite, 22 pieces of Popeye’s fried chicken “on order”, and my Eagles draft chart. I have a feeling that chart is going out the window by 8:30pm though. There are so many moving pieces that I don’t know how a deal for Mariota gets done but somehow I think it will happen.

Whatever deals need to be made to get Mariota have to come with contingencies. We need a deal in place with Tennessee before officially trading Bradford to Cleveland. And the deal with Tennessee would have to be contingent on Tampa selecting Winston, which I’m still not convinced is a sure thing.

As for sending Bradford to Cleveland, I wonder if the #12 pick isn’t still in play. Maybe Bradford plus a pick (acquired from dealing Kendricks) will get you #12 instead of #19?

My god, my head will be spinning all day. I hope my boss doesn’t expect me to get any work done.

Less than 12 hours till the draft starts. I’m really hoping that we don’t trade up for Mariota. If we do trade some of our ascending players then we’re not left with very good talent.

Cox has Hart waiting in the wings if he’s gone. Massive downgrade. An interesting name to throw in is Leterrius Walton. Raw guy but has potential to be an all-around 3-4 DE.

Kendricks has Demeco, Goode, and Acho behind him right now. We’ve been linked to Stephone Anthony, who’s just taller than Kendricks but will be cheaper. One or two of those guys won’t be on the team since I doubt we’ll carry 5 ILBs.

Boykin is probably leaving in FA if we do take a CB high. Thurmond is probably here to compete for either the outside or slot CB position. Honestly, I can see Chip picking up a wounded duck in Ifo cuz Oregon if we don’t take a CB within the first 2 rounds.

I imagine the trade we made with TN would not involve the Browns pick. If we were to trade Bradford to CLE it would be a 2nd trade after the Mariota deal. That means we would have to trade another future pick or picks to get Mariota but we’d also have the 19 pick this year which we could keep or trade for future pick(s). I also hope that his draft “crapshoot” talk is for public consumption only and that internally he’s been preaching — “A starter is available with every pick all the way to UDFAs and it’s up to us to find them.” I’m guessing that’s true. He’s made of great expectations.

WHICH IS WHY A POLYGRAPH MAKES SENSE.

It’s not only a P.R. tool, but law enforcement generally trust the results if the polygrapher is a reliable, ex-Bureau guy.

(The way it works is, you — as defense counsel — give the Q&A, with the graph, to the cops to let them have their own guy review it.)

  257. 257 anon said at 12:25 PM on April 30th, 2015:

yeah – wonder if that’s why the conversation is set for “after the draft”. Gotta negotiate on the examiner, time and date AND most importantly the questions. As a former prosecutor what kind of questions would you want asked / not want asked?

If i’m the defense attorney i want to limit it to (a) where were you at time of death, (b) did you kill her and maybe (c) did you ask someone kill her. Though undoubtedly they’re going to ask who sired the kid.

  258. 258 ACViking said at 12:43 PM on April 30th, 2015:

The whole Polygraph-sharing idea is premised on Collins having sworn up and down he’s not involved, obviously.

Next, no need to negotiate the polygrapher or the Q&A w/ the government. In most jurisdictions, there’s generally just a couple of guys who do this kind of work — the guy currently at the FBI and the guy who used to be at the FBI before him.

Also, I wouldn’t tell the government about the polygraph until my guy passes with the proverbial flying colors.

As counsel, you sit down with the polygrapher before the exam — without your client present — and lay out the type of case you have and what the issues are for your client. You tell the polygrapher what you definitely need to have answers to.

The polygrapher then figures out how to frame the questions. The best polygraphers are also former field agents, too, so they know how to ask questions you need answered, like:

    1. Did you ever physically hurt X?
    2. Did you ever want to physically hurt X?
    3. Do you know anyone who has physically harmed X?

Once you’ve talked to the polygrapher, he’ll sit down with the subject for about an hour to (i) get them comfortable and at ease, (ii) find out what kind of person they seem to be, and (iii) get answers to base-line questions like birth date, job, siblings, parents.

    Then it’s to the box . . .

A good polygraph takes about 2.5-3 hours. Amazing process.

  259. 259 anon said at 1:21 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Interesting, so the polygraph is “private” and they’d just submit the results to the government along with the rest of their “case” and say “see my guy didn’t do it”?

Does the govt ever insist on being in the room? Does the defense attorney need to present some sort of alternate theory?

I’d just be surprised the police would ever go for a polygraph that wasn’t done in their presence — but i’m learning a lot about how the govt operates that i didn’t want to know.

  260. 260 ACViking said at 1:26 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Polygraphs are conducted in a room with just the tester and the subject.

    Lawyers wait outside.

The theory is to eliminate distractions and stresses on the subject.

Prosecutors are very open to polygraph results for a couple of reasons.

    1. If the tester is someone they trust (former FBI agent), then the results are more likely to be trustworthy. The questions are the key.

    2. The ‘graph shows what kind of questions were asked, which is a product of what the lawyer told the tester.

So — even if the subject is found “truthful” — if the questions do NOT address the basic elements of the criminal activity in question, the polygraph reveals a great deal.

[That scenario, the non-critical questions, would be a last-ditch effort by counsel to avoid criminal charges and strictly for PR purposes.]

  261. 261 BreakinAnklez said at 1:35 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  263. 263 ACViking said at 1:28 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Prosecutors and defense counsel consider them an important tool.

They’re not dispositive. But very useful.

  264. 264 EagleNebula said at 2:11 PM on April 30th, 2015:

From my perspective, evidence brought into court is more about what the Jurors will believe and less about factual accuracy. For example, Prosecutors and Defense attorneys also build cases around eye whiteness testimony which is probably the least reliable evidence available (and has been proven to be time and time again). Human memory is not designed the way it is used in court, study after study has proven that dating back decades. Yet, if you mention that during jury selection, you will be among the first to be kicked off the jury. And it isn’t just me, Neil DeGrass Tyson spoke about getting excused from a jury for the same reason.

There are a ton of examples of the inaccuracy of polygraphs as well as the subjectivity involved in reading them (Penn and Teller did a great job on their show of showing this), yet they get presented as unbiased data, probably partly due to the way they are presented in popular media. Maybe it is just that I come from a discipline where both my methodology as well as my findings are scrutinized for validity. But, I have a lot of trouble basing any opinions on a tool that has shown to be unreliable.

  277. 277 edinburgheagle said at 12:28 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  279. 279 edinburgheagle said at 1:07 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Agree absolutely that Cooks is a better player and was a better prospect coming out, just saying size isn’t a red line at wide receiver. Dorsett can work the middle and his speed would keep safeties from overloading the box. If he can run a decent jet sweep he should help keep the backside defenders honest (if we stand pat at #20 or trade down Bradford is our QB and his legs wont scare anyone) which helps the zone read. We have some bigger receivers, one that can stretch the field would help diversify our options and makes a lot of sense to me.

  280. 280 RC5000 said at 1:33 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Dorsett would be a terrific complement in this offense. It is probably a stretch at 20. He’s probably a mid 2nd to early 3rd in this draft but it could depend on if/where the WR run is. I love Dorsett though and he is a great fit as a complementary player. Kelly may like him to stretch field vertically.

Polian made a good point this morning on mike n mike. Top 8 picks are solid but if they trade past that, they are giving up a lot in terms of what kind of player they can get. Of course the compensation will have to include additional 1s that they want high in a draft next season. That has to be a big consideration, how high the return is in this years draft moving from 2. They wont want to move too far down so I think that takes the Eagles out of it a bit without a 3rd team.

Is Fowler the best player in this draft? [QB-value issues aside]

What I mean is, unless USC’s Williams is the next JJ Watt — and will give you 12-14 sacks between the tackles — how can he be a better choice than an edge rusher like Fowler?

That is, if Fowler is the kind of player who’ll demand double teams on just about every passing down?

Just seems that in the NFL’s current flag-football era, having Fowler is having a defensive weapon way more impactful that a DT or a WR.

  318. 318 unhinged said at 1:37 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Having somebody as good as Williams in the trenches will make a guy like Fowler that much better. Neither, I suspect will be tremendous on a lousy defense. From what I am reading and hearing, Williams and Fowler and Scherff and White are viewed by most as the best at their positions. There’s daylight between Williams and the guy behind him, and less space between Fowler and the next best OLB, and a hair’s breadth between White and Cooper. Fowler would not be double-teamed on all passing downs because he’s athletic enough to foil double-teams by playing in coverage sporadically.

Until you know as much as you can about what information/evidence the government has, you want to be careful asking your client the $64 question.

You want him (or her) to understand the scope of the government’s evidence.

That’s better than asking, getting a bad answer, then tying your hands as to the kind of defense you can provide.

  496. 496 ACViking said at 3:20 PM on April 30th, 2015:

But, all the leaking of info from Tennessee makes it seem, to me at least, like they’re trying to generate interest and a strong market. 505. 505 Cafone said at 3:06 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  506. 506 Sean Stott said at 3:07 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  509. 509 Cafone said at 3:12 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  510. 510 GEAGLE said at 3:13 PM on April 30th, 2015:

    It was an absurd statement

  511. 511 Javi Echie said at 3:20 PM on April 30th, 2015:

My homerism? You’re valuing the players we lost more then him. Lets see Maclin replaces Jackson’s stats with no problem coming off a major injury so that production is easiey replaceable then Cox’s production. McCoy has been replaced by a player that had better production so theres that. Cole’s production had been steadily declining and replaced by a younger version of himself. Foles can be replaced.

So my point is Cox is a 25 year old stud dlineman, the best player on this team, that doesn’t mean chip views him as such. Also Jason Peters is much more valuable then any of the players gone. So yea once again no “homerism” over here just correct talk.

  512. 512 Cafone said at 3:26 PM on April 30th, 2015:

If you want to use a stats argument, please explain how Cedric Thorton, a UDFA, has been able to put up stats comparable to Cox’s the last two years.

Is Cedric Thorton our second best player?

Do you think Chip Kelly looks at Cox and Thorton and says to himself, “Those 5 more sacks and 4 fewer tackles that Cox has compared to a guy we picked up off the street really make him irreplaceable”

  513. 513 Javi Echie said at 3:35 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Yea lets talk stats if you want to go there. On the surface yes it seems like there isn’t much difference between Cox and Thornton yet if you dig deeper and look at the QB pressure rate with Cox and he was one of tops of the league. So with all the sack we had last year he was responsible for a better portion of them. Thornton gets almost no pressure on the QB.

  514. 514 GEAGLE said at 3:12 PM on April 30th, 2015:

False… We play a 4mam line when we want to pass rush, and cox gets plenty of tackles ca the run for a loss without having to shoot gaps. It’s abaurD. He is a dream fit for the multi front defense we play
    ..
It’s year 3 and people continue this false narrative that we are a 3-4 defense? Lol how much more time until we figure out what defense we really play? Lol

  517. 517 Cafone said at 3:19 PM on April 30th, 2015:

And what is the likelihood that Chip considers Cox his best player now?

It might be best to answer that tomorrow when he is on a plane to Tennessee.

  518. 518 76mustang said at 3:36 PM on April 30th, 2015:

If that were to be the case, then Chip would have determined that the player (MM) and position (QB) were worth the cost (player(s)/pick(s)) to make the deal.

Letting DeSean go didn’t keep the Eagles from being a top 5 offense, and I don’t think he’d be a big difference maker in playoff football.

Trading McCoy for Kiko and then signing DeMarco sure reads like a plus in my estimation.

Maclin was just a product of NFL free agency structure – he bet on himself and won, good for him. I think Chip was right not to overpay for him.

I hope we don’t deal Cox, but if we do, I’m sure there’ll be a plan in place to manage the change.

I hadn’t seen that. That’s great news. I’d love to get Mariota. But, my god, the compensation being floated around is absurd. I’d hate to give up 3 first round picks, Cox and Kendricks. That’s insane. That’s essentially 5 first round picks.
If that is, in fact, what has been offered by Kelly, the titans would be fools to turn that down for a QB that would need 2 years to learn how to be functional in a pro-style offense.

  538. 538 GEAGLE said at 3:31 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  539. 539 Jernst said at 3:43 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I’d be ok with trading Boykin. The team will never give him a chance outside and he’ll leave next year for sure. Plus he didn’t look that great last year. I’d hate to lose Kendricks since the thought of him and Kiko patrolling the middle of the field for the next decade makes me salivate, but I’ve come to grips with the fact that he’s probably not in the teams long term plans. Vinny Curry is one of my favorite players, but again there is a strong possibility that this is his last year in midnight green. I wouldn’t like it, but I’d be able to rationalize or at least stomach the loss of any combination of those three players. Losing Cox would be a bridge too far. Would absolutely hate giving up a stud like him for a lotto ticket, on top of 3 first round pick plus even more compensation.

  549. 549 Honest_T said at 3:22 PM on April 30th, 2015:

First, Chip isn’t doing this on emotion. he has had months to plan his strategy and has a chart with the value of every player on his roster to every team in the NFL. While everyone is chattering about rumors, the leverage slowly shifts in his direction when the Titans are on the clock and are faced with either his package, or “one guy!” whose talent will be wasted on a roster that is a dumpster fire.

The Titans are talking & talking, but in the end they will look like fools if Chip walks away and they are left with nothing!

Chip isn’t dumb, and is even willing to over pay for his guy, but he isn’t going to be extorted. My guess is he is already working another angle.

  553. 553 Honest_T said at 3:31 PM on April 30th, 2015:

You have to think Curry & Boykin are walking next year, so why not use them to get something this year? Cox is a big loss, as is Kendricks, but if you trade them and ken your picks to get their replacements, it is less damaging.

Let’s not forget the opportunity cost though, meaning that trading KK not only costs you the player, but you also spend a #2 on his replacement that could have been used to add elsewhere.

  554. 554 BreakinAnklez said at 3:32 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  616. 616 GermanEagle said at 4:10 PM on April 30th, 2015:

have you ever had a Grolsch Blonde? Well that’s how a Weissbier tastes like. The first three are more Stella type of beers.

  617. 617 ACViking said at 4:12 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Grolsch Blonde . . . yes. First had it in college. Still the best beer I’ve ever drunk.

The Lagers you listed are way way way better than Stella. Of all the great beer made in Belgium, that stuff (Stella) is crap. I do love a nice German Lager though.

  621. 621 GermanEagle said at 5:06 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Yes, of course they are all much better. The comparison was rather related to the Lager draught type of beer. 😉

Finally even got him to admit earlier this year that US beer selection/quality/price simply blows away German beers. Literally maybe one of 3-4 things he has admitted to me that Americans/American businesses do better than Germans although he rants about the PA liquor stores.

That can’t be right. I don’t remember hearing about a “John Reaves” getting inducted into Canton. First round picks are instant HOFers, right?

  641. 641 ACViking said at 4:02 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Reaves did set the NCAA passing-yardage record before leaving UFlorida. So he was, in essence, an instant college HOFer.

Plus, by his own admission, he probably did more drugs than Lawrence Taylor after getting drafted — which also qualifies him as a HOFer. Sort of.

    ..
Allegedky teams like Jets or Bucs want to trade back into the end of round 1 to take Randy Gregory.. We could trade back once to let a team move up for a RB and ten trade back the 2nd time to the beginning of round 2 so the Bucks can get Randy Gregory in round 1.. We get Petty at the beginning of round 2 and have two extra 3rd round picks for trading back

Also — besides Cutler’s 1-year number using up nearly all of TN’s 2015 cap — the Cap Hit to Chicago would put them about $18 million OVER for 2015.

I’d really like to see this bit of financial magic

  689. 689 ACViking said at 4:21 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  695. 695 Greg Richards said at 4:23 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Cutler’s contract didn’t have any signing bonuses initially. He converted $5M of his base salary into a signing bonus and that was prorated over 5 years. If he was traded $4M would accelerate against this year’s cap but his $15.5M salary(which is guaranteed) would go to the Titans so his the net cap savings would be $12.5M for Chicago.

…damnit. When you are right you are right.

    Lol so true.

  730. 730 Patrick said at 4:44 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Not necessarily. It only took Watkins 2 years to fail, but even more impressively we cut Jaiquawn Jarrett after 1 season.

On the other hand, the way Andrew Luck has been playing, the colts could have had players fuck up even more than Watkins/Jarrett and that would still be one of the best draft years they ever had.

You’ll probably have to wait, but for good and for worse, the extremes gives you an answer way, way quicker.

Another historical question and sorry if you’ve hit on this in a previous thread.

Is there any history of a coach coming into the NFL from college and getting the last QB he coached from college? If so, any success?

    Spurrier?

  737. 737 Cafone said at 4:52 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Yeah, that’s the obvious one since Kelly is so often compared to Spurrier by his detractors. He didn’t draft Wuerffel in the first round though. (I think he was probably a FA by the time Washington got him.)

  738. 738 ACViking said at 4:47 PM on April 30th, 2015:

    Quick off-the-top answer . . . (oops)

Vermeil picked up his UCLA QB Jon Sciarra from the Bears — but Sciarra was a veer-option QB who played safety.

However, in his first season with the Birds, Vermeil used Sciarra at the goal line a couple times to run the option. Didn’t work.

That would be truly shocking. No reason at all to allow rampant leaks that Winston is the pick if Mariota is their guy. Doesn’t accompl anything for them.

  762. 762 Greg Richards said at 5:05 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Ed Werder is at the Bucs’ facility and he reported on ESPN that the Bucs are talking with Cleveland about moving up from 34 to 19 to land a targeted pass rusher. If they’re interested in CLE’s pick they might be interested in 20 too. Their 2nd and 3rd would be good return for pick 20. Might have interest in 34 and their 2016 2nd round pick too.

  763. 763 RC5000 said at 5:10 PM on April 30th, 2015:

But I want to open my present tonight!

  767. 767 GEAGLE said at 5:18 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Rather open two extra preasents tomorrow… Take Bryce Petty at the beginning of round 2, and still have a 2nd round pick and three 3rds… bryce won’t get past the bills

  768. 768 Greg Richards said at 5:24 PM on April 30th, 2015:

You’d have a 2nd and two 3rds unless you did another trade.

  769. 769 GEAGLE said at 5:27 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I think you would trade back twice to get all the way out of round 1, Id assume at least. We considered it last years with vikngs but thought we would lose marcus, so turned down our second trade back from #26

  770. 770 Jernst said at 5:06 PM on April 30th, 2015:

What’s the likelihood that a team like the jets trades up to #2 to take one of the defensive studs instead of Mariota? I’d probably guess it’s in the single digits, but you never know there’s definitely a possiblity that one of these teams talking to the Titans is in love w another player and not Mariota as everyone expects.

  771. 771 wee2424 said at 5:07 PM on April 30th, 2015:

What is with your love of average QBs?

I know you’re all about the D, but did you see what Mike Vick did in this offense? Now take that athleticism, and add a great decision maker and passer. That is going to be so much fun to watch!

  776. 776 Javi Echie said at 5:24 PM on April 30th, 2015:

What was so special about what Mike Vick did in this offense? Last time I checked Nick Foles took the job and ran with it and had a historical season yet he wasn’t very athletic.

  777. 777 Honest_T said at 5:29 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Vick couldn’t make the right read, but his athleticism led to points galore, because they didn’t know if he was running, or passing, or handing it off!

Receivers were wide open” the Defenses didn’t know what to do, the offense was as building such big leads our biggest problem was ” how to slow down the Offense and burn clock”.

Foles & Sanchez removed the running aspect entirely, but were better decision makers and passers.

  778. 778 GEAGLE said at 5:30 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  779. 779 Honest_T said at 5:32 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I’d argue we still haven’t seen it. Foles was one dimensional.

  780. 780 GEAGLE said at 5:48 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Excuse me but after you spend more money on the RB position then literally any franchise, I don’t want to hear about how you can’t live without a QB who can run.. Chips offense if you haven’t figures out is built on inside and outside zone plays, NOT zone READ plays… The percentage of zone READ plays we run is the only thing that changes depending on the QB, and when I don’t want to see my franchise QB run all over the place for the 3rd decade in a row of my fandom, excuse me if I don’t care about a zone read play. To act like he can’t live without a run play when he is paying an abaurd amount for running backs is a slap in the face to his genius… If this man is so
dependant one one play then we have to be baboons to let him run the Eagles…

Fortunately whether people want to believe it or not, Chip has proven to only care about decision making and ability to throw the ball, along with character period! Anything else is a bonus to him for QBs. At some point people will have to believe this if his decisions continue to support it

  781. 781 anon said at 5:56 PM on April 30th, 2015:

don’t even get me started on how much we’re paying for rbs in a stacked RB draft. One of the issues is that chips offseason moves were set up to get Mariota and if he can’t get him all that stuff looks a little silly.

  782. 782 GEAGLE said at 6:01 PM on April 30th, 2015:

It’s why I laugh when people justufy losing our best young players by gaining cap space… What good is cap space to chip? He will probably blow it on a 3rd and 4th TE and sign a probowl gunner for like 3mil… Rather have my young talent then give him extra cap space

This! I agree completely. When I saw all the RBs we got in FA and all the money we spent on the position, that was the moment I was sure Chip was moving up for Mariota. No reason to spend all that coin on injury prone RBs in a stacked RB draft if you’re planning on having all your picks.

  785. 785 GEAGLE said at 7:02 PM on April 30th, 2015:

After all the discussion, how ho-hum will it be if the Eagles do nothing of real notice, make no trade of real significance (Boykin doesn’t count), and simply draft Jones at #20?

Yeah the media will get a day or two of yelling about not getting Mariota but the only way the media can continue to milk the insanity that has been Kelly the GM is if they get Mariota. It will be non-stop until the Sixers’ draft in June.

  810. 810 Greg Richards said at 5:27 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Media should offer to funnel Tennessee’s owner a few million to make the trade easier on the Eagles.

  811. 811 Jernst said at 6:16 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Are you kidding? If Tennessee takes Mariota and he inevitably is anything less than rookie of the year/ perennial probowler for them, the Philly media can pump out articles every month for the next 3 years about how Chip is going to trade for Mariota. They won’t have to do any real reporting for the foreseeable future.

  812. 812 Greg Richards said at 5:27 PM on April 30th, 2015:

My thing is if Chip was so hell-bent on getting Mariota whatever the cost then wouldn’t the time to trade Foles have been last offseason coming off his 27-2 season? If if you say well Howie was in charge then, Kelly was still the coach and decides who plays in the games. If you want Mariota, then you start Barkley and all the backups in Game 17 last year and give the Giants the win. Then you’re probably drafting at 16 instead of 20 and the move up is at least slightly easier.

  813. 813 mksp said at 5:30 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I’m still pissed about that Giants game.

  815. 815 Patrick said at 5:47 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  816. 816 Jernst said at 6:04 PM on April 30th, 2015:

If #culture is the most important part of rebuilding the team then you have to embody the “Win the Day” mantra as the head coach to get players to buy in. May not have any effect on players attitudes, but I understand completely why Kelly approaches the game like he does.

  817. 817 Cafone said at 5:31 PM on April 30th, 2015:

You are painting a picture of a GM who knows what he wants and is good maximizing value in order to get it.

Chip Kelly is only one of those things.

  818. 818 GEAGLE said at 5:34 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Unfortunately, I don’t see any proof that could debate your statement, and that’s scary

  819. 819 BobSmith77 said at 5:38 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Kelly pays retail and I think he’ll do it again tonight. Just a question of how high the price will be and if the Eagles will get the same level of butthurt they did in the Bradford deal where Kelly got taken to the cleaners.

  820. 820 GEAGLE said at 5:32 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Losing the Giants game would basically mean we have to pay 1 less first round pick trading up for him.. That loss was literally worth one 1st rounds pick in the Marriota sweepstakes.. I

  821. 821 BobSmith77 said at 5:37 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Yup and still arguably the dumbest thing Kelly has done here as the coach. Served zero purpose.

  822. 822 A_T_G said at 6:08 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Except, you know, we won the game, which is unto itself the “purpose.”

But it is more than that. Do you think players want to play for a team that so discounts the work they put in all season as to tank the last game, while still subjecting them to risk of injury, in the name of possibly moving up a few spots to possibly draft someone who might one day take their job? Do you think Murray would have picked the Eagles seeing they didn’t have enough pride to take down a division rival?

If a coach is putting players at risk on the field, it better be to win. Otherwise, let the organization man up, forfeit, and deal with the consequences. Tanking is for cowards and losers.

  823. 823 Jernst said at 6:37 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Exactly…and although it might not change anything for a player like DeSean, it might have a big impact on a player that lives and dies football (the type of players we’re trying to get). It’s hard to ask a player to sacrifice his own interests for a team (play on a deal that he’s not happy with, play without an extension and financial security, or to play hurt especially if they’re coming up on a contract year) when the head coach doesn’t do the same thing. Got to embody the traits and culture you want in your team as the Head Coach.

  824. 824 Ark87 said at 7:17 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Totally agree ATG. You can flush the “win the day” mantra if you go the NBA route.

On a more philosophical level, I think we’ve begun to warp our fundamental outlook on sports once we start talking about strategically losing games for the sake of some meta-game ultimate goal. We’ve placed winning the super bowl so high up on a pedestal we’ve sort of lost sight of the fact that the superbowl is a bonus indulgence of entertainingly crowning someone the best team as a service to the sport in general, not the purpose of the sport. If you let those thing get switched up it severely damages the sport. If we don’t value a good hard-fought victory over a hated rival (to complete the sweep) just because it doesn’t marginally increase the odds of the team winning a super bowl in following years, we’ve lost perspective of why we watch football.

I can watch a game with no stakes (no football game has any real stakes, those are all made up and embraced as real), I can’t enjoy a football game played half-heartedly.

  825. 825 Jernst said at 6:03 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I’m not totally sure the difference between 20 and 17 or wherever we would have picked is the difference between an extra 1st round pick. Probably more the difference between an extra 3rd round pick. But, if Chip’s really prepared to give up 3 first round picks, Cox and Kendricks (plus essentially the 2nd he gave up for Bradford), then is an extra 3rd really gonna stop him.

Bottomline, at this point…only one thing will determine if Mariota will be an Eagle. If the Titans aren’t sold on Mariota and want to trade the pick, the Eagles will make the best offer. If they love Mariota, it doesn’t matter where our first round pick is this year, they were gonna take him anyways.

  826. 826 anon said at 5:34 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I don’t think he was hell bent until he saw the play this year.

  827. 827 Jernst said at 5:57 PM on April 30th, 2015:

This! If Foles repeats his 27-2 esque performance than Mariota is moot and we can focus on improving the rest of the team. And, despite being hell bent on getting Mariota I think Chip is even more hell bent on winning at all costs and adhering to his win the day mantra. If you’re number one desire is to instill a culture of “Win the Day!” and win at all costs and focus on the day at hand, you need to embody that from the top down. Can’t expect players to buy into that culture and not adhere to it yourself as the head coach.

  849. 849 Jernst said at 6:53 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Let’s just get crazy and assume Chip has talked to teams like the Jets to find out what it would take to move up to six and can work out a trade with Tampa that would give them the necessary compensation to move back up to 6, while still getting even more picks and could still end up with Winston since Tennessee and the other teams in the top 5 might not be comfortable with his character concerns.

  850. 850 Jernst said at 6:51 PM on April 30th, 2015:

That’s interesting for a few reasons, but the thing that I find most interesting about it is that no one has considered what would happen if Winston didn’t go first overall to Tampa.

A couple of us were talking yesterday about how weird it is that Winston has gotten such a free pass from all his red flags. I mean the guy has more red flags than a Chinese Communist New Years Parade and threw 18 INTs in a relatively short college season. It seems crazy that it’s such a foregone conclusion that he’s the consensus number 1 pick.

If he didn’t go number 1 overall, how far would he fall. With so many teams certain that Tampa would take him, have they done the extensive background work to clear all his red flags…enough to make him the face of the franchise? He could, in all honesty, tumble down the draft board if we trade up to #1. Tampa could conceivably still get Winston after trading back if he falls down the draft.

Maybe this is why Tampa has been so eager to spread the rumor that they’d take Winston. It keeps other teams from doing the work necessary to clear his issues and might allow them to move back, get some extra compensation to mitigate the character risk they are taking on and still get there man.

    Just a thought…

  851. 851 ACViking said at 7:03 PM on April 30th, 2015:

This very possibility — in light of Tampa’s continued silence about the identity of their 1st pick and the seeming lack of equal due diligence by any other team — was kicked around earlier today.

For example, maybe the Jets want to move up to No. 1 for Dante Fowler. Tampa could slide back to the 6-spot and, presumably, still get Winston — because no else seems to want him.

The wrinkle could be TN. Do the Titans like Winston more than anyone else on their board . . . and more than ZMet?

But it does seem to the public that no team besides Tampa is especially interested in Winston.

if the Bucs and Titans don’t pick Marriota, the draft becomes really interesting, because we aren’t prepared for THOSE scenarios… Only rumors we hear are involving going up to #2… We may find much more reasonable partners if Marriota falls a few spots, especially if a team actually likes a player they can get around #20 like MELVIN Gordon.l.
    ..

As frenzies go this MM chatter has been a grand imam. I am astonished that so many comments seem to be conceding that Kelly has already given away the store to have his way. Is this a case of “everyone believes it so it must be true?” Or are the billion or so unattributed, unsubstantiated, unconfirmed mentions by “journalists” enough to generate an immutable momentum? If I am to remain a fan of Chip Kelly, here is what must not happen: 1)He must not attempt to meet the HUGE demands of any GM in order to move up to draft MM; 2) He must not mortgage the future as he said he would not; and 3) If he trades away ANY starters, he should not expect a pat on the back unless he acquires superior replacements.

  863. 863 Jernst said at 6:43 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Before the offseason…in fact, all the way back to the last game of the season, people assumed Chip was in love with Mariota and would make a strong push for him. Most of the moves so far have made perfect sense if the final outcome ended up with us getting Mariota. It’s clear that Chip absolutely loves the kid and thinks he’s an ideal QB for his system. QB is the most important position in the entire sport and the Eagles are nowhere near set or even comfortable at that spot. Then, these guys (all of which I might add called this a pipe-dream months ago) have come around to thinking it’s more than likely with all the whispers and info that they are hearing. I think there’s more than enough smoke at this point to assume the fire isn’t just a self-fulfilling prophecy because people want to believe in it so badly.

  864. 864 unhinged said at 7:27 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I think you have explained the rationale of the masses who digest and regurgitate the storyline, but I also think it is convenient to say that most of Kelly’s moves thus far perfectly fit that storyline. Why pay a ransom for SB when MM is your target? The fact that Kelly loves MM is not lost on me, but I don’t think ANY thing that he has done so far would explain a gutting of the defense or a mortgaging of the future. There seems to be widespread belief that Kelly will be reckless and ruthless to get what he wants, and to me, that is all in the minds of on-lookers and not in the actions of the coach (yet).

  865. 865 Cafone said at 7:00 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I’m not in that camp. I believe the coach when he states his high opinion of Bradford and I really find the reaction of so many fans – that Bradford is NOT the answer – to be premature. I was okay w/the Shady money dump – it liberated some capital to go toward Shady’s replacements and DB’s. I don’t share your view that his moves have been horrible, but I may yet be convinced if these MM delusions become reality.

I really can’t grasp the concept of loving Marcus Marriota as a franchise QB so much that you would spend the #2 pick on him, yet be willing to trade him.. I don’t understand how both can be true, so one has to be a lie…

  934. 934 Greg Richards said at 7:36 PM on April 30th, 2015:

You could think that Mariota has a strong chance to be a franchise QB but nothing is a lock and taking the Eagles’ massive pick/player package is a better bet on the risk/reward scale than drafting Mariota.

  935. 935 GEAGLE said at 7:37 PM on April 30th, 2015:

If a QB is so valuable that we should trade half our defense..then he is THAT valuabe to the Titans too. I don’t believethat Marriota to them is better then Mettenberger and Leonard. I need to see it to believe it… Please call tbeir bluff

The current reports say that if Tennessee doesn’t work out a trade, the feeling in the draft room is that they’ll be content to sit at 2 and take Mariota. Really? Does that sound right to anyone else? How do you take a QB #2 overall to be the face of your franchise. Putting your eggs in his basket for the foreseeable future, that you’re “content” or “ok” with or whatever other luke warm adjective you put on it? I just don’t believe that the Titans really want Mariota.
