Eagles-Packer Preview

Posted: August 29th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 626 Comments »

The third preseason game used to be crucial. Starters played into the third quarter. Coaches wanted to see their starters play a lot of reps. They wanted to get the players accustomed to getting back on the field after halftime. There still wasn’t much in the way of gameplanning or preparation, but the game was taken more seriously than others.

This year feels different.

Aaron Rodgers isn’t playing. Only a couple of starting O-linemen are scheduled to play. Other starters will be missing from the lineup. And as for the Eagles?

Last year Chip Kelly had the starters play the first half in the third preseason game so this may not be much of a change for them. It does seem that other teams around the NFL are nervous due to some of the key injuries that we’ve seen this summer.

This is an important game for the Eagles starters. They have played well in the first two weeks, but those were home games. Playing in Lambeau will be more of a challenge. And the Eagles haven’t faced any challenges so far. The Colts and Ravens were very sloppy (penalties, turnovers). You can give the Eagles credit for some of that, but those teams just didn’t play well.

The Packers are 1-1, with a solid win over the Patriots and a tough loss to the Steelers. This should be a more challenging game. I don’t want to make it seem like an Eagles win guarantees a trip to the Super Bowl. I just think it is important to see how the team plays in a tougher situation. How good is this team?

Let’s now talk about some players and positions of interest.

* Kiko Alonso – We finally get to see him play in an Eagles uniform. The Eagles defense has been impressive so far this summer and that’s without the Big 3 at ILB.

* Sam Bradford – He was on the field for a handful of snaps last week. The rust is gone. Bradford should see extended time tonight. It will be good to see how he plays. Does he have good timing with the receivers? Does he stay comfortable in the pocket? I would love to see him hit a WR with a deep ball for a big play. That was missing from the offense for a lot of last year.

* Eric Rowe – The Eagles wanted him to focus on playing outside, but then JaCorey Shepherd got hurt. The team is high enough on Rowe that they are giving him a chance to win the Nickelback job. Rowe is effective when he gets his hands on a receiver. He is less effective when playing off and having to react to the moves a receiver makes.

* Walter Thurmond – So far, so good in his bid to be the Eagles FS. Thurmond will play against a good offense, even without Rodgers and Jordy Nelson. This should be a good test for him. I would love to see Thurmond have to tackle a RB in space. His ability to hit/tackle is my one concern.

* Josh Huff – He has played well this summer, but only has one catch so far in the preseason. It would be nice to see him get the ball in his hands a few more times.

* Kenjon Barner – Is there any way he does it three weeks in a row? Barner leads the NFL with 225 punt return yards and 2 TDs.

* Backup Safety – We know the top four guys as of now (Jenkins, Thurmond, Maragos, Prosinski). Will there be a fifth Safety? Ed Reynolds made plays in the opener. Jerome Couplin flashed physicality and downhill ability last week. One of them needs to step up. It would be good to see Couplin more in coverage. As for Reynolds, I would love to see him play the run aggressively.

* John Moffitt – A good story for a while, but Moffitt must play better to feel better about his hopes of winning a roster spot. He won’t play as much this week, but any time on the field is crucial.

* E.J. Biggers – If Rowe doesn’t win the Nickel spot, Biggers will. He has played well so far and needs to keep that up.

* Third QB – Matt Barkley has played ahead of Tim Tebow so far. Will that continue tonight? Both players were up and down last week. It would be nice if one of them took a step forward and showed they deserve the job.

* G.J. Kinne – Somebody get this guy the ball. Please.

I’m starting to move away from the assumption that Prosinski will make it. Yes, he’s a core STer but Reynolds did well there Week 1 and Couplin was in on all 4 STs phases last week. They may not be quite as good as Prosinski on STs but if they are still better than average in that respect then I personally would keep either over Prosinski due to their relative upside.

  2. 2 GEAGLE said at 5:18 PM on August 29th, 2015:

No way do I see us cutting Prosinski.
    ,,
I have the 4 safeties as a Lock, Thurmond, Jenk, Maragos and Prosinski, with #5 safety spot being disputed between Reynolds vs, Couplin. no reason to keep both, the loser might even end up on our Practice squad.
    .,
reynolds is ahead right now. made plays on Defense while also making sure to make key Blocks on Barner punt return along with some big ST tackles.. Couplin did well last week, but IMO Reynolds has to have a bad game for Couplin to be able to catch up… If Reynolds shows up again in these next two games, that #5 safety spot is all his…… In which case, hopefully we can get Couplin back in the practice Squad,..
    .l
Prosinski is one of our top 5 ST players, no way chip cuts him as far as im concerned, but we’ll see soon emough
    ..
We didn’t build an elite ST by cutting the Prosinski, and Tutu types… Enjoy having an elite ST? Then have to understand when chip puts so much emphasis on ST when choosing our roster

  3. 3 Greg Richards said at 5:27 PM on August 29th, 2015:

It’s just one game but I think Couplin brings certain size/speed characteristics that the other guys don’t that are worth keeping on the team to develop.

  4. 4 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 5:37 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Agreed. We need back ups who can actually play the position and we need to start developing some young players in the secondary

  5. 5 GEAGLE said at 7:54 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Couplins 2 or 3 extra iinches in height won’t save him,.. He can either outplay Reynolds, which hasn’t happened yet, or we will be hoping to get him back on the Practice squad… it’s either Couplin or Reynolds, doubt Both, because Chip ISNT going to cut the 3rd or 4th best ST player on our team which happens to be Prosinski,…
    ….
I think Reynolds has to have a rough game to give Couplin a chance to keep up, if Reynolds keeps showing up the way he has, I assume the 5th safety spot is his. Kid keeps making plays on Defense and ST, I have a hard time seeing chip cut him… But we’ll see.

I think we’ll be fine going 5 WRs this year especially if we’re going to run the ball more with our 2 stud RBs.

  13. 13 jpate said at 6:11 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Good for Vick. The response from the Pittsburgh fans is ridiculous they have a guy who’s accused of raping women playing starting QB but they are in uproar about a back up QB who’s paid his debt.

  14. 14 Greg Richards said at 6:15 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I realize Vick served his time but the difference is Vick was found guilty of his crimes where Roethlisberger never was.

  15. 15 jpate said at 6:19 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I know that’s why I said accused (twice) but my point is it’s seems pretty self righteous they can’t give a man a second chance when he’s earned it but people are entitled to their opinion.

A lot of casualties so far in this early game for the Bills…

  17. 17 Greg Richards said at 4:57 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Raiders waived S Jonathan Dowling who has reportedly looked real good in camp. Unfortunately, it’s reportedly due to “maturity issues” so it sounds like he did something screwed up. Too bad as he’d be a nice fit.

  18. 18 GEAGLE said at 5:14 PM on August 29th, 2015:

One of my favorite safety prospects.. 6’3 with 4.5 speed… But why you get cut by Raiders for “Maturity issues” doesn’t exactly scream Eagles culture… Damn shame, I was a big fan of the kid from Western Kentucky,,,

I don’t believe it…. THAT WOULD be the SMART MOVE, which means I don’t believe Dan Synder has the Balls, nor the Brains to allow them to cut RG3 even tho it’s prob what the GM! Coach and OL wants…. RG3 realistically is going to add NOTHING OF VALUE to that sess pool of a team, so the smart move is to cut out the Cancer, cut your losses and admit that the trade was Boderline Retarded…. But I’m counting on Dan Snyder to screw it up, continue to have RG3 back after picking up the 5th year option recently…

I will CRY if they cut RG3 before weak 1, I soooo look forward to their TRAINWRECK season..

It must be horrible feeling to be two weeks before the start of the seasn and your team is already a disaster….that’s special type of Dysfunctipn right there

  27. 27 Gary Barnes said at 5:44 PM on August 29th, 2015:

The cancer in Washington goes way beyond RGIII…Snyder needs to look in the mirror as he is the major problem. Gruden has also been a horrible head coach so far. As an Eagles fan, I hope Snyder never leaves; having him and Jerry in the same division has been a beautiful thing for a long time. Unfortunately, Jerry is being edged out from football decisions by his son and the Cowboys have made some better choices recently – still wish they had taken Johnny Football. What is the cap hit to cut RGIII this year? .

  28. 28 FairOaks said at 6:23 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Was going to say myself, the biggest cancer is Snyder, and that isn’t going to get removed anytime soon. Hopefully he can continue to mess up whatever the next situation is. (Would be hysterical to see them actually cut him, RGIII gets his humble pie, and goes on to have a respectable career with an AFC team…)

  29. 29 JoeBlow said at 5:29 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Bills players are going down left and right in this game, something about playing the Steelers in preseason….GB had same issue last week

  30. 30 GEAGLE said at 5:36 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Tonight is dissapointing. defense will be all jacked up after beng embarressed last time where in Lambeau, come out, ready to fly around make plays tonignt and what? Beat up on a bunch of Backups? For who? For what?… Might as well sit key starters like the starting DL, Jenkins, Thurmond, Maxwell, Nolan, Barwin… If you want to give players who need work like Curry at OLB, ROWE at Nickel some snaps, that I understand,,. But why risk our front 7 against a backüp OL of GB? Their OL doesn’t even have depth, we will kill tbeir backups, what’s the point of risking injury if we aren’t going to get work in against adequate competition?

  40. 40 TypicalDouche said at 6:23 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  41. 41 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 6:28 PM on August 29th, 2015:

What do think you coaches are making roster decisions based on?

I’m not saying he’s going to lead the Bills into the playoffs or anything; just that he has been looking good. Unlike our 3rd stringers….

  42. 42 TypicalDouche said at 6:53 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Barkley and Tebow look that bad as 3rd stringers? Damnnnn where is Peyton to be the 3rd string QB when you need him. Why didn’t we sign Mike Vick he looks like a legend right now.

  43. 43 wee2424 said at 7:04 PM on August 29th, 2015:

You are taking what he is saying and completely manipulating it. What he is saying is that pre season is instrumental in the evaluation of depth players and assists in making the back end of the roster stronger. TT has looked better then our 3rd string counterparts.

  44. 44 wee2424 said at 6:48 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Pre season is the biggest deciding factor for depth or roster bubble guys. I think you are putting to little emphasis on it. This is after all why there are 4 pre season games.

  45. 45 TypicalDouche said at 6:51 PM on August 29th, 2015:

thanks for the definition of preseason. Yes there’s 4 games that players and coaches want to cut back so yea preseason doesn’t mean as much as you make it seem.

  46. 46 wee2424 said at 6:58 PM on August 29th, 2015:

So it doesn’t mean alot in terms of evaluating depth players?

  47. 47 FairOaks said at 6:52 PM on August 29th, 2015:

There are four preseason games because the owners get full payment from season ticket holders for them.

There actually used to be six preseason games, with 14 in the regular season. They switched two over to regular season. (And have been talking about switching two more, but that is probably excessively long.)

  48. 48 wee2424 said at 7:01 PM on August 29th, 2015:

You are correct in that. However my point is that pre season is crucial in evaluating depth players.

  49. 49 FairOaks said at 7:15 PM on August 29th, 2015:

If they have played past years, coaches have a pretty good idea what they can do. You’d be looking to see if they improved in specific areas, etc. For UDFAs or other bubble players where the coaches haven’t seen them up close, sure it’s the best they have. That is usually just a few spots on the roster though. There are many many players who have looked great against 2nd or 3rd stringers in preseason which really weren’t NFL caliber players. It’s possible the other team is mostly set on the roster and the opponents aren’t playing as hard, or they really weren’t that good, etc.

  50. 50 wee2424 said at 8:22 PM on August 29th, 2015:

As far as the veteran comment, that is not always true. Every year on multiple teams lower end veterans battle lower end veterans for starting jobs during the preseason. Jobs are annually won that way. On other teams there are annually starting QB jobs that are won during pre season. Texans for instance.

Good depth is needed in the NFL simply due to injuries or positions on a team that are very thin. If a player goes down you may be forced to decide between the best of the worst.

It also helps in deciding who may not be currently ready to play but who has potential and is worth keeping around. Practice squad.

Let’s use examples on our current roster in which pre season has been big so far.

OL- Currently thin. If a player goes down we do not have good options so pre season helps determine who is the best option if a starter is lost.

    Barner versus Mostert.

Slot CB- That is a position that is currently up for grabs. Pre season is currently huge in deciding who is taking that job. This is very big because whoever wins that job is going to be playing around 40% of the defensive snaps.

Who is worth keeping on the roster due to their ST play? Barner comes to mind which goes back to Mostert versus Barner. Without pre season Barner would not be a thought to make this team.

Knocking the rust off of Bradford who hasn’t seen game action in over a year and a half untill last week.

When I say player evaluation I don’t just mean cutting or keeping fringe players. That is included of course, but also assigning starting roles (I count nickel CB as a starter) or next in line players.

Burton likely would not have made the team if it weren’t for pre season last year.

  51. 51 Dan in Philly said at 5:48 PM on August 29th, 2015:

What makes Tom Brady so good is his ability to make decisions with tempo. If Bradford can just run the offense with tempo, he’ll be fine. That’s what I’m hoping for. Last week he looked ok, but can he run the offense with tempo?

I don’t give a shit if it’s preseason, you have a poor defense, THATS trying to build itself, backüp and thats how you show up against a,group of Scab QBs from Buffalo? I don’t care what defenders were on the field, have some damn pride instead of making 3 bum QBs look like the second coming of jim kelly..
    ..
LOL wonder what the Bills would say if the Skins offered them RG3 for EJ Manuel? Lol Skins might not even be able to get Geno Smith and his broken jaw for RG3,… Doubt you could get a 7th round pick for a garbage QB on a 1st round contract who can’t help himself from throwing his OL under the bus

Every now and then he devolves to petty name-calling… best to just ignore those. He’s very optimistic and has been wrong with some predictions… like most of us.

  248. 248 shah8 said at 8:43 PM on August 29th, 2015:

well, remember that Mark Sanchez was pretty darn slick himself in the preseason.

But it’s hard not to be optimistic.

Have generally thought this will be a down season, because I suspect that chip might have a toxic atmosphere that will eventually bring team down. Does look pretty good, but I’ll wait until about the middle of the second game…

  249. 249 mksp said at 8:48 PM on August 29th, 2015:

The nature is that we won’t know until we know.

  251. 251 FairOaks said at 8:52 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Frankly, most of the complaints have seemed more like sour grapes, or more accurately disappointment they were no longer here and trying to rationalize it. Other than maybe Evan Mathis (how else to explain that decision), not sure anyone has exactly been *happy* to leave though some have still ended up in good situations.

I don’t think atmosphere is a problem at all, especially if they win.

Mark Sanchez was nothing like this. It will be much harder in real games, but teams will need to prepare well. Or get lucky with turnovers. Our D is still an open question — they haven’t spent too much time on the field yet — but it should at least be better.

  252. 252 stephenstempo said at 10:33 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  254. 254 FairOaks said at 8:46 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  327. 327 Ark87 said at 9:12 PM on August 29th, 2015:

D3FB was pretty bullish on him. The physical talent is obvious, and he’s doing pretty well against the starters.

  328. 328 Jarock said at 9:12 PM on August 29th, 2015:

D3FB wanted us to trade up in the 1st round for him. Talented kid, but the NFL wasn’t quite so high on him.

  329. 329 mksp said at 9:14 PM on August 29th, 2015:

There was a small group of us that liked his talent.

Value is above our pay grade.

But the kid can be an NFL QB.

  330. 330 GEAGLE said at 9:09 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  331. 331 Corry said at 9:09 PM on August 29th, 2015:

So is Ced Thornton’s pass rush improved or is it because the Pack is missing a lot of starters on the OLine?

  332. 332 GEAGLE said at 9:10 PM on August 29th, 2015:

SWAMP said THATS what he would be working on this offseason… We’ll see…. Color me encouraged

  333. 333 Jarock said at 9:10 PM on August 29th, 2015:

    Voting O-Line. Ced’s a prototype 2-gap DL, but a pass rusher, he ain’t.

  335. 335 FairOaks said at 9:11 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  336. 336 Jarock said at 9:12 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Little harsh on the kid there. He’s still learning and that wasn’t a drastic hold of the ball.

  337. 337 GEAGLE said at 9:11 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Alright, I’m having fun And all, but enough,. Pull the plug on our key defenders, get the starting corners, thurmond and our starting DL out of the game please

Les Bowen is tweeting one negative has been our pass rush. Some other dude replied sayign I told you all this would be an issue.
Uh… we have had a ton of pressure on Hundley all night. Problem is that hes been excellent at moving around and extending the play.

  339. 339 Greg Richards said at 9:14 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Pass rush is one of the things you can’t really tell from preseason.

  340. 340 FairOaks said at 9:18 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I hope so. Some plays it’s been good but some plays the other QB does have lots of time. Well, given he’s fairly mobile. That was a concern of mine after losing Cole but the proof will be in the regular season. Maybe getting Curry on the field more will help there.

  341. 341 Jarock said at 9:20 PM on August 29th, 2015:

One ‘problem’ with the 2-gap scheme. Never going to get the consistent pressure you see out of a 1-gap scheme unless you have truly exceptional OLB’s.

    Nice play Mathews

  350. 350 Ark87 said at 9:15 PM on August 29th, 2015:

2 guys have him dead to rights behind the line, came away with some nice yardage

Only Shamchex can throw short of the sticks on a 3rd and 2. And it was incomplete. Luckily we got the penalty to keep the drive alive.

  358. 358 Corry said at 9:21 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I’m going to screw that up all season long.

  359. 359 Jarock said at 9:19 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I’ve seen enough Mark Sanchez. He ain’t getting any better. Let’s see if Barkley can do anything with better players around him. Heck, if you think Tebow can actually make the team, wouldn’t mind seeing him either.

  360. 360 HazletonEagle said at 9:20 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Maehl risked his life for that TD.

  361. 361 Greg Richards said at 9:20 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I think he may actually be a better WR than Ajirotutu.

  362. 362 Jarock said at 9:22 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Agreed. Tutu makes it only because of his ST value. Trade off.

  363. 363 Jarock said at 9:21 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Needs to if he expects to have any prayer of making the team. Stacked above him.

  364. 364 GEAGLE said at 9:20 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Jeff Maehl has been getting open all day,,,, he will land on someone’s roster,,, I wouldn’t be completely against keeping MAEHL over Austin

  365. 365 Daz said at 9:20 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Stuck with the GB commentary – hilarious how much they are complaining about tempo of the game and how tired their Defense is already…

  366. 366 GEAGLE said at 9:22 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Tired? WTF? It was only taking our offense like 4 plays to score,.. bradford threw 11 passes on 3 TD drives lol, what do they have to be tired about?

    Tell me about it

  374. 374 GEAGLE said at 9:24 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I’m just going to bet like $500 on every chip kelly PS game, our backups are better trained then everyone and we have more QB depth then most… Betting on the eagles in preseason is brilliant… I have to start, and I don’t even like to gamble

  375. 375 Ark87 said at 9:22 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I really wish Sanchez would hit a few passes further than 5 yards down field, he really needs to get better seeing and hitting those targets downfield. Scary thing is that the dink and dunk is working lol.

  376. 376 Lewwyn said at 9:22 PM on August 29th, 2015:

    Everything is working.

  377. 377 HazletonEagle said at 9:23 PM on August 29th, 2015:

it worked his first few games of last year too. And people were fooled in to thinking he was good. But then teams got the book on him. Realized they only had to defend a 15×30 yard box right in the center of the field. And we were dead to rights.

No surprise it works in preseason when teams arent worried about studying his tendencies.

But yeah,, that whole TD drive was dump offs to RBs in the flats.

  378. 378 Jarock said at 9:26 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  385. 385 Jarock said at 9:30 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  386. 386 Jarock said at 9:32 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Depends some on what you ask of them too. Pure man you can either play or not to an extent. Technique makes a difference but you either have the speed/hips or you don’t.

  427. 427 GEAGLE said at 9:38 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Unfortunately I think tutu and Austin are both Locks, and chip is giving MAEHL all this opportunity today to get him a next job with someone else

  430. 430 HazletonEagle said at 9:40 PM on August 29th, 2015:

credit Chip Kelly for giving Sanchez all bread and butter on that drive. Screen, 2 yard pass in the middle to Austin, screen to Maehl, short pass in middle of the field to Burton for the score.

  431. 431 Greg Richards said at 9:40 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Burton with 2 TDs. Trade Zach Ertz! Yeah, no.

  432. 432 Jarock said at 9:41 PM on August 29th, 2015:

A good half for Nick Foles: 10 of 11 for 128 yards and 1 TD. Passer rating of 145.5.

    He’s sucked compared to Bradford.

These preseason games are funny, we played 3 contenders so far and it’s like what have you guys been doing all summer? Just because talking heads have crowned you doesn’t mean it’s going to magically come true. It’s good to see the Eagles so focused throughout the whole process.

  458. 458 Jarock said at 9:52 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Noticed as I was watching the running game, GB has been leaving the backside wide open all night. Neither of our top 2 QBs can really take advantage of that though. Need some more constraint plays.

  459. 459 Insomniac said at 9:53 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  460. 460 Jarock said at 9:54 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  491. 491 Corry said at 10:05 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Reynolds just got shoved back and almost let his man block the punt.

  492. 492 BobSmith77 said at 10:05 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Normally I give two craps about what a team does in preseason but even I have to admit that was pretty impressive in the 1st half.

  493. 493 Jarock said at 10:06 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Hard to not be impressed. Can’t remember the Eagles ever looking anywhere close to this good in the preseason.

  494. 494 BobSmith77 said at 10:08 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I almost get the impression that Kelly was out to make a point there in the 1st half too. Wasn’t the same passive, vanilla scheme nor did they let up on offense a bit.

  495. 495 HazletonEagle said at 10:06 PM on August 29th, 2015:

the team has dominated Indianapolis, Baltimore, and now Green Bay. I dont care if its pre-season. Thats good.

    HART!

  497. 497 Ark87 said at 10:08 PM on August 29th, 2015:

and the first 3 and out belongs to Matt Barkley. Not too surprised. Sanchez, Barkley, Tebow: haven’t seen a lick of improvement from any of them. Going to bring in some fresh bodies next year I think.

  499. 499 HazletonEagle said at 10:09 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Reynolds dragged and falls off the tackle. Considine style.

  500. 500 BobSmith77 said at 10:11 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Yeah although it wasn’t the patented Considine ‘tackle the legs on a bad angle and get bounced off instantly’

  501. 501 Jarock said at 10:09 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Now that was some truly awful attempts at tackling.

  502. 502 Greg Richards said at 10:11 PM on August 29th, 2015:

When you don’t tackle to the ground in any of the training camp practices, you’re going to struggle with form when you do it in games. Hopefully, they improve. In general, tackling hasn’t been an issue past 2 years like it was under Reid.

  503. 503 Jarock said at 10:12 PM on August 29th, 2015:

True. From what I’ve read, they practice getting good position on tackles consistently. They definitely helped Nate’s tackling. Too bad they couldn’t fix his propensity for biting on fakes.

  504. 504 Corry said at 10:10 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I was really hoping Reynolds would build off his week 1 performance…yech…

  506. 506 Corry said at 10:16 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  511. 511 Jarock said at 10:15 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  514. 514 Jarock said at 10:16 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Why I wanted to see Barkley or Tebow with the better players.

  515. 515 HazletonEagle said at 10:17 PM on August 29th, 2015:

well, you at least know he made those 2 nice throws. Better than any throw Sanchez made tonight.

  516. 516 Jarock said at 10:18 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Exactly. Two great throws with nothing to show for it. Most fans will just see the box and chant ‘Barkley sucks.’

  517. 517 Greg Richards said at 10:20 PM on August 29th, 2015:

    Barkley sucks

  518. 518 Jarock said at 10:20 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  519. 519 Jarock said at 10:21 PM on August 29th, 2015:

He ain’t great, but he’s not truly awful either. Way better than some of the guys we’ve had as a backup.

  520. 520 Jarock said at 10:21 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Ain’t convinced he’s that much worse than Sanchez either.

  521. 521 HazletonEagle said at 10:16 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Barkely gets flustered by pressure. He steps up and avoids it, but never gets rid of the ball after his initial avoidance. Must have his eyes closed or something being scared.

  522. 522 Jarock said at 10:17 PM on August 29th, 2015:

And even on that made tackle by Watkins, you could see he really didn’t want to hit the guy. C’mon Jaylen.

  529. 529 JoeBlow said at 10:24 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Hundley is playing a really good game

  530. 530 Greg Richards said at 10:25 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Reserve secondary getting picked apart. We need one more solid CB or S(so Jenkins or Thurmond can cover slot).

  531. 531 Jarock said at 10:26 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Secondary depth hasn’t looked good this game at all. Too many receivers running open down the field.

  532. 532 Greg Richards said at 10:27 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Yeah, not good. I know these guys are still fighting for jobs/roles but I’d think it may be hard to keep the mental intensity up when your team is up so by many points early.

  533. 533 Jarock said at 10:25 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Bang bang, nothing Najee did wrong, but it’s a legit penalty.

  535. 535 HazletonEagle said at 10:27 PM on August 29th, 2015:

The only thing Rowe does well is strip the ball out. Otherwise, hes a disaster. He might have some potential But hes really really scary. Like Huff last year.

  536. 536 Greg Richards said at 10:28 PM on August 29th, 2015:

He’s a rookie in his 3rd preseason game. Simmer down.

  537. 537 JoeBlow said at 10:28 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  538. 538 HazletonEagle said at 10:29 PM on August 29th, 2015:

dudes, hes in line for a ton of playing time THIS season. a good performance next pre-season isnt going to save us.

  539. 539 Greg Richards said at 10:30 PM on August 29th, 2015:

I’d be willing to bet they stay in base in passing situations a lot this year with Jenkins or Thurmond dropping down to cover the slot. The range of Alonso and Kendricks will help in coverage.

  540. 540 HazletonEagle said at 10:31 PM on August 29th, 2015:

yeah. probably. unfortunately, theres nothing better behind him either. I kinda think we might need to make a trade for someone worthwhile.

  541. 541 Jarock said at 10:35 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Probably true, but neither of them is as good as Boykin. The double clutch and grab by Jenkins, who by all reports has been the best in the slot of all the Eagles defenders, was particularly embarrassing.

  542. 542 Septhinox said at 10:39 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Boykin sucked last year and will be exposed in Pitt.

  543. 543 Jarock said at 10:43 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Starting to think you assume every ex-eagle sucks. Dude, Boykin balled the last two years. Foles just had his best preseason game with the Rams in the most important preseason games. Are either of them superstars? Doubt it, but neither sucks either.

  544. 544 Ark87 said at 11:06 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Boykin didn’t have a lot of picks last year. But he graded out as one of the top nickle CB’s last season. Didn’t give up a lot of throws, most of the ones he did give up were “wins”, the ones you’re happy to trade for a loss of down

  545. 545 Septhinox said at 11:23 PM on August 29th, 2015:

No, he was good in 2013. Not 2014.

  546. 546 Ark87 said at 12:11 AM on August 30th, 2015:

He had a lot of picks in 2013 and player very well. 2014 he had a very good year as well, he was only down in picks. We lived in the nickel and he held his guy down. He was top 5 Cb (period) in every advanced category, run and pass. He tackled, he covered, and rarely let a WR catch a ball and get more than 45% of the required yards on 1st down, 60% of the required yards on second down or 100% of the required yards on third down. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/player/29562/brandon-boykin

  547. 547 mksp said at 10:29 PM on August 29th, 2015:

    He’ll be okay.

Rowe doesn’t have any physical shortcomings. Needs to get the mental side down. Game a bit too fast for him right now.

But yeah, rough game for him.

  563. 563 Greg Richards said at 10:40 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  575. 575 Jarock said at 10:47 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Great ‘help’ there by Prosinksy. Annnd . . . Biggars showing his true colors. Ugh, not impressed by the secondary depth, which the coaching staff bragged about all summer.

  576. 576 Septhinox said at 10:48 PM on August 29th, 2015:

It depends on the people he is playing with. If he’s expecting help and not getting it, not really his fault. Can’t really judge when people are playing with people who will be substitute teachers in 2 weeks.

  577. 577 Jarock said at 10:51 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Completely missed his jam. Getting outrun is forgivable, but no jam or even an attempt is an issue. Prosinsky probably makes the team, just because he’s a great ST player. Anyone gets hurt and it’s very possible you’ll see both on the field.

Billy Davis defense has managed to make pretty much every secondary player look bad tonight and historically. I agree that we could use more talent, but I’m still not sold on Billy’s defense.

  578. 578 JoeBlow said at 10:54 PM on August 29th, 2015:

  599. 599 Iskar36 said at 10:59 PM on August 29th, 2015:

You have to wonder of you really can give Tebow credit for being the better QB when it comes to the read option when he struggles with the handoff. That’s two fumbles where he looked like he was going to keep it on a read option this preseason. I’m just not seeing the benefit of keeping him.

  600. 600 Jarock said at 11:01 PM on August 29th, 2015:

    What happened?

  603. 603 Ark87 said at 11:04 PM on August 29th, 2015:

just lofted it up there, no one around, one of our guys looked like he couldn’t believe it was happening, back pedaled about 5 or so yards and fell back with the int. Seemed like it all happened in slow motion.

  604. 604 Avery Greene said at 11:05 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Is Biggers playing himself off the team?

  605. 605 Jarock said at 11:08 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Possible. He still looks like the 2nd best choice to me at nickel. Rowe’s been bad, Watkins can’t tackle. Biggars has at least been decent in both coverage and tackling. Reverted to his Washington days on a couple plays both getting beat deep and panicking on a play he actually had good coverage on. If Watkins can’t show a little more willingness to hit, I could see Biggars beating him out and possibly even moving to starting nickel.

  606. 606 FairOaks said at 11:06 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Ouch I thought he was solid the past 2 games

  611. 611 Jarock said at 11:11 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Entire secondary outside of the starters. Actually, toss Jenkins on that pile too as he had a couple of wtf plays early too.

Barkley or Tebow. May as well bring back Goebel.

    Or Pedersen.

James Casey with a catch in Denver.

Trading Boykin away for basically a minor pick is one move that this team is going to really regret. Paper mache thin in the secondary again this year.

You can add that Mathis and the OL reserves too.

  616. 616 Avery Greene said at 11:27 PM on August 29th, 2015:

He didn’t want to play nickel. He wanted a chance to start on the outside. I’m not looking at it as a mistake yet. But we might be in base a bit more this year.

  617. 617 Joe Minx said at 11:29 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Jamie Apody on 6ABC just let it slip Parkey has a leg injury. Why has this not been said?

  618. 618 Joe Minx said at 11:32 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Never mind, see it’s all over twitter now. Not a big deal supposedly. Would have kicked if it were a regular season game.

  619. 619 FairOaks said at 11:39 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Seems about right. There was something weird with letting Kip Smith kick last week, and then all the shenanigans this week. But if there was a serious problem, there would have been another kicker signed this week.

  620. 620 Avery Greene said at 11:32 PM on August 29th, 2015:

    What’s the deal with Alonso?

  621. 621 Joe Minx said at 11:34 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Chip says he was having leg pain. Not related to his knee.

  622. 622 Avery Greene said at 11:34 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Is it bad? Should I be worried?

  623. 623 Joe Minx said at 11:35 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Well, Chip said he would have played if it were regular season, so. Still the guy hasn’t played a single down in a game yet.

  624. 624 Avery Greene said at 11:38 PM on August 29th, 2015:

So I’m not worried then. It seems these last two preseason games are all about the backups.

If he needs rest and time to heal, this is the time to do it. During the season everything changes and most likely they won’t have that luxury to rest players.

  625. 625 Avery Greene said at 11:34 PM on August 29th, 2015:

Best quote of the night. Watched the game with a buddy of mine who’s a Packers fan. Eagles first drive he says, “When did Ryan Reynolds start playing QB for the Eagles?”

He wasn’t happy with his defense, and can I say Bradford is the real deal.
