Gardner in the Lead?

Posted: August 13th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 395 Comments »

Andrew Gardner worked with the first team at RG on Thursday. That’s the fourth time he’s done that in
Training Camp, making him the leader in that category. Does that mean he is now the leader in the competition to be the starting RG?

That could very well be the case.

Gardner started eight games in 2014. Two of them came at RT, the rest were at RG. He was the Eagles starting RG for the final six games of the season.

My guess is that the Eagles would have loved for Matt Tobin to win the job because of his age (just turned 25 in June). Gardner is 29. But Gardner is the better player right now. He has more experience and is more athletic. Gardner can be a good run blocker. He is strong enough to move his man off the ball. He also has the movement skills Chip Kelly likes in his OL.

The big issue with Gardner is pass protection. Quick interior rushers can get the best of him. I would hope the coaches have him face Vinny Curry as much as possible to help get ready for the rest of the league. If you can block Curry on the inside, you can block just about anybody.

Gardner isn’t going to become Evan Mathis Pt. 2, but he can be an effective starter. He can be a good player in a run-heavy offense. You don’t want him pass blocking 45 times a game, although that is true of most OGs.

Let’s get onto the rest of practice talk.

Jimmy Bama focused on Eric Rowe.

During one-on-ones today, Eric Rowe looked really good on three consecutive reps:

  1. Rep 1: Pass breakup on what was sort of a seam route.
  2. Rep 2: He jammed a receiver at the line of scrimmage, who took at least two or three seconds to get into his route. The quarterback completed a short pass, but in reality, he would have immediately come off that receiver and looked to his next progression in a real game setting.
  3. Rep 3: Deep ball to Riley Cooper that Rowe picked.

Very encouraging series for him.

Rowe is now working at CB and NB. I think having him win the Nickel job is a long shot because he is a rookie that hasn’t played that spot very much in his football career. The coaches are giving him a chance because he is so smart, instinctive and talented. If anyone can learn the role quickly, it is Rowe.

Tim McManus had a great quote from Rowe.

“Mentally I think I had a rough day yesterday, just with my man technique stuff,” said Rowe, who began his transition to nickel Wednesday. “Last night I went home, watched film, and knew what I had to do the next day. Today when I stepped out, I knew I wasn’t going to make those same mistakes. Going against [Cooper], I just made sure I stayed on top of the route instead of me just kinda trailing behind, and he just threw the fade.”

Chip Kelly is always talking about players who love football and who have a growth mindset. You can see the benefit of having players like that when you read Rowe’s words. There are plenty of rookies and veterans who settle for “good enough”. Rowe has been given an opportunity to win a key job and he’s going to do everything he possibly can to win that job.

* * * * *

McManus also had some thoughts on the battle for the number three QB job.

Seven-on-sevens, and the battle for the No. 3 QB spot is heating up! Matt Barkley with a nice ball down the left sideline to Eric Tomlinson. Tim Tebow answers with a bullet down the seam to Mike Johnson. This one is tough to call. If it iwas being judged solely off accuracy, Barkley would be the winner. But Tebow has improved as a thrower and you wonder if Kelly is intrigued by the run/pass element he could bring to the table.

Coming out of camp, that is a fair assessment. There is an argument for each player.

Preseason games will be huge. And don’t focus too much on Tebow’s running. The coaches want the third QB to be able to be a functional passer. Tebow isn’t going to be as good a passer, but he needs to be close in order to win the job. I’m looking forward to seeing his throwing mechanics.

Good stuff from Jeff McLane.

Defensive-offensive line one-on-ones were abbreviated, but there were a few notable matchups. David Molk still looks like the leading candidate to be the backup center. He squared off against undrafted rookie DT Travis Raciti and kept going at him with his hands. Raciti appeared upset with the extra action and took a late swing at Molk. Tobin struggled against DE Brandon Bair and was tossed aside at guard. DE Taylor Hart stood out when he muscled undrafted rookie Malcolm Bunche to the ground. OL Josh Andrews battled to a stalemate vs. DE Cedric Thornton, but pulled up lame. He later checked into the trainer’s tent and left practice.

Vinny Curry played a little outside linebacker in the spring. The Eagles have no intention of having him in the OLB rotation, but they want to use his pass-rush skills and had him rushing from a two-point stance off the edge Thursday. He jumped offsides on one play. … Thurmond has shown a knack for getting into the backfield on run plays. He slashed through and “stopped” RB Raheem Mostert on one carry. It’ll be interesting to watch Thurmond play safety for the first time Sunday.

Matt Tobin hasn’t been getting glowing reviews from anyone this summer. Could be be cut? Preseason games will be huge for him. Tobin stood out the last couple of years in preseason games.

Get Curry on the field as much as possible. I don’t care if he is a DL or LB or some new position is created for him. Heck, put him at SS and have him blitz. Curry is the kind of disruptive player you want on the field and attacking the QB.

Brandon Lee Gowton wrote about Sam Bradford.

Not Sam Bradford’s best day. He had a series where he went 0-4. One of the passes was almost picked off by Byron Maxwell, who still looks great. Maxwell also had great coverage on a deep ball intended for Agholor.

One positive sign from Bradford came when he kept the ball on the read option. He didn’t get super far but he didn’t look hurt while running. Seemed to be fine.

One of Bradford’s better series was highlighted when he hit Brent Celek with a strike where only the tight end could get it.

It was good to note that he took off running. Jimmy Bama has been writing recently about how Bradford never runs. No one needs him to be Mike Vick, but he must be able to move around and run when that is the best option. That said, I’d rather him focus on throwing the ball in camp. Save the runs for the regular season.

The worst part of training camp is you can never be sure if the Eagles player is really good or the Eagles player he’s facing is really bad.

  8. 8 TheMeta88 said at 11:41 PM on August 13th, 2015:

Jimmy is the only person I’ve seen say Bradford doesn’t look healthy in camp. Literally the only person.

I also don’t see how him not running is a bad thing. Does Brady run? Either Manning?

Bradford is a quarterback first, second, and third. He has some wheels to him when necessary but the bulk of his damage will be done from the pocket.

Also it’s training camp so there probably isn’t much of a rush to begin with. That or he gets it out so quick he neutralizes it which is good quarterbacking so quit the bitching.

I guess when Tebow is ripping off 20+ yarders every now and then Jimmy has gotten antsy but this has been the biggest non story of camp.

We have three pre-season games to see how healthy he looks for ourselves and in a live environment.

I want to see him with my own eyes.

  9. 9 the guy said at 11:44 PM on August 13th, 2015:

Jimmy said Bradford doesn’t run. That is not the same as not being healthy.

The replies to his Bradford comments were as embarrassing as the replies to his Cowboys trolling. At least Cowboys fans assumed malice before typing.

  10. 10 Dave said at 8:32 AM on August 14th, 2015:

I call BS. Here is his write up from 2 days ago:

“A few Eagles media people have noted that Bradford doesn’t look hurt. That is a statement with which I agree. He’s not limping, nor does he show any sign of pain after his reps. However, not looking hurt and not looking 100 percent (which he clearly is absolutely not) are two different things. From what I’ve seen, unlike the other quarterbacks, Bradford does not attempt sudden movements to get away from defensive linemen, who, of course, do not touch the quarterbacks in camp. I’m not sure I’ve even seen him sprint yet. In other words, while it is true that he doesn’t look hurt, he shouldn’t, because he barely moves.”

I’m with TheMeta88 on this one. The whole 1st half of his article he makes it clear that Bradford is hurt even though he doesn’t look hurt. Heck, he even uploads Bradford video with the Rams to show how he should look.

I just can’t get on board with what he’s saying when nobody else seems to see it that way…and it’s not like there isn’t a lot of coverage out there between the local and national markets.

I can’t tell you what Jimmy meant, but I didn’t take that as: “Sam Bradford is secretly hurt so panic”. I took it as: “Bradford might not be 100% yet or might not believe he is, because he avoids moving as much as possible.”

He might be right or wrong, but believing Jimmy’s full of it because Bob Grotz and Peter King haven’t said anything isn’t a compelling argument.

  19. 19 ICDogg said at 12:45 AM on August 14th, 2015:

Jimmy’s criticism seems fair to me. It isn’t just that he doesn’t run, he’s not scrambling outside the pocket nor moving much in the pocket. That doesn’t mean he can’t but it’s something that he needs to be able to do.

  20. 20 wee2424 said at 1:01 PM on August 14th, 2015:

“And don’t focus too much on Tebow’s running. The coaches want the third QB to be able to be a functional passer.”

A functional passer, yes, but I don’t think we should downplay the running aspect. Let’s face it, if Bradford and Sanchez go down, neither Barkley nor Tebow is going to carry the team with their arm. A ground attack, however, featuring Tebow and our awesome running back stable can win games. Part of his Denver success was picking up 60 yards per game, and opening up lanes for the backs. When opponents stacked the box, he was a good enough passer to take advantage of the gaps in the secondary.

  22. 22 ICDogg said at 12:39 AM on August 14th, 2015:

I agree. If it comes down to the 3rd qb you take whatever edge you can get. You’re in triage mode at that point so the normal way of operating goes out the window. Now you’re just trying to gut out a win somehow.

  23. 23 Media Mike said at 6:12 AM on August 14th, 2015:

I’d like to downplay the running aspect of QB play right out of the league.

  24. 24 disqus57 said at 10:41 AM on August 14th, 2015:

Good luck convincing Pete Carroll of that. His QB picked up 850 yards last year, and the team did okay.

  25. 25 Media Mike said at 2:52 PM on August 14th, 2015:

Pure Steve Young style running and a necessity. Plus Wilson is an extremely unique player. His runs are only that of last resort and due to an extremely low pool of pass catching talent.

For every one Wilson you have multiple bums like Scam Newton, RG-Me, Kaepertrash, Johnny Speedball, Tie-rod Taylor, Tea-blow, etc. etc. etc. They’re all garbage except for Wilson.

  26. 26 disqus57 said at 3:22 PM on August 14th, 2015:

No, it’s not “last resort” – the read option is an integral, important part of the Seahawks offense. (article) And you’re free to make up juvenile nicknames, but Newton, Griffin, Kaepernick, and Tebow have all taken teams to the playoffs with read option offenses. Tebow did so with a system hastily installed mid-season by coaches with no experience in it. Have a blessed day, my friend.

Yes, let’s call out one of our most thoughtful, intelligent, experienced posters for liking a guy that may or may not be having a rough camp thus far.

You win, man! Good job! The internet is awesome!

But seriously, don’t bring this nonsense here.

  30. 30 Dominik said at 5:44 AM on August 14th, 2015:

It all depends on the language. The post from Steve was harsh, too harsh for me. At the same time, D3FB has gone out of his way in telling everyone around here that Tobin is good.

I’m not going to write Tobin off without a Preseason game being played. The lines are tough to evaluate in camp, especially for reporters. But having 2 opportunities to be the starting RG and not getting any more chances in over a week doesn’t look like a good TC. And that’s from the coaches, not some reporters.

But again, can’t write Tobin off at this point. That’s just not fair. But in the end, if you repeatedly write how good a player is, you will be taken by your word. That’s only fair.

  31. 31 bill said at 8:25 AM on August 14th, 2015:

I think you are mis-stating what D3FB actually said. He reviewed tape of Tobin from college and several games last year. Came to the conclusion that Tobin played well in run blocking, but struggled some in pass pro. Took into account that he was playing on a high ankle sprain and that he’s relatively young with little experience, and projected growth for this year.

I didn’t see anywhere that he proclaimed him the next coming of Evan Mathis, or even Todd Herremans. And just because he’s possibly losing to Gardner in the competition right now doesn’t necessarily mean that D3FB was wrong in his projection. It is possible that Tobin is better than he was last year, but so is Gardner, and Gardner is just that much better. Of course, as you admit, we, as outsiders, know very little of what Kelly is thinking until game time comes.

  32. 32 GEAGLE said at 8:29 AM on August 14th, 2015:

I agree with everything you say and I love D3FB’s contributions (and I thought his film study of Tobin was great), but is it possible that SteveH was just joking?

Maybe his tone didn’t come across the way he intended, but I read his comment as a little light ribbing as opposed to calling out D3FB. I hope this is the case anyway.

  34. 34 SteveH said at 12:15 PM on August 14th, 2015:

  36. 36 Media Mike said at 6:18 AM on August 14th, 2015:

I don’t have a lot of faith in Tobin either, mostly due to him playing with an empty cup for a lot of games last year, but D3 was using some sound logic based on segments of film (and a projection that Tobin would be more healthy) to talk up Tobin’s ability to play.

I won’t lob a bomb directly at another person posting on here for their opinion on a player in a stand-alone comment. I’m sure you can break D3’s stones directly when he makes his own comments on here.

  37. 37 GEAGLE said at 9:09 AM on August 14th, 2015:

I don’t think tobin is bad… He still shows promise and I would gladly keep up as Barbres backüp at LG, but while Tobin does have some talent and ability, I don’t think he is the best option at RG…. I liked what I saw out of Gardner last year more then what I saw from Tobin…. So while I never really bought they hype of Tobin starting, he is still a nice young player who will probably be our best backüp this year while Gadner and Barbre start at the Guard spots..
    .,
Think Gadners biggest threat at RG is Moffit shaking off all the rust and returning to form….
    ..
Not really sure why Tobin got so much hype but Gardner flew under the radar, but whatever, not my problem

  38. 38 D3FB said at 7:11 AM on August 14th, 2015:

Specifically what I said was that I was high on Tobin. I was optimistic that he would be the guy.

This was based on going back and watching his all 22 from last year. His skill set is very similar to Gardeners. He’s a good athletic run blocker who has some limitations in pass pro. I projected a growth based on having gained valuable playing time last year and the fact he was a late bloomer who walked on at Iowa (so he’s a hard worker and like all Iowa OL, technically sound). However player development isn’t liner. Sometimes it suddenly clicks. Other times guys stagnate.

I was told a few weeks ago by someone with better first hand access than I that the team had cooled on Tobin since last year, but they weren’t sure as to why. (Gun to my head I’m guessing it’s a “not tough enough” situation with regards to injuries). As you can see I’m not working with pure information input into my projections. There are unquantifiable aspects that I as an outsider just will not know.

Am I going to be wrong from time to time? Yes. Because if I wasn’t I would be making prop bets in Vegas and living on my own private island.

However, my opinions are based on film work, as well as a deep understanding of X’s and O’s and technique. I’m not going to write 400 things about every player and jump up and down every time one of my opinions is validated. Nor will I be someone who claims my opinion was different than the one I held after the fact in some effort of looking correct.

Also it’s week 2 of camp with minimal contact. It’s not like he’s struggling to make an arena league roster.

  41. 41 ian_no_2 said at 1:51 AM on August 14th, 2015:

One of the main guys I’m rooting for is Tomlinson, and he answered critics of his NFL receiving potential today. Kelly activates 7 OL and there were at least two games last year where two guys went down so there were no reserves left in case of another injury, so with Tomlinson you can activate a blocking TE for short yardage and other formations who can be the emergency 8th OL. Supposedly whatever he can do against good NFL coverage he has a knack for getting open against less attention. Plus the beard and all that – he could be a fixture.

Raciti – a 3-4 DE that can be a serviceable fill in is worth more than a WR with some exciting game tape, and that’s what Raciti is, but I don’t see him being better than that. I was just venting about Biggers at DB but Peter King was just talking about how thin most teams are there (which may be why Kelly picked 3 CBs in April), same with DL. Raciti might be worth keeping on the PS in case there’s an injury.

  42. 42 ian_no_2 said at 5:39 AM on August 14th, 2015:

Chris Maragos started as the first team safety because they start with the guys with the most experience. That’s one way to view Gardner’s position now.

  43. 43 Dominik said at 5:47 AM on August 14th, 2015:

First few days of camp are different than 12 days into camp. Also, Tobin had two chances at the RG starter, but none after that. I don’t think your argument with experience is especially valid when it comes to the RG position.

  44. 44 ian_no_2 said at 6:56 AM on August 14th, 2015:

There’s a difference between the two, most notably that Gardner has a chance to win the starting job and Maragos doesn’t.

In many practice reports, I read Maehl being the target for Bradford and Sanchez quite often (which means action with the 1s and 2s). I know Chip is rotating WR in and out, but there is no reason to be worried, is there?

I mean, we have three talented young guns. We have 5m Cooper, 1m guar. Austin and a great STer in Ajirotutu and two young guys in Bailey and Pratt who appear to be at least PS material. 8 guys, 6 of them who could make the roster and it isn’t guarenteed we even keep 6 (altough I think we’ll do, but it’s no given). Maehl is finally gone after camp, I hope. He’s the kind of WR that just gives me nothing. Not good, not young, not fast, not a great athlete (I know, very good 3 cone and 20 and 60 shuttle drill, but I never saw that on the field). No NFL skills now, no upside, that’s just a bad mix imo.

A guy from SB nation does a series called Breaking Madden, He’ll take an upcoming game on the schedule, make a theme and break the game. He’ll take a portion of the team and replace it with custom creations named after some of his twitter followers. In this one I think he was trying to create the most amount of injuries possible. He made it a snowy Carolina day, turned injuries to maximum, penalties off ( to line up in the back field), and made a ton of 7-foot tall bean stalks with minimum stats, particularly durability, to play Fullback and take direct snaps over and over. So yeah that was one of his twitter followers getting a herniated disc.

Here’s an example of a maximum height/minimum weight/minimum stats twitter follower attempting to tackle minimum height/maximum weight/maximum stats player (Breaking Madden Stalwart: BEEFTANK (all caps are a must)) with the controller sitting idle on the coffee table

Lol @ another cowboy RB, Gua Johnson, getting injured.l.
    ..
We have been laughing at the Cowscum running backs for months… As much as we ripped them, im starting to think it’s even a bigger problem for them then they think..
    ..
Gus, McFadden and Randle are all injured, they had to run that bum Lache Seastrunk last night..
    ..
seriously, Dallas Probably has the worst RB in the NFL… Who has less RB talent then them?
    ..
Baldi claims that Randle ISNT a starting RB, he lacks the focus to be an every down back… I dont side with Baldi too often, but he could very well be right… I’m not the least bit sold on Randle.. Being the featured back that the defense studied all week long is very different then being a backüp who defenses didn’t respect allowing him to get 7 yards a carry,…. This season will be a much different experience for Randle then last year when he came in the game and ripped off 7yards per carry because defenses barely respected him..
    ..
McFadden is TRASH! Even worse he is so fragile, dude is the king of soft tissue injuries, he is out with two bad hamstrings
    ..
Everyone talks like this cowboy team is some juggernaut but you have to be able to run the ball in November/December, and i can’t fathom how they could undervalue the RB position to this extreme extent… When the Cowboys OL faces quality DL’s, it’s up to the RB’s to make Linebackers miss or run thru them, yet they don’t have the horses at RB… While our DL occupy the Cowboy OL, how the hell are these RB scabs going to shake free of Kiko and Kendricks?

Instead of helping Romo with a run game, you make a mockery of the RB position and now Romo has to carry the team and the run game? Yet people talk about them as if they are some juggernaut team destined to make the playoffs? Get real,..

  60. 60 Avery Greene said at 9:08 AM on August 14th, 2015:

Demarco Murray had close to 500 carries last year. NONE of those RBs can handle it, and truthfully I don’t even think they can do it as a committee. They have a very good OLine, but people are putting them up there like they are the best ever. I’m not buying that.

I look at it like very good OL and a very good RB make for a very nice offense. If they don’t have anyone to carry the load, the pressure goes back to Romo.

That’s what Jerry Jones deserves BTW for tampering with AP and thinking he was going to get him on the team.

  61. 61 GEAGLE said at 9:11 AM on August 14th, 2015:

Thinking they could stick any RB behind that OL is laughable…
    ..
When that Dallas OL plays against a piss poor DL, the OL can be enough to run the ball well… But when that great dallas OL gets tied up having to battle against an Elite DL, it’s up to the RBs to make the Linebackers miss, or break their tackles…… And they simply don’t have the RB Talent to run wild against our ILBs
    ..
They are going to have to pick up other RBs.. Can’t wait to see the slop that they sigń ..

Thurmond was active versus the run as a CB but how he played the run as a safety was one of my biggest questions Mark for him. To hear he has made a habit of shooting through the line on run plays is very encouraging. Have to wait untill games to truly see but he almost sounds like a natural at the position.

  69. 69 GEAGLE said at 9:26 AM on August 14th, 2015:

Understand your concern… Seeing how Thurmond plays the run is certainly an important question we need answered,,, but our Front 7 has been shutting down run games with Nate at safety, who no one will confuse for an enforcer against the run….I don’t care who we start at safety, you wont be running on our front 7.. One of the top 3’front 7 in the game,,.
    .
Heck we probably have the best front 7 in the NFC now that Carolina lost Greg Hardy, And Star Lotululie injured

  70. 70 RogerPodacter said at 9:58 AM on August 14th, 2015:

i think Jenkins made the comment that with Nate, the team was forced to put him (Jenkins) in the box more since Nate was more of a center-fielder type safety and wasn’t so useful playing in the box.
if thurmond can do it even sometimes, that frees up both safeties to be the more versatile players that they can be

  71. 71 wee2424 said at 1:16 PM on August 14th, 2015:

Agree. I am a big fan of Thurmond, but I still think it’s going to be Jenkins in the box alot more then Thurmond. Thurmond will stay back or go to slot. With his injury history and size you don’t want him in the box much.

What he may be effective at now and then is blitzing. He has been rated the most effective CB at getting to the QB the last few years. His opportunities will only increase at safety.

If Mathis wants to actually play this year, he is going to have to pick a team, hurry up and learn the playbook, and prove he should start for his new team with only a few weeks left to start the season.
    ..
MATHIS went from starting on what should be a playoff team making almost 6mil for his services this year,,, now he is getting like 2mil per year offers, a third of what he was making for us… But not only is he going to lose a ton of money, but he may not even start this year because of his actions,…. If he hasn’t fired his agent yet, what else would need to happen for this fool to fire his agent for the HORRible CAREER advice?
    ..
mathis was a journeymen his entire career… He came here and was able to start on a good pffense, make pro bowls, start getting some recognition all while in the twilight of his career… You would think he would have appreciated the position he was in and would care enough to fight to finish his career starting for a good team, making good money..
    ..
Instead he is about to miss the first week of the preseason, while teams like Miami are low balling the heck out of him, trying to get him to sign for only 2mil
    ..
I don’t know that I can thing of too many other examples where and agent screwed up his clients career this badly,. mathis was Probably better off representing himself, he would have done less damage to his career then that Greedy Prick Rosenhause did…

However the whole situation was stupid – he was miss advised by Drew (which is rare he normally does a pretty good job for his players), I think his issue is he knew he would make $6mil this year and be cut next and felt that he was worth more than that. He was wrong.

it would just be for show anyway really…
he’ll be eating wings on the bench with Sancho after the first.

  146. 146 Patrick said at 1:12 PM on August 14th, 2015:

No reason to play, meaning less snaps, not ready for NFL passrush etc, the points you see in this thread, on twitter and the likes. I get that they’re not just excuses but actual arguments, that it isn’t the end of the world if Bradford doesn’t play, and maybe its just my own personal issue of it confirming my fears about Bradford.

But its fucking telling that our starting QB can’t handle the going full speed in training camp, can’t handle playing a full pre-season. If Brady or Rodgers are banged up and they dont play the first pre-season game, OK, I get that. But the most injury-prone player in the NFL will miss his first opportunity to play… Not doing much to prove the injury rep wrong.

Even if Bradford plays well this year and stays injury free, theres still no freaking way i’m paying him big money to tear his ACL again the first OTA before the 2016 season.

  147. 147 b3nz0z said at 1:17 PM on August 14th, 2015:

the chances of a re-tear, according to the medical experts, is pretty freaking low.

MCL then. Or the other knee. Maybe his elbow or shoulder.

  149. 149 b3nz0z said at 1:31 PM on August 14th, 2015:

sure! heck maybe the planet will explode right under him or angels will drag him away during a game-winning drive.

  150. 150 Patrick said at 1:35 PM on August 14th, 2015:

When it comes to Bradford injuries, I wouldn’t be surprised. Homie can’t catch a break. Maybe he’ll get an injury never seen in the NFL before.

I’d still bet a good amount on SB tearing his ACL again sometime in his career.

  151. 151 botto said at 1:52 PM on August 14th, 2015:

well if you know already he’s getting injured why do you need him to play 8 snaps in the 1st preseason game?
    who cares.
sounds like you think sanchez needs the reps since he’ll be the qb for the year

  152. 152 Patrick said at 2:02 PM on August 14th, 2015:

yeah I get it, we all want to see Bradford out there looking tough.
even healthy, he has to be eased in.
and this game is not about who will be the starting QB don’t forget, we know who will start, its about the o-line and the defense and the young kids.

  155. 155 Patrick said at 1:28 PM on August 14th, 2015:

Lets not pretend like playing in the first pre-season game isn’t easing him in.

Also, “fuck” the OL, the defense and the kids. I love our team. I cannot wait to see Chips offense in action. I cannot wait to see our young studs go stop opponents. I really am exited about seeing how good we are.

But the simple fact is that if you dont have a QB, you’re not winning the Super Bowl, at least unless the rest of your team is historically good. Mark Sanchez sure as shit isn’t the QB who will win us that trophy.

I do get, it probably does matter if Bradford plays. I’d even make the argument that most of the sure starters could play the majority of that 3rd game, and nothing else and be good to go. They’ll be ready.

I just find it a perfect chapter in the story that is Sam Bradfords career, that the first opportunity to actually play for his new team, he is injured. Not bad, not good, not a kicker, Injured, because thats his career so far. The one word to describe Bradfords NFL career is injuries.

If he’s being held out Saturday or against the Packers, then I’m going to start being worried. He’s taken all the reps he can at practice, and if that’s not a good sign, then I don’t know what else we’re looking for.

I assume this board is bitching and crying over Bradford, but I’m perfectly fine with him not playing… All week we been posting the 3 players we were looking forward to seeing in the preseason and you never saw Bradford on my list… Sure he needs to shake of rust and play against a live rush but so does every QB this time of year and it’s not uncommon to see teams sit their QB week 1 of preseason..

Heck I certainly don’t HATE getting a look at our OL Sunday before we stick Bradford behind it next week in a live game situation.., let the OL get a game under its belt before we task them with protecting the Crowned Jewel of our franchise..
    ..
Good news: I hear that Demarco Murray is feeling fantastic this offseason and this is all part of chips plan to give Murray a light load this summer. If we are going to complain that our new RB had 500 touches last year knowing the history, probably a good idea to lighten his summer load and not treat him as a normal back… Adam Caplin says Murray feels fantastic and this is all precautionary…
    .,,
It’s a long season, it’s not a horrible thing for chip to take precaution with his high risk high reward players..
    ..
AP didn’t play all last year and he won’t play this preseason.. Actually AP hasn’t played a preseason game in 4 years..

Yeah man, to tell you the truth, I will probably enjoy watching Sanchez play Sunday more then I would enjoy Bradford… Because watching Bradford in meaningless games comes with an element of nervous fear every time pass rushers get near him..
    ..
Subday I can enjoy Sanxhez in peace, without being a nervous wreck.. Chip said he won’t play much either but I do hope he gets a few drives.. From everything I heard he hasn’t had a GREAT Canp, and I have high hopes for Sanchez so I want to see him Play and try and get it going.. I have high hopes for Sanxhez know that he is in year 2, I expect him to play at a higher level then we saw last year.. Heck, not only should Sanchez have a better command of this offense then he had last year, but he didn’t exactly get to play behind a quality OL and a great run game last year… I’m curious to see what he looks like having built on year 1, while playing behind a better OL and a much better RUn Game… Considering Chip asked Sanchez to throw over 50 passes in a game, it’s probably safe to say that we didn’t see Sanchez with the compliments of a great run game… Curious to see what Sanchez looks like Sunday with our starting OL and Ryan Mathews, along with his man crush Pope Jordam beings u better then last year… Hype to see Sanchez Sunday
    ..
I’m not a Barkley or Tebow fan but they interest me much more then the typical QBs you see in the second half of a preseason game.. And I like that Tebow and Barklwy have to play with pressure of knowing that the loser of that battle will get waived..
    ,,
Barkley is supposed to show significant growth now that he is in year 3 of the same offense and Tebow running around in q Chip Kelly’offense is way more interesting then watching Kafka or Koy detmer in the second half..

  193. 193 anon said at 6:38 PM on August 14th, 2015:

Agree, I mean I think Sanchez is going to crush it, personally, think I he knows the offense better and think his arm is better as well, taking more chances down the field, problem is no one is going to look good next to Bradford, especially when playing in shorts.
But Sanchez can run the offense lightening fast, and that’s fun to watch. Also want to see how Chip uses Tebow, and whether we always go for it in 2pt conversions

  194. 194 Avery Greene said at 2:54 PM on August 14th, 2015:

I think they can do it under the guise of precautionary, but didn’t Rothlisberger sit Sunday? 8-10 snaps is not a lot and they know he’s the starter. Sanchez can get those and you have roughly (hoping) 3.5 quarters left to see Barkley and Tebow.

They’ve already said he’s playing Saturday. Bradford has taken all the snaps he can in practice. He’s not limping. His throws look good. I’m not worried. Haven’t seen anything that makes me worry, but that could change if something happens like he doesn’t play Saturday, or he starts wearing a brace again, or he starts limping.

Missing 8-10 snaps in a meaningless game doesn’t have me worried.

I don’t think this has anything to do with how healthy he is as I believe he is 100%, but has to do with getting him hurt with a new injury over a meaningless series. He has nothing to gain by playing and throwing a couple bubble screens and then being done. Next week he will have the opportunity to play a quarter (maybe more?), to knock of some of the NFL rust.

Too many brittle players signed this season for me to be calm about the number of players who can’t practice for one reason or another.

Welcome to the NFL man. I would say we have gotten through this camp relatively healthy. 4 pre-season games to go and we are off to the races.

Names we don’t see are Walter Thurmond, Sam Bradford, Demeco Ryans, or Alonso (for anything other than what it appears is a minor concussion). That is surprising and promising.

  233. 233 Jarock said at 4:24 PM on August 14th, 2015:

Thurmond makes it more than four games and I’ll need to eat my hat. Add Demarco to your list as prior to last season, he tended to be nicked a lot.

Hopefully it doesn’t cost him any regular season games.,

Skins have 3 Injured TE’s.. Blocking TE Logan Paulson INJURED, what’s his name, the Recieving TE broke his ankle yesterday… And Jordan Reed is also banged up as usual.
    ..
The Cowboys have 3 injured RBs
    ..
So fair what did we lose? A #4 OLB and a 6th round rookie Cornwr? Two players who have NEVER played an NFL snap? Small potatoes compared to injures most teams suffer… Our most serious injury is Ertz possibly missing a game or two… If only every summer our injuries would be like this year

If I had to guess I would say it is going to require lots of cold tub, pre-game and post-game stretching all year. He should be able to get through most games without feeling it awfully, but it will be an issue.

I am no doctor but I pulled my groin a couple of seasons ago and had to stretch the hell out of it to play flag football.

So no I am not 100% positive but I would bet lots of cash on it.
    -edit-

  247. 247 GEAGLE said at 4:37 PM on August 14th, 2015:

I’d be surprised if he misses any game time, because by week 1’he will be able to play thru the pain, actually he won’t even feel it during the game. The problem is he won’t give it the time to heal so he probably will have to deal with the pain for the rest of the season,.. Worst case scenario he misses 2 games… If it’s a “Partial” tear he won’t miss much more then that… Kelce’s was much worse..

  248. 248 GEAGLE said at 4:33 PM on August 14th, 2015:

it depends…. The problem is that by the season opener, if Ertz isn’t healed yet, by the he willl probably be able to play thru it, so he will have to decide if he wants to sit out for a few weeks and really let it heal, or he can choose to play thru it which is what I always did and I ended up having to deal with the injury for two years…because you can play thru the pain, it’s going to be Hard for Ertz to sit out as long as It takes To be fully healed.. So it’s probably likely that he will come back too soon. Play thru the pain, which means he will have to play thru It all year… ITS a painful, annoying injury, but when the game starts you don’t even feel it, it’s the rest of the time that he has to live thru the pain

  251. 251 GEAGLE said at 4:47 PM on August 14th, 2015:

Doubt it matters….Ertz is probably not going to want to miss game time…that’s really the problem with the injury, you can play thru it, so athletes typically womt sit out as long as it takes to be healed and pain free,, which is fine for us because it shouldmt cost Ertz much game time if any, but it sucks for him because he is going to play on it which will cause it to linger the rest Of the year…..
    ..
I played on it for like 2 years, playing thru It is why it hampered me for that long. But it’s too easy to play thru, so it’s hard to sit out of games.. Actually it probably bothers you more when you aren’t playing, then it does when you are playing. Adrenaline is a helluva Drug….
    ..
But there is a pretty wide Range of what “partial tear” can mean, so without his medical info, it’s hard for us to have a real discussion of exactly WHAT this injury means in terms of how it will effect us..
    ..
My understanding is Kelce’s injury was much more signifcant

  252. 252 wee2424 said at 5:31 PM on August 14th, 2015:

  253. 253 GEAGLE said at 3:41 PM on August 14th, 2015:

I like that bradford wants to play and ISNT too happy with chips decision.. what Matters is that Bradford CAN play, not whether he actually plays or doesn’t…

Actually, if we Want to “Ease” SAM back into the game, it’s not a terrible idea to have Bradfiord full participant in training Camp Practice, with the next step being to face another teams defense in joint practice with the Ravens, and then expose him to his first LIVE game action against the Ravens Dfense in the preseason,,.. Heck, not a terrible idea to let our OL get some game action before we ask them to protect such an important player… I can see value in taking a look at our OL Sunday before we stick Bradford behind them..
    .
I get that as fans we look forward to seeing guys in the preseasons, but the preseason is NOT for our entertainment. the Preseason is for getting our boys ready to play in September. That’s the ONLY purpose of football in August… If we kick off against Atlanta and guys like Bradford and Murray ARENT looking like they are ready to play, then we can complain about how chip treated them during the preseason…..mIf Chip feels that we are better off easing Bradford in, giving him another week of practice against the Ravens defense before we expose him to live action, what’s the problem?
    ..
I’m Anxipus to see our QB like everyone, but whats important is getting our team ready for september…somehow I don’t the 10 to 15 snaps he would have played on Sunday will make that big of a difference in his preperation for September….. With that said, I do think it’s important that he does see live action in the preseason… If Bradfiord plays two drives in game 2, and the first half of Game 3, I’ll be happy….. IF SAM is healthy and they hold him out of game 2, then I would have a problem … But missing game 1 is small potatoes. No reason for the city to get upset about our coach trying to protect players health…
    ….

  254. 254 Jarock said at 3:48 PM on August 14th, 2015:

I agree with your assessment that pre-season games are more about coach evaluation and ensuring preparedness, but I can’t help thinking that this is a statement by the coaching staff that they do not truly believe Sam’s ready. Given how long it has been since he was injured, how can we not be concerned? If Bradford was our starter last season and had performed well, I’d agree about game one. Since Bradford has never done jack at the pro level, I do not share your optimism.

  255. 255 GEAGLE said at 3:55 PM on August 14th, 2015:

For me, this isn’t even a slight concern… I’m way more concerned with what happens NEXT.. While it sucks that we have to wait to see the most Talemted passer I ever had the pleasure to root for, in terms of Easing him back into action, I can see a case for Not Playing him in game 1….
    ..
He has Only beenA full go in practice for us since camp started a little over a week ago… Sitting him put game 1 means not only another week of practice before we risk him in a game, but this way he gets to practice against a different Defemse this week, before we expose him to an opposing defense in Live action..
    ..
Let him get different looks from a Ravens defense in Practice this week. let him practice a few days against an opposing defense that doesn’t care about him remaining healthy….. These days it’s hard enough to keep your starting QB Healyhy for 16 games, I WILL NEVER. I repeat NEVER complain about us not risking our players in the preseason. I will NEVER complaim about our coaches trying to take injury prevention precautions.
I’m Nervous enough about keeping Bradford healthy for 16 games.. I’m going to enjoy week 1 of the preseason without being a nervous wreck, holding my breath that Bradford dpesmt get hurt…

I’lol tell you this, If I was a Paclers fan, I would be FURIOUS that our HEADCoach let Aaron Rodgers play an entire quarter and attempt 20 passes in the first preseason games.. A few plays, he was like inches away from taking punishing hits from Chandler Jones…I would be calling for chip to be fired today if he did what McCarthy did last night…
    ..
I will be a nervous wreck as it is during the dress Rehersal 3rd preseason game where SAM has to play the entire first half, but I understand that it’s neccessary to get the offense ready to go… I would probably play SAM on Sumday if it were up to me, but I have NO problem sitting him out of game 1.. I can see a good case for sitting him, and I see a good case for playing him.. Either way, I don’t think its a big deal that shluld upset us

Nope. I love Chip the coach. Not so sold on Chip the GM. Bradford’s overall stats are mediocre. Yes, he set rookie records and his team still lost. He has an overall losing record and a career completion % of 58.6. His ‘pro bowl’ season it was 60.7. More damning, his avg yards per pass has never been above 7. Yes, I agree it is in part due to the crappy team that he played for, but it’s also the profile of a QB who did not elevate his team. Doesn’t mean he’s not incredibly talented. So were Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell. I don’t have an issue with taking a flyer on Bradford, but we drastically overpaid.

  262. 262 Michael Winter Cho said at 10:59 PM on August 14th, 2015:

He picked up volume stats, the ones achieved by doing something poorly over and over again. People who are highly paid 1st round picks tend to get those because of the sunk cost fallacy. The backups often played as well or better when he got injured.

How many RBs do we have on the Roster? Just 5? Marco, Mathews, Sprolez, Barner and Mosert? Am I missing anyone? THIS IS A PROBLEM for me!!!
    ..
I do NOT want to see Marco, Mathews or Sproles in the preseason…Sproles knows this offense as a RB and WR,no reason to risk him in Preseason… demarco is a workout monster, very studious, he will be ready to roll in September, no need to risk him… Mathews is another pro bowl, franchose back, type veteran RB, no reason to expose him to hits in the preseason… I expect all 3 to be a big part of our pffense so Id rather not expose them to meaningless hits…
    ..
if Barner and !Mostert can’t Handle the entire workload, then Give GJ KINNEY snaps at RB,… We could also give Burton RB snaps, but with Ertz out. The Athletic Burton will have to fill Ertz role.
    .,
Every week that passes, more and more I feel like GJ KINNEY has a better shot to make the roster then we think.. His value is his versatility. So might as well put that on display, give him RB snaps to not risk any of our veteran 3 headed Monster… I do NOT root for KINNEY making the roster, I have NEVER seen him play anything but QB so I have no clue what he can do at WR, RB, ST but I can’t shake this gut feeling that he could sneak on to the Roster…. As long as our Coach comtinues to Prioritize Versatility and ST play when selecting our Backups, I feel like KINNEY might have a better shot then we think. Unless chip wants to start dressing 3 QBs on game day…
    ..
I want to go into the season with 3 healthy, Scary RB weapons, where as the Cowboys wilI go into the season with Randle. McFadden and GUs all banged up with injuries….. Starting a money pool. Pick the day where Jerruh gives in and signs Ray Rice 😉

I not very familiar with him, but it’s going to be extremely hard for him to make this roster… I don’t think it completely out of the question that we keep 4 RBs, Chip said he would have Kept Polk as a 4th If he didn’t ask to be traded so I assume it’s not impossible for chip to keep 4 RBs… But Mostert IMO will have a very difficult time beating out Kenjon Barner for a roster spot.. I’m not a fan of Barner AT ALL, but I hear RAVE reviews about his ST play, and his ST versatility.. not only can he return kicks, but he can also be a gunner, and few other ST roles. And it sounds like chip values his ST versatility
    ..
Personally I only want to keep the 3 veteran RB… But i don’t think we can rule out keeping 4 RBs, but as stacked as we are, Mostert should be happy to make our Practice squad….

I really don’t want our RBs taking hits in the preseason. I do think it’s important that the offense play together during the dress Rehersal game 3, so I would give Marco, and mathews a few carries just to get their beak wet running out of shotgun in live game action…. But seriously I don’t want Marco or Mathews carrying the ball more then 7 times during the entire preseason.. We can count on Murray to be ready, he is a Pro’s Pro.. No reason to risk them

Mostert, Barner, Monangai hopefully will get 98% of the preseason carries.. And you can give KINNEY a few snaps at RB if you want to really show off his versatility..
    ..
I am NOT a GJ KINNEY fan, I won’t complain if they cut him today… With that said, I can’t shake this Gut feeling That he could make this roster
    ..
Everything we have seen from Kelly says that he is dead serious about valuing versatility and ST play when selecting our Backups and KINNEY is happy to play ST, and I doubt we have a player more versatile then a guy who can line up at WR, or RB. And Oh BTW, he happens to know chips offense inside out giving us an Emergency QB much better then last two seasons when a TE(James Casey) or WR (Brad smith) where counted on to be our #3 QB on game day..,
    ..
But the Real Key for GJ is he NEEDS to PROVE that he is one of the best 10 special teams players at training camp… I heard good things about him as a ST player, but I really have No clue how to rank him in terms of our ST depth chart…and it’s really not easy to make ST on THIS Roster. We have some real STUDS:
    1) Captain Gos (Maragos)
    2) Psycho Braman
    3) Tutu is said to be one of the best St players league wide
    4) Burton was Fantasto for us last year
    5) Prosnski was a stud.. We already had an awesome ST. For him to get picked up during the season and get a spot on what a.reasy was a good ST, and even managed to stand out tells you just how good he is at ST

I don’t know that you can, find too many teams league wide that have 5 ST players better then those 5 names… And we have plenty of other quality ST players. I assume jordan Hicks, ROWE will contribute with their athleticism…Kenjon Barner is said To be a versatile ST player.. I know that Fipp coached Nolan Carroll on ST in Miami, and I think Nolan could end up being Boykins replacement on punt coverage.. Couplin is said to be a nice ST player… And chip has also used starters in the past on ST like Jenkins, cary, BG
    ..
We are going to have a BIG TIME year on ST again… I HAVE NO CLUE how KINNEY ranks On our ST depth chart, but as good as our ST players are, if KINNEY makes the roster, I assume he will have earned it,.

Having experience with this annoying injury and from the sound of it, seems like Zack Ertz could play Sunday if he really wanted to and that this is more of a prevention precaution then a necessity…. If he still has time to get this Taken care of and still be ready for the opener, it makes sense to take care of it..no?

It was a minor tear. No worry, he’s gonna ball come Game 1.

  296. 296 Media Mike said at 7:20 PM on August 14th, 2015:

He needs to “ball” with about 70% of the snaps this year. I’m tired of seing Ertz’s stats held down by the 5 million dollar clown Celek and his 32-340-1 garbage stat line. How the F is that winning people any cash?

  298. 298 Media Mike said at 7:25 PM on August 14th, 2015:

  299. 299 Tumtum said at 10:05 PM on August 14th, 2015:

Blame Ertz not Celek. He hindered my fantasy season too.

  300. 300 TypicalDouche said at 7:33 PM on August 14th, 2015:

So Celek is a clown soley because Ertz cannot overtake him in the blocking category? That’s a little stong brother. Celek has been the upmost professional since hes been an Eagle. It shouldn’t take Ertz over 2 years to become the adequate blocker Chip desires. I put the blame more on Ertz then Celek.

  301. 301 Media Mike said at 7:34 PM on August 14th, 2015:

One of the better examples imho of Kelly and co. overvaluing less talented veterans with great work ethics. I love Celek, but that doesn’t mean I think he should start over Ertz. Same with Kendricks and Demeco or last season, Cole and Graham.

  307. 307 Greg Richards said at 7:53 PM on August 14th, 2015:
