Busy Tuesday

The Eagles don’t play a game game until next Monday, but that doesn’t mean things are quiet on the Eagles front. Nothing huge happened, but lots of little things.

First up…OG Andrew Gardner was given a 3-year contract extension. Chip Kelly still doesn’t seem to want to publicly commit to Gardner as the starting RG, but he’s willing to commit to Gardner financially. Odd. Maybe now that the season is upon us, Kelly will finally refer to Gardner as the starter at RG. I don’t really get why he’s been so reluctant to do that the past couple of weeks. It has been clear for a while that Gardner won the job.

What about money?

That makes sense. Gardner isn’t a guy you commit a lot of money to. And I don’t think you can look at him as a 3-year answer at RG. In a fantasy world, you find someone better for RG and Gardner is your top OT/OG off the bench.

Gardner had a solid showing as a starter last year. He’s played better this summer, as he’s gotten a chance to embrace the role of being the RG. Kudos to Gardner for taking advantage of the opening at RG. Matt Tobin is the guy the team wanted there (he’s younger). Gardner outplayed him and won the job cleanly. Beyond that. Gardner has played well. Even PFF gave him a good grade for his work this summer.

Sadly, the Chris Pantale era is over. Apparently he never signed with the Eagles.

They did add TE Andrew Gleichert to the practice squad. He spent the spring and summer with the Eagles. Has some potential as a blocker.

* * * * *

The Eagles tried out QBs Josh Johnson and Thad Lewis. We can’t make too much of this. Could be simple information-gathering since both players are on the street. Could also mean the team has a very tenuous commitment to Stephen Morris.

Johnson played well against the Eagles in the preseaon finale. He is a very good athlete who makes plays with his legs. He has some throwing ability, but is not a polished passer. Johnson has five career starts, having played in the league since 2009.

Lewis has been in the league since 2011 and has six career starts. He played for Pat Shurmur in Cleveland back in 2012. Lewis went to Duke, where he was groomed by QB guru David Cutcliffe. Lewis isn’t special in any way, but is fundamentally sound.

Morris is a better developmental prospect than either of these QBs, but they do have starting experience if the Eagles ever get to a position where they need that.

Weird news out of Pittsburgh.

Boykin is a good slot corner so this is highly surprising. Maybe the Steelers are just using Allen inside due to his size…this is a matchup thing. Or maybe Boykin just didn’t play well enough for them.

I want Boykin to do well in Pittsburgh. First, he’s a good guy. I want him to succeed. Second, it benefits the Eagles. And I’m selfish for wanting the higher pick.

This isn’t exactly validation for Chip Kelly. Boykin would be the slot corner if he were here and that position would not be such a mystery. Still, Kelly caught a lot of flak for the perception that he didn’t give Boykin any chance to win an outside job. Boykin obviously didn’t light it up for the Steelers and is taking a step back rather than actually pushing for a starting job.

This is just the start of a long season so Boykin has plenty of time left to win back the job and show he deserves to keep it.

Boykin News… WOW! Steelers gave Cortez Allen a gang of money last yr, only to bench him for terrible play by mid season, which really makes this move even more crazy. With the new DC out there dealing with the pressure to live up to Dick Lebeau, he may be panicking ahead of his debut on national tv against angry Tom. He needs to chill out and stick Boyking on Edleman.

I had heard Boykin was up for the Outside job. Maybe they told him they wanted him in the slot, when he thought he was finally getting his chance Outside, and he reacted badly and got demoted even further… IDK, but it sucks for the kid

  2. 2 James Adair said at 11:02 AM on September 9th, 2015:

IMHO – I think Boykin is highly overrated. He consistently got beat in the pre-season on the outside by guys who were eventually cut. I think most of his interceptions were QBs throwing it up for grabs under pressure to whoever the short guys was covering.

  3. 3 Sam Morey said at 10:02 PM on September 8th, 2015:

Appearantly William Gay won the slot job over Boykin, which is inconceivable to me. No way this is a whole season thing.

Depth charts right now are basically useless, except for establishing who gets into the games first.

The first 4 games of each season are all about last year. Starting week 5, teams begin to adapt to what’s actually happening, and how it differs than the old off-season plans…

totally new scheme, probably backup until he learns playbook, and scheme becomes natural (hopefully).

  5. 5 eagleyankfan said at 7:51 AM on September 9th, 2015:

I’m going to disagree here(and with all posts) about “totally new scheme, playbook etc etc etc.
    …..
Boykin has been there long enough to know what’s expected of him. I’ll give him credit for being not being a slow learner. If a coach knows what kind of potential he has(in what is pretty much a veteran), sitting him on the bench at this point doesn’t help. He’s not going to get better in practices and he doesn’t have preseason games to ‘get better’. CK made him expandable for a reason. Steelers coaches are dropping him on the depth chart.
    …..
There are reasons why coaches from separate teams are seemingly having the same opinion of Boykin.
    …..
Is the Eagles compensation dependent on the percentage of play by Boykin? Just something to think about. Although, I doubt it’s that…

  6. 6 Corry said at 7:55 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Boykin has to play more than 60% of the snaps for the pick to become a 4th. That’s not it though. Coaches want to win and win now. If Boykin was the best corner on the team, he’d be starting.

  7. 7 eagleyankfan said at 7:57 AM on September 9th, 2015:

    Agreed 100%.

  8. 8 A_T_G said at 11:10 PM on September 8th, 2015:

Related to Morris not looking to buy a house just yet, the Giants have already cut both of their waiver claims, Nix and someone.

  9. 9 anon said at 12:26 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Guess those knee issues are no lie. Think given time it takes to get used to practice and character reasons it’s hard for us to just cycle through guys.

  10. 10 GEAGLE said at 8:54 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Giants keep bringing guys in and cutting them a day later… They did it with safetie stevie brown too

  11. 11 sprawl said at 11:11 PM on September 8th, 2015:

Eagles didn’t just get rid of Barkley + Tebow as the backups, they got rid of GJ Kinne as their practice squad guy and might just need to replace him ASAP for however they run their practices.

  12. 12 eagleyankfan said at 7:43 AM on September 9th, 2015:

“I doubt Chip wants to change that” — CK is always evolving. CK isn’t A, B, C my way. It’s A, evaluate A, B, evaluate B etc. If Kinne etc aren’t here, it’s because CK deemed them not needed…

  13. 13 ian_no_2 said at 8:57 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Chip said in his last presser he wanted three QBs tops. I assume he wants to keep the coaches focused on fewer guys.

  14. 14 sprawl said at 9:48 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Oh that’s interesting. I’m used to seeing the warmups where it seems like they get everyone with any arm strength on the field to try to toss a football to someone but it makes sense that they wouldn’t want to confuse things with a practice squad guy thinking they are competing with a 3rd string QB on the roster

  15. 15 ICDogg said at 10:07 AM on September 9th, 2015:

If that’s all they need, they can just hire an intern to do it

  16. 16 wee2424 said at 11:32 PM on September 8th, 2015:

Wow. Didn’t see that coming out of Pittsburgh. I really thought with their cover scheme he would win one of the outside spots, especially with their lack of CB talent. At worst I figured he would without a doubt win the slot job. Really surprising.

Like Tommy said, it’s very early in the process. He could be in the slot or even outside after week 1. That being said you can’t help but wonder if as a fan base we had him over rated.

  17. 17 TheTazmanianDevil said at 11:47 PM on September 8th, 2015:

I’m pretty sure he will win the job at some point and start for them for the rest of the year. Matter of time to me.
New guy, new scheme, and it is natural that the new coach will first give a chance to the guys who were there before
I like him too, with patience he will thrive.

  18. 18 GEAGLE said at 7:28 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Yup… I wouldn’t make a big deal about him not starting for them, Steelers corners are trash, Boykin will be starting soon.. After what Brady will do to the steelers candy bar secondary, Boykin will be starting in no time

  19. 19 FairOaks said at 9:24 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Probably right after he can’t get to the 60% of snaps portion of the trade 😉 Might even help his case to not have tape of him getting burned by Brady. Maybe he just doesn’t know their schemes well enough yet.

  23. 23 Ark87 said at 11:57 PM on September 8th, 2015:

So…do the sealers want to undo the trade? Everyone wins?

  24. 24 Baloophi said at 1:44 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Lots of talk about the two players targeting the referee in that Texas high school football game but perhaps the real tragedy is how the QB didn’t keep the ball on the read. Looks like he would’ve had a lot of room on the right side of the field. I’m looking forward to the Chip Wagon breakdown of this failed inside zone read and D3FB’s thoughts on the O-Line performance…

  25. 25 A_T_G said at 6:26 AM on September 9th, 2015:

To me, this was just the next logical progression following the Suggs hit on Bradford. It is not the safeties job to determine if that official has the ball or not.

  26. 26 A_T_G said at 6:22 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Are we sure Boykin was agreeable to the slot? Is it possible that part of the trade was Boykin saying he wanted to play outside, and therefore didn’t practice the slot?

  27. 27 Anders said at 6:56 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Boykin has 3 years of NFL experience and a couple of years college experience there, he shouldnt need it

  28. 28 bill said at 8:10 AM on September 9th, 2015:

I read ATG as questioning Tommy’s assertion that Boykin would have addressed the mystery at slot for the Eagles right now, not whether Boykin knows how to play slot. But it is ATG, so I might have missed a joke/sarcasm.

  29. 29 A_T_G said at 8:36 AM on September 9th, 2015:

    No, no jokes this time.

I actually assumed that your interpretation was true, and that it prompted the trade. I was wondering if that extended to his new team.

Is it possible that Boykin made clear to the coaches in Pittsburgh that he wanted to compete for an outside job and was not interested in the nickel spot? As a result, he overplayed his hand (kind of like Mathis) and now is in the doghouse with his new team?

The experience factor is certainly in his favor, but as a coach, would you give the job to a guy from another team that came to you because he was unhappy with the nickel job, used #justanickel, and wanted to go to a new team rather than accept that role?

  30. 30 Poppi said at 6:48 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Boykin’s highest value seemed to be on special teams, but he shouldn’t be missed there. Third string QB is usually for emergencies to keep us in games when the first two are out – not a developmental project, but is Chip’s approach different?

  31. 31 Anders said at 6:55 AM on September 9th, 2015:

For most teams the 3rd QB is a development guy because if you are down two, no crappy third string veteran will help you anyway

  32. 32 GEAGLE said at 7:25 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Boykin will be starting shortly for the steelers. That steelers secondary is trash? Won’t take Boykin long to win the outside corner job, especially after what Brady is going to do to Cortez and the other Pittsburg Pigeon Corners.. And even if he only settles into their nickel role, steelers Nickel played 60% snaps last year
    ..
Wouldn’t over react to Boykin starting off as the #4. Won’t take him long to climb gnat depth chart. The steelers secondary is trash

  33. 33 Anders said at 7:31 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Steelers nickle CB last year played less snaps than Boykin last year

Also if the CBs are so trash, why havnt he beaten em out yet?

  34. 34 GEAGLE said at 8:43 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Lol as if boykin will remain the #4 all year… Get real

  35. 35 Anders said at 9:15 AM on September 9th, 2015:

here did I say that? I just said that if he was as good as people pretend, he wouldnt be the 4th guy

  36. 36 GEAGLE said at 12:27 PM on September 9th, 2015:

Lol ok… A 4th -5th round pick for an expiring contract says the valued him like a GOOD player…

  38. 38 GEAGLE said at 2:25 PM on September 9th, 2015:

Yeah that’s the most we have gotten from a mid round pick in 3 years… Hopefully next year we,find a gem in rounds 4 or 5

  39. 39 BobSmith77 said at 10:42 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Kind of mystified that Gay has managed to stay in the NFL this long and maintain a starting job.

  40. 40 Cafone said at 11:18 AM on September 9th, 2015:

I think you are missing one thing: Boykin isn’t very good. He had one decent year and then got overhyped by Birds fans looking for anything positive about their secondary. Unfortunately for Boykin, he bought into that hype.

  41. 41 Corry said at 7:47 AM on September 9th, 2015:

The Steelers are also switching to more cover-2 looks, so Boykin could be struggling with that after playing mostly man. I think Boykin is talented enough that he’ll be able to take a starting job or at least move up to #3.

  42. 42 eagleyankfan said at 7:56 AM on September 9th, 2015:

I’m not sure I’ve seen so much hub-bub(technical term) about a 3rd string QB. Egads. If we’re watching a 3rd qb play, we’ll be guessing which top 5 pick we’ll be getting in next years draft. Hopefully with the start of the season this week we can move on from what garbage 3rd string qb is/isn’t here…

  43. 43 BlindChow said at 9:56 AM on September 9th, 2015:

    If we’re watching a 3rd qb play…

Ugh, I keep hearing this bunk repeated ad infinitum here.

We saw our 3rd QB play in 2013. It happens. If Barkley had played one extra game, we wouldn’t have made the playoffs. A 3rd string veteran might have given us a chance in the one game Barkley did play.

Plus, the Cardinal’s 3rd stringer played last year, didn’t he? A more competent QB and maybe they make the playoffs themselves.

If you don’t like talking about a 3rd QB, just skip the article. But don’t talk like it couldn’t possibly make a difference during the season.

  44. 44 Michael Winter Cho said at 12:59 PM on September 9th, 2015:

Huh? Eaglesyanksfan is right. All 3rd QBs suck and will torpedo your season, unless you get TomBradyintheSixthRound lucky. While you’re at it, don’t let your kickers all get hurt and have your linebacker kick extra points, either. But if your QB has a good leg, you can let him punt.

  49. 49 GEAGLE said at 9:04 AM on September 9th, 2015:

  50. 50 EagleNebula said at 9:51 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Personally, I am more interested in Banners assessment of Chip the talent evaluator than Boykins status. Banner has no reason to give undue praise, and considering how he left the Eagles/lost out on the Kelly lottery, I take his words to be an honest opinion from someone who ran the scouting department of a Super Bowl bound team… In other words, it reinforces my confidence in Chip the GM.

  51. 51 Cafone said at 9:59 AM on September 9th, 2015:

I don’t know if we can consider Banner to be an impartial observer. I’m pretty sure he hates Howie Roseman for taking his job in Philly. And he hates him even more for winning the Chip Kelly sweepstakes which pretty much ended Banner’s tenure in Cleveland. His praise of the Eagles post-Roseman may be genuine, or it may just be a way of taking shots at Howie.

    ..

That secondary sucks! Every move is temporary because none of them are good enough to hold on to their starting spot all year.,.boykin time will come, the question then becomes can his play bring stability to the position or will he struggle and force the DB game of musical chairs to continue,…

I was comparing Johnson and Lewis around a week or so ago and Johnson has the deep arm, while Lewis’ arm is limited but he excels at the crossing patterns and the wheel routes. They can both run the read option draws. Johnson is 29 and Lewis is younger.. both you’d think are entering their prime. I decided I preferred Johnson.

  61. 61 CrackSammich said at 9:02 AM on September 9th, 2015:

It would not be a totally unreasonable theory to think that that Steelers would not rush Boykin into their system precisely because it would push them below the 60% playing time number.

  62. 62 CrackSammich said at 9:06 AM on September 9th, 2015:

People below saying that the Steelers only played 60% snaps in nickle last year. Seems to me that the trade is basically saying that if he’s an outside corner, he’s worth a 4th. If he’s a slot guy, he’s only worth a 5th.

  63. 63 Avery Greene said at 9:36 AM on September 9th, 2015:

This is an interesting point. Let’s hope he gets some time on the outside when they play against smaller receivers, but splits time at the nickel on obvious passing downs.

A not so crazy idea: they could sign Lewis or Johnson next Thursday, when their salary won’t be guar. for the whole season, cut Morris (probably no one will claim him, most of the roster moves are done then) and sign him to the PS.

Eagles wouldn’t be the first team to do business like that with veterans (the longer you’re in the league, the higher the vet minimum is, afaik). And I know I’ve seen that on Hard Knocks a few times, with the GM telling the veteran player exactly why they cut him and try to sign him after week 1, if he’s available then.

Exactly, and the explanation praises the Cowboys for letting their work horse RB leave as “proof” anyone can gain yards (clearly he doesn’t understand what the word proof means). Prisco or PFT. That sounds just PFT. Don’t read prisco. I generally don’t read any national media. Somehow they never seem to have a good grasp of things. They are always on flavor on the month team bandwagons.

So many people are predicting a huge year for Baltimore. I just don’t see it.. Steve Smith has already announced his retirement in 2016, their top two draft picks haven’t played all summer , and continue to not play. They got rid of Nagta who has been a force when healthy all through his career. Tory Smith walked., Denniis Pitta is made of glass, Forsette is sure to regress to the mean at least some. Suggs is still out of shape. Their secondary is already hurt. Kamar Aiken with a whopping 267 yards in a 3 year career is their number two wide out.

I’m just a schmuck but I feel like Cleveland has as good a shot at that division as any of the teams in it.

That’s one of the great things about football, you can prognosticate for months on end, but eventually the games are played and you see where things really stand.

One of the lame things about football, or at least football journalism, is that people who are comically, hilariously wrong rarely own up to it.

The first month is always a complete crapshoot including the lines in Vegas which really don’t settle until mid-Oct (week 5 or 6).

  94. 94 EagleNebula said at 10:42 AM on September 9th, 2015:

Just take the odds on the Eagles which notably jumped & improved after this preseason game especially the 3rd preseason game.

Nevermind there is actually a slight negative correlation between scoring in the preseason and regular season scoring & that there is almost no positive correlation between preseason records and the regular season.

That is awesome. Certainly it could be argued that it is untested, since none of the changes are proven commodities, but saying that 3/4 new personnel and a new coach is nothing is just wrong.

  101. 101 Patrick said at 12:32 PM on September 9th, 2015:

Jesus christ, its like they’re not even trying. Heres a couple of logical arguments to be made for Julio to have a monster game.

Julio is a monster, Maxwell will not be as good without the Legion of Boom, Jenkins is overrated by Eagles fans, Thurmond and Carroll haven’t proven themselves to be the answers leaving out secondary with 2/4 players OK, it takes time to get a good secondary together, it takes time for players to know each other. All are good arguments that you can’t really make a big fuss about. Julio Jones could very well have a monster game against us.

Heres and argument you cannot make: The team that signed the no.1 FA cornerback who just happened to be a great scheme fit and signed a injury prone but formerly very skilled CB, then drafted a CB in the 2nd round, all while finding a new DBs coach and moving on from 3/4 players in the secondary. That team has done nothing to improve their secondary.
One could also mention that we were in the mix for McCourty at safety, but well just short.

LOGIC MOTHERFUCKERS! Start applying it and good things will happen. Stupid fucking analyst, its not that they’re not even trying, its that they are actually trying to be stupid on purpose.

Eventually, I convinced myself that his coach from Marshall probably knew best.

Clearly I was mistaken. It is now apparent that I knew best all along. I will be making my career counseling services available (for a fee) to readers. I will talk to Tommy about putting a button up there next to his Donate button.

Mac gets to finally play the Z-receiver spot in the West Coast offense (that’s the spot that gets the free release because he’s off the ball and gets to motion all the time), he played X here when DeSean was here playing the Z spot. That means he’s already a lock for 120 targets in an offense that doesn’t have many other receiving threats, particularly at WR.
All reports out of KC have Andy going bonkers trying to come up with ways to get Maclin involved in the game. They’re even putting him in the backfield at RB. They’re running reverses with him, they’re motioning him all over the place and making him the focal point of the offense.
Everything is pointing in the direction of him having another big year. The only possible downside is that Alex Smith sucks. But, I guarantee he won’t go another year without throwing a TD to a WR. You can bank on that.

  169. 169 Avery Greene said at 1:08 PM on September 9th, 2015:

No, but there was a run on QBs in the late teens and twentys. Because I pick so much later, I wanted to make sure I got him.

Another guy took the Eagles defense simply because they play the Skins twice a year (I’m in DC). That was in Round 10, when I was going to pull the trigger.

The plan is to take it out @6. I’m buying the meat on Sunday so I don’t know the cook time yet. If it’s larger than 4 lbs, I may work from home and start tailgating at 4. If I work from home, I’ll throw wood chips in the oven, if not, then the meat goes without the chips, and I’ll use liquid smoke.

  180. 180 RobNE said at 2:07 PM on September 9th, 2015:

nice work. I got a Weber vertical smoker that works pretty well but smoking pulled pork has taken me 12 hours, and it’s an all day affair. When I get impatient I finish it in the oven, but then last time it leaked all over and took me a week to clean and I got in “trouble”. So I’m taking a break until I have a really free day again.

  181. 181 Avery Greene said at 2:08 PM on September 9th, 2015:

QB – Ryan Tannehill, Matt Stafford
RB – CJ Anderson, Jeremy Hill, Alfred Morris, Darren Sproles
WR – Antonio Brown, Golden Tate, Julian Edelman, John Brown Markus Wheaton
TE – Martellus Bennett, Jordan Cameron

Most teams and fanbases would give ANYTHNG to have to this type of roster health.

It’s an evolution not a revolution.

We seemed to have planned Bradfords rehab/recovery perfectly, he was scheduled to be back August 1st and he hasn’t had any setbacks.. It’s amazing that Demeco will be on the field Monday, much quicker then his first ACL surgery/recovery…
    ..
Call it sports science, call it normal NFL training staffs, but not all pro training staffs are created equal. For example in basketball, the Suns training staff is one of the gold standards…. The Trainers of this current Eagle regime have been doing a fantastic job according to our health compared to that of average NFL teams… Hopefully we remain at the top of the health curve, whether it’s luck, sports science or black magic

Marcus is back at practice if im not mistaken. This isn’t just about improving our OLB depth, part of it is also about finding ways to get such a talented player on the field more then past years… He can handle the OLB 3rd down responsibility easily, because they usually become 4-3DEs… He just has to grow into first and 2nd down OLB role….. But come 3rd down, I’m sure we will continue to move him around attacking numerous offensive lineman with his explosive pass rush
    ,,
Adding OLB to Vinnys resume makes it easier to pay him what it will take to keep him in philly..

  243. 243 D3FB said at 2:45 PM on September 9th, 2015:

I think it has more to do with the DL.

They’ve got 6 guys who are really solid and are all 2 gappers. They have all earned PT. They’ve got Mikhalik on the PS who they can call up if we get dinged up.

There is no longer a need to have Vinny moonlight as a 2gapper. He’s a pass rusher that you can line up anywhere across the front. He’ll get more work on his pass rushing at OLB than DL.

OLB doens’t have anywhere near that depth. MSII has probably earned reps, but not so much so that you feel supremely confident with him as the only backup. Braman is ST only, Jones can do it but doesn’t offer much more than a warm body.

I don’t know that they want Vinny out there dropping in coverage for a ton of snaps, but a combination of Vinny/MSII would be capable as a replacement if one one of the starters goes down. Vinny can still be used as a DL in sub packages.

  244. 244 Sean Stott said at 2:50 PM on September 9th, 2015:

  247. 247 D3FB said at 2:57 PM on September 9th, 2015:

When we go nickel we line up 4-2-5 and the OLB become hand down rushers. That group will likely be mainly Graham, Cox, Logan, Barwin, but Curry can play either one of the DE spots or Nascar DT.

He’s still a full time OLB but like I said they can kick him inside on rushing downs to get mismatches.

You say Bramen is special teams only, and he is, but there were some questions during the preseason about him. When he is on the field against the scrubs, he is a monster. Do you see enough there to give him a shot against starters?

  252. 252 D3FB said at 6:32 PM on September 9th, 2015:

Maybe, but I don’t think it would be much more than a small handful in an emergency situation.

I think they want him fully rested for the 35-40 special teams snaps game.

He’s 28, 6’5 250lbs and physically gifted, so you have to take him trashing UDFA rookie camp bodies with a grain of salt. You’d imagine that if they felt the reps would translate somebody would have played him more in meaningful minutes before now.

I don’t think they will use him much if at all on actual defense this year because he probably is much more of just a warm body against NFL starters and you worry about it affecting his special teams.

  290. 290 TypicalDouche said at 2:56 PM on September 9th, 2015:

Hopefully its more of a matchup thing, by that I mean if they go B-Max shadowing Julio all game then when ATL goes into 3 or 4 WR sets maybe Nolan covers the slot and Rowe can “hopefully” handle Roddy White or whoever else is in front of him.

Well if that’s the case then I would think they leave Nolan outside and let Bigs handle the slot. Obviously I am no coach and they clearly see something we don’t but I really don’t want to rush Rowe’s development or hamper his confidence by sticking him outside too early into his rookie season.

  293. 293 GEAGLE said at 3:49 PM on September 9th, 2015:

I don’t think we will see Maxwell shadowing in week 1, but who knows,
    ..
ideally the Falcons line up Julio in front of Nolan That way we can stick a safety over top and Bracket Coverage Julio, while Maxwell takes on Roddy man to man …
    ..
The Falcons OL is a mess, so they probably can’t go 4 wide against us which im sure teams will try to test our Nickel and Dime corners… But Atlanta won’t be able to test us much that way because their OL can’t block our front. they will need to keep Tight Ends and RBs in to block so that Matt Ryan doesn’t get killed… I expect to shut down those average at best RBs, make the one dimensional while our offense keeps scoring, pressuring them to throw 50 times, so I think our Defenses will do great against them, but when we get a big league and go to prevent, Julio will get a bunch of yards in garbage TIme

  294. 294 D3FB said at 3:00 PM on September 9th, 2015:

It likely means that Carrol kicks inside in nickel sets and Rowe comes on.

It would be in third and long situations and he’ll be have the advantage of knowing where the sticks are. Plus letting him play outside plays to his strengths. He can either get up in the WR face and play him in press knowing he had S help or if he’s in off he can sit at the sticks and force them to throw short and then make the tackle.

This offense has been putting up 25-30 points every single game since Chip got here. And, last year we saw that continue despite a faltering run game and QBs who couldn’t consistently hit wide open receivers.
I kept thinking last year, how many points could we consistently put up, if we had a QB that could hit wide open targets on a regular basis? I think this year we’re gonna find out and the rest of the league should be terrified.

Nothing from last year needed to change except for having a QB that could consistently throw the ball with mild accuracy to wide open targets that seemed to appear on every single play. Now we seemingly have that, along with a running game that just keeps churning out positive yards. This offense could be record setting.

I like that Bradfords first game in years is against a simple defense he should be familiar with assuming the head coach brought the simplistic seattle defensive system to the Falcons.. Bradford got a twice a year front row view of the seattle Defense.. Hopefully he is a little more comfortable then he would be against a complicated Bellichek defense… Let him ease back in against Atlanta and Dallas defense missing McClain, Hardy and Scandrick before our offense has to step it up a level against a quality Jets defense that has corners capable of taking our outside WR’s out of the game without safety help..
    ..
Atlanta is an Inferior roster and for the most part Chjp has made sure we beat the teams we are supposed to beat. We got away from that against the skins at the end of the year, hopefully we handle our business against Atlanta.. An inferior roster like atlanta probably needs to force a couple turnovers and get big boost from their Special teams… Keep Devin Hester return game in check, and take care of the ball, and it should be very, difficult for atlanta to beat us, even if their fans DONT realize they are a 6 win team yet… That Falcon OL is in trouble against Cox and the front 7. They will have to keep TEs and Rbs in to block all game..

From the article by Maclin’s agent:

As Reid, quarterbacks Alex Smith and Chase Daniel and receivers coach
David Culley were calling Maclin that day, “making him feel like he’s
the greatest thing on Earth,” Parres said, Maclin could “barely get
(Eagles coach and de facto general manager) Chip Kelly to answer the
    phone.”

“He called Chip Kelly five times Saturday: ‘Chip, can you just show me anything?’ ” Parres recalled.

(At a news conference after Maclin left, Kelly said he had had a number of discussions with Maclin and said that “we couldn’t go as high as Kansas City.”).

That Sunday, while Maclin was on the golf course, the Eagles called and
countered by shifting money from year three of their offer to year two —
which contrary to Kelly and published reports made it close enough to
the same deal Maclin was offered with the Chiefs that Maclin was ready
    to stay.

As they stood on the 16th tee, Maclin’s initial thought was just that.
    Then Reid called again.
And 10 minutes later Maclin was Kansas City-bound.
“Itwasn’t the money; it was that 10 minutes,” Parres said. “Jeremy said, ‘(The Chiefs) just wanted me more, and I think that’s where I should be.’ ”

I think it’s smart(ish) to save that $10m by going with young receivers, but it’d be nice if he just called a spade a spade. It’d be interesting to know if Mac was called by other players on the team.

Good read. Time for some owners to start allowing coaching staffs to put rookie QBs into an apprenticeship system to learn how to play the right way because it seems way to many colleges are playing the game the wrong way.

If you get down to the Ray Farmer quote where he basically says it would be better to make QB a fungible position; you might throw up.

I have no desire to watch an NFL where every team has a rotate-a-QB system with some running loser as their QB.

And Cam’s rating has gone down each of his 4 years in the league. Couple that with the increased number of hits that have slowed him down as the years have gone on and you’re looking at a guy not long for the league.

His level of play hasn’t changed all that much. Not sure he’s ever going to be tons better, though he’s now being paid like they expect he will.

  390. 390 anon said at 7:53 PM on September 9th, 2015:

Problem is it’s super hard to be a pocket QB, part of that is the high school/pee wee and now college game where QB is more of an athlete than a distributor.

I think that’s related to the fact that there aren’t enough pro-style QBs for schools to field a pro-system, especially if you aren’t a powerhouse program.

If i was a qb recruit i’d want to go to a pro style offense so that i’m not just a bust / backup after i get drafted.

For one I’d rather watch both of those than a boring ass I-form WCO, or Marty Schotenheimer grind em into dust, throw a go route every 10 plays offense.

Additonally Tom Osborne called, Barry Switzer and the old ball coach both confrenced in and said offenses that don’t neccessarily translate to the pros aren’t anything new.

But if schools were still running a derivative of the veer as their base nobody would be bitching.

The move to the NFL being a passing league has only made the fact that there are a limited amount of QBs who can play the position at a high level more obvious, it’s not like in 1995 there was some great abundance of HOF QBs stuck as third stringers.

Hell even Nick Saban is running packaged plays.
