Up and Down

The Eagles fell to the Jets 24-18. This was only backups playing so it isn’t a big deal in terms of the big picture. But the Eagles got pushed around way too much on both sides of the ball. After the game, Chip Kelly wasn’t in the best of moods and basically said every player was up and down.

Was he mad at his team’s performance?

Was he frustrated with all the Tebow questions that came his way in the press conference?

Was he feisty because he knows that he’ll be ending the dreams of 22 players in the next 48 hours or so?

Whatever the reason, Kelly wasn’t happy. I think he should have been frustrated with his team. It seemed like the effort wasn’t really there for part of the game. The defense showed a spark in the 2nd half. NT Beau Allen started taking care of business. If not for some scrambles by QB Josh Johnson, the defense might have had a couple of more stops. Running QBs are deadly with a bunch of third string defenders on the field.

I don’t care about losing the game. That’s irrelevant. And I certainly don’t want to say that a sloppy performance by the backups is something to worry about. You just prefer the guys to play better than they did tonight. Not all of these guys will be working at WaWa next week.

Beau Allen is the backup NT. Some CB from this game will be part of the Nickel defense. Taylor Hart will likely be the backup LDE. Jordan Hicks might see snaps as a backup ILB. And so on. Some of these players will play meaningful snaps in real games. You can’t just ignore this game as meaningless.

I’ll watch the tape to see who played well and who didn’t.

As for Tebow, I ripped him on Twitter early in the game. That clearly inspired Timothy to pick his game up to try and make me look bad. He did play the best he has all summer. He threw some good passes and made some good reads.

That said, Tebow still was slow to make reads. There were times the offense did not look good. As Kelly will certainly conclude, Tebow was up and down. I was happy to see him show some progress.

Tebow is going to be the Eagles #3 QB. Accept it and move on. I’m not a fan of the move because I think Tebow’s limitations are fatal flaws. You don’t magically get someone to become a substantially better decision-maker. You don’t make someone a natural passer. Chip Kelly sees something I don’t. Chip is infinitely smarter than me in football matters so I defer to him. And I sure as heck hope he proves me embarrassingly wrong.

Matt Barkley will be moving on from the Eagles. He might be moving on from the NFL. Good idea, but it just didn’t work. Barkley always seemed to be a very hard worker. He just struggled with a world where he wasn’t the lead dog. I hope he goes somewhere and is able to turn things around. I doubt that happens because no matter what, arm strength is going to be an issue.

I’m sure many of you would like to read about Raheem Mostert. I’ll put up a post on him on Friday. He looked very good at times, but there are some issues. Still, I’m shocked that a role player from Purdue has looked this good this summer.

The optimist in me says Tebow was out of football a few years. Let him continue to learn to run the offense with tempo.
The pessimist in me says there’s a reason he was out of football.

  5. 5 Joe Minx said at 11:17 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

I can’t even take seriously his time with the Jets. That whole thing was a circus. And he wasn’t ever going to do anything in NE.

I look at him as the guy who just came off that win over the Steelers in Denver. He’s got talent. There are certainly issues, but maybe there’s still something that can be developed.

  6. 6 Greg Richards said at 11:14 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

If you were going to keep Mostert on the PS, since we already have 4 RBs I had the crazy idea of trying to develop him as a CB. He has WR experience so he should have knowledge of routes. He has speed and some physicality.

  7. 7 OregonDucker said at 11:46 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

Not a bad idea at all. Chip moved Barner the other way so he knows what to look for.

  8. 8 Greg Tulino said at 11:15 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

What concerns me the most is Eric Rowe. If he is going to be on the field in the nickel in week one and I am the Falcons I would attack him on every opportunity possible. I think Rowe will develop over time, but we can not afford to drop any games early due to him being afforded the time to make mistakes in games we have to win early on in the season.

  9. 9 Greg Richards said at 11:17 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

What Davis basically said is that they’ll mix and match. That if a team has a quicker, shifty slot WR they’d go with Biggers or Watkins. If it’s a bigger slot WR that you have to get physical with, they’d go with Rowe.

  10. 10 Insomniac said at 11:19 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

I believe Justin Hardy will be their starting slot receiver. Hardy is smooth and shifty as they come so Rowe would probably be the worst match up.

  11. 11 Greg Richards said at 11:20 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

I’m pretty sure Leonard Hankerson is their #3 WR. I don’t know if he plays the slot or if they shift one of their starting WRs(Jones, White) into the slot.

  12. 12 Insomniac said at 11:25 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

We still have a few days to figure things out. Hankerson would be a better match up for Rowe but honestly I don’t trust Rowe right now in the slot. He needs that sideline to work with.

  13. 13 JoeBlow said at 11:17 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

agreed, i would rather have Watkins starting there, if not him then Biggers…Rowe just isn’t ready for snaps on an NFL field

  14. 14 wee2424 said at 11:47 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

I don’t think it will be Rowe in slot. Biggers and Watkins while not lighting it up have performed better there. Rowe simply is not meant for the slot and I think it’s a big reason why they view him as a CB not a S.

  15. 15 Insomniac said at 11:17 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

Or how often do you hear the HEEEEEATH or KUHHNNN or even Luke fucking Wilson type of chant for a black player?

Starting to think that in certain 3 WR sets with a dominant receiver on the outside (Julio Jones) the Birds may bring Thurmond/Jenkins into the slot with our 3rd safety (whoever that is) playing top. Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but I think it’s a possibility. Comments?

  31. 31 OregonDucker said at 11:49 PM on September 3rd, 2015:

current ATL WR depth chart (1) Julio (2) Old Roddy (3) Leonard Hankerson. He’s like a Poor Man’s Homeless Harry Douglas.

Also, they have no TEs, no run game, and bad OL overall

IMO, the real test will be week 2, with (I can’t believe I’m saying this) Cole Beasley
    ——
and more to your question, I think yes, part of the reason Thurmond is at safety is to get him on the field. 4 best DBs. He can be safety or nickel if needed, especially if the ILBs are used more to cover TEs or slippery RBs

  34. 34 A_T_G said at 7:34 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Jenkins hinted at this a few weeks ago, saying it wasn’t about the three best corners but the five best defensive backs.

  36. 36 GEAGLE said at 8:41 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Yeah that’s it… ROWE can just learn the safety playbook in 4 days, excellent idea….smh

  37. 37 DJH said at 1:10 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Does the season consist of one game this year? Will Rowe’s career cease after week one? See where I’m going with this? smh

  38. 38 wee2424 said at 8:55 AM on September 4th, 2015:

He hasn’t practiced at S. I like him at CB, just not in the slot.

  39. 39 DJH said at 1:11 PM on September 4th, 2015:

So he could “eventually” be a corner or he could “eventually” be a safety. Many people think his physical abilities lend themselves better to safety. Time will tell. (And by time. I don’t mean next week.)

  40. 40 wee2424 said at 12:37 AM on September 5th, 2015:

Let me clarify. In this scheme I do not think he can become a full time safety due to the fact that I don’t think his skill set has the ability to to allow him to come down and cover the slot WR in a consistent effective basis. That is one of the biggest attributes we look for in our safeties.

On another team that does not require that skill on a very consistent basis I think he could be a good safety. That is simply why some teams view him as a safety but we do not.

He is an outside CB for us. That is his best position match on this team.

Next to QB the position of CB is by far the toughest position for a rookie. Look around the league and you will see that the vast majority of rookie CBs regardless of draft position struggle in coverage from past years to this year. Rookie CBs are simply expected to struggle. When I say that at some point he will be a good outside CB for us I do not mean that he is a long term project but simply he has to deal with the normal learning curve and struggle a rookie CB is going to deal with.

He has the physical tools. He has the character, work ethic, and smarts/coachability to be a good CB for us sooner rather then later.

He has shown promise and enough flashes at times to see that he will be a good player for us.

Like many rookie CBs the expectations for him were simply set to high by media members that don’t fully know what they are speaking about and fans that continuously ignore the history of rookie CBs.

I worry about the following players making it through to the practice squad, where I’d like to stash all of them:

Jerome Couplin–has great measurable athleticism, and has played well when on the field.

Rasheed Bailey–great strength, great hands, belongs in th league

Denzel Rice–probably the best CB other than the starters who played this pre-season. Measurable athleticism isn’t there, but he’s looked goodie pre-season

Daiheem Watkins–he seems to shed blocks very well, a big, tough athlete

Raheem Mostert–fast, runs hard, what’s not to like?

    Malcolm Bunche–played well, great size

Brian Mihalik–plays tough now, will be a monster after he lifts for a year

I know that Ajirotutu is a special teams player, but he’s a complete waste as a WR and I’d personally cut him and keep Bailey.

  42. 42 BlindChow said at 12:54 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Maehl is still PS eligible and probably won’t get poached.

  46. 46 xmbk said at 11:51 AM on September 4th, 2015:

It’s not a matter of keeping him around for development. Reliable, hard worker, solid on ST. Don’t think he’ll replace Tutu, but Bailey is more likely to go PS.

  47. 47 D3FB said at 9:32 AM on September 4th, 2015:

I think they all clear waivers.

Couplin- Has a skillset but played small school ball and probably needs another year before he’s pushing for much more than ST spot.

Bailey- The glut of WR talent to come out the last few years means there should be more intriguing and ready to contribute players.

Rice- I’d consider a fantom IR here. He needs time to develop but has shown enough that you would like to be able to do so. Can never have enough CB depth.

Watkins- There’s probably a half dozen or more guys that are young and I would have more interest in as developmental edge players.

Mostert- If he gets claimed it’s for his return ability. I don’t know that more compact classic run style games view him highly. Talent as a running back is pretty replaceable.

    Bunche- Phyiscally gifted underachiever.

Mikhalik- Probably only of interest to teams that run a 34 or a run stopping LDE. I think fantom IR best idea here, but not necessary.

  59. 59 ian_no_2 said at 8:21 AM on September 4th, 2015:

The 3rd QB that won the job for me tonight: Josh Johnson. He’s been a draft-head hero since he put up a 43-1 TD-INT ratio in the Pioneer League and he hasn’t had an extended trial recently. He sure showed he could run the read option and he’ll be on the street this weekend.

I agree with Tommy on Tebow 100%. If everything that’s been said about Kelly wanting Tebow is true, Tebow was the prize pupil showing his improvement at the end of the master class, but I’d prefer someone who can read a defense better.

Defending Barkley, it was not fun to watch his butterflies come back in this situation, because it doesn’t help his cause to show he’s not yet consistent and clutch. Before the draft, he had a press conference where he said the read option is not how teams win Super Bowls, just after Kelly was hired. Roseman talked about how much he liked him after they traded up in the 4th, and Kelly said he watched every snap in college, and I pleased a rival didn’t get him as I thought he’d be a steal but confused as to why Chip Kelly would draft him instead of a mobile QB. I still think the guy can be good but he could do well to play for a rebuilding team without a QB with lower pressure.

  60. 60 ian_no_2 said at 8:24 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Rowe was mostly a safety in college, which is what I said I thought the Eagles should draft him for. Then when they get him there’s “we’ll see what he can do at CB first.” When do they decide that’s not working?

  61. 61 A_T_G said at 8:44 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Honestly, my vote would be next year. CB is a hard position to learn. Rowe has been learning two CB positions. To play safety for us, one needs CB cover skills. All those things make me believe that learning to play CB this season is time well spent.

  62. 62 CrackSammich said at 8:59 AM on September 4th, 2015:

It looks to my extremely uneducated eye like he’s playing the inbreaking routes like a safety would. He sticks on their hip until they make their break, and then drops over top of them in a sort of zone, waiting to make the tackle. He probably just needs time to retrain his instincts.

  63. 63 ian_no_2 said at 9:43 AM on September 4th, 2015:

These are all interesting responses.. I think the best NFL CBs are generally advanced at coverage at college and then build on that. If Rowe can be a good NFL safety that’s what he should be, rather than telling him to tighten up, learn to press which he’s lost at, and not keep the play in front of him. Experience at safety is more important to a safety than experience at CB.

  64. 64 CrackSammich said at 9:59 AM on September 4th, 2015:

The way we use our safeties, he’s going to have to learn to cover at some point no matter what. Both Thurmond and Jenkins are used as slot corners, so it’s no surprise that the guys we see as CB/S-interchangeable (Watkins, Rowe) are being worked out as slot CBs early in their careers. I think currently, the staff sees Thurmond as the better safety right now, so perhaps they see this as his stepping stone, learning year.

  65. 65 D3FB said at 9:19 AM on September 4th, 2015:

He’s a better CB prospect than S. He has some angle/tackling issues similar to Damarious Randall. Additionally the processing speed and understanding of the defense is far more heavy for a S than a CB.

Worst case scenario if he’s still struggling in coverage next year then you can move him to S. He’ll have a better understanding of the playbook and all the time spent working on his cover skills will only serve as a benefit.

  66. 66 Media Mike said at 9:22 AM on September 4th, 2015:

And it seems like Rowe’s only problem(s) are related to hands/feet at the LOS and what Mayock was saying about getting too deep on routes in coverage.

Seems like coaching could correct that in a hurry.

I don’t want Rowe active a lot early, but I think he’ll be great next year.

  67. 67 Michael Winter Cho said at 9:50 AM on September 4th, 2015:

  69. 69 Media Mike said at 9:55 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Well, in theory, Maxwell is better than Cary. Thurmond is better than Allen. Carroll is better than Fletcher. New slot starter will be worse than Boykin.

The poor play was mostly backups.

Should always expect some serious ups and down out of rookie corners… rookie corners have no business on the field, even worse a kid who played one year of Corner, and at the beginning of August was moved to the slot where he never played before..
    ..
Eric RoWE sucked last night. I expect him to suck most of this year because Thas what rookie corners do, even the ones drafted in the top 10…but I’m not concerned,. ROWE will grow into a quality starting corner, it’s just not going to happen as a rookie..
    ..
Unfortunately I live in a ridiculuos city filled with some really dumb fans and media members, so I can’t wait to start hearing all the morons talk shit because our 2nd round pick can’t play as a rookie lol…you know it’s coming! This FANBASE can’t help itself.. How long TIL we start hearing fans rip chip for drafting a corner in round 2 who can’t play right away?..
    ..
Like all corners, it’s not going to be a pretty rookie year. I prefer sitting a rookie corner on the bench all year… As bad as RoWE will look as a rookie, I have zero concerns with that kid, he is going to be a stud, but the instant gratification whores will start to rip this kid, especially if Jaylen watkins ends up playing ahead of him
    ..
Can’t wait Til chip builds a program so deep, that no rookies will be able to crack the starting lineup… Can’t wait Til we are so deep that all rookies spend at least half the year on the bench, fans and Media would blow a gasket…

I’m not in favor of carrying either QB. Most importantly, neither earned a roster spot. And if you’re down 2 QB’s, the difference between surviving a half with Tebow vs Marcus Smith handing the ball off or some ish, and picking a guy up off the streets (what’s Dennis Dixon up to?) to run a stripped-down offense until someone comes back if needed, seems practically negligible. Use the roster spot somewhere else.

  77. 77 A_T_G said at 8:52 AM on September 4th, 2015:

If we get to the point where we need to rely on the third QB, we should just draw names of fans in attendance to play a series. It will keep the fan base engaged until the injuries pass.

Hear your name, sign the waiver, suit up. And with the size and speed of defenders, it is possible a third of the stadium would get an opportunity.

Anddddd his fifteen yard throw was a dying duck.

And he got decapitated by the DE.

I wouldnt be shocked if Barkley was out of the NFL this season, not latching on with a team til next years OTAs/Training camp..
    ..
So dissapointed in Barkley. I never liked him, I never had faith in him, but for someone who has been groomed in this same offense for 3 summers, he should be Embarressed that he didn’t wipe the floor with Tebow, the least talented QB in the NFL who learned the offense 5 months ago… Even if Barkley won a close battle, it would have been a failure.. Barkley needed to show to be a level above TEBOW, instead he let tim friggin TEBOW out play him in a big game with their careers on the line… What a disgrace. Barkley made it so we probably can’t get a 3rd string center in return for him…
    ..
Embarressing that we spent 3 Summers grooming this kid, and he still looks just as Horrible as he did as a rookie… I didn’t need Barkley to be Great, but I needed him to look much improved, and in total command of this offense… And he didn’t even come close to performing at an acceptable level..

There is never any accepting and moving on until after a clearly stupid move, like keeping Tebow on the the roster this year, has proven to be benign and we’ve gotten somebody/something else.

I don’t care if we’re talking Tebow, taking open access training camp at a college campus away, taking away our real uniform colors, drafting Mamula over Sapp………………………..there is no over. Right is right and if it it isn’t right, it’ll be spoken about when it needs to come up. No need to bring up Tebow every day, but if he has to play in a game due to injuries to Bradford and Sanchez or if he snakes points away from better players on 2pt gimmicks, it’ll need to be said that keeping Tebow was wrong.

  89. 89 EagleNebula said at 9:28 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Keeping Tebow over Barkley is right. If those are your options and no other acceptable QB is available, then having him on the 53 is right. Having him active on game day to run a 2 point conversion would be wrong, but that’s a different decision.

OL going to be the 5 starters, Dennis Kelly, Tobin and whoever they think is the best backüp center..
    ..
marcus and Ertz won’t go on PUP, doubt they need 7 more weeks to get healthy.. Dont really care if Ertz plays against the Falcons.. Don’t need him to hang 40 on that pathetic defense, plus I see us running the ball like 35-40 times against the Falcons… Which will be remembered as the Stampede bowl where we blow a team out mostly trampling them in the run game, barely attempting many passes…
    ..
The Only surprise I think We might end up seeing is only keeping 9 DBs instead of 10… But with 2 DBs Maragos and Prosinsi only being ST players, even if we keep 10, it’s like we only have 8 because we don’t want Maragos or Pros playing defense…
    ..

  98. 98 Media Mike said at 9:20 AM on September 4th, 2015:

All off season I saw a guy trying to transcend what he’s always been by breaking himself down and building up from scratch. It didn’t take. I saw a guy last night revert back to old Tebow. Slow in his reads? he was staring down one guy, if he got open he threw it, if not he did some Gator improvisation against 3rd stringers and it was minimally effective.

I haven’t yet concluded that the highly mediocre results he achieved will be received in any positive way by the coaching staff.

If 3rd QB is on PS, there is one less player on the bubble who has to be cut. I doubt that the market for either Tebow or Barkley is so hot that they will be snapped-up by another team quickly. At least one of them, if not both, will still be available later in the fall.

  103. 103 Media Mike said at 9:53 AM on September 4th, 2015:

All of our returner jobs are at least 2, or ever 3, guys deep with the existing roster before we begin to talk Mostert vs. Barner.

Mostert needs to be on the team over Barner. The returns by Barner were awesome, but they were well blocked (including blocks by Mostert). We’re not fragile at KR/PR, but all of our other RBs have been dinged up in the past two seasons at some point.

Based on what took place on the field in plain view of everybody; Mostert is the better guy to keep.

Barner looked great on those punt returns, but he’s pretty far down the chart at PR, right? Sproles 1 Huff 2 Barner 3? would be a shame to waste a roster spot for your #3 PR and a meager #4 RB.

Barner might get picked up by another team looking for a PR.
Mostert might get picked up by another team looking for a RB.

the counter argument to all of this is that decent RBs these days seem to be a dime a dozen. heck, Monangai didn’t look half bad out there either.

The whole league had multiple chances at Barner and didn’t take him, so I don’t worry about losing him. And there is zero downside if we do. Mostert is the best RB prospect we have on the roster, that needs to be kept.

  131. 131 Mitchell said at 9:48 AM on September 4th, 2015:

I actually think Reynolds has been playing well. It seems loke he is always around the ball. Hes got 2 ints and close to 15 tackles in 4 games. He might have more ints if he doesnt drop one and the Jets throw more yesterday.

  132. 132 MysweetBrick said at 12:14 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Reynolds has some ballhawking skills and can probably play a decent deep cover centerfield. But he is just so limited as an athlete. He doesn’t even look as athletic as Kurt Coleman. Sean Considine was much better than Reynolds will ever be.

  133. 133 GEAGLE said at 9:46 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Longterm, I like Couplin potential more then Reynolds, but we already have two safeties that can’t play, MARAGOS and Proz, so the winner of Coup vs. reynolds will have to be the primary backup safety, and I think Reynolds today is way more game ready to play safety in the NFL then Couplin. Give Couplin another year on Practice squad and he should be able to take the next step and make the 2016 roster
    ..

8 OL vs. 9 OL, is what I struggle with the most… If we keep 9, I think that means we aren’t ready to give up on Moffitt, if we keep 8, Moffit gets cut.
    ..
That’s what I THINK WILL HAPPEN..
    ..
What do I want to Happen? Sheed Bailey over Miles Austin (I wish!)
    ..
no TEBOW or Barkley.. Find a better #3 or just go with two, SAM and Sanchez.
    ..
I like Mostert on the PS.. For a track star I like how his speed has been able to translate to the football field…. I think we have a 60/40 chance of getting Mostert on Practice squad iwth out getting poached… I would like to keep Mostert in our pipeline, but if he gets poached I won’t lose any sleep because I bet Chip finds us a quality Undrafted RB each year…
    ..
If I had my way, Molk would get cut… But with Moffitt not practicing at center and Vandervelde sucking just as much, my guy says chip keeps MOLK, but I’d cut him instantly if it was up to me… I’d probably also keep Denzel Rice over BIGS
    ..

  209. 209 D3FB said at 11:32 AM on September 4th, 2015:

The thought with Brown, at least my thought was, he has two good outside WRs, the Cardinals finally have a semblance of an OL the running game should be solid but not eat all the touches, and I don’t trust that defense so I think they are gonna have to throw it. Brown has game breaking speed and agility. He’s not going to put up a ton of points every week but he’s a guy who could have a few monster weeks.

In the same vein, Tyler Lockett.

    Go take him off waivers.

  210. 210 peteike said at 11:34 AM on September 4th, 2015:

great point, they have 3 solid WRs so may spread around too many touches to get that consistent scoring. I keep seeing Fitz way down there for the taking in mocks

12 team league it appears? Im mixed on Forsett with Kubiak leaving, I liked him last year a lot. Not sure about Evans and Robinson based on their QBs/teams but good draft if it is 12 team. 212. 212 D3FB said at 11:36 AM on September 4th, 2015:

    My 10 man league:

RB: Demarco, Latvaius Murray, Ameer Abdullah, Isiah Crowell, Chris Polk
WR: Jordan Matthews, Amari Cooper, John Brown, Kenny Stills, Tyler Lockett
    TE: Travis Kelce, ASJ
    K: Blair Walsh
    D/ST: Chiefs

  213. 213 peteike said at 11:38 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Amari and Ameer, gambling on rooks eh. I like both also. Im guessing you took Rodgers and Kelce high which takes away some stock in other spots in a 10 teamer but really solid team. Someone sell me on Latvaius, Im steering clear besides him being the 1 right

  214. 214 D3FB said at 11:44 AM on September 4th, 2015:

Ameer was my favorite back in the draft, I love the kid. Joquie’s been dinged up and I think Ameer gets 200+ touches.

Latavius is basically the unquestioned workhorse. He’s got talent and I think they wont want to lean too heavy on Carr in year 2.

Basically I picked 9th in a snake, took Demarco and A-A-ron the first go round, Matthews and Kelce the second time around. I figured those four should consistently put up enough to keep me in games so I went with a bunch of high upside players that I can mix in depending on matchups.

  215. 215 peteike said at 11:50 AM on September 4th, 2015:

nice, Im in same draft Sat night so Ive done a ton of mocks. Smart ideas. Ive been terrible last few years so I need ideas on trying to mix up from my normal routine. Of course taking AP last year as my first pick didnt help. I also refuse to take him out of principle this year so hope Im not first ha. I usually go RB strong and WR mixed in and get my QB and TEs late.

  222. 222 RogerPodacter said at 10:52 AM on September 4th, 2015:

as a possible PS candidate, do you think the team’s thinking is that if he is one of the first ones released it will give other teams the impression that the player wasn’t any good, making it more likely the player will clear waivers?
(wow, thats really convoluted, hopefully that makes sense…)

  223. 223 Avery Greene said at 10:56 AM on September 4th, 2015:

I know what you mean. I would need ACViking to confirm, but I think it’s 24hrs from the time they release him. That means if he clears waivers, he could be put on the practice squad before 11AM tomorrow and he could still practice with the team.

Just a thought, but I think this is why they cut some players earlier than others.

Based on Chip’s comments about smoke-screens and such with the draft, I’m not sure Chip really exercises mind games with these kinds of things, he’s just focused on this team since he can’t control what other teams do. Players known to be released so far:

    OT Brett Boyko
    G/C Julian Vandervelde
    OG John Moffitt
    WR Rasheed Bailey
    WR Quran Pratt
    TE Andrew Geichert
    DE Brian Mihalik
    LB Deontae Skinner

    Trying to trade Goode.

  249. 249 Avery Greene said at 12:11 PM on September 4th, 2015:

If they can trade Goode for a 6th or 7th, that means 9 guys have been let go and 13 more to come.

  250. 250 Greg Richards said at 12:11 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Also, sounds like Atlanta might have traded for OG Andy LeVitre.

He tweeted RiseUp which is the Falcons’ slogan.

If they did trade for him, I hope they cut Asamoah and we steal him.

  251. 251 Greg Richards said at 12:12 PM on September 4th, 2015:

My sleeper to make team is Josh Andrews. Was ahead of Vandervelde, who’s already been cut last night. G/C versatility may give him edge over Molk.

  252. 252 Greg Richards said at 12:19 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Eagles reportedly open to trading Kenjon Barner.

  253. 253 Media Mike said at 12:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Great. Get him out of here.

  254. 254 Sean Stott said at 12:22 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    ??

  255. 255 Media Mike said at 12:27 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I’d rather Mostert be on the roster than Barner. Trading Barner accomplishes that goal.

  256. 256 Sean Stott said at 12:33 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Mostert strikes me as more of an athlete than a football player

  257. 257 RogerPodacter said at 12:35 PM on September 4th, 2015:

he does have a track background. not sure he played much football before college, so he’s probably pretty raw as a RB now?

  258. 258 Ark87 said at 12:37 PM on September 4th, 2015:

that’s who he was supposed to be as a track star who was a role player out of Purdue, but he wasn’t. He showed a lot more running back ability than anyone expected, patience, vision, physicality

  259. 259 Media Mike said at 1:09 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Hence why I want him kept.

  260. 260 Media Mike said at 1:08 PM on September 4th, 2015:

He’s looked like a football player when blocking on special teams, rushing the football, and catching the football.

  261. 261 Sean Stott said at 1:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    Which is nice.

  262. 262 botto said at 1:33 PM on September 4th, 2015:

and crushing a few guys too

  263. 263 RogerPodacter said at 12:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

wow. thats surprising. might mean they are leaning towards mostert?

  264. 264 RogerPodacter said at 12:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

maybe we want to get some OL depth in exchange for Barner? pickup some guy that is going to be cut from another team, that we would be unlikely to get through waivers?

  265. 265 ian_no_2 said at 12:39 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Trading Barner and keeping Mostart keeps one of them from donning the Texas helmet with a star on it. I am very surprised by how well Mostart ran after rushing so little at college.

  266. 266 OregonDucker said at 12:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Eagles open to trading Barner?? Not sure I believe this reporting but good news for Mostert side.

  267. 267 Media Mike said at 12:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    GET BARNER OUT OF HERE!

  268. 268 OregonDucker said at 12:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    Could go to Dallas?

  269. 269 Ark87 said at 12:28 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I don’t believe it either, they can just pick up Mostert off waiver wires who has looked every bit as good and probably has higher upside. My guess is that Barner is only getting the nod over him because he has been with Chip for so long he knows the system better or something.

  270. 270 Greg Richards said at 12:29 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Mostert hasn’t shown PR ability. A few teams really need a player there.

  271. 271 Ark87 said at 12:31 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I saw David Fipp put some nice punt returns on tape, didn’t see a whole lot from this Barner fellow

  272. 272 James said at 12:36 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Barner puts 0 confidence in me as an actual RB. At least Mostert flashed as a runner. Hoping Barner gets traded for a backup OL.

  273. 273 botto said at 1:00 PM on September 4th, 2015:

what if the cowboys pick him up?

  274. 274 Ark87 said at 1:14 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    Mostert or Barner?
If Mostert, he wouldn’t be starting or anything, but he could be trouble in a few years behind that strong O-line. He is a year from his potential I think. Showing way better RB skills than anyone expected, but he isn’t showing the speed everyone expected from the track star. Probably needs the game to slow down around him before he feels comfortable running like his head is on fire.

If Barner he’d be an OK rotational back.

  275. 275 botto said at 1:32 PM on September 4th, 2015:

true he looks less fast but more tough then a track star

  276. 276 botto said at 12:39 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I like barner but I would go with mostert over him it hink

  277. 277 Greg Richards said at 12:42 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Don’t be shocked if the Eagles only keep 3 RBs on the 53-man roster. People speculated over Tucker or Josey would be the 4th RB last year and they only kept 3. Keeping 4 TEs and 3 RBs seems to be Kelly’s preferred roster alignment.

  278. 278 Avery Greene said at 12:45 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Do you think Tomlinson showed more than Mostert? At least Mostert is giving more on ST.

  279. 279 Greg Richards said at 12:47 PM on September 4th, 2015:

No, out of the 2 I think Mostert deserves it over Tomlinson. I could see them picking up a 4th TE on waivers though. I’m keeping an eye on Joseph Fauria of the Lions.

  280. 280 Avery Greene said at 12:49 PM on September 4th, 2015:

With as much as they plan to run the ball this year, I would hope Mostert sticks. We had 4 TEs last year and Casey really didn’t give us much. With Mostert, you can leave Huff to focus strictly on WR, and still have Mostert on the coverage units with his speed (maybe a new gunner?).

  281. 281 Greg Richards said at 12:50 PM on September 4th, 2015:

There are different body types they want on STs. Mostert wouldn’t really replace Casey’s previous role. One of the LBs or a TE could.

  282. 282 botto said at 1:04 PM on September 4th, 2015:

makes sense since trey and huff can play it if needed, but mostert is decent

    Couplin makes this team.

There’s just too much physical talent there to cut him for a guy like Prosinski.

  320. 320 mksp said at 1:30 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Obviously, it could be Reynolds, not Couplin that won the spot.

But the important thing is that it’s not Chris freaking Prosinski.

  321. 321 Ark87 said at 1:33 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I actually thought he was the best tackler of the bunch last night. Didn’t see much coverage last night. Not because I don’t have the coaches’ film, because nobody covered anything last night and ne’er a safety around

  322. 322 Sean Stott said at 1:32 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I can’t be the only one who wrote him off as a DB simply b/c he’s white? Jerome Couplin looks like an athletic freak. He has super long arms too.

  323. 323 mksp said at 1:33 PM on September 4th, 2015:

And he’s a great tackler. Love Couplin.

  324. 324 Greg Richards said at 1:34 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Raw. That tackling ability helps on STs though. He was on all 4 core STs in the Packers game, which got me thinking he could be chosen over Prosinski.

  325. 325 OregonDucker said at 1:34 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    Yeah, he’s game.

  326. 326 Avery Greene said at 1:47 PM on September 4th, 2015:

To piggy back on this, they probably felt the upside and athleticism is something they didn’t want to put out on waivers. If they think he can turn into a stud, keep a spot for him.

  327. 327 mksp said at 1:50 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Agreed, someone would pick him up.

We need to save a couple spots for these developmental guys. Mihalik got cut, but he may sneak through to the PS since he has zero ST value.

If Couplin is serviceable on ST, then you try to develop him and keep him on the 53.

  328. 328 A_T_G said at 2:43 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Nice call. Couplin and Bailey over Prozinski and either Tutu or Austin are my surprise predictions.

  329. 329 RogerPodacter said at 2:44 PM on September 4th, 2015:

i thought Bailey was already cut
Edit – already cut as per Greg Richard’s post a little ways down

  330. 330 FairOaks said at 2:59 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Some guys are on the roster because of STs; their actual “position” tag is basically irrelevant. I’m sure that is why Tutu will make the team instead of Bailey, even though Bailey is better at the actual WR thing. That said… we have to have at least one real backup safety on the roster, preferably two, and if they have someone that can do Prosinski’s role almost as well (maybe Tutu?), then he is fair game to be cut. Perhaps they were hoping he could be a reasonable actual backup safety as well, and if not, then he was gone.

  331. 331 CrackSammich said at 1:37 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I think Prosinski sealed his fate last night on the play where the CB had the WR wrapped up, and Prosinski came from behind and wrapped up the CB, nearly pulling pulling him off of the WR. That was some precious shit right there.

  332. 332 Greg Richards said at 1:32 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I think one of the DBs that will be on our 53-man roster to start season wasn’t with us in training camp.

  335. 335 Greg Richards said at 1:39 PM on September 4th, 2015:

PFF’s ratings are fundamentally flawed because they don’t take into account quality of competition. A player that grades averagely against starting level talent is often going to be better than a player who grades out well going against inferior competition.

  358. 358 eagleyankfan said at 2:04 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    that — and it’s pre-season…

  359. 359 TypicalDouche said at 2:07 PM on September 4th, 2015:

So are you saying that just because Hart faced lesser competition that the ratings don’t matter or shouldn’t be relevant?

  360. 360 RogerPodacter said at 2:12 PM on September 4th, 2015:

i figured he was saying that a PFF scores do not take into account the level of competition the player is facing. Since its preseason, some of the scores from the backups should be taken with a grain of salt when comparing them to others – its up to the reader to take into account the level of competition.

lets say Hart scored X pff points going against backups, and “some guy” also scores X pff points, but goes against the starters. you should probably infer that “some guy” is better than Hart.
likewise, if Hart scored X pff points going against starters, and “some guy” scores X+Y pff points going against backups, its a real grey-area. Hart is likely the better of the two in this case.

  361. 361 Greg Richards said at 2:12 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Just that you shouldn’t take the numbers literally. He hasn’t played the 6th best out of all 3-4 DEs in preseason. It just means he’s done well against who he was lined up against.

Essentially. They’ve gone out and gotten some better evaluators (Jordan Plocher, who wrote a 130 page report on the Eagles offense and tendencies this offseason for fun) recently but most of them are just Dick and Bob the friendly football fans that can’t tell you shit about technical neccessities of running a tackle-end game or schematically what players are supposed to be doing. Alot of them are volunteers (expand your public profile! maybe we’ll pay you later!) Almost all are part time.

They grade primarily off TV copy.

They assign numerical values to plays.

They get grades out in less than 6 hours turnaround.

(For reference the 4 games I did of Tobin, was just Tobin, using all 22, and took me about an hour and a half each, Tommy’s DGR’s have to take 10-15 hours minimum)

Eagles will only have 3 draft picks on roster. #cantblamehowie

They had 6 picks. 3 will be on the active roster & it would have been 4 if not for Shepherd’s season-ending injury. So they cut a 6th & 7th round pick.

Of course, if Goodell had used the concepts of “fairness”, “precedent”, and “evidence” in any of his judgments, as opposed to “whatever is best for PR”, or “whatever I feel like today”, then maybe it never would have come to this.

Here is my thought on Tebow. I am not a fan of his off the field – i am a devout atheist, i find the whole hoopla about him a distraction and stupid.

But, in the 4th quarter i was having fun watching him, and i had a this feeling that if the defence had got a stop and got him the ball back he could drive down the field. I think this is not so much to do with his ‘clutchness’, but our players and the opposition believe it, the stadium feels it, coaches feel it. We play with greater belief. The opposition plays with fear because they do not want to be beaten by him, Coaches loose their cool, players make mistakes, be it penalties or missed assignments.

If we need a QB to spot start in a big game Tebow gives you a better option than Barclay who lacks confidence and the team lacks confidence in as well. Think we will not see him play a snap all year, and it will be frustrating to deal with the trolls and idiots that follow in his wake – but he will not damage the team off the field or in the locker room and in the worst case he gives you a chance…

I don’t even necessarily have a problem with him being “devout”. He wears it on his sleeve too much, to my liking. Barkely is (was) just as devout. But he kept it to himself, because it’s a personal thing.

My problem is with his fans, who are probably joined on a Venn diagram with all of the groups of people I can’t stand in this country. Rabid, psychotic lunatics with no sense of reason or proportion.

And while it is fun to watch anyone in Eagles green throw or run for a touchdown (seriously, has there ever been a famous running quarterback outside of Fran Tarkenton who _wasn’t_ an Eagle?), his throwing motion still makes me vomit sometimes.

I think you’ve hit on what Chip sees. He had a QB at Oregon, Masoli, who also was a bad passer and reader of Ds. So Chip ran behind Blount and Stewart, played lots of QB options, and screens.

    Exactly.

I’d not followed Oregon very closely when Masoli came to Ole Miss. But I have a good friend, an Ole Miss alum (former Rebel basketball player), who’s taken me on a bunch of visits to the Grove followed by Ole Miss games.

After seeing how Masoli played, I began to understand what Kelly was about.

At the college level, he’d have made Barkley into Bradford x 2 (and Bradford into Peyton Manning x 5).

Anyway, Masoli got me watching Oregon.

Yeah, trying to downplay those returns by calling them well blocked is weak. Sproles made the pro bowl last year with returns on well blocked plays.

And he looked good both running and receiving on several non-touchdown plays. If you didn’t see that, fine. But the team obviously did.

i don’t think it’s really clear. Even so it’s a 3rd year player on a plateau vs a rookie with upside. In the 4th slot. If you’re going to keep a 4th RB is it not to stash away someone with serious talent to be a feature in the future?

If we are keeping Barner to take punts I think that is a mistake. It’s simply will not be possible to get the ball in Sproles’ hands as the 3rd RB, he needs those punt returns

  582. 582 myartz04 said at 5:29 PM on September 4th, 2015:

When i see a guy like Mostert I always think of someone like Ryan Moats…to my untrained eye he was awesome running the ball…but just overall wasn’t a good enough football player.

  591. 591 Media Mike said at 5:37 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Really? ST excels by putting top players in there, not just the best of whatever makes the roster. He’ll also make a solid backup if either of the big 2 goes down. Solid preseason, solid college career, passes the eye test – why the hate?

  597. 597 GEAGLE said at 5:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

WOW not sure what I’m most surprised about.
    .
Shocked Prosinski was cut, thought he was an absolute lock as our leading tackler on Teams last year. Not sure what it means. Do Coup and Reynoldw both make it?… Curious to see who the Eagles use on Special teams opening day. Last year we had an elite ST unit, but lost 3 key players, Proz, James Casey, and Brad Smith, only bringing in Tutu….. Apparently they think we can afford to lose prosinski and maintain Elite ST status…curious to see what ST Personel looks like in Atlanta.
    ..
shocked anyone paid anything for Barkley, makes sense that it was someone like Bruce Arians….. I assume we will be able to get another conditional pick for Naje,Goode..
    ..
Shocked Niners cut Darnell Docket after how much they lost on defense..
    ..
Shocked that the Titans got Falcons to take on Levitre’s massive contract in a trade… Shows how much that Falcons OL sucks..
    ..
SHOCKED that NT Louis Nix has already been cut by Texans
    ..
bills cut OG Cyril Richardson who has some athleticism is still young, would have loved to have had him in OTAs and see what Stoutland could do with him given a few months… Can’t pick him up now, too raw to help
    ..
I’m sure there will be plenty more surprises..
    ..
It would be awesome if we can find an upgrade or two on waivers better then what we currently have on the bench….. Really worried about the backüp Center position

Tackling is an issue that can be rectified. A lot harder than improving pure speed/change of direction.

  709. 709 Media Mike said at 8:01 PM on September 4th, 2015:

He wasn’t just whiffing on tackles. That “coverage” on the TD he gave up last night was putrid.

  710. 710 Greg Richards said at 8:02 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Inconsistent yes, but he’s flashed more ability to cover slot than anyone else. Even when Biggers was playing well, that was more as an outside corner. Best slot option is Thurmond which would likely mean bringing in another safety.

  711. 711 Media Mike said at 8:03 PM on September 4th, 2015:

And I don’t think you’re wrong on your assessment of Watkins overall. That makes me question the report.

Another possibility for pure slot – Tony Carter of Denver. Denver is deep at DB. Carter might not have size Kelly likes, but Undlin might be able to persuad him.

  717. 717 GEAGLE said at 8:36 PM on September 4th, 2015:

It really was here horrible that TD he gave up, but unless we are getting something decent In return, I can’t get behind pissing away more depth on a young corner that we drafted a year ago… We will NEVER draft a corner that will have a monster rookie year, Rowe is going to struggle like all other young corners… How do you give up developing a 4th round pick from a year ago who you had practicing at 3 different positions since his rookie year? I don’t understand this unless the compensation is juicy or their is a better corner on his way to Philly in a separate move..

You can find some really good players in rounds 4 and 5, and I’m tired of getting dog shit out of those rounds..
Wolff and Barkley GONE, didn’t lay til year 3… Now we give away Jaylen before year 2? I don’t understand that.. Every CB we ever draft is going to need more then one season to start looking good for us..
    ..
If he is traded, their has to be another show to drop shortly afterwards., I’d rather see Jaylen play in Atlanta then Rowe.. And I don’t want BIGS here

  720. 720 GEAGLE said at 8:14 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I dunno about that… We are already low on slot depth, I think someone a little more proven has to be added if we are going to lose Jaylen… I could see Rice make the roster, but I’m not sure THATS the kid that gives us confidence to trade away Jaylen.. I would expect Rice AND another DB..
    ..
Could it be the 6’2 Southward kid that Atlanta cut, who was a safety they tried to move to corner who the Falcons cut … Can’t THNK of his name, desmond southward or something like that?

  721. 721 ACViking said at 8:17 PM on September 4th, 2015:

If we trade Jaylen, I’d be pretty surprised if we don’t sign or trade for another DB.,,, we can’t lose Boykin, JaCorey, Jaylen and Cut Ramdall Evans and just expect to replace them from with in.., we had nice depth, but not THAT DEEP…. Even if they put Rice on the roster, have to think they will add another CB who isn’t currently an eagle..

On the Tebow dysfunction topic, I’m wondering if the flashes of decent play from him – which, granted, have not been frequent, but bigger flashes than from Barkley – offset in CK’s mind the palpable slowness of his decision-making. This guy is a train wreck for tempo.

  735. 735 ACViking said at 8:25 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    OD’s theory — I believe — is:

  736. 736 OregonDucker said at 8:27 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Yes AC. Chip has THE MASOLI OFFENSE which fits Timmy to a tee. Run often, use play action and zone reads, screens, and QB draws. Beat the D to death and confuse them. Chip’s made it work before and he can again.

Once DBs get run over a few times by Timmy they will start acting abnormal. They’ll start cheating on play action, taking a first step forward, and then BOOM a pass over the top for big yards or a TD. You saw some of this last night. Ds start to get real confused when the QB is a bruiser.

  739. 739 unhinged said at 8:39 PM on September 4th, 2015:

  741. 741 Media Mike said at 8:43 PM on September 4th, 2015:

  742. 742 OregonDucker said at 8:48 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Right MM, I’m saying that Chip can use him as a weapon, not a conventional QB weapon. At some point Chip might want to rest Bradford, he’ll then have Timmy in play. Ds will have to plan for him even though he may never play. And if he does, he’s in the hands of a master magician who has worked some special spells before.

  743. 743 Media Mike said at 8:50 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I’d prefer that plan sat on the shelf unless there was a complete emergency.

I think what we’d find is that there are a few more guys on Sundays than Saturdays that can run and thump.

  744. 744 Media Mike said at 8:25 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Two issues possibly. 1 – Barkley flat out sucked after the first pre season game.

2 – Who knows if they even carry 3 QBs or not. And how they use Tebow, or don’t, if he is kept on the 53 will tell us a lot as well.

  745. 745 anon said at 8:32 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Don’t waste draft pics on a cornerback if you aren’t willing to invest more then 1 year in their development… U will never draft a corner that translates to the NFL right away, 98% of corners need more then a year before they are really ready to play..
    .,
And if u are going to cut a 4th round pic after 1 year, then at least let the kid spend the year trying to focus on 1 position.. Chip only wants rookies to worry about 1 position and expands their roles in future years, yet because Jaylen was so smart and could handle it mentally, he has been jerked around between corner, slot and safety positions since he arrived…

I do NOT understand this, and I will MEVER agree with trashing a corner u drafted a year ago in the first 5 rounds.

I don’t agree with getting rid of Jaylen at all.. But I’m not going to get upset about it because I learned that often whenever we initially hear of a move chip made, we often hate it initially, and later on another shoe drops and we understand why it was a good move…. So Hopefully this is another case of ONLY seeing half the puzzle right now, and we end up supporting this when we see the full picture… At least I hope…

Fair take. I do see us as a serious contender THIS year. Not without question of course. But, still enough so that it makes me lean towards preferring Boykin over the future pick. I’ve been a fan for 35 years, and I’ve yet to see a complete team that doesn’t go into the season with at least 1 glaring weakness. And, every year, that weakness, that can be seen from a mile away ends up being the difference in our season. Just so tired of watching it happen.

    http://grantland.com/the-triangle/sam-bradford-eagles-chip-kelly/

I think it’s an intriguing idea. Is it really this hard to take a generation (or any given year all men between age 20 and 40 if you will) in a large country with a pretty high football participation rate, and come up with 32 solid QB’s? And we consistently come up with about 10-15. Is the skill set *THAT* rare? It’s probably not a coincidence that the functional organizations end up with functional QB’s. And functional QB’s are so hard to come by because functional organizations so rarely get an opportunity to pick up good prospects (you often have to do something extreme to get one and it almost always involves one or more of the following red flags: injury history, age, price). It does seem relatively rare that the functional QB comes in and turns an organization around.

We really like Couplin’s upside and don’t want to risk losing him. If I’m going to sacrifice a good STs player like Prosinski then I have to put priority on STs with other positions. Watkins is not a good STs player. Both Biggers and Rice are better on STs. Biggers has the same degree of versatility that Watkins does. We like Rice’s upside. Watkins goes.

thank friggin jesus the Ed Reynolds era is over. With him and Pros out, looks like Couplin made it.

  800. 800 JoeBlow said at 10:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    never a fit here

  801. 801 HazletonEagle said at 10:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    yep

  802. 802 Ark87 said at 10:20 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Maybe one ends up on the practice squad

  803. 803 Mitchell said at 10:22 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Dont really understand the Reynolds hate.

  804. 804 HazletonEagle said at 10:22 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    well… you see…the problem was, he just wasnt….how do I put it…good….

  805. 805 Mitchell said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

What did he do so poorly?

  806. 806 HazletonEagle said at 10:24 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    play football

  807. 807 Mitchell said at 10:25 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Ok, so you really have no critique of him? He didnt cover well, defend the run, etc. He just sucked?

  808. 808 HazletonEagle said at 10:27 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I critiqued him before. Basically, he did nothing well.

  809. 809 Mitchell said at 10:31 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I dont agree. He had 2 ints and could have had more, plus he showed more agression as the preseason went on.

  810. 810 HazletonEagle said at 10:32 PM on September 4th, 2015:

We will never agree on him.

  811. 811 mksp said at 10:58 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    He wasn’t special at all.

He did many things good enough, but did no single thing very well.

He’s a middle manager. Whatever. You don’t win championships with those guys.

  812. 812 Mitchell said at 2:29 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Neither are a lot of safeties in the NFL. He was an adequate back up and someone with potential ballhawking abilities. I can inderstand that he may not fit the defense well but he isnt a terrible player. I thought he got more physical as the season went along as well.

  813. 813 JoeBlow said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

i think it would benefit his career if he could latch onto a cover 2 team

  814. 814 HazletonEagle said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

he might be a decent player- somewhere else.

  815. 815 JoeBlow said at 10:24 PM on September 4th, 2015:

i think he’s a backup but he could at least make a roster somewhere else

  816. 816 Greg Richards said at 10:22 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Can a guy who never played in a regular season name actually have an “era”?

  817. 817 Dragon_Eagle said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Yes, but it doesn’t count in the standings.

  818. 818 HazletonEagle said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    yep

  819. 819 FairOaks said at 10:55 PM on September 4th, 2015:

He didn’t make the team last year either.

  820. 820 HazletonEagle said at 10:21 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Raiders cutting Ponder. Might be better than Tebow.

  821. 821 Joe Minx said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    No, he really isn’t.

  822. 822 BlindChow said at 10:41 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    Better than Barkley though.

  823. 823 jtre said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

4 cuts left, who are they? I know they are trying to trade goode so that would put it down to 3

  824. 824 GEAGLE said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Seahawks are shopping Christina Micheals, hoping they have some sense to not trade him to an NFC team like Dallas who beat Seattle last year… Send that kid to the AFC… I want Dallas to be stuck with their 3 current RBs…

  825. 825 Dragon_Eagle said at 10:25 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Rumor is the Boys are trying to pick up Montee Ball from Denver.

  826. 826 GEAGLE said at 10:29 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Meh.. How much better is he then what they have?.. Dunbar is allegedly their “Nickel RB”… McFadden is healthy so u know idiotic Jerry won’t cut a fellow Razorback..
    ..
Looks like Dion Lewis is going to make the Oatriots, replacing Shame Vereen… Good for that kid, he been fighting hard, bouncing all over the league to finally play a role on a contending team. Happy for the kid

  827. 827 Joe Minx said at 10:24 PM on September 4th, 2015:

So does it look like Diaheem Watkins really did make it?

  828. 828 Greg Richards said at 10:25 PM on September 4th, 2015:

No, still a few guys to cut. Could have made it over Marcus Smith, but I doubt it. If not, it will be a choice between 10th LB and 9th OL.

  829. 829 A_T_G said at 10:35 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Kiko, DeMeco, Kendricks, Hicks, Barwin, Graham, Smith, Jones, and Watkins. Goode is already as good(e) as gone, if they are trying to get something for him. Am I missing anyone?

I can’t imagine Smith getting cut. If they get rid of another, I think it is the potential of Watkins versus the versatility of Jones.

  830. 830 Greg Richards said at 10:45 PM on September 4th, 2015:

    You’re missing Braman.

  831. 831 A_T_G said at 10:49 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Right, those special teams only guys get me every time.

  832. 832 GEAGLE said at 10:25 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Seemed talented but Raw to me.. thought he could be a solid practices be squad candidate, but I’ll be surprised if they keep him on the 53…

  833. 833 mksp said at 11:03 PM on September 4th, 2015:

You should really, probably stop making predictions bro.

  834. 834 HazletonEagle said at 10:26 PM on September 4th, 2015:

thatd be cool. theres got to be some roster bubble player who flashed and actually makes it. Seems like the worst thing for those guys to do is ball out- Josey, Bailey, Mostert. Maybe Watkins did just enough, and simultaneously, just little enough as well.

  835. 835 HazletonEagle said at 10:26 PM on September 4th, 2015:

When you consider he was a DE for UAB and made some plays in the NFL as an OLB who came to the team late- theres potential there.

  836. 836 James said at 10:25 PM on September 4th, 2015:

So what did we learn this summer? Smaller DB’s except JaCorey have no chance at making the roster.

  837. 837 Ark87 said at 10:27 PM on September 4th, 2015:

I’m not sure if this is bad or good, but I have absolute confidence that all the DB’s will make it through waivers and be available to sign onto the practice squad should we chose to do so

  838. 838 HazletonEagle said at 10:29 PM on September 4th, 2015:

Not sure about the Christine Michael trade rumor. Turbin is being waived/injured. The Fred Jackson move finally makes some sense.

  839. 839 A_T_G said at 10:51 PM on September 4th, 2015:

This is probably below somewhere, by Eskin is reporting Jalen Watkins was cut. Guess they couldn’t find a trade.

“Despite multiple reports #Eagles r not trying to trade RB Kenjon Barner but are shopping LB Najee Goode. Im told DB J. Watkins has been cut.”
