Detailed Game Review – PHI 39, NO 17

Two desperate teams played at The Linc on Sunday. Both were 1-3 and needed to win in the worst way. There is a huge difference in 2-3 teams making the playoffs compared to 1-4 teams. It wasn’t “Must Win”, but was pretty darn close.

New Orleans scored the first and last TDs of the game. In between, the Eagles outscored them 39-3 and dominated the game. The Eagles were the more physical team. They ran the ball better. They pressured the QB better. They blocked better. They hit harder and they tackled better. I did not anticipate the Eagles sacking Drew Brees 5 times and coming up with 4 takeaways.

It was far from a perfect game. Sam Bradford threw a pair of Red Zone INTs. Drops continue to be an issue. There was a missed extra point. 3rd down defense was troublesome again. And the Eagles gave up too many long pass plays (7 of 20 or more yards).

You can look at things one of two ways. You could say it is a good sign the Eagles could blow someone out despite making so many mistakes. Or you could say that just shows how bad the Saints are.

COACHING

I’m not big into talking about how a coach “has his team ready”. That tends to be more of a fan/media thing than reality. I did like the vibe the Eagles had on Sunday. The team was loose and confident. Credit Kelly if you want. Or team leaders. Or me. Whatever. The team had a good vibe all day, even when things went wrong.

Kelly does deserve credit for putting together an excellent gameplan. There were more 2-TE sets, due to the matchup with the Saints. There were more throws to the TEs. There seemed to be more plays under center. The Eagles used motion quite a bit. The WR would sometimes block and sometimes run a route. That was effective.

Chip Kelly went for it on 4th/7 on the first drive, when the Eagles were at the Saints 39-yard line. That’s too far to have Caleb Sturgis kicking so I had no problem with the decision. In the 2nd quarter, the Eagles drove to the 35. They had 4th/9. Kelly again decided to go for it. Kelly just didn’t feel comfortable having Sturgis try a long FG so he went for it again. The Eagles had been moving the ball up and down the field so there is some logic to his decision. Unfortunately the Eagles did not convert either 4th down situation.

There was one bad moment for Kelly. He was called for a penalty late in half and that cost the team 15 yards. The team still got a FG, but with the extra yards they might have been able to get a TD. He admitted he was wrong during the week. Got out of hand with something he said to the officials.

The defensive gameplan was effective. The Saints did rack up 388 yards, but 80 of them came on the late drive when plenty of backups were on the field and the D held them to 10 points until that final drive as well. Davis once again focused on coverage, knowing Brees could get the ball out quickly and was tough to blitz. Davis did mix in some blitzes and different looks to at least keep Brees from getting too comfortable.

I was worried about CJ Spiller as a receiver on the outside. Davis found a way to get Safeties on him most of the time, which took away some of the advantage of his speed. Spiller can run right by most LBs.

OFFENSE

MISC

* Eagles ran 79 plays

* 4 of 11 on 3rd downs

* Just 3 for 7 in the Red Zone

* Running can make all the difference. Murray outside for 3 yards. Murray outside for 24 yards. Next up, play-action pass to Huff for 41-yard TD.

* Screen plays, whether to RBs or WRs, did not work. Saints weren’t getting enough penetration.

Players

QB

BRADFORD – Good game. 32-45-333. 2 TDs, Would have been even better if not for 2 INTs, both in the end zone. The first pick was just a terrible throw. He had Riley Cooper open in the back of the end zone. All Bradford had to do was throw toward the back pylon. Would have been easy TD. Instead, he threw directly to Coop. The line of sight was clear at that moment, but the DB was on the move. Easy pick. The next INT was different. Miles Austin was behind the DB by a step. Sam put the ball low and tried to keep it away from the DB, but the DB made a great play and caught it. Sam should have been more careful, but that was reasonably bad. The first INT was completely dumb.

I did like the fact that Bradford carried over his aggressiveness from the Skins game. He had plenty of open receivers to work with, but wasn’t afraid to take some chances when needed. He got the ball to the TEs a lot, which was good. The coaches had Bradford moving around a fair amount. He can throw well on the move, but needs to be more consistent. He had one play where he put the ball behind the receiver and it couldn’t be caught. He had another play where he led Matthews too much and it couldn’t be caught. Some throws were right on the money so the potential is there for him to become very good at this the more he does it.

PLAYS

* Early 3rd down throw to Cooper over the middle. Sam kept the ball low, where Riley could go get it, but not the DB.
* 4th down to Cooper down the sideline? That was a low percentage throw, but in Sam’s defense, Coop took the route inside the DB. Designed to stay wide. Not a great decision, but bad job by the receiver.
* Made good read and throw when he hit Huff on play-action pass that ended up going for 41-yard TD.
* Really good throw to Ertz in mid-2nd.
* Good throw to Huff in early 3rd. Naked bootleg. Sam took his time and made a good throw. Too often QBs on the move rush their throws.
* Celek was wide open for TD. Sometimes that is the hardest throw to make. Sam made good throw.

RB

MURRAY – Best game so far. 20-83-1 on the ground. 7-37 as a receiver. Showed some real good signs. Looking healthy and more comfortable in the offense. Had good runs outside and inside. Long carry went for 24 yards. Remains very hard to tackle, whether as runner or receiver. Lined up at RB and WR. Had quick catch on WR screen. Got loose for 24 yards in the early 2nd Qtr. If not tripped by pursuing LB, might have gone for long TD. Ran wheel route in early 4th. Bradford tried to hit him, but ball needed to be out in front. Caught short pass in the flat in 4th Qtr, then got upfield for gain of 13. Way to deal with loaded box while still getting the ball to your workhorse player.

While Murray played well, he remains a work in progress. He still isn’t seeing the field as well as he needs to. There were a handful of plays where Murray seemed to choose the wrong area to run to. I think the early season struggles are still affecting him as well. Couple of outside runs in the late 1st where he didn’t trust the play/blocking and didn’t go all the way, left yards on the field. Kelly will point that stuff out in film sessions. It will be interesting to see if DM gets better and better as the season goes along.

MATHEWS – Good game. Limited touches, but big return. 8-73-1 on the ground. 3-23 as receiver. Impressive catch and run in the late 1st. Caught ball outside and fought through 2 tackle attempts and got a few extra yards along the sideline. Showed good toughness, strength and balance on the play. Caught pass late in the half, split two tacklers and then got upfield for extra yards. Great job on TD run. Didn’t have big hole, but worked way through traffic and then reached over the GL for the score. Smart. Still showing excellent burst as a runner. Hits the hole hard and runs downhill. More decisive, comfortable than Murray. Had runs of 11, 16, and 33 yards.

SPROLES – 5-27 as a runner. 1-10 as a receiver. Got just enough of pass rusher to buy Bradford time on 3rd/7. Lined up with Mathews in backfield on 3rd down. Went to sideline and caught pass for the 1st down. Got pick from WR to keep LB off him and make it an easy play. Had highlight moment on 2nd Qtr run. Went backside and had DB there ready to tackle. Put a tough, but subtle move on the guy and went past him for 5-yd gain. Drew PI flag late in the half on 3rd down play, only to have officials talk and then pick up the flag. Looked like DB was there early to me.

BARNER – DNP

TE

CELEK – Very good game. 3-44-1 as a receiver. Strong game as a blocker. Came in motion and then had excellent seal block of OLB that let Murray get outside on 2nd Qtr run that went for 24 yds. Sustained the block. Wide open for easy TD in the mid-3rd. D just ignored him. Easy pitch and catch. Got open over the middle in the late 3rd. Caught pass and added 15 RAC yards. Gain of 23. Did a good job on outside runs throughout the game. Was able to engage and sustain, both LBs and DEs.

ERTZ – 5-60 as a receiver. Up and down as a blocker. Was supposed to make wind-back block of backside LB on run play, but tripped and fell. Still kept LB from making play. Did a good job of getting open in the middle of the field. Seemed to be able to hide from LBs at times. Good block of OLB in the early 2nd Qtr allowed Murray to bounce a run outside. Made tough catch in mid-2nd. Sam had to put the ball behind him to keep it away from the LB. Did that and Ertz was able to reach back and fully extend for the ball. Sloppy block on DE in 4th Qtr kept running play from doing much. Did have good block of DB on Murray’s TD run. Sealed the guy outside and gave Murray room to run.

BURTON- Didn’t see him on offense.

WR

MATTHEWS- Somewhat of a quiet game. 5-44. Dropped easy TD in early 2nd Qtr. Penalty on the play would have wiped it out anyway. Called for OPI late in the 1st half. Ran over DB, but right at the LOS. How’s that illegal? I didn’t get that. Long catch was 18 yards. Solid job as a blocker.

COOPER – Very active game. Only 3-32 as a receiver, but was targeted 8 times, most of the WRs. I don’t think that was by design. Coop was open on most of those. Sam just tried to get him the ball. Made good catch over middle early in the game. Went wide on 4th down, but took route to the inside. Looked like he should have stayed outside. Caught pass over the middle on 3rd/7 that moved the chains. Dropped a pass late in the half that would have put the Eagles down around the 10-yd line. Good seal block of DB in early 3rd let Sproles get upfield for nice gain. Bradford tried to hit Cooper down the right sideline in the early 3rd, but arm got hit as he released and the ball was underthrown. Caught pass over middle for 11 yards in mid-4th. Saints had loaded the box. Kelly wanted to throw to open the drive. Cooper came in motion a lot during the game and did a good job as a blocker.

AGHOLOR – Got hurt so didn’t play a full game. Got PI call to open the 2nd Qtr. Got called for OPI on next play when he screwed up a pick. Ran right into the DB. No subtlety at all. Easy penalty. That’s his second of the year and both were blatant. Can’t have it. Had one catch for 5 yards.

HUFF – Best game so far. 4-78-1. Sat down over the middle, caught pass, and then worked upfield through traffic for gain of 18. Great job of working through traffic to get open on TD pass. Made the catch and then turned upfield. Somersaulted into end zone, with the ball in one hand. Kelly said that won’t happen again. Too much risk. Caught pass down at the 6-yd line on opening drive of 3rd Qtr. DB couldn’t get him down, but pushed Huff back a couple of yards. Huff kept fighting and ended up down at the 2-yard line. Love the toughness and effort. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I was scared he might fumble. Good performance. Showed speed, elusiveness and toughness, which is perfect combination for this offense.

AUSTIN – Only one pass thrown his way and that was picked off. Not his fault.

AJIROTUTU – Didn’t see him on offense.

OL

* Pass protection for the most part was outstanding. Bradford wasn’t sacked and threw 45 passes. He wasn’t even hit very much. I didn’t take lengthy notes on every pass block. I focused on the ones where something went wrong. Do understand that the OL played very well and all had a big hand in the Eagles great offensive production.

PETERS – Good game. Shut down his guys in pass pro. Strong day as a run blocker. Good block on Mathews run to his side in late 1st. Got upfield to block LB. Bumped up against other LB on the way and slowed that guy for half a second. Consistently won his battles.

BARBRE – Got pushed down on 1st Qtr run, then DT stuffed play. Had chance for nice gain if he can make the block. He and Jason Peters caved in DL, opening good hole for Mathews run in late 1st. Got beaten to inside on 2nd/GL play where Bradford was picked off in the early 2nd Qtr. Looked like Sam was already starting to throw before pressure came from DT. Pulled and had good block of defender that helped spring Murray for a gain of 24 in the early 2nd Qtr. Excellent block on 4th Qtr run. Pulled left and sealed defender, giving Mathews free path to the edge. Good block on 4th Qtr run up middle. Helped Peters double DT, then peeled off and got LB. Murray got 8 yds on that play. Generally very good in pass pro. Sustained blocks and did a good job of moving his feet.

KELCE – Very good game. This is the Jason Kelce we’ve seen for a couple of years. Had very good block of DT on 1st Qtr run. Moved the guy and opened hole right up the middle for Mathews. There was a funny moment in the mid-2nd when the OL started to block, but Kelce hadn’t snapped the ball. Looked like he forgot the snap count. Penalty was on the “whole offensive line”. Did a really good job of pulling on run plays. Effective right and left. Great block in early 4th. Pulled left and took LB completely out of play. Mathews gained 33 yards on that run. Completely took NT out of the play on run up the middle by Murray in the early 4th. Big hole. Pulled and made good block on Murray’s TD run.

TOBIN – Up and down showing. Got off balance and was knocked to the ground on opening snap. That let Bradford get hit by DT. Poor block on early inside run led to minimal gain. Good block of ILB on Sproles run up the middle in the early 2nd Qtr. Whiffed on DL on stunt late in the half and the guy pressured Sam. Pulled outside on 3rd Qtr run. Couldn’t figure out who to block and really didn’t get anyone. Play got 10 yards, but had even more potential. Tobin has to make a quick decision and block someone. A few plays later pulled outside and did block DB, giving Sproles room down the field. Much better. Key block on Mathews TD run. Hit DT in the side and moved him down the line, opening crease for Mathews. Did a good job on backside of plays. Would engage DL and occupy him to keep the guy from chasing plays. Failed to block blitzing MLB on GL play. TFL. Even if Tobin makes that block, didn’t look like Mathews was going to score.

JOHNSON – Played hurt and it showed at times. Good block on early WR screen allowed Murray to get up the field for 1st down. Got driven back on 3rd Qtr pass play. Rusher hit Sam as he released the ball, causing tine pass to come up short. Power rush by Cam Jordan. Good block of backside DL on Mathews TD run. Gave up sack in mid-4th when Jordan cleanly beat him, but penalty on DB wiped it out. Eagles did run to his side a lot. Johnson had to take on DL and let pulling linemen, RB get wide. Did a good job on those plays.

D KELLY – DNP

ANDREWS- DNP

DEFENSE

MISC

* Saints were 8 of 16 on 3rd downs. Can’t have that.

* 2 of 4 in the Red Zone

* Saints long run was for 17 yds. Final play of 3rd Qtr and Eagles happened to be running a stunt. Lucky timing on call.

* There was one bad moment early in the game. Saints were in the RZ. Someone on the field called the wrong D based on the formation. Jordan Hicks tried to leave his guy to go where he thought he should be. That left guy wide open. Easy TD. Learning situation for the rookie. Never leave a guy wide open. Better to run the wrong D than no D. Bigger question there is why some veteran didn’t call a timeout.

PLAYERS

DL

COX – Great game. Led the team with 6 solo tackles. Had 3 sacks, 2 FFs and a FR. Beat the LT and chased down Brees for sack late in the 1st half. Great coverage on that play. Brees wanted to go downfield, instead he just went down. Made huge play late in the half. Lined up over C. At the snap, went hard to his left and attacked the outside shoulder of the RG. Got by him and hit Brees, knocking the ball loose. Brees might have been down, but due to shadows you couldn’t see the ball clearly and it was ruled a fumble. Eagles got it. Shed LT and just engulfed the RB at the line in the early 3rd. Saints tried to run PA pass in mid-3rd. Coverage was good and then Cox shed the LT and sacked Brees. Ball came loose. Cox saw it and was able to dive on the ball. Huge play in the game. On the next play to open the ensuing series, Cox stood up the LG, shed him, and grabbed the RB right at the LOS.

LOGAN – Great game. Had 3 TFLs and was regularly disruptive. Got a sack on opening drive. Lined up at NT and then looped around LDE. Came free and was able to get Brees jersey and drag him down. Shed the LG and stuffed Ingram for short loss on run in the late 2nd Qtr. Got upfield and then chased RB out wide in the early 3rd. Got him down for short TFL. Playing at a high level right now. Can win in 2-gap situations, but also athletic enough to make hustle plays and be disruptive. Was in on 5 total tackles.

THORNTON – A bit rusty. Saints ran right at him in mid-1st a couple of times and got solid gains. Wasn’t getting shoved around, but didn’t control his blocker like he normally does. Got better as the game went along. Had a hand in one tackle.

CURRY – Quiet game. I thought he would be more disruptive, but was only used for 22 plays. That’s low for game with so much passing. Didn’t make any big plays.

BAIR – DNP.

ALLEN – Only played 21 snaps, but solid showing. Played the run well. Got downblocked on 3rd/1 run in mid-3rd and that opened hole for RB. 2-gapped well when he was in there.

HART – Was on the field for 27 snaps. In on one tackle. Shed block and got RB by the feet on 3rd/1 run, but gave up 1.5 yds on the play. Didn’t get much pressure on Brees.

OLB

BARWIN – Quiet game. Had 2 tackles. Came free on a stunt and hit Brees in the mid-2nd, but the ball was already out. Was used creatively once again. Lined up at OLB, DE, DT and ILB. Helped to execute stunts. Knew Brees would throw quickly so tried to play the passing lanes at times. Just couldn’t get the timing right to deflect any passes. Didn’t make plays, but did his part to help the defense.

GRAHAM – Wasn’t credited with any tackles, but did get some pressure. Barely late to Brees in early 3rd. Ball was out fraction of a second before Graham got there. Came close on another pass play, again from the backside.

SMITH- Best game as an Eagle (insert your own joke here). Got on the field in the 2nd Qtr. Used good shoulder dip to get by LT and hit Brees on pass play. Came up big in 4th Qtr. Drove LT back and then hit Brees as he released pass. That was the play where Thurmond came up with the INT. Active. Chased play over to the other side of the field and tried to get in on the tackle. Joking aside, it was good to see him play and contribute.

BRAMAN – Got to play on defense late in the game. Had a sack of Drew Brees and got pressure a couple of other times. Natural pass rusher.

JONES – Didn’t stand out.

ILB

KENDRICKS – DNP

RYANS – Quiet game. Was only in on one tackle. Did make his presence felt. Knocked ball away from TE to open the 4th Qtr, but was correctly ruled to be incomplete pass. Made highlight play in the 4th Qtr. Saints were in the RZ. Brees hit TE with short pass. Ryans came up quickly and hit him hard, knocking the ball loose. Maxwell recovered.

ALONSO – DNP

HICKS – Continues to play outstanding football. Does a great job of covering ground, both E-W and N-S. Has speed. Starts and stops well. Trusts his eyes. When he sees it, he goes and gets it. Was in on 4 total tackles. Also had PD and FR. Active game. Saints tried to block him with WR on a run. Didn’t work. Hicks fought off the WR and stopped the RB for short gain. Recovered fumble late in the half when Cox hit Brees and knocked the ball loose. Had perfect coverage of RB on RZ play in early 3rd. Forced Brees to throw the ball away. Got excellent depth on 4th Qtr pass drop. Play was 3rd/9 and Hicks leapt up for the ball. Got his hands on it, but was high throw and couldn’t control it. That was more than 10 yards downfield.

Funny note…he and Ryans look a lot alike. They wear 58/59. I watch tape and go to write something positive about Ryans only to realize it is Hicks. Can’t believe this guy is a rookie. I’m blown away by how good he’s been.

GOODE – Got to play some on defense late n the game. Had 3 tackles in limited time. Flew to the ball and made strong tackles.

S

THURMOND – Another good showing. Looked like he might have been at fault on initial 3rd down. Had his eyes in the backfield and was slow to get wide, giving Brees open receiver in space. Involved in odd play in 1st Qtr. Was playing centerfield. Went over to streaking receiver and cut him off by acting like he was playing the ball. Ref threw flag, but later picked it up. Lined up over slot and was beaten by Cooks for 1st down in the Red Zone. Recovered well and almost broke up the pass, but just missed. Picked off pass in the late 4th. Read the play and jumped the route. Then returned it all the way back to the 3-yard line. Great eyes, hands. Had 4 solo tackles and was credited with 2 PDs (INT was one).

JENKINS – Very good game vs his former team. 6 total tackles, 2 TFLs. Opening play was quick pass to Spiller. Jenkins read it perfectly, got around the WR and put Spiller down for TFL. Saints tried to hit Spiller with swing pass on 3rd/22 late in the half. Jenkins was right there for another TFL. Beaten by Cooks for gain of 46 in the early 3rd. Never got jam on him and Cooks just outran MJ down/across the field. Did interesting thing in the late 3rd. Saints got CJ Spiller outside on pass play. Jenkins had to get through traffic to get out there. Hugged right up against Spiller and forced him to go out of bounds, making him an ineligible receiver. Drew Brees wanted a penalty. No call.

MARAGOS – Had tackle in 1st half. Helped Jenkins play bracket coverage on slot guy in the end zone. Forced Brees to throw the ball away and Saints had to settle for a FG.

COUPLIN – Didn’t play on defense.

CB

MAXWELL – Up and down game. Beaten by Snead for gain of 22 late in the 2nd Qtr. Snead was in the slot and Maxwell didn’t get a clean jam on him. That allowed Snead to get free and forced Max to chase. Almost got gift INT in early 3rd. Carroll knocked ball loose from receiver, who then bobbled it. Max was right there to snatch it, but couldn’t get his hands cleanly on the ball. Had pretty good coverage of Colston on 3rd/10, but Brees threw a perfect pass for gain of 17. Max made the tackle and drove Colston’s shoulder into the ground. That shoulder bothered him the rest of the game. Good PBU on short pass to Colston in the late 3rd. Quick break on the ball. Recovered fumble in mid-4th. I thought for a minute he would scoop the ball and be off to the races, but Max played it safe and fell on the ball. Had 2 solo stops.

CARROLL – Saints tried to go deep on him in the mid-1st, but Thurmond helped to break up that pass play. Carroll helped to break up a short pass in the early 3rd. Snead got behind him for gain of 59 in the early 4th. Was in on 5 tackles.

ROWE – Played late. Beaten for TD in final seconds. Did get in on 3 tackles.

BIGGERS – Slot guy. Gave up several completions, but always had okay coverage. Brees just put the ball right on the money on several throws. Had terrific coverage of Cooks in early 2nd on downfield throw. Was right in his hip pocket and running down the field. Able to reach up and knock the pass down. 3 solo tackles and a PD.

RICE – DNP

=============================================================

ST’s

JONES – Lazy. Only punted once all game. Why do the Eagles pay this guy if they aren’t going to use him? Punt did go for 50 yards.

STURGIS – 4 of 4 on FGs. 3 of 4 on XP’s. The one miss came on play where there was a high snap and that affected the hold. Had 5 touchbacks and 4 KOs returned.

– MISC –

KOR – Huff opened the game with a 40-yd KOR. Okay blocking, but really did it on his own. Found space and accelerated. Other 2 KOs were touchbacks.

PR – No returns. 1 fair catch. Others were downed or went out of bounds. Bad punting helped Eagles to have good field position.

* Great tackle by Maragos after Eagles first TD. Flew down the field and upended the KOR at the 13-yd line. Ball came loose, but wasn’t a fumble.

* Najee Goode made strong tackle on KO to open the 2nd half.

I really wish Murray would start running up the middle more where the O-linemen are opening up holes for him. Running to the sideline will give the occasional 20 yard rip, but more often than not, he’s forced out or hit for a loss. I know it’s easy to say from the recliner, but there are holes in the middle that he runs by. I’d much rather have 2nd and 7 than 2nd and 12!

It feels like everything negative we said about Shady last year is true about Murray this year. The decline in speed and inability to get to the right hole.

  5. 5 Buge Halls said at 1:53 PM on October 18th, 2015:

There’s no way we can know how much is play calling and how much is him trying for the big play every time (or trying to avoid the hit out bounds).

  6. 6 GEAGLE said at 2:22 PM on October 18th, 2015:

Considering how the OL has played for Murray this year, it’s understandable… The problem is people see how Murray played last week and think that’s what murray will look like each week, when in reality his issues are just an understandable lack of trust, that can be easily fixed… After Murray watched game tape and sees that his OL was blocking well for him, but his lack of trust kept him from maximizing the OL performance, we should see Murray have his breakout game Monday night..
    ..
This is an easily fixable problem, but building trust is part of the gelling process when you make so many changes… It’s such a correctable flaw that has held murray back, I’m sure it will get straightened out as this team Gels,
Last week was the first game where defenders werent crushing him in the backfield all game, so it was understandable, and it’s something that should be easily corrected and it won’t plague us for too much longer…

I give him credit for being a good teammate and not saying anything about how frustrating this must be.

  8. 8 GEAGLE said at 3:15 PM on October 18th, 2015:

Absolutely.. Especially when our dumb media makes it worse with all the stupid talk pinning Murray against Mathews,,. They are asking him questions about Ryan Mathews looking better than him, and he sits and eats it without throwing people under the bus… Media is a joke, by the end of the season we should be THRILLED to have Murray and Mathews..
    ..
You know the horrendoua blocking he got during the dallas game had to be hard on Murray… Appreciate him always being classy..

  9. 9 The original AG said at 5:01 PM on October 18th, 2015:

Having both is going to pay dividends later this season. CK is going to use both to wear down teams and keep piling on in the 4th quarter.

  10. 10 The original AG said at 4:59 PM on October 18th, 2015:

I thought he had some nice runs last week. He wasn’t perfect, but I felt he started to look better in the 4th quarter.

    And no shake and bake

  12. 12 GEAGLE said at 1:43 PM on October 18th, 2015:

That throw to ERTZ in the second quarter was gorgeous, THATS like Aaron Rogers type accuracy… Ertz was sorrounded by a couple defenders and SAM Couldnt lead ERtz because their was a WR to his outside, so he adjusted and made a Back shoulder throw in traffic that ERtz was able adjust on the fly and make the catch…. One of the nicest throws Bradford had made this year.
    ..
If SAM throws those two TDs instead of INTs, and the WRs DONT drop 3 catchable balls, SAM would be 37 of 45 with 4Tds which would have been an amazing performance …. You throw the ball 45 times and only have 8 incomplete passes would have been spectacular..
    ..
The Giants pass defense is a joke, Id like to see SAM build on these last two games and play his best game of the season on Monday night… It’s importat that the offense keeps building on each game and perform a little better than the previous game.
    ..
Tom is right in that, having playërs ready to play at the start of the game is bogus, NFL players shouldn’t need the coach to get them fired up to play… But a way that you can judge if a coach has his team ready to play is the penalties.. Last week we only had a handful of penalties which I praise the coaches for, as opposed to Rex Ryan’s bills who commit 18 penalties in a game and Rex tries to convince people that he is proud of his team after an 18 penalty game in a loss..
    ..
Rex Ryan, and Shady have ruined the bills for me as my AFC mistress… I also can’t stand Tyrod Taylor type of QBs…. I thought the changes would let me enjoy the bills even more, but I can root for Rex Ryan’s bad news bills…
    ..
think my new AFC mistress team this year is the Jets… I’d take a todd Bowles coached team over a Rex coached team any day… I enjoy the toughness Brandon Marshall plays the WR position with, his style of bullying DBs reminds of the modern day TO

A couple throws in big moments Make all the difference in the Nfl. I agreed that Bradford has the potential to put up sick stats, but the leagues history is littered with guys who don’t hit their ceiling. I’m hoping for the best and am pretty sure he’ll get better and have more consistency. But he’s not going to hit Rogers level. Rogers is just so amazingly consistent, always dynamic and never does does dumb stuff.

“It will be interesting to see if Murray will get better and bettet as the season goes along”….. Not sure why he wouldn’t? This is a very hard working, team first player, and what has held him back so far this season ISNT a Talemt or ability issue… It’s simply trust issues, comfort in the offense issues, easily understandable considering how bad we blocked for him before last weeks game and the fact that he only just played his 4th game as an eagle
    ..
We aren’t seeing Limitatiòns that will doom Murray to play at this level all year, what has held him back is pretty much all attributed to the gelling process, which is why I don’t get carried away with Ryan Performing better than him so far…
    ..
My expectation is Monday night will be Murrays breakout game, where he looks significantly better than he did last week when he put up some decent numbers, but if for some reason it doesn’t click for Murray Monday, im sure it will happen for him at some point in the not so distant future,,, Murray missed the Jets game, so he really just got his first 4 games under his belt, and the OL seems like it’s coming together for him, so I’m expecting to see Murray perform like our best offensive player on Monday night running over the over rated #2 ranked run defense,.,
    ,,
Funny to see the Giants run defense get all this hype because teams are just choosing to throw against their league worst pass defense with No pass rushers,.. In reality the Eagles Run defense is on another level than the Giants…
    .,
Monday night will prove that our run defense is elite, and their is a fraud

Golden Tate caught a ball in the end zone, Kyle Fuller kinda got his hands on the ball or swatted at it and the ball came loose into the air where a bears LB caught it. Blandino said the receiver wasn’t going to the ground and made 3 steps before the ball coming loose. He did end up going to the ground so Dean is wrong there, and while he did probably make 3 steps, they were choppy and he didn’t have the ball long enough IMO. I’ve seen guys catch a ball and make 3 steps and get the ball knocked out and it’s ruled incomplete…..NFL network had Blandino on and i think he knows the refs screwed up, but just didn’t want to admit it

  31. 31 FairOaks said at 4:56 PM on October 18th, 2015:

I thought that was a TD. He had two feet down and to me made a football move (started twisting upfield to get more yardage), so it should have been possession at that point, and he was in the end zone. The ball wasn’t knocked out until the third foot was coming down.

I didn’t take a closer look at how Celek played but cElek has always been a strong blocker and Barwin has been watching him block for 3 years, so to hear Barwin so impressed must mean Celek was pretty damn impressive as a blocker against the Saints..
    .
I’m sure ERtz still has more growing to do as a blocker, but I saw him have some really effective moments as a blocker against the Saints.. I’d like to see the Eagles use ERtz more as a blocker, and use Celek more in the passing game so that how we use them ISNT predictable… Ertz can work on his blocking all he wants, but the only way to really grow him as a blocker is to ask him to block in games.. So for the sake of his developmemt I hope we continue to ask him to make some important blocks in our run game… With Celek having such a stellar reputation as a blocker, you wouldn’t think that he can get open all day if we keep him in to block for a few seconds and than łet him release and go out for a catch, should be able to be a tough weapon to stop in situations like 3rd and 4

We tend to split with Dallas, they win at the Linc, we play great in Jerry World
    .,
Yet the crappiest team in the division, Skin, seem to be a thorn in our side and play us tôugh. We destroy the Rg3 skins, but we have yet to beat Kurt Cousins… And what’s worrisome is that we have to play the skins again late in the year with the season probably being on the line,… We have to find a way to turn it around against the skins and get a home win against them in December… One thing in our favor is I don’t think the skins ever beat chip kelly Eagles at the Linc, and we will need to do it again the second to last game of the season,…

    ,,
The young knucklehead has frustrated me, but at no point Have I ever been down on his physical ability and talent as a player…we just need to get the mental part of his game to catch up with his physical ability
    ..
Feel like Huff has been the WR version of Chris Polk with hisdevelopment being stunted by getting hurt and banged up at inopportune times…. Hopefully he is done with injuries for this season, so he can get the continuity he needs to really grow and get comfortable against NFl defenses..
    ..
We don’t even NEED huff to be a star this year, but if we can just get 5 catches per game from Huff and Agholar, this offense would really take off

But we will probably always see Miles get a few snaps a game because it seems like chip wamts to use different waves of weapons to Attack defenses…
    ..
The Giants are starting a 5’10 178lb corner on the outside… I NEED to see Huff rough this kid up and go at him all day. Huff should be too physical for a corner THATS under 180lbs, Chip needs to let huff go after the kid… And every single time we run the ball, Huff Needs to really smash that kid and wear him down with his physicality all game, pass plays and run plays,..
    ..
Give Huff like 5 WR screens and forced that kid to make a tackle
    ..
Hopefully after the bye week we see both Huff and Agholar get comfortable and combine for 10 catches per game each week during the last 8 games of the season

But they all also said he was very very raw as a route runner, had too many drops, and didn’t put much effort into blocking. He had the physical skills to be good/great at everything a WR needed to do, but needed to grow a lot. One compared him with Stephen Hill. So a boom/bust type of pick, and he has boomed (unlike Hill).

    ..
But Martevis isn’t the only round 3 WR Huff is competing with, Cardinals John Brown so far is probably even ahead of Martevis BRyant in terms of NFL contribution since drafted…. 3 years from now, I hope Huff is a better pro WR than bruce Arians Tiny WR

hopefully Matt Cassel doesn’t come in and give them a spark. THEY NEED TO KEEP LOSING! They said that they are making this QB change because he is more aggressive than Weedman, but I’m hoping to see Cassel throw INTs at an alarming rate..heard some rumors about Dallas not being happy with Randle and McFadden and hoping Christine Micheal can step up and take their jobs which Dallas will never admit since it’s was their excuse for letting Murray walk..
    ..
I do know that Jason Garrett was furious that John Randle risks fumbles by trying to stretch his arms to try and cross the ENDZONE plain to get a TD, and got yelled at for it and then Randle did it again in another game which was why they sat him the rest of the game, Tho they wouldn’t admit that he was benched..

Hopefully in the next Cowboys game, Cassell plays terrible, throws 3 bad INTs, and Christine Micheal fumbles and looks bad leading to a Loss… The Cowboys are trying to go with a new QB and a new RB and the last thing we want is to see them two successfully give the Cowboys a spark and snap their losing streak… We want this QB/RB change to look even worse than they players they are replacing leading them to another loss, which would completely demoralize them and they wouldn’t have any other drastic changes to make lookimh for a spark…

    From Yahoo on Hopkins:

“After delivering yet another massive fantasy line on Sunday (10-148-2), Hopkins is now on pace to finish his season with 139 catches for 1,936 yards. He’s topped 100 yards in four of his six games, plus he reached 98 in another. Hopkins has been unfair, basically. He’s dragging Brian Hoyer to fantasy relevance, which is no minor achievement. Hopkins’ 148-yard effort this week was somehow only his third-best total of the year. That’s absurd.

In case you were wondering, the NFL single-season record for receptions is 143 (Marvin Harrison, 2002) and the all-time yardage mark is 1,964 (Megatron, 2012). Those records are pretty clearly at risk. Hopkins has seen 89 targets over six weeks, which means he’s on pace for an unfathomable 237. Last year, Demaryius Thomas led the league with 184. No defensive tactic has been particularly effective against Hopkins to this point (obviously)”

The NYG rush defense, at 2nd in DVOA, appears to be legit.

The NYG passing offense is ranked 6th, their rush O is 20th. Conversely, our O is equally weak in passing and rushing, 17th and 18th–but at least going the right direction.

Lots of people seem to be picking the Eagles over a team that has performed better thus far this season.

  156. 156 The original AG said at 9:08 PM on October 18th, 2015:

This is interesting. The Saints may be a bad team, but the Eagles did hand them their worst loss of the season, and dominated them far more than any of the other teams.

I think the Eagles have momentum, but only because the OLine is playing far better. If they can build on last Sunday, we should be fine. If they struggle, we are in for a long rest of the season.

Truthfully, I’m not worried about the Giants defense as I am their offense. I could easily see this being a high score game on both sides. I’m not sold on the Giants run defense just yet. Most teams (sans Bills) are scoring at least 20 points a game on this defense. I think their run defense looks better because teams just go for the weaker part, their secondary.

Bears, 49ers, Skins (loss hurts even more), Bucs, Saints all suck.

Lions put themselves too far behind the 8-ball to catch up especially since they have to play the Packers twice yet. They won’t win more than 8 games even if everything goes right for them down the stretch.

I hate widdling down the WC race this year in the season but in the NFC it is the Vikings, Seahawks, Rams, and then the NFC East teams sans the division winner. Still wouldn’t right off the Boys yet especially since I do think Cassel can be a bit more serviceable than Weeden.

Maybe one of those teams turns it on to win 10 or 11 games but I kind of doubt it.

And the QB/center combo was Colt Anderson and Griff Whalen the KR. Some other players were just mingling behind the wall of players set out to the right sideline…..It was all to just try and get the Pats to jump, but with one second left on the play clock the center snapped it with two Pats lined up right over his head, ball carrier was tackled easily

Basically I think they were hoping for a QB and Center vs just one Patriot defender, but when the pats kept two defenders over the center they were supposed to scratch the play and take the delay of game…… I don’t know if this is correct but I cant fathom what else they were trying to accomplish with that bush league formation

  195. 195 RobNE said at 8:27 AM on October 19th, 2015:

Right I think it was meant to confuse the Pats and maybe the Pats waste a TO or jump off sides. Whenever someone tries to outsmart Belicheck it normally doesn’t work well. aaron Rogers is starting to become more and more like the modern day Peyton Manning, in that he won a Super Bowl and then spends the rest of his career dominating in the regular season as the top QB in the game, and end up chocking and finding a yeat to always lose in the playoffs..

I’d rather play GB in January at Lambeau when they are at their best. Then to go to seattle and play the seahawks when they are at their prime as a team..

Aaron Rogers and GB better stop chocking in January…. Crazy that mIke McCarthy is Never on the hot seat as if he is the only coach that can win games with the best Regular season QB in the game… If GB keeps losing in the playoffs, at what point does McCarthy get held accountable?

Rodgers has been injured late in the season the last couple of years, which has affected his performance in the playoffs. If that happens again, sure, it would make a difference. Even so last year though, they should have beaten Seattle. An accurate QB like Brees still got a bunch of chunk plays against the Eagles, even with the rest of the team being awful, so count me as being rather wary of Green Bay. Eagles need to improve a lot between now and then to have a chance I think, but that is indeed possible.

I’m wary of 31 other QBs every week, as we all should be. Personally, I’d like the road through the NFC to go through Philly – but not sure that’s gonna happen this year…

Yeah we Probably aren’t finishing with one of the top 2 records in the NFC

Unfortunately, this is the consequence of a slow start. Shoot for the #3 seed, but they have to beat Carolina and AZ to do that.

  208. 208 GEAGLE said at 1:47 PM on October 19th, 2015:

I think we put a beating on Carolina, i love how we match up against them… The fact THAT our DL is so Discaplined in its pass rush, rushiñg QBs as a cohesive unit, which cuts off Escape roots for a QB is a nightmare for Cam… Just like they kept him in the pocket last year and than strangled him, we will beat that undefeated Panthers team..
    ..
I think the Cardinals are a tougher matchuo for us…. I expect to walk right thru Carolina’s undefeated record

If we can get these next two games, we should be in pretty good shape to kill it the rest of the year.

ya I agree, lets see this Eagles team show some consistency first before I even care about that stuff since its so far off. A win vs a bad saints team hasnt done it for me yet, not even sure a win against this beat up Giants team will either. I just want to see better play on the offense, then Ill start letting myself get into playoff talk.

I need to see Rodgers win another Super Bowl to believe it…. Can’t make excuses 5 years in a row

he had a bunch yesterday, he’s also made a ton of plays for Manning when he just throws the ball up for grabs. Demaryius is the Broncos offense

  217. 217 GEAGLE said at 1:36 PM on October 19th, 2015:

Kurt Cousins has 4 more career INTs than Rg3 has, while Cousins attempted 430 less passes than RG3 attempted….
    ..
yet Gruden makes every excuse imaginable for Cousins,…
    ..
Wonder how many more games Cousins lasts before they put Colt McCoy in LOL
    ..
It’s amazing how a franchise can have 3 QB’s who are all so bad
